Did anyone else love the Lizzie Bennet Diaries as much as I did? Do you want to listen to me gab about it for three hours? The Lizzie Bennet Diaries were an immersive transmedia experience based on Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice, and it is, entirely as a result of writers and performers who were horrendously underpaid and undervalued, an absolutely phenomenal piece of art and adaptation. In this video I recap the series and some of my favorite adaptational moments and compare them to the 1995, and 2005 film versions as well as to Bridget Jones' Diary, but I remain completely loyal to my favorite, this youtube adaptation I loved when I was a teenager that introduced me to the story in the first place.

What Do We Owe Afghanistan? by Nathan J. Robinson and Noam Chomsky (↳ on the war in Afghanistan and the evils of the US military; cws for everything you'd expect)
What is a Woman? (A Response) by Julia Serano (↳ on the TERF's favorite question)

Y’all I need some motivation help please?
So. Context. A little while ago I came across some cursed knowledge: there are more at least a dozen Pride and Prejudice musicals in existence. At least 12 times throughout history, someone has attempted to turn Jane Austen’s classic social problems romantic comedy into a full-length work of musical theater.
Since then I’ve been on an obsessive quest to find, watch, and review them all. The idea is to turn all of my thoughts into a long video essay, so everyone has a comprehensive gateway into the Pride and Prejudice Musical Theater Extended Universe.
The problem is, video essays are hard to make. They take a lot of time and energy. And at this point I’ve hit an impasse. So to motivate myself, I want to gauge the interest of the tumblr community. So…
Thank you all!

I've actually been going thru twilight in full recently (don't worry, it's a bootlegged yt copy, and in the framing device of vtuber watchalong because I could not handle it un-riffed) and it coming on the heels of
(1) contrapoints' video essay discussing (among many, many, many other things) all the repressed religious mormon psychosexuality that smeyer accidentally injected into it and;
(2) [Redacted for their privacy]'s meticulous liveblog of a long, shockingly bad (both in writing and hamfisted handling of serious subject matter) popular drifteris fic that makes twilight look like goddamn pride and prejudice;
is the weirdest fucking experience ever because I'm neo-in-the-matrix-seeing-through every single piece of racist, misogynist, mormon subtext in which vampirism stands in for and is entwined with marriage, sex and childbirth; and yet I've experienced the dread horror of someone's colleen hooveresque, wattpad-to-booktook YA pipeline magnum opus drifteris fic featuring sex slavery, coquette kink and about 10 million conflicting jealousy and misunderstanding subplots and so I can't honestly say twilight is the WORST romance I've witnessed.

Bagginshield Week 2023 - Guideline, Dates, Prompts
Tumblr media
Welcome all to Bagginshield Week 2023, an event meant to inspire creations surrounding the relationship between Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakeshield! Keep reading below the cut to find out how to participate, when will it take place, and what are the prompts!
What is considered as Bagginshield for the purposes of the event? Any kind of relationship between Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield, whether that be platonic, romantic or sexual, so long as said relationship or the interactions between these characters are the main focus of the work you create.
Is there one specific incarnation of the characters/story that we must abide by? Not at all, you can write them following the lines of the book, the animated film, or the live action trilogy, and even add your own flavor to them. As for the story, you may observe either canon, or make it as canon divergent or alternate universe as you wish (prompt notwithstanding).
Are other pairings featuring Bilbo or Thorin welcome? Yes. So long as Bilbo and Thorin remain the focus of the work, you may include any other background pairings, other relationships (of any nature) that feature Bilbo or Thorin, and polycules/open relationships. I find it perfectly understandable and more than acceptable if you wish, for example, to develop a platonic relationship between these two characters, while also hinting at either of them having a romantic relationship with someone else. Different strokes for different folks.
What mediums are allowed? Are there any minimum requisites for completion or participation? Officially speaking, all mediums are allowed and there aren’t any requisites , since the purpose is to simply inspire more creations of this pair, but the following minimums are encouraged -
Art: 1 sketch.
Fiction: 250 words.
Commentary: 250 words.
Podfic: 5 minutes.
Edits/manips: 2 pictures.
Gifset: 2 gifs.
Moodboard: 4 pictures.
Playlist: 5 songs.
Any other mediums you can think of are more than welcome! If what you wish to create in (animation, cosplay, embroidery, essay, poetry, video edit, you name it) isn’t mentioned above, is simply because I couldn’t even begin to conceptualize what could be considered a minimum for it or wasn’t entirely sure if what I had in mind would work out. You’re more than welcome to drop any comments on other mediums in the ask box, and to participate just as freely as anyone else! Again, these minimums are suggestions, after all!
Event Specifics
Date: June 4th - 10th. 2023.
Two extra days (June 11th and 12th) will be available to post/finish creations.
There are two prompts to chose from or combine per day.
There are two alternate prompt sets (regular and whump), with five prompts each, which you can exchange or combine with any daily prompt.
For those posting in Tumblr, you must use the tag #thilboweek23 to have your post reblogged. For those posting in AO3, a Collection will be set at the beginning of the event. For those who may post somewhere else or would prefer remaining anonymous on Tumblr, you may: make a short Tumblr post to promote, request me to share your work through the Discord server (that is still being set up) or an ask through Tumblr, or send me an email with the link to your work through an account I will share later (I’m afraid I don’t have Twitter or Instagram accounts, sorry).
Prompts
June 4th: Fairytale AU | Domestic June 5th: Bilbo in Erebor | Piercings & Tattoos June 6th: Pride & Prejudice AU | Blade/Sword June 7th: Nautical/Pirate AU | The Moon/The Sun June 8th: Ghibli AU | Hobbit Culture June 9th: Erebor Never Fell | Flowers/Flower Language June 10th: Everybody Lives/Nobody Dies | Haunted House/Castle/Palace
Regular Alternate Prompts: Courtship | Secret Relationship | Thorin is an Errant Smith | Meeting the Family | Enchantments/Spells
Whump Alternate Prompts: Believed to be Dead | Nightmares/Hallucinations | Silence | Left Behind | Hidden Injury

Trying to explain historical costuming in shows: "Look, you can start with these seven Bernadette Banner videos, move on to Not Your Momma's History, a dash of Abby Cox, add in these five thousand word tumblr essays- wait where are you going?? We haven't even started on the men's fashion!! You need to know how buttonholes are made to understand how this costume is from two decades earlier than they claim! Come back here!! THIS IS HOW WE HAVE FUN"
😂 The thing is that I'm NOT impossible to please! I'm really not! There are films that I can tell really tried to capture the aesthetic of a period and they get my sincerely gushing praise forever! And I'm even much more willing to let things SLIDE if they mostly really TRIED! Like, the 1995 Pride and Prejudice? Way too many low-necked dresses for day wear honestly, but they did SUCH a great job with the general aesthetic including the HAIR, that you know what? I don't care, I ADORE YOU! The 1994 Little Women? There are some weird collars and literally none of the men wear hats for some reason?! But, once again, they NAILED the general aesthetic and oh my gosh is that an actual spoon bonnet you included?!!! I am KISSING YOU ON THE MOUTH! Emma 2020? Some of the hair choices are a little weird (the ramen noodle curls, haha) and some of Mr. Knightley's trousers have a modern fly front, but NEVER MIND THAT! You are my almost PERFECT ANGEL and I will be TELLING EVERYONE how much I love you!!! 🥺🥰. 2011 Jane Eyre? I am VIBRATING WITH EXCITEMENT!!! I have a mental list of movies that I think are truly fantastic from a historical costuming perspective (it's not even necessarily always about Total Accuracy! It's about VIBES, it's about did they understand the Cultural Zeitgeist!) and they have my loyalty and adoration forever!
(Also, this is where I have to mention that I have had the wonderful privilege of meeting Cheyney McKnight of Not Your Momma's History in person, and not only was she super lovely, but she actually literally saved my youngest child's life. 😆 I am completely dead serious, and it's a great story so you should ask me about that sometime, haha!)

What do you listen to/watch when crafting? I'm making a quilt and looking for documentaries of podcasts to put on in the background and would love recommendations if you have any!
Good question! I watch and listen to a lot of stuff, I'm not going to lie, I'll try to keep this list reasonably short because I need to go to bed but I hope I can help!
Watch: so when the thing I'm doing is simple/I don't have to look, I like to put on a show. I have a friend who can crochet while also watching a show with subtitles at the same time but I do not possess this power so I generally put on English shows or movies, I try to avoid shows that use a lot of visual humour since I miss a lot looking down at my work
- Avatar: The Last Airbender is so so so good I'm so glad my friend bullied me into watching it
- Studio Ghibli movies (though it can be really hard focusing on my craft when watching these because the art is just so beautiful I can't stop looking)
- Police Procedurals (yes, they're copaganda but I literally grew up watching them so they're kind of comforting?) So think Bones, Castle, Criminal Minds, CSI ect.
- Youtube video essays: I love watching videos that talk about fashion, how it's made, fast fashion and it's consequences as well as the general enshittification of clothes as well as videos on different techniques like nalbinding, knitting shetland lace, darning, spinning ect.
Listen:
- Concept albums! I love concept albums, listening to them from start to finish, some of my favourites are Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge and I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love by My Chemical Romance, American Idiot by Green Day
- Actually any album really is great when you're doing particularly difficult work, just put one on and listen to it start to finish
- Audiobooks! I borrow audiobooks from my local library through a BorrowBox account but you can also find heaps of audiobooks on youtube! My favourite audiobooks so far have been The Martian by Andy Weir, The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins and The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells but there are also So Many classics on Youtube like Pride and Prejudice, The Bell Jar, 1984 and others
- Podfics! If you like fanfiction, depending on the fandom, you can sometimes find audio versions of your favourite fan fics. I listen to a lot of My Hero Academia podfics since the fandom is so popular there's a lot of choices available but I know that some other fandoms I read don't have as many podfics available.
- Podcasts! I don't listen to a lot of podcasts but I do still have some recommendations. I've listened to a little of The Magnus Archives, Tales From The Arcanist and You're Wrong About
Alright that ended up a little longer than I anticipated but I hope that helps! I'm going to bed now

In France movies come out on Wednesdays (and not Fridays like the US), so I did Barbenheimer today!
Thoughts on both, spoilerless for Oppenheimer, slight spoiler for Barbie (not story relevant, but a fun little detail I had to incluide)
Oppenheimer:
10/10 movie
The score was magnificent
A-list cast, the acting was incredible
Didn't feel like a classic biopic, which is good bc we have too many of those in Hollywood
Physics rep! Also I hyperfixated over the atomic bomb for a while back then, this was thirst-quenching
Christopher Nolan is always a win
The pacing felt a bit weird sometimes tho
Cillian Murphy has tiny nipples
Barbie:
THIS MOVIE CHANGED MY BRAIN CHEMISTRY
IM GOING FERAL RN
EVERYTHING IS PERFECT
THE LITTLE DETAILS
THE REFERENCES
THE EXISTENTIALISM AND ABSURDISM OF IT ALL
IT PERFECTLY CAPTURED WHAT BEING A WOMAN IS LIKE IN A PATRIARCHY AND HOW QUICKLY THE THINGS WE TAKE FOR HRANTED FALL APART
I NEED TO WATCH 25 MILLION VIDEO ESSAYS ABOUT THIS MOVIE
I FELT PERSONALLY VIOLATED BY DEPRESSION BARBIE AND THE BBC PRIDE AND PREJUDICE LINE
COCK RING KEN IS IN IT
AFALSGALWGSVSKWPYWFWMWLW
What a good day for cinema my friends

Ooooo JatP everyone works in a high school AU, headcanons?
-Luke and Julie as the music teachers. They teach different, so Julie has the tiny nervous freshmen, Luke gets the second and third years, and Julie takes the seniors.
-If you think you're taking music because it's an Easy Class, you are mistaken, and if you're not super into music because of Miss Molina's enthusiasm, Mr Patterson is gonna be so intense you either get with the program or rush to the Principal after two weeks like: can I please switch to like, pottery or something?
-Reggie as the math teacher who tries to make math easy and fun to understand. He may or may not have built a giant adjustable ramp with Willie to have a whole 'My Cousin Throckmorton' math problem day.
-English teacher Willie. He is delighted by students who turn in essays like 'Hamlet was a little bitch and here's why'. As long as your spelling and grammar is fine and your arguments are sound, he is here for it. Runs the GSA with Flynn. Unofficially voted 'most likely to give people a sexuality crisis'.
-History teacher Alex, who everyone may think is boring but if you're actually listening in class he has all these dry, snarky asides. He also teacher the stuff that's not in the books, and does a whole 'this is how you spot propaganda, and this is how you fight it, whoops how did that video of my friend Bobby punching a nazi get in there, lol anyway'.
-Listen, you know that one time after like, his and Willie's anniversary party or something, he came into his morning senior class, set up the screen, turned on the Puppet History playlist, and just thunked his head on the desk like 'I am so hungover oh god why did I let Luke talk me into those shots'.
-Everyone knows Mr Mercer and Mr Willie ('hey you think it's weird we don't even know the English Teacher's last name?') have a crush on each other. Mr Mercer always gets so flustered when Mr Willie talks to him in the hall or flirts with him at assembly.
-It takes a while to realise that no, it's not a crush, those two are MARRIED and Mr Willie is also Mr Mercer but they thought that would be confusing.
-Flynn teaches media studies. She and Willie do Crossover Weeks where they do like, Pride and Prejudice and stuff. She also DJs every single school dance and helps run the yearbook and the GSA and is generally the Cool Teacher you go to when you have a crazy idea for a club or event.
-Guidance counselor Carrie is terrifying. She's also terrifyingly efficient. If you tell her what your goals are for college, she will have all the scholarships you can apply for ready for you within the week and she will stop at nothing until you achieve your dreams, supportive parents of nah.
If you tell her you have a problem at home, she will get you help so fast, no matter who your parents are. She also strikes fear into bullies everywhere, and is not above using her own former-mean-girl tactics to get into their head and help them realise they need to stop being a shit or she will Destroy Them.
-Principal Victoria is super good at dealing with demanding, entitled parents, but if she's particularly annoyed at one, she 100% sends them to Carrie and sits back and enjoys the carnage.
-Victoria has a list of specific pairings of teachers who are no longer allowed to chaperone the dances together due to Chaos or getting lost in each other's eyes and not realising there is INAPPROPRIATE GRINDING GOING ON. (Luke and Reggie, Willie and Alex)

New Title Tuesday: Nonfiction Recommendations
Book of Earth by Heidi Gustafson
Part anthropological study, part art book, and part how-to, Book of Earth is an immersive introduction into the world of ochre, a naturally occurring mineral used to make pigment. Each chapter delves into Heidi Gustafson’s rare pigment archive and provides a thorough exploration of natural color, while challenging our notions of the inanimate world. Featuring practical advice and techniques for creating your own pigments and applying these skills in everyday life, Gustafson also includes contributor essays offering historical and cultural perspectives on color cultivation and the meaning of pigments to various cultures.
Devil's Coin by Jennifer McAdam
The OneCoin global cryptocurrency fraud stole tens of billions of dollars from ordinary people around the world. Unlike Madoff or Enron, who relieved the world’s wealthiest investors of their cash, the exploiting genius of the OneCoin scam was targeting the poorest people in the world, the “unbanked” - those who struggled to live or get mainstream banking support. The arrogant assumption was that the downtrodden wouldn't have the means or will to fight back. They didn’t reckon on Jen McAdam - a teenage mother, young grandmother, and modern-day Erin Brockovich. Jen’s father left her £15,000 when he died: his savings from living a careful life in a small Scottish mining town. Jen wanted a safe investment for this money to fund a better life for her family. She was digitally savvy, and she had heard of people making fortunes with Bitcoin.
When she saw the promotional material for OneCoin - the founder Dr. Ruja Ignatova featured in major reputable media outlets; videos of celebrity events; gushing video testimonials of people, just like Jen, who had changed their lives - she was entranced. Only months later, she realized she would never see her money again. Jen was one of the only victims worldwide to fight back. Despite terrifying attempts to shut down both her and her growing support groups, she fought tirelessly for justice for herself, her family and friends, and the millions around the world who lost everything, in some cases even their lives. This is a true David-and-Goliath story to give us all a message of hope about the power we as individuals can have, even when things seem hopeless.
Queer Footprints by Dan Glass
This ground-breaking guide will take you through the city streets to uncover the scandalous, hilarious, and empowering events of London’s queerstory. Follow in the footsteps of veteran activists, such as those who marched in London’s first Pride parade in 1972 or witnessed the 1999 bombing of the Admiral Duncan pub in Soho.
Accompanied by a chorus of voices of both iconic and unsung legends of the movement, readers can walk through parts of East, West, South, and North London, dipping into beautifully illustrated maps and extraordinary tales of LGBTQIA+ solidarity, protest, and pride. From the Brixton Faeries to Notting Hill Carnival to world-changing protests in Trafalgar Square, Rebel Dykes to drag queen communes, Queer Footprints celebrates the hidden histories of struggle and joy. Includes an accessibility guide and a list of queer spaces, clubs, networks, and resources.
Saving Snakes by Nicolette L. Cagle
Beautiful to behold and extremely sensitive to its environment, the snake is nonetheless stigmatized as a serpent, a creature that almost universally inspires fear. At a time when so many animals are endangered, who will speak up for the snake? Snake populations are declining precipitously around the globe, but calls for their conservation are muted by fear and prejudice.
Saving Snakes offers a new approach to understanding snakes and preserving their populations - an approach built on respect. Nicolette Cagle has traveled the world in search of snakes, from the Midwest and the southeastern United States to Cuba, Nicaragua, and Australia, and spent decades conducting natural science research on the patterns of snakes in regions where urban development encroaches upon the natural world. Her book offers a firsthand account of the strange and secretive lives of snakes, and reveals their devastating losses. Beautifully and accessibly written, Saving Snakes entwines Cagle’s personal narrative with deep scientific and historical research.

The last time I tried to give a video essay a chance which was rather recently I fucking snapped when the essayist had the gall to ground his criticism in 'and why does everything happen to the protagonists?' the fucking state of narrative criticism, good grief.

My #1 post of 2022
I was just musing on how Reylo was argued against for years: 'it's gross,' or 'it's problematic,' or 'he killed Han', or 'it's incest' (that was the funniest one). Reylo is a good comparison of a ship because alike to Knightfall it's a mythic romance, it has a lot of similar motivating themes along with monomythic storytelling. It was also canon.
The issue with Reylo is that not once have I ever seen Reylo argued against on the grounds of monomythic interpretation or anything decently textually and thematically relevant. Because it was essentially impenetrable.
You couldn't argue with it on the terms of the text or the Original Trilogy because the Original Trilogy had a central redemption predicated on love, and in the context of a young man who is the evidence of Vader once being flesh-and-blood, a familial relationship was natural; between Rey and Kylo, who were both young and shared similar wounds, romance was the natural answer (particularly for picking up where Padme/Anakin left off).
The narrative reasoning that motivated Reylo is Star Wars. It's inseparable. It's mythic. It was the only planned canon detail of the Sequel Trilogy. It's evident in the concept art. They sought out Adam Driver to play Kylo and had a particular Romantic vision of Kylo. Eddie Redmayne auditioned for Kylo with the Pride & Prejudice script:
With films that top secret, they don’t give you the actual lines. So they give you a scene from Pride and Prejudice, but then they tell you you’re auditioning for the baddie. If you’re me, you then put some ridiculous voice on.
Pride & Prejudice is one of the most notable romance novels ever written and presumably this is referencing the 2005 film adaptation.
The Reylo dynamic was planned to be romantic.
The point I'm trying to make here is that you can't argue on these textual grounds and that's why you weaponise personal taste or anti bullshit. It's part of why it became so militant (and it was wrong place wrong time as a part of a broader shift of fandom) and to this day I still encounter people who try to explain to me that it's regressive for a female character to 'fix' a male character completely misunderstanding the thematic point of it or relationship of the characters that was reciprocal and grounded in the ethos of SW. They just keep repeating it because it's all they know and it makes them feel special and contrarian.
Sort of the point I'm trying to get at (as I have made a few posts about this already) is that the grounds on which someone is arguing something matters just as much as what the substantial content is. Reylo's refutation was personal taste. That was it. Because there was no other refutation.
Food for thought.

day 1/100
14.11.2022 || Hello again, it's been a while. Things have gotten a little out of hand in the last few weeks so I've decided to start another 100 days of productivity challenge because stuff is happening in my life and I neeeeeeed to focus.
I was doing pretty well until I decided to take a break from studying for a couple of days to finish knitting my hat, which turned into two weeks (such a stupid idea) (at least it's a very nice hat). Then I got a cold (not covid) and wasn't able to attend lectures for a week. So I'm VERY behind on almost everything.
Right now I'm about to take a Germanic Philology exam. Considering how I prepared for it, I'm either going to ace or epically bomb, no in between. If I don't pass, I will be able to retake it in January. So it's important that I pass but otherwise, there is always January.
And that's today. After I'm done with the exam, I will spend the rest of the week editing a video for my sis' birthday. It's her present and, dog, it's going to take a bunch of time to finish it but I will.
Once that's done, I will need to start prepping for the German exam I'll take Jan/Feb/still unclear (I have a bunch of exercise sheets to do + write an essay about I don't even know what).
Once I'm done with that, it will be time to prepare for all my other exams, which for this semester are going to be: Germanic Philology (the oral part), Italian Literature, German 2, and then...
????
Ah, right, Modern History. I forgot the name of the course I'm supposed to be attending, that's peachy.
I need to buy the manuals for Italian Lit and Modern History and ask a friend to pass me her notes for Italian Lit.
Then I'll take my exams and hopefully pass all 4 of them. Then I'll need to start working on my dissertation.
Yes, I asked a professor if she would please be my supervisor (it was SO nerve-wracking) and she agreed! We won't start working on it together until May but I want to start researching on my own before that. The subject is going to be... Drum roll, please... Pride and Prejudice fanfictions. Which is bonkers, I didn't expect any professor would take me seriously but she actually agreed!
During the second semester, I will also need to write another essay for German 3 and I think another one for Portuguese? From what I've heard about the professor? There is no point in worrying about it until after my exams are finished so let's put a lid on that.
And in March I'm supposed to look for an internship.
Oh and in the middle of all this, I'm supposed to enrol in driving school and write various short stories and knit 2 frogs before Christmas and practice German and Portuguese every day.
BUT. KEEP CALM AND DRINK TEA. Most of this stuff is very far away in the future. Let's focus on today's exam and editing that birthday video.
Well, thanks for reading, I'll see you tomorrow, I guess.
