Take the Edge Off | Part 4 | Jealousy

Miguel isn’t happy when he hears that you’ve been spending time with someone other than him.
A/N: do you smell that? I think there’s a plot around here somewhere. Weird… anyway! I’m back with more brain rot—enjoy :)

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9
Today had not been good.
You had been on call all week, and you were finally needed to assist an ongoing mission. You had gone in and found the Scarlett Spider and a few others battling ferociously. It should've been a standard operation, but things quickly went south after the anomaly figured out the purpose of the watches you all wore, and after a nasty fight, he actually managed to steal the gizmo off of Ben Reilly's wrist.
You all stood in horror staring at the place where the portal had just closed after the anomaly jumped into it, taking it to an unknown dimension. Soon after, Ben started glitching, and the rest of you took him back to Earth-928 to get him a new gizmo and explain the situation at hand to Miguel.
Ben had been mortified and ashamed of losing his watch, so you decided to hang back and try to comfort him. It was an awkward experience for you, especially since he went on a long tirade about being a failure and recounting all of his harrowing life experiences. You were secretly relieved when you finally managed to escape back to your room for some peace and quiet.
Your suit had gotten a few nasty tears in the fabric, so you changed into your regular clothes. Assessing the damage, you sighed in defeat when you realized how much time you'd need to put into fixing your suit. Whatever, you had planned on going back home tonight anyway, and you could try to fix it then.
Without any warning, the door to your room slid open, and you weren't surprised to see Miguel's figure looming in the doorway. You sighed again. "Listen, I was fine with it last time, but I really need you to start knocking," you told him in exasperation.
"You weren't at the debriefing," he stated gravely, ignoring your comment. You shrugged indifferently. "I didn't really need to be," you muttered. "There were plenty of people who were there."
"So where were you?" He demanded, placing his hands on his waist as he stared down at you expectantly. You crossed the room to where your carry-on bag was sitting on the floor and tossed your suit in it. "I was with Ben," you said casually, your back still turned to Miguel. "I figured he could use a little companionship after what happened today."
You zipped up your bag and stood up. When you turned around, you were startled to find that Miguel had crossed the room, too, and he was standing directly in front of you. His expression was hardened in anger as he stared down at you with furrowed brows.
"Companionship?" He repeated slowly, his voice laced with aggravation. You looked up at him questioningly before realization dawned on you. You had made a passing reference, a joke really, to Miguel about seeking out Ben for a certain type of "companionship" before. It seemed like the comment must've stuck with him.
"Oh, please," you said with a roll of your eyes. "Don't let your imagination get the better of you." You tried walking past him, but he grabbed you firmly by the arm.
"Where the hell are you going?" He demanded to know. You scoffed indignantly and looked up at his face. Miguel's eyes were boring down at you with a tense glare, his eyebrows drawn in a scowl.
"Wherever the hell I want," you retorted sharply. "I don't need your permission." His grip on your arm tightened. "You're not going anywhere," he growled.
"And why not?" You snapped. "Because you said so?" You pulled your arm out of his grip, but he pushed you back up against the wall. You glared up at him, but your eyes couldn't resist glancing at his lips.
"Did you sleep with him?" He demanded to know in a low voice.
You blinked in surprise. "Ben?" You asked in a confused tone. Miguel didn't reply, he just continued staring down at you with a deep scowl carved on his face. After a silent pause, you couldn't help but laugh derisively at him.
"Oh wow, jealousy looks good on you," you stated after your laughter subsided, your lips still pulled in a smug grin. Miguel's eyebrow tightened slightly as he continued glaring down at you. "You think this is funny?" He questioned with a sharp edge to his voice.
"I'm laughing, aren't I?" You shot back.
"Well, maybe you'll find this funny, too," he said as he crossed his arms resolutely over his chest. "No more missions."
Your smile dropped instantly, and every trace of humor evaporated from your mood. "Excuse me?" You demanded in a baffled tone. "You don't get to run any more missions," Miguel repeated, his voice hard and uncompromising.
"And why the hell not?" You demanded to know. If there was one thing that he could've said to get you riled up, it was kicking you out of the Society.
"Because I said so," he replied arrogantly. "Not laughing now, huh?"
"You're grounding me?" You exclaimed in indignation. Miguel shrugged, still glaring down at you with an irritated expression. "Until you stop acting like a fucking brat," he retorted harshly.
"You're being absolutely ridiculous," you fumed. "All this because I stayed back with Ben?"
"Yes."
"Why does it matter?"
Miguel stepped forward suddenly, and he uncrossed his arms to slam them against the wall on either side of your head, trapping you between the wall and his body. "Because you're mine," he seethed in a low voice.
His response made your heart start beating faster in your chest. In the silence that followed, you couldn't resist staring down at his full lips. "There is not another person in the whole goddamned multiverse who can touch you," he continued in a deep, angry voice.
There was another beat of silence before you raised a hand up to his chest. You trailed it slowly upwards over his muscles as you looked at him through your lashes. "And if there is?" You tested, curious to see his reaction. Envy flashed across his face at the thought of you with someone else. He grabbed your wrist tightly and pulled your hand off of his body as he leaned over you.
"Then no more," he whispered.
You stared up at him for a moment before a sly smile began growing on your lips. His possessiveness shouldn't have surprised you, and you couldn't deny that the jealous anger on his face made you hot.
Without answering him, you pushed up on your toes and kissed him. He took a moment to relax, but when he did, he released his grip on your wrist and wrapped his arms around your body. Your hands slid behind his neck as you pulled yourself closer to his body. His knee pushed between your thighs, causing you to break away from his lips with a moan.
"There was never anyone else," you whispered, sounding slightly out of breath. "It's only been you." Miguel let out a hot breath against your neck before lifting his face to kiss you again, this time, with more eagerness and passion. His hands wandered down your body, over your ass, and gripped your thighs before hoisting you up. Your legs wrapped around his torso while your tongue moved impatiently against his own.
After a moment of him holding you upright like that, Miguel began stepping towards your bed. He dropped down onto the mattress, his hands immediately started moving under your shirt, all the while never breaking away from your kiss. He was eager to get you undressed, and it was only a matter of seconds before your shirt was off.
"Only I get to see you like this," he murmured. He placed kisses on your neck while a hand reached behind your back to remove your bra. You closed your eyes and let out soft, little moans with every eager kiss he pressed to your skin. After a few moments of blind grasping, he unhooked your bra and tossed it aside.
"Only I get to feel you like this," he told you, his hands gripping your breasts as he spoke. You hummed a quiet sigh as he kissed all over your skin. His tongue traced over your sensitive skin, and your fingers grabbed fistfuls of his hair in reaction.
You were growing restless with every touch he made and every word he spoke. You tugged at your pants with one hand, and when Miguel noticed, he was more than willing to help remove them. With you completely undressed beneath him, Miguel's kisses grew sloppy across your body. His suit finally retracted to expose his tanned skin and hard muscles.
"Only me," he murmured, sounding breathless. "¿Me entiendes?"
You let out a soft moan and nodded. You had never desired anyone but him since you first joined the Spider Society, and you doubted that would change anytime soon. He'd had your attention from the first day. In fact, despite his cold and reserved nature, Miguel always unwittingly seemed to draw people to him. You knew you weren't the only one who found him alluring.
With that thought, you placed a hand on his chest and pushed him off of you just enough to grab his attention. "And what about me?" You asked him quietly, staring straight into his lustful eyes.
His eyebrows drew together ever so slightly, and he didn't respond for a second. With a strong shove, you rolled him off of your body and hovered over his instead. Miguel seemed caught off guard as you straddled yourself across his torso, and when you grabbed his throat with your hand, he groaned softly and clenched his jaw.
"Am I the only one who gets to see you this way?" You asked softly, your innocent tone juxtaposing your domineering posture as you pinned him down firmly by his throat. Tracing your free hand across his chest, your fingers brushed over his skin with feather-light touches, making him squirm beneath you.
"Am I the only one who gets to touch you like this?" You questioned, bringing your face down to his and gently running your tongue over his bottom lip. His own tongue darted out and slid against yours, eliciting a smirk from you.
When you pulled back, you looked down at Miguel expectantly. There was lust burning in his eyes, and his hands slid up the sides of your thighs in admiration.
"Only you," he promised breathlessly.
You studied his face for a moment as a crooked grin grew slowly on your face. Your hand released his neck and wandered down to his chest, and you leaned over so that your face hovered over his. "Only me?" You repeated quietly, your nose brushing against his.
Under your hands, you could feel the heavy rise and fall of his chest. His head tilted upwards to try and kiss you, but you were just out of reach. "Only you," he breathed, and one hand came off your thigh and pulled you by the back of your neck down on his lips.
You smiled against his mouth and felt his hand return to your thigh. His fingers dug into your skin as he pulled your body upwards. You didn't realize what he was trying to do until he moved his arms under your thighs and hoisted you up toward his head.
You couldn't resist the giggle that sounded in your chest as he moved you upwards. "So impatient," you told him with a smile, his strong arms pulling you so quickly that you had to catch yourself from toppling over. He ignored you and kept pulling your hips toward his mouth, but you resisted, opting to see how he reacted to your denial.
He tried once more pulling you up to his face, but again, you resisted. His eyes flashed up to yours, and you could see the desire he had to taste you. His breathing was heavy, and he looked annoyed at your refusal.
"What do you say?" You asked sweetly, running a finger across his lips. Miguel's jaw clenched when he realized what you wanted him to say, and he closed his eyes for a moment to fight back his impatience. When he opened them again, you could see how his expression had morphed from frustration to restlessness.
"Please," he said finally, eyes burning impatiently. He didn't sound happy at all about having to beg, but you knew he was growing desperate to taste you. You smirked down at him and whispered, "Much better."
Miguel didn't waste another second before pulling you up to sit on his face. He pulled your hot entrance to his mouth and immediately began devouring you. A loud gasp was forced out of you by the hungry movements of his lips and tongue. You fell forward at the overwhelming sensation, your hands grasping the sheets beneath you with a vise grip.
He made you feel so good. His tongue moved eagerly between your folds before teasing your clit. Every time it brushed over your sensitivity, your thighs spasmed around his head, and you would quietly moan, "Fuck." Based on your cues, Miguel knew exactly where to focus to get the reactions he wanted. He would start building momentum with your clit, and just when your breathing started turning into panting, he would move his tongue further down your cunt to your entrance.
After the third time that he pulled that stunt, you realized he was teasing you. Frustration burned in your chest as he denied you yet again, and you released the sheets in one of your hands to grip his hair tightly. Tugging his hair harshly, you glared down at him and snapped, "If you don't stop fucking teasing, I'm getting off."
His eyes narrowed in displeasure. Before you could try to move yourself off of him, his hands tightened around your thighs, and he actually started sitting up. You gasped sharply in surprise as he lifted you up just enough to roll you over onto your back, your head against the wall so you couldn't crawl away from him as he trapped your thighs in his arms. Such a display of raw strength was both startling and incredibly arousing.
"You're not going anywhere until I fucking say so," he growled. Without another word, his mouth returned to your pussy, and he resumed eating you out like a man starved.
Any sharp retort you could have made was smothered as the pleasure you felt snatched the air from your lungs. Your back arched off the mattress as you gasped desperately, and your legs struggled against his firm grip in reaction to his mouth against you. His tongue moved so well against you, and between your gasps and moans, you could only whisper, "Fuck."
Miguel didn't seem so interested in his little teasing game anymore. His tongue focused entirely on your clit, and he experimented with his pace and strength. When he found the perfect tempo and pressure, the hand that was still gripping his hair would tighten, and a whine would rise up from your throat. Soon enough, your breathing was growing shallow, and every muscle in your body began tensing.
He could tell you were close, and it seemed to make him even more ravenous. His arms wrapped around your thighs to pull them open even further, and his whole body seemed to move in an effort to get you off. You blinked your eyes open to look down at him and saw that his dark eyes were staring up at you hungrily. His body was moving restlessly, and you realized that he was grinding his hips against the bed in an effort to give himself some relief.
That did it for you. Seeing him so turned on by eating you out that he was desperate for his own release tipped you over the edge, and your whole body began shaking as you cried out in pleasure. Miguel moaned against you as your legs tightened against his hands, the bass of his throat adding to the pleasure that coursed through your body.
Unlike last time, Miguel stopped right as it was becoming too much for you. He lifted his head off of you and watched as your body shuddered from your orgasm. As you started coming down from your high, Miguel started crawling slowly up your body while you recovered your trembling breath.
He trailed his wet kisses up your stomach with agonizing slowness. His hands were planted on either side of your body while he moved his mouth up your torso. You whimpered quietly when he placed his mouth over one of your breasts, running his tongue over your sensitive nipple. He continued moving upwards after a moment until his face was buried in the crook of your neck, and he took a deep breath as he inhaled your scent and sighed against your skin.
"Nobody can make you feel as good as I can," he whispered in your ear. Your ability to speak still hadn't fully returned, so you shook your head in agreement with his statement. He placed a kiss on your neck while one of his hands reached down to hold your thigh as he aligned himself to you.
You were holding your breath with eyes closed in anticipation as you felt the tip of his cock push just past the entrance of your pussy but not further. Miguel's forehead rested against yours, and he let out a small grunt as he restrained himself from pushing further into you.
"Look at me," he murmured, his voice deep and hoarse with desire.
With effort, you managed to blink your eyes open to look at him. Miguel's dark eyes were focused on your face with such intensity that despite all the sinful things you had done and were currently doing, you felt your cheeks grow warm, and you blushed. There was a moment of stillness between you with only the sounds of your quiet panting to fill the silence. Miguel was looking down at you with more than just lust. There was a softer element to his gaze, something like admiration or even adoration in his eyes. Whatever it was, it flustered you.
Then, that moment of stillness passed, and he pushed himself into you. A loud groan emerged from your lips as he stretched you out, and you squeezed your eyes shut again. Miguel exhaled a stuttering breath at the feeling of being inside you, and his head fell to rest on your shoulder.
"You always feel so good," he gasped softly as he started rolling his hips into yours. Your hands gripped at his back while you let out quiet moans with every thrust. His hand on your thigh drifted up your body to one of your gripping arms, and he pulled it off his back and laced his fingers with yours. He pinned your hand next to your head as he continued moving steadily inside you.
"Eres mía," he panted in your ear. "Solo mía." You understood the words he was saying, and they made you desperate for more. You are mine. Only mine. Fortunately, you knew exactly how to respond to him. Turning your lips to brush against his ear, you whispered, "Sí, soy tuya." I'm yours.
Hearing you whine like that in his native tongue drove Miguel wild. The grip he had on your hand tightened, and his pace quickened as he drove his cock deeper into you. Your head pressed back against the mattress with closed eyes, and a long, needy moan sounded from your throat.
Miguel's face was resting against your shoulder as he grunted with each drive of his hips into your pussy. His mouth moved restlessly over the skin of your throat, and his breathing was heavy in your ear. You could tell that even with his strong, steady thrusts, he wanted to do more to you. You knew it by the way he would place opened-mouth kisses on your neck and let his teeth barely graze your skin before pulling away with a muffled groan.
You turned your head slightly so that your cheek rested against his. "I know what you want to do," you whispered in his ear. "You don't have to hold back." Miguel's face turned, and his eyes opened to gauge whether or not you were saying what he thought you were. You pressed a kiss to his lips before turning your head away and exposing your neck for him.
Miguel didn't need any more prompting or encouragement from you. His fangs pierced your skin at the base of your neck, making you gasp sharply as his jaw firmly clamped around you. He moaned at the relief of being able to sink his teeth into you, and now that his restless desire to bite you was being satisfied, his thrusts grew faster and stronger. Loud gasps and long whines filled the air since his unrelenting pace made it impossible for you to be quiet. Your nails were digging into his back while your pinned hand squeezed his, and the combination of pleasure and pain left you unable to think straight.
You realized he was growing closer when he started making more noise. His hips were snapping harshly against yours while he was grunting and even moaning against your neck. His interlaced fingers tightened around yours as his body tensed and finally stilled with a groaning sigh of relief.
The stillness lasted for a moment as he remained on top of you with only the sounds of your accelerated breathing between you. When Miguel finally moved, it was to release your neck from his jaw. You were expecting it this time, but the sharp sensation of his fangs pulling out of your skin still made you flinch.
"Painful?" he asked quietly after a moment in a hoarse voice. You took a few breaths before admitting, "A little bit." He raised his head off of your neck, and you saw genuine concern in his eyes. You smiled softly and placed a quick kiss on his lips. "But you made me feel so good, it was worth it," you whispered to him.
He studied your face for a second before lowering his mouth back onto yours in a long, lazy kiss. He eventually moved his lips down to your neck where blood was beginning to bead up from his bite. As he kissed you, he let go of your hand and pulled out of you, causing you to groan quietly. Miguel pulled away from your skin after a few heartbeats and rolled over next to you with a soft grunt.
You both lay in silence for a little while as your breathing started to even out. Your eyes had been closed, but after after a moment, you opened them and turned your head to look at Miguel. He was staring up at the ceiling with a faraway gaze, and you noticed how his eyebrows twitched with a perplexed expression.
He knew that you were looking at him, and after a moment, he sighed and turned to look at you, too. "What?" he asked quietly, his eyes containing hints of suspicion. You paused, studying his face for a second. "I can never tell what you're thinking about," you said finally. Miguel turned his face back up to look at the ceiling before muttering, "Good."
You rolled your eyes with a little huff of amusement. "But I can tell when something is bothering you," you continued. "What is it?"
Miguel didn't respond for a while, and you were starting to think he wouldn't answer. Finally, he let out another sigh and stated quietly, "That anomaly is going to wreak havoc on the multiverse." It was your turn to sigh, and you rolled over onto your side and rested your head on your hand.
"If you get to have rules, then so do I," you told him. "My rule is that you are not allowed to talk about work while in bed." Miguel's face turned back to look at you, and a faint smile appeared on his lips.
"Alright," he conceded. "No work." You smiled in satisfaction and said, "Good," before rolling onto your stomach and resting your head on your pillow while still facing him. His eyes never left your face, and you saw a glimmer of amusement in his expression.
"Are you staying here tonight?" Miguel asked softly, shifting his body to face you better. You closed your eyes for a second and let out a short hum. "I don't think so," you admitted when you opened your eyes. "I've got things I need to take care of back home."
He nodded silently in understanding, his eyes looking away from you. "Plus, I need to fix my suit tonight," you continued, "and I never keep any of my supplies at Web-Quarters."
Miguel's eyebrows scrunched together, and he closed his eyes for a second. "Web-Quarters?" he repeated, sounding incredibly disappointed. You chuckled at his reaction. "Oh, c'mon," you laughed, nudging his arm with your hand. "It's funny."
"It's stupid," he countered flatly.
"You're the only one who thinks so," you told him. "All the other Spider-People think it's great." He raised an eyebrow at you. "You've called the compound 'Web-Quarters' to every single Spider here?" he asked doubtfully.
You rolled your eyes. "Well, not all of them," you admitted. "But everyone I've said it to thought it was hilarious." "Like who?" he questioned skeptically. You looked upward as you recounted everyone who you had shared your little pun with. "Jess, Pav, Peter B. from Earth-616, Peter from Earth-13122, Gwen Stacey, Ben Reilly," you listed out for him.
At that last name, Miguel's face darkened, and he let out an irritated huff. "I don't want to hear you mention Ben Reilly to me ever again," he told you in a low voice. You scoffed playfully and rolled your eyes at him. "I'm serious," he insisted in a grave voice.
You studied his face for a moment, and you could see just how serious he was being. After a pause, you pushed yourself up onto your elbows and moved closer to him so that your face hovered over his. You raised a hand up to his face to brush away some of the hair that had stuck to his forehead and asked with a smug grin, "Why does it bother you so much if I do?"
You knew the answer, but you wanted to hear it from him again. He didn't respond for a second, studying your face quietly as his hand slid under your stomach and snaked around your waist. "Because I don't want you to think about anyone else when you're with me," he murmured as his eyes fixed on your lips.
The corners of your mouth curled upward, and you ran a finger over the angles of his face. You noted how his dark eyebrows were relaxed instead of drawn in a scowl, his eyes were observant but not critical, and the shape his full lips looked more like a smile than a frown. He was at ease when it was only you, and that filled you with an unexpected sense of satisfaction.
"I already told you," you said softly. "There was never anyone else." He hummed, running his fingers up your back. "Good," he whispered before lifting his head up and kissing you gently. You smiled against his lips and savored the feeling of your body against his.
The quiet moment between you was interrupted when a yellow, holographic form appeared from Miguel's watch. "Aww, you guys are so cute," Lyla cooed. Her figure was postured on her stomach with her head in her hands and her legs swinging like a giddy schoolgirl.
You and Miguel both jumped and cursed in surprise. "Lyla!" Miguel snarled in admonition, obviously irritated and embarrassed at being caught in bed with you. You buried your face against his shoulder with an awkward laugh as you felt your cheeks grow warm in embarrassment.
"Aww, c'mon," she lilted in amusement. "You don't have to be shy. I've known since day one." "Go away, Lyla," he growled, pulling at the comforter of your bed to try and cover himself. "I just wanted to let you know that the anomaly popped up again," she explained, "but it's been tricky tracking him since he disengaged the homing device."
Miguel huffed an exasperated breath. "Can this wait?" He snapped, still pulling at the blanket beneath him. "Not for much longer," she told him with a shrug. He heaved a large sigh and ran his hand over his face. "Fine," he muttered. "Now, go away."
"Alright, alright," Lyla said dismissively. "And don't worry, your secret is safe with me." With a smile and a wink, she disappeared.
You and Miguel laid in silence for a moment until you broke it with your laughter. Your shoulders were shaking as you laughed out the embarrassment that had washed over you. Miguel sighed again and turned his head to look at you. Seeing your smiling face caused his to soften considerably.
"Remind me to reprogram her," he grumbled quietly. You hummed in amusement and placed another kiss on his lips. "I guess that means you should get going," you said. Miguel closed his eyes and pulled back his arm from around your body. "I guess so," he agreed reluctantly.
You moved off of his body to allow him to sit up. He rubbed his hand across his face and pushed himself up off the bed while his suit enveloped his body again.
"How is that not nanotech?" You asked curiously as you watched him stand up. "I told you, it's much cooler than that," he stated. You hummed indifferently. "Yeah, yeah," you mumbled as you stretched out on your bed. "You always keep the cool toys for yourself."
He smirked down at you before lifting his arm to type something on his watch. "Sounds like somebody's jealous," he commented without looking at you. You raised an eyebrow at him. "Well, I wouldn't say that I'm the jealous one out of the two of us," You shot back.
Miguel seemed amused at your comment but didn't respond to it. Instead, he said, "You're still on call, you know." You smiled while sitting up to get dressed again. "So, I'm not grounded anymore?" You asked teasingly.
He turned and looked down at you with a thoughtful smile for a moment. "Don't test your luck," he muttered as he turned and walked out, leaving you staring at the door and wishing he would stay just a little longer.

1. Words of the Witches
Stepping out of the coffee shop and back onto the streets of the city of Toding, I gently pull the door closed behind me, tossing a purposefully casual smile back at the waitress as she locks the door, and flips the sign to closed.
2. Darkling
After six weeks on the road together, watching Lizzy had become something of a habit for Andric Roche.
3. Changeling
In the nocturnal peace of Lizzy's bedroom, that was lit only by the dim shards of light from a newly risen crescent mood, the thud of her jewellery box hitting the hard, wooden floor, and snapping open, seemed amplified.
4. Tale of the Shadowfox
Once upon a time, deep in the frozen lands to the north, there lived a community of foxes. They dug their dens deep into the arctic tundra, kept them protected from the chill winds beneath layers of powdery snow, and guarded each other from the arctic wolf packs, the bears that called the ice floes home, and the humans that made the glacial forests their hunting grounds.

"Why did you have to knock over the bloody vase?" Stella grumbled as she and Reilly ran through the streets of Antillune, the city guards barely a street behind them, and gaining.
8. Stolen
A gold coin pulled from the nobleman's pocket. Five silver strikes from the lady's purse. A cheap brass ring, but the gemstone was genuine and a handful of copper bits transferred from a shopkeeper to the outstretched hands of some street orphans.
9. A Rose By Any Other Name (Doctor Who Fanfiction)
It couldn't be—
It wasn't possible—
His blood ran cold, and fear froze in his lungs. The light of regeneration flowing through the frosted windows of his Tardis made his skin crawl.

Grim Reapers look like everyone else. No long black cloak, or heavy scythe, just a hood to ward off the ever present chill of death and their spirit-hound companion.

the circus was…not popular in the 2000’s?
okay i have to pull out my book of receipts here because let me tell you i think about this so often because in the moment i wasn’t registering how much circus/circus-adjacent imagery i was being exposed to and it was only when i looked back and realized that my 14 year old ass wrote a legitimate attempt at fiction on the doll palace dot com about a girl who gets swept away by a hot demon with side bangs to join, of all things, a circus, did the gates burst open to the flood of 2000’s circus imagery that had been forgotten. so like i’m gonna DUMP like you wouldn’t believe so get ready for a long post.
now first, this is how i define circus-adjacency: magicians, magic, burlesque, anything showy and flashy with a typically large vivacious cast, big teased hair and those small little doll lips with white powdered faces and big blush, grainy filters and red drapes, vegas and casinos and poker for some reason, and you know what fuck it i’m adding pirates in here too.
so let me tell you, first and foremost, the actual CIRCUS was thriving, particularly when you look at cirque du soleil. when you look at their wikipedia page, the 80’s are marked as their start and struggle, the 90’s as their expansion, and 2000-2009 as RAPID GROWTH. you couldn’t watch tv without a cirque du soleil commercial, pop in a dvd without a cirque advertisement, couldn’t drive without seeing a cirque billboard, people were raving about them, they were essentially the new sexier blue man group. now a few things happen in the 2010’s that result in their decline in popularity, they have to close shows due to recession, accidents resulting in death, the tsunami closing their show at tokyo disney, etc. essentially all that plus the cultural attitude is shifting away from the circus, we’re done with that we don’t want it anymore, sorry cirque. but when i say that cirque is probably one of the most popular live shows you can see, i mean it.
now music and movie and television wise, WOW, a lot happening there, let’s take a look:

1) i want to express so hard that i watched lady marmalade at like 7:00 am and then my ass went to school like it was a moment and no wonder i was struggling with my sexuality it changed me deeply and 2) i’m leaving out britney and fob because i already used them as examples and i’m also leaving out gwen stefani because she and i have beef from this time period but rich girl and whatcha waiting for have these very glamorous dollified pirate and alice in wonderland visuals. now please for the love of god watch the intro to criss angel mindfreak:
youtube
not to mention, british boyband take that released an album called “the circus” and had a whole accompanying circus tour where they rode a giant puppet elephant through the crowd and they performed in a giant red tent and lady gaga opened for them???? which sounds wild enough but then you see something like this and your whole brain collapses:
youtube
now if you think that’s where it stops you’re so damn wrong, because i read approximately 8 or 9 of these damn books:
Tumblr media
which revolves around a boy who joins a circus to become a vampire’s apprentice and all sorts of gnarly shit happens to them and everyone is some sort of creature, and that turns into the feature film the vampire’s assistant which inexplicably stars john c reilly, josh hutcherson, salma hayek, willem dafoe, orlando jones, ken watanabe and more.
anyways we have pirates of the caribbean which was huge, but we also have lots of vegas representation for some reason: poker face, 21, ocean’s movies, street magicians, cirque, huge rise in popularity of professional gambling etc. i went to vegas with my friend and her parents in 2008 as a 15 year old and the highlights of our trip were going to circus circus, a penn and teller show, and picking up xxx show girl cards off the ground.
you’ll notice that the primary musicians that are latching onto the circus aesthetic are emo (and emo-adjacent) and mega popular starlets, and with the rise of internet fame culture and paparazzi swarms and the constant constant barrage of an audience that puts you at the top only to pray on your failure so they can watch it live on television, like i think it makes sense for them to adopt this metaphor, as britney so aptly put it “all eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a circus,” to see millions of faces peering at you, throwing popcorn, telling you to get on the trapeze just so they can watch you fall. these are also WIDELY popular mainstream artists with very queer and femme leaning audiences and are consistently not taken seriously while being extremely exploited.
similarly to film at the time too, where you see a lot of romances, a lot of musical theater, a couple horror movies, etc. the magician thing i think is fully an exercise in masculinity but i think that’s a different story.
and i think it’s interesting with lots of 2000’s trends returning that we can already see what’s popping up again, vampires are back (hello iwtv and wwdits), pirates are back (hello ofmd), and even the circus is slowly making it’s way in (the greatest showman which i don’t want to even think about or really include because that was already 5 years ago, but hello guillermo del toro my beloved bringing out nightmare alley, and honestly even a small shout out to the quarry for having scary circus elements).
and like i don’t have a full whole explanation as of yet for why the circus became such a cultural staple, but it’s for certain that it very much was. thank you for coming to my 2000’s circus themed ted talk i’m sorry i did this to you.

It’s time for my first official ranking after seeing the interviews! Here’s to hoping I’m right about some of these (and wrong about others).
Tumblr media
Stan Card Activated
1. Blue- I still really like her and y’all really like her and I trust the fandom with every fiber of my being so I know we are right, I can feel it. I wish she had gotten more screen time in the interview but if she’s a last-minute alternate addition, it just pushes her even further.
I think I’m gonna like you
2. Jag- He gave me really good vibes in his picture and he’s giving me good vibes in his interview too! I think he’s gonna be a really chill guy but I can also see him being a huge mastermind and doing well in the game.
3. Bowie- I like her accent and she seems cool. I feel like I’ll vibe with her and she’ll be on the right side of the house. Don’t let me down woman!
4. Felicia- She seems sweet! She reminds me of all the nice older southern ladies I’ve met since moving to South Carolina. Nice and comforting. I feel like she won’t try to make waves in the beginning but I could see her getting pissed and telling someone off and I hope we get to.
I want to like you but something’s off
5. Izzy- Like I said, the queer musician connection has me wanting to like her but her crescendo joke was so fucking bad and I fear she’s just another Kaycee. Idk tho maybe she’s the butch lesbian we all needed. I have hope for her.
6. Mecole- The politician thing is throwing me off I’m not gonna lie. Also she still reminds me of Ameerah and I could totally see her being a bitch. However, I can also see her being an awesome strategist and actually getting some work done. If she’s a girlboss I’ll take her but if she’s just gonna drag people in the mud I will not.
7. Kirsten- There wasn’t much that I got from her, but she does seem like someone who’d end up aligning with the wrong people. I feel like she’ll be the most tolerable member of the alliance we all end up hating and we’ll all be begging her to work with the other side/s the entire time. Please prove me wrong girl sdifjpef.
Mid
8. Matt- I do really like the deaf representation, but he seems boring af. Not someone I can see myself caring about. Sorry.
9. Cameron- I could see myself potentially hating this guy, but he seems unproblematic to me as of now. I could see him woking with annoying people but also being kind of a floater. He’s practically TBD lol.
I don’t know yet
10. Jared- Apparently his mom is a Survivor legend? I haven’t seen Survivor so I would have no idea of knowing how good this guy could be, but family doesn’t mean shit sometimes. I can’t read this guy yet so I’m still wary. I just don’t want another Monte y’all.
11. Hisam- After watching the interview I have definitely changed my opinion about him, but I’m still wary. He seems like he could be another Michael maybe? I could also see him becoming irrelevant or being part of the annoying big alliance. Idk I can’t tell I think I’m going crazy.
Can’t stand your ass already
12. Red- I just know he’s going to be annoying. Is he going to be Frenchie? Cliff? Idk, but I don’t care for him either way. Out.
13. Reilly- She’s going to be in the stupid popular alliance and is gonna get into some stupid showmance and rat on the other girls. Useless!!!! Next.
14. America- I literally can’t stand her voice or her personality already. She reminds me of Alyssa from last season so much it hurts. She’s gonna get into a dumb showmance, be a bitch to everyone, start every rumor and bully train, etc. I just know it.
15. Luke- Nah this guy is literally just Kyle. I’m waiting for it.
16. Cory- I don’t give a fuck that his brother was on Survivor; I couldn’t stand looking at him or watching him talk. Literally didn’t hear a single word he said because I was so appalled by what I was seeing. How is someone just built like that. I’m sorry ksdjfposdjgdfg I know he can’t control these things but I have a feeling I will be proven right. Cory, make me feel guilty about this please.

House Guests Ranked
Pre-Show
This isn’t a list of their likelihood of winning. Just who I like so far.
1. Matt - chill but also competitive
2. Cory - he’s really articulate about his plans and seems to have such a dynamic personality
3. Hisam - confident and wise
4. Felicia - comfortable with herself - love how she’s half playing to see if she’s as self-aware as she thinks she is
5. Reilly - in it to win it
6. Jared - the longer interview clip really let him shine - he seems super personable
7. Izzy - I think she’ll be a dud but I get good, easygoing vibes from her
8. Mecole - full of personality and funny
9. Cameron - seems chill but may be a wild card
10. Jag - his interview didn’t really wow me but he seems like he’s nice
11. Blue - I kind of expect her to be potential for chaotic energy which will make things fun to watch
12. Bowie
13. Luke - I don’t know what to think about this guy - he could just be nerdy and socially awkward or he could be a serial killer - I don’t know
14. America - she reminds me so much of BB24 Alyssa it’s insane - talking a big game but likely to throw away her game for a showmance
15. Red - not really a fan of I’m just gonna fly by the seat of my pants; but his sales experience might come in handy when relating to others; we’ll see
16. Kirsten - she said the word that must never be spoken “steamroll” - I’m not here for floaters; I honestly think she’ll be a very loyal alliance member and can see her definitely making it to jury but that’s not the game play I enjoy watching

TV I Liked in 2022
Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.
2022 brought plenty of new continuing and limited series of note, while returning shows retained the qualities that set them apart to begin with. There were outstanding series finales and expectation-defying debuts. This year I’ve divided my list into new shows (which I’ve folded the Disney+ Marvel shows into because there were only three of them, and two of them were pretty great!) and returning highlights. I also threw in some honorable mentions for additional viewing, if you’re really looking for content this winter.
Tumblr media
New and Notable:
9. (tie) Winning Time: Season 1 (HBO) and Welcome to Wrexham: Season 1 (FX)
I’ll kick off my list of new shows with a couple of very different series about sports that are united by being compulsively watchable and each balancing a comic touch with more dramatic moments.
Winning Time is a fictionalized (highly, according to some reactions) account of the beginning of Los Angeles Lakers’ 1980s “Showtime” era with the signing of Magic Johnson. Adapted by Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice), the series is hyper-kinetic, using a mix of film stock and camera formats (including grainy Super 8), plenty of fourth wall breaking by its characters and a heightened sense of reality. It’s A LOT – reveling in the excess of its era and subjects, maybe too much? – but I ultimately find it fun and compelling, especially the performances including John C Reilly as team owner Jerry Buss, Jason Segal as interim coach Paul Westhead, Adrien Brody as reporter-turned-assistant coach (and future head coach) Pat Riley, Quincy Isaiah as Magic himself, Wood Harris as struggling forward Spencer Haywood and Solomon Hughes as superstar center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, just to name a few of the absolutely STACKED cast. I didn’t even mention Sally Field! Or Tracy Letts! And the list goes on and on!
Welcome to Wrexham, on the other hand, is a documentary about actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ recent purchase of a bottom-tier Welsh soccer club. As a big fan of the sport I knew I’d get around to it eventually, but I put off watching for awhile because I’m not a big fan of Reynolds’ smarmy “lovable asshole” stage persona and I figured the show was kind of a Johnny-come-lately riding the coattails of the likes of Ted Lasso’s success. That said, I was unprepared for how balanced and well-made this series is. It certainly spends plenty of time with Rob and Ryan (who both come off amiable and endearing), but more on the actual inner workings of the club and their supporters and community. I appreciated the ongoing narrative arc of the season being supplemented with focuses on specific aspects of the game like hooliganism and tournament play as well as spotlights on individual players, staff and supporters. There have been plenty of soccer documentaries before, but this one is a top-notch love-letter to the glories and heartbreaks of the beautiful game.
8. Ms. Marvel (Disney+)
The introduction of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe could have fallen into the clichés of melodramatic teen drama, but it mostly avoids them through the centering of its charming Muslim cast of characters, bringing fresh perspective to the genre. It also features innovative effects work and vibrant art direction that bring Kamala’s inner world to life and provides fun glimpses at “ground-level” life in the MCU (i.e. an Avengers fan convention she attends early on).
7. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Season 1 (Disney+)
I didn’t know that I needed a straight-up half-hour superhero sitcom in my life (although my love of all iterations of the Tick may have been a sign), but She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is an utter delight that rewards fans of even the most obscure minutiae of the MCU while remaining funny and accessible to more casual viewers. Guest appearances from existing characters (Daredevil, Wong, the Abomination) work like gangbusters, and introductions to some of Marvel’s most D-List heroes and villains (Leap-Frog, Porcupine, Mr. Immortal, etc.) are wonderfully absurd. The show’s comic book-accurate fourth wall breaking is employed well, and the completely meta finale episode skewers the MCU and its tropes in winning fashion.
6. Abbott Elementary: Seasons 1 and 2 (ABC)
Just when it seemed the mockumentary genre was completely beaten into the ground, Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary came along to prove that great humor can enliven any format. The ABC sitcom centers on a public elementary school in Philadelphia, focused primarily on the teachers and staff, though the students sometimes take the spotlight as well. While it doesn’t shy away from depicting the challenges of underfunded institutions, the series is chiefly a vehicle for big laughs and big heart and a salute to public servants.
5. The Sandman: Season 1 (Netflix)
As a comic book fan in the 90s, I heard a lot about Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics via the likes of Wizard magazine without ever actually having read any issues (mainly because I was a kid then and it was on a “mature” imprint). I was intrigued when I learned it was becoming a Netflix series but also didn’t really think it’d be for me – I tend more toward superhero fare than the dark fantasy/lite horror it traffics in. But upon watching the series, I found myself swept up in the tale and won over by both its world-building and excellent cast. While it occasionally veers into over-exposition and slight disjointedness (from mixing highly serialized storytelling with abrupt pivots to standalone episodes), its artful, impressionistic effects and thematic resonances (hope, change/growth, dreaming itself) more than make up for its shortcomings.
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Season 1 (Amazon Prime Video)
This recommendation comes with the caveat that I am not by any means a J.R.R. Tolkien fanatic, having only read The Hobbit years ago and finding his ornate prose impenetrable for my personal taste, so I cannot speak to Rings of Power’s fidelity (or lack thereof) to the source material. And while I love the original Peter Jackson LOTR film trilogy in all its Extended Edition glory, I barely made it through the first Hobbit film and skipped the next two altogether, as I found them way too esoteric and tedious. I feared something similar with this Amazon Prime prequel series, assuming I’d be bored to tears by Middle Earth history I’d find dry and listless. This proved another pleasant surprise then, as once I gave it a shot, I found myself fully engaged in the story, characters and magnificent visuals – the production design is seriously gorgeous and I could watch cameras exploring these new corners of Middle Earth all day. I also appreciate the series’ themes of light and dark, while adding some shades of gray that lend a bit more complexity to Tolkien’s world, even among his most disposably “evil” adversaries, the Orcs. You! Shall! Not! Pass! (on this show, or you’ll seriously be missing out)
3. Andor: Season 1 (Disney+)
Turns out 2022 was really a year of genre shows that defied my skepticism. I saw 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story when it was released and liked it okay but with a number of caveats, and frankly, had zero interest when I heard a prequel series was coming based on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor character (even though I like Luna!). Well, it turns out that Andor is not only the hands-down-best of the year’s three new live action Star Wars shows but possibly the best one to date (sorry Grogu, I still love you) — and maybe even the best SW content since the original trilogy?
The series’ focus is the inner-workings of the Rebel Alliance under the growing influence of the fascist Empire, and while I often found those elements of the movies a bit dry, creator Tony Gilroy brings them to life like a white-knuckle spy thriller (fitting, as he wrote the Bourne trilogy scripts). There are other genre influences that come into play as well, such as film noir, the futuristic neon dystopia of Blade Runner, heist films, prison escape movies, comedies of manners and more. This first season is comprised of satisfying three-to-four-episode arcs which keep things moving like a well-oiled Death Star assembly line. Bravo.
2. The Bear: Season 1 (hulu)
A riveting portrait of familial obligation and the food service industry, hulu’s The Bear chronicles a celebrity chef returning to his home of Chicago to take over an Italian beef stand left to him by his brother. The scripts are taut, the cast is uniformly excellent, the filmmaking is invigorating and the 90s alt-rock soundtrack is expertly deployed. If its Chicago references aren’t always 100% accurate, I’ll give it a pass for capturing the spirit of the city, its food culture and its people. Yes, Chef!
1. Severance: Season 1 (Apple TV+)
Severance first appears to be something of a hybrid of great influences: the mundane bureaucratic dystopias of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, Netflix’s Maniac, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Black Mirror all come to mind. But rather than feeling derivative, this darkly comedic sci-fi exploration of the divide between work life and home life has a unique and captivating vision of its own, with indelible characters, led by Adam Scott’s Mark S. Episode 9, “The We We Are,” is best season finale I’ve seen in years, an incredibly tense and satisfying blend of questions answered and stakes raised. Bring on Season 2!
BONUS: Animated Special
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse (Apple TV+)
The short film adaptation of illustrator Charlie Mackesy’s deeply felt book is a gentle, meditative and gorgeously animated rumination on life, friendship and purpose. While there is a narrative arc to the special, it doesn’t feel forced but instead true to the spirit of the more unstructured source material. A touching note to end the year on.
A Few More Worthwhile Debuts:
A Friend of the Family (Peacock) and Under the Banner of Heaven (hulu) – have yourself a Mormon true crime double-feature! (Or maybe don’t – they’re both intense!)
Grand Crew (NBC) – a fun network hangout sitcom with a winning cast
We Own the Streets (HBO) – a limited series based on a true story of police corruption in Baltimore that’s basically a Wire reunion
The Afterparty (Apple TV+) – come for the great cast and creators, stay for the incredible Ben Schwartz-focused musical episode!
Great Seasons of Returning Favorites:
5. Barry: Season 3 (HBO)
In its latest season, Barry is hard to watch but even harder to look away from, a show that feels as compellingly fractured as its characters, as pitch-black darkly comedic as ever. Hader’s titular Barry is less a person than a zombie at this point, in fruitless, soulless pursuit of some sort of purpose or redemption, which, [spoiler alert!] will not find him. Everyone else is likewise just spiraling out for most of the season, though some catharsis is found for certain parties in the final episode.
4. Stranger Things 4 (Netflix)
The fourth season of Stranger Things is as compulsively watchable as ever; still a pastiche of 80s Stephen King, Amblin Entertainment and John Hughes influences to be sure, but memorable characters, performances and production design transcend the cliches to create something worthwhile in its own right. The episode lengths this outing do start to feel a bit padded (especially the final two episodes/basically movies) but the added time spent with this cast helps to overlook the protracted plotting.
3. Better Call Saul: Season 6 (AMC)
Better Call Saul’s final season wastes no time in upping the drama with resolutions to its drug war plots coming fast and furious and culminating in a truly shocking mid-season finale that expertly sets the stage for its homestretch. While I find the momentum to fall off slightly in the last couple episodes, I can’t say anything should be different – after all, slippin’ Jimmy McGill is nothing if not an architect of self-sabotage and any other “happier” end to the series would stretch the limits of credulity.
2. Atlanta: Seasons 3 and 4 (FX)
The return of Atlanta in 2022 was a reminder that it is a show unlike anything else on television, a wholly unique vision full of powerful parables, off-the-wall humor and on occasion, surprising heart. Spring’s third season mixes culture clash comedy of the cast touring through various cities in Europe with several Twilight Zone-esque stand-alone episodes about race relations; what it lacks in narrative cohesion it makes up for in sheer boldness. Fall’s fourth and final season returns the action to Atlanta with fewer detours from the main cast (but, you know, the occasional faux documentary about A Goofy Movie), but focusing primarily on just one or two characters at a time. The final episode is a fitting ending for a series that always had a rhythm of its own even while it acknowledged influences such as Twin Peaks.
1. What We Do In The Shadows: Season 4 (FX)
Still the most consistently hilarious show on television, WWITS shows no signs of losing either its wit or edge. With new and bizarre situations including an amazing home makeover show parody, a visit to “The Night Market” and the entire life cycle of the creature that crawled out of the chest cavity of Colin Robinson, there is plenty to sink your teeth into (sorry, not sorry), even four seasons in.
Also Still Good:
The White Lotus: Season 2 (HBO)
Queer Eye: Season 6 (Netflix)
All Creatures Great and Small: Season 2 (PBS)
Girls5eva: Season 2 (Peacock)
Rutherford Falls: Season 2 (Peacock)
LEGO Masters: Season 3 (FOX)

16 Questions, 16 People
Thanks so much for the tag Tessa ❤️ @tessabennet I love your Andy Serkis story 🤣
Nickname: Kel, Kalee, Kstar - I shall respond to all of these!
Zodiac: Capricorn ♑ almost bday month!
Height: 6ft
Last thing I googled: Willys Wonderland... It's a movie... It's Nicholas Cage - and that's probably all you need to know...
Followers: 703 (I really should do a followers celebration at some point 🤔)
Song stuck in my head: short skirt/long jacket by Cake (I'm currently watching Chuck and that's the theme song)
How much sleep: sleep?? What is that - a concept surely... At the moment I'm probably getting 1-2hr blocks about 3 times a night... The joys of a newborn
Lucky number: I'm going to say... 9
Aesthetic: what I think I am in my head and what I actually am, is two different things - but is mainstream alternative a thing? I basically live in jeans...
Dream job: owning an eclectic bookshop/cafe in a gorgeous little holiday town (it would have a space to hold nights for knitting groups, colouring, painting, D&D, Nintendo 64 play nights - whatever!)
Wearing: tank top and a floral skirt - it was warm today - finally getting some summer weather!
Favourite instrument: I love piano, learnt when I was young, there is nothing quite like sitting down and playing a complex song with just sheet music and your hands and feet...
Favourite song: this changes a lot... At the moment it's The World Is Ugly by MCR
Favourite author: Matthew Reilly, it's just action packed all the way through and reads like a movie - plus he's Aussie :) (Neil Gaiman is a close second ATM!)
Favourite animal noise: it's oddly specific, but when you lie on the floor and cover your head and face and your dog sniffs really exited, trying to get to you...
Something random: I have been to Ireland three times, been to Blarney Castle three times and have not kissed the Blarney stone once... (Probably why my luck is so terrible 🤣)
Okay - tagging with no pressure at all @darter-blue @martelldoran @iamsherlockedondoctorwho @sam-i-am-100 @into-a-ship-or-2 @jbarneswilson @indyluckycharlie @becassine @oh-i-swear-writes @anavalancheofstucky @allegedlyann & @aciremii it's 12 not 16, but I invite any one to do it 🥰

Because my brain is stuck on Letterkenny after finishing season 9 I’ve been watching a bunch of the behind the scenes stuff from season 2 on youtube and I just figured out the ages of Jonesy and Reilly in season 2: they’re 20. I’m sure other views picked up on it, and it makes sense, but in season 2 they say they were cut in they’re overage year. I decided to check what age that may be and according to wikipedia (so, y’know) in canadian junior hockey players can’t start the year older than 20 and that year is called the overage year, given we don’t see them drink alcohol for a couple seasons after (which really should have given it away) they’re aren’t 21 yet at that point. This also means we can get an approximate fix of Katy’s age.
Note that first we must assume that year’s pass with some regularity, that there’s a new year after every winter season, and not between summer seasons. thus Jonesy and Reilly are 20 for both seasons 1 and 2
In the spelling bee episode she’s been in 10 prior adult spelling bees (9 wins plus Stewart’s win). If the lower age limit is 18, she’s 27 in seasons 1&2 and a bit old to be dating a couple 20yo hockey players, Other possible lower limits are 15, which would make her about  24 in s1&2, or (and my guess) 13, so she would be 22 in s1&2, and old enough to drink in the first season, This also feels like a natural point to distinguish between a kids spelling be (12 and under) and an adult spelling bee (13 and over). Also a 22yo dating a 20 isn’t out of the question, it happens at plenty of colleges. (It’s also possible the cut off is 12 and up and she’s 21 in s1&2, but Letterkenny seems like the place to decide that at 13 you’re old enough to spell with the big boys but 12 is still a child.)
Since we know Katy and Daryl were in grade 9 at the same time, they are likely the same age, and Wayne isn’t likely more than 3 or 4 years older than Katy, so in s1&2 he’s probably 25. And Dan I always figured was a couple years older than Wayne.

First Line Tag game
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favorite authors.
I tend to begin first sentences with names for some reason haha. My favorite is 18, because it really just sets the tone for that whole story so well!
I was tagged by @aadmelioraa, thank you darling <3 I'll tag @whenimaunicorn @raincityruckus @geekandbooknerd and @darkcloakedinfinitevoid
1. All That's Best of Dark and Bright, a Tam Lin-inspired Sihtric x Eahlswith AU: Eahlswith hates traveling with this rowdy, ragtag company of Danes a little less each day.
2. To Curse a King, a Sihtric x Skade dub-con knife kink crackship that you can't prove didn't happen: Skade does not flinch as the knife pierces the skin at the crook of her elbow, and she does not struggle against the firm hand holding her wrist in place.
3. Silver Hairpins, Sihtric x Eahlswith canon-compliant fluff: Sihtric was always happy to come home flush with victory, but this time he was even happier
4. The Heart of a Family, Sihtric captured and tortured by Kjartan and Sven, because this poor darling is too easy to whump: Sihtric can't remember how long it’s been since he's seen the sun, though he knows when night is because that's when Kjartan and Sven leave him alone.
5. The Weight Behind a Blessing, a one-shot exploring a bit of Sihtric's past and his blossoming bromance with Osferth: Osferth is not the first Christian to bless him for splinting an injured arm, although he is the ugliest, Sihtric thinks, smiling down at Baby Monk after he slips the sling over his head.
6. To Tame a Wildcat, a little bit of Sihtric x reader battlefield kink that I will never apologize for: There is no softness in him now, the son of a man known for his cruelty, a fierce man in his own right.
7. we keep pretending the sun will not rise, a piece that explores the entire relationship of Katy x Reilly x Jonesy, from when they're in high school until when they break up: Katy tries not to smile over her coffee cup at the two boys across the small plastic table, their arms pressed together, Reilly’s damp hair dripping onto his shoulders and Jonesy’s eyes wide and bright.
8. so fill to me the parting glass, Sihtric tries to comfort Beocca when he's mourning Thyra, and Beocca learns maybe the rat-faced Dane isn't so terrible after all: Beocca cannot even stand to look at him, the Dane boy that Uhtred keeps in his company, the son of the man who tormented his wife for years
9. Pulse of my Heart, she has been searching for Finan for years, and doesn't believe she will ever find him: It was a great sword, longer and lighter than most, designed to be wielded by a man who danced around his foes like a whirlwind give human form.
10. Blasphemy, Osferth, wounded and tired of Finan's incessant worrying, asks Sihtric to sing. Sihtric cannot sing: They were on the road somewhere in Mercia, and this was one of those times that Sihtric felt he’d ridden the entire length of this land, from Wessex to Northumbria, a dozen times over
11. To Throw Curses, a piece exploring Sihtric's childhood, that I wrote after wondering why Sihtric knew so much about curses: His mother is a good Christian woman and proud of the fact that she’s managed to maintain her faith despite her hardships, so maybe Sihtric shouldn’t be surprised when she crosses herself and leans forward to repeat the gesture over his body, too.
12. He Lacks the Courage, OC Thora x Ubbe, tons of angst, Bjorn is a jerk, but that's just who he is: The boat rocks to the motion of the small waves and the rowers’ work, the sun paints the sky in luminous pinks and oranges and the waves spark and dance with the color of flames, and usually Thora would love this but tonight it just feels like emptiness
13. To Lie Down With Wolves, Ubbe x OC Imogene, Ubbe is disgraced for betraying King Ivar long ago, and keeps the slave Imogene against his better judgment (co-written with @darkcloakedinfinitevoid!): Imogene hasn't seen a wolf since she was small, the winter the snow reached halfway up the side of her family's cottage.
14. Funeral Pyre, Sihtric returns to Dunholm, a lifetime after he's left it, and finally puts its ghosts to rest: When Sihtric sees Dunholm rearing up on its high crag, bile rises into his throat but he keeps his face impassive because his friends are watching him.
15. Fighting Lessons, Nancy Wheeler x Jonathan Byers x Steve Harrington, Steve teaches his lovers to fight in the Wheelers backyard, because none of them feel safe even though the gate is closed. Post season 1: He’s had this fear in him, ever since the cabin, that someday Nancy would be without her handgun.
16. Counting Breaths, in the dark when she can't sleep after falling into that place, the only thing that keeps Nancy sane is the rhythm of Jonathan's breath: Inhale, one.
17. Slow Hands, modern AU, Ubbe x reader, reader runs a horse sanctuary and Ubbe is her new farrier.: Finding a farrier was always such a pain, and of course as soon as the horses had gotten familiar with John, he'd thrown his back out.
18. Captured, Ivar x shieldmaiden reader hate-fucking, AND THERE WAS ONLY ONE BED: “Do you really think that’s going to work?”
19. First Sight, a companion piece to my longfic Feed You the Sky. Ivar and Kára reminisce on the first time they saw each other: Ivar is an old man now, his black hair streaked with gray, and the fire in his wife’s hair is dulled but still he cannot resist running his fingers through it every chance he gets.
20. Hidden Daggers, Sihtric and Eahlswith meet-cute and first night together, and you can't prove it didn't happen exactly like this: Sihtric was the son of a dead slave girl and he loves being a free man, he loves carrying swords and serving Uhtred and wearing silver arm-rings.

When in France, I wear no pants!
This is my French playlist. It’s one that I am very proud of. It took me several months of researching, listening, finding, playing records to gather over 400 songs. But, France. What a country! This playlist could go as far as 500 songs.
Hit play: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-iHPcxymC1-CHRTel_bBjdT_DAHLrnvX
There is an endless amount of talent from this part of the world. From across many decades the songs just keep coming. Incredible. Une région tellement incroyable pour la musique. Here is a list I created. It took me many months to compile.

Glenda Farrell (June 30, 1904 – May 1, 1971) was an American actress. With a career spanning more than 50 years, Farrell appeared in over 100 films and television series, as well as numerous Broadway play. She won an Emmy Award in 1963 for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her performance as Martha Morrison in the medical drama television series Ben Casey.
Farrell began acting on stage as a child and continued with various theatre companies and on Broadway before signing with Warner Bros. Embodying the brassy blonde character of the early talkies. Farrell was a signature 1930s Warner Bros. star, starring in films such as Little Caesar (1931), I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) and Lady for a Day (1933). Starting with Smart Blonde (1937), Farrell played Torchy Blane, the hard-boiled, wisecracking reporter in a series of popular films; which later was credited by comic book writer Jerry Siegel as the inspiration for the DC Comics reporter, Lois Lane. After leaving Warner Bros. in 1939, Farrell remained active in film, television and theatre throughout rest of her career.
Farrell was born in Enid, Oklahoma, to Wilhelmina "Minnie" (nee Messer, 1879-1931) of German descent and Charles A. Farrell (1873-1937) of Irish and Cherokee descent. Farrell was the only daughter and had two younger brothers, Eugene and Richard. After her family moved to Wichita, Kansas, Farrell began acting on stage with a theatrical company at age seven, playing the role of Little Eva in the play Uncle Tom's Cabin. Farrell's mother had never achieved her desire of being an actress, encouraged and supported her daughter's acting interests. When her family moved to San Diego, California, a teenage Farrell joined the Virginia Brissac Stock Company. Farrell made the third honour roll in Motion Picture Magazine's "Fame and Fortune Contest". Her picture and biography were featured in the magazine's April 1919 issue, which also stated that Farrell had some experience in the chorus, vaudeville, and camp entertainments. Farrell received a formal education at the Mount Carmel Catholic Academy.
In 1928, Farrell was cast as the lead actress in the play The Spider and made her film debut in a minor role in Lucky Boy. Farrell moved to New York City in 1929, where she replaced Erin O'Brien-Moore as Marion Hardy in Aurania Rouverol's play Skidding. The play later served as the basis for the Andy Hardy film series. By April 1929, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that she had played the role 355 times. Farrell appeared in a number of other plays, including Divided Honors, Recapture, and Love, Honor and Betray with George Brent, Alice Brady, and Clark Gable.
In 1930, she starred in the comedy short film The Lucky Break with Harry Fox, and in July 1930 Film Daily announced that Farrell had been cast in Mervyn LeRoy's film Little Caesar as the female lead, Olga Stassoff. Afterward, she returned to Broadway and starred in On the Spot at the Forrest Theater. At the time, Farrell conceded that motion pictures offered immense salaries, but felt the theater was the foundation of the actor's profession.[6] She appeared in several more plays.
In 1932, Farrell starred in the hit play Life Begins. Her performance caught the attention of Jack Warner, who signed her to a contract with the Warner Bros. film studio and cast her to recreate the role in Warner Bros.' film adaptation of Life Begins later that year. Farrell did not return to the stage until 1939.
In her first two years with Warner Bros., Farrell starred in 17 films, including Girl Missing (1933), Gambling Ship (1933), Man's Castle (1933) opposite Spencer Tracy, and Columbia Pictures' Lady for a Day (1933) by director Frank Capra. Farrell sometimes would work on three pictures that were shooting at the same time and managed to transition from one role to another effortlessly. She worked in over 20 movies between 1934 and 1936, starring in films such as Go into Your Dance (1935), Little Big Shot (1935) and High Tension (1936).
Farrell was close friends with fellow Warner Bros. actress Joan Blondell,[8] and throughout the early 1930s, they were paired as a comedy duo in a series of five Warner Bros. movies: Havana Widows (1933), Kansas City Princess (1934), Traveling Saleslady (1935), We're in the Money (1935) and Miss Pacific Fleet (1935). She also appeared with Blondell in the Academy Award-nominated Gold Diggers of 1935 and Gold Diggers of 1937 musical film series. Farrell and Blondell co-starred in a total of nine films. Together, they came to personify the smart and sassy, wisecracking dames of '30s and '40s film.
In 1937, Farrell began starring as Torchy Blane, the fast-talking wisecracking newspaper reporter.[9] Warner Bros. had started to develop a film adaptation of "MacBride and Kennedy" stories by detective novelist Frederick Nebel in 1936. For the film version, Kennedy is changed to a woman named Theresa "Torchy" Blane and is in love with MacBride's character. Director Frank MacDonald immediately knew whom he wanted for the role of Torchy Blane. Farrell had already proved that she could play hard-boiled reporters in Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) and Hi, Nellie! (1934); and was quickly cast as Torchy with Barton MacLane playing detective Steve McBride in the first Torchy Blane film Smart Blonde (1937).
Smart Blonde was a surprise hit and became a popular second feature with moviegoers. Warner Bros. starred her in several more Torchy Blane movies opposite Barton MacLane. She portrayed Torchy in seven films from 1937 to 1939. The films took Farrell's popularity to a new level. She was beloved by the moviegoing public and received a huge amount of fan mail for the films. On her portrayal of the Torchy Blane character, Farrell said in her 1969 Time interview: "So before I undertook to do the first Torchy, I determined to create a real human being—and not an exaggerated comedy type. I met those [news-women] who visited Hollywood and watched them work on visits to New York City. They were generally young, intelligent, refined, and attractive. By making Torchy true to life, I tried to create a character practically unique in movies."
Along with starring in the Torchy Blane series, Farrell appeared in a number of other films, including Breakfast for Two (1937), Hollywood Hotel (1937), and Prison Break (1938). Additionally, she performed in several radio series, including Vanity and Playhouse in 1937, and Manhattan Latin with Humphrey Bogart in 1938.
Farrell was elected to a one-year term as the honorary mayor of North Hollywood in 1937, beating her competition Bing Crosby and Lewis Stone by a three-to-one margin. Even though it began as a Warner Bros. publicity stunt, Farrell took the job seriously, attending functions, presentations, and ceremonies. She was also put in charge when the North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that it wanted to put sewers along Ventura Highway and started the groundwork for that project.
In 1939, Farrell left Warner Bros. when her contract expired. Several factors resulted in her decision including, feeling Warner Bros. was typecasting her as a newspaper reporter, a disagreement by Jack Warner for a pay rise, and wanting to return to the theatre. Farrell later told syndicated columnist Bob Thomas in 1952: "There's something more satisfying about working in a play. You get that immediate response from the audience, and you feel that your performance is your own. In pictures, you get frustrated because you feel you have no power over what you're doing".
In July 1939, Farrell starred in the lead role in the play Anna Christie at the Westport Country Playhouse, then followed that with a summer stock production of S. N. Behrman's play Brief Moment. She co-starred with Lyle Talbot and Alan Dinehart in the long-running play Separate Rooms at Broadway's Plymouth Theater for a successful 613-performance run throughout 1940 and 1941. In April 1942, she starred in the Broadway play, The Life of Reilly.
Farrell returned to motion pictures in 1941, starring in director Mervyn LeRoy's film noir, Johnny Eager. Throughout the '40s, '50s, and '60s, Farrell continued to appear in numerous films, including the Academy Award-nominated The Talk of the Town (1942), Heading for Heaven (1947) and the 1954 Charlton Heston adventure epic Secret of the Incas.
Farrell made her television debut in 1949 in the anthology series The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre. She appeared in over 40 television series between 1950 and 1969, including Kraft Theatre, Studio One in Hollywood, The United States Steel Hour, Bonanza, and Bewitched.
In 1963, she guest-starred in the ABC medical drama series Ben Casey as Martha Morrison in the two-part episode "A Cardinal Act of Mercy". She won the Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding performance in a supporting role by an actress. Farrell co-starred with her son Tommy Farrell in two comedy films in 1964: Kissin' Cousins with Elvis Presley and Jerry Lewis in The Disorderly Orderly.
Farrell briefly retired in 1968, but soon decided to return to acting. Farrell's final work in her long career was the Broadway play Forty Carats. She was appearing in Forty Carats at the Morosco Theatre until ill health forced her to leave the play a few months later. Farrell was eventually diagnosed with lung cancer.
In 1920, Farrell was hired to do a dance routine at a Navy benefit ball in San Diego. There she met her first husband, Thomas Richards. They were married from 1921 to 1929. Their son, actor Tommy Farrell, was born in 1921. In 1931, she was engaged to Jack Durant of the comedy duo "Mitchell and Durant" but never married him. She dated screenwriter Robert Riskin a few years later.
In 1941, Farrell married Dr. Henry Ross. The couple met when Farrell sprained her ankle during a performance of the play Separate Rooms and was treated backstage by Ross, who had been called forth from the audience. Ross was a staff surgeon at New York's Polyclinic Hospital and West Point graduate, who later served as chief of the public health section on General Eisenhower's staff. Farrell and Ross remained married until her death 30 years later. Farrell was a devout Catholic.
In 1971, Farrell died from lung cancer, aged 66, at her home in New York City and was interred in the West Point Cemetery in West Point, New York. When Ross, who did not remarry, died in 1991, he was buried with her.
Comic book writer Jerry Siegel credits Farrell's portrayal of Torchy Blane as the inspiration for the fictional Daily Planet reporter and Superman's love interest, Lois Lane. Siegel also named June Farrell, one of the characters in his Funnyman comic book series, after Farrell.
On February 8, 1960, Farrell received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to motion pictures, at 6524 Hollywood Boulevard.
In 1977, Farrell's husband Dr. Henry Ross donated 38 acres of land to the Putnam County Land Trust, establishing the Glenda Farrell–Henry Ross Preserve.

The Rosscars 2020
Tumblr media
Wow. It’s that time of year again, only this time it’s different because it’s on a blog that no one will read! (hold for applause) Welcome to the first annual online publication for the Rosscars (hold for applause while the reader acknowledges how positively droll it is that I combined my name with “Oscars”). Who can forget such indelible Rosscar memories like when Steven Soderbergh surprised us all and won Best Director for Out of Sight or Bill Irwin’s beautiful speech upon winning Best Supporting Actor for Rachel Getting Married?! The Rosscars mean something different to everyone, but we all know that they mean quality choices made by a committee of one schmuck. This year’s Rosscars are bizarre because in an effort to be more like the Academy guidelines, film’s nominated have been released between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021. As usual, theatrical windows be damned, streamers are welcome. Of course, I have my gripes. I like categorizing movies by release year – specifically, when they become available to the plain old public like yours truly – not at festivals, limited runs in NYC and LA. Well, the Oscars are still weeks away and I feel like everybody wants to forget about last year and move onto this one that we’re already three months into - So here are my awards for the films, performers, and craftspeople that stood out in a pretty exceptional year for movies even though distribution was stranger than ever.
Tumblr media
**A few caveats and guidelines to Rosscar newcomers (which I imagine is just a formality since we all know the Rosscars so well)**
The rules and categories are a little different around here. First, not every category is honored directly. That’s for a few reasons, chiefly that I don’t feel qualified to reward the technical categories properly – I suppose I should say that I feel less qualified to do so than the “above the line” categories. In keeping with the Academy standard, there are five nominees in each category, except for Best Picture, Best Non-Fiction/Documentary Feature, and Best Ensemble Cast which allow up to ten. Every category, save those three, will have the possibility of honorable mentions, because I want to highlight some things that just barely missed the cut. The narrowing down of a lot of these categories was awfully tough.
Nominees are listed alphabetically, and the winners are in bold and italics.
Tumblr media
Also, it’s important to keep in mind that I couldn’t see everything (this isn’t a job and it’s still $20 to rent The Father, y’all) and that these are just the opinions of one (self-described) “bozo on the internet.” If you’re a reader and have different picks, feel free to share!
Special Commendations for some things that I want to recognize: • Ludwig Goransson for his Tenet score which is an absolute banger • The costumes of Emma. (Alexandra Byrne), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Ann Roth), and Small Axe (Jaqueline Durran, Sinéad Kidao, and Lisa Duncan) all struck me as exceptional • Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross with their scores for both Soul and Mank. Crazy that Pixar is working with the guy who made “Closer” • The cinematography of Da 5 Bloods (Newton Thomas Sigel), First Cow (Christopher Blauvelt), Beanpole (Kseniya Sereda), and A White, White Day (Maria von Hausswolff)
The Rosscars red carpet was, as usual, a bizarre affair. People filed into the theater and it seemed like the only encounters were awkward ones. Vin Diesel showed up in character as Bloodshot, Aaron Sorkin started getting really verbose about what a lovely night it was, and it became clear that most of the celebrities in attendance didn’t read their invitations closely enough to realize that this was not, in fact, the Academy Awards.
Everyone’s seated, and the show is under way. After a medley about the nominees this year by Common and Seth McFarlane that was more corny but clever than it was funny, the first official category is here, and the presenter is none other than... Ross!
Tumblr media

Everyone loves a montage. The audience gets comfortable in their seats as the video screens start to show a montage of some of the most famous moments from Hollywood’s most magical movies. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers waltz, gliding across a dance floor like two hovering angels. There’s a clip of Leo declaring himself king of the world in Titanic, the flying bicycles in ET, Bogart stares longingly into Bacall’s eyes, and then there’s some scene where Tom Cruise rides a motorcycle from 2010′s Knight and Day. The audience all seems confused how that last one got in there. The John Williams music swells as little Kevin McAllister screams when puts on aftershave. We see clips of Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver, Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia embrace Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, Bruce Lee smoothly declares that boards don’t hit back and... wait... was that a clip from Michel Gondry’s Green Hornet with Seth Rogen? And that’s a clip from What Happens in Vegas... Bad Teacher... Vanilla Sky... Shrek 2... Any Given Sunday... Everyone is flummoxed. The last clip fades out and a sole editing credit appears: Cameron Diaz. The lights come up and there’s some applause, but mostly confused murmurs.
The ceremony has had a bit of a misstep, but nothing it can’t recover from, especially as the next category is announced over the PA, and it looks like the presenter is... Ross!

We have a break in the action and it looks like Darius Rucker has showed up to perform what he would have nominated for Best Original Song. The crowd is absolutely furious as he starts playing a song that apparently was in Trial of the Chicago Seven. An ocean of sonorous boos and curses overtakes the the once docile crowd. The Rock just ripped his chair from out of the ground. Jane Lynch somehow smuggled in a civil war era flintlock pistol that she’s now pointing at the stage! Suddenly, the crowd unifies around what started as a confident chant of one lone audience member - John C Reilly. It’s growing... Ja Ja Ding Dong, Ja Ja Ding Dong, Ja Ja Ding Dong - it’s like the macabre circus performers from Tod Browning’s Freaks, but instead of chanting “Gooble Gobble” they’re clearly pining for Darius to change his tune to the silly and delightful jam from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Darius, scared for his life, leaves the stage, but here come Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams to deliver the goods. Busy Philips and Michelle Williams burst into tears. Tom Hanks nods in approval. A segment saved by brave artists placating a toxic group of fans... we’ve just witnessed a live version of the Snyder Cut, folks.
Jack Nicholson seems completely unfazed, giving a thumbs up to the camera and blowing a kiss to the next presenter. Coming to the stage is... Ross... again...
Best Actress:
1. Jessie Buckley for i’m thinking of ending things
2. Carrie Coon for The Nest

Tumblr media
Jimmy Fallon has come out on stage to do a bit about the pandemic and watching movies at home. People are just absolutely not having it. He tries not to laugh at his own jokes while doing what I guess is technically a pretty good impression of Dr. Fauci interviewing James Corden as Martin Scorsese (the less said of this impression, the better) on what is or isn’t cinema. The bit doesn’t track and Fallon is absolutely tanking. The producers cut away from the stage to spare the viewers at home from this monstrosity. We see crowd shots of Millie Bobby Brown shaking her head in dismay, Colin Firth is simultaneously grimacing and trying to stave off laughter, Cynthia Erivo is texting, and director Tom Hooper is taking notes for his next film. Corden yells, “Carpool Karaoke! Remember?!” Ron Howard has fainted. This thing is almost completely off the rails.
Coming back to the stage is the next presenter, a clearly embarrassed... Ross! He’s in a total flop sweat, but stumbles his way through a joke about how Fallon should try co-hosting the Oscars with James Franco sometime. There are scant chuckles throughout a crowd that mostly just wants to see who won and go home.
Best Director:
1. Christopher Nolan for Tenet
2. Spike Lee for Da 5 Bloods
3. Steve McQueen for Small Axe
4. Kelly Reichardt for First Cow
5. Chloé Zhao for Nomadland
Honorable Mentions:
• Kitty Green for The Assistant

Accepting the award for best picture is none other than Eve, the cow actor who played the titular First Cow! The audience is enamored with how graceful she looks in her cow gown, and her speech, though indecipherable, is likely simple, observational, and deeply profound for those who speak cow.
Wow, what a ceremony! Hearts were broken, property was damaged, dreams were fulfilled... blood was shed? Damn it, Meryl Streep came in and mugged Charlie Kaufman before absconding with the trophy. Oddly, she’s a previous winner, so the attack isn’t out of need for hardware. People are reading through articles about production on Adaptation for potential motives. Streep made time for a photo opportunity, but remains at large.
Tumblr media
I could go on ad infinitum about all of these nominees and winners themselves and why they did or didn’t make the cut, but that’d be better served in a different piece. For now, my thoughts on most of these can be found on the Best of 2020 write-up and over on my Letterboxd. And, as always, these awards can be revoked and redistributed at will, so don’t get too cozy with that statue, Danny Bilson!
On behalf of the RAOGL (Rosscars Association of One Guy at a Laptop), thanks for reading, and stay tuned as we’re establishing a tip line for anyone has seen Ms. Streep or her stolen valor Rosscar. We’ll see you next year. Keep watching movies, and keep arbitrarily quantifying them in terms of subjective quality!
