Chapter 56 - A Guardian Reawakened of Heaven Has A Road But No One Walks It is up! :D

It was still dark when he woke up, but this dark had stars in it.

Song Lan stared at them for a long time, every last part of him feeling strange, wrong. Like waking up wearing clothes that didn't quite fit the way they were supposed to anymore, or that suspended moment of stubbing a toe or touching something scalding where you knew it would hurt but the pain hadn't really gotten there yet.

Someone was curled up beside him, head rested on one of his splayed-wide arms, holding him tight.

He closed his eyes again, letting himself drift a little.

They had fought horrifying monsters, he dimly recalled, but if Xingchen was here next to him, was all right, then everything was fine and he could rest a little longer.

His side hurt like nothing had hurt since his first death, in a way that wasn't really hurt at all, more an odd, numb soreness that managed to feel utterly wrong and uncomfortable while still not really being anything so familiar as pain. Considering that he was fairly certain he had in fact died, again, the discomfort wasn't all that bad.

Dp x Dc writing idea

So I’ve seen a few that revolve around body swaps so angst idea…

Danny has been held captive in GIW compound for a while and is kinda losing hope a bit. He comes back after a brutal experiment and is just laying in his cell talking to the other ghosts in the cells around him to keep his mind off the blood slowly leaving his body. Starts talking about his life before the Fentons, his Mother and brother and the League. He makes the off handed comment of “you know I really miss my twin, I wish I could see him one last time” and of course Desiree a few cells down hears this wish and thinks, well this is a great way to get out of here if I spin this right. She snaps her fingers and Danny blinks.

Next thing he knows he’s sitting at a dining table with a nice half-eaten meal in front of him. The fork clatters on the table as he drops it. The rest of the table looks at him.

“What?” He tries to process what is happening.

“Damian?”

Holy shit, is that Father? Wait- Did he just say Damian? Danny lunges toward the closest reflective surface he sees, a serving plate, and tosses food across the table as he lifts it to see his reflection. Yep, that’s Damian’s face last time he remembered.

“What is your problem, Demon Brat?” A guy a little older shouts.

“Fuck.” The whole table freezes and stares at him with wide eyes. He doesn’t even care as the panic sets in. “Fuck, shit, fuck, motherfucking, oh my- FUCK!”

The server makes an awful sound as it drops back to the table.

“No. No no no no- fuck! This wasn’t supposed to happen. This isn’t what I wanted.”

“…What’s happened?” Father asks slowly, obviously noticing that he isn’t Damian.

Danny zeroes in on him, eyes wide with panic. His hand shoots out to grab Bruce Wayne’s shirt in urgency. The rest of the table react in defense until Bruce raises a hand to stop them.

“Father, we need to save Damian. Desiree fucked with my wish and switched our bodies. We have to go.”

The man stares back with confusion and contemplation.

“Who is Desiree?”

“She’s a genie. She was captured, same as me. She has to grant any wish she hears, but Damian doesn’t know that. We need to go rescue him and make Desiree change us back.”

“Who are you?”

Danny huffs because they were wasting time with all these questions. Damian is surely hurting in Danny’s body.

“Danny. Formally Danyal Al Ghul. Damian’s twin brother. And he’s probably in a lot of pain right now so if we could go that would be great.”

There is a stunned silent until Danny starts pulling on Father’s arm to stand and get moving.

“Like now.”

Honestly it's a bit surreal any time the OVA goes completely off script and just starts doing its own thing but I think the episode that is the most surreal out of context is probably episode 3. This one sequence in particular always makes me think 'what the fuck am I watching' but in a good way?

Like instead of the [REDACTED] that was happening in the manga storyline the OVA just has four solid minutes of uninterrupted footage of The Gang running around on an extremely atmospheric abandoned ship alongside two admittedly endearing Speedwagon Foundation OCs. Nothing else happens, they're just exploring a cool set piece and it's spooky and mysterious.

It's like the screenwriters and storyboarders were just like 'hey what if Team Joestar were just exploring this huge dark abandoned area together would that be tight or what lmao' and then they went and made it real through the collective power of an animation studio. Imagine being able to just go and do that.

The TV show Mary and George premiered in the UK and has gotten some good reviews which reminds me that i read The King's Assassin by Benjamin Woolley, the book it's based on, back over Christmas break and I should stick my thoughts here for posterity so I can compare later

So the political machinations and scheming and gay drama in the court of King James VI and I is some really interesting history and I have to say I did enjoy reading the sections that are just really wild historical anecdotes (George Villiers and James's son, Charles, go on a TRULY wild road trip to Spain in an attempt to secure a match for Charles that has a truly comedic and jaw-dropping number of ridiculous problems and I had a fantastic time relaying that story to many people)

It seemed clear to me that Woolley did his research—there is an extensive list of primary sources included at the back and his understanding of how James’s favorites played into the broader political and religious maneuvering of the time is very thoroughly laid out (there is a LOT about parliamentary meetings and promotions and papal dispensation)

What I thought was weird about how the book is advertised is that the title and description HEAVILY emphasize that Woolley has new cutting-edge evidence to prove that George Villiers assassinated King James which is a) not actually a huge part of the book (literally the epilogue, maybe 20 pages out of almost 300) and b) not…that convincing?

Certainly there’s a LOT of ruthless behavior done by the Villiers family and the political environment of the time is one in which assassination, even of the king, is totally on the table, but Woolley’s new evidence is that he…described the situation to a forensics expert who said he thought James had been poisoned while being treated for malaria? That’s it!

And like, cutting-edge medicine of this time literally included “smearing brick dust and oil on the king to cure him of gout” so I’m not convinced that James wasn’t just killed by a bunch of 17th-century physicians just not knowing how to treat malaria TBH

Also how do you even get malaria in 17th-century England…?

I think when you’re analyzing the death of a king from the 17th century you can’t really rely on forensics to prove he was murdered because you can’t exactly do an autopsy, and I think if Woolley wanted to convince me that Villiers murdered the king he should have backed it up with some solid analysis of why Villiers would have murdered the man who raised him up from a backwater noble second son of a second marriage to one of the most influential men in England and the most Woolley managed was “well maybe George Villiers and Prince Charles liked the vibe of how monarchy functioned in Spain [a country they were in active conflict with at this time so I feel like would not have been a role model??] and murdered James together so they could create a new monarchy” which is literally introduced in the final paragraph of the book (that is a very silly way to organize your argument)

Also I was unsatisfied by how Woolley analyzes the queer aspect of the history he's discussing

It’s not that the book no-homos the relationships between King James I and his “favorites,” because Woolley does clearly understand these relationships were romantic/sexual even if these men were both married to women and had children with them, but the book seemingly has no interest in analyzing what it means for the king of England and Scotland to have fairly public relationships with men in a country in which sex between men could be considered a capital offense punishable by death and I was frustrated by the fact that Woolley simply doesn’t touch on how the relationships and historical figures he’s discussing in his book fit into queer history, it seemed odd to not touch on it at all??

Also, this book taught me that the novel Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston is incorrect for saying that King James met George Villiers at a jousting tournament! That was Robert Carr, James’s previous favorite who Villiers replaced (George Villiers met James I because he was a cupbearer at court).

My ultimate analysis of the book was that I think the history it's drawing on has the possibility to make a REALLY fascinating TV show but I thought the book was not improved by some weak analysis of James's possible assassination

Also, I am very excited that Julianne Moore's Mary has a high billing in the TV show and seems to have a lot to do because I found her a very fascinating historical figure (she tried to steal bales of wool from her second husband to sell for her own profits and when she was caught just said she needed the money to pay off debts!), but she basically drops out of Woolley's book once George is instated as the king's favorite

If this show is good I am going to be so annoying about it and I'm not sorry

The problem with BOTW is that it's obnoxiously popular in the LOZ fandom to the detriment of other games but also unfortunately it's genuinely really really fun to write fanfic for.

#it really hits that perfect fandom balance of good but not THAT good you know #its base is really interesting and you can do a lot with it. there's a lot of freedom to be had playing with its characters and concepts #contrast and compare to Link's Awakening which imo has a way better story and is my most beloved zelda game #but also like. what do i even have to add. how do i write fanfic for it when it has such a great bookend #like i don't even really want to do AUs or change the ending #the reason I like it are the Themes(TM) and changing the story too radically or changing the ending risks losing that #don't get me wrong i can and have written link's awakening fanfic. i am writing link's awakening fanfic right now #but it's a lot harder to come up with concepts bc it already does such a good job with all its stuff #on the other hand botw does not utilize its story potential much yet establishes enough it's fun to expand on #so with link's awakening i'm like ok. how do i put marin in Situations this time when the game's already the best Situation she could be in #and with botw i'm like 'so here's three different link and zelda role reversal AUs' #'this is the one where zelda is transmasc' #'this is the one where urbosa is fighting ganon link is dead and riju and zelda are on a roadtrip' #'and this is the one i'm planning a 40k hubris fic for' #being a fandom hipster is all fun and games until you like something popular #at least i still don't care much about link #my posts #loz #botw

Chapter 57 - Life, Death And A Bottle Of Wine of Heaven Has A Road But No One Walks It is up! :D

On the seventh morning, a bird sang in Dushou for the first time in decades, life returning to the dismal ruins along with a hope of healing, or at least of peace.

Xiao Xingchen had spent all his free time the past week wandering the ruins, tracking down any remaining pockets of… not ghosts, nothing so violent or tangible – just lingering memories, whispers of horror and grief. He’d performed endless liberation rites and pacifying ceremonies, allowing the last vestiges of broken spirits to disperse and move on.

It had gotten easier once the other two recovered enough for Xue Yang to accompany him at times – he had an uncanny knack for sniffing out the lingering dead, both spirits and half-buried remains. Zichen joined them after another few days, albeit still having to move slowly, leaning onto him at times.

Xue Yang seemed satisfied enough with the rate of Zichen’s recovery – though he still stayed draped half on top of him every night, pressing a fistful of talismans to the stitched gash even in his sleep. Xiao Xingchen suspected that might have less to do with healing, though, and more with Xue Yang taking every chance to sleep curled up with Zichen, but carefully refrained from saying so, or smiling too blatantly at the arrangement.

They seemed comfortable enough.

The disaster trio has finally worked through a lot of their issues, and grown closer than ever. Sure would be a shame if something happened that put all that to the test... 🙂

This is the longest chapter so far in the fic at a massive 13k, and also marks the shift into the final arc of the story - still a long way to go, but now we're on the home stretch!

Going into this, I was quite nervous introducing certain, ah, new elements (those surprise guest stars in the chapter illustration) though I did end up having lots of fun with it in the end!

Do you have any fun facts about the algebraliens in your AU? Not just Four, X and Two but what role do the others play?

UMMM...hmm. question i might just have to make up a bunch of stuff on the spot for alkfsdklf.

they're like around? but not too involved with the drama. theyre probably like, background characters that just show up in some classes occasionally.

i did have the thought that four and nine would 'date' very briefly, mostly just a fling-- just a weird unlabeled thing where they kiss sometimes. four is mostly just looking for someone that like worships the ground they walk on. they dont really become friends there but later down the line probably ...(dont know if this'll even be included though)

everyone in the subscriber short specials kind of pair off with each other in groups, for example like nine and six are probably friends in HS/going through their own thing during the gay fourx stuff.

and later they all just end up being around each other enough to sometimes meet up. but this is like when theyre all adults. growing up they arent /really/ in four's life. and most of the focus is on four so askfsd

there are probably a few of them who have talked to four briefly and four kinda forgets them until they see each other again (ten for instance, probably.)

in hs four might view fourteen as like this inferior, not-as-intimidating-as-me number that tries to be scary but isnt. (later he respects the skin munching grind) (the school might have a problem with algebralien skin being lost sometimes, though...)

but i DO think a lot of them are friends with X, and by being around X four might see them a lot?

think like, while the four two and x stuff is happening, they're all kind of going through their own things with each other; its just all in the bg. so like if i wanted to, i could probably make up a bit of a sidestory for some of them, like fourteen and fifteen (but that is way too many characters to pay attention to rn aksjfsjk) (i can't imagine how the tpot writers feel cos how do u balance all of those characters and keep track of everything they go through)
