Just got a 100+ words essay on how Darklina is not a healthy pairing on a fic from 2021. How did you get there in the first place?? Plus the fic wasn't even too shippy. There wasn't much romance there in the first place.
Anti Darklinas: "THIS SHIP IS TOXIC!!"
Darklina fans:
Tumblr media
Why are they always acting as if we are the stupid ones while they're the ones who just don't get it??😭🤦
We KNOW it's toxic!
But so is M*laria, M*lina or how else you call it🙂
Also, toxic antis really are dogshit. 'Cause they're everywhere. They have even invaded Pinterest (I CANNOT ENJOY SOME GOOD DARKLINA FANART WITHOUT AN ANTI QUOTING BELOW "Darklina 🤮". LIKE SHUT UP!!) They roam everywhere preaching the word of their Lords, Mal and Baghra, about how the Darkling is toxic and he destroyed everything Alina held dear and blah, blah.
(In times like these, I really wish I was here before that shit show came out. Where Alarkling ruled without shame 🥲)
And about that essay you got, dear anon. Just destroy the hell out of it. Ignore it. We all do it. They're not worth your energy and attention.

what my 65yo father has to say about antis:
let me preface this by saying, i literally wish i had what just happened on video to go viral on TikTok. i was shook by this conversation down to my bones; and if you could see my father - a loud old Italian man with dramatic hand gestures - say what he had to say, i think this shit would blow up. but as i was obviously not filming him while we were eating, i will have to relay to you the story with my words.
so i'm sitting eating dinner at the coffee table with my father while watching TV, as Americans often do instead of eating at the dinner table, and since the news was on he started telling me this story that had been recently mentioned on TV once again from maybe ten years ago (it was in 2014, you can read about it here) where these two 12-year-old girls killed one of their friends as a sacrifice to the Slender Man. yeah, real thing. fucked up.
and so my father told me about how they interviewed one of the killer's mothers, and when questioned about where her daughter's motive could've come from, she said something along the lines of: you know, when i was a kid, i was into Stephen King and horror - and so when my kid was into that kind of stuff, i didn’t think it was a big deal.
so, of course, my response was "yeah, being into that stuff isn’t a big deal at all - it's normal - but being a sociopath and murdering someone is not normal; it's fucked up. but there's nothing wrong with being into horror stories - they're just stories meant to entertain - it doesn't make you a murderer to enjoy Halloween - but it would if you put on a Michael Myers mask and went out and stabbed people." and, of course, like any sane person, my father agreed with me.
then, continuing this line of conversation, i started talking about the concept of how "fiction isn’t reality," and how a frightening amount of people don't understand that; and i literally started telling him about antis - people on the internet who attack and harass others over "problematic" or "inappropriate" fictional interests.
i used well-known pop culture examples like: if you're into Game of Thrones and like Jaime and Cersei together or wanted Jon and Daenerys to end up together (i didn't think he would process the term "shipping," but clearly by the end of this conversation i think i was wrong), that people (antis) will say things like "you should die," and that you "support inc*st in real life," and that "you're disgusting."
i also used the examples of "toxic relationships" in pop culture, like the Joker and Harley Quinn, or Kylo Ren and Rey, and how if you’re into those kinds of fictional relationships that people (antis) will say that you "support toxic relationships," and that you are "glorifying abuse," and that it all "must be what you really want and believe is right or good."
and my fucking 65-year-old father literally goes: "I don’t understand. It’s a TV show. Don't they know it’s fake?"
queue my jaw dropping to the fucking ground because i'm like. YES. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT PRO-SHIPPERS ARE TRYING TO SAY AND THESE PEOPLE DON'T GET IT.
he was flabbergasted, my pals. the shock in his eyes was incredible to behold.
and, oh boy, that isn't even the best part, guys.
my father then says, "Don’t tell me it’s like that with anime too?"
and i said, "it's worse with anime."
and i fucking swear to you - no joke, on my life and baby Jesus' cradle - again my 65-year-old father looks at me and says, “It’s a fucken cartoon."
... ... ...
... i can't ...
i can't end this post better than that.

I think the reason I'm a bit iffy about most zutara shippers who call themesleves "pro Katara" (and lets be honest the tags pro katara/katara deserved better are mainly people building themselves a moral highground of "if you disagree with me, you clearly dilslike Katara and want her to suffer") is just the hypocrisy of it all.
Katara's consent was violated by Aang, yes. But Zuko threatening her and being a fucking creep in the "I'll save you from the pirates" scene was sexy and not at all the nightmare of any sane woman.
Katara's role as a healer is treated as her acting subservient and her loosing her feminist icon status. Unless she's healing/offering to heal Zuko.
Aang is immature and childish. But we will handily ignore Zuko, a whole ass 16 year old who's heir to a country throwing a temper tantrum because his girlfriend dared to speak to another man. [Frankly, in my opinion, Zuko isn't really ready for a serious romantic relationship, but yall arent ready for that conversation]
Aang is supposedly misogynistic, but Zuko's many instances of actual misogyny are swept under the rug. Aang is shown in canon to be incredibly supportive of Katara defying the patriarchy.
Supposedly Aang makes Katara do all the housework. Despite there being evidence to the contrary. Zuko has just recently learnt to brew tea.
Katara being the Avatar's wife is supposedly degrading. But if she were Zuko's wife, I'm sure she wouldn't be just a baby maker. (What a horribke thing to call a woman btw. Tall call your own mothers baby makers too???) Despite the fact that Izumi's mother hasn't even been mentioned by name in tlok. But yeah. She'd be afforded the respect she deserves I'm certain.
Aang is, on most accounts, supportive and respectful of Katara's opinions, even when he disagrees with them. Zuko openly mocks people who oppose him. I am going to make a longer post on the Southern Raiders episodes and how all of you watched that episode blindfolded or smth.
Aang comparing Appa being kidnapped (his last connection to his genocided people, the last vestige of his happy past) to Katara's anger over her mother is bad. But Zuko comparing mommy leaving his ass to Katara's mother getting brutally slaughtered in front of her ? Silence.
Aang supposedly needs Katara to mother him and that's a bad thing. But Azula, Mai and Ty Lee having to gentle parent Zuko almost everytime they interact is never talked about, despite the uncalled for verbal abuse that trio goes through from him.
Aang and Katara's 2 year age gap is creepy. But Zuko and Katara's 2 year age gap is fine. My bigest gripe with Zutara lovers is them completely erasing Katara's childishness and immaturity, in order for her and Zuko to have this mature, sexy relationship. She's 14, guys. 14.
This post really isn't meant to decry Zutara. I just want people who ship Zutara to get off their high horse of feminism and to accept that they're no better than the rest of us ship loving freaks. Wanting the main girl to bump uglies with the broody emo twink doesn't make you a modern day suffragette. Disliking a main canon pairing isn't a measure of your love for a female character.
Grow up.
Enjoy your ship like a normal person.

I don't know; sometimes I think shipcourse really needs to be tagged with unreality because the stuff I've seen is too unreal to be real.
Seeing people wailing about how they're the "sane and moral" ones because they shit themselves over every problematic thing in fiction is kind of trippy. People acting like shipping two fictional characters together is the equivalent of being a pedophile is really fucking unreal.
There's something about seeing people act like being pro-fiction means whatever bad thing they want is weird.
Seeing people who are worried about being "converted" or meeting a "proshiter", people who assume freely what people get off to, and acting like moral crusaders is bizarre.
I don't know; I just think it's kind of unsettling how many people can't separate fiction from reality to any degree at all.

Perfectly Imperfect
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CW: Features a f!reader, pet names such as princess and babe are used, reader is referred to as his girlfriend, established relationship, aged up characters (mid 20s), pro player Kunigami Rensuke, and yes, I refer to it as soccer because I'm American, also reader is going through a slight breakdown during this so there might be a touch of angst but it definitely leans toward hurt/comfort more.
A/N: I had a slightly rough day so ✨catharsis✨ and it also means this is kind of self ship coded. Get ready for self indulgence but feel free to insert yourself in this as well. And yes, it fades out before the good stuff. I wasn't feeling adding all of that so the hint of intimacy is definitely there but that's about it this time.
Tumblr media
The silence that met Kunigami Rensuke as he opened the front door of the house you two shared felt uncanny to him. He had been gone for almost a week recently for work but the two of you had called and video chatted every day that he was gone, at every opportunity the two of you could steal. He had even put up with a few of his teammates giving him shit for taking a video call with you while in the locker room before a game.
Hearing your voice kept Kunigami sane while he was away and he loved how excited you were to hear about his games and how his days were going in general. If you couldn't be there to share in the moments with him, then he still wanted a way to share everything with you anyway. In fact, he had been happy to hear you tell him that the next time he had to leave for a bit, you were going to be able to tag along with him since you worked out a way to be able to take your work with you while hitting the road with your boyfriend.
He had fully expected you to run and jump into his arms when he arrived home but instead the house seemed dead silent. He could smell something burning in the kitchen though so he followed the scent. Kunigami looked around, not seeing you but glad to see that nothing was actually burning in the kitchen. Still, it was a mess with bits of food everywhere and pots and pans overflowing in the sink. He even noticed that the garbage can looked like it was nearly going to spill over.
As he moved toward it, ready to take the bag out before getting started on cleaning up the kitchen, he heard you sniffling softly. Kunigami looked down and felt like his heart shattered.
He hadn't seen you because you were tucked into a corner, hugging your legs to your chest with your head resting on your knees. It was clear you were crying, your body softly trembling as the tears flowed down your cheeks.
He stopped what he was doing and moved toward you carefully. He knelt down beside you and took a sharp, shaky breath when he felt you flinch as his large hand lightly touched your shoulder.
"Baby, what's wrong?" he asked in a soft, soothing voice.
You looked up at him with a tear streaked face, eyes red and swollen. Each breath you took felt like it took so much effort as you tried to stop yourself from shaking. You opened your mouth but you couldn't seem to form any words so you quickly shut it again, biting your bottom lip so hard you nearly drew blood.
Kunigami gently lifted your face as you started to look away from him. He wiped at your tears and leaned in to press soft kisses on your temples and your forehead. He made himself as comfortable as he could on the floor beside you and pulled you closer so you were tucked safely under his arm.
"I'm so sorry, princess," he continued, shaking his head a little. He couldn't help but to blame himself. Every time the two of you had talked, however, you had seemed so upbeat and cheerful. He hated that he had missed any signs of you feeling this low. "Y'know, if you were feeling like this before, you coulda told me."
You nodded weakly as you rested your head on his shoulder. The truth was that you had been fine while your boyfriend was gone. The constant calls and video chats helped you miss him a little less. This feeling had come on suddenly when you realized that today was the day that Kunigami was coming home. You had been excited to have him back and you had only wanted to make him a nice dinner to show him how much you missed him.
Everything you tried to make seemed to burn or you managed to cut something too small or not small enough. It wasn't perfect and that was all that you wanted, to make something perfect for him. You should have known better, of course, because Kunigami would have been just as happy to come home to find takeout on the kitchen table waiting for him but he was always doing so much for you (or at least it felt like it) and you had just wanted to do this one thing for him.
You climbed into his lap and, of course, he let you, nuzzling his nose in your hair as you let out a soft sigh. You listened to his heartbeat for awhile with your eyes closed, feeling Kunigami's long fingers gently playing with your hair.
"I was just trying to make dinner for us," you finally said. Even to your own ears, your voice sounded so small. "It seemed like I couldn't do anything right today."
When he heard you choke down a sob, he sighed and wrapped his arms even tighter around you. "Only thing I need is my beautiful girlfriend in my arms again," Kunigami said with a soft smile. He felt like he almost couldn't breathe as you looked up at him. Your wide eyes and your pretty face couldn't be marred by the tears you had been crying earlier.
He leaned in and softly kissed you. As he felt your body relax against his, Kunigami relaxed as well. You meant the world to him and he knew how lucky he was to have someone like you in his life. It was the reason that he did so much for you without ever expecting anything in return. Just being with you was the only thing he needed.
Since he knew that there was nothing in the kitchen that could be a danger to either of you, he slipped his arms underneath you and scooped you up as he easily rose to his feet from the floor. You let your head rest lightly on one of his broad shoulders, your eyes closing as you breathed him in. Kunigami smelled like freshly laundered clothes with a hint of bergamot and citrus. It was a scent that, to you, distinctly belonged to your boyfriend.
He set you down in your shared bed before climbing in after you. His arms wrapped around you almost immediately, pulling you toward his chest. You gently peppered his jaw with little kisses, making Kunagami smile softly. His fingers threaded through your hair, pushing it off of your forehead. He gently tucked some hair behind your ear, letting his fingers linger slowly along the shell of you ear. He chuckled as he watched your eyes flutter closed for a moment, his touch making you tremble in a very different way.
"Feeling better, princess?" he softly asked, his already deep voice seemingly dropping another octave as he stared at you.
You nodded, feeling your face flush. Your body suddenly felt so warm but you didn't want to move, especially not as you felt Kunigami's fingers teasingly dipping under the bottom hem of your shirt.
"I promise to make you feel even better," he added, his lips already on your neck. Now that he had you in his arms again, Kunigami was going to do everything that he could to show you how much he missed you and just how perfect you were to him.

"Breaking your faith in humanity "... Truer words never spoken. There is knowing the true horror that was done to innocent civilians and being horrified by it. But then there is the ultimate sadness in how some people act now. How are people criticizing Paltrow for speaking the truth. Rape is not resistance!!!
Even on a mundane level, I can say as I first found you because of Buddie, I almost have no joy for it coming back. I'm almost grateful there were no shows this fall because it would have felt icky for me. But it still does even now. It feels vapid to find joy in something knowing how people suffered and are still suffering. I, of course, don't judge others who find solace in it. I will watch it and hope. I just find it hard to go back to a normal thing like shipping a fictional couple.
As always, I hope you're staying safe and sane. I hope you feel ok and maybe have the house situation figured out . xoxoxo
Hi darling!
I hope you're well. *hugs*
It's insane to me that the sentence, "Rape is not resistance" is something that actually needs saying. People who are truly against rape, are always against rape. They don't need convincing not to make Jews an exception. I have NEVER heard in any other context people saying, "Well, I'm against rape as an idea, but this specific case is okay."
If you're okay with some rapes, you've never truly been anti-rape.
But the fact that so many of those who say it, who supposedly justify it as anti-colonialist, are actually colonizers living on colonized land, is even more deranged, because it means either they're saying they're okay with they themselves, their families and fellow colonizer friends and colleagues being raped as well (I doubt that's what they mean), or they're applying this "notion" of rape being resistance in a discriminatory way, where rape is resistance so long as it's done to Jews living in the Jewish ancestral homeland. Which is not anti-colonialist at all, IS hypocritical and IS antisemitic. HOW can they take this stance, and not see how harmful to Jews it is? They're being pro-rape and anti-Jewish, while claiming they're motivated by empathy and concern for human rights!?
I'm so happy you found me thanks to my Buddie content, and I endlessly appreciate what an incredible, real ally to Jews you are. I'm generally very grateful for every 911 fan, who actually implements the show's notions of compassion, which include listening to marginalized groups about their own experiences (and Hamas' massacre, the motivation behind the war, the pain over the loss of so many Israelis and Jews by a nation which has survived a genocide, and still carries an inter-generational trauma because of it, the sense of betrayal over the rise in antisemitic incident on Oct 7 already, while the terrorists were still inside Israel, butchering, raping, beheading and burning people, these are OUR experiences. Ignoring us when we talk about them or telling us we're only motivated by bloodlust, an antisemitic trope, when we explain that we're much more concerned about liberating our hostages and preventing another massacre, that's speaking over us. Arguing with us on what is and isn't antisemitic, that's speaking over us, rather than listening to us. It's antisemitic in itself, and it's not something that's done to ANY other marginalized group).
I can't believe we're at the point where Jews have to beg people to just listen to us, listen as if we're human beings, and not caricatures of vampiric villains (again, a classic antisemitic trope), cruelly interested solely in destruction and death. But in response so many people just look at us, knowing there's a rise in antisemitism, and still go... "No."
When people in every fandom go around, not just blocking Jews and Jewish allies who believe a Jewish state has the right to exist in the Jewish ancestral land, but they're also telling others to block us, to silence our voices, to act like there is no pain and there are no victims on the Israeli and Jewish side of this conflict, it is hard to be enthusiastic about any fandom.
At the same time, I KNOW I'm living through a major trauma, the worst Jews have experienced since the end of the Holocaust. I've seen my maternal grandmother never really recover from the trauma she went through in the Holocaust. I've never seen her laugh without a touch of sadness and pain being there, she never went through one celebration without slipping aside for at least one moment and crying. After my paternal grandmother died, I discovered that her sister never had kids because of the Holocaust, and actually ended up taking her own life (up until our grandmother's passing, my sis and I were told she died of cancer). So I know how persistent trauma is. I know that the Holocaust did not end in May 1945, and I know that Oct 7 didn't end when Israel was freed of the 3,500 terrorists who invaded it that day. Oct 7 probably won't end even when the current war does. That's why I recognize how important it is to hold on to every bit of normalcy I can, to not let the trauma take over. And that's what fandom is in a sense. A semblance of normalcy.
Except fandom isn't normal anymore, not after I've seen incomprehensible amounts of hate and hypocrisy, including from people I trusted and liked, and thought liked me. My belief in the kindness of people (especially when it's people who love a show that is all about celebrating kindness) has been shaken to the core.
Which is why I currently honestly don't know what I'll do once s7 premieres. I'll watch it, obviously. And I am excited about some stuff I've seen. But will I write and gif? I don't know the answer yet. It's not a certain yes, it's not a certain no. I guess I'll see how I feel at every given moment. I'm not putting any pressure on myself one way or another. But I promise you that whether I post my Buddie content or not (let's be honest, if I watch 9-1-1, you better believe there will be Buddie content alive and kicking in my mind), I will never stop loving them, or thinking they're the ultimate battlefield boyfriends, and sweetest little family unit with Chris. :) And I know that if I do post, it would be an honor to be in this fandom with you, and those like you, who care about my people, and actually listen to Jewish voices (all of them, not just the few they can tokenize).
So... THANK YOU. I can't say that enough. And yes, I've moved into my new home, though it's not quite what it needs to be yet. But I'm getting there! Tiny steps still count, right? I'm sending you massive amounts of love, always! xoxox

So You'd Like to Fuck a Villain: Romance Novel Recommendations
Have you gotten caught up in a villain ship? Are you, perhaps, what might be called a villainfucker?
The issue with stanning for villains and wanting them to have romantic love and happiness and possibly group sex, is that they often don't. At least, not onscreen. Some of the most popular romantic ships, obviously, have been villain ships--Reylo spawned a wave of romance novelists (though, I might add, many do not actually write villain-centric romance novels, which is fine), Darklina powered no small part of Shadow and Bone's publishing success... and let's be real, the success of the soon-to-be-ill-fated-from-what-I'm-hearing TV show. On a darker level, Interview with the Vampire took off in no small part because people love the tainted love that is Louis and Lestat, where maybe? They're both villains? (Definitely more Lestat, but you know.)
You know what the great thing about a romance novel is? The villain has to get a happy ending. They just must. It's a rule. If a villain is a lead, the HEA is guaranteed (rhymes), or it's not a romance novel.
So, for Cupid's birthday, I'm recommending some of my favorite villainfucking romance novels. I just think that we deserve it.
CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
Wicked Villains by Katee Robert.
As you might guess, this series is in fact about villains getting their happy ending, full stop. And it does so by adapting Disney villain ships and placing them in a contemporary setting full of organized crime, sex clubs, and deals gone wrong. It is fun, it is campy, and it is very, very sexy. Check the trigger warnings (which Robert typically lists for each book on her website)--some of these do feature heavy BDSM and CNC.
The diversity of the pairings is so appreciated--while my favorite thus far is the first, Desperate Measures (Jafar/Jasmine with a mob wife "you killed my father" spin, for those curious) you get several triads (Hades/Hercules/Meg, Beast/Gaston/Belle, Ursula/Ariel/Eric, to name a few) and the ever-coveted sapphic Maleficent/Aurora moment. I don't think there's a straight person in this collection of characters. Contemporary romance can be a hard sell for me, especially in terms of villainy... But these are just a ride.
HISTORICAL ROMANCE
Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas.
Obviously, if you haven't read Devil in Winter yet, you need to read Devil in Winter. It's a classic--not just of historical romance, but romance in general. Though, pro-tip: I would recommend reading the preceding It Happened One Autumn first, as that's where the villainy takes place. Devil in Winter is about a recovering villain--a rake who did a very, very bad thing (kidnapping his best friend's lady love) simply because he did not want to get a job. I mean.....
Sebastian St. Vincent is a soft touch villain, and not just because he's super good at touching. You know he's going to roll over and beg for it with his seemingly-gentle, secretly-iron-willed heroine; but it's watching him get there that's so fun. His bark is worse than his bite, but he does deliver quite a bark (and quite a bite). If you like 'em snarky and slutty, read this book.
Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt.
If you like a blond villain who seems better at lounging about than doing manual labor, Valentine Napier takes what St. Vincent was doing to another level of insanity. St. Vincent is sane; Valentine is not, and he's a lot less fun about his kidnappings. Fortunately, his heroine (dispatched to spy on and steal from him) does not take any shit.
This is a book for those who like them loony, because I really don't think Valentine reforms in the least. He just falls in love, all while running around naked in bedazzled, open robes and brandishing a knife. At least he's good in bed and keeps giant, nude portraits of himself in his own house. Keep in mind that this book does delve into some pretty massive childhood trauma, including all kinds of abuse.
Villain I'd Like to F...
This anthology of novellas delves into five stories of historical romance villainy, by five great authors. I'm going to list each novella and its author, as these collections typically disband after a period of time, allowing the authors to sell the novellas individually (though you often can find the collections in online libraries like Libby). In the brackets!
[ Lady Viper and the Bastard by Eva Leigh.
Do you enjoy Dangerous Liaisons? Try this delightfully sexy Georgian-era novella about a widowed vamp and an illegitimate libertine, teaming up to break apart two young lovers (for a price). Except what happens when these two assholes start to catch feelings? Notable in that these characters are in their forties, know themselves, and do engage in some fun role-playing.
Seven Sinful Nights by Nicola Davidson.
Our young-but-ready widowed heroine is toiling in the service of her dickish in-laws... Until the owner of the local gambling hell (who isn't above murder and torture, and does enjoy dominating a bit) shows up demanding payment for her brother-in-law's debts. Those who love an innocent heroine lured by the darkness will love this one, a she very much goes willingly to her "doom" of being his mistress for a week, and loves every minute of it. It's sexy, it's sweet, she also loves a torture moment, there's some exhibitionism.
The Gangster's Prize by Joanna Shupe.
A Gilded Age gangster is thrown off balance by the young woman who comes to him demanding help in finding her missing father. But wait... who's in his dungeon as we speak? Could it be? Her dad? Joanna doesn't pull her punches here, and it's delightfully wacky. Watching our hapless villain hero be like "uhh, what screams from the dungeon" while our heroine looks for her father... who he has captive.. is hilarious.
The Bootlegger's Bounty by Adriana Herrera.
Did someone say sort-of pirates? Our heroine is a nightclub singer, and she books passage to New York with a dangerous rum runner. There's a lot of sex in this one, and--delightfully--a triad, as there happens to be a young gentleman who catches the eye of both our singer and our rum runner...
The Conquering of Tate the Pious by Sierra Simone.
Hedonistic nuns? A Norman invader (in more ways than one) who turns out to be a lady conqueror? As in, a conqueror who is a lady and conquers ladies? I think yes. Our proud abbess Tate is ready to stand up to the Wolf, but what happens when the Wolf is very sexy and cruel in the best possible way? ]
The Prince of Broadway by Joanna Shupe.
If there's one thing Joanna Shupe loves, it's a hero (or a villain turned hero) who hates your dad. This book opens with our casino-owning hero beating the shit out of someone, and when he meets the headstrong spoiled rich girl who wants to open a casino for ladies and needs mentorship... He takes her up on it. All while planning to take down her father (as revenge!!!).
While Clay isn't a super hardcore bad guy, he is pretty violent and pretty diabolical. What makes this book is, of course, his dynamic with Florence, and her defiance of norms that quickly has him completely besotted. This book has a very good grovel, and it should. Does anyone deserve Florence?
... and after reading this one, you can mosey over to Shupe's next book, The Devil of Downtown, in which a bad, bad gangster gets his ass emotionally kicked by Florence's goody goody angelic sister.
The Dragon and The Pearl by Jeannie Lin.
This is another one that benefits from reading its previous book, Butterfly Swords, first. In that novel we're introduced to the treacherous warlord our heroine is fleeing--Li Tao. Lin doesn't shy away from his intimidation factor: he even gets into a sword fight (that turns into an outright brawl, lmao) with the hero. In this novel, Li Tao gets full focus, kidnapping a former emperor's concubine to get information out of her.
What follows is a match of wits that gradually gives way to two manipulative, emotionally closed off people falling madly in love with each other while being unable to say it. Li Tao is a cold, seemingly-unfeeling villain-as-hero, and he really pushes how far he's willing to go to reach his end goals in this book. Also, there's a sex deal. If that matters to you.
Daring and The Duke by Sarah MacLean.
Again, one that does in fact benefit from reading the two preceding books, Wicked and The Wallflower and Brazen and The Beast (fortunately, they're both good!). Ewan, our titular duke, is the villain of both--and he is completely batshit insane in his pursuit of his childhood sweetheart, Grace. Who, for reasons relating to villainy, wants absolutely nothing to do with him.
This is a book-long grovel the way Sarah MacLean does it best--with abject shame and humiliation. Ewan is put through the ringer: and he should be, because he did a really bad thing! And was legitimately a nutjob of a villain! But that's what makes it so, so good.
PARANORMAL/FANTASY ROMANCE
The Four Horsemen by Laura Thalassa.
This series has the rather bold take of "what if the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Fucked". Starting with Pestilence, bleeding into War and Famine, and ending with Death, this series is a bit bonkers. But it doesn't let up on the extent of the villainous heroes' determination to lay waste to the world. There is a lot of gore. There is a lot of moral ambiguity.
But it's also legitimately funny. Pestilence discovers the joys of a bathtub. Death receives his first blowjob and is like "I don't know, maybe the apocalypse is bad". It's campy, and it's fun, and it leans the fuck in to the concept. I would recommend reading these in order, as the love stories stand alone but the overall arc leads to a big finish (and there are lots of finishes in between, if you know what I'm say--)
The Tenebris Trilogy by Kathryn Ann Kingsley.
If you're interested in the occult and some Lovecraftian vibes set in a pseudo-1920s world, this is it. Our heroine is on the search for her brother, and who is to assist but his stuffy-hot professor who happens to be a cult leader and has perhaps merged his body with that of a Cthulu monster?
What's interesting about this series (which cannot be read as standalones, and must be read in order) is that our hero is legitimately loony tunes, and our heroine is into it. She falls in love with him and his monsters, and that does... extend to the physical. (Tentacles, everyone! Shadow tentacles! Think Venom.) I will add that there's a lovely secondary romance with a trans heroine (with a hero that's not a villain) and it is excellent, but at one point an antagonist is transphobic towards her. An attempted off-page forced detransition occurs. The main heroine is totally supportive of the secondary heroine and stops it, but read with caution.
Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole.
This rare villainess/hero romance sees a sorceress heroine take a deposed demon king captive to coerce him into impregnating her so that she can bear his heir (all for villainous purposes, of course). Yes. So this book is heavy on the dubcon--lots of edging, lots of people chained to beds--but to be frank? He is into it. We have a stern, morally upright hero being driven to the brink by the baddest of bad girls, and it's great.
This book is a bit controversial because of the content, and I do recommend checking out my IAD Cheat Sheet before reading for a full list of triggers/details about the world of Immortals After Dark. But it reads fairly well on its own, and I personally adore it. The sex is hot, the romance is angsty, he gets back at her in every possible way, and it's so fun to see a villainess take center stage and bring out the dark side of such a noble hero.
Dreams of a Dark Warrior by Kresley Cole.
Here, we focus on an immortal valkyrie heroine who's had centuries of near-misses with her would-be Berserker love--every time she kisses him, he remembers his past lives with her and promptly dies in increasingly gruesome ways. He's always be good and loving to her... which is why she's so shocked when he returns to her, this time in the form of an immortal-hating torturer who's taken her captive.
This one is dark--yes, he does torture her (not that badly, but there are other scenes of torture at the hands of different villains which are... bad). But if you can hang in there, I think you'll find a very compelling romance with a legitimately troubled, intense hero and a woman he can't get out of his head. There's also a very, very good bathtub scene that turns into "let me blindfold you so you can't see my hideous scars".
Lothaire by Kresley Cole.
The villain romance to end all villain romances (best read after Dreams, so you get the one-two punch of a pair of very different villainous heroes). What happens when you mix a 3,000-year-old megalomaniacal vampire with a 24-year-old whip-smart human woman he believes houses the soul of the goddess he's supposed to wed? A fucking ride, and possibly my favorite romance ever, that's what.
Lothaire goes HARD. It goes hard on the villainy (this is a story of a villain falling in love, not a villain finding redemption), it goes hard on the sex (with possibly one of the most infamous sex scenes in romance, and I love every word of it), and it goes hard on the angst. As much as Lothaire fucks with Ellie's head and is determined to deny his love for her, she's determined to one-up on him and will never, ever break. I think this book is always best summed up in a scene early on where he kisses her, bites her lip, and draws back, smugly expecting horror--only to find her grinning through the blood and pulling him in for another kiss. Tell me that isn't villain romance perfection.
Sworn to the Shadow God by Ruby Dixon.
Not so much a super hard villain romance as it is a "falling in love with Death himself" book, this wacky romance finds our gamer girl heroine falling through a portal to another land and... yes, sworn as the mortal companion of the God of Death as he attempts to complete a trial set before him by the father god. It is funny, it is sexy, it's adventurous, and it is for the Reylos.
You think I'm joking. No. He is very clearly modeled after Kylo Ren, and he sweeps around in dark cloaks and emo smashes about being the God of the Death, and it is glorious. He's less bad than he is detached and uncaring, but, you know... Death. By the end of the book, though? He cares very much about one particular person.
Look, man. Check your triggers always, especially with romance novels about villains. These won't work for everyone. But I imagine... if you like a villain... some of these are for you.

Scrolling through the pro sasuke tag, as any sane person does, you come across a lot of different takes on Sasuke.
We have to lay down some ground rules on being a Sasuke stan here, because I've seen some outrageous shit on that tag.
These are, in my personal opinion, the most important rules:
Now, you're immediately disqualified the moment you have tagged anything along the lines of "pro sasusaku", "pro konoha", "pro tobirama(that little bitch)" or "pro itachi". The last one is the only one that can be just a little debatable.
Can't emphasize the pro ss one enough, y'all can't ship sasusaku and support Sasuke, those two are mutually exclusive. (Putting less emphasis on the other ones, cuz personally, I thankfully haven't seen many pro konoha or pro tobirama posts that include Sasuke. Thankfully.)
You're also immediately disqualified, if you put your ships first, and Sasuke second. Sasuke is more than his ships, ffs. If you can't discuss his character without bringing in whoever you ship him with, then it's a problem. The moment you prioritize your romantic fantasies over Sasuke's own convictions, is the moment you are now stripped of the privilege of being a Sasuke stan (cough looking at the sasusakus and sasuhinas rn cough)
That is all, thank you.
Pls don't take this too seriously btw

Hello, I' ve been reading your blog for quite some time and its existence makes me feel better both in general and especially when I get really annoyed and frustrated by crazy zutara shippers (not the sane ones, of course).
I would like to add some observations I made and haven't seen here. I've read many pro-zutara metas, both mentioned here and the ones I accidentaly found myself, and I notice one thing. The shippers often (always?) claim that Katara and Zuko MUST be together, but almost never say that they actually WANT to be together. It's the shippers who want zutara to happen, but not the characters themselves. And these people complain that in kataang Katara has no voice!
Literally: Zutara shippers: In our ship Katara can finally voice her wants and needs and be heard, both by Zuko and us, since we all respect her so very much! Katara, voicing it: I am not Zuko's girlfriend! *seriously, that was the scene used as proof for this pro-zutara statement in one of the metas mentioned in the ask recently* Zutara shippers: Ignore that, she's in denial.
It became even better in the so-called "official dissertation" (gosh, there are so many lies and misinterpretations, I could talk about every single one of them, if you want) where the author wrote just that: "Sure, Zuko and Katara expressed no explicit romantic interest in one another in canon" just admitting: "I typed a six-part post explaining how this pairing, both participants of which don't want to be a romantic couple at all, should be canon".
Oh, yeah, that is a BIG thing with zutarians. It's exactly because they know that Zuko and Katara don't actually have feelings for each other, that they have to find other (often super convoluted) reasons for this "romance" to happen.
The Fire Nation HAS to be the "feminist" nation while everywhere else is a hellhole where women are nothing but property and baby-makers. The Fire Nation HAS to suddenly only be able to peacefully co-exist with the rest of the world if it suddenly stops being racist over night, being not only okay with the Fire Lord marrying the daughter of lider of a tribe they consider inferior and barbaric, but actually seeing her as the ONLY option for bride.
The Gaang, Katara's family and tribe, and basically every male ever, all NEED to see her as basically their maid and not actually care about who she is, so Zuko will be the only decent option for husband. Zuko NEEDS to be a billion times more traumatized by everything he went through while Katara is the only one that, by some miracle, can "fix" him just by existing so she'll be forced into the role of wife/caretaker/therapist, otherwise she'll psychologically destroy him.
Aang and Mai (as well as other characters like, say, Jet) NEED to be completely selfish, uncaring, abusive, evil tyrants that will inevitably become such unbelievable threats that they just HAVE to be killed so the possibility of Katara and Zuko so much as having ANY positive feelings towards them, let alone choose to be with them, is just no longer on the table.
Zutarians know they HAVE to make Zuko and Katara basically be forced into a relationship with each other, because it's very clear that they'd never pursue it willingly.
And somehow, that's "true love" instead of, at best (and this is me being VERY generous here) a mutually benefitial arranged marriage with no real feelings involved, or at worst just two people giving into despair and never, ever finding real happiness in this relationship they feel trapped in because said relationship was a big mistake.

A pro-Kairi rant
This here is why I don't want canon undeniable confirmed no work around Sora/Kairi in future KH in a nutshell. This is my personal ramble I just want to get off my chest on my own blog. This is nothing against people that ship it.
Tumblr media
It's not because I'm some ew yucky girl hater. It's the opposite. I've always loved Kairi and any sane fan will tell you she's been treated like crap through the entire series.
The moment she's confirmed to be "safe", she gets left behind. Again and again and again. She just wants to be included. She wants to break out of this role and is beat down every time she tries to.
Tumblr media
KH3 does that again. MoM does that AGAIN. Like it's so deliberately disrespectful. Your role is to stay behind and stare longingly at the skyline.
Tumblr media
Again and again we're shown that she tries to break out of this and can't. And no KH3 doesn't fix it. She once again has to rely on her Princess powers to be allowed to be relevant, when we're shown she wants to be actively a part of this with her fighting prowess. What does she get for that? Killed to be rescued again. I know some people thought Remind was a some great gotcha moment but really it just confirmed the already existing status quo.
And any moments to give her some development get deliberately pushed aside (Very cool we never see her training) or explained away (you can't learn during your adventure like EVERY other character, you specifically have to stay behind for this).
If the series wants to have this relationship, why go out of their way to cut her out over and over? Just as an example: We see Sora excitedly text Riku, why isn't he also talking about Kairi? No really, I'm asking. Even if she's in the timeless forest (sorry guys we can't show you a fun little level for that too much work ugh)(we just really needed Kairi to write a onesided letter to Sora and to remind Lea of Xion - because even here she's not allowed to have a moment for herself), a simple "Man, I wish I could send Kairi a message but I can't reach her there." line would've done a lot. Why make it so purposefully onesided? Why make it so sad and cruel.
Then you have the whole Winnie Pooh - Kairi parallel in KH3 plus the awkward paopu scene that really hammer home how things have changed, they have changed, expectations aren't working out. There's plenty other posts that dig deep into this.
If Kairi as she is now "gets officially together" with Sora, while she's still not allowed to develop her own identity, actually have her own moments, break out of her role as the pining left behind love interest... well maybe some people don't care but I do. It would feel so rotten. The heteronormative amatonormative mainstream media standard that the girl character doesn't need development, she can just be there to be longed after. You know when you watch a TV show and he was a boy she was a girl syndrome starts and you feel that uncomfortable feeling? It's that.
I thought we'd at least get something out of MoM but even here her moment gets stolen by Sora. I don't care if it's a heart connection or whatever, on screen I am once again Sora. (Just to be clear I love my boy Sora I'm just looking at this from an outside the game perspective.)
Actually there's a great video on that here.
Sora and Riku's relationship has been developed over the course of several games. We know them as people, we know their bond. Why should I care about Sora and Kairi in a romantic setting when the games go out of their way to give me next to nothing beyond "she's the girl 🤪you know". Like she's just a prop.
Kairi deserves better.
Tumblr media
Let her develop her own connections. Let her actually find out about her past in RG. Let her finally be an actual equal to Sora and Riku. And then and only then can I be behind canon Sora/Kairi.
I wish I could word this better but I think about this and I'm just filled with indignation and I blank out.
Not because I'm a hater, but because I think Kairi deserves fucking better, do I not want a romantic relationship for her. A girl character is more than just a damn accessory. KH3 didn't do a great job with most characters, but at least in their respective games Aqua, Xion and Namine are allowed to have actual depth, motivation and feelings beyond a rigid role.
In conclusion *big sigh* if a canon romantic relationship for Kairi does take place without any of the above mentioned, I will be severely disappointed.
Now is the last chance to give Kairi the treatment she actually deserves. Considering the track record I don't exactly have high hopes.
P.S. Personally I think KH works best without romantic duos anyway. Platonic bonds can and are just as deep, romanticism just gets placed at the top of the hierarchy - usually - except KH always goes out of its way to show us that that doesn't matter. You don't see people shipping Aqua with Ven and yet no one would question they care deeply about one another. Romance isn't a requirement for love.
P.P.S. Why didn't you give her the damn ribbon Sora, that would've been a really sweet moment.

I will not tolerate any interaction with any of you. I hate you and want you very far from me /srs
This also aply for neutral/"anti-anti" people. I don't care what excuses u use, being tolerable and apologist for all this stuff is not okay and just as wrong as them. Stay away.
if any of my moots/followers ever see me following one of the above, please tell me because I would never follow someone like this knowingly!!
On a lighter note, I don't have anything against NSFW artists who do safe, sane stuff with adult characters. Y'all are cool.

romione (i am just forcing everyone to talk about my fave ships with these asks hehe)
aaand i'm super here for that! thank you for the ask! Ship It!
What made you ship it?
writing out these thoughts XD i thought i was kinda meh about them, and then i really stopped to consider how they might work together and then realized i kinda liked it actually.
also i sincerely apologize for inflicting this on your eyeballs but (oh to be able to spoiler things on tumblr) a hermione x rose weasley gift fic i recently received and really enjoyed. i saw a lot of ron's characterization in the way the author wrote rose - and if those relationship dynamics work for me, why not the regular sane-people version 😂
What are your favorite things about the ship?
odd couple vibes! pairings where the boy is the softer more sensitive one and the girl is the 'harder' more driven, more uptight one! that makes sense for their backgrounds, their families they come from and their statuses in the wizarding world! i like it actually.
so many fun directions for character exploration. hermione navigating a big extended family! molly not quite getting it but trying her best to be supportive! i dig it actually.
also height difference!! hahaha.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
i see this ship getting a lot of hate tbh -- okay well not hate but "they'd be incompatible" type opinions -- and i don't know how representative that is, i certainly hope there are pro-romione circles where that's not the popular opinion, but "i ship it" feels like the unpopular opinion 😂. hermione doesn't Need her romantic and life partner to be her intellectual equal! people don't need to have perfectly aligned strengths and hobbies to be compatible in a relationship and characters certainly don't need it to have an interesting story! the odd couple vibes, so different it could never work, except that it does - it's part of the charm!
