In what way will Zena become powerful? 👀
Like, does she have powers of her own?
Zena does indeed have powers of her own. She has the same abilities that all Mundus Rimor have: to interact with the walls between worlds and use weak points to travel between them, as well as within a world (so, a bit like teleportation, except she and all the others can't do it like a blink in the air -- they literally have to walk/fall/jump/climb through these weak points, and they come out the other side. There's a lot more detail to this, but that can wait for the book). Mundus Rimor also have a certain skill with tracking (as you might have seen me demonstrate the start of in a draft), more in the sense that they have internal compasses and are tethered to the places of their birth which helps guide them (i.e. their own kind of true north). If magic is something that evolves in a species (well, I am my own worldbuilder, so I guess I can say it does), then this way to find home (and sometimes to track/find their own kind) is an evolutionary survival skill. But those are about the limits of that ability. I don't want Rimor to be able to track anything and everything, that just makes the powers too convenient, and there are also a number of rules for travelling between worlds, which are explained in Bones Of A God.
Because of certain decisions Zena makes throughout the series, her powers begin to manifest in a more rare fashion. The meaning of her full name, Zenaida, is a clue to that. It's not all that significant plot-wise, just something cool to look forward to!
Edit: also, most of her power is not in terms of, well, powers. These abilities are one aspect of her as a Mundus Rimor, and her eventual ability to wield weapons another, but power is also an interesting topic where Zena is concerned because, at one point, she has to cheat her way into it. More on that in the later books though ;)

Alien cultures have mythology too! Every civilization that humans have encountered within the Diaspora canon has a cultural history with some sort of mythological tradition –often multiple different mythologies, in fact. Sophontologists generally agree that while specific religions are not universal, evidence shows that the concept of belief systems (created to fill in the gaps of a culture's knowledge) is common to most sapient species. Some examples:
A certain ziirb culture, the Driizunn, once believed in a great deity representing order, wisdom, and protection. This deity, Nzmarri, became the namesake of the powerful artificial intelligence which now administrates all of ziirb civilization.
Like humanity, the shyxaure named the planets of their home system, Aelycah, after mythological figures. The chief deity of the Elashareyu, a prominent shyxaure culture, was the god of the sky, Haaçayor. However, very close behind them in importance were Vymara and Valimora: love and death. Those are the two constants of the world in Elashare myth; the compromise between the need of nature and the desire of the sentient being. Valimora assures the cycle of nature keeps going, while Vymara allows the most important parts of a person to exist forever in the flock: their family, their legacy, their love.
In the ancient rimor civilization of Ilen, the sun was embodied by a mother goddess named Alai, who made the world Volkh as a nest for her children: the rimor themselves. This belief helped to drive the rimor's pursuit of spaceflight as an instinct to leave the nest and explore on their own.
Unfortunately, we do not have very good records of the skgri mythos, just names from which xenoarchaeologists must derive mythological roles based on context.

“If you leave, we’re over.” Jungkook’s voice rang through the apartment, stopping Felix in his tracks.
Felix had been given the opportunity of a life time, opening for a famous group that was touring the US. Felix knew the risk of leaving, but his dream was calling.
“What’s your problem J?” Felix said, his voice filled with anger. “Why can’t you just fucking support me on this?” Felix turned to face Jungkook, forcing back tears. “Why can’t I do something for myself for once.”
Jungkook huffed, his dark eyes locking with Felix’s, “You fucking know why.”
“You know Jackson means nothing to me.” Felix yelled, his hand quickly brushing a tear away. “He’s just helping me with my music. I don’t give two shits about the guy.”
Jungkook took a few steps closer to Felix, stopping once he saw him flinch. Taking a step back, he signed softly. “I just don’t trust the guy…” Jungkook said softly, his eyes dropping. “Please Lix…”
Felix took the last few steps to the door, opening it before looking back at Jungkook. “It’s not about trusting him. It’s about trusting me.” Felix said, slamming the door behind. The sound of glass shattering inside as he walked away.
Look ahead there in the distance

The music blasted loudly in Felix’s ears. His eyes focused on the blurry trees as the bus drove down the highway. It had been two weeks since he left. Jungkook had texted multiple times, asking Felix to call and talk, but Felix always made an excuse.
A presence settled into the seat next to Felix, giving him a gentle nudge. “What are you listening to?” Jackson asked as Felix took out his earbuds. Felix shifted in his seat, opening his phone to show the Spotify page. “It’s from 2004, Walk Into The Sun by Dirty Vegas. It’s pretty good.” Felix said quietly, offering an earbud to Jackson.
The two sat quietly listening to music, Felix’s eyes focused back out the window as Jackson relaxed into the seat next to Felix. The touch of Jackson’s hand woke Felix from a light sleep, Jackson’s fingers had curled around the others. Felix’s eyes locked on their hands, and then to Jackson’s face. He seemed to be fast asleep, but his fingers gripped at Felix’s.
A lump grew in Felix’s throat. He couldn’t help when his mind started to trail, thinking about what Jungkook had said. How maybe Jackson did have other intentions. Felix did find himself bonding with the older male quite a bit during the last few weeks, but things seemed to be innocent for the most part.
The bus arrived at the hotel not too long after, and Jackson walked Felix to his room. “I’m right next door if you need me, ya?” Jackson said softly, his fingers gently brushing some hair from Felix’s face. Jackson stood for a long moment before placing a quick kiss on Felix’s cheek, wishing him a good night before heading to his room.
Once inside, Felix quietly sighed to himself before settling in for the night. It wasn’t long before he found himself outside on the terrace, wrapped in a blanket and staring blankly at his text chat with Jungkook.
When typing failed. Felix hit the dial button.
The silence on the other end was excruciating. Jungkook had picked up, but no one had spoken a word. "I think you were right." Felix said finally, feeling himself breakdown as the words left his mouth. "I'm sorry J. It was stupid for me to leave. Stupid of me to think this was just about music."
Jungkook sat silent on the other end, a bottle of whiskey at his lips as he chugged down another swig. "You're not stupid." He said finally, a long sigh escaping his lips. "We just...should have talked about it more, could have maybe figured something out." Jungkook's words were slightly slurred.
"Are you drunk?"
"Why does that fucking matter?"
"You know why. You aren't supposed to drink on your meds."
"Haven't been taking them."
"You're fucking joking. Tell me you are."
"No one's laughing Felix."
Felix bit his tongue to keep from saying something he might regret.
"Talk to me when you're sober, Jungkook. I need to get some sleep."
Felix hung up the phone before Jungkook could speak again and put it on "Do Not Disturb." He knew what state Jungkook was in just by his tone, and it wasn't a good one.
"Trouble in paradise?" Jackson's voice came from the terrace next to him, causing a small gasp to leave Felix's lips. Jackson stepped into the light, leaning over the railing with a joint in hand. "Not exactly paradise." Felix said softly, his eyes falling.
Jackson had invited Felix over to his terrace to drink and smoke. Felix declined at first but was soon convinced, wanting to take his mind off things. While Felix didn’t drink, Jackson had given him a couple of pre rolled joints to toke off of. It wasn’t long before the buzz set in.
“So, wait. You’ve been with him for 2 years and he doesn’t want to take it to the next step? Sorry man, I’d get out to it if I were you.” Jackson often lost his filter when he was drinking, tonight was no different. “I mean, if you aren’t in it forever; then what’s the point?”
Felix let out the smallest laugh, his finger tapping the ashe from the joint. “You’re not wrong, but we’ve been through so much together. It’s hard to part with that.”
“Don’t you miss that rush though?” Jackson asked, leaning toward in his seat, glass between his hands as his eyes focused on Felix. “When you meet that new person and you just feel…” Jackson let his words drag out for a few seconds as he caught Felix’s gaze. “Sparks.”
Felix bit his lip gently as the space between him and Jackson started to close, lips crashing into each other before Felix could realize what was happening. Felix hesitantly kissed back, his lips slowly moving against Jackson’s, who’s hand was cupped around Felix’s face.
A wave of guilt washed over Felix as he quickly pulled away, his hands pressing into Jackson’s shoulders to stop his approach. “I can’t.” Felix whispered, his eyes starting to fill with tears. “I’m sorry, I just- I need to go. I need to go home.”
Jackson pleaded with Felix to stay. Apologizing for the kiss and if he made him uncomfortable. Felix insisted it wasn’t him, that he had to fix things at home.
Thankfully, the tour was mainly focused on colleges within a few hours range of each other. Felix managed to find a rental car and hit the road for the 6 hour drive. Music blasting to keep him awake.
Lately I've been feeling different
Like I've come from outer space.
Had I known there's something missing,
When it's you I can't replace
The apartment stunk of alcohol, glass and paintings shattered around the room. Felix felt his stomach drop at the sight, quickly running through the apartment, yelling out for Jungkook. When he couldn’t find him, Felix quickly started to run to the basement storage area, where Jungkook would usually hide out and paint.
Felix slowed as he heard the grunts and paint slapping against canvas. Jungkook had headphones on, with the music so loud Felix could hear it. The paint hit with such force that it splattered the sheeted walls.
Jungkook caught Felix out of the corner of his eye, paintbrush dropping to the ground. Felix had tears streaming down his face, locked in place as his eyes focused on the painting.
A picture of the two, splashed with black paint. Another one similar, but with different colors. They said so much and so little at the same time.
The headphones hit the ground, and Jungkook started to run towards Felix, colliding in a deep passionate kiss. Arms tangled with each other as tears fell from both sets of eyes.
“I’m sorry..” the two said in unison, their foreheads pressing together, lips barely touching. Felix continued to kiss him, arms wrapping around Jungkook’s neck as he leaned up.
They fell back into the storage room, falling in a bucket of paint that kicked over in their steamy make out.
“Marry me” Jungkook said breathlessly.

The Parola Brothers
So, ignoring that these are the "modern au" picrews I made, here's some more side characters for the main universe!! (also. tracy's hair is supposed to be a different texture in the first pic but. picrews are limited! we make do with what he have.)
Knight-Seargent Anthony "Tony" Parola (2277/2287)
Scribe Tracy Parola (2281/2287)
These two are set to be pretty major supporting characters within the Brotherhood plot lines! I think they might get a side story that will feature them more as main characters to do with their time as Recon Squad Rimor, which is in my universe the first recon team to go to the Commonwealth! The one that did really well lmao
Tony starts out as a cocky hot shot with some really really bad hyper masculinity issues, amongst other things as a born and bred member of the BoS, and he's.............. just generally a LITTLE bit of a douche, who eventually. Does a lot of soul searching. And goes on quite the character arc.
Tracy has many of the same issues, but from a different end and it's a bit more of an internal struggle for him. However, being the younger brother and the one who had an interest to learn, he has a very different journey and reaches a lot of emotional milestones earlier than his big bro. He also was kinda forced to do a lot of internal examination earlier because... he was already doing it by examining his gender.
They both matter a lot for Leo's story and for generally the BoS story line and they have a very big place in my heart. Even if Tony is an idiot.
Here's some behind the scenes lore: OG Tony was planned to be "irredeemable" and than over time he just. Chilled out? Learned? And I wanted him to be a foil(?) to Rhys specifically since they'll be forced on a team together lmao.
The BoS effects this strange place where I love to make fun of them, get absolutely livid over most if not all of their choices, but I find them very fascinating to pick apart and write characters for BECAUSE of that.
Also, both Amy & Leo's original iterations were born and raised in the BoS and these two were made during that time period.

2022 - Crazy Year
We fired up the car, #stutely tapped the oil pressure gauge - then within seconds we knew the engine had run it’s bearings. That was Oulton Park. Expensive. And zero mileage.
Croft - I managed to abort this one. We hadn't planned to go, but we knew we needed to bank a race or two before the Finals meeting, where we have guests attending. Bizarrely, I had never raced at Croft. Three 25 minute tests, became three laps. Session #1 - spark plug lead broke up, misfire, I came in. Session #2 I stuck it in the wall on lap 3 😔 After clearing slow traffic, on my first flyer I turned in too fast to Clervaux, thought I would take a load of kerb to scrub off speed, then discovered Croft’s ‘sausage’ kerbs. By the time the car landed it was too late to brake sufficiently, ran off the track, skimmed the gravel - kaboom.
Saturday spent chasing down parts from all over - special thanks to Mike Gardner - plus a debt of gratitude to Enigma Motorsport, #snap and #(not)jesus, who somehow stitched it all back together ... spare nose on, then ...
Shakedown in the Paddock. Saturday afternoon. Rain spitting ... Unbelievable. #stutely managed to get the corner weights within 2KG - just by running up and down, annoying Marshals - bring the tyres to lock up point. Eventually both nipping up at the same time. This is impressive, guerilla race engineering.
Qualifying - massive misfire - car stopped on track. I had clearly fractured a wire in the loom somewhere. Just stuttered around for enough laps to qualify, before pulling up on the side of the pit straight. This is not going too well.
This is where Enigma excel - somehow they managed to rewire the car in such a manner they bypassed the broken wire. Clever. And resourceful. Shout out to #stalin (Richard Tarling) - always pushing hard to make everything better, without him and #jesus, I wouldn't even be on the grid.
Races - from P16, 10th and 11th - learning the track with each lap, and by the end, running a midfield pace, but all in all, performing well below the standard I set for myself.
And giving myself and the team an enormous amount of work to do on the run in to Silverstone ...
In racing, I remember from first time around, confidence is everything. And, you cannot short cut that ‘acquisition’ process, it’s all about seat time. I still don't have enough of that, and I feel a certain desperation creeping in to my driving.
The issue is, I know how it SHOULD feel. Time to dig deep ...
