okay, but in the universe of The Princess Bride, S. Morgenstern's classic tale of true love and high adventure has got to be, like, the Florinese in-universe equivalent of The Three Musketeers. Buttercup, Westley, Inigo, Fezzik, and the rest, they must be like stock public domain characters peppered lovingly throughout Florinese stories and songs and bedtime tales
I almost want to say it's the Florinese equivalent of Les Miserables, criticizing the ruling class and making heroes of the common people (Buttercup and Westley, ordinary farmhands; Inigo and Fezzik obviously represent the "new Florinese," the immigrants who came from overseas; and lots of digressive asides which are elided to make a snappier story)

today i learned that william goldman (the guy who wrote "the princess bride" (the og book version)) is lowkey a biiiiitch and it's kinda hilarious
now, you may be thinking, wait didn't s. morgenstern write the og og book, and goldman just made the common abridged version?
nope.
s. morgenstern doesn't fucking exist.
goldman made him up. (as a prank? as a joke? as lore? i honestly dont know haha)
he wrote an entire thing at the start of the book that was just like "oh, i wish i came up with this story, i love all the characters, blah, blah, blah"
also-
at least the version i have, on the cover, says "includes the first chapter of the long-lost sequal, buttercup's baby"
:0000 there's a sequel??? whaaat i must read
wrong again.
if i'm correct, he wrote one chapter and then stopped, but put it in here for funseys
pleeease if you have any other silly william goldman stuff put it in the notes i'd love to hear

I don't know who needs to hear this but most of the 1-star Amazon reviews for The Princess Bride by William Goldman are people absolutely IRATE that it isn't "the original book" and is instead an "abridged version" by "the screenplay writer."

me, realizing that both Sebastian Morgenstern & Aleksander Morozova got stabbed by the girl who was their nemesis—the same girl they became sexually obsessed with because they were obsessed with ruling the world alongside the only person who could be their “equal” 😳
oh & their parents were obsessed with making them strong

Maryse: Oh, and I always hide an axe under the bed.
Jocelyn: Pfft, I'm sorry for both of you.
Maryse: Then what are you sleeping with?
Jocelyn: Valentine.

reading the princess bride and laughing at the fact that in humperdincks zoo of death, on the third level reserved for "poisoners" along with "spitting cobras" and "death bats", hes also included ..... jumping spiders.
just imagining this place filled with all these animals that could kill u with one bite and then.. theres a little jumping spider, looking up at u with its big ole eyes.
not to mention that the whole point of this zoo is that humperdinck can go n hunt these animals anytime he likes. this big guy needs to feel the thrill of the hunt and tells the albino keeper that he wants to hunt down a jumping spider today. amazing

Wintery Book Recommendations!
As I recall, most of the regulars to this space live in the Northern Hemisphere and are, presumably, currently quite cold. So I thought I would put together a list of cosy books to distract you as your nose runs and your glasses steam up every time you go from outdoors to indoors. Don’t need glasses yet? Just wait. Carmilla The vampire novel that came before Dracula, I have a very specific…

So, I'm reading William Goldman's The Princess Bride - S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure (I love this title), and I reached the page where Goldman says to write to his publisher Harcourt to ask for a copy of Westley and Buttercup's reunion down the ravine (he added in a late edition a website that, surprise surprise, doesn't work).
Anyway, I tried something.

I'll keep you posted if I get an answer!

I need to know if Erin Morgenstern picked her last name based on S. Morgenstern. It’s a need.
