Free Black History, Palestine, Socialism (and other) books on Haymarket
So, HaymarketBooks is a cool online bookstore that, while it does sell physical and digital books, it also offers a lot of free ebooks on subjects it thinks the public should be aware of.
Two categories I know of are Black History, after some racist law in the US that banned Black History resources
And Palestine, what with government media giving a super biased view of unfortunately
It’s in moments like these that we must turn to independent media and resource providers to educate ourselves on topics the government or other people don’t want us to learn about.
Now, here are all of Haymarket’s books they are offering for free, since their website doesn’t have a filter or sort by price option.
Here they are, 17 in total, as per 2nd Feb 2024 :)
Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions by Omar Barghouti, 320 pages
1989, The Number by Kevin Coval and Nate Marshall, 23 pages
Inauguration by Idris Goodwin and Nico Wilkinson, 23 pages
The Anti-Inauguration by Anand Gopal, Owen Jones, et al., 40 pages
Commando by E'mon Lauren,
Human Highlight by Kevin Coval and Idris Goodwin
1919 by Eve L. Ewing
The New Authoritarians by David Renton
Socialist Strategy and Electoral Politics
The Brother You Choose by Susie Day
Can't Pay, Won't Pay by Debt Collective
Black Lives Matter at School by Jesse Hagopian and Denisha Jones
Palestine: A Socialist Introduction Edited by Sumaya Awad and Brian Bean
Light in Gaza Edited by Jehad Abusalim, Jennifer Bing, et al., 280 pages
A Life of Activism by Howard Zinn, 81 pages
Our History Has Always Been Contraband Edited by Colin Kaepernick, Robin D. G. Kelley, et al.
From the River to the Sea Edited by Sai Englert, Michal Schatz, et al.
While their website is limited when it comes to pricing options, it's not limited with free books, so you don't need to enter a single financial detail to download these books :)
Note: I haven't read any of these books yet so the tags are just based on their book descriptions
Other places for more free books:
Liberation Library
On the colonization and ethnic cleansing of Palestine
Sudan guide, not an ebook, but #keep eyes on sudan #free sudan
Happy reading! :)

I hate to be a doomer, but if we don’t start using physical force, and start using it NOW, nothing will ever get better.
And you know what? It fucking won’t. Because Americans are total pussies and think politely saying “please” a bunch of times is gonna cause a completely uncaring genocidal government to stop wasting our tax dollars on the fucking apocalypse.
It’s like the police brutality riots suddenly made everyone afraid of “looking bad” in front of conservatives. Well, American conservatives are facists, now. So why do you care what they think of you?
FUCK. SHIT. UP

darlings, i want to again say thank you so much for the amazing influx of support i've received over the last week! it's been so motivating and inspiring to see people enjoying these templates and sending me the sweetest messages!
because of that, i wanted to drop a quick, cheeky little sneak peek at what's in store for the coming weeks: another soft romantic character bio, a WIPs priority list with a fun percentage slider, and then something the horror fans out there should hopefully recognize!

i vividly remember feeling extremely betrayed when cassiopeia reveals that she was using you in the 4th episode of her route. when i played it in the league client for the first time (which i miss so much, god) i became enamored by her, wooed by her perceived sensitivity and all the little pet names she'd give you. i was so sad when she revealed that it was all an act to get you to do her bidding for her. all these years later, i realize how fitting that was for her character. as the game so aptly points out, she is a literal snake. we should have seen her betrayal coming from a mile away. that final episode gave her character so much depth, and i now found myself even more drawn to her because of it, instead of feeling betrayed. i think that's just because my identity as a villain lover is far more refined now, but whatever. spirit bonds cassiopeia.

Concerning the Morgott post, I would agree for most of what you said! Or at least in the beginning, when Leyndell was still powerfull, but now? What force of civilians? All that is left is mindless nobles. The other political powers mentionned are scattered, with the dissident Perfumers having left for Poison Hell or other ruins and honestly all we see of the clergy is corpses. He didn't seem to have a problem leaving a whole side of the city to Misbegottens, why not the Omens?
Because I'm not entirely sure just how much of the city is actually dead, or if we don't see it because they go on lockdown relatively regularly. In the Ashen Capital, we see the ghost of a commoner who seems to be recently killed, so I can only assume that the vast majority of the people there are actually hiding in their homes most of the time while the army patrols the street. Leyndell has some pretty good defenses for a city post-Shattering, but it's not impenetrable, and the fact that it's so heavily guarded makes me believe that Morgott has all the vulnerable people on lockdown to prevent them from getting slaughtered whenever a Tarnished gets past his defenses. I mean, we see how easy they are to kill in Stormveil, and Morgott's a hell of a lot better of a lord than Godrick. In fact, iirc the only commoners that we see in Leyndell are either in the sewers (so probs escaped prisoners), or are guarding that twiggy cracked tear with an Omen soldier, so we DO know that they exist, they're probs just out of the way.
There's also the fact that the Golden Order views the Misbegotten and the Omen differently (even though the Omen are probably just the Erdtree attempting to make more Misbegotten, and failing miserably). The Misbegotten are allowed to have a side to the city of their own because they're viewed as lesser beings and are kept as slaves, while Omen are seen as cursed monsters that either need to be dead or as good as dead. So when you consider that, it's not too far off to assume that the soldiers themselves likely would turn on him if he commanded them to protect the Omen, endangering not only his life, but the lives of all of the Omen soldiers in the army and in the Shunning-Grounds. There's a lot more human soldiers than there are Omen, so if giving them better quarters infuriates the uncursed, there would be a bloodbath. It sucks, but the Omen of Altus really are better off either hidden away in remote sections of the army or locked in the Shunning-Grounds. Even dehorned and scorned, he can ensure that the Omen in the army are regularly fed and stationed away from battle, while the Omen in the Shunning-Grounds are placed in a spot so hidden and undesirable that most racist assholes aren't willing to try to go down there to kill them.
Also the perfumers haven't all left, they're all over the city- the ones near Miranda flowers are just gathering more ingredients for their perfumes. Their ability to heal and kill with powerful concoctions only they know gives them a lot of political power, and the presence of Omenkillers in their rank means that Morgott would do very well not to test them. They may heal the unwanted of the Golden Order, but they still uphold the status quo, and are likely very capable of either killing or driving him off the throne if he does something that displeases them.
So no, he is not in a place to try to go against deeply-embedded social prejudices, because trying to do so would place both him and the Omen of the city/army in the line of fire. Marika might be gone, but he's still trapped, all these years later

"Toronto Lawyer With A Gun In the Nanaimo Strike Riots," Toronto Star. September 4, 1913. Page 5. ---- Mr. James Roaf, Whose Son is a Mine Superintendent, Tells Thrilling Story of Situation During the Trying Days of August - Much Cruelty Reported ---- The British Columbia strike riots are brought close home to Toronto people by the arrival of Mr. James Roaf, the well-known Toronto lawyer, from the scene of conflict, where he, in the midst of scenes of the greatest excitement, patrolled in front of a house, rifle in hand, ready for any emergency.
The description of the situation which he found in the Coast Province is vivid in the extreme. The whole country about Nanaimo is in a state, of siege; men and women terrorized by striking miners; women and children forced into swamps and bushes, fired upon by mobs; armed men in constant watchfulness to protect themselves. their wives, and children; special police mobbed and soldiers riding through the country on trains loaded with maxim guns and rifles; these are some of the experiences which he related on his return from Vancouver where thousands of men are out of work owing to the labor troubles of mine owners and their employes.
"And yet there was no strike," declared Mr. Roal. The men walked out on August 12, and they didn't come back. They had no interview with the mine-owners. They didn't ask for more money or shorter hours: they had no complaint as to the conditions under which they were working. They just walked out, and then the terrible events which kept every decent man and woman in a constant state of suspense started, and lasted for one week. The mines have been kept idle for nearly four months."
His Son a Mine Superintendent. Mr. Roaf and his wife went to the South Wellington mines. which are five miles south of Nanaimo, to visit their son, James, who is superintendent there.
"On the night of August 12," said Mr. Roaf, "my wife, my son, and myself were sitting in his drawing-room reading and chatting. Suddenly we beard shouts and a cracking noise. I went out on the verandah, and saw two men running in a half-crouching position towards the houses They were both wounded, and we recognized them as two of the men who had been brought down to take the place of some of the striking miners. My son shouted to me: Take care of these workmen. And alone and unarmed he ran towards the mob. The rioters, we could see, were attacking those who had been working in the mine. We took the two wounded men and placed them in a back room, and prepared to defend ourselves. Rifles and revolvers were cleaned and loaded, and we prepared for the worst.
Mr. Roaf Armed Himself. "I found a rifle, and after making sure that everything was all right in the house, I loaded it and went out- side. I walked up and down the verandah with the gun in my hands. keeping up a steady patrol, and occasionally walking around the house. We could hear the shouts and cries of the mob as they attacked the workmen, and occasionally a shot would ring out. The night was cloudy, but at intervals the moon would shine through a rift in the clouds, and we were able to distinguish the forms of the fighting men, though their cries enough for us to were not clear distinguish the words. There was another mob in front of the mine office, and we could see by the flare of matches as they lit their pipes the fierce, blood-stained faces, and we knew what we might expect at their hands.
"One by one the workmen who had been assaulted came staggering toward the house, covered with blood. After a time the building became so crowded that it could hold no more, and we had them lie down behind the verandah railing, while we stood guard with the guns about the house. While we were patrolling up and down, one of the workmen. badly wounded, with his face and head terribly beaten, came toward the house, half-carrying, half-dragging, the unconscious form of his wife. We took her into the house. and gave her stimulants until she was finally revised. 'My children: Oh, my children! My God, what will happen them?" she cried in anguish.
Children Huddled in Room. "My son inquired the location of her house, and about midnight started out for the children. He found the poor little things, four of them, huddled in one room with no clothing but their night things, while down on the verandah he found the mate of the children's father, covered with blood. his clothing torn to ribbons and his face beaten to a pulp, lying unconscious.
"Somehow he managed to drag him to the house, where his wounds were dressed, and he was put away with the other wounded men. The house had been wrecked; furniture smashed, windows broken, piano chopped with an axe, and the trunks and drawers forced open, and their little savings and personal valuables taken.
"I had been patrolling the house and grounds with the rifle for some time, and was relieved by the mine carpenter while I went inside to try to comfort the women and children. The house was turned into a regular hospital, and to make matters worse the electric lights were shut off by the mob, and we were forced to stumble about in the dark until we could locate candles, lamps or anything that would burn.
Said They Were Threatened. "Several of the working miners had toid me that day that they received notices to quit work or they would be blown up with their children by dynamite and their homes burned to the ground.
Two of the miners who had been chased from their homes and fired upon were forced to hide in the swamp all night. A farmer who lived in the neighborhood had taken one of these men into his house, attended to his injuries, and was keeping him in hiding there. In some manner the main body of the mob learned that the injured mine worker was hiding in the house, and a crowd of five hundred surrounded the house. They called to the old man and told him that if he didn't surrender the miner they would burn his house, then blow him up.
Old Man Had Nerve But the old fellow was game. He got his gun, and bringing it to the window of an upper storey he pointed it into the mass, and told them that if they didn't get away from his house he would kill as many as he could before they killed him. His nerve saved him. Cowed by his determined attitude, the crowd broke up, and the old man stood guard over the miner until they all moved away. Then we learned that 200 men, special police, were on their way by boat from Vancouver city, and I immediately telephoned for assistance. Fortunately the mob hadn't cut the telephone wires, and we were still in communication with the city. The police at Nanaimo told me that as soon as the boat docked they would Push a special train to the mine with the special officers. He also said that a detachment of special officers, 200 strong, had been beaten up by the mob.
Eluding the Mob. A little later we got a message from Victoria to bring all the women and children to the railroad station; that the authorities were running a special train up to the mine 80 that wounded men and their wives children could be taken. We were afraid, however, to take them down to the station, as the mob had made it their headquarters. We deliberated for a while, held a little council of war, as it were, and decided to telephone to the city and have them run the train up to the colliery, load the wounded and the women and children on the train there, and thus elude the mob who were waiting at the station. The train came to the colliery, and we were able to get the folks aboard without molestation.
Beat Up Men Who Quit. Then the men who had continued working decided to quit, and, even after this concession, as fast as they left the mines the mob would seize them, four or five to each man, and the workman would be severely beaten up before they would let him go. My son stayed at the mine, and I. with the women and children and those who had been injured, went up to Nanaimo. When we arrived in Nanaimo we found a crowd of about 1,000 rioters waiting at the station. "They gathered about the train and seized every man who looked like a miner, and despite the efforts of the police, grabbed them and beat them until they were almost unconscious.
Revolvers For Camera Man At the Nanaimo docks there was a mob of fully 3,000 rioters waiting for the boat with the special police officers to arrive. Previous to this boat carrying 30 special police officers arrived from Vancouver city. but the rioters refused to allow them to land. Every time they would start down the gang plank, the mob would rush at them and force them back on the boat again.
"Then the boat came in sight bearing the 20 special officers. The rioters were ready waiting for them. The chief of police told me that he knew positively that over 400 of them were armed. As the boat approached the dock, a tourist who was standing near the gangway levelled a camera at the mob and took a picture. This seemed to infuriate the strikers, and in an instant there were 400 pistols levelled at him demanding that he smash his camera. or suffer the consequences. The chief of police obtained the consent of the miners to go aboard on condition that he secure the film and destroy it. This was done.
Fired On a Woman. "The trouble had also affected the Extension mine, which was near the South Wellington mine where my son was in charge. Mrs. Cunningham, wife of the superintendent of the Extension mine, was forced to walk five miles through swamp and undergrowth from the mine to Nanaimo. During her trip she was fired upon several times, but managed to reach Nanaimo unharmed. At this point an automobile was secured, and the party consisting of the wives of the officers of the mine drove to Ladysmith, a little town a few miles away.
"The Mayor of Nanaimo, I understand, was asked to call out the military, but at this time, it is said, he did not consider it necessary and refused. A temperance hotel, where some of the mine workers had been staying, was blown up by dynamite. One of the mine workers was also made the victim of a dynamiting outrage and had his right arm blown from his body. The rioters blamed the man himself for the accident, declaring that he was making a bomb to throw in their midst when it exploded.
Paper Did Not Publish. "By this time all the mines in the district were empty. The Nanaimo Herald proprietor received letters from the rioters threatening to dynamite his building and the paper did not come out that day. All the mine buildings had been wrecked. Expensive machinery destroyed and the little homes of the miners burned to the ground. One woman with a week-old babe in her arms was forced to flee from her home in the middle of the night and alone and unprotected made her way into the swamp with the builets of the rioters' rifles falling all around her. Nanaimo at this time was practically under control of the mob.
Soldiers Quelled Trouble. The Friday following the soldiers started to arrive. They took possession of the mine buildings and immediately placed several of the mob leaders under arrest. It was a common thing to see a train with a flat car in front on which was mounted Maxim guns manned by artillerymen riding through the country distributing ammunition to the soldiers. With the soldiers in charge and military rule established, things began to resume their normal state. The men went back to work. The injured were recovering, and the miners were returning to work. When I left there. things were in pretty fair shape again, concluded Mr. Roaf.
[Great ruling class propaganda, and typical of the bourgeois press coverage of the Vancouver Island coal strike of 1913.]

Getting a PHD literally anywhere else: Wow! Congratulations! What a great achievement! Amazing!
Getting a PHD in Gotham: Wow! Amazing! You're now on several Government, Civilian, and Bat watchlists.
So if any of the Wayne kids get a PHD, then the entirety of Gotham would be squinting at them suspiciously. They're rich, so resources, and most likely already insane with all the shit they pull.
What I'm saying is if Jason went and got himself a Doctorate in Literature, the whole city would anticipate the appearance of his villainsona called the Dead Poet(emphasis on the dead) or Bookkeeper or something else similarly nerdy and themed like that for sure.
I just know that it would turn into some Gotham inside joke with memes abound, and everytime Jason would, I don't know, give more funding to the neglected Arts Departments in Gotham University, or go to a school for read alongs to encourage kids to read, Gotham social media would go crazy and be like:
"The Dreaded Villain Dead Poet Reads Alice in Wonderland to Children! How Despicable!"
"Villain Dead Poet Lambasts Government on Banning Books! Leads Librarians to Riot!"
"Dead Poet Ramps up his Villainy by Establishing Educational Programmes in Crime Alley! Uplifting the Poor! What a Dastardly Villain!"
"Dead Poet Goes on Live Ranting About his Favourite Books! Favourite Author is Jane Austen! Is this the Feminist Agenda?"
And so on! It's a meme that refuses to go away. His siblings actively participate, and make the situation worse.
Dick held an online Gotham Villains and Anti-Heroes Poll and Dead Poet came out on top, over Red Hood. Jason is an actual Gotham crime boss, but his crowdfunded villainsona is more popular. No he's not salty about it at all.
Duke would create a montage of Dead Poet sightings.
Stephanie would make a Dead Poet meme compilation.
Tim would arrange Wayne Enterprises to donate to local libraries after allegedly being threatened by the heinous villain Dead Poet. (Jason did ask Tim to do that but not like that)
Barbara created an extremely popular Villain Watch account for Dead Poet.
Cass tweeted out Jason's favourite books as the villain Dead Poets reading list telling people to avoid them 'wink wonk', causing a massive uptick in the sale of those books ala Bigolas Dickolas.
Damian of all people tweeted out a pic of Jason playing with Alfred the cat accusing the evil villain Dead Poet of attempting to kidnap his cat.
And thats not to mention all the shenanigans they pull in their batsonas.
God bless Gotham and it's home grown, organic, not even remotely ethically sourced, free range chaos.

...people with ADHD have trouble with attention. This means they have trouble focusing and remembering things. They may take longer to process information or have trouble sitting still. Many are unable to manage distractions, both externally by things in their environment and by being derailed by thoughts...Let’s say a person has problems with executive function (getting started on tasks), a reading disability, and can’t sit still. It’s no wonder they don’t want to read! If everyone’s brains were set up this way, reading would probably look completely different.
