“Do you think I’m gonna get to meet Hawkeye?” Kate asks excitedly, ignoring the throat-clearing cough from Clint. She looks over at Bucky. “Maybe you’ll get to meet Cap, Buck. He’ll fall in love with you like you always dream he does when you stare at the shirtless calendar he did that you somehow never seem to change from July of three years ago.”

It’s a lot harder for Bucky to ignore Clint’s laughter than it was for Kate to ignore his coughing. “I’m a busy man, Kate, keeping this place afloat. I don’t always have time to change the calendar or even buy new ones for the current year. Besides, I bought that calendar to help out homeless vets.”

The weight of the shelf is suddenly off of Bucky’s shoulders, and he looks up into the cutest gap-tooth smile he’s ever seen and two gorgeous brown eyes, pretty enough to make him just melt.

“I’m sure they appreciate your support,” Captain America says, setting the shelf back upright with ease. “If I do another calendar this year would you remember to buy one?”

Bucky tries for suave but his voice comes out a little too far on the side of squeaky. “It wouldn’t hurt.”

“Sammy?” Peter asks in the adorable way he likes to ask preparing his dad for multiple questions at a time, “What’s the Aurora Borealis?” Peter asks, whispery as the 6-year-old only just lost his first front tooth. 

Sam smiles tossing the stir fry in the pan, re-heating the leftover thai food, and thinking over his answer, it wouldn’t be nearly as good of an answer as Tony would give but he could figure something out. He takes his time watching the pan before being assured and turning back to Peter, “It’s a pretty, natural, light show which shows splashes arts of colour in the night sky,” he smiles hoping that satisfies the younger man. Clarifying he adds, “It’s fades of blue, purple and pink.” 

Nodding along Peter seems engaged with the explanation but Sam already expects the follow-up question, “where is it? Daddy says it’s really far away so we can’t go visit, but my teacher said the polar bears could see it.” It’s funny watching the way that Peter looks around the room as his train of thought changes, swinging his small legs on the bar stool. 

Rolling his eyes Sam understands Tony’s answer but it is not exactly true, and Sam promised that he would always tell Peter the truth, “we could go see it, they can see it in Australia and your Dad has been there for work before so it isn’t completely outrageous.” Peter’s mouth rolls open at the shocking news that they could see it.

“That’s where the koala bears live right? I guess that makes sense why my teacher was talking about polar bears,” Peter reasons out loud and Sam laughs, “but a koala isn’t a bear, dad says it’s a marsupial.”

Sam has to hand it to the kid he definitely has his father’s smarts, but he hopes that he has left a lasting impact on Peter, even just as ‘Sammy’ or ‘daddy’s boyfriend’, or the guy that is reheating thai food at midnight because he can’t resist Peter’s puppy dog eyes.  

There is a lot of laughter to be had when Sam and Peter are together in the kitchen if it’s 11 pm or 10 am. Sam and Peter love the kitchen, it is the time they get to bond between the two of them, Sam working behind the island and Peter swinging his legs from a bar stool on the other side. Tony while not a fan of the kitchen loves to observe and hear the laughter that his two favourite people have inside it. 

Like right now as Tony can hear the loud giggling from his son and the encouragement Sam is given making hot chocolates and encouraging FRIDAY to put on Disney’s Princess and The Frog to go along with their midnight snack. It makes Tony smile knowing Peter is taken care of, Sam puts his finger on his lips gesturing the Peter as he sees Tony walking in. 

“What are you still doing up so late mister!” Tony sneaks up on Peter tickling his sides to encourage even louder laughter from his son, “I vividly remember saying goodnight to you at dinner time,” Tony makes a pointed look towards Sam. Sam just shrugs in response a smile stays on his face watching Tony and Peter together, father and son. 

Peter doesn’t stop laughing and giggling, now because he knows he’s been caught and it makes him excited. He attempts puppy dog eyes at Tony but it doesn’t seem as genuine as the ones he used on Sam at bedtime. It’s easy for Sam to respond happily, “Mr Peter here thought that if Daddy,” Sam gives a pointed look to Tony, “got to stay up all night then why couldn’t he.” It is a good reason but the look that Tony gives the thai food that Sam is preparing says otherwise, “I thought I would make us a midnight snack, maybe you need some too,” Sam pushes one of the plates towards Tony, he made 3 for a reason. 

Tony just rolled his eyes, “he tricked you with puppy dog eyes,” and this time the pointed look is directed at Peter, who is choosing at this time to look especially cute, platypus plushy tucked into his arms.

Sam nods defeated, “of course he did.” 

Nodding Tony knows the pain that Peter’s puppy dog eyes have on people, him especially, and the only one it can’t trick is Pepper, which makes sense after dealing with Tony for so long. Tony picks Peter up from the bar stool and Sam follows along with Peter’s plate of thai food in his hand.

Peter is happy to sit on the couch with his platypus plushy, an ironman pillow, and his thai food, Tiana listening to her dad read them princess stories playing on the TV. 

“Why thai this late,” Tony asks knocking Sam’s shoulder as they sit back down at the island, far enough that they can see Peter, but Peter can’t hear them, “I thought you would make him popcorn, or cookies, so late at night, especially with a hot chocolate.” Sam shrugs happy to just watch Peter be happy and see as he slowly tries to keep himself awake by eating more. 

Sam thinks it over because he really has no reason, other than the smile it brings to Tony’s face when he sees it and can watch Peter have that same smile on a smaller scale. It’s an adorable response, one that can rival Peter’s “it made me think of you,” he hugs Tony, arms wrapping around his partner’s waist, “I’ve missed you.”

Tony loves Sam and loves the way that Sam spends time with Peter when he’s away, Sam really is his better half. Tony kisses Sam’s cheek, leaning back into the embrace his partner is giving, “I missed you too.” Being away, off and on is, unfortunately, Tony’s line of work and since Peter, he does it a lot less and always makes sure not to come in between Sam and missions, but coming home is his favourite part of being away. He gets to come back and see Sam’s happy demeanour and Tony’s favourite boy’s largest smile in the world, even if he just comes up from the lab. 

Smiling Sam reveals the other things that they had been talking about that night, finishing by saying, “I think we need to take a trip to Australia.” Tilting his head Tony is vividly confused, “any reason why?” Sam takes a beat before looking over to a sleepy Peter and Tony’s vision follows.

Tony rolls his eyes turning back to face Sam, Sam admits, “Your son has suddenly taken an interest in the northern lights and koala bears and there is nowhere else you can get both.” Tony laughs kissing Sam’s cheek, “you just should have told him they were in Iceland.”

Shrugging Sam smiles, “I didn’t want to ruin his dreams.” They both fall into ridiculous laughter as Peter falls into sweet, sweet dreams. 

Tony organises Peter’s birthday present the next day, 3 tickets to Australia.

The first drink he’d ordered upon landing on the island was, in fact, a sex on the beach, just for the novelty of it all. Peach schnapps had never been his favorite—a fact which had thoroughly confused everyone from the time he’d started to drink—but it was the principle of the thing.

He’s drinking a piña colada now, much more to his taste, and enjoying the feeling of the sun on his skin and the sand between his toes, trying his best to not feel annoyed at how much reading Bucky saw fit to do on this vacation.

Apparently, he’d really thought she’d meant a drink.

“I am not going on a blind date.” 

Sam thought that letting his sisters set up a Tinder account for him would get them off his back about dating, he was the youngest of the four and ever since moving to college, the girls seemed to be treading intrusively into his love life.  College is meant to be a time for exciting new opportunities, meeting people, taking exciting classes, and even testing some relationships. That did not mean Sam needed his sisters involved. 

Natasha sat next to him on the couch scrolling through his phone, swiping left and right. She sighs, “It’s not that we want to interfere,” Sam rolls his eyes, “I don’t believe that,” she smiles in the way that Sam knows she doesn’t mean it from years of practice. Refiguring herself to face his phone towards him, she restates, “But do you really want to be dating somebody who is holding a fish in their profile?” The guy on the screen is in fact holding a fish in his profile and as a proud fisher, Sam doesn’t hate that.

Instead, he steals his phone back from Natasha and sighs, “Why aren’t you bothering Darcy with getting a partner, she’s single and yet you don’t seem interested in her love life.” Sam points out looking over to the youngest of the three sisters, only a year older than he is and nowhere near as mature.  

Darcy smiles young upside down on the back of the couch, “Because they realise I am long gone and you are still young and not drowning with work.” Sam forgot how much he rolled his eyes when all four of them were in the same room. 

It was nice being together again though. 

“Fine,” Sam sighs and puts his phone back on the coffee table for any of his sister's choosing, “But I don’t want this date to happen until after Christmas break. Understood?”

Jane gets a large smile on her face as she and Natasha fight for the phone squealing, “You are going to love the guy I set you up with! He’s smart and gorgeous and-” Natasha shoves her moving onto the adjoining couch where they both can go through his phone. 

Darcy moves her position so she can be with her other two sisters and laugh at their brother's misery, “I actually think my guy is the one for him,” she says shrugging already getting ahead of herself. 

Natasha shakes her head, “Bucky has a good friend who is like perfect for Sam, he even asked me about it at a party ages ago,” Nastahsa mentions off handly not showing her cards. 

This is when it dawns on Sam what is actually happening, “your all setting me up on individual blind dates?” he asks hoping, desperately that it isn’t true. But the way the three girls turn to him like it’s obvious makes Sam cry inside. Darcy laughs patting Sam on the back as she leaves the room, “Well obviously.” 

Sam is going on three blind dates when he didn't even want to go on one. Great. 

The first date is set up by Jane, the guy is apparently a mechanic who works in the same lab as she and Bruce do. Bruce talks him up well and Sam likes Brcue so he has high expectations. Apparently, he and Sam are the same age but the guy is like a genius and so he skipped a few high school years and ended up at college 2 years early, now in his 4th year while Sam is only in his 2nd. That doesn’t give Sam the most confidence because unlike his sister's science has never been his best subject. Jane does work around astrophysicists, Darcy had always been good at science and decided to major in poli-sci and Natasha is a literal private investigator, the oldest of them all and the coolest job after only being in the field for 3 years. 

Sam is at college on a football scholarship and majoring in psych to become a counsellor, which is no easy feat, but nothing like what his sisters did. 

“Hi,” Sam introduces coming up to the hostess desk of a fairly fancy restaurant which Sam isn’t quite sure he can afford, “this is going to sound crazy but I am here on a blind date, the reservation might be under Sam or Jane?” 

Smiling the hostess nods and shows Sam to his table informing him that his date had called earlier saying he would be late, “he was very apologetic and seemed excited for tonight,” she reassures but it doesn’t make Sam feel any better about this date. He didn’t want to come in the first place and now his date was going to be late. 

His date was especially late now. Sam had been sitting there for an hour drafting an angry message directed at Jane for setting up a date at a place where he can’t afford the food and the date doesn’t show up. The wait staff kept filling up his water jug and offering lemons as a side as a sorry for the wait, asking if he would like to order by himself, which Sam didn’t. 

Just when Sam thinks he is at his wit's ends, ready to leave and forget about this whole situation a guy stumbles through the glass, leather jacket, sunglasses on and not at all prepared for the fancy establishment, which makes Sam feel a little better about his situation. “Umm I am here on a blind date, if my date even wanted to wait for me that is because I am seriously late and-” It seemed the guy would have just kept going if the hostess didn’t stop him, “Right this way Mr Stark.” And the guy, Sam’s date, shut up quickly and followed. 

When they get to the table and the rest of the restaurant isn’t looking at them anymore, Mr Stark takes Sam’s hands apologising profusely, “I would have been here sooner but I was waiting on lab results which were meant to be finished in 15 minutes and then I got a call from Obie who just wanted to ruin my night so the results were all mixed up and I promise I will pay for dinner and I-” Sam stops him by putting his hands on top of Stark’s.

“I’m Sam what’s your name?” Sam introduces and Mr Stark laughs, at himself not at Sam and it makes the two of them feel much more comfortable.  

Mystery guy smiles, “My name is Tony, and I am sorry if you couldn’t tell, feel free to leave.” 

Sam likes this guy, he doesn’t know why but he does and so he offers a different solution, “this place is way out of my price point and honestly I don’t think I could pronounce half of the things on this menu.” He admits and it makes Tony smile.

“I know just the place.”

So Sam takes Tony’s hand and allows himself to be led out of the restaurant to somewhere else, somewhere he can pronounce the names on the menu. They end up at a Burger place and that is much nicer. Not nicer in comparison to the interior or the fancy food Sam is sure the other place served but this is run by a family who knew Tony as soon as he walked through the door. It just feels like a better place, much more comforting and Sam admits that is one of the factors that made him fall on that very first date. 

The two keep in touch, texting from across campus, it makes Natasha pout when he tells her.

She frowns reminding Sam that, “You agreed to three blind dates, at least give my guy a try, yours hasn’t even asked for a second date.” Sam can’t admit that his sister is wrong and so he agrees to go on a second blind date, and when Darcy hears he knows he will be going on a third, but that’s what brothers do. 

Anywhere it is only messages between Sam and Tony, neither has had the guts to ask each other out again and so maybe Natasha is right. She is the one in a long-term relationship after all. 

The place Natasha sets them up is much more in Sam’s region of date material, an outback steakhouse which makes Sam much more comfortable. He’s not wearing ridiculously stuffy clothes and he doesn't feel bad about ordering a starter for his date and him to share because this time he knows the menu. There is no sympathy from the staff, or the constant asking about his date. 

Because Sam’s luck isn’t so great when it comes to blind dates because once again the guy is late. 

Nearly finishing his entre of fries he ordered he hears an eerily familiar voice. With another ridiculous excuse fro being late which is similar to his last date. 

“This sounds crazy, but I am late to a blind date and am hoping that the guy I was meant to meet hasn’t left yet,” the hostess rolls her eyes at the guy (Sam can’t see it but can feel it from her posture) and point the guy in the direction of Sam’s table.

Which is when he sees him all over again. Tony Stark is his blind date, again. 

BONUS

Darcy also sets up Sam with Tony but doesn’t get the chance to call it a blind date because Sam drags Tony to a family dinner on college family weekend because the Starks don’t come and Sam’s parents are bugging him about the guy he is seeing. So instead Darcy fets to set them up on a mystery date with clues and everything, it is adorable. They all live happily ever after, Sam and Tony move in their senior year of college, Tony goes and watches Sam’s football games, Sam stays up late with Tony tracking lab data, and they are seriously cute together. Cute enough that Darcy and Nat are disgusted by themselves (and fighting over who really set them up and should get to toast at their wedding).

It's SamBucky AU Week, and I'm writing fics from the prompts @sambuckyauweek has wonderfully provided! For Day One, I chose Canon Divergence! These two fics will also count as my "Sorcerer Supreme" and "Time Travel" squares for the Sam Wilson Bingo Round 2 card that @samwilsonbingo gave me. Here's my two part fic about a Sorcerer Supreme Sam saving Bucky from his fall into the Danube River and Bucky finding Sam in the future! Enjoy! 🥰

1) If You Fall, I Will Catch You
