The Journey That Matters: What It Was Like, Directed and Produced by Arwen Curry, Featuring Ursula K. Le Guin [reading her essay 'What is Was Like' (2004), in Words Are My Matter. Writings About Life and Books, 2000-2016, Small Beer Press, 2016], 2023 [Literary Hub]
Cinematographer: Jeff Streich Editors: Maya Curry, Sarah Cannon Composer: Will Fritch Location Sound: Anna Rieke Motion Graphics: Alexandra Petrus, Kia Simon
Archival footage and stills: The Ursula K. Le Guin Foundation; Schlesinger Library, Harvard Radcliffe Institute
What It Was Like A talk given at a meeting of Oregon NARAL in January 2004 «My friends at NARAL asked me to tell you what it was like before Roe vs. Wade. They asked me to tell you what it was like to be twenty and pregnant in 1950 and when you tell your boyfriend you're pregnant, he tells you about a friend of his in the army whose girl told him she was pregnant, so he got all his buddies to come and say, "We all fucked her, so who knows who the father is?" And he laughs at the good joke. They asked me to tell you what it was like to be a pregnant girl—we weren't "women" then—a pregnant college girl who, if her college found out she was pregnant, would expel her, there and then, without plea or recourse. What it was like, if you were planning to go to graduate school and get a degree and earn a living so you could support yourself and do the work you loved—what it was like to be a senior at Radcliffe and pregnant and if you bore this child, this child which the law demanded you bear and would then call "unlawful," "illegitimate," this child whose father denied it, this child which would take from you your capacity to support yourself and do the work you knew it was your gift and your responsibility to do: What was it like? I can hardly imagine what it's like to live as a woman under Fundamentalist Islamic law. I can hardly remember now, fifty-four years later, what it was like to live under Fundamentalist Christian law. Thanks to Roe vs. Wade, none of us in America has lived in that place for half a lifetime. But I can tell you what it is like, for me, right now. It's like this: If I had dropped out of college, thrown away my education, depended on my parents through the pregnancy, birth, and infancy, till I could get some kind of work and gain some kind of independence for myself and the child, if I had done all that, which is what the anti-abortion people want me to have done, I would have borne a child for them, for the anti-abortion people, the authorities, the theorists, the fundamentalists; I would have borne a child for them, their child. But I would not have borne my own first child, or second child, or third child. My children. The life of that fetus would have prevented, would have aborted, three other fetuses, or children, or lives, or whatever you choose to call them: my children, the three I bore, the three wanted children, the three I had with my husband—whom, if I had not aborted the unwanted one, I would never have met and married, because he would have been a Fulbright student going to France on the Queen Mary in 1953 but I would not have been a Fulbright student going to France on the Queen Mary in 1953. I would have been an "unwed mother" of a three-year-old in California, without work, with half an education, living off her parents, not marriageable, contributing nothing to her community but another mouth to feed, another useless woman. But it is the children I have to come back to, my children Elisabeth, Caroline, Theodore, my joy, my pride, my loves. If I had not broken the law and aborted that life nobody wanted, they would have been aborted by a cruel, bigoted, and senseless law. They would never have been born. This thought I cannot bear. I beg you to see what it is that we must save, and not to let the bigots and misogynists take it away from us again. Save what we won: our children. You who are young, before it's too late, save your children.» – Ursula K. Le Guin, Words Are My Matter. Writings About Life and Books, 2000-2016, Small Beer Press, Easthampton, MA, 2016

Sarah Kazansky and her place in the Fanworks vs Source Material
Some background:
I only just got into the Top Gun fandom, only having watched the original movie a month ago so that I could be prepared to watch Top Gun: Maverick. Top Gun (1986) is entertaining but not something I’m particularly attached to. The two most compelling parts are Gooses death and the handshake/hug at the end. Overall I walked away, having been entertained but not overtly attached.
TGM is another story. It’s extremely well done, emotionally deep, and really cool. (Is it also blatant military propaganda? yes, but that doesn’t stop it from having a compelling story) Probably the best scene is between Maverick and Iceman. Unlike so many sequels where rivals/enemies become friends at the end of the original and then clearly aren’t, this scene demonstrates a deep love and respect between the two characters without destroying the banter filled rivalry that makes the relationship interesting. Now part of this might be the fact that this sequel takes place over 30 years later, and I’m sure Ice and Mav butted heads over the years, but it shows that ultimately they both stuck by their words to be each others wingman.
Okay Now to the point:
Sarah pretty much has a singular purpose in the movie, and that’s to make Iceman straight…(or at least in a m/f relationship). However it’s done in such a way that she doesn’t actually accomplish that purpose. We see her twice and she never interacts with Ice on screen: first when she greats Maverick and he reads Ice’s terminal diagnosis in her expression. It’s obvious she and Mav have a rapport and friendship. The second is at the funeral where she is presented with Ice’s flag. These two scenes along with the wedding band on Ice’s hand all are meant to imply that Sarah and Tom Kazansky are married. And I’m certain you’ll be able to find sources that explicitly state that but the movie isn’t one of them.
Because of this lack of confirmation fandom has done an interesting thing. Many with a queer reading of Ice have decided not to ignore Sarah but instead embraced the non explicit nature of her and Ice’s relationship and say that she’s his sister. And the fact of the matter is that she very well could be. A sister can just as easily be staying with her terminally ill brother. A sister can just as easily be his next of kin and take his flag. So many young soldiers flags are taken by their mothers or sisters.
Now having an explicitly cannon m/f relationship has never stopped fandom from deciding that a character is queer and writing them thusly. But I just find it interesting how Sarah treated.
Her being Tom’s sister isn’t the universal decision of the queer side of the fandom. I’ve seen fics set earlier in the timeline (specifically set prior to the DADT repeal) have her be a lesbian also in the armed forces marrying a gay Tom to protect both of them. There are also some where she’s unknowingly Tom’s beard.(but those leave a bad taste in my mouth realistic as it may be). I’ve even seen AroAce Sarah marrying Tom for taxes, children, and to protect him.
It’s nice that in general this fandom has refused to dismiss the new women who joined the story in TGM even while still maintaining the iron clad belief that Top Gun is about gay pilots. Many Fanfiction authors have given more consideration to Sarah than the actual movie. (Now it does suck when women are only in a movie to tell you something about a man. that’s a problem)

Sarah Phillips is the 2nd strongest MC in Liberty's Kids, or she should be at least
after almost spilling this whole headcannon to my bff who def was just humoring me, i'm telling the whole class.
By strongest I mean strongest physically. and I say second strongest bc there was no way she's outlifting Moses, who has lifted multiple people with ease in cannon. Sarah could lift Henri easily, but that's like picking up a large sack of potatoes(that boy is basically a mischievous french tree branch).
Anyway back to Sarah, bc that's what's important here. While it was debatable if she was stronger than James before Sarah left for Ohio, she wasn't the one slightly winded after doing chores for the Adams. It's just another part of their banter at this point. Who's the brain, who's the brawn, etc. etc.(Henri is the something else). they really need to find better flirting mechanisms. But post-Ohio she's absolutely won that battle, no questions asked.
I just love the idea of seeing Sarah, a proper young English lady politely turning down the offers to help her with some heavy luggage to easily hoist it up and briskly walk off to wherever she was headed. Or that she accepts and hands it over to the other person and they nearly drop it bc they didn't think it'd be that heavy.
And it's not uncommon in the continental camps to see a redheaded young lady carrying cannonballs across the grounds with the other soldiers like the thing hardly weighs more than a lunch basket. Washington has explicitly told his colonels to not question/worry about it.
I know it's not the most refined hc, but its been wafting in my brain(and drafts) for so long, I knew I needed to get it out of there.

Movie Review |'Bloodthirst' 2023: Not-Your-Sverage Blood-Sucker Feature
Following their tropical terror feature Bermuda Island (read our review here) released earlier this year, Mahal Empire now sinks its teeth into post-apocalyptic horror with Bloodthirst. Set in a world with a collapsed society ruled by warring vampire factions, this production team combines multiple genres while adding a touch of the wild wild west. Opening with quick narration to set the scene,…

Having an emotional day, so decided the only proper thing is to rewatch episodes of doctor who, because, I know these episodes will fill me with feelings
I forgot how hard S4 EP13 hits.
Tenrose fans fucking won with this episode. LIKE CMON, we got SO MUCH, so much happiness, AND PAIN
If nobody has me, i know S4 EP13 of New Doctor Who got me (in emotional turmoil)
If Tenrose has 1 fan, its me. If Tenrose has 0 fans, I am not only dead but someone chopped up my brain because there is no way my dead body is not still a tenrose fan
Donna fans (also me) won desperately and then suddenly lost. It hurt just as much as the first time watching.

Sarah’s rebellion and Kyles pain
This is possibly my favorite deleted scene because there is SO much packed into it for both of them? It’s everything. These huge character moments that really explain the core of each of them as well as fixing a few plot holes.
A few things to get out of the way
Sarah is constantly calling her mother and is the one who suggested she goes to the cabin in the first place to keep her safe
Sarah is fairly confident in her skills and is a good hitchhike
“There is no fate than what we make for ourselves”
It explains them hopping out of the truck at the motel
Tumblr media
The scene starts when Sarah finds Cyberdyne systems in the phone book and has the plan to blow it up. Prevent the war and stop it all before it ever happens. It was interesting to me to see that she’s always held this idea. (Only she held back until John was older to make a attack again.). Kyle is against the idea under the principle of keeping her safe and it not being his mission. Naturally Sarah loses it.
“ Listen. Understand. I am not a military objective I am a person! And you don’t own me!”
She’s always had this fire, this attitude in her. Always spoke her mind (again I will fight anyone who makes the weak woman argument for this movie). Sarah breaks from Kyle and runs off causing a fight in the woods…
She gets a solid punch, Kyle flips and points the gun. She snaps at him and admits she scarred. Disarmed- Kyle breaks.
United in fear
Tumblr media
“ I don’t want to spend my whole life waiting for that thing to catch up to me. Always looking over my shoulder, wondering if I’ll leave some tiny clue behind!”
This new world that Sarah finds herself tossed into everyday is one Kyles been living his entire life. The fear, the worry, the doubt. It’s fresh for her now but she’s basically laying out all the emotions on a platter and it’s his responce that really fucking gets to me.
“I don’t belong here. I wasn’t meant to see this. It’s like a dream. This… And this *he picks a flower and begins to cry* … and you…so beautiful. It hurts Sarah. It hurts so bad. You can’t understand… it’s gone. It’s all gone! All of it! It’s gone!”
This moment of complete vulnerability. This man who has been so plane faced until now breaking down a encore sobbing in the grass over everything that he never thought he’d get to see. Over everything he shouldn’t be seeing… it feels wrong just by him being there. He’s lucky to be on this mission that he’s most certainly going to die carrying out - just to see this. To see her.
My heart-
Sarah equally tearful, convinces him to join her in the idea of blowing skynet to hell… and she says the line. “There’s no fate then what we make for ourselves, right?” (The fact this was meant to be in the first movie and implies he told her so at some point is- ahh)
“Cmon Kiddo”
“…okay.”
Just- I love them. I adore them. Everything about them is - my heart I can’t take it. They’ve both got so so much in them and - just the fact that Kyle feels practically unworthy to even be around her and she’s lost of this man who’s been through so much pain is 💕 I love them.

Sarah: god I hate being 16
Adam: 16?! Wait until you get to 17. It gets so much worse

Thatcher: 28?! Yeah, wait until you’re 35 and all of a sudden you’re like a fossil to all these caterpillars.
Ruth: 35?! Wait until you’re 41, my joints are basically decaying at this point.
Thatcher: yeah shut up ruth that’s because you’re dea- wAIT
Sarah: what the fuck you guys. can a girl just complain without the ghost of a middle-aged woman joining in on the conversation????
