as an autistic person please do not message me asking to discuss dnp legitimately being autistic. there are behaviours and traits that i relate to from my experience and i don’t think there is a problem with talking about that in a lighthearted way (ie saying ‘me coded’ etc) but i think it’s wildly inappropriate to try and legitimately diagnose people when 1. their medical status is none of my fucking business and 2. i don’t know them!! i watch what they choose to put out and am a big fan of their content but i don’t know them and their day to day lives let alone their experiences and perceptions of things (ie sensory experiences etc)
sorry to rant but this has just made me feel super uncomfortable. it’s not fair on them and it’s not fair to come forward to people who haven’t consented to your contact asking to be that intrusive in their lives. like just enjoy the content, enjoy the relatability, and it’s okay for that to be enough without making it uncomfortable for everyone involved

The BG3 characters on Tiktok
Wyll: has 2 accounts. One is for fitness, dancercize, calisthenics, and a little bit posing while flexing. The other is an unhinged BookTok account where he cosplays and acts out romance scenes with himself, stitches cosplay character actors with himself. Dramatic poetry, songs, reenacting Broadway play moments. Responds to every comment.
I would also accept a children's entertainment performer type account from him.
Shadowheart: Silent poses while staring down the camera. Almost every video is the same, but they all pop off in popularity saying she looks mysterious and beautiful. She uses the camera to do her eyeliner and outfit checks. No editing, always short videos, never replies in the comments. Manages to get makeup 💄 deals and free outfits sent to her all the time. Puts in mimal effort
Karlach: someone else films her just being herself. She has several viral videos. Sometimes she plans them, like seeing how much cereal she can eat in one sitting or if she can punch down an old shed she found without using any tools. Captions are usually just some version of a meysmash or one word in all capital letters.
Astarion: Influencer that got all his followers by gossiping and sniping at other influencers in their comment sections or making call-out posts but if they're unpopular he turns off comments or deletes them and pretends he didn't do anything. Posts thirst traps that would be extremely cringe but people fall for it because he's pretty. Never does "getting ready" videos without having already gotten ready off camera and faking that his hair is just naturally Like That. Ends up with a niche fan base that is extremely feral for him and he uses them to target other accounts and harass people who annoy him. Or when he's bored.
Laezel: her entire account is just clips the Shadowheart takes of her mispronouncing words or being irritable. She gains a surprising amount of followers. There starts to be an underground plot to figure out if shafowheart and laezel live together, with fans pointing out background items that match. Neither of them address it directly.
Halsin: it... it's a nature channel. Camera is set up on a log or something at a bad angle and he either whittles in silence for 15 minutes and then shows u a duck, or the camera is in his hands shaking and being fumbled regularly with his thumb half over the mic and the view isn't always in focus but you're pretty sure he's telling you about the symbiotic relationship of moss on a tree. Most of his comment section is people asking him to take his shirt off.
Gale: his tiktok would be exactly what is VA's tiktok already is probably honestly ajsdgjdhdhjg. But OK, so he would absolutely wear velvet outfits and spend 30+ minutes describing one book at a time per video feom his giant library. Sometimes does wine reviews, or cheese reviews. Mixed in is short videos of Tara snoring or her paws twitching in her sleep.

Fossil Novembirb 5: It's Getting Hot In Here
Tumblr media
Sandcoleus by @drawingwithdinosaurs
Global warming is nothing new for the planet, and even in the Cenozoic we've had our share of rapid warming events - the most notable one being the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). This event, taking place 56 million years ago, was the result of rapid carbon release from the North Atlantic Igneous Province - aka, a volcano exploded, released a bunch of greenhouse gases, and suddenly global temperatures jumped somewhere between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius (depending on location) in a very short period of time - sound familiar?
Given the obvious parallels to the current day, this event has been studied extensively, though only in a few spheres. We know that plants changed dramatically, with broad leafed plants spreading around the world and turning it into a global tropical forest, even at the polls - leading to interesting adaptations towards the strange light cycles at high latitudes. The world was wetter, and greener, and the change lead to the evolution of new herbivory methods in insects. Mammals got smaller, spread everywhere, and diversified. A mass extinction occurred in the oceans, with microorganisms seeing a larger drop in diversity than during the end-Cretaceous extinction. More calcified algae flourished in the more acidic waters.
But what happened to birds?
Tumblr media
Anachronornis by @otussketching
Turns out, we're not quite sure. Bird fossils before the event are rare, and after are so diverged and varied that it's difficult to know what happened because of the event, and what happened before and just didn't fossilize. Luckily, scientists (... me) are on the case! And there were a few ecosystems that straddle the time around the event, such as the one for this post: the Willwood Formation.
This ecosystem in Wyoming takes place over the late Paleocene through the early Eocene, covering the entire PETM period. And while it showcases many different aspects of this transition, we're of course here for the birds! Not only was there Gastornis, because it was a ubiquitous presence in the Northern Hemisphere following the PETM, there were also many other weird early kinds of birds, all across the avian family tree.
Tumblr media
Paracathartes by @drawingwithdinosaurs
Sandcoleus is one of the more notable tree birds from this ecosystem, being a relative of living mousebirds but in North America (rather than Africa, where they are found today). In fact, lots of different tree birds were present, indicating that the current dominance of Passeriformes - so called "perching birds" - was not always the case. In fact, Paracathartes was also present - our first Palaeognath, an early Lithornithid! - and it also may have been able to perch in the trees, and certainly seems to have been a decent flier.
There were also Geranoidids like Palaeophasianus and Paragrus, which were once thought of as pheasant-like and crane-like respectively, but may now actually be Palaeognaths - and some of the earliest known flightless ones to boot! That said, said, other than being long legged flightless birds, we know little about their ecologies - they may have been herbivorous, and as tropical forest dwellers, could have had similar lifestyles to the living cassowary.
Tumblr media
Primoptynx by @otussketching
And, of course, there was also Anachronornis, the half-screamer-half-duck thing, showcasing how waterfowl were experimenting with a variety of different niches during this ecological explosion. And the large variety of new small mammals didn't go unnoticed either - while other early owls are known from Europe, Primoptynx was both the oldest and the biggest, probably thanks to all the new small mammals to eat! There were also possible ground raptors, similar to Bathornis, though they have not been named.
While there are many questions left to answer, it is clear that the PETM had a major effect like it did on everything else on the planet during that time - and the tropical ecologies that they evolved in during the early Eocene would have many implications, especially for where different clades live today!

In some ways it would help if yanderes drugged me up to keep me groggy! My stitches are starting to come out and I’m better enough to get grumpy or sad or tired over feeling sore and having to be so delicate with my mouth. I mean, the prescription pain stuff makes my tummy sick, but a yandere can handle that. Sick babies mean more to dote on! I like that handy dandy anon went right to whump because there was a part of my brain that did think “you know what would be fucked up 😈” and thought about yanderes trying to poke at my poor sensitive mouth… I’m just too much of a baby and too sensitive, so I know I’d be a sniveling mess if they even threatened the possibility. Thanks for the nice words op, and for handy dandy anon, I hope your procedure goes well and you get to enjoy tons of nice whump thoughts as you heal up!
Post-surgery whump is its own special niche I wish there was more of <3 I mean the post-surgery comfort is also good, of course, don't get me wrong, but the sense of control you get turning your own pain into something enjoyable is... So satisfying <3 Time and place for everything of course. I'm currently dreading my next surgery because I hate the uncool reality that recovery will be boring sort of painful and scary.
Just imagine a yandere who keeps irritating your sensitive mouth and "accidentally" hitting you in the jaw when they play with you or jabbing your sore gums with your toothbrush before bed. And then holding you and rocking you, forcing you your pain meds crushed up and mixed with yogurt. They know it makes you feel a little sick, that's why they give you some bland food! Something gentle on your stomach. Maybe you can get a slice of toast to help your turning tummy if you can eat up all that yogurt.
They've got you wrapped tight and "sleeping" on your side so if you puke, it doesn't choke you. You're probably having a hard time sleeping, but that's why they're here, cuddling you and stroking your cheek lovingly (and further irritating your sore mouth). The more you squirm the more they shush you-- it's okay, they know a pacifer would hurt right now, so you can't have that, but if you want, they can try rubbing a mouth-safe numbing cream on your gums. It's just gonna hurt a little bit while they make sure they've got it in the right spot, rubbing your gums over and over...
If just asking the question makes you burst into sobs, they'll shush you for being dramatic, before going back to gently rocking you.

I really like AU where Jounouchi is a singer for no reasons but I think punk/rock suit him well (that hot ? )
I also see an Idol Au where Kaiba was the number one fan of Jou and find it funny, could see Jou wearing many outfits ! ⭐️
Acting is good to but I think it go better with Kaiba, you know handsome tall man, win all the first roles
💜
Jou would be super hot in a rock or punk band. 😍 I'm not sure my heart can take it. I always loved the idea of him being someone who could sing, probably because his Japanese VA also had a minor singing career. Great AUs for hot and raunchy post-shows/gig hookups too hahaha. (I have a one-tracked mind.)
There's a lovely post-canon fic (WIP) called Idolized by Lafeae and MistressArafax that covers the scenario you mentioned where Jou has become an idol and Kaiba finds himself unwittingly a fan. Might be time to re-read that one.
Haha, it's true, Kaiba as a character, especially as he's often depicted in fandom, fits the actor niche very well--a tall, attractive man gunning for lead dramatic roles. Someone who cares about The Craft. He'd be terrible at a lot of other parts of the job, though, like doing promo or generally rubbing elbows and getting along with the cast and crew. But people will forgive a pretty face for a lot. And we should just count ourselves lucky that he's not overtly abrasive/abusive as he could be.

have you done a “how I would fix that movie” meta post? I’m also interested in your stricklake manifesto or something about guillermo del toro’s horror sensibilities and toa
send me a meta prompt (currently closed); thank you for the ask!
how did you know exactly what prompted this lol
stricklake manifesto is...tentatively forthcoming. possibly. probably. stay tuned. while i know i've certainly thought about how i'd fix the movie (and not even purely for niche side blorbo reasons), but i'm not sure how compelling (or coherent) that end product actually is. 🤔
unfortunately my fixit of the movie starts roughly thirty seconds after bellroc vaporizes that poor pigeon in chicago (or wherever metrocity is) and diverges wildly from there. tldr: someone on team trollhunter remembers they're in a gdt show, and asks just why are they all blindly following merlin, anyway. is it barb? god, i want it to be barb. obviously blinky is like "because he's the esteemèd merlin ambrosius, duh" while all three changelings just look directly into the camera. merlin blusters. barb backs off.
then, once merlin wanders out of earshot, she asks again.
i do think that would be probably the biggest single change. i'm very self-conscious when i sit down in my lil sandbox that i don't want to give barb another job; she has enough already, and she gets mommed by the fandom in a way i don't always think is malicious but which nevertheless generally rubs me wrong. but truly: who else is doing it like her? okay, sure, there's jim: until the last four episodes of trollhunters, his actual, textual superpower is his humanity. he then gets browbeaten into discarding it—the quality that has, until now, been his unique and cited qualification—because the guy who made an amulet out of his student's severed hand acted like he had some kind of moral high ground.
barb, meanwhile, is also an extraordinarily human human. she's the normie! she's the clueless mundane, a single mother dragged into the supernatural by her only son.  and while she does freak out—rightly! understandably!—when the supernatural puts her and her loved ones in danger, she never speaks against it just for being different. obviously stricklander is the example i've thought about most here: she's mad when he comes back (again, rightly), but her objections are because you lied to and endangered and my son, not because you're a dirty changeling. she's mad (and hurt) when jim lies about fighting off goblins, but because she's scared for him! once the masquerade is broken, she's immediately on his side. she's also the only character to even try to make merlin answer for trollifying jim, even if it's presented humorously. best girl.
so. back to this theoretical fixit: i think barb would be the most natural choice to start the questioning, here. blinky would still push back a little, but with merlin elsewhere, nomura and stricklander don't have to worry about being nice; maybe aaarrrgghh would even chime in on their side (what exactly do the gumm-gumms think of emrys, anyway?). it's not an easy conversation. it's also not the last one. but it starts. for a series that is otherwise unusually arthurian, arthur in trollhunters is conspicuous by his absence. but you have merlin. you have morgana. you also—pace wizards' giant slimy monster, who was cute, but completely overlooked preexisting developments—have the lady of the goddamn lake: legendary enchantress, giver of excalibur, single mother of the best of knights.
and, most importantly, the one who seals merlin in a fucking tree.
u see where i'm going with this.
once barb starts that question—well. i make no claims that this is recognizable, but you did ask how i would do it, lol. from this i can't help but feel it would cascade pretty dramatically. if stricklander and nomura united behind her, i think jim would follow. claire and toby after him. once the humans (and adjacent) are convinced, i don't think blinky could hold out any longer; maybe the smarter version of him other people keep seeing could be brought around to some kind of "trust, but verify." soft and stupid as i am about wretched wizard blorbos, obviously the order are still being assholes. we don't want them to actually burn it all down. but is that what they're actually trying to do? or is this just another received merlinian dictum?
god—and if they got to talk to nari about it! once again, one of the biggest failures of wizards (and rott) was how utterly it sidelined its characters in favor of punchy punchy bang bang. this i know have written about somewhere: jim's reduction to a vicarious highschool bully fantasy, how bellroc was flattened into cartoonish, beautifully rendered cardboard-cutout evil, while somehow still staying the most consistent character in the room. stricklander—whose entire character arc in trollhunters was built on 1.) the infinite possibility of an individual for change and 2.) being the smartest bastard in the room—took the first step into his new life by marrying barb and then immediately paid for it with the stupidest death possible. (see a longer and much keener essay about this here, from @millennialmoviereviews.) i cannot overemphasize how frustrated i am—still, yes, i know, about a children's cartoon—about how that movie treated its characters, even ones (the tarrons! douxie! steve!) i don't normally have any investment in.
...but what if that changed? what if we took what used to be the gdt hallmark—sympathy for monsters, without excuse—and committed to the goddamn bit? jim reached out to bular back in trollhunters. yes, what you're doing is wrong; you're hurting people i mean to protect; but i understand you're hurting too, and why, and how we might not be so different. you don't have to do this.
then barb sends merlin to treeby deeby, and bellroc and skrael fucking kiss.
(and then go about actually protecting/repairing the balance of the world or whatever, but i know what i'm about.)
postscript. i admit i pick a lot on merlin. don't get it twisted: i think my own evil wizard blorbos were also complete dumbasses here. but i think part of the reason i am so invested in merlin experiencing a goddamn consequence is pretty closely related to the original reason i was so drawn to gdt's stuff in the first place, namely: decoupling "good" and "evil" from "normal" and "monster," respectively. i don't think this is too much to expect of a kids show, especially one for toa's age group. trollhunters does a great job of doing this—of allowing nuance, of showing how it's possible to think outside the frameworks you know, while still remaining accessible to children—and 3below kind of? tries to keep it up. i think. but wizards...doesn't. even for all it does (inadvertently or otherwise) end up pointing out how merlin and arthur, founts of the same authority, massively screwed up. i've also had many people point out that wizards was pretty much set up to fail: executive meddling, rushed production, etc. etc. which i do sympathize with.
but it's still. tremendously bitter. to see six seasons' worth of such a unique message get discarded so easily. especially when this was done with such breathtakingly little love for the material.

which love and deepspace character i think asgzc would pick:
(a super niche post that i’m aware absolutely no one else will get)
angeal: probably zayne, the most “normal” of the options, or possibly xavier, i think he would be able to appreciate just how like chill(?) xavier is with everything, but i think he’s ultimately one of those people that actually just really wants caleb to become a love interest… (… i am also one of those people… yes i am depressed about chapter 4)
genesis: rafayel. i think he would absolutely adore rafayel or absolutely despise rafayel, no in between. i also think he would find some charm in zayne, possibly because zayne would almost remind him of angeal, the more calm/rational/malewife-like one than the others, and is kind of like a good offset to his personality (he also probably just thinks zayne’s hot tbh)
sephiroth: i think he might admire how cute xavier is, and i think he would find rafayel reminiscent of genesis (seph: *teasing gen* “hey, rafayel kinda reminds me of a certain ginger soldier i know” gen: *dramatic offended scoff* “i am nothing like that dramatic, annoying douchebag!”)
zack: i think rafayel would be the only one that at least is slightly energetic enough to catch zack’s attention, but on the other hand i think rafayel would also remind zack a little bit too much of genesis, meaning he would probably find rafayel mildly insufferable. but i also think he would adore xavier, although xavier might be a little too sleepy for him
cloud: xavier because he probably appreciates how calm he is, and the fact that xavier is like effortlessly strong and cool, plus super sweet, and i just feel like cloud and xavier would mesh very well, not to mention that zayne and rafayel probably intimidate the hell out of poor cloud…

Similarities between Reactive types
Tumblr media
4 and 6
Envy, Inadequacy. "The grass is always greener on the other side. That other person is always more competent and capable than me. That other person deserves attention more than me, fuck fuck fuck." 6s are the original Envy type, NOT 4. Read one of my many posts about this.
Conscious fear of abandonment.
Fear of not being good enough, fear of not being chosen as the first option (ties into envy and inadequacy). Both 4 and 6 disintegrate into Image types who are competitive for attention, over-comparing themselves to others, and concerned with being good enough to impress others (4 -> 2 and 6 -> 3).
Needing to be understood, feeling persecuted because everyone misunderstands their inner world of thoughts and feelings, and feeling fragile and anxious and betrayed when they share themselves but are not understood by others. This is true for 8s as well, but the interpersonal neediness is not as conscious with 8s. 4s and 6s are more conscious of their interpersonal neediness than 8s, because they both disintegrate into image types whilst 8 is disintegrating into a head type.
Seeking to understand other people's secret identities and motivations, and reveal these secret identities and motivations to them, as a way of deepening your connection.
Mutual neighbors of 5: will both have 5-ish traits. Namely: sense of observing rather than being truly involved, ability to be socially calculated, sense of helplessness and social isolation, social introversion, and social anxiety are common. This is more relevant for 4w5s and 6w5s than 4w3s and 6w7s.
----
4 and 8
Hyper-Individualism, expressed in dramatic emotional displays (the mutual 2 line has lots to do with this).
Feeling like you need to make your unique mark -- 8s do it to express anger / control and take over rooms when they feel the drive. It is instinct-based. 4s do it to get their image recognized and validated, to get an audience for a strong idealistic vision they have invested in producing and sharing. This all ties in to the mutual 2 line.
Seeking Catharsis.
Trying to "help" people who they see as repressed to express themselves more. Sometimes it's really help. Sometimes not.
Sense of being "thrown out of heaven" and rejected by God. 8s feel they are in a war with God, 4s feel that they are trying to impress God through their image and earn their way back into heaven. Read Enneagram of Holy Ideas for this one. It's eerily similar.
Mutual line to 2: will both have 2-ish traits. Namely: Emotions > Logic, wanting an audience to sit on the throne before and entertain, dramatic over-expressiveness of the emotions with an unconscious motive to seduce. This is present regardless of the 4 or 8's wings.
----
6 and 8
Truth-seeking, particularly regarding political events and views of external reality. Both types are likely to have unconventional political views, be activists, be part of niche ideological tribes, loudly and vocally seek to destroy the power / authority and make their anti-authority opinions heard.
"Wake up sheeple!"
Savior / hero complex. Both aspire to be heroes of the weak. Both will probably love guns or military in some way.
Sense of their own Incompetency. These types both disintegrate into Competency types (6 -> 3 and 8 -> 5) as they are overdosing on something the core type lacks -- a sense of valuing and nurturing its own Competency.
Seeking Competent people to enter into their lives so that they can outsource their Competency concerns to these people; again, this comes from 6 and 8 devaluing their own Competency.
Overt anger and reactivity towards people who don't act the way they want them to be acting.
Mutual neighbors of 7: will both have 7-ish traits. Namely: They are chaotic and expansive thinkers, fixated on freedom and the right to adventure, hard to follow in their expressions of thought, both lean towards being socially extroverted, the stuff about having very unconventional views about reality can be chalked up to the 7 wing. This is more relevant for 6w7s and 8w7s than 6w5s and 8w9s.
----
All Reactives
Contrarianism, going against the norm to challenge the norm. If authority or "the mainstream" tells me to do it, I might just find a reason to do the opposite!
"Rebel without a cause."
...seeking to become rebels with a cause, so getting involved with a bunch of retarded causes, and occasionally getting involved with revolutionary causes that are good and not retarded.
Activism
Adaptability to circumstance, in their triad of focus (mental, interpersonal, or physical). That's part of what "reactive" means.
Argumentativeness

I'd really love the sci fi reading list, if it's not too difficult! Thank you for your explanation
Yes! Okay, requisite this is Not Authoritative Or Comprehensive claim, I'm a dork with a Russian degree, but here we go:
(I tried to organize this chronologically because if I did it thematically we would be here all day. Also, I still have more books, but they get increasingly niche. This is a Greatest Hits playlist, and if you look these people up, you will find their contemporaries)
(Long list below the Read More)
Jules Verne — 80,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth. Excellent continuations of that exploration/'ostracized' genius figure, so popular in the previous century. French, so English translations. Kinda marks the transition point between 19th c. pure spec exploration and what we would call sci-fi. BUT BEFORE HIM...
Mary Shelley — Frankenstein is probably the first sci-fi novel as we know it. BUT BEFORE HER...
Margaret Cavendish — Okay, the 'first sci-fi novel' is hard to define for obvious reasons, but The Blazing World has as good a claim as any. Published in the 17th c., so it really traverses the genres, but includes a utopian kingdom accessible via the North Pole. Her husband was so impressed that he composed a sonnet for her, which serves as the epigraph for the novel; it's a wild read in the same way Robinson Crusoe and other early novels are, and I'm mostly including it here because it's so, so wild to read in 2023.
John W. Campbell — That dude. The hero's journey guy. His short story Who Goes There? Has been adapted a million times into a little movie called The Thing. Unfortunately got really into race science, so Isaac Asimov told him to fuck off. Edited the magazine Astounding Science Fiction, which in 1939 published Black Destroyer by Alfred Van Vogt, usually cited as the beginning of Golden Age sci-fi.
H. G. Wells — Big critic of class divisions in Victorian English society, coined the term 'time machine' as we think of it in his novel...The Time Machine. A lot of what we consider 'classic' time travel tropes were, if not invented here, had their seeds planted here. Also famous for War of the Worlds, leading to a MINOR disturbance when Orson Welles did a dramatic radio reading.
Edgar Rice Burroughs — the man, the myth, the legend. If I could persuade you to read one white English sci-fi author with rather dubious politics, it would be him, if only because of how influential he was. Mostly famous for Tarzan, but he also wrote a whole series about Hollow Earth that crosses over with Tarzan at some point (Pellucidar), as well as the series Barsoom (A Princess of Mars and its sequels), and Amtor (Guy named Carson Napier gets transported to Venus, which was a watery hellscape, as was popularly theorized for a while).
They're basically pulp comics before pulp comics, published in magazines, extremely lurid and dramatic, and he did write his own crossovers. These were what the first modern superhero comics writers often grew up reading and what inspired them—John Carter's cultural cachet was borrowed by Superman until it became his cultural cachet.
They're very fun, but also supremely products of their time, and extremely fond of the British Empire.
Judith Merrill — prolific writer and editor, who also wrote one of my personal favorite reactions to the atomic bomb in Shadow on the Hearth.
Gabriel García Márquez — we're gonna take half a sidestep into magical realism here (which is, to define quickly, a genre incorporating the fantastic into otherwise realistic narratives, often formed and associated with decolonial and post colonial Latin American fiction, but not always. It's a fuzzy genre). He wrote in Spanish, but I read him in English. One Hundred Years of Solitude is probably one of the great novels ever written. My mother is also telling me to rec Love in the Time of Cholera and she wrote about the man, so listen to her.
Jorge Amado — the sixties were the big magical realism heyday. Amado was Brazilian and his Dona Flor and her Two Husbands is a book my Spanish high school teacher made me swear to read some day.
Andre Alice Norton — Deserves a spot for being one of the most prolific sci-fi authors of all time during a time when sci-fi was INCREDIBLY inhospitable to women. Over 300 books!
Robert Heinlein — This man is the poster child for "male author who writes groundbreaking sci-fi novels but cannot be normal about women with a gun to his head". The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is excellent and incredibly important for how comprehensive the creation of Luna and its workers was, even if it is very sixties free love. Also wrote Starship Troopers, the novel.
Edward Smith — you haven't seen drama until you read what they said when Lensman (first book is Triplanetary) lost to Foundation for the Hugo in the sixties.
Larry Niven — Fleet of Worlds! Ringworld won a whole host of awards and deservedly so in 1970. Fair warning, his stuff decidedly falls under "hard" sci-fi (lots and lots of discussion for plausible alien artifacts), though it is awesome just in terms of how he can communicate scale. If you see a big ring-like structure in space, you can thank this guy, basically (the term ringworld comes from here). Also did a bunch of co-writing. I haven't read his other stuff, but CoDominium is on my list (he co-wrote it. First book is The Mote in God's Eye). If you liked the TV show The Expanse when it did the alien stuff and the later books it never got to adapt, you'll love this guy.
Samuel R. Delaney — Dhalgren is a book I am forbidding you to research before reading. Go in prepared. You have been warned. You will either love this book or set it on fire.
Stanislaw Lem — Solaris. I started this novel last week after watching the Tarkovsky film and. It's doing something to my brain, that's for sure. It's a book where I have to read every sentence twice. If you read it, find a good translation if you don't speak Polish. The author famously is very mad at critics who use Freudian analysis for it, so tread carefully (it's about the limits of rationality and our ability to understand, so. Fair).
Joanna Russ — The Female Man is a seminal work of feminist sci-fi. It's—fascinating, to be honest. Discusses socially enforced dependence of women on men and the creation of a different gender, a "female man", when the protagonist chooses to reject it and thus her socially enforced gender. I wouldn't call it a transgender manifesto (written in 1975, features insufficiently masculine men undergoing sex change surgery, so...yeah) but it definitely awoke something in my brain when I was 16 lol. I would LOVE to see it revisited in literary criticism from a modern perspective, especially from trans people.
C.J. Cherryh — If we talked about female sci-fi authors from the 1950s-70s writing under gender ambiguous aliases, we would be here all day, so I'm picking the one whose books I got for cheap at a book sale. Her Foreigner series has such a good premise with descendants of a lost Earth ship and interstellar court drama, and it's SO fun.
Poul Anderson — the name is not a typo, do not look up Paul Anderson, you will never find him. I actually have a copy of Three Swords and Three Lions currently collecting dust on my shelf and judging me right now as I wait to read it. Tau Zero is one of the greatest things I've ever read. The time dilation stuff gets kinda dense at times, but he incorporates some interest in his Swedish history and folk tales into it, and his explanation of travel at the speed of light and incorporating that into his discussion of nationalism is incredible. The ending where they survived [REDACTED] and landed on what may have been [REDACTED] has been bouncing around my brain for a bit now.
Laura Esquivel — Like Water for Chocolate is from the magical realism reading list.
Salman Rushdie — Midnight's Children is one of those bucket list books, for better or worse. Recontextualized Indian independence from the British and the Partition through framing of a husband telling the story to his wife, as he actively tells the story to her. Really uses the fantastical versus the real w/history versus truth so well.
Nancy Farmer — The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, for the kids lying about their age on Tumblr dot hell. Three kids try to escape a kidnapping after sneaking out—in 23rd century Zimbabwe. With the help of three mutant detectives. It rules.
Ben Okri — Okay, I have not read his stuff yet, but it is on my list. Other people here have discussed his influence on them in post colonial sci-fi. His big one is The Famished Road, first in a trilogy, and renowned for its discussion of the spiritual and realist world coexisting in African animist spiritual life.
Nnedi Okorafor — I have read one of her short stories, Remote Control, and currently have an book list with her other stuff on it. Other people I know vouched for her work. She specifically writes Africanfuturism and Africanjujuism centered around her Nigerian background, and follows on from the likes of Okri and Octavia Butler. I'd also add if you're a Stephen King fan when he's in Dark Tower mode, she's probably gonna have things that appeal to you.
Mentions that are absolutely influential but don't need explaining on this website: Franz Kafka, Ursula K Le Guin, Douglas Adams, N. K. Jemisin, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert, Alduous Huxley, Philip K. Dick, Orson Scott Card, Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, Octavia Butler, Neil Gaiman, Toni Morrison.
(to be clear: you SHOULD read them, but you probably know who most of them are and/or why they're big deals. Most of them are also incredibly prolific, and explaining their bodies of work are other posts. Trying to make a list about other folks)
For more on Afrofuturism,(not to be confused with Africanfuturism), I recommend the shit out of Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci-Fi and Fantasy Culture, full of short stories and guides to art and music. I, alas, lack similarly useful authoritative guides to other genres, but I have read that one, so wanna toss it out there. There's so much.

i just wanted to send some positive words your way and let you know that i absolutely adore the way you write both dark and daisuke. it's clear you put a lot of thought and love into both of them, and your posts have always brought a smile to my face. i'll never forget the shock i felt when your blog popped up in my recommended and, i was on call with my boyfriend at the time, he hears me go 'NO WAY, ARE YOU SERIOUS?' before i slapped the follow button LOL d.n.angel holds a special part of my early teenage years and your blog brings the warmth and nostalgia i felt all those years ago. i almost feel like that 14 year old again, giddy over a silly anime and kicking my feet with excitement every time i see your posts c: thank you for being such a joyous presence on my dash
Tumblr media
YOOOO YOU FOUND ME FROM TUMBLR RECCS???? that's so funny... i always thought that thing was useless but i've been proven so wrong LMAO. I'M REAL THOUGH. I'M SO REAL!!! *DOES A JIG* I'M SO GLAD MY BLOG CAN MAKE YOU FEEL THAT WAY TOO 😭🤧PLEASE IT MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME. dnangel is such a weird series because it feels like everyone's at least -SEEN- or heard of it at least once but then it's still weirdly niche?? like there's not really anything for it esp anymore and nobody talks about it esp now that it's finally finished (manga-wise) after 30 some years but it's still like. most popular/easily recognized niche series ik off the top of my head JJGJKFKJ TYSM FOR UR COMPLIMENTS OVER MY PORTRAYAL TOO!!!
making this blog was such a good exercise in my own growth because going back to it sugisaki had such BANGER themes that i didn't even notice or totally grasp at first when i myself was in middleschool, so i feel like i'm lowkey compensating and paying proper attention to everybody now that i have. well. better critical thinking skills and media literacy DFKJKJGKJKJ even going back i was kind of surprised how it dealt with such dark topics like grief and death and the consequences of Playing God or sins and cycles when like.......... it's also a silly little dramatic rom-com about middleschoolers and immortals but it still never leaves you feeling hopeless or lonely, which as also sugisaki's intention with the series!! it's so nice!! i really wanted to be able to emulate the overall messages of her characters and loving art esp since it ends up so meta for us writers. i'm just happy to write!! doesn't have to be perfect or even exact, since i do take a tiny bit of creative/hc liberty with my own inspos and portrayals for dai n dark! but i'm always having sm fun interacting with everybody, AND I RLLY APPRECIATE U TOO!!! 🙇🙇
i'll probably be around for a looooong time bc dai n dark r just as much treasured and influential for me (i was also one of those 14 yr olds, i have embarrassing dnangel merch on top of piles of manga laying around, im certifIED REAL FAN /J) but it makes me so happy my posts bring u joy. im glad bc i know i can post/talk ooc a lot before i get the time to actually properly sit down and Write but that's just how it is for a lot of us kjgkjgfb anyways, thank u again!! things like this rlly help my confidence since actually at the start i had no idea if i could do like... a protagonist (daisuke)/'popular' (to me. dark/dnangel is popular and legendary and overwhelming in the eyes of the tumblr populace to Me-) chara any justice, but im put at ease any time i get such warm feedback like this!!! 💐💐💐FOR YOU! u get even more flowers this time straight from me!!! go buy urself a treat for being so nice!!!

Rules: Go to your published works on AO3 and list the first fic you ever published there, the last fic you published, any fic that you wrote for a fandom/ship only once, your favourite fic you wrote in the fandom/ship that has the most works, the fic you wish more people read, the fic you agonized over the most, the fic that sprang fully formed from your mind without any effort, and a work you are proud of—for whatever reason. <3
First fic: A Little Dramatic - a Hot Fuzz fic which I stopped writing after one chapter. Accidentally abandoning WIPs is a running theme for me.
Last fic: Are You There, God? It's Me, Aziraphale - my Good Omens Season 2 Fix-It fic. I have a part-written companion fic from Crowley's perspective languishing in my google docs. Will I finish it? Who knows (probably not).
Only once: Honestly, most of them. I only have 11 fics published on AO3 and 6 of them are a one-time-only fandom post. It's not that I go through hyperfixations/fandoms quickly; it's more that I can seeminly only write if I'm properly ~inspired~. If I can't write the thing in one or two sittings, it's not getting finished. Don't blame it on the good times, blame it on the boogie ADHD.
Favorite fic from the fandom I've written in most: Urgh. OK. So, I have 3 Stardew Valley fics and, I'm not going to lie to you all, they fucking suck. That's not even me being performatively humble - they are Not Good. So, I'm not really proud of any of them. I'm keeping them up because I don't really like deleting things, and I haven't orphaned them because I believe in standing by my mistakes. But yahh boo we hate you.
Fic I wish more people read: check my spelling, wring my neck - my Alone Rangers fic. The potential readerbase for this is incredibly niche to the point that I am genuinely surprised it has just over 100 hits - I honestly believed it was going to tap out at 20. I mainly wrote it for my friends on discord but I think it's quite good and I'm rather proud of a couple of the jokes in it.
Fic I agonized over: you pulled me into focus - as yet unfinished but NOT ABANDONED Ghosts Patcap AU WIP. I continue to agonise over it because it is unfinished and I want it to be finished. I have the final three (ish?) chapters planned out and part-written. The engine is revving but the handbrake is on. Someone please help me.
Fic that sprang fully formed: 'cause you're in my brain, taking up space - Viago/Anton WWDITS fic. The only not-one-shot that I've ever finished. Sure, it's only 2 chapters but that's not the point. The point is that it whizzed out of my brain over 4 days with very little straining involved.
Work(s) I'm proud of: Are You There, God? It's Me, Aziraphale - I'm more proud of this than anything else. I'm not sure why. I just think it reads well. I think I did an alright job in trying to emulate the narrative style of Good Omens.
I'm going to tag @ghosts-of-love @oatmilktruther @bucketsofodo13 and @edandstede <3

Owlka's Tips for Writing
(I'm being kind of tongue-in-cheek here. But still, if you'd like to know some of my actual thought processes, I am happy to provide! Just pop into my askbox.)
Start writing at such a young age that you were never told your writing was bad. This way, when you get older, your writing is actually passable, and you can potentially use your old bad writing for a hilarious dramatic readings series.
Have many projects going at one time, so that you can procrastinate on one by working on the other.
Create more than 400 characters, but only use about 50 of them.
View/experience/read about lots of other media, from all over the place, from decades-old video games to violent Flash series. Eventually, you either 1. will find a character that reminds you of one of your own, or 2. get inspiration for a character from a character in that other media. (But watch out! Both of these methods tend to lead to brainrot for your own characters. Not recommended unless you have a lot of time on your hands to spend thinking about your newfound blorbo.)
Set hypothetical release dates for your stuff, in case you get fans. This creates accountability, so when the time comes, you're guilted into finishing something for your fans that don't exist yet. (This is actually the only reason why The Acorn Detective Agency book 1 is finished.)
Have someone who is way more interested in logical worldbuilding than you are fix your plot holes for you. (Thanks, roomie!)
Make art for your stuff too, for double the creative agony.
Also, if you're going to make art, change your artstyle about three times a month to make sure you never get art that looks the way you want it to.
Analyze your work like a high school student in a language class. This way, you can find some awesome symbolism that you didn't even intend on! (I have done this enough to write an actual essay on it.)
Post your work only on platforms that care about tropes, especially tropes you don't have in your work. This way, you fill a niche! And what a niche it is...
And probably more I can't think of right now! Might make a part 2 if I get some more.

Hello, I just wanted to tell you that your work had inspired me to make my own animatics (the first "proper" one is almost ready!), and your art style was the primary influence for my storyboarding. I still remember the first time I watched one of the animatics of yours, and was absolutely blown away by it. Fast forward a year, and I am making my own fan art for another niche, indie game. So, I wanted to thank you personally, and I hope I can share what I did with that inspiration!
I still recall when I first started really imagining animation as it relates to characters in a setting and plot. The animatic of yours is like a knitted blanket, all of the characters go together despite the colour scheme being very different. I was memerized by the coordination - it was like a dance, almost!
So, I started wondering about other games I played, and I thought "Maybe I can try something like that too". It wasn't easy, I suck at art, but I learnt quite a lot. For example, how to blend two different scenes with different rooms in a fluid manner. Or how to protray a character with only a few sketches, as I cannot make every frame colourful.
I deeply recall going back to the"Road Less Taken" video, as well as so many others, and slowing down the speed to 0.5, so I could see every single frame slowly, and trying to figure out how to add movements that won't be too "noisy". In that time, I tried experimenting with art styles, and sort of mixed up a lot of brushes together.
One particular moment was when I tried to make a "dramatic" moment in my badly drawn sketch. I remember seeing that you would take a black and white frame, and then, the next frame would be the same thing but in colour. I thought it was so cool! So, I tried it.
It didn't work out as I hoped (my colouring was messy and poor). The technique I am currently using is by using a black and white sketch, and then the same frame with 3 colours. But I learnt that I could adjust the layers with filters, until the lightening had enough contrast. This way, it would seem "dramatic".
Sorry, that was super long of an ask. My first proper animatic won't be good, but that is another learning experience! If I have the courage, I may post it on Tumblr. Honestly, I really am glad I stumbled upon your videos, else I would not have done all of that drawing and creativity.
So, thank you for everything!
I came across this message first thing in the morning and it's made me have so many different feelings.. before I say anything further, I'd like to tell you that I feel this message is wonderful! I'm glad to have you had stumbled upon my videos, too.
Ah, my Road Less Taken fanvideo.. and my other videos too. Being reminded of it really hurts me because I loved everything I put into it, I put in a lot of passion, I put in a lot of love, I bought the artbook, played the game it was based on and went through to do a full analysis, went back and forth through the plot, I just couldn't bear upholding it though, I just couldn't. I'm sad it turned out to be the way it is now since I was really sure I did a great job with it with the skills I had, and I love what I did with it, but I don't regret having it taken down. It took me some time to muster the courage to do it, and I feel lucky that people were very accepting about it too. ^^ It existed and it was able to give a lot of people fun as it did for me, and I'm very happy that was the case. I know that work of mine was really loved, and I'm glad I could create something that could do something like that. I hope I can do that again and I'd probably have a chance to, since I have a life ahead of me.
Enough about me and let's talk about you and your message! Aaaah wow, this is really incredible! Have you seen my channel though? My early videos (and I may still would draw that way) aren't so colorful and proper you know! A lot of them are consisted of sketches of what I want to see in that certain segment. It's very interesting and exciting to hear from your perspective, because I hadn't considered my movies to be so "proper" enough either!! That's why, I can say for a fact, that "Oh you'll do well and do a wonderful job" with 100% sincerity. You came to the right person. I mean look at me! I posted videos like that all the time and just because I thought it'd be fun! If you went to some other talented artist who has these bizarre techniques and astounding professionalism who could create full-fledged CLEAN animations it may not sound so convincing. But i'm someone who starts from scratches and lines and posts those without shame. Drawing colored movies was a huge challenge in my part as well and it took me awhile to feel I'll be skilled enough to do it- perhaps you're already getting a huge head-start compared to how I started out because moving up that one step for me took years to do.
You can do it!! You can!
If there's something I learned from posting my drawings and works out here, it's that you just do what you wanna do. Not everyone will notice you, and your works may not be blown up out there as you wish it to be, yeah, but there's always going to be someone that comes along and appreciates it, which is a miracle on its own. For me, one of those people is you. You'll have someone who comes up to you and does the same thing for you, too if you keep sticking out there. Until then, just continue doing what you love and have fun, without having recognition being your only motive. I made my works for myself (to share, of course, but there were things I was so passionate about I felt I HAD to put this out there and let everyone notice how GOOD and FITTING it is) and although having thousands of people love my works, and tens of hundreds of thousands watch 'em together with me was wonderful.. it all feels like a dream now, the number doesn't matter as much for me. If numbers mattered, I'd have given up a long time ago because there's always people who are so much better than you. However, there's something that only you can do and think of.
See? You're already telling me about your unique style and is thinking of what you could do to make it more effective. That approach you're using is something that I'm unfamiliar of doing. Even if we had the same ideas, I wouldn't be able to create the same things you do and that's what makes yours special! Good luck with that, never did I think what I drew would be able to inspire you to create your own, I should work harder myself to make sure I don't get beaten by you so fast XD, You see, I'm a slow improver. I have artist friends who've gone places and make incredible art. But I can still be one too, as long as I keep drawing. I hope you do that too, as well as keep having fun in the way. And please remember about me if you become famous one day, okay? 'v')9
"The animatic of yours is like a knitted blanket, all of the characters go together despite the colour scheme being very different. I was memerized by the coordination - it was like a dance, almost!"< Ah, I really liked this part of your ask, too. The coordination part is something I really tried hard on when I make an animatic! I sit down and listen to music one day and then something hits me. 'Huh? Isn't this that? And that part works with that and can't this be used to convey this?' Very vague expressions but that's actually how it works in my head. The inspirations come very fast, and when that happens, I sit down and write up a memo to see if the whole song really fits along with the stories I know. And when I'm convinced that it works, I start weaving the two different stories together, the lyrics and the story of the material I wish to make a video out of. That process really makes my heart race because yes, like how you've described it, it feels like a dance, or a knit. Like 90% of the animatics I've made happen like this, so I have no idea when I'll get another inspiration. Till then, I just keep having fun with the fandoms I'm in! Having a good understanding of the source material helps. If you know it well, then everything folds together as one. The song and the story does it for you, and you just follow through its flow.
"slowing down the speed to 0.5, so I could see every single frame slowly, and trying to figure out how to add movements that won't be too "noisy". <this part ;v;...hnngh I have no words.. goodness I had NO idea someone would look at my videos with such intense care.. I don't consider my videos to have the most..how do you put it, creative effects out there, a lot of the effects I put in are something that's built in in the base program or something really simple! You'll be able to learn it in a jiffy no problem. I really look up to vids that have these wacky, shiny and fast-paced effects myself.. One thing I think I could do a pretty good job on, on the other hand, would be the pacing! And that has a lot to relate with the songs you're using. Where the instruments come in, the beat, parts where the vocal stresses, I use the songs I really like, so it makes me think oh, a panel could be added there, and there! and let's make this one drawing show up longer than the others! All that. If you understand the materials you're using (the song, the story, your art) you'll be able to coordinate them well within the limits of your abilities. As I said earlier, that's going to be something only you could do, and what's unique. They say creativity isn't about making entirely new stuff, you know! It's more about putting two different things together in a way no one else has. So movies and fanarts are a great way to show yours :)
I've had others who inspired me to create a video. I've seen lots of fanvids and there were amazing ones, (the fact I was in the kagepro fandom when it was still releasing new songs explains a lot, doesn't it? That surely was a huge inspiration) but I think what's given me the final push to start was seeing my artist friend make a short 6 second one on her tumblr a few years ago. There it hit me that I might be able to do it too, so I asked them what program they were using and made mine right away.
I still have it in fact, it's this video, and I made this one too shortly after. And then I realized that although it wouldn't be perfect, making a video itself isn't something too much of a big deal. You make one and that's it! Because I enjoyed it,(I loved the idea of seeing my own drawings move) I made more.. and I won't be so afraid to, either, because I could always go back to making those simple ones if I wished. Make colored and detailed ones if I wish to push myself further. I'm happy I was able to inspire you to make yours. I hope your experience making stuff would be as enjoyable and exciting as mine!
I'll be happy if you can show me your first video, too!// Whether if you do, or if you don't, I will cheer for you~ Thank you so much for telling me all this. I'm honored to know I was able to give you such a positive impact, because you never know what influence you're giving to someone unless they tell you.. and this, IS SO TOUCHING. You're doing all these things because you were able to find the good, you had it in you always! I'm glad I played a part somewhere on the road. 'v')9
Good luck with your videos~ I'll.. keep making mine in the future too! ;v; GOD I found a song for persona but I gotta finish P3R to get a better understanding for this plot once again, I'm going to do an even better job than I ever did, in the long run. So you too, I know you'll keep improving, so take your time and have fun on the way!

19 Questions Meme
Supposed to be 20 questions, but one seems to have vanished along the way. Thank you to @spiced-wine-fic for tagging me.
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 120, though some of those are moodboards instead of fic.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 492,336 words. I'm not prolific.
3. What fandoms do you write for? Star Wars, in the Kanan comics niche of the Rebels subfandom but I also work in rather a lot of Prequels-related material and I love the JFO/Survivor era. I also wrote a lot in the Tolkien fandom, Silmarillion side, but I'm only dipping my toes into the fandom at the moment and I'm not sure I'll return in depth.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
I am not the world's biggest fan of sorting by kudos; kudos doesn't mean best, it simply means popular. And often in the case of AO3, it means "in a popular fandom" so it skews results. There are plenty of fantastic fics that don't have a lot of kudos. And just because they're in the top-5 doesn't mean the author thinks they're their best works.
I'll step off my soapbox now. In order from most to least: To Remake the Universe (MCU), In Deep or In Darkness (MCU-Young Wizards crossover), Never Discussed But Silently Acknowledged (Star Wars), An Unexpected Welcome (Tolkien), Evolving Roles (Star Wars).
5. Do you respond to comments? Always. On one level, it's simply polite to say "thank you" to compliments. On an entirely different level, commenting on fics was how I found fandom friends, especially in my early years in fandom.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? The one where I killed (BBC) Merlin.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? *shrugs* I mostly write happy endings. Readers' choice of which is the happiest.
8. Do you get hate on fics? A few times. I'm generally able to laugh about it now. There are a couple of hate comments I find truly hilarious.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Nope.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Love 'em. I write a lot of Star Wars-Tolkien crossovers. I have no idea which one people would think is the most out there.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes. The two I know of are on AO3 but there have been a handful of others over the years that people asked if they could translate and I have no idea if they ever were, where they were posted, or (at this end of time) even what stories they were.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? A fic, no, but for a bit, I co-wrote a short-lived series.
13. What’s your all time favorite ship? Elrond/Celebrían for Tolkien. For Star Wars, Han/Leia and Padme/Anakin. Favorite noncanon Star Wars is Owen/Beru/Obi-Wan.
14. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? ...So I posted a WIP a couple of weeks ago. It is the only WIP I've posted because my policy is to only post completed fics. I'd hoped that I'd get some encouragement to write more but I'm honestly not sure anyone realized it was a WIP because I didn't get encouragement to continue or a single "looking forward to more!" type of comment. I lost the little bit of enthusiasm I had because I'd been stalled on the fic for a while (I began writing it in fall 2020!) and it really feels like I could walk away from it and no one would care.
15. What are your writing strengths? I am sadly the type of writer who has a hard time seeing her strengths.
16. What are your writing weaknesses? Description is my go-too weakness. You can probably add writing romance to this.
17. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I prefer not to except for dramatic effect. I'm, for better or worse, monolingual. And I refuse to learn conlangs just to read a fic. If there's too much dialogue in a conlang, I'll hit the back button.
18. First fandom you wrote for? Mutant X.
19. Favourite fic you’ve written? I don't have an answer for that. Or at least a permanent one; there's a handful of fics that rotate through that position depending on mood, time of day, opinion toward the fandom, etc.

tiny appreciation post/insane rambling about Tom Bronson
re-re-re-reading JSA 2007. Tom Bronson is a good character, fight me. Everyday I claw at the air in rage for the many characters introduced into the JSA and then never given any more detail. There's just too many people in the '07 JSA, man. Too Many. Tom is unfortunately one of those comic characters that has a super niche fanbase and nothing to follow up on outside of JSA.
so, in light of me inserting him into the TAXONOMY!verse and putting the guy smack dab into the Battle for the Cowl and Bette Kane's radar - I'm just gonna gush a little bit about his first appearance. (and include some headcanons for the au).
Tumblr media
Putting aside my favorite Old Man Trio, can I just say that I like how pretty the art makes Tom look? The first time I read this comic, I got a very James Dean/1950's bad boy vibe from Tom. I'd like to think it was a little bit intentional in order to parallel Ted Grant and his eternal Old Americanism. At least it's something I'll keep in mind.
Getting into the main post though, throughout his first appearance and the later fight with Vandal Savage, its made clear that Tom is surprisingly knowledgable about superheroes and the surrounding goings-on of them. He knows who Wildcat is (though obviously Ted is canonically an old hero, he has to be somewhat well-known) and he instantly recognizes Vandal Savage.
Tumblr media
(sidenote: Ted looks like a stiff Barbie doll being thrown into the kitchen there)
I take the fact that he recognizes and correctly identifies heroes/villains as a point towards my "Tom is an observant and analytical person" hc.
Earlier on in issue #3, we see that Tom gets right to heart of things when talking with Ted and that he's quick to reach (somewhat right) conclusions.

Despite this, he doesn't really show it anymore as he quickly drifts into a side character spot as the comic run goes in. I choose to believe that Tom doesn't voice his thoughts to the JSA bc he doesn't know them well and he prefers to make snarky remarks in conversation instead of inserting himself into anything personal.
Later on in the series, Tom is reluctant to learn how to box and is shown to dislike fighting in general.

Given the whole estranged-dad-is a famous boxing champ thing, Tom probably doesn't like boxing specifically because of Ted. He says that he doesn't like fighting because of his were-cat form, which it's assumed that he would unconsciously shapeshift into whenever he got into conflict.

(sidenote: why is this the only time I see his inner monologue in comics *sob*)
This distinct trait of disliking combat, at least the personal fist-flying kind, is definitely something I'm including in the au.
Both Tom and Bette are chosen for the au partially because I like them, but also because they have distinct personalities and philosophies that clash with baby Damian Wayne who's coming fresh into the Bat-scene. There will be conflict as Damian will dislike and mostly abhor Tom's personal disdain for fighting. Tom doesn't seem to fight unless necessary and he canonically prefers to rely heavily on his powers to get out of fights. He's only shown getting more violent than usual after Grant Emerson's death, which is pretty reasonable. They were clearly fast and close friends.

Hooo boy Grant should not have died. Especially in Blackest Night, of all things. Despite my personal dislike of it though, I'm still flip-flopping between leaving him dead and then resurrecting him in the au - or just ignoring his canon death altogether. On one hand, I like Grant and I like their friendship so I want him to appear in the au somewhere (alongside Maxine). On the other, his death allows for a just a little bit of dramatic character development/detailing for Tom that lets me explain why he's not with the JSA and instead is in Gotham. Choices.....
Ending the post here with the final smorgasbord of headcanons and blurbs for the au.
he is Mexican-American, but distant from his roots because his mom raised him single and cut-off from her larger family.
he and Bette will enter a relationship. It came to me in a vision and I decided to implement it bc why not. Tom/Bette is bi4bi.
they start dating bc they both strike me as "why not?" type of people, but it develops relatively quickly after Damian enters the picture and they have to co-parent/watch over him as Gotham collapses in slow-motion around them
its shown in the background of some of the panels above that he's into music, specifically guitar and piano
so he will be in a band at some point
bc Alfred does not have the same relationship with Damian in the au, Tom is one who gives him/lets him keep the kitten
(also bc I don't subscribe to the "League of Assassins hate/kill animals" idea - Tom bonds with Damian over a mutual care for animals/cats)
Tom and Damian are a rocky pair, and it takes them longer to get along than Bette does with Damian
He treats Damian as the annoying little brother he never had, and their sense of humor kinda lines up
Tom fully encourages Damian’s sarcasm and rude comebacks
Believe me, there will be a scene where Tom unconsciously purrs in his werecat form and Damian definitely notices
adding to the maybe Grant stays dead part, I'm still iffy on whether to include a one-sided crush on Tom's part that adds to the angst
unlike Grant though, I'm definitely keeping Yolanda Montez alive
Tom and Yolanda have a semi-distant sibling relationship that's a little awkward bc of the age gap and differing experiences with Ted
Might also resurrect Jake Grant, I need the Wildcat family reunion
Ted and Tom still talk, and even though Tom doesn't stick with the JSA, he's still regularly invited to whatever gathering they have
Tom still keeps up with working out/a bit of training - but he focuses on defense and avoidance instead of out-right conflict
Tom got into heroism bc of Ted, but he stuck with it bc of Grant and Maxine
he does not have strict ideals or a drive to save the world, but he likes to focus on the small things and helps where he can
