Funny how, after all that had happened to them, they had still been able, well able, to do ordinary things, enjoy ordinary things.

Sebastian Barry || Old God’s Time
Old God’s Time is definitely not an easy novel. Barry kind of leans towards stream of consciousness, having his main character jump from thought to thought, from subject to subject. At first I did not really go for the novel and then all of a sudden, halfway through, it grabbed me and I could no longer stop reading. I had to know what was going to happen to main character Tom Kettle. The story…

Thomas McNulty, aged barely seventeen and having fled the Great Famine in Ireland, signs up for the U.S. Army in the 1850s. With his brother in arms, John Cole, Thomas goes on to fight in the Indian Wars—against the Sioux and the Yurok—and, ultimately, the Civil War. Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, the men find these days to be vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in.
Moving from the plains of Wyoming to Tennessee, Sebastian Barry’s latest work is a masterpiece of atmosphere and language. An intensely poignant story of two men and the makeshift family they create with a young Sioux girl, Winona, Days Without End is a fresh and haunting portrait of the most fateful years in American history and is a novel never to be forgotten.

Old God’s Time
Booker Books – there was a time when I followed the Booker Prize nominations religiously, and always read a few on the list. These past few years of death and disease have thrown me off my rhythm, but Sebastian Barry’s Old God’s Time, longlisted for the Booker, came up on my library loans and I decided it was time to read a good book. A visit from two young detectives seeking retired Irish…

Someday she’d take silk. Oh yes. She’d don the white wig.
Watch out.
She was going to clean out the constitution
of all its woman-hating nonsense.
The special place of women in the home.
That got her goat.
With lawyerly Vim
she would scour it all out.
Mount challenge to it.
In honor of her mother and all the mothers.
Fuck housework.
Down with dishcloths.
Let’s have raging, ragged, ruinous, riotous, ravening, rabid women.
Real women.
None of these man-made fucking women.
That’s what she used to say.
No doubt would still say it, wherever she was.

[Giorni senza fine][Sebastian Barry]
