Francis Quirk, or, the means by which his lordship lost his land: a camp nanowrimo wip intro
Genre: historical fiction
Setting: another 18th century Ireland wip 😔🖐️ set in the same fictional northern Irish parish as RRL but nearly 20 years earlier
Content warnings: suicide, death, gore, period typical bigotry, etc
Returning home from his mandated time in London with a law degree in hand, ascendancy fop Robert d'Hermite finds himself lucky on three fronts. One, France has not yet invaded. Two, his best friend, Mr Francis Quirk, son of the local doctor, has returned from the American war, though in very bad spirits. And three, Robert d'Hermite has suddenly been created Lord Kilcullen, for his uncle, the previous Lord, has died -- in apparent suicide, under very suspicious circumstances. Robert doesn't care about the mystery, but Francis, a social climber if there ever was one, cares very much, and so the two embark on a quest to tease out the true circumstances of the old Lord's death from those members of the local gentry who may have been involved. Here, however, Robert d'Hermite is unlucky on two fronts. One, every single person in the parish seems to have hands soaked to the skin in his uncle's blood. And two, there's something less than pure about Francis' motivations -- if Robert could only put his finger on it...
Ask to be +/- from taglist!!!
Characters
Robert d'Hermite - a foolish young lawyer recently come into a great inheritance. Dangerously sentimental and, to put it nicely, there isn't much going on behind those spectacles he wears. Drinking, hunting, gambling, &c. he/him
Lt. Francis Quirk - a soldier of the British army suffering from a bullet wound to the leg obtained fighting the American rebels. Something of a schemer, something of a thinker, but unwilling to put his talents to real use. he/him
Samuel Murdock - a local Volunteer officer who Francis has grown quite close with in recent days. A firebrand who has fought duel after duel, and never over something worthwhile. he/him
Anne Murdock - handsome, clever, rich, and hiding something. Sam Murdock's sister who both Francis and Robert are hopelessly in love with. she/her
Kitty Lambe - a flippant young heiress who enjoys flirting, drinking, and riding, in that order. Robert's mistress at the start of the story, but perhaps not for much longer. she/her
Geraldine Musgrave - a nervous girl unsure about her future on all counts, but assuredly dissatisfied with what she has now. she/her
Sir Richard Gregory - the best friend of the dead man, a temperamental man who enjoys making alterations to his estate and reading. he/him
Walter Adams - a Dublin lawyer up to the northern country for his health, staying with Sir Richard. Considerably more outwardly political. he/him

Now
Dean had taken it upon himself to distract Brooke while Rowena did her thing, claiming to want to show her all the cool things the Men of Letters had accumulated over the years so Sam could focus on Rowena and her spell.
Sam was grateful Brooke wouldn’t have to ingest anything to break the curse. The potion Rowena was brewing did not look appetizing and smelled like the wrong end of a hellhound. Though, was there a right end to a hellhound?
Rowena sighed, and Sam saw the agitation in her eyes and pursed lips. “Everything okay?”
“While I am the best at what I do,” she explained, “memory spells are tricky at best. And though I enjoy the company of a strapping young lad such as yourself from time to time, you hovering over me like an oversized hawk is a wee bit distracting.”
“Sorry,” he said and moved from perching over her shoulder to a seat on the other side of the table. “It’s been a tough few weeks. I just need this done.”
For a moment, she looked sympathetic, but Sam knew it wasn’t for his weariness. “It’s almost done,” she said, picking up a vial of yellow flakes and tipping its contents into the bowl. “So what do you have to be so sullen about?”
“Not sure you noticed, but I burned down my girlfriend's house.” He sighed, rubbing a hand down his face, feeling the three days’ worth of growth on his cheeks. He’d had more important things to worry about than shaving, but he wondered how disheveled he looked.
Rowena tsked. “Now, you know that's not strictly true. It isn’t as if you set a match to it yourself.”
“But if I hadn't tried to remove the ring-”
“Samuel, how could you have possibly known that that would happen? I have no doubt that even Malakai was surprised by that turn of events, and he cast the cursed spell. Beating yourself up over it isn't going to do anyone any good. Better to pour that energy into doing what we can to right the situation.”
“You're right. It's just hard to shake this guilt.”
“Perhaps, but even harder is deciding what to do next.”
“What do you mean? We lift the curse, right?” He frowned, worrying he’d missed something off the list that would delay the process. Sitting forward, he fretted, “Did I forget something?”
“No, no,” she assured him, “my instructions were very specific, and you followed them to the letter.”
Sam’s relief was palpable. The thought of having to wait any longer was unbearable.
“But you have a decision to make, Samuel,” Rowena continued solemnly. “I can restore all of her memories and allow her to keep the ones she’s made since this unfortunate situation began, or I can be very specific about what she remembers.”
“I want her to remember all of it,” Sam said.
“I’m sure you do, my dear,” she smiled sadly, “but being associated with a Winchester is dangerous business. Having one love you has proven to be fatal on many occasions. As a consequence, I think you should fully consider all the possibilities before you make a final decision.”
“I want…” He hesitated, then almost to himself, as a reminder, “Messing with memories is dangerous.”
“It is extremely dangerous,” Rowena agreed when his silence dragged on. “That’s why you need to make sure your decision, whatever it may be, is made for the right reasons. So, I’ll ask again.” She lowered her voice and spoke deliberately, “How much do you want her to remember?”
Sam scrubbed a hand down his face, considering the witch’s warning, but was startled by the broken sound of Brooke’s voice when she said his name from the doorway.
“Sam?”
He whipped around on his seat to see her eyes filled with tears, and it was clear she’d heard enough that his hesitation was distressing.
“Brooke, I…” He was on his feet and chasing after her before she’d completely turned to walk away. “Brooke, wait.”
“I can’t believe you're even considering it,” she snapped over her shoulder. “After everything.”
Sam’s longer legs allowed him to gain ground on her, and he managed to step into her path. She shoved at his chest, but he refused to move, and she let out a frustrated growl.
“You’re mad at Tommy for messing with me, and here you are considering doing the exact same thing.”
“I hesitated,” Sam admitted, “because there was a lot to consider, but-”
She interrupted him, indignation and hurt caught in her throat. “But what? You and everyone else get to decide what happens to me, but I don’t get a say in it?”
“That’s not what-”
“I get it. You needed a distraction from everything. Something, anything normal. But now what?” Her tears finally fell freely, and Sam’s heart ached as he thumbed them away, but she continued. “The illusion is over, and I can’t be your distraction, so you’re just done with me? How is that-”
Sam interrupted her by cupping her face and drawing her to his mouth. She resisted for half a second, not quite ready to let go of her offense. But she allowed him to pull her closer, and his kiss seemed to mend the wounds his hesitation had caused.
“You’re not a distraction, Brooke. And even if we spent a million lifetimes together, I’d never be done with you. I don’t know how this works now, how we move forward, or even if we can,” he said, uncertainty and worry washing through him like a cold sweat. “And you’re right, this decision should be yours, but if you don’t hesitate in making it, I’d be worried that you don’t fully understand what it is you're signing up for.”
“I do,” she said, but her voice was small and uncertain. She cleared her throat and spoke with more conviction. “I do, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t scare me a little, too.” She shied from his gaze with a light blush. “I don’t have all my memories, but I have all the information.” She looked at him again, giving him the most resolved smile he’d ever seen on her, “And I know how I feel.”
If Sam knew anything, it was that time should never be considered a luxury. He had to take every moment for what it was, and although she hadn’t said the words, he knew what she meant.
“I also know how I feel, and that’s why I hesitated. There’re no more illusions. You’ve seen behind the curtain, and I still want you here, but maybe that’s selfish of me. Now you know exactly who we are and what we do. You've seen the kinds of people and forces we encounter. How dangerous they can be. Hell, all this,” he lifted her hand, so she looked at her ring, “this was someone’s idea of fun. So you’ve seen how they won't hesitate to go after the ones we love. You and me? A relationship like this? This is something I didn't allow myself for a long time. Perhaps, I shouldn't have allowed it this time.”
Her face crumpled, “Don’t say that.”
“I don’t regret a second of us,” said Sam, cupping her cheek, and she nuzzled into the warmth of his hand, her eyes slipping to a close. He couldn’t help but draw her closer to softly kiss her lips. “The only people Dean and I allow close to us are already in this life, and even they don't always escape the acquaintance unscathed. To be with me, you’re putting yourself and your loved ones at risk. No matter how we feel, how truly head over heels in love with you I am, it’s something we have to consider. We'll do everything in our power to protect you and your family and friends, but I need you to be sure that this, and everything that comes with it, is what you truly want.”
“Did you forget my family is all law enforcement?” she asked, her brow cocked. “I know it’s not the same, I know there’s more risk involved, but I’m no stranger to having to look over my shoulder. But no risk, no reward, right?”
He gave her a brief smile. “But you need to make a fully informed and carefully considered decision that it’s worth it.” He sighed heavily, the next part wasn’t as easy to say, but it had to be said. “I want you to be sure I’m worth it.”
She rose to the tips of her toes and kissed him, chaste but firm. “My memories may be fractured, but I know - without a shadow of a doubt - in here,” she said, taking his hand and placing his palm flat over her heart, “that you are. Sam, I lo-”
“Wait,” he said, harsher than he intended. “Don’t say it, not yet. Can you wait until after we break the curse? So I know that it’s real.”
She smiled sweetly but shook her head. “Memories or not, it won’t change how I feel. You feel like home, and I love you, Sam.”
He kissed her again, the confidence in her statement cleansing him of his remaining anxiety. He slipped his arm around her waist, and just as he pulled her flush against him, Dean cleared his throat, interrupting them.
“Sorry, guys,” he said, “but it’s time.”
Tumblr media
Brooke watched Rowena with nervous fascination, as did Tommy. The bowl in front of her sizzled like a skillet, but when Brooke peered over, nothing moved inside. The purple, vaporous substance glittered under the light but was otherwise still.
Rowena turned to Brooke with a small smile, holding out her hands. “Are you ready, my dear?”
Brooke swallowed thickly and stepped forward, giving Rowena her trembling hands. She wasn’t quite sure what she was supposed to do, but she was willing to do whatever was asked of her.
“While I respect your wish to keep all of your memories, old and new, you must understand that leaving everyone else unaffected could prove to be…problematic,” Rowena explained. “Your family and friends won’t remember things exactly how they happened after the curse was put in place. They won’t remember your relationship with Thomas.” She pursed her lips and shot a dangerous glare at him before turning a sweet smile back at Brooke. “I thought it best they simply think you were busy with your new beau, Samuel. They’ll perhaps scold you for letting him take up so much of your time, but ultimately, they’ll just be happy you found someone.”
“And my house?” asked Brooke, following Rowena’s gaze to Sam.
He gave her a tight smile. “They’ll think it was faulty wiring,” he said and dropped his eyes.
“Okay,” nodded Brooke, “let’s do this.”
“I’m going to add the last ingredient, and when I do, the contents of the bowl will illuminate and look much like flame,” Rowena explained, “but I promise it will not burn you. The ring must pass through this fire, and as it’s stuck to your hand, well… You should feel a slight tingling sensation, is all. Nothing to worry about.”
“Okay,” said Brooke, throwing a panicked look at Sam. He nodded, giving her a crooked half-smile.
“You can trust her.”
“Ow!” Tommy yelped, and Brooke turned back to see Rowena holding a few freshly plucked strands of his hair.
She dropped the strands into the bowl, and there was a blinding white light. Brooke jumped back, afraid of being burnt despite Rowena’s assurances. She watched the purple flames dance, and for a moment, she thought she saw an image of her and Sam flicker across them, but as quickly as it appeared, it was gone.
“Brooke,” said Sam softly. She didn’t have the words to reply, there was a literal magic flame swaying in front of her, and she was supposed to put her hand in it. She sensed rather than saw Sam step up beside her, but when he took her hand, the trance was broken, and she peered up at him.
“We can do it together,” he offered, then quickly looked to Rowena as if to ask if that was okay. The witch nodded, and the small gesture cured Brooke of her residual apprehension.
Sam let her lead, and she took a hesitant step forward. Slowly, she lifted their joined hands, drawing closer to the moving magic, still expecting to feel an unnatural heat at any moment.
“Wait,” he called a second before the violet flame licked their skin. She gazed up at him, panic in her features, which Sam smoothed away with a hand on her cheek. “If something goes wrong-”
Rowena tutted, but Sam continued as if she hadn’t.
“-I need you to know I love you.”
She tiptoed to capture his mouth with her own, and at the same moment, she threw their hands into the blaze. Her hand tingled as Rowena said it would, and as it crept higher up her arm, Sam broke the kiss. Brooke’s vision distorted, but she could still discern his concerned frown. Before she could ask if something was wrong, she heard Rowena say, “Dean, be a dear and help your brother catch her.”
Then, everything faded to black.
Tumblr media
Sam chewed the wick of his thumbnail, keeping vigil beside Brooke’s bed. Her eyes darted under her lids, and her body jerked intermittently. Rowena assured him it was expected, but it did little to calm him. Brooke hadn’t regained consciousness, and it had been almost two hours.
She didn’t look comfortable. Her fists clenched around the bedsheets, and her brow was set in a deep frown. She looked as if she were having a vivid dream, and Sam hoped, perhaps selfishly, that it involved everything she’d forgotten. He whispered reassurances to her, willing her to wake up. He wanted to uncoil her fist and kiss the tension away from her rigid digits, but he feared touching her would cause some unforeseen complication.
“I’m right here, Brooke,” said Sam.
A wave of nausea curdled in his stomach. What if, when her memories were once again intact, she wouldn’t want him to be there?
Dean cleared his throat from the doorway, and it startled Sam, but not enough that he took his eyes off Brooke.
“No change?”
Sam shook his head, “Nothing.”
“I took Tommy back to his family,” Dean reported, “douchebag even thanked me. I stayed long enough to watch Brooke’s brother and his band of merry men show up to arrest him.”
Sam had given Brett all the non-supernatural information he’d gathered on Tommy when he’d dropped Brooke off at his house the night before. The evidence of his stalking was indisputable, even if Brett had been suspicious of Sam.
“Let’s hope the justice system does what it’s supposed to.”
“Oh, I think it will,” said Dean. “And if not, some other system will. He was shouting about magic and witches while they bundled him into the car. He’ll be in a big white room before sunrise.”
Sam scoffed, “I guess Rowena let him keep all his memories, too. Good.”
Brooke’s hitched breathing was the only sound for a moment. Sam heard Dean approach but didn’t look up.
He felt Dean’s hand on his shoulder, and Sam heaved a sigh. “Please don’t give me a lecture right now.”
“No lecture,” Dean said, giving his shoulder a comforting squeeze, “but the easy part is over, Sammy. Now the hard part starts, figuring out how you move forward together.”
“We’ll work it out,” Sam said confidently, “Too much has happened for us not to.”
“I know,” said Dean, just as Brooke omitted a small groan.
“Brooke,” Sam said, taking her hand in his own.
Her eyes fluttered open, but she quickly scrunched them closed again and covered them with her free hand. “Ow,” she moaned. In a whisper, “My head hurts.”
“Rowena said you’d probably have a pressure headache for a few days,” Sam explained in a hushed voice, “undoing the spell means we’ve overloaded you with information. You’ll need a couple of days to recover fully.”
“I’ll get you some aspirin,” Dean said, backing out of the room.
Brooke pouted, groaning as she wriggled her hand free from Sam’s grasp to rub small circles on her temples. “Ow, ow, ow,” she whimpered, “my skin hurts too. Is that normal? Like a tingling sensation.”
“I don’t know,” he said, “I’ve never been in this situation before.” She continued to massage her temples, but her face remained scrunched with pain. “Why don’t you try and sleep?”
“Sleep sounds good.” Her voice was already drowsy. “But only if you stay with me.”
“I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
She stretched her arm out, blindly searching for him, and he gave her his hand. “You’re too far away,” she whined, tugging him closer as she scooted over in the bed to make room for him.
His smile beamed as he slipped his arm under her neck, and she snuggled closer to him, throwing her leg over his hip. Placing a gentle kiss on her forehead, he muttered, “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you, too,” she said, but her voice sounded far away like she was already half-asleep. Her steady breathing tickled the base of his throat, and Sam closed his eyes, content to just lay with her while she fell asleep, buoyant in the knowledge that she was free of the curse and hadn’t asked him to leave.
Suddenly, she gasped and pulled back.
“What’s wrong?” asked Sam.
“I love you,” Brooke blurted as if the thought had only just occurred to her.
Sam’s heart might have actually jumped to his throat. Now that he knew she remembered everything, he could trust the truth of it.
Still, she seemed so surprised by her own statement that it made him a little uncomfortable. “Is that a problem?” he chuckled.
She edged closer to him, her lips brushing his when she said, “Absolutely not.”
Tumblr media
The day had been perfect, despite crying on at least four occasions. Brooke’s heart was full, and it was impossible to stop herself from smiling. From across the large room decorated in white and autumn oranges, she observed her friends dancing with the bride. At the bar were her mother, Brianna, and father, Brian, talking to Sam and Dean. Her mother’s smile was just as big as Brooke’s had been all day, and her father shook Dean’s hand with his other clasped on his shoulder. She knew without being able to hear the conversation that Brian was thanking Dean for helping catch Tommy in the same sincere, enthusiastic way he’d thanked Sam.
The unfortunate house fire must have been mentioned, as she glimpsed that distant flash of guilt on Sam’s face. She had yet to completely convince him that she didn’t blame him, that she thought it was almost romantic that their love for one another was so strong it literally set something ablaze. Granted, it had only been a month, and the insurance company was dragging its feet with the payout, so it was still a sore subject.
Brett stepped into her line of sight, interrupting her view. “Hey, Baby Bee,” he said, offering her a glass of champagne before standing beside her.
“Hey, Big Bee,” she smiled, resting her head on his shoulder. “Feel like a husband yet?”
He chuckled, “Absolutely, and I have to say, it’s a pretty damn good feeling.”
They touched their glasses together in a toast and took a small sip in unison, Brooke never taking her eyes off Sam. This had been the exact scene she’d wanted to see play out since her birthday, Sam being greeted by everyone with familiar and welcoming hugs. Well, perhaps not everyone. Chris had been glaring daggers at him most of the day, but Brooke had been able to ignore it, and Sam didn’t seem at all fazed by it, but he relaxed more when Dean arrived.
Sam had been Brooke’s plus one, and Brett had insisted that Dean join them for the evening celebrations as a thank-you for his role in capturing Tommy.
“You look happy,” Brett said, breaking her contented daze, watching Sam and her Dad talking animatedly.
“I am.”
“I gotta say, I was worried for a minute there,” he admitted, and it was that which made her take her attention from Sam to look at her brother. “Taking off for a couple of weeks with a guy you’d just met. That’s not like you.”
That had been the easiest lie to tell. After all, it was a half-truth, Brett and the rest of her family believed she’d found out about the stalking, and though her relationship with Sam was relatively new at the time, she’d stayed with him while he and Dean conducted their investigation.
She shrugged, “I guess when you know, you know.”
“And do you know?” he asked, that brotherly protectiveness taking shape as skepticism.
“Yes, I do,” Brooke said without hesitation, turning to face him. “I know without a doubt that I’m in love with Sam, and he’s more than proven he feels the same. He makes me happy. He’s sweet, kind, funny, selfless, smart, generous, patient, and there’s not a disloyal bone anywhere in that six foot-three package of sexiness.”
Brett groaned, but his complaint was made through a smile, “Ugh, please spare me.”
“Mostly, though, he makes me feel safe.”
“I like him,” Brett declared. “He didn’t flinch when I gave him the ‘if you hurt my sister, I’ll murder you’ speech.” She rolled her eyes, and he grinned. “Seriously, I’m happy for you, Bee.” He pulled her into a tight hug. “And maybe, in a couple of years, I’ll be asking you if you feel like a wife yet.”
Brooke felt her cheeks heat up as he released her, but she raised her glass again, “A girl can dream.”
“What’re we dreaming about?” Sam asked as they swallowed the last of their drinks.
“You,” she admitted and felt her smile grow impossibly wider.
“Excuse me,” Brett said, walking away, “I’m going to ask my wife if she’d like to dance.”
“Congratulations again,” Sam called after him before turning his attention to Brooke. “Hey,” he smiled softly, leaning down to place a gentle kiss on her lips. “Have I told you that you look beautiful today?”
“Oh, only a hundred or so times, but what’s one more?”
“You look incredibly beautiful today.”
He kissed her again, deeper this time but still appropriate for their current location. It was sweet yet frustrating, and Brooke wanted to drag him away from prying eyes and show him how beautiful she looked under her dress, too, but it was still early, and it wouldn’t have been fair to leave Dean on his own with her family.
Expecting their moment to be interrupted by the eldest Winchester at any moment, she reluctantly pulled away from Sam. “Where’s Dean?”
He rolled his eyes as he stepped to the side to give Brooke a clear view of the bar. Dean was talking to the maid of honor, Tara, and it looked as if the honor was all hers.
“Oh, thank god,” sighed Brooke, “I thought Emily was going to try her luck with him, but Tara is so much better for him.”
“Oh, I’m sure Dean can find a way to corrupt her,” Sam chuckled. She laughed with him, their eyes locked until she started dancing on the balls of her feet. “C’mere,” he said, pulling out a chair and maneuvering her into his lap as he sat down.
“Thank you,” she muttered, “these shoes are killing me.”
They both observed the room for a moment. Brett and Olivia swayed slowly in a dance that didn’t match the beat of the song, stepping to their own personal music. Emily, Cara, and Nikki stood at the edge of the dancefloor, taking pictures. Brooke felt her smile widen, and she knew her face would ache for days to come.
“You haven’t stopped smiling all day,” Sam observed.
“Honestly, I’m not sure I could stop if I tried,” she laughed, cheeks blushing rouge. “Because a few months ago, I snuck into a stranger's car, and it’s the best decision I ever made.”
Before Sam could respond, the DJ announced it was time for the bride to throw the bouquet.
“Anyone who wants a chance at being the next one down the aisle should report to the dance floor right now,” DJ Backstreet shouted unnecessarily.
Brooke watched as everyone clambered around chairs and other guests, setting drinks down so they could rush over, but Sam broke her focus. “You not going?”
She grinned mischievously. “Is that a proposal?”
Sam scrambled for a second, and she saw his brain shortcircuit as his eyes filled with mild panic. She kissed him, nibbling his bottom lip as she pulled away, and it was enough to tell him she was simply teasing him. But he surprised her by asking, “Would you like it to be?”
She spluttered for a moment, mouth opening and closing until Sam matched her playful grin from before.
She laughed before sobering and telling him, “I wanted this.” She gestured around the room. “I planned something this grand and extravagant for my ‘big day’, no expense spared. I was, admittedly, bragging a little, but I was so excited and happy.” Her eyes involuntarily drifted toward Chris, standing beside her brother, watching the women on the dancefloor. She turned back to Sam, smiling gratefully, and his mirrored hers. “But I promise you, I’ve never been happier, felt richer, or more loved than I do when you smile at me like that.”
Slowly, they inched closer, but only a breath from connection, Sam put a hand on her cheek and held her still, leaning back slightly so he could look into her eyes. “I love you, and maybe, one day…”
“Brooke,” Emily called from across the room.
Brooke twisted in her direction, but Sam was quicker in catching her cheek with his palm and turning her to face him again.
“No more interruptions,” he said, pressing his mouth to hers.

Washington Allston (1779–1843). Diana on a Chase, 1805. o/c: 64 1/2 x 95 in. Harvard Art Museum.
In the early 19th century, American artists joined their British counterparts and embarked on the Grand Tour. Washington Allston traveled to Europe upon his graduation from Harvard in 1800, and completed this large and ambitious work while in Rome in 1805. Loosely modeled on an alpine vista that Allston sketched while traveling from France to Italy, Diana on a Chase is evocative of the classical landscapes of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. At right, the Roman goddess of the hunt and her companions wander through the vast mountainous scene.
Publicly exhibited in Rome, Diana on a Chase received glowing reviews and impressed Allston’s Romantically-minded contemporaries, including poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

From a family bible, within the genealogy held by the Plainfield Historical Society. Do not use this to prove dates and places of these generations however, as the person who wrote this was NOT alive when the events in the 1600s or 1700s happened. Still, its a guide to other records.

Also, here are documents from Richard Packard, who is on Find A Grave. I would say that you need to contact him first before using these (bio of Samuel Packard and Noah Packard). However, that last time I tried to email him, the emails bounced back. As a result, please just use these as a guide to find more sources. After all, they are heavily reliant on family genealogies and are hence skewed as a result. Other than that, I don't have anything else to share here since they are either pictures of pages in books or photos of myself and my immediate family (which went with me in this family history hunt across Western MA).
I look forward to your comments as always.

“Of Glory” by Giulio Bussi (1),Translated by Sir Aubrey de Vere (2), Samuel Waddington, comp. “The Sonnets of Europe”. 1888.
Glory, what art thou? Thee, despite of pain,
And want, and toil, the brave heart cherisheth:
Thee the pale student courts, wasting, in vain,
His primal youth, thy worshipper in death.
Glory, what art thou? Thine imperial breath
Speaks woe to all: with pangs do men obtain
An empty boon that duly perisheth,
Whose very fear of loss outweighs the gain.
Glory, what art thou then? A fond deceit,
Child of long suffering, empty air, a sweet
Prize that is sought with toil, but never found:
In life, by every envious lip denied;
In death, to ears that hear not a sweet sound:
Glory—thou fatal scourge of human pride!
I care not whose it was, mine it is now.

Notes: Count Giulio Bussi (born March 12, 1646 in Viterbo - died April 14, 1714 in the same city) was an Italian poet. Giulio Bussi was chamberlain to Pope Clement XI, and died in Viterbo on April 14, 1714. He was a member of the Academy of Arcadia in Rome. In addition to several musical dramas, comedies, and various poems, he published a verse translation of Ovid's “Heroides: Epistole eroiche d'Ovidio” translated in terza rima, Viterbe, 1703-1711, 2 parts in-12. It has been inserted, in part, into t. 24 of the large collection of translations of classical poets, printed in Milan, 1745, in-4°
(2) Sir Aubrey (Hunt) de Vere, 2nd Baronet (28 August 1788 – 5 July 1846)[3][2] was an Anglo-Irish poet and landowner. De Vere was the son of Sir Vere Hunt, 1st Baronet and Eleanor Pery, daughter of William Pery, 1st Baron Glentworth and his first wife Jane Walcott. He was educated at Harrow School, where he was a childhood friend of Lord Byron, and Trinity College, Dublin. He married Mary Spring Rice, the daughter of Stephen Edward Rice and Catherine Spring, and sister of Thomas Spring Rice, 1st Baron Monteagle of Brandon, in 1807. He succeeded to his father's title in 1818. He and Mary had five sons, including the third and fourth baronets, Aubrey and Stephen de Vere, and the poet Aubrey Thomas de Vere, and three daughters, two of whom died in infancy.
The Hunt/de Vere family estate for 300 years (1657–1957), including the period of the de Vere Baronetcy of Curragh, is the present-day Curraghchase Forest Park, in County Limerick. De Vere spent most of his life on the estate and was closely involved in its management. He suffered much trouble from his ownership of the island of Lundy, which his father, who was a notoriously poor businessman, had unwisely purchased in 1802, and which became a heavy drain on the family's finances. Sir Vere was never able to find a purchaser for Lundy, and it took his son until 1834 (or 1830) to dispose of it.
Sir Aubrey stood for election in the 1820 General Election and came in third with 2921 votes. He changed his surname from Hunt to de Vere on 15 March 1832, in reference to his Earl of Oxford ancestors, dating back to Aubrey de Vere I, a tenant-in-chief in England of William the Conqueror in 1086. He served as High Sheriff of County Limerick in 1811.
Wordsworth called his sonnets the most perfect of the age. These and his drama, “Mary Tudor: An Historical Drama”, were published by his son the poet Mr. Aubrey Thomas de Vere in 1875 and 1884.
De Vere produced numerous works over his lifetime. The most notable are: “Ode to the Duchess of Angouleme” (1815), “Julian the Apostate: A Dramatic Poem” (1822), “The Duke of Mercia: An Historical Drama” [with] “The Lamentation of Ireland, and Other Poems” (1823), “A Song of Faith: Devout Exercises and Sonnets” and his most famous work, “Mary Tudor: An Historical Drama.”
(3) Marcus Furius Camillus (possibly c. 448 – c. 365 BC[1]) is a semi-legendary Roman statesman and politician during the early Roman republic who is most famous for his capture of Veii and defence of Rome from Gallic sack after the Battle of the Allia. Modern scholars are dubious of Camillus' supposed exploits and believe many of them are wrongly attributed or otherwise wholly fictitious. The cognomen Camillus derives from the title of an aristocratic youth who helped in religious duties; it is possible that a young Camillus served in such a position. His filiation is identical with that of the consul of 413 BC, Lucius Furius Medullinus, which may indicate that Medullinus and Camillus were brothers.
Camillus is first firmly recorded as entering public office in 401 BC. He served in that year and again in 398 BC as consular tribune against the Falisci and the Capenates. Both were tribes near Rome and Veii. His first supposed office was that of censor (before having held any other public office) in the year 403 BC. He was then supposed to have, as dictator completed a campaign against Veii which saw the city captured in 396 BC. The specific story of Veii's capture in Livy is mostly legendary. After a ten-year siege (the third Veientine war) – "obviously modelled on the Greek legend of the Trojan war" – the Alban Lake rises supernaturally after a supposed prophecy of Veii's destruction in its "Books of Fate". The Romans then extirpate the prodigy by building a tunnel to drain the lake after being so instructed by the oracle at Delphi. Camillus, as commander, then persuades Veii's goddess, Juno Regina, to leave the city and move to Rome. Archaeological remains near Veii include blocked drainage tunnels from the fifth-century, which may indicate the possibility that this story in Livy arises a Romans breakthrough into the city through them.
Following the capture of the city, Livy reports that Camillus had its free population sold into slavery before the land was resettled with Roman citizens with land allotments of seven jugera. Archaeological evidence points to Romans switching quarries: after the capture of Veii's better-quality quarries, Roman structures switch largely to using stone sourced therefrom, which may suggest enslaved Veientine quarry workers. Camillus then celebrates a triumph and dedicates a temple of Juno on the Aventine. It is likely that many of the details of his return in Livy were copied from the less historically distant triumphal entrances of Scipio Africanus or Sulla.
In 394 BC, he supposedly secured the surrender of the Falisci in their main town of Falerii Veteres (modern Civita Castellana) after refusing to accept pupils from a schoolmaster as hostages. Much of the Livian narrative about the exchange with the schoolmaster is meant to recount an exemplum which stresses the importance of Roman good will (Latin: fides) and the importance of gentlemanly aristocratic behaviour. After taking Veii and Falisci, Camillus is supposed to have been prosecuted. Accounts differ: he may have been accused by the quaestors of misappropriating spoils of war or of his extravagance in purchasing four white horses for his triumph. Whatever the charge, though a quaestorian trial for misappropriation is more likely, Camillus was reportedly convicted and sent into exile. Historians believe this story of disgrace before the courts is modelled on fates of Achilles and Scipio Africanus and is meant to draw comparison with Themistocles and Gnaeus Marcius Coriolanus. The underlying source for the story likely postdates the Sullan period and is an "evident anachronism".The story of conviction, however, likely did not happen and was instead adduced to place Camillus away from Rome when the Gallic sack occurs, excusing him of any blame for Rome's defeat.
In 390 BC (Varronian), more likely in actuality 387 BC, a large group of Gauls crossed the Apennines into northern Etruria. They advanced until they reached Roman territory and there defeated Rome's army at the Battle of the Allia. In the following days, they entered Rome and sacked it. They then induced the surrender of Roman holdouts on the Capitoline hill before receiving a large ransom of gold and withdrawing north. This account is corroborated by Greek sources as early as the 4th century BC; Polybius places the sack in the same year as the Peace of Antalcidas and the siege of Rhegium.
According to Livy, after the fall of the city, Camillus is recalled from exile at Ardea by the people and appointed again as dictator – even though a consular tribune was available to nominate a dictator in the normal fashion – in the city's hour of need. Then, at the climax of the Gallic sack, when a thousand pounds of gold is being weighed out, Camillus and a hastily organised army returns and defeats the Gauls, saving the city and recovering the ransom. This story was probably a creation of Roman annalists during the first century BC; Ogilvie in his Commentary on Livy, calls it "one of the most daring fabrications in Roman history.”
Other traditions have different narratives: for example, the Livii Drusi are supposed to have by single combat with a Gaul named Drausus recovered the same ransom; Plutarch records a fragment of Aristotle asserting that "a certain Lucius" (probably a Lucius Albinius who is recorded to have secreted away the Vestal Virgins and sacred objects to Caere) having saved the city. Polybius reports that rather than being defeated by Camillus, the Gauls occupied the city for some seven months before the Romans bought them off and they departed of their own accord to deal with an invasion of their territory by the Veneti. While the literary sources assert Rome was sacked and had to be rebuilt, there is no archaeological evidence of major damage to pre-fourth century BC buildings in the forum, which indicates that the sack – if it occurred – consisted largely of stealing portable property.
After the sack, Camillus is supposed to have led the opposition to a proposal circulating among the plebs to relocate the city to Veii. This story also cannot be accepted and is more likely "a reflection of the tensions that arose concerning the distribution of the conquered territory of Veii" and to introduce "anti-plebeian elements" into the Camillan narrative. The speech does not appear in Polybius and may have been invented c. 122 BC in order to oppose by historical precedent Gaius Gracchus' proposal to establish a colony at Carthage with further embellishment of its anti-Italian themes during the time of the Social War.
Regardless, the ancient tradition records that within a year after Rome was reduced to ruins, the city had been completely rebuilt and all rebellions by Roman allies suppressed due to the extraordinary leadership of Camillus, who is therefore regarded as the city's "second founder.” In these victories, he is supposed to have dedicated three gold saucers to Juno for victory against the Volscians, Aequians, and Etruscans all the next year in 389 BC. None of these achievements are mentioned in Polybius or Diodorus.
After his probably fictitious victories, Livy next reports Rome sending Camillus to take the city of Tusculum in 381 BC. The city, already surrounded by Roman territory, immediately surrenders and the inhabitants thereof are given Roman citizenship with some level of self-rule, becoming the first Roman municipium. Later sources view this as an act of magnanimity due to the later elevated status of municipia but at the time it was likely little more than annexation; Tusculum would be one of the first to revolt in the Second Latin War. Both Camillus' role in Manlius' sedition and his later dictatorship (engaging the Gauls and plebeian reforms) may be anachronistic and fictitious insertions.
The account of Dio, coming from a Byzantine summary by Zonaras, asserts Camillus was elected dictator in 384 BC to put down the sedition of Marcus Manlius Capitolinus, who is believed to be trying to make himself king. Camillus reportedly has Manlius arrested by a slave before a trial; Manlius is convicted and then thrown from the Tarpeian Rock. No such attribution is given in the accounts of Livy and Plutarch, who note Camillus merely as one of the six consular tribunes in that year.[
According to Livy, there are ten years in which Gaius Licinius Stolo and Lucius Sextius Lateranus were elected plebeian tribunes continuously. During the last five or six years, they blocked the election of all magistrates in an attempt to pass what would become the Licinio-Sextian rogations. Camillus is alleged to have been elected dictator in 368 BC and attempted to obstruct their attempts, without success. But the next year, he is appointed dictator again. He then reconciles the plebeians and the patricians with a proposal to appoint a patrician-only praetor and curule aediles (in exchange for plebeian eligibility to the consulship); all accept the passage of the rogations and domestic harmony is restored; Camillus then constructs a temple to Concordia. "Very little of this narrative can be accepted as it stands". While Diodorus Siculus reports the length of the anarchy to have been merely one year, it is implausible that Rome could have been without magistrates for more than a few months. More damningly, a passage of Aulus Gellius' “Attic Nights” (5.4) preserves a fragment of Numerius Fabius Pictor that shows that alleged years where tribunes blocked all elections were a late annalistic invention, likely to line up Greek and Roman chronologies.
The three alleged rogations touched on a number of topics. The first rogation was a mechanism for debt relief. The second imposed a possession limit of 500 jugera of public land. The third was the reform that abolished the consular tribunate and required the election of consuls, one of which had to be a plebeian. Gary Forsythe, in “Critical history of early Rome”, accepts that the first law is consistent with voiced concerns over indebtedness from this period, that the second (limits on public land possession) is attested to in later speeches, and that the third is reflected in the consular fasti. Livy includes in the same year of this compromise, 367 BC, another alleged victory by Camillus over the Gauls. Modern scholars are especially suspicious of this report, especially because Livy notes confusion in his own sources over this victory, which is alternatively attributed to Titus Manlius Torquatus.
According the ancient Roman tradition, Camillus died during an epidemic that hit Rome in 365 BC. However, it is unlikely that any evidence of Camillus' death was known in later times: Münzer, writing in the “Realencyclopädie,” believes later annalists simply assumed Camillus died in the epidemic.
The traditional account of Camillus' life comes from Livy and Plutarch's eponymous “Life.” But these were based on a larger annalistic tradition which painted Camillus as the dominant figure in this period of history; Livy, for his part, organised his fifth and sixth books around Camillus' career (Camillus enters public office at the start of the fifth book and leaves it at the end of the sixth). Little evidence of this tradition survives, though fragments of Quintus Claudius Quadrigarius' work indicate that the myth of Camillus was well-established by the 80s and 70s BC.
The name Camillus is attested in the Etruscan François Tomb, built c. 300 BC near Vulci. One of the paintings therein describes a "Gneve Tarchunies Rumach" (probably Gnaeus Tarquinius the Roman) being killed by a "Marce Camitlnas" (possibly Marcus Camitilius or Marcus Camillus). It is not known, however, what specific legend the tomb depicts. Some scholars have suggested that Camitlnas refers to the Camillus of this article, but such attribution is problematic. Scholars believe Camillus qua person probably existed: the fasti, if believed, record his importance and influence in Roman public life at this time. But, in general, the quality of the sources – which interject "plenty of myth, embellishment, and fantasy" – led Mary Beard, in the book “SQPR,” to write "Camillus is probably not much less fictional than the first Romulus". Mommsen, writing in “Römisches Strafrecht,” called Camillus' legend "the most dishonest of all Roman legends". Tim Cornell, writing of Camillus, calls him "the most artificially contrived of all Rome's heroes". The source of scholars have suggested that Camillus emerged from a popular oral tradition which linked the names Camillus, Manlius Capitolinus, and Sulpicius to inscriptions placed on the temple of Juno Moneta (erected in 345 BC by Lucius Furius Camillus).
By the late republic, after centuries of embellishment from the fourth to the first century BC, the Romans believed that Camillus had captured Veii, saved the city from the Gallic sack, saved the city from foreign threats on all sides, opened the highest magistracies to the plebeians, ensured domestic harmony, and largely settled the struggle of the orders. Through it all, they believed he had held six consular tribunates and been dictator five times. For these reasons, he was hailed as the second founder of the city. A bronze statue of Camillus also bedecked itself on the rostra in the Forum.
His reputation by the Late Republic and Early Empire was such that Camillus was a source of exempla: fables giving lessons for Romans on how to act in line both with morals and with Roman tradition and procedures. One of the most famous ones is during Camillus' capture of Faliscii: one of their schoolmasters defects, bringing with him to the camp his pupils who are Faliscan nobles' children. Camillus, displaying his exemplary fides, has the schoolmaster reprimanded and punished by the pupils; the Faliscans then surrender the city before Camillus' good faith. Camillus is similarly alleged to have resigned a dictatorship to which he was appointed merely because of faulty procedure; Livy mentions it – an event that "almost certainly never took place" – as an example of Roman legal scruples. In all, Camillus is mentioned in Livy's “Ab urbe condita” as an example to be followed eight times, an "unusually high frequency", usually in relation to his alleged successes as a general, moderation in the face of hot-headed colleagues, and triumphant recall from exile.
The memory of Camillus became part of the public image of the first Roman emperor Augustus. The history of Livy, for example, may have been written to coincide at the beginning of a great year consisting of 360–365 years. Starting with Romulus, the cycle reaches a peak under King Servius Tullius before a second founding under Camillus, completing the cycle. The next cycle has a second peak in the time of Scipio Africanus before Augustus enters as the figure to re-found Rome again and restart the great year, with Livy suggesting that Romulus, Camillus, and Augustus are coequal heroic figures.
(4) Mariano Rossi (7 December 1731 - 24 October 1807) was an Italian painter, persisting in what had become an anachronistic Rococo style amid an ascendant neoclassical environment. His placement legions of figures in a complex scenography and quadrature recalls the work of Pietro da Cortona.
Mariano was born to poor parents in Sciacca, Sicily. He trained first in Palermo, then in Naples, and finally in Rome, where he studied under Marco Benefial. He was patronized by the illuminated charity of men of fashion (that is, wealthy individuals) He was paid 400 zecchini by the Cardinal Cardinal Bernis for a canvas depicting Joshua commanding Sun to stand still. He painted for the churches of Purgatorio and Santa Lucia in Sciacca, Sicily. In 1766, he was called to paint frescoes for the royal court in Turin. He then returned to Rome, where he painted a fresco in the grand salon of the Villa Borghese. During 1775-1779, he painted a large ceiling fresco depicting Marcus Furius Camillus Fighting Brennus and his Gauls, while Romulus Entreats Jupiter to Help Rome. The room displays some of the ancient Roman statuary, previously collected by Camillo Borghese. Other contemporary painters active in the Villa were Laurent Pecheux and Domenico de Angelis. Mariano joined the Academy of St Luke in 1776.
The Napoleonic invasion of Rome caused him to leave for Sicily. There he painted a Roger I Liberating of Sicily from the Saracens for the Palermo Cathedral. With the Bourbon restoration in Naples, he briefly painted again at the Palace of Caserta. But on moving back to Rome in 1804, he died and was buried in the church of Santa Susanna, Rome.
(5) The great hall of the Casino in the Villa Borghese, whose interiors were remodeled in a Neoclassical style by Antonio Asprucci, was adorned with a ceiling fresco that constitute a finale to the Baroque idiom, by that time altogether passé in Rome. The pictorial program takes up the theme of the classical forebears that great Roman families had so successfully invoked to create historical legitimacy for themselves. The Sicilian painter Mariano Rossi blended the legend of the victorious hero Furius Camillus with an allegory on Rome, its founders, its virtues, and its glory.

A pirate, a mysterious code, a lost treasure. This is the story of Olivier Levasseur. Captain, my captain.
Olivier’s birth in Calais during the Nine Years’ War remains shrouded in mystery. Some claim it was on May 12, others insist it was May 14, and still, others assert that even the month is uncertain. Born into a bourgeois family, he enjoyed a stable economic upbringing and was given an impeccable education. Initially, he pursued a career as an architect, at least according to official Navy sources. However, his interests soon turned to more daring pursuits.
In 1708, Olivier managed to obtain a letter of marque from Louis XIV, granting him a licence to act as a privateer. While his actions were technically sanctioned by the French crown, he appeared unconcerned by such matters. After the War of the Spanish Succession, the king ordered Olivier to return to France with his ship, but Olivier had other plans. In 1716, he rejected the king’s command and instead joined Captain Benjamin Hornigold’s pirate crew, transforming himself from a legitimate privateer to a full-fledged outlaw pirate.
Captain Hornigold was a formidable figure during the Golden Age of Piracy, and despite the era’s decline, he still managed to make a name for himself. He began his piracy career in 1713 by attacking merchant ships in the Bahamas. In no time, he gained enough power to play an active role in establishing the infamous “pirate republic” of Nassau.
In 1717, Hornigold became captain of the highly sophisticated Ranger, and it was on board this ship that he appointed Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, as his second-in-command. Hornigold’s influence continued to grow, until he ultimately accepted the general amnesty offered by George I, and turned his focus to pirate hunting. His first target was his former ally, Edward Teach, who tragically died in battle without being captured.
Despite his success, Captain Hornigold’s life came to a sunned end in 1719 when he was killed in a devastating shipwreck. His death marked the end of an era, but his legend as a daring and influential pirate captain lives on.
Yet, these tales of Captain Hornigold’s exploits were merely a tangent to the uncertainty that Olivier faced upon his arrival in 1716. Levasseur proved to be an exceptional pirate and a valued shipmate. In fact, he quickly earned two nicknames, The Buzzard and The Mouth, due to the swift and merciless manner in which he dealt with his adversaries.
The crew of Hornigold, as we already saw, began to disintegrate after a year of successful piracy, and Olivier found himself briefly travelling with Samuel Bellamy, who became known as “The Prince of Pirates” and is still remembered as the wealthiest pirate of all time.
The encounters with powerful personalities that Olivier experienced throughout his pirate career undoubtedly provided him with a wealth of valuable experience. When he finally ventured out on his own, his efforts proved fruitful as he attacked and captured numerous ships while sailing southward along the Brazilian coast aboard La Louise, a frigate the had stolen to start his true pirate career. However, his success was short-lived, as on March 9th, 1718, La Louise was caught in a fierce storm and sank, taking 80 crew members with it. Olivier managed to save himself on a small brigantine that was serving as an escort and made his way to Sao Francisco do Sul, where he wasted no time in plundering a ship full of flour to feed his remaining crew. The journey continued northward, with raid and robberies punctuating their progress, until they finally reappeared in Jun aboard a small ship that they had stone while sailing up the coast of Brazil.
It was when Olivier arrived in the Caribbean that his luck almost ran out. The HMS Scarborough came close to capturing him, but they narrowly escaped once again, this time aboard a small sloop that he had managed to load with much of the treasure he had accumulated. After replenishing his crew and restoring command, the raids continued, with Oliver’s pirates not only targeting numerous ships but also destroying the fortress of Ouidah, leaving little more than smouldering ruins in their wake.
The year 1720 brought a turn of events for Olivier as he faced yet another shipwreck, this time along the treacherous Mozambique Channel, leaving him stranded on the remote island of Anjouan. The injury he sustained in his eye, a scar from a previous encounter, had rendered him completely blind in that eye. Olivier was forced to wear a bandage over his eye, a symbol that would forever be associated with piracy. Despite his misfortune, Olivier refused to give up and continued his pursuit of treasure and adventure, always one step ahead of the law.
Despite facing numerous setbacks throughout his pirate career, Olivier Levasseur did not let adversity defeat him. Instead, he established a base on the island of Sainte-Marie, off the coast of Madagascar, and recruited a formidable crew of over 750 men across three ships. Their first target was the Laccadive Islands, a cluster of small islands with ample opportunities for piracy. They sized all valuables in sight and ultimately sold their loot to the Dutch for an astounding sum of 75,000 pounds, a fortune in those times.
Olivier’s Jolly Roger, with its black skeleton on a white background, becomes a symbol of fear and recognition across the seas. It was rare for Jolly Rogers to be made with a white field and not with inverted colours.
But Olivier’s successes continued. In fact, he managed to carry out one of the most sensational raids of his career. On a fateful day, Olivier and John Taylor set their sights on the Virgin of Cape, a galleon carrying the treasures of the bishop of Goa and the viceroy of Portugal, who had made the ill-advised decision to travel together towards Lisbon. It happened on April 26, 1721, a date that would go down in history as one of the most sensational hits in piracy. The two pirate captains approached the Island of Reunion, then called the Island of Bourbon, and launched an attack on the galleon.
With a stroke of luck, the crew had thrown all 72 of its cannons overboard during a storm, leaving the ship defenceless. Olivier’s pirates boarded the ship without firing a shot and seized the incalculable treasure on board.
On board the Virgin of Cape, Olivier and his men find a true fortune: gold, silver, precious stones, and the most exquisite fabrics. The value of the loot was estimated at around 100 million pounds, a sum that was almost unheard of at the time. The success of the operation was not only due to the favourable circumstances but also the tactical skills of Olivier and his crew. They knew how to approach the ship discreetly, without attracting attention, and how to take control of it.
The daring act of Olivier and his crew has been enshrined in the annals of history and literature, with none other than Robert Louis Stevenson immortalizing it in his classic novel Treasure Island. The feat is attributed to the beloved character of Long John Silver, forever cementing the legacy of Olivier and his fellow pirates in the realm of mystery and adventure.
The spoils of the capture were nothing short of legendary. The haul included gold and silver bars, chests filled with gold guineas, precious diamonds and pearls, exquisite silk fabrics, masterpieces of art, and even sacred objects from the Cathedral of Goa. Among the treasures was the fabled Flaming Cross of Goa, a massive golden slab, adorned with precious stones, measuring over two meters in length. It was so weighty that it took the combined strength of three men to drag it aboard Olivier’s ship.
The loot was so astonishingly abundant and incongruous that the pirates, in an unprecedented and unique move, did not even bother to rob the passengers of the galleon, since their pockets were already filled to the brim with wealth beyond imagination.
After the treasure was divided, every member of Olivier’s crew received a staggering amount of wealth. Each pirate was entitled to 50,000 pounds in gold guineas and 42 diamonds per person. Olivier, being the captain and leader, kept the magnificent gold cross as his own share of the loot. The galleon, formerly known as the Virgin of Cape, was re-christened The Victorious and became Olivier’s new flagship.
As Olivier began to contemplate the amnesty offered to all pirates on the Indian Ocean in 1724, he sent a representative to discuss the terms with the governor of the island of Reunion. However, the authorities demanded their share of the loot, causing Olivier to refuse the offer and disappear with his treasure to an unknown location in Seychelles.
The idea of pirates burying their treasure is a romanticized notion popularized by literature and movies, and it rarely happened in reality. However, in the case of Olivier and his legendary haul, it seems plausible that he may have stashed some away as a bargaining chip in case he needed to negotiate with the French authorities for his freedom. Unfortunately, negotiations proved fruitless. In 1725, Olivier attempted to make an honest living in Madagascar but was soon recognized by locals and drawn back into piracy.
The story of Olivier took a dark turn as he was eventually caught near Fort Dauphin, Madagascar, and transported to Saint-Denis, the capital of Reunion, to face a grim fate. The once-great pirate, who had eluded capture for so long, was now to be hanged for his crimes.
The story of Olivier Levasseur and his pirate crew is one filled with robberies, looting and a treasure so large that it seems almost mythical. But the true mystery lies in what happened to that treasure after Levasseu’s capture. Despite being subjected to torture and threats, he refused to divulge its location. However, in a moment of solitude, he wrote it down on a sheet of paper… in code. As he stood on the scaffold with only the executioner for company, he wore a necklace containing a cryptogram with 17 lines. He tore it off and threw it into the crown, shouting, “My treasure is yours, you who will understand!” And though the necklace is lost to time, the cryptogram remains. It has been verified as authentic by the British Museum. But what does it reveal? The answer to that question remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of pirate lore.
It was a chance discovery that could potentially unravel a centuries-old mystery. In 1923, a woman named Rose Savy stumbled upon some enigmatic carvings on the rocks of Bel Ombre beach on the island of Mahé in Seychelles during low tide. The symbols etched onto the rocks were intriguing: a dog, a snake, a turtle, a horse, a fly, two hearts united, a lock, an urn, a young woman and the head of a man. It didn’t take long for word to spread, and a notary in Victoria immediately suspected that the carvings were linked to piracy. This led to two possible connections – one of which was the treasure of Bernardin de L’Estang, another infamous pirate who claimed to have discovered part of Olivier’s riches after his death.
Further investigations led to the discovery of two letters written by Olivier himself, one to his nephew and the other to his brother. In the letters, he spoke of having collected several treasures and losing many documents during a shipwreck. He also mentioned a map from 1735 bearing the inscription “property of La Buse (Levasseur)”. The letters contained a key to the combinations and other documents necessary to find the remaining four treasures. Olivier’s dream was for his brother’s eldest son to search for the treasure and rebuild their home. The commander had the three documents required to fulfil Olivier’s dream.
The search for Olivier Levasseur’s treasure continued to haunt the notary and Rose Savy. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to unearth any sign of the elusive riches. However, they did find something else – two coffins containing the remains of two pirates, easily identified by the gold rings in their left ears. A third body was also found, without a coffin. Many believe that these were the men who aided Olivier in hiding the treasure and were killed so that its location would remain a mystery forever. The discovery only deepened the mystery of the treasure, leaving everyone to wonder what secrets the graves might hold, and what else remained hidden on the island of Mahé.
The hunt for pirate treasures on the island of Mahé in Seychelles has been a never-ending adventure. For centuries, treasure hunters have scoured the area for the elusive fortune, but it remains hidden. One of the most dedicated seekers was Reginald Cruise-Wilkins, who spent years deciphering clues left by Rose Savy.
Reginald believed that the code to finding the treasure was connected to the Zodiac, the Key of Solomon, and the 12 labours of Hercules. He claimed that to locate the treasure, one had to complete 12 tasks in a specific order, but he died in 1977 without having deciphered the final part of the code. His son John inherited his father’s dream and continued the search for the pirate treasure.
John is convinced that the treasure chamber is buried and protected by the tides and that it can only be found by approaching with caution. He has already completed 10 of the 12 tasks, and he is sure that the treasure is located in a specific and untouched spot. He estimates the value of the treasure to be around 1.4 billion dollars, and he sees it as the “Holy Grail of treasure hunters.”
However, John’s excavations have been blocked by the government since 2009. They insist that he must obtain a license to dig, and whatever he finds, 50% belongs to the state. But John is undeterred and is getting ready for a new research. He is sure that he has figured out where the cave containing the treasure is, but he fears that there is still one last complicated trap inside.
The treasure chest remains hidden, but John remains determined. He hopes that, in memory of all the treasure-thirsty pirates before him and after so much sacrifice and hard work, he will eventually open it. It’s a sentiment that he believes Olivier would agree with.

“Two Charges Are Laid Against Bank Robber,” North Bay Nugget. November 28, 1932. Page 1 & 2. ---- City Police Recover All of Money From Bandit --- Samuel Essa Ayoub, Late of Kirkland Lake, Held For Hold-up ---- HE IS BADLY WOUNDED ---- Constable Belanger Shot in Making Arrest; Was Quick Cleanup ---- Cornered by a police posse within a few miles of the scene of his daring escapade and nearly ten hours after he had startlingly held up the staff of the Bank of Montreal on Saturday at noon and made away with approximately $5,000, Samuel Rasa Ayoub, 26, Assyrian, giving Kirkland Lake as his home address was securely in police hands at 10 o'clock Saturday night and with $4836, practically all the haul, recovered.
He was taken on the CPR tracks, three miles west of Meadowside and only after a gun fight, in which the now prisoner had three bullets pumped into his body, and Constable J. D. Belanger of the North Bay city force suffered two slight wounds from the hold-up man's fire. Constable John Pilgrim was responsible for subduing the desperate gunman, while he was locked in Constable Belanger’s arms.
Ayoub is now a compulsory patient in the Civic hospital and under close police surveillance. This afternoon Chief Constable William Clark reported his condition as favorable and his chances of recovery very good. It will be a week or ten days before he is able to answer a court summons. Chief Clark estimated.
He has been charged by Chief Clark with “bank robbery while armed and wounding a police officer in the execution of duty."
The arrest followed a tip given the police by Austin Lariviere, North Bay, who saw the man as he emerged from the woods bordering the lake near Yellek, approximately five miles east of the city, and crossed the CPR tracks enroute to the highway. Mr. Lariviere was loading wood on a truck parked on the North Bay— Sturgeon Falls highway when he saw the man proceeding towards the Miller sawmill camp. He noted his appearance fitted the description of the bank robber and, after watching him enter the camp, came to the city to report to the police. It was about 5:44 and dusk was falling. It was only when the man crossed In front of the beam from the headlight did he get a good view of him.
Joint Operation The capture climaxed the closing of a trap thrown out by seven police officers. They were Deputy Chief Dennis, who directed the successful hunt, Sergeant Frank Michaud, Constables J. D. Belanger and John Pilgrim of the city force and Provincial Constable N. C. Smaill, North Bay, and Provincial Constables Campaeu and Chief Constable Leclair, Sturgeon Falls.
Taklng up the tip given by Lariviere,   they assembled at Yellek, and there parted to form a net. Deputy Chief Dennis Sergeant Michaud and Provincial Constable Smaill took to the CNR tracks to visit a pump house and water tank. The Sturgeon Falls officers took Constable Belanger and Pilgrim by car to within three miles of Sturgeon Falls to start them east on the CPR tracks. Provincial Officer Campeau and Leclair stayed on the highway to patrol it east to Meadowside where the officers were to meet.
When about three miles from Meadowside, Constables Belanger and Pilgrim came face to face with the robber, who was headed for Sturgeon Falls. Owing to the inky darkness, the officers did not see their man until within a few feet of him. When they came abreast, Constable Belanger grabbed him, at the same time saying “Hold on there." Immediately the robber had his automatic in play and had fired two shots, both hitting Belanger before his gun jammed and Constable Pilgrim had an opportunity to use his gun without endangering the life of his fellow officer.
Three shots had been pumped into the robber before he gave in, with the remark "You have me dead and I have all the money." The scuffling finished to the side of the railway track and, after the robber had been throw,n he was disarmed of three guns and handcuffed. Constable Belanger stood guard over him, while Constable Pilgrim summoned the other members of the posse. On Sunday afternoon, Provincial Constable Smaill visited the scene of the gun fight and found a long dagger, which the robber had either thrown away or lost in the scuffle, and a bullet-pierced silk handkerchief, presumably carried by Ayoub.
Questioned by Chief Clark in the hospital, Ayoub stated he proceeded west on Main street after leaving the bank. It waspreviously held that he went east to turn south on Ferguson street. He turned south from Main to Fraser street and continued to Oak, to hurry west along Oak street and take the CPR track to Mons Park where he entered the bush.
Caught Near Meadowside The capture was effected by Constables Joseph D. Belanger and John Pilgrim, two of a squad of seven who hemmed in the foolhardy bandit within a three-mile square area early Saturday night. The meeting took place on the CPR tracks, three miles west of Meadowside and about 15 miles west of North Bay, and the resultant exchange of bullets came close to costing Constable Belanger his life. He suffered a wound on the left side of the abdomen when struck by a glancing bullet and had the fleshy part of his left forearm punctured by another from the hold-up man's automatic revolver. Only the fact that the bandit's gun chocked after the second shot saved the constable from fatal injuries, as the shots he received were fired when in grips with the now prisoner. Constable Pilgrim inflicted tho wounds on the hold-up man and with deadly intent. He had some difficulty in firing without endangering his fellow-officer. His first shot grazed the prisoner's right side causing a skin-deep wound. The second entered the left side, directly above the hip bone, and embedded the bullet in the organs. The third was fired at the head and passed from the left side of the back of the neck through the left cheek.
When his clothing was searched at the police station, he was found to be in possession of $4,836 in bils, in denominations ranging from $I to $50. All but $16 of the amount taken from the bank was recovered in the $4,836 found on the prisoner. He had previously been relieved of three guns, one of which he took from the bank teller’s cage. The guns used in the hold-up were a 25-calibre automatic and a 38-calibre revolver. The bank gun was of 32-calibre. The automatic was used in the gun fight with Constables Belanger and Pilgrim and when examined at the police station, was found to be jammed with a shell, the result of the second shot fired at Constable Belanger.
Likely To Recover The prisoner, giving the name of Samuel Essa Ayoub, and Kirkland Lake as his parental home, is now in the Civic Hospital and with good chances of making a complete recovery. He was attended by Dr. G. V. Smith at the police station on Saturday night and examined at the hospital the same night.
Questioned soon after being brought to the police station, the man demurred at revealing his identity but later gave his name and his place of residence. He appeared to ha resigned to the fata that awaits him and remarked that “he expected to die and that the police had all the money” He winced two or three times as Dr Smith with the eld of Sergeant Frank Michaud applied first aid to his head wound but other than for that was apparently unexcited. He only complained of a wound In his left hand, pierced by the bullet which entered his body. With his wounds dressed, he was on the way to the hospital at midnight within twelve hours after his daring escapade and with his life hanging in the balance.
Immediately following the report of the robbery, police here threw out a net over this section of the province, making it practically impossible for the man wanted to make good his escape. Provincial police headquarters at both Haileybury and Barrie were communicated with and railway police notified. As a result, every highway in all directions was watched, in event an attempt was made by the man to get away by car, while, at the same time, both out-bound freight and passenger trains were scrutinized.
In the meantime, the city police here concentrated on making a complete and thorough check-up within the city limits and left not a stone unturned. In the event he might have been in hiding locally, taxi stands were checked, in case the robber might have hired a car to assist him in getting away and all hotels and boarding houses were visited, among other measures taken.
Knew Identity Quickly Police learned shortly after the robbery that Ayoub had departed from Sudbury the night previous, and this was confirmed yesterday by a passenger of the same train who told the authorities of having conversed with the man during the trip to North Bay. His actions were reported to be quite normal.
Arriving here, Ayoub had spent the night at a room in the Canadian Cafe, police ascertained. Several citizens were found after the hold-up who had talked with him in the morning and these assisted in giving the police an excellent description to work with.
Ayoub, who was well known at Sudbury and several other northern towns, had sold out a hosiery business at the Nickel City about two years ago and discontinued a dry goods business at Kirkland Lake last summer, the prisoner informed police yesterday. He had never been a resident of North bay.
The climax of this, the first bank hold-up in the history of North Bay, clicked in every detail with the description of the robber and his movement before the incident. Fifteen minutes after learning of the robbery, Chief Clark and Deputy Chief Dennis knew the man they wanted an immediately set about in a methodical manner to effect his capture.
Descriptions were flashed to all centres in surrounding districts and the entire force turned loose to scour the city. It was the belief of the police that the man worked single-handed and without the aid of an automobile. This was established in the unraveling of the case.
Get Direct Tip Shortly after 6 o'clock Saturday, the police were tipped off that the wanted man was having dinner at Miller's sawmill camp at Yellek, about nine miles west of the city. The available officers were quickly assembled and simultaneously officers from Sturgeon Falls and here set out in three cars for Yellek. Reaching the camp they learned the man had pulled out after being fed and his clothing dried. He paid the women in charge of the camp dining room $2 for the meal.
The police then set about to hem in their prey. Provincial Constable Campeau and Chief Leclair, Sturgeon Falls, took Constables Belanger and Pilgrim up the highway toward Sturgeon Falls and dropped them off at the Indian Reserve, three miles east of Sturgeon Falls, with instructions to pace the C.P.R. tracks towards North Bay. The Sturgeon Falls officers were detailed to patrol the highway eastward. Deputy Chief J. J. Dennis, Sergeant Michaud, and Provincial Constable Smaill took to the CNR. track at Meadowside to search a railway pumping station and water tank a little distance west.
Constables Belanger and Pilgrim had proceeded three or four miles on the CPR line when they saw a lone man walking towards them. Due to darkness, the officers and the hold-up man were within a few feet of one another before they became aware of his presence. As they came abreast, Constable Belanger caught the hold-up man by the front of the coat and immediately the latter had  his gun in action. In the the scuffling that followed, the prisoner fired twice, one bullet grazing the officer’s side and the other piercing his left forearm before his gun jammed. Due to Constable Belanger’s body being in contact with the bandit, Constable Pilgrim withheld his fire until they separated a little. He then fired to graze the prisoner's right side. His second shot pierced his left hand and entered the body directly above the hip bone. His third shot, fired at the head, struck the back of the neck on the left side and passed out through the cheek. Despite these wounds, the robber resisted the efforts of the officers to render him powerless until he collapsed in Constable Belanger’s arms.
Officer and robber rolled down from the track to a shallow ditch with the former maintaining mastery. After subduing their captive by relieving him of his guns, three in number, and handcuffing him securely, Constable Pilgrim left to summon the other members of the squad. In the meantime. Provincial Constable Csmpeau and Chief Leclair, Sturgeon Falls, came along with a car and stopped when signaled by Constable Belanger. Constable Pilgrim returned with Deputy Chief Dennis, Sergeant Michaud and Provincial Constable Smaill. All assisted in placing the wounded prisoner in the Sturgeon Fells car to bring him to the city.
Had No Car Admissions made to the police by the prisoner substantiate the report that he worked alone and without a car as a means of transport. After clearing from the bank he hastily proceeded wet on Main street to Fraser and down that thoroughfare to Oak street which he followed to take to CPR tracks in the extreme west end of the city. He left the tracks for the bus at Lions Park and became lost after entering the thickly wooded area bordering the lake. He wandered aimlessly until about 5.45 p.m., when he came out at Yellek, cold, wet, and nearly famished from hunger. It was dark but he found direction by lights showing from the Miller sawmill camp. Reaching the camp he knocked at the door and asked the woman who answered if he might buy a meal.
While enroute to the camp, he was seen by a man working along the highway and from his appearance was immediately suspected as the hold-up man who the same day make a clean getaway after sticking up the Bank of Montreal staff. The man immediately proceeded to the city and informed the police.
Transferred Account Ayoub first appeared at the bank shortly before closing time when he made preliminary arrangements with Clare McGowan, ledger-keeper, to transfer an account to the North Bay branch. It is believed he purposed carrying out his stick-up plan at that time, but was discouraged by the presence of customers. He was issued a slip after giving the name of L. Fraser and a supposedly fictitious account number.
He returned after the bank doors had closed at 12 o’clock and was standing at the door when Mr. McGowan was passing out to go to luncheon. He gained admittance by representing to Mr. McGowan that he made an error in giving the number of his account in another branch.
Immediately, he met D. T. McGuire, manager, in the latter’s office, he flashed two guns and in a threatening voice ordered him to back up through the door into the main office. He then herded up the members of the staff present, L. D. Roy, teller, Jim Hatcher and Miss Leone Burton and ordered the four into the vault. When the door wouldn’t close tightly, due to the combination being thrown locked, he directed Mr. McGuire to unlock it. By stating that the combination was only known to the absent clerk, Mr. McGuire saved the staff from being locked in the airtight vault.
Baffled in his aim to silence the staff in this way, the hold-up man backed into the teller's cage all the while training his guns on the captives, and with a backhand motion scooped up the bills contained in the top drawer and picked up the teller’s revolver. The money he rammed in his overcoat pocket.
Leaving the cage, he drove the staff at the point of his guns into the cage and after slamming the door locked took the keys. He had previously demanded Miss Burton to give him the keys of the office and when Mr McGuire directed the girl to disregard the order, the bandit drew a long knife and threatened to use It unless his order was quickly obeyed.
Satisfying himself that the staff was securely held in the cage, the hold-up man proceeded to leave the office by the staff entrance but was baffled when he couldn't operate the latch. He then moved out through the manager's office, keeping his guns trained on the cooped-up staff until he made a bolt for the front office entrance.
Immediately after he left the office, the staff unlocked the cage door from the inside end. Mr. McGuire called the police station. It was then about 12;15. Miss Burton then told Mr. McGuire that she had seen the man speaking to Mr. McGowan, the ledger keeper, shortly before closing time. She was directed to get Mr McGowan, who was then at the Arcadian Grill.
Constable J. D. Belanger was alone at the police station when the call came in from the bank. He hurried down while a civilian who was in the office at the time, summoned Chief Clark and Deputy Chief Dennis by phone. Constable Belanger did not notice the man while he was enroute to the bank.
Was Not Masked. The hold-up man was unmasked while putting on his act. For this reason the bank staff was able to study him closely and give the police a good description. He wore a dark overcoat, a brown Fedora, a light suit and a brown scarf. He had a swarthy complexion, and a mole on the right side of the nose enabled the police to fit the description with the movements of a man who visited a number of places early in the day.
The city police force was quickly on the scene and, in a few minutes, notice of the hold-up and a complete description of the man was telegraphed or phoned to all points along the railways and highways. This net was perfected in less than an hour. In the meantime, city and provincial police were spread throughout the city to check on likely haunts and on taxi stands to learn whether its man had attempted a getaway by automobile.
Furnished Description Sudbury Nov 28— (Special)— Within an hour of learning of the details of the robbery, Sudbury police were able to furnish the North Bay police department with a detailed description of the man who, Saturday afternoon, held up and robbed the branch of the Bank of Montreal, even to the detail of a small mole on his cheek. Within three hours they knew the man's name.
Sudbury detectives learned that a man, giving his name as L. Fraser, the same name the bandit signed when he opened an account in the North Bay bank, registered at the New American Hotel here on November 24, 25, and 26. Ha was at the hotel early Saturday morning but not later in the forenoon. The man wore a brown overcoat. brown hat. and scarf, similar to the clothing worn by the bandit, and the clerk was able to give a complete description of him.
Later a guest informed the police that he had seen Sam Ayoub around the New American hotel, and Ayoub’s dress corresponded with Fraser’s. It was also discovered that Ayoub once was known as Fraser Ayoub. He is also said to have used the name Essa while in Sudbury.
Known at Kirkland Kirkland Lake, Nov. 28. - Police here expressed the belief that Sam Ayoub, arrested and charged with robbing the Bank of Montreal at North Bay, Saturday, is one of the men who robbed Sylvester Brothers store here October 25 and escaped with the $650 payroll.
Police recalled they had questioned Ayoub at his hotel here the day after the robbery and, going back to question him further, discovered he had left town.
At that time they arrested Fred Lauzon, Ayoub's friend, but were unable to establish a case against him. Lauzon was sentenced to three months in jail for vagrancy.
Chief of Police Shane said Ayoub had several aliases, which included the names Semord, Essa and Fraser. He was a poolroom habitue and had been out of work for considerable time.
Shane said a charge of robbery while armed would be laid against Ayoub in connection with the store hold-up here.
In that robbery, two men entered the store, wearing masks, and while one covered the three clerks, the other scooped up $650 from the cash register.
Bottom Left Image caption: “Still snarling his defiance through a heavy automatic, Samuel Ayoub, 26-year-old Kirkland Lake dry-goods merchant, was caught by North Bay police after a ten-hour hunt and charged with the hold-up of the North Bay branch of the Bank of Montreal. As the hunt neared its climax, Constable Joseph Belanger (3) was wounded through the arm by a bullet from Ayoub’s gun. The search was launched after the former merchant had walked out from the Bank of Montreal at North Bay on Saturday at noon with about $5000, shown in (2), under his arm. (1) is Constable Pilgrim who was with Constable Belanger when the arrest was made. (4) shows Ayoub’s’ guns. Miss Burton, who followed Ayoub out of the bank and notified police, is shown in 5) while 6) is the knife with which Ayoub to said to have menaced members of the bank staff.”

Selected content about the Packards from Grandpa Don Plefka (Harry Ronald Cecora)
This is quoted from his posts on the Packard family line and Packard family mysteries. It has been quoted here in relevant sections and is used here under the fair use exception to US copyright law.
The Packard family line
The surname Packard is French. It means the descendant of Bacard (combat, strong).(Source: New Dictionary of American Family Names by Elsdon C. Smith. New York: Gramercy Publishing Company, 1988). The name Packard appears in English records as early as the beginning of the fourteenth century. The name was well established in East Anglia long before Samuel's birth...In early Norman records is found Ralph, Engeram, Richard, Peter, Geoffrey, and Walter Picard in Normandy from 1180-1196. Then we find a Robert Pichard in England circa 1198; and a John Pikert circa 1274. How and if these early Picards/Pikerts relate to later generations is not known...Richard G. Packard of Mesa, AZ, said "Almost all of the Packards in America descend from Samuel and Elizabeth Packard who came to America in 1638"... George Packard Married Mary Wither (1574 - 1652) and were the parents of Samuel Packard. George Packard (1579?-1623) was a yeoman farmer. He had a farm called "Colman's" in Whitsungrene (Whitsun Green), England. Colmans is now called "Red House." George Packard married Mary Wyther, daughter of Thomas Wither (d. 1595) and Margaret --- his wife. Mary Wither was baptized in 1574 in Woolpit, and died August 19, 1652. Stonham Aspal is in the diocese of Norwich in Norfolk County, England. The will of George Packard was dated December 1, 1623, and he was buried December 14, 1623 in Stonham, Suffolk County, England. Mary's will was dated August 11, 1649 and was proven on August 19, 1652. She mentions her daughters, Mary, Frances Standley; her sons, John and George; and her grandchildren Mary Standley and Margaret Smyth...Richard Packard has given permission for me to publish these photos There is substantial documentation of the Packard Families of Massachusetts. The book "Mayflower Families - Through Five Generations" lists many of them but does not go beyond the mid 1700's. US census reports do not list individual family members by name until the mid 1800's. The Document "Early English Packards" lists records of wills and court documents and parish records back to the year 1311. In his document titled "Samuel Packard 1612 - 1684" Richard states that Samuel was the fourth son and as such would not have inherited land. That was rectified by going to the American colonies where land was there for the taking...Samuel Packard (1612-1684) married Elizabeth (Family unknown) (1614 - 1694) in about 1635 at Stonham, Aspal Parish, Suffolk, England. With their two year old daughter Mary they emigrated to Plymouth Massachusetts Colony in 1638 on the ship Diligent from Ipswich, England, where, according to an article by Karle S. Packard, they were the parents of 13 additional children. 11 were born in Hingham, Mass. and 2 in Weymouth, Mass. before they relocated to Bridgewater, Mass. According to Karl S. Packard...Samuel and his sons were soldiers in King Philip's War, a bloody conflict with the native Americans, under Captain Benjamin Church."
Packard Family Mysteries
"I have given that name [the American Dark Ages] to the period between 1800 and 1849 because the records of the US Census only gives the name of the head of the household and the number of people, male or female, free or slave, in various age groups. The names of wives and children were not recorded. There were no civil birth records or death records. This dearth of information makes research into the lives of people who lived in this era very difficult, if not impossible. Both Shepard L Packard, on my mother's side, and Eliza S Hunt, on my Father's side were born and led their early lives during these "Dark Ages"."
Note: This was originally posted on October 26, 2018 on the main Packed with Packards WordPress blog (it can also be found on the Wayback Machine here). My research is still ongoing, so some conclusions in this piece may change in the future.
