New items, new stories, new wonders from history are slowly being added to the shop. This week, a batch of everybody’s favorite vintage Corningware casserole dishes - Spice of Life and Floral Bouquet - found their places on the shelf along with a 1960s cooking school cookbook, a vintage seashell specimen collection and these Regency style Irish table mats with 18th century scenes of Dublin. 🇮🇪 They were painted by James Malton (1760-1803) who tragically died at the age of 44 of a brain fever. Now he’s known as one of Ireland’s most celebrated 18th century painters. These scenes in particular are an important study of how Dublin’s buildings evolved from country cottages to an impressive cosmopolitan landscape during the late 1700s. Around here, we love that James’ work is the focus of vintage melamine placemats. ~6/10/2022~ I had a bit of a disjointed day, but actually went quite well. I went for a walk round Wakehurst with H - started to see some glimpses of the autumn colours. We definitely got there at the right time because as we left there was a queue of people coming in, and it was quite quiet while we were there. Had to get back for a work related meeting at midday - it was at a really awkward time hence why my day was disjointed, but it turned out to be worth going to, and it gave H some time to pop home and do a few bits. After the meeting H returned and we went to McDs for lunch. I did have some admin bits to do later that day but it could wait and I was very wiped out and fatigue so mainly rested for the rest of the day. Favorite Costumes (4/?) -

War and Peace 1956

Maria De Matteis was the costume designer for War and Peace. She won an Academy Award for best costumes for this movie. The dresses Audrey Hepburn wore in War and Peace are so Bridgerton before Bridgerton, but I like these dresses a lot more. You can tell a lot of time and care when into designing and making these dresses; the fit, fabrics, and details make them more rich gowns.

Her white gown is made of diamond studded white organza and white satin. The silhouette is very regency with the square neckline, puff sleeves, and empire waistline. The bodice is ruched with sections of white satin piping. Crystals are literally dipping off this dress around the neckline, sleeve edges, and along the bottom of the skirt/train. The back dips into a v with more crystals along the edge. If you wanted to make this dress you’re in luck because it zips up the back! This gown is accessorized with opera length gloves, a crystal hair piece and earrings, finishing the look off with a white lace fan. Audreys hair and makeup is exceptional, but I think it would be almost impossible to make her look bad.

This green velvet dress is gorgeous, I want to make it so much! This dress follows the same regency silhouette formula of a square neckline, puff sleeves, and an empire waistline. For this dress the puffs go into long sleeves with a slightly pointed cuff and covered buttons. There’s piping around the neckline, waistline, and under the sleeve puff. The green velvet of the dress is complemented by the emeralds in her crown. Velvet and emeralds aka a one way ticket straight to my heart 🎟

“Where flowers bloom so does hope” - Lady Bird Johnson . . . Nothing says Spring like seeing trees blooming with Cherry Blossom. It’s honestly one of the most pretty sights to behold at this time of year. But alas like so many of natures little gifts its here one moment and then gone within the blink of an eye. Greenwich Park is always abundant with Cherry Blossom in the Spring. As you can gather from the attire in this photo I have tried to recreate a Bridgerton inspired look complete with a lace parasol, pink chiffon gloves and a yellow floral print empire line dress. For any of you Bridgerton fans Greenwich is home to the Rangers House, one of the shows prime filming locations. I’m grateful to be a woman of the 21st century with all its privileges and rights it has bestowed upon me, especially as a disabled woman. But I do love the romance of the way people used to dress back in bygone times and so I’ve made a promise to myself to incorporate that feminine aesthetic I love into wardrobe. Theres a difference between fashion and style. Fashion is worn by many, but style is worn by you. Own your style whatever it may be. Don’t let others make you feel self-conscious about your look just because it may not conform to the “norm”. Style is a trademark, your signature and the thing that instantly shows a part of personality to the world. So don’t be afraid to show it. . .
