The white-haired rounin was sitting by the rocks, his crimson hues focused on the scenery as he rest behind the maple tree. Beside him was Tama, who took a liking and decided to loaf on his lap as he had returned from his trip to Liyue.

It is rather rare to see him come back, even after that day.

Raising his bandaged hand, Kazuha lowered it to gently caress her fur, making her purr and sink even more. It was oddly nice, Kazuha mused, to pet Tama and let his mind wander.

At least... Just for a little bit.

Though, he did stopped for a moment. This made Tama turn her head, already letting out a soft 'mrrp' out of confusion.

Why did Kazuha stop all of the sudden?

"..."

The rounin seem to be staring into the scenery, an unfamiliar look in his eyes. Though, before he could continue petting, he sniffed on something... Odd.

Hm? What is the wind carrying? Such a sweet scent, and yet...

His mind began to grow hazier as he let the scent sink in, though it didn't took long for Tama to get up and run from where he was sitting. Concerned, the rounin stood and tried to go after the running feline, but his legs became jelly by whatever he smelled.

It proved to be more and more difficult to catch up to the cat, and even moreso when the scent seem to grow stronger and more potent.

"T— Tama..."

He raised his hand for a moment, perhaps to try and reach out to the cat, though he was on the verge of collapsing.

"Don't.. leave..."

And that was the last thing he said before collapsing, the last thing he can only see was the running feline who seem to have never heard his pleas.

How will the warlords (mitsuhide, masamune, kenshin) react when MC show off her skill? I thought about this when I was playing mitsuhide route. I start to imagine how he would react if MC volunteer as a stage performer during their mission together. I only write this to get this headcanon out of my head and done.

Mitsuhide

-Geisha kitsune dance + chinese classical fan dance

-When you saw mitsuhide's performance you were inspired to perform a mix of traditional geisha kitsune dance and chinese classical dance.

-You grabbed his kitsune mask and a fan.

-Because his curiousity beat his worries, he just let you take the stage after him.

-Your dance was graceful and smooth, but then your movements gradually turned more bold and energetic.

-Mitsuhide never expected his pupil and fake wife (soon-to-be real wife) hide such a lovely talent as a secret.

-"my my, it seems my little mouse never cease to surprise me."

-"is that a blush I see on your face, mitsuhide😯?" "it's a make up😊" "...it won't hurt to be honest once in a while, you know?"😒

-Kenshin: "sasuke, is she your sibling?😑" Sasuke:"no, kenshin-sama. We just came from the same hometown."

-He may be cold and indifferent at first, but he is weak against persistent people. Especially if that person also is also soft and cute just like a bunny or like you.

-One day you showed him your sword dance to prove him that not all women are weak.

-Your graceful yet powerful movements managed to struck him in awe.

-Kenshin: "hm not bad." You: "✨expectant look✨" Kenshin:"....what is it that you want now? Just say it." You: "hehe actually the first moment I saw you I was wondering if you could teach me swordsmanship. I want to improvise my sword dance." -Kenshin: "and that's how you fling your sword in the air while also taking the enemy down."

So sorry if Kazuha and I hadn't returned to Inazuma- the rounin asked me about Dragonspine, and since I had a few commissions to cover there, we both went there! It's still as cold as ever, but it's a lot more manageable now that we both had supplies for the frigid weather.

Speaking of which, Kazuha is currently checking the Frostbearing Tree. He said something about the calls of nature being different with it... Whatever it means, but he's having fun. I think it'd be great if you came along when we come to Inazuma to visit again!

Ah, speaking of which, there's this missing person's case that's hidden in the mountain. Calx told me about the adventurers that came here and mentioned that to me on my previous visit. Do you think you can take it? I think you'll be able to crack it down, and especially with Kazuha joining in, hehe~

I had been re-reading Shinsengumi Imon Peacemaker, a.k.a the prequel to Peacemaker Kurogane, and it really fascinates me how Tetsunosuke’s arc was laid out from the beginning.

At the start of the manga, Tetsunosuke wants to become “strong”, but his definition of strength is physical strength, he wants to be strong to take revenge for the murder of his parents - but then he finds out that killing people it’s not in his nature at all. Everyone in the Shinsengumi - from Hijikata, Okita and Yamazaki - tells him that in order to be part of them he has to throw out his humanity and become a “demon” (oni). And that fuels his conflict through the story. His late father’s words, “I want you to become a big man”, echoes in his mind and he takes it as proof he needs to become physically strong and have the courage to kill the murderer of his parents. At the end, as we know, Tetsunosuke confronts the murderer, Yoshida, but doesn’t kills him, and from that he makes a vow of never kill - a vow that he keeps even in the middle of a war. All because he always had empathy for all people, including his enemies - this is shown in that chapter where he confronts Okita for killing a rounin from the Choshuu. Despite his own personal grudge against Yoshida, he doesn’t generalizes all the other side as “evil” either, and this is reinforced pretty much in the current arc in Aizu.

But a thing that’s also fascinating to talk about is how Tetsunosuke isn’t the only one who changes, his actions and words impact other Shinsengumi members in a way that doesn’t feels preachy nor forced. The biggest example is Yamazaki Susumu, who was raised as a shinobi and such believed he shouldn’t express emotions at all, and when confronted with the brutal murder of his older sister, couldn’t process his grief until Tetsunosuke helped him and told him that it was okay to feel sad and cry, that he didn’t need to throw out his emotions in order to be a warrior, and that if he could help someone or do something about it, he needed to act. The same lesson was later passed onto Saitou, who upon that could only helplessly wait for his companions to face their fate while knowing their futures due to his premonitory abilities. However, we see that his actions and words affect even Okita, and I think that’s something that hasn’t been talked enough: Okita, the same one who told him that if he wanted to be strong he had to kill, at the end is the first person who aknowledges Tetsunosuke’s vow of not killing before he even makes it and kills Yoshida in his stead so Tetsunosuke wouldn’t had to get his hands dirty. He’s the first person who respects Tetsunosuke’s choice, even if at the beginning he told him that if he really wanted to be in the Shinsengumi, he had to be a demon.

You can say the Shinsengumi warned Tetsunosuke about their job as ruthless killers, and Tetsunosuke accepted that, but in turn, he also sparked humanity in some of their members that needed it the most. I think that is the point where we can say that Tetsunosuke’s actual strength, wasn’t his physical prowess - even if he becomes a quite skilled swordman in his own way - but his great empathy and it’s once he comes to embrace that he finally shows his actual skill as a warrior. Notice how it wasn’t revenge what at the end triggered Tetsunosuke to attack Yoshida, but seeing Okita badly injured at his hands:

At the end, Tetsunosuke recognizes that, more than drive for revenge, what he hated the most was his own helplessness for not being able to do anything to save his parents, so he’ll now fight to protect those he cares about. Eventually, his big empathy would be a key component in his later development, as he stays at Hijikata’s side when the man is at his lowest not only out of loyalty towards him, but because he saw how much he was suffering after the loss of Kondou and couldn’t abandon him just like that. Let’s not forget that this is the first time that Tetsunosuke saw Hijikata, who’s usually stern and serious, completely vulnerable:

So he becomes Hijikata’s emotional support during his recovery, which indeed deepens their bond more than what already was. In fact, in chapter 89 Hijikata aknowledges that separating himself from Tetsunosuke is similar to re open a wound, even if he has to do it for the boy’s own good.

People may wonder (and Sakamoto Ryoma even asked it inside the manga at some point) why Tetsunosuke, such an empathetic soul, would chose to be with a squad of ruthless warriors? And it’s a good question with a simple answer: Tetsunosuke’s loyalty is one who is deeply personal. He’s not loyal to ideals, but rather to people. He sticks with the Shinsengumi not because his shares the same ideals as them, or because he agrees with their actions, but because they are his found family who helped him to grow up into the man he is now - and in turn, he left an impact on them with his actions and his kindness.

As I once talked to a friend, Tetsunosuke’s main drive for his actions, I’ll dare to say more than duty, always has been love. Love for his parents, whom he wanted to protect. Love for his companions who became a second family to him. Love for his girlfriend that he wants to protect, as we have seen in the recent chapters where he chose to remain in Aizu to protect Saya and the rest of his allies until they are safe so he later can rejoin Hijikata in the North. More than honor or revenge, for me that always has been his biggest motivation.

They use 三一侍 (sanpin samurai) which yeah pretty much just means the lowest rank samurai, so that’s why I kept the three in with “third-rate.” And they use 御預浪人 (oazukari rounin) which is yeah pretty much what I wrote of a contract ronin. This is probably the most liberal translation I’ll do just because this is really historically heavy vocabulary that even the average Japanese person wouldn’t know off the bat, so I found it to be really extra info for an English reader. Even the original manga put in notes to explain what these two words were.

“Well ain’t that just too sweet of you to say, Souji!”

He literally says “Too sweet, Souji!” to where I looked at the previous page and confusingly wonder what he meant by that. When I looked up that type of phrase of “甘すぎる” it’s used literally like when food is too sweet. So I guess he meant that what Souji said earlier about Miyuki-dayu is too idealistic and sweet.

“I am ordering you to stay in that mistress’s house so maybe you might actually learn how terrifying women can be!!”

They use the word 妾宅 (shoutaku) which yeah is a word for the house that a mistress is kept in. Leave it to Japan to have a word specifically for that lol. Japanese grammar wack and the sentence was more literally something like “Women are terrifying creatures, you’re going to stay overnight in the shoutaku and study women.”

“Toshi worries too much.”

It uses the katakana for Toshi, but provided the furigana as あいつ aka 彼奴 aka “that guy.” I kept it at Toshi since that’s obviously referring to Hijikata, and Kondo is obviously very close to him so it’s not weird for him to say that. I just thought that was interesting.
