University Research Survey on Architecture in Video Games
Hello there!
My name is Nick, an architecture student working on academic research for architecture in video games. For my research paper, I am working on exploring the cultural significance of architecture and environmental design in video games.
The purpose of this survey is to collect data to be discussed for a University course. Data will be discussed in the form of statistics with the exception of quotes from the open-response questions, which will be quoted anonymously if used. This survey will not take more than five minutes to complete. Reblogs would be highly appreciated, this topic means a great deal to me an any help would be also be appreciated! Thank you!

i saw this by eddventure and the only thing i thought was about the adam millard video on the same topic and how they interact, so i am proposing a new model, interaction and results
interactions
ally to ally
ally to scenario
ally to enemy
enemy to ally
and results
damage(or win condition)
action economy
positioning
information
now, this seems very standard if you saw the 2 videos except action economy, which comes from this design doc video on status effect, and i think this encompasses everything nicely, i am not in a good state of mind, so i don't know how to develop what i am saying, but i liked the model and i wanted to share, if you have any question i will answer... pls talk to me

Realm Architect funding now includes native support
Tumblr media
Realm Architect virtual tabletop RPG game passes Linux Stretch Goal to join Windows PC. Behold the enchantment before your eyes, brought to life by the masterful developer, Realm Architect. The Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign is certainly doing very well. Realm Architect is here to help Linux players who play tabletop role-playing games. Such as Dungeons & Dragons, create their own worlds and play in them online. It's like a virtual playground where you can move your character and interact with friends. This tool is made to be super easy to use on Linux. So even people who don't have a lot of technical skills can create their own fantasy world. All you have to do is drag and drop different elements onto the map. Such as trees, buildings, and characters, and they will appear in your world. Realm Architect passed the 50,000€ goal and with that: Linux Support (as well as Android & iOS).
We passed the €50.000 threshold and with that, our first stretch goal! Realm Architect will be coming to iOS, Android and Linux 💪 Thank you #ttrpgcommunity, for helping us get there. On to the next one, which gets a little... 𝖎𝖓𝖘𝖆𝖓𝖊 🦑#TTRPG #TableTopGaming pic.twitter.com/64ExBtpq3Z
— Realm Architect | A worldbuilding VTT! (@Realm_Architect) May 9, 2023
It's not just easy to create your world, but it's also easy to keep track of what's happening in the game. For example, the VTT software can keep track of how much health your character has left. Also what kind of effects are affecting your rolls. So you don't have to remember it all yourself.
Realm Architect Kickstarter
kickstarter
Another great features for Realm Architect is that it's not just about creating a single map. You can create a whole world on Linux with different maps that are connected. So you can move from one place to another seamlessly. It's like creating your own little universe. If you don't want to create your own world from scratch, that's okay. Realm Architect has a bunch of pre-made content that Linux players can use, made by experienced game masters and publishers. You can choose from different campaigns and adventures. So that players always have something new and exciting to play. The best part about Realm Architect is that it's customizable. That means you can change the look and feel of the tool to match the theme of your game. For example, if you're playing a horror game, you can make the software look dark and ominous. If you’re interested in trying it out, you find a Free Demo on itch. This is a Windows PC build, but you can run the Unity 3D Demo on Linux via WINE. Realm Architect virtual tabletop RPG game is a great tool for Linux and Windows PC players. The Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign is obviously doing very well. It's already becoming a hit among experienced game masters and newcomers.

So I was joking around on this post about the lack of alignment in Baldur's gate when a shiver ran down my spine. My badtake senses were tingling, and lo and behold there was this waiting for me in my notifications:
Tumblr media
Now this is fascinating because this user obviously has an axe to grind: We were specifically talking about a notoriously clunky and contentious ruleset in d&d that no one really likes, not even the current developers, and this person decided to go off like I was the architect of the modern godless age.
Checking their blog shows we're dealing with someone with some baggage, as what appears to at first be your bog-standard cocktail of conservative cottage-core and LOTR memes gives way to Jordan Peterson clips, antichoice rhetoric, and more than a few posts that veer into Q-Anon nonsense.
What leaks through most however (especially if you're like me and spend a lot of time examining the whys of ideological brainrot) is that despite how much this person wants a peaceful life in the country what they REALLY want is to die for a righteous cause: Their blog name is a biblical reference to mass death and the punishment of the wicked, they're WEIRDLY invested in the final charge of the Rohirrim, and simmering below the pretty pictures of forests and mountains and animals and guns is the sense that the world is an evil place and the only thing that's going to fix it is a cleansing wave of violence.
Tumblr media
Normally I wouldn't go so in depth like this but I thought since we were talking about morality systems and where they might lead us it'd be a good idea to get a read on where this criticism is coming from.
Now onto my rebuttal: My desire to see the alignment chart left behind along with other clunky rpg systems like Thac0 has no bearing on my real life stance on morality. You shouldn't NEED a fantasy rolplaying game to tell you that you're objectively good in order to soothe your IRL moral anxieties and you going off like this when I suggested changing something tells me that this is a bit of a safety blanket for you.
The fact that you can't tell the difference between a story with no moral compass and one that allows for diverse opinions on what could be considered "moral" tells me that you're terrified of doing the wrong thing and that makes you easily exploited by people who cloak themselves in righteous authority and call you a good boy for wasting your life in their service. I was like that too once but let me tell you it's far better to question who decides what rightness is than to follow it blindly.
Lastly, on the topic of morality codes in rpgs, I'm not against characters or the stories they're in having morals, I just think it's silly for there to be only nine codified (though extremely contradictory) options for how those morals can be expressed. Why hold onto a system that's too flawed to be useful ?

Article: 'Exclusive: Connie Booth, One of the Chief Architects of PlayStation's First-Party Studio System, Is Joining EA'
Veteran executive spent more than 30 years at Sony before her departure in 2023.
Excerpt:
"Former PlayStation executive Connie Booth, one of the chief architects of PlayStation's first-party strategy before her unexpected departure in 2023, is joining EA to help lead its studios amid its ongoing restructure. Booth's title will be Group General Manager, Action RPG, with a portfolio that will include EA Motive (Iron Man), Cliffhanger (Black Panther), and BioWare (Dragon Age, Mass Effect). She will report directly to EA Entertainment head Laura Miele. "Connie spent more than 30 years helping to build Sony Interactive Entertainment’s internal studios and is responsible for guiding the development of some of their biggest franchises, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 1 & 2, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, to name just a few," Miele said in a statement. "She is known for having created an incredible developer-first culture and supporting creative vision while driving innovation. I have known Connie for many years and have always been impressed by her love and commitment to games. She especially cares about game developers. She has an impeccable reputation within the development community and will undoubtedly have a positive impact on our games." [...] Booth's hiring points to EA's desire to replicate some of PlayStation's current exclusives strategy, in which it has found success with large-scale single-player games such as God of War and Spider-Man. In initiating its current restructure, EA has said that it is prioritizing its own franchises and that one of its pillars is "blockbuster storytelling" — an area in which Booth has considerable experience. One of Booth's major tasks will be revitalizing BioWare, which is hoping that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will reverse its fortunes after Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda. BioWare suffered painful layoffs in 2023 and its next entry in the Mass Effect franchise remains in pre-production."

Could you recreate Oxygen Not Included in Rimworld?
I'm not sure I'd call ONI a rimworld-like, necessarily? I'm more referring to a very specific strain of game which borrows more directly from rimworld (even beyond the artstyle, which rimworld itself borrowed from prison architect)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
amazing cultivation simulator, the second screencap, is actually really good and does a ton of stuff that mods alone couldn't achieve. I highly recommend it if you like cultivation games
keplerth, the third screencap, is an action rpg... which makes it kind of funny it pulls so heavily from rimworld? I've played it, and it really just doesn't feel like rimworld at all besides the visual style and some random gameplay elements that jump out here and there. that being said, I enjoyed my time with it
there's a whole genre of games that are very very very unmistakeably rimworld influenced, which is funny because rimworld isn't all that original

To be fair, I think there's a lot of nuance between "the OGL was always bad and everyone was a sucker to have trusted WotC to uphold it" and "the OGL is the best thing to happen to D&D and D&D will die without it."
First of all, a bit of context: the OGL wasn't published purely out of the kindness of Wizards of the Coast's hearts. It was a decision informed by the desire to make D&D into the absolute biggest game on the market. The prevailing logic of the time was that while any growth to the RPG hobby in general would feed back to the industry leader, the fact that the market was fractured and there were so many competing systems meant that there would be resistance towards people shifting to D&D from other games. The idea was that the lower the barrier to creating D&D compatible content the less support there would be in the market for other systems and the more people would gravitate towards D&D.
Or at least that's what Ryan Dancey, one of the architects of the OGL, claimed at the time. This is all from an interview with him, via the Internet Archive.
But the important thing to remember that the context in which the OGL was made was also one where the RPG industry had seen multiple instances of litigation because games and products had been seen as infringing on established copyrights. While it's easy for us to say that the OGL was a useless document only motivated by corporate greed, it ignores the historical context in which the OGL was first introduced: an environment where just seven years before Palladium Books had taken legal action against Wizards of the Coast due to copyright infringement. Even though with the benefit of hindsight it's easy to say that rules and mechanics aren't copyrightable and law specifically allows you to claim compatibility, the actual lived experience in the RPG community at the time was that ligitous companies could and would sue you for something as simple as claiming compatibility. Hell, TSR was supposedly so litigious in the 80s and 90s that people came up with the backronym "They Sue Regularly" for them.
So in that context the OGL, even if it technically didn't grant any rights people didn't already have based on existing law (and even on this there doesn't seem to be a consensus), was a massive game changer: it was permission from a company to use their house system to produce compatible content without having to fear limitation!
The OGL was always made with the intent of making D&D the biggest game on the market and to diminish the market share of competitors on the market. But it also marked a huge change in the industry towards how large publishers approached third party content.
But between the d20 bubble bursting in the early 2000s and the introduction of 4e and the GSL and the ensuing loss of a lot of customer goodwill and most third party support, the OGL had also become something of a problem for WotC. It had managed to create their biggest competitor and allowed an independent market to emerge where people used it to create material that did not feed back into the official D&D ecosystem (see the whole of the OSR and any number of d20-based games that are so distinct from D&D that any claims of compatibility are strenuous at best). In light of this I think it's understandable why it took some time for Wizards to adopt the OGL for D&D 5e (5e came out in 2014; it wasn't until 2016 until parts of 5e were made available through the OGL) but also why their new management seem to want to unauthorize the original OGL: the OGL was created in a completely different context and the current prevailing wisdom at WotC is that D&D should be a walled garden that WotC controls, because the OGL in its original form has caused WotC problems down the line (while I do think it could be said to have achieved its original goal of making D&D the market leader and creating a lot of resistance towards the use of other game systems). The prevailing opinion is no longer that vibrant third party support creates demand for the core product (and I mean, that was always something of a flaw in the original plan: once you've sold everyone a Player's Handbook, they no longer need to keep buying it no matter how many more third party products come out). Instead, those third party sales are now seen as taking away money that could be better spent on official D&D stuff.
None of this is to say that I think what WotC is doing is good: even if the OGL had been meaningless from a legal standpoint it had sent a message that creators had some degree of protection from legal action. Even if its original purpose was to suffocate the market with D&D support to the detriment of other games, it was still an entry point for many amazing creatives in the industry and it has played a small part in making the RPG scene more vibrant. I won't discuss whether or not WotC can legally unauthorize the original OGL, but from my own point of view whatever the legality of it is, just the idea of unauthorizing it is a betrayal to many creatives who in good faith expected to be able to continue using it.
Anyway, Kobold is supposedly working on a secret project, which to me sounds like they're going to make their own game that just so happens to be compatible with D&D while not using the OGL but only time will tell, and Paizo is in the process of creating their own open license, probably so they can keep Pathfinder 2e open to third party creators. We'll see how this pans out.

I can't figure out this spacing thing and I'm not about to find out. So hey! I'm Allul (They/Them, trying to figure that thing out)! I'm that fucking creature that's flooding your dash with posts about a boat girl and whatever other shenanigans my mind decides to get up to. I'd say I should apologize but really the longer you know me the more you realize this is just how I live my life
I'm 26 (Not for long) and a terrible chronic gacha addict that probably should've stopped a long time ago. But since i haven't I now have adopted boats (as this blog shows) along with....
androids
horse girls
very bisexual prisoners
food personifications
goblins
cinnamon rolls
and plenty of other random things that go in and out of my mind on the daily. This may come at a surprise to plenty of people but I literally haven't even been here a year yet (shocking I know). Most of my writing career has been either super bad fanfics, skype rp (yes this sadly was part of my life), and forums of recently. Only after being dragged here by a few friends did I realize what I was missing out on and I'm glad I joined! I promise you I'm not intimidating as I may seem (If I even come off as intimidating) and really I'm a DM away from blowing your eardrums off about whatever you want. Like lets be real my first blog here was a goddamn pokemon. I think that says everything you need to know.
Anyway next is checks notes about myself and that's problematic. Because I have no idea how to do that :3. According to my friends this meme explains it best
Tumblr media
But as expected writing is my hobby (go figure) and beyond that is probably video games. A lot and a ALOT of RPGS, Fighting Games, and whatever is out there to get my serotonin running. Currently I'm down in the mines playing Granblue Fantasy Relink, Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising (are you noticing the trend), and dabbling in some other ventures (Gundam Versus if you want to know how niche my tastes get. I also collect plushes!
Tumblr media
in line with my crippling Granblue addiction music CD's!
Tumblr media
But yeah if it wasn't obvious I love talking about literally anything. My interests are kinda all over the place but most people can vouch that I'm a damn good listener. And that includes plotting even if my mentality usually is just a "fuck it we ball one" rather than really planning it out (I do love planning too! But sometimes you really just gotta go off and never stop). If you don't find me here on NJ's Blog well don't worry I have like 11 more as well. Featuring...
Morgan le Fay (Fate) (@talesofrainandstars_
Melusine (Also from Fate) (@robustdragonheart)
Nian (Arknights) (@unfetteredfreedom)
Mika ("Archive that may be Blue") (@witchoftrinity)
Architect (Girls' Frontline) (@explosivedesire)
Fenie (Granblue Fantasy) (@sourceoftheflame)
Miyoi Okunoda (Touhou) (@geidonteispostergirl)
"Sparkle" (Honkai Stars Rails) @sparklingsplendor
Hiroi Kikuri (Bocchi the Rock) (@sickhackbassist)
My OC Protag from Armored Core 6 "Raven" (@echoesofcoral)
Beyond that I'm always in Discord if you just want to chat or anything else. You can also find me on twitter where I rant about the most craziest things and cry when my favorites in gachas actually get content (it doesn't happen often). Other then that I have no idea how to end this so here's a picture of my dog
Tumblr media
anyway I think I've ranted long enough. Looking forward to talking with everyone more and anyone else who is willing to put up with my muses!"

How I Take Solo RPG Notes
Some people have asked me what kind of notes I keep when I do solo roleplaying games. I have been kind of vague about it in the past because it's hard to describe but I thought I'd show some snippets from a game I'm starting up using my 3x3 system.
Here's my character notes:
Tumblr media
The stats for 3x3 are very simple. The three traits I chose are just typical druid stuff for a high fantasy style game. For her background, I used the Cotton Eyed Joe Method of Character Creation I came up with a while ago.
I tend to play from primarily the character's point of view rather than switching between GM and player. I think of what questions she would have and then I generate details. It mimics her discovering the world in a sense.
For those following along with the 3x3 main card, the IT is the inspiration table on the back.
Tumblr media
I pause whenever there's a new question or some action that needs some rolls to resolve. Here I decided on a mind check because I wasn't sure how much she'd know about babies.
Tumblr media
I pair my skill rolls with the oracle I have on the card as well. Just as an additional jumping off point beyond merely a success or a failure.
Tumblr media
Here the mind check was just to see if her perception/investigation check was a success or not. I was struggling some with these inspiration prompts but decided to do the best I could.
Tumblr media
At this point I have a vague idea of where this story might go. The child might be the illegitimate child of a god who was being hidden by a devoted cleric. A beast sent by the god's partner was sent to attempt to kill the child and the cleric but both survived. I'll see if Rayel is able to help either of them in the end and what the gods involved decide to do about it.
This is all in Notion btw. It's nothing fancy. I try to keep it simple or I get lost in the architecting and not the playing.
I hope this is at least a jumping off point for people! It's quite fun!

Introducing another oc I created for Avatar Legends RPG: Sangpo ✨ He's an air bender from the Southern Air Temple, he's a builder and architect with a passion for visual art, sculpture in particular. He started his nomad life to study other places' architectures and art styles. During his journey, he stumbled across Krisha (my other oc) and the two have been travelling together ever since.

So we can have more information about the species of angel, (Type function, appearance of the wings, etc.) I wanted to make an OC angel, but we don't have much information about them.
I keep some vague for people to just add their own ideas to characters so they aren't bound to hard rules.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But some basic info-
All angel types have one set of white, light blue tipped wings and have conventional human eyes friendly forms.
Angels: Angels are sort of the average joes of the angel classes. Their kingdom is where most common humans end up living and their towns/cities are meant to reflect architecturally. Very much small-town energy. Their jobs are the most varied since their job is to tend to the needs of humans( and even angels) so things like bakers, cooks, delivery, maids, town mayors/city officials, carpenters, etc. if the town needs a role filled then an angel will be assigned to it! Angels true form are just humans but with wings
Archangels: Archangels typically have one of these two jobs. Being an arch guardian or a transporter/shepherd. Arch guardians watch over individuals or families down on earth, essentially acting as guardian angels (I just wanted to give em a different name), and protect. The second one is a transporter/shepherd and they pick up and drop off souls at the proper afterlife based on their death reports and the life they lived. They are essentially grim reapers or ferrymen. Archangels true form is a dragon and depending on how well they are with magic and age they have additional eyes on their body. Their kindgrom is the weirdest of them all as, to summarize it, looks very vaporwave/weirdcore. Usually, a human gets promoted to this class or the Angel class.
Principalities: Scholars, magicians, wizards, archivists etc basically anything that required high amounts of intelligence. Principalities angels value knowledge and truth above all else. Principalities true form is very nimbus-y in appearance and even in the more conventional form they have very textured and/or fluffy hair. Their kingdom is composed of many libraries and schools specializing in various fields of academia.
Virtues: Artists, writers, philosophers, architects, actors, singers, etc these angels embody everything that is beaufiul in humanity both physically, spiritually, and morality. Though, less importance has been placed on morality. Their true form is similar to angel's forms but they exclude a bright radiant light from their entire body and are extremely beautiful. Virues angels also have 4 wings similar to the Seraphim but are still tipped blue. Their kingdom is one of, if not, the most beautiful kingdoms with artistic beauty in even the smallest blade of grass to the grandest buildings.
Powers: Military branch of the angels. They protect Utopia and Earth from the forces of evil threatening them. Powers angels begin basic training from a young age and are divided into teams once they have mastered their fighting style. Melee, ranged, magic, healer, etc you basic RPG/DnD classes you get it. Other angel types can enlist themselves into the Powers branch even if they aren't natural born powers angels. They can master multiple types of combat but generally have one signature that they stick to. For powers angels that use weapons their weapon can be summoned at any time (unless fallen like Noel) and take form/adapt to the user. Powers angels true form are giant moving masked statues with wings that harden into steel.
Cherubim: Cherubim angels are the angels of nature in that everything that is living was made by them. Animals, plants, mountains, oceans, were all designed by them. Their kingdom is at one with nature with many of the buildings being built into or decorated with it. Their true form is a multi-headed beast hybrid.
Thrones: Lawmakers and work beside dominion angels, having a hand in everything to ensure it is running in perfect harmony. Their true form is (play the game and use process of elimination to find out!) Mostly "extinct" since Lucifer's fall. Remaining thrones angels that didn't rebel with Lucifer were absorbed into the dominion class.
Dominions: Dominion angels work(ed) alongside thrones angels to establish the law and order of the mortal and afterlife. The enforce the law and tasks to the other kingdoms that they and The Choir have decided upon. Their true form is (play the game and use process of elimination to find out!)

Howdy!
I have a friend that really wants to get into other games that aren't just mostly combat like pathfinder and dnd but they're a shitpost kinda player so they aren't fond of horror or angsty games.
Do you have any good suggestions for more light-hearted/comedic rpgs? They like Risus if that helps, just it's a bit too light for me to run it.
Sorry if this is a lot.
THEME: Shitpost Games
My friend, this is not a lot, there are plenty of great shitpost-style games out there of all kinds of genres! Let’s see what I’ve got that might be up their alley.
When it comes to the “lightness” of Risus, I’m not sure if you mean that there aren’t enough rules or if there’s not enough setting. These recommendations will have much more specific settings, although shitpost games tend to be pretty light on rules all-round, so hopefully there are some rules systems here that still appeal to you!

Pride and Extreme Prejudice, by Grant Howitt.
A hand-created one-page RPG about proper ladies of a marriageable age and their giant robots powered by a malign eldritch intelligence. Will you find a suitable husband? Will you repel the French invaders? Will your eternity reactor leak and drive you and your sisters irrevocably mad, haunted my whispers from the dark between the stars?  And - will you be late for the ball on Thursday eve?
Combining Regency styles of flirting with giant multi-pilot mechs is a game that I didn’t know I wanted until I found it. It involves 4 players and a GM, with each character embodying one of four young women, all looking for a husband while also fighting off giant French clockwork dragoons.
Each situation will be a combination of a social outing and a military action taken by the opposition. Each turn, your players will have to figure out how to pursue true love while also redirecting power, how to unleash hell with a shot cannon while also coming across as cool, calm and collected, and how to charm someone with your earnest opinions while also charging an enemy before they can shoot the gentleman you’re flirting with.
I think the only thing more hilarious than playing this game, is playing this game absolutely 100% seriously. Go ham.
Never Send A Barber to do an Assassin’s Job, by Silver Hoof Games.
You are a professional. You are a…  Confectioner, Architect, Fisherman, Gravedigger, Barber or Actor. But you couldn't find proper employment for yourself! You had no other choice, or perhaps by mistake, you became none other than an assassin.
You would need some d6, friends and no DM!
As a GM-less game, this might be a great way for the person who usually runs the show to get in on the action with everyone else. Using only d6s, you’ll find ways to use your confectioner’s bag of sugar or your barber’s strong perfume to play as assassin’s who are just trying to pay the bills. Something about using a round peg to fill a square hole - right now it’s just a page with rules, but the designer is hoping to use whatever funds they raise with it to turn it into something more complete.
OSHA Violations: The Game, by Alex Kingsley.
Regulations are in place to keep workers safe. But c’mon, in this economy? The goal of the game is simple: commit as many OSHA violations as possible without getting caught. The player with most OSHA Violations at the end wins-- unless they get shut down by the Safety Inspector!
This game selects one person to play the role of Safety Inspector, while the rest of the group will present themself as Site Managers. The Safety inspector will create a tragic backstory, a dirty secret, and their favourite OSHA violation. The Site Managers will design their construction sites and roll a d6 to determine how many OSHA violations they MUST have on site (although they may have more). What specific violations those are will be determined by a roll table.
This game heavily relies on improv, but there’s a win condition: the Inspector must guess who has the most violations. If they guess correctly, the player with the second-most violations is the winner - if they do not guess correctly, the player with the most violations wins the game!
Games I’ve Recommended in the Past
My Silly Games Post.
My TragicComic Games Post.
Something is Wrong with the Chickens, by Elliot Davis.
Clown Helsing, by Planarian.
Untitled Ghost Game, by Alice V.

We Built This City On.repeat() by Nathan Blades
As part of Orbital Blues: Afterburn we are working with a fantastic team of writers to create a series of short pamphlet adventures to drop in or kick off an Orbital Blues campaign.
In the run up to launch (October 17th!) we are teasing a little about each of the adventures so watch this space 👀
Today, as the title suggests, "We Built This City On.repeat()" by Nathan Blades
Out in the desert, they build whole cities from the sand itself.
In a bid to terraform the planet's wasteland, the Corps use drone architects to break down local material and turn it into offices, shopping malls... all the essential amenities.
The first few cities were precisely planned and curated affairs but as demand for interstellar resorts grew, the Corp engineers went hands-off, and left the drones to their own devices.
This city is a picture of perfect Americana from a distance, but it's a thin veneer hiding what uncannily incorrect architecture.
To make a perfect city, even people can be rebuilt...
