Since the prompts for @zexalmonth are based on tarot cards (which is super cool) I thought it would be fun to draw them like cards too! I tried to emulate the stats in the Anime with the frame. Also I don't think anyone would want to but you could theoretically use them as a phone background because of the canvas size!

Todays Card is "The Empress"! I wanted to draw Rio, because she has one of my favourite Yu-Gi-Oh! Designs ever. I also like how she and Shark look related without being copies of each other. I debated wheather I should do color or black and white but I feel like it's more dramtic this way^^ I hope you like it! #zexal month 2023

I was making a habit out of crying. Twice in one fortnight. Or had it only been a week? As if the war I had waged against my emotions arrived at the final assault after a four-year impasse.

“How am I supposed to be a good King?” I didn’t know who I was snarling at. The painting? My father in the painting?  It was not as though paintings could hear what I was saying. “I’m supposed to hate you. But I can’t even do that right.”

Too much was happening and far too soon after my coronation. War was looming. Though the regents seemed to think I was paranoid or too young to rationalise such matters. At least, that was Master Redwinck’s claim. To which I asked if my youth meant I had misjudged his reasons for spending much time with a Lady other than his wife. If the circumstances were any different, I’d have properly enjoyed watching him match the red of his tunic. But no joke would bring my family back from the dead. They were gone. And nothing would change that fact.

The painting was made just a year before I had decided to partake in my grandest game of hide and seek yet. One in which nobody was seeking. My smile wasn’t genuine in the rendering. I had just been scorned by my father for giving stolen coins to a poor woman who was waiting at the gates of the Roving River in hopes of lucking upon some castle food scraps. I argued that I had done a good deed, that the woman would now have enough to buy dinner for a week. Apparently any good was negated by my stealing money from the treasury to start with. I didn’t see the problem. We had enough money.

Darius looked a bit strained in the painting. He always looked that way around our father.

But my mother’s smile brightened the painting in a way that colours never could.

I could taste the tears now, reaching out to touch the gold, embellished frame that preserved the moment on the grandest wall of the gallery. Had I not been sent away, I could have prevented their deaths, maybe spotted something amiss before it was too late. If I had been better disciplined, less rebellious, my family could have been alive today.

“If you were anything other than who you are, Carthya would have already fallen.”

Of course, because sending me away apparently kept our enemies at bay. I stilled then, like prey stalked by predator. It wasn’t me who had spoken, Kerwyn had. The voice so familiar that I ignored its implications.

Letting out a breath, I stole a glance at what appeared to be a tour for Mott, Tobias and Imogen. Though quickly turned back to hide the wet tracks running down my cheeks.

Kerwyn spoke again, “The truth is that, despite what you tell yourself. There was nothing you could have done.”

“You don’t know that,” I cut in, more bitterness in my tone than he deserved.

But he took no offence, “The truth is that you would have followed their fate.” Feet shuffled behind me, and soon a hand gently fell on my shoulder. “You have to accept that nothing could have been done.”

I could have been a better prince. I didn’t say it aloud. I just let another tear roll down my face as I struggled to compose myself.

I could have been a better son.
