The older I get the less I care for copyright. Things like copyright, trademarks and patents *should* be there to stop the little gal from getting screwed over by people stealing her work, but in reality it's used by big corporations to squeeze money out of anyone who so much as mentions their brand name. Oh, so you used a 3 second clip of our music in your hour-long video essay? We can now take all the ad revenue from that video (none of the money goes to the actual artist, of course). Oh, you showcased my brand/film/TV show, basically providing me with free advertisement? I also get all the revenue from you, as 'punishment' for not doing it with my explicit permission. Even though my brand name and everything associated with it is basically so ubiquitous that it may as well be public domain.

Oh, through horrendous and ruthless anticompetitive business practices you've made your brand name synonymous with a certain activity, item or genre of entertainment, perhaps even giving yourself a monopoly over that industry? You're so embedded in the culture that you may as well be public domain, you may as well be owned and run by the state. Let's all make google a verb, everybody!

Disney have literally changed copyright law so they get to hold onto their precious mouse for even longer, pharmaceutical companies hoard patents to get money from life-saving medicine, but youtubers have to abide by fair use laws when talking about pop culture, and people can and do face severe legal repurcussions for pirating, or even providing the option. Did you know if you're detected pirating your ISP can lock your upload/download speeds without warning? Meanwhile literal public services like the royal mail, national rail and london tube are provided by private corporations - what fucking right do you fuckers have to any corporate protection at all? You're providing a public service, you should fucking belong to us.

I've admittedly not delved too much into the history of copyright, but my suspicion is that it's built from the ground up not to protect the creations of individual people, but to give existing powers legal protection. Some choice quotes from the history of copyright wikipedia page:

pfft the first copyright laws literally established 'monopolies'. Copyright law ostensibly supports the intellectual property of the average Jane, but it's primary purpose has always been to control the populace and preserve power structures.

“I know that Uncle Benny would rather have peace. If you could offer a cessation of hostility, combined with our freedom to trade, and the return of all Continental seamen impressed into your navy or in your prisons, I believe that he would accept.”

Sir Lional frowned deeply. “I am sure that you are right. Unfortunately, I cannot do that without approval from the Royal Palace. That will take at least month, and probably more. The mere request could cost me my post. If I do not, it could be the end of England. I will request the terms that you offer.”

A Green Jacket Lt. came up and tugged at my sleeve. “Lt. Tecumsah, you are urgently wanted by the President. Please follow me.” I bowed to Sir Lional and made my way through the crowd, back to the Presidential Mansion.

The throng was now much reduced. As I looked about me, I realized that only the officers of the Maryland, her submariners and a few others were present. Mr. Smollett and some of his most trusted workers, President Arnold and a few important Senators of the War Committee made up the whole balance of the folk in the room. Marines had closed the doors and were keeping out everyone else.

“Gentlemen,” said Mr. Arnold, every inch the President, “We know that England will not stand for what has happened. King George will strike back, hard and soon. I expect that the blow will fall in two places. The islands of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are both vulnerable and would serve as an invasion base for an attack down the St. Laurence to Lake Champlain or Lake Erie, cutting the nation into unequal halves. The other likely place would be Chesapeake Bay, with the invading army pressing Northwest to link up with the army at the Great Lakes. Such an attack, if successful, would destroy the Nation.” As he gestured over the map, we could see that he was still the general who had out-maneuvered and out-fought the British in the War of Independence.

“I expect the blow to fall just as I have described it, sometime in the early spring, as soon as the weather will allow a determined foe to risk the crossing. They will probably be willing to accept some losses to strike sooner. Our hope lies in the fact that the submarine thrives on rough surface weather. Four and six man picket submarines with new periscopes that can be turned through a wide angle have been made and are yet being made. These are heavily armed boats that can attack swiftly, near to four knots I am told. Mr. Smollet has the details of these craft and those who need the particulars will be informed by him in detail.”

“Do ye want the model now, Sir?” Smollet inquired.

“Indeed I do. Show the gentlemen what you have wrought.”

Smollet gestured and two of his most trusted helpers carried in a half model of the hull of a craft like none that had been seen before. I counted the station lines, as Smollet had taught me so many years ago, in the Academy. This monster was just over 100 feet long! The ragged intakes of breath from around the room told me that others had realized the same thing.

With all of the pride of a new father, Smollet began to point out the features of the new ship. “This is a wholly new idea in warfare. We have christened her the Kraken. As many of you noticed, she is 110 feet long. Her draft, on the surface is 21 feet, 6 inches, when fully laden. As you can see from the model, she is very narrow, with a beam of just 20 feet. The odd looking things on her sides near the bottom are a new design water jet that pushes near half again as hard for the same effort on the walking beam.

“As an aside, all of your old boats are being fitted with the new water jets and the new periscopes, too.

The Kraken can cruise at three and one quarter knots, under water. On the surface, she cruises at just under four knots. She carries three retractable masts, and under sail, with a favorable breeze can do six knots. She can tack only 40 degrees off the wind, with good speed.

She crews eighty men. It is possible to draw air down the center mast while submerged to 30 feet and using the mast as a periscope. Range finding is now done using the fore and aft mast periscopes, giving a triangulation base of 60 feet. A sextant attachment can be fitted to either of the periscopes, allowing navigation while submerged. She carries two attack boats that can launch or dock while the Kraken is fully submerged.

“Newly designed flood-valves can take her from full sail down to periscope depth in under four minutes. Her sails can be managed from inside the hull and can be stowed while under water, if necessary.

“At this time I will not speak of her arms stores, which are considerable. The Kraken’s performance is not speculation. She has just completed her sea trials and is now awaiting the choice of her new captain.” He grinned at the stunned silence that had greeted his laconic announcement. “Are there any questions?”

“I have one,” I stated. “Can the Kraken carry enough stores to reach England while submerged?”

“Yes,” was the terse reply. “With enough left over to return after three weeks in English waters.”

President Arnold said, “The Kraken is even now laying at a secret dock, taking on stores. As soon as her Captain is chosen, she will stand out to sea under secret orders.”

Commodore Marks said with envy, “The command of the Kraken will go to one of you submariners. The choice is being made by representatives of the Senate War Committee. They have all of our logs and records to study. We are awaiting their decision which we will have soon.”

We all looked at each other, dumbfounded.

ISAO TOMITA, the Japanese composer who pioneered the use of electronic synthesisers in music, recently performed his Future Space Fantasy at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The music includes themes from Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Tomita, dressed in a white jump suit and surrounded by synths, computers and giant video screens, looked like a gleeful schoolboy in his bedroom playing with his electronic toys.

But how many in the audience knew about the legal wranglings that lay behind the concert?

In 1977 Tomita recorded an electronic version of The Planets, which shot to number one in the US classical music charts. But Holst’s estate in Britain hated the idea of this electronic tampering, and won a court injunction banning release in Britain.

Holst died in 1934, so his music all went out of copyright in 1984. But in 1995 a new law from Brussels extended European copyrights by 20 years, apparently putting The Planets back under cover until 2004.

But lawyers then found a loophole in the new law. It made no provision for extending injunctions as well as copyright. Imogen Holst, who fought for the original injunction, has died. So Tomita is now free to do whatever he likes with Gustav’s music.

So, when a deposed and fleeing princess arranges a meeting to give him a package to keep safe, he was reluctant to take it. But she convinced him to hide the royal seal until she needed it back despite himself. Unknown to him, she had also ticked him into carrying another precious cargo. When Johnathan learns of the trick, he’s furious. When he confronts the princess about it, he learns it’ll be impossible to return it before it’s appointed time. Then she tells him of an unbreakable bond between them and ends a long search for someone he had lost as a boy. So, instead of revenge, he does what he can to help her. He must also avoid capture; the King would execute Johnathan if he ever found out about his secret cargo.

Also, if audiobooks aren't your thing, it's available here on Amazon as a Kindle or a paperback book. I am the editor, reader, author, artist, musician and singer of this video. I did everything. I would have liked to use some royalty free music, but I couldn't find any that I didn't have to pay for. So, I made do by making my own. The art is limited, sorry about that. I haven't done a whole lot of illustrations yet and I just used what I had on hand already. At least there is no risk of copyright issues. Everything is original. WHO IS TARTAN COMPOSER?

THREE BIG DISAPPOINTMENTS IN MY LIFE

#1 Missing out in Hull (England) on a tea-chest chock full of toy soldiers, tanks, aeroplanes etc (all made by Airfix). A young lad, a neighbour next door beat me to the path of a lady who beckoned us down to the back yard...oh well, ho hum!

DISAPPOINTMENT NUMBER 2

#2 Again in Hull, out with my older brother who lived there at the time. I spotted a toyshop and in the window was a model kit of the (at the time) famous children’s TV series by Gerry Anderson (God blesss ‘im!) FOREBALL XL5!!! I couldn’t believe it. Anyway, after much annoying coaxing and pleading, my brother bought it for me...great so far!

HERE COMES THE DISAPPOINTMENT!

At home I eagerly opened the FIREBALL XL5 space rocket model box and searched for the crew, Steve Zodiac, Robert the robot and the lovely Venus. to my utter dismay, disbelief and chagrin, was a plastic parachutist soldier with an attached colored plastic parachute and NOT the XL5 crew!

MISREPRESENTATION, BIG STYLE!

Talk about the trade description act! On the box lid was a full size, full colour version of the rocket with the crew, hurtling through space. In actual fact, the rocket was rather dull looking, plain grey plastic with transfers (decals) that needing soaking in water and then stuck on to embellish the rocket. ah, c’est la vie!

#3 I SHOULD HAVE STUDIED MUSIC!

The Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama was t’THE’ place to go in Scotland to study music and the arts. It was akin to RADA and the London School of Music! My big mistake and regret was I plumped for THEOLOGY instead of music??? However, I gained my degree and took up teacher training at the famous Jordanhill campus and therefore qualified as a teacher in RMPS (Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies).

I always had a talent for music and it was not until years later, that I was in work and attended a local church, only to find out one of the parishioners was in fact the HEAD OF MUSIC COMPOSITION in the RSAMD at the time! I got to talking to him and told him of my compositions, songs tunes etc and he said post them to me at the RSAMD, which I did within a week or so, I received a reply saying how he had listened to the material and he felt I had a natural bent and talent for composition and encouraged me to take up the course.

All said and done, by that I had a family to feed and had to work full time and even now I could kick myself for missing out on what could have opened alot of doors of opportunity to me. However, I had to become an auto-didact, learning from countless books and CDs...now of course You Tube has a load of instructional videos, but then, there was no private turtors in composition, which was my forte. I’m still learning but it hasn’t stopped me from producing various orchestral/other genre works. The learning is my passion, as is creating music.

Feed them their favorite food to please them. - Full crafting and cooking lists. - The Kingdom holds doorways to new Realms like Toy Story, Lion Kong, etc and you do tasks to get the characters to move into your Dreamlight Valley. - When a character moves in you build their unique house and can place it where you want. - Fishing can be done in any water source, ripples will show to improve your chances and they have rarity colors. - You can move all aspects of the world around. - Recipes can be found and earned but you can also stumble across them by combining ingredients yourself at the stove. - Each character has a friend level (up to 10) and you build it by hanging out, doing their quests, and bringing them their favorite item/food. Each level you get a reward. - Earn exp from doing everything and level up to increase your stamina bar and get rewards. - Find jigsaws and picture pieces randomly in the world. - You can dig anywhere, sparkly bits guarantee you find something. - Mining spots can give random gems, if they are colored then that's the gem you get. - Everything you do uses stamina, eating and going to your house replenishes it. - Play how you want. - A living world. - Save when you want, it does autosave and the save now button lets you know the last time the game was saved. - An absolute time killer. - Very in-depth open-room content creator. - New events get rolled out throughout the year. - The story and how it allows everyone to exist and make sense is great. - Moonstone is the premium currency. - Battlepass type system for events with a free and paid-for set of rewards. - Quest management lets you track what you want but they split the quests up into friendship, story, and Realm. - The collection is split into Dreamlight Valley, all areas, and Eternity Isle (DLC) and each category has a completion percentage. - The map lets you see each character and see them moving around in real-time. - Dreamlight is the currency you earn from doing many tasks and these are passive so you do them without realizing it. They range from simple things like talking to X amount of people to more in-depth ones like preparing five-star meals. They almost act like achievements. - The DLC has its own set of Dreamlight tasks but instead of earning Dreamlight, you earn a new DLC-only currency Mist. - Scrooge has a shop that has stock that changes every day, online people can join your town and buy from your shops. Disney Dreamlight Valley Review Cons: - The tutorials are not great. - Not a fan of the fact that the DLC is the same gameplay loop of the base game as in having to rebuild Scrooge's shop, the other establishments, the mist is just Dreamlight, etc. - Some of the longest load times especially the I initial load, one of the longest. - Bad performance on the switch, a lot of slowdowns, and screen tearing. - The game has its good days and bad days, during bad days prompts won't show, items won't spawn, characters disappear, and more. - The descriptions of quests are not clear. - Bad mission markers. - Characters use the same set of lines over and over. - Weather-reliant tasks suck. - The multiplayer is not great, it has so many limitations. - In-game purchases with moonstone. - Had a lot of crash to dashboard errors. - No way to turn off all the over-the-top flashes and dazzling effects. - Grinding for particular materials is a real pain. Wind overheard him say, “At least he did not open the cases, try to do all the work and present you both with all the business ready to sign!”

Midnight chuckled, “That was only two centuries ago! The Baron Thurwood incident!”

Tia added, “Right. Remember Thurwood's defense? Mere mares obviously could not handle Vital Affairs of State!”

They settled down and began to play again.

With the fair beginning the next morning, they called a stop early.

After a good breakfast, Hanar invited Wind to help her in her booth, selling her fabrics. She entreated, “I know that you promised to help watch over the Sky Dancers, Wind. I set my booth so that you can see their crowds. I could really use the help.”

Wind was able to watch the crowds that came and went as the Sky Dancers did their first two sets. She kept hearing ponies commenting on her unusual appearance and supposed prowess. “I think that they made up that story. I mean, look at it. Only one foreleg and it stands up on its hind legs. How strong or fast could it be?”

She was laying out one of Hanar's satins on the measuring table when she noticed the near transparent glow of a unicorn trying to keep his magic stealthy! Her leap out of the booth passed over one of the ponies disparaging her abilities! She hit at a flat out run for the stallion, dodging or leaping over any pony in her way!

She jumped to his back and grabbed his horn, claws out! She raked down to his forelock and lunged for his muzzle! She grabbed and pulled his head about!

He collapsed under her, landing on his side, kicking feebly! Wind jumped free as he fell and yelled, “Medic!”

Black Lotus came charging out of the dancing pavilion that she shared with her mother! She had her field medical case carried in her magic. To the surprise of the onlookers, she skidded to a stop and took Wind into her magic!

In tones both desperate and worried, she called, “Warrior! Are you safe? Is the Rage under control?”

Wind, actually shaking from fear that she had seriously injured the pony, replied, “I am OK. It is under control for now. See to the pony.”

Black Lotus set her down and let her magic suffuse into the neck of the fallen unicorn. In a relieved tone, she said, “Just a sprain that is putting some pressure on his spinal cord. I have pushed the bones back into position. Could you please pull gently on his head? There, that is just right. The pressure is off entirely now.”

At that point, a blue uniformed Royal Road Police pony came cantering up. He obviously recognized Black Lotus because he asked her, “What has happened here, Mam?”

She gestured at the fallen unicorn. “You heard about the double murder of the Sky Dancers, last fall? This fellow just tried to murder their children on the morning of their first public performance. He was watching them and trying to gather stealth magic.

“Warrior Wind was helping in the fabric booth of Hanar Na Kili when she saw it happening. She ran through the crowd and jumped to his back. She raked his horn badly enough that he will need magical pathway surgery to be able to use magic again. She pulled his head around and he collapsed.

“His neck got a fairly bad sprain that temporarily paralyzed him. Between Warrior Wind's help and my magic the sprain has been fixed. He should regain mobility in about a half hour to an hour.”

The Royal Road Policepony turned to Wind. “You got from over there to here in time to stop him? Impressive. If you had already raked his horn, why did you twist his head?”

Wind shrugged. “I am not from a place where there are any unicorns. I never had to disable one before. I did not know for sure that his magic was disabled, so I turned his head, trying to spoil his aim.”

The RRP cop was adding to his notes. “I see. In the excitement, you pulled hard enough to sprain his neck?”

Wind shrugged diffidently, “I was just trying to shift his aim, so I didn't try to pull hard.”

Black Lotus interjected, “She does not look it, but when Wind was allowed her harness for Pulling, after her physical battle wounds were healed, she proved to be stronger than any horse of our band.”

“I get it. Spraining his neck WAS a gentle pull. Let's get this jerk to the RRP tent and forwarded to the jail.”

As Wind made her way back to Hanar's booth, fair goers parted for her like magic! Many had seen her sprint and take down of a unicorn. The quiet buzz that she overheard was no longer filled with doubts. Especially the bullies among them wanted nothing to do with a creature that could fight like that!

As the day passed towards lunch, Hanar offered, “Wind, I could go to the camp and bring lunch for both of us. If you wanted, we could both eat here.”

Wind looked up from counting coins for a length of lace trim. “That would be good, Hanar. What about our customers, though? How will they react to my eating meats?”

Hanar wrinkled her nose playfully, “Oh, the scent? I will bring you some of those pasties that don't drip. They don't have much odor, either. If I hurry, there will still be some of the blackberry pie to split.”

“Blackberry Pie? What are you waiting for? Sunset? Food! Food! Go get it!”

Snickering, Hanar got.

Lunch, when Hanar returned, was actually excellent. Besides the pastie, which was a lovely trout one, she brought Wind another bread bowl filled with scrambled eggs and cheese. And of course, a big container of the Rom black tea, along with two mugs for it. The blackberry pie was the perfect topper for the meal.

Down the way, far more respectful audiences were watching the Sky Dancers. There was still some quiet buzz about Wind's recent take down of a unicorn.

She and Hanar had several customers who, more than the cloth, wanted to see how a creature like Wind, standing on hind legs and with only one foreleg could handle bolts of cloth and accurately measure them. The dexterity of her hand and how well she managed without any apparent magic was a source of constant curiosity and wonder.

Overall, the fair was going quietly. The music of the Rom was everywhere. There were buskers out. Most of the Rom foals had a blanket spread out and played their favorite instruments, often in groups of four, with three playing one of the several types of lyre, the Rom's cleverly made drums and usually a flute singing over the rhythm and strings. The last one of the group would be doing one of the Rom's many dances to the tune played by the others.

Rose was busy selling her many clever and beautifully made boxes. Her husband, Myest, was selling some beautifully made but extremely functional forged iron work. Besides kitchen knife and tool sets, he had fine harness fittings, blades for scythes, wood carving chisels and many other useful things.

Across the midway from Hanar, was the booth being run by Tia and Midnight. Midnight's Munchies, the banner proclaimed! The long lines told better than any crier that the booth's fine fried and baked treats were worth more than the mere copper and silver charged for them!

In fact, the scent, wafting across the way was making both Wind and Hanar hungry! Again.

Wind observed, as she sheared a length of fabric for a customer, “Aside from that one jerk earlier today, I have not seen any ponies that are even rude.”

Hanar smiled as she made change for the cloth, “Most ponies are actually quite nice. The ones that we mostly have any problem with are the ones who run the towns. Becoming officials seems to select for the ruder and meaner ones. I am not sure why that is.”

Wind grinned back, “They have to stuff their shirts with something! Egos full of hot air sound like just the ticket!”

There came the drumming of small hooves on the run, coming from the foal's play yard. A colt charged by, a filly's bonnet in his jaws! Behind him was a filly calling out, “Give me back my bonnet, Charley!”

Wind leaped past the counting board and had the colt by the neck, pulling him to a stop! She said softly, “Yes, Charley. Give her back her bonnet.”

The filly yelled, “He's my brother! Don't hurt him!”

Wind looked up mildly, “I haven't hurt him, just stopped him.”

She took the bonnet from the shivering colt and handed it back to the filly. The filly looked at her bonnet and cried, “You ruined my nice new bonnet, Charley! It has your big old teeth dents in the brim! How am I going to save up enough to buy another one before Hearthwarming?”

Wind looked at the bonnet and was reminded of how clever Rose was with her hoof magic.

Charlie looked down and scraped the sod with his hoof in an ashamed way. “I didn't mean to ruin your bonnet, Sarie. I was just messing with you. You can have my allowance if it will help. I got eight bits, most of a silver. Won't have nothing left for the fair, but I owes you.”

Wind made up her mind. “You both come with me. Might be able to fix this. Don't know for sure but it never hurts to ask.”

They found Rose, in her booth, but proudly watching the latest Sky Dance. When the Dancers alighted from their last set, Wind showed Rose the damaged bonnet.

“Charley was just playing around and did not think. He grabbed his sister's new bonnet and ran off. When he did, it caused these tooth marks in the rim of it.” Winking and making a sort of pass with her hand, she added, “I thought that you might have a smoothing iron in the back. Don't know if you can, but could you maybe fix Sarie's bonnet?”

Rose nodded thoughtfully. “I am not sure if any of my smoothing irons will work but I will look to see, Wind. Watch my booth while I am in the back, please.”

Wind settled herself behind the sales board, inviting the youngsters to sit in the shade of Rose's awning.

Charley offered, “I hopes that she can fix Sarie's bonnet. I know that my eight coppers ain't enough to buy her a new one but I owes her.”

Wind nodded agreement. “You do, Charley. Glad to see that you know it, too. You are a good credit to the ponies that raised you.”

A quiet voice joined the conversation, “Glad to hear that. Don't really hear it often enough. My son's a good colt, but sometimes impulsive.”

Wind looked up at the butter yellow earth pony with a neatly roached mane of light red. She smiled and offered, “Show me a youngster that isn't and I will show you a colt that's not worth much. Charley has offered all that he has to fix Sarie's new bonnet that he damaged. I hope that Rose has a smoothing iron to fit and that she can do it for free.”
