Goodnight, John. - Goodnight, Paul.
We all love the Get Back moment 'Goodnight, Paul - Goodnight, John'. Let's see where did it come from. As we know, John and Paul loved The Goon Show etc. One of this scatch show was Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, an American sketch comedy TV program, hosted by comedians Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. The first episode aired January 22, 1968. The show was characterized by a rapid-fire series of gags and sketches, many of which were politically charged or contained sexual innuendo. The co-hosts played roles of straight man (Dan Rowan) and "dumb guy" (Dick Martin).

After more short sketches leading into and out of the first commercial break, Rowan and Martin would walk in front of the show's homebase set to introduce the show and have a dialogue, generally consisting of Martin frustrating Rowan by derailing his attempt to do a proper introduction via misunderstandings or digressions.
You may say, and what? Just a moment :)
At the end of every show, after a final dialogue, Rowan turned to his co-host and said, "Say good night, Dick", to which Martin replied, "Good night, Dick!", leading into the final Joke Wall segment, in which the cast popped out of their doors and told jokes to the camera, each other, or Rowan and Martin, who stood in front. This would lead into and continue under the closing credits. One final batch of skits, including a closing appearance from Owens, and often an appearance from Arte Johnson's character, German soldier Wolfgang ("veeeeery eeenteresting!"), brought the episode to a conclusion. (info from Wiki)
So, our lads make show ('mach schau').
John hear Michael says to Tony Richmond, the head cameraman, 'Say when, Tony', and reacts: 'When, Tony. Goodnight, Dick.' Paul jiffy-quick digs it and answers: 'Goodnight, Dick.' And starts to tell some anecdot: 'Did I ever tell you about a hangover, man?' John: I don’t think I want to hear that, Dick. G— Seems like John is going to say 'Goodnight, Dick.' But Paul cuts in and say: 'Goodnight, John.' And John instead expected joky 'Goodnight, John.' answers 'Goodnight, Paul.' Paul insists and replicates Laugh-In words: 'Say goodnight, John.' But John says again: 'Goodnight, Paul.' And Paul laughs: 'Goodnight, John.' and begin to sing Two Of Us.
The same show they make January 14th, 1969:
JOHN: Ooh, the Queen of Sheba wore falsies. RINGO: [mock-surprise] I didn’t know that! JOHN: Didn’t you know that? You weren’t there at the time. [pause] Cleopatra was a carpet manufacturer. RINGO: I didn’t know that! JOHN: ‘Cause you weren’t there at the time. [pause] Edgar Allen Poe was a shithouse. RINGO: I didn’t know that! YOKO: What was John Lennon? JOHN: A patriot. [Yoko laughs] I didn’t know that. [laughter] JOHN & PAUL: “Goodnight, Dick.” [laughter] JOHN: [sighs] That was Lennon and McCartney. Northern Sheds. Great Western Railway. PAUL: Songs for all functions. JOHN: Ross-Upon-Wye. PAUL: Nige-Whalley-Mange. JOHN: Ilford two, Western Middlodeons – terrible.

Round 1 poll 24: Casey Murphey from the 2019-2020 Florida Mock Trial case: “State of Florida v. Casey Murphy” vs Gladys Ormphby from Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut:
Casey Murphey
I have a lot of obscure mock trial blorbos but I’m going to start with Casey Murphy because I think they best encapsulate the depths of weirdness some of my blorbo relationships with these characters can get to. So to start, I have never been enrolled in a school in Florida. Or even anywhere near there. I visited a few times as a very little kid, but my schooling has been in the Midwest and the Northeast. I also was not remotely involved in high school mock trial in the 2019-2020 school year. I only know Casey Murphy because I used to be part of an online mock trial group that picked up the case a few years later. In fact, I took Casey as a witness as a joke because I had also been a defendant named Casey in the case we did before State v. Murphy. But Casey is my tragic scrungly. The autism took hold on them. BASICALLY they were a slightly “below average” kid grappling with the huge academic expectations their family had. Specifically, there was a college (Southern Coastal University) that their family had been going to for generations. But when Casey applied, they got waitlisted. They managed to make it in right before the school year started, but they were put on probation because of the short notice. A few weeks into the year, though, Casey was talking to their older brother Patrick (basically their closest friend) and they find out about a secret society called SCU Underground that their family has been in since it was founded. Originally called SCU for Change, it was a student activist group. They learn about some shady things happening at the school and how SCUU planned to combat it by holding a protest bonfire. Patrick invited Casey to the next meeting, and Casey was very excited to prove themself. Later psychological testing showed that Casey was among the most easily suggestible in society, so it’s clear that this was important to them. Here’s where things get unclear. All we know for certain is that Casey bought lighter fluid and vodka (likely using a fake ID considering they were only 18) from a liquor store. They brought those things, along with their laptop, in their backpack to the meeting. There was an argument which ended in someone named Cal Robbins storming out of the old student union building which the meeting was being held in. Then, the building burned down, and Casey came out later than everyone else before being arrested and confessing to burning down the building. The prosecution’s claim is that Casey brought the materials to burn down the building to prove their loyalty to the cause. They might have been influenced by Patrick to do it, but either way they actually committed the act. The defense’s claim, which I find more compelling as a story, is that the lighter fluid was to show that they were prepared for the bonfire, the vodka was as a peace offering considering that they were a new member, and the fire was caused by a projector overloading the old building’s power. Casey ran back in to get their laptop so they could continue their school work, and also didn’t know the layout as well as the returning members, so they came back out later than everyone else. Then they were arrested, treated poorly, and were coerced into a false confession because they were lead to believe Patrick would be found guilty if they didn’t. It’s all just so sad and angsty to me, especially seeing as they were found guilty at the trial I did so I always mentally fill in them being falsely imprisoned at the end. They just wanted to prove themself to their family, to step out of their brother’s shadow, and this is where it lead them. Also here’s my playlist lol https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2ccMwC9xV83ddZoANpejE1?si=nGtWp7MvS7WXJEWLMrBNVw Also also, like most mt witnesses, no canon gender or pronouns which is very cool of them
Gladys Ormphby
From a show that’s over 50 years old. Extremely powerful as she beats guys with her purse when they offend her, yet has a perpetually gloomy demeanor. In most circumstances she’s the personification of “I love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!” Sometimes she is allowed a little scrap of dignity as a treat and it’s so much fun to watch. Gladys is quite flirtatious, has a quirky sense of style (some would say, lack thereof), has no sense of personal space, and really really loves chocolate. Despite her seemingly being so bland, every one of her appearances in her source material somehow has a silly surprise to offer. She was also featured in a very short lived cartoon series, Baggy Pants and the Nitwits. In conclusion, “though she be but little, she is fierce” - vote for gaslight gatekeep girlboss Gladys!!!
