Went to a counter-protest yesterday in support of trans rights and queer kids, and it was the most intense moment of activism I have ever experienced. The anti-trans protestors were mean, rude, bumping into us, stirring shit, knocking umbrellas out of people’s hands. We outnumbered them, but not by much- depends on if you count kids or not. Also they didn’t scruple to use said kids as shields and/or weapons, so that was pretty shitty. There was a rumour that a kid actually got taken away by the cops o.0

The optics were weird. Apparently the movement was started by a Muslim woman, so while the anti-queer sentiment attracted some “trucker convoy”-type white dudes (and they were only too happy to instigate and escalate), it looked very much like a bunch of white queers yelling down a bunch of brown families- super uncomfortable. Weird day, very stressful, definitely felt unsafe at multiple points in the day… and as someone with a whole lot of privilege, I’m so glad I went.

PS My arms actually hurt from holding up my sign.

Happy end of 2023! This has been a great year for me despite all the things happening in the world. I graduated with my bachelor's and got into my first choice master's program and I am having a swell time there right now. Got my first job -job, finished a thesis, spent more time with my family. I started writing fanfic - will be linking it on this blog- and finished NaNoWriMo, all while getting mostly 7 hours of sleep a night. It had been a good year for art too, even though I've had less time on it this year due to everything else that is going on.

Here is to 2024 continuing to be great!

Sept 18 - did more hours of scanning. Interesting to see glimpses of my sister and BILs life outside of the times I was present. And spot the odd photo from events I was there for.

Made chayote wraps for supper using the leftovers from the roasted chicken legs last week. I did the filling while the nephew took a turn at scanning, then he filled and baked the wraps.

Sept 19 - did some shopping and a grocery run. Dozed off in late afternoon/early evening and nephew didn't take over making the planned supper, so we had a fend night. I hunted down a cherry turnover, some fresh mini tomatoes, strawberries, and a yogurt cup.

Sept 20 - back to scanning! And crocheting between scans. I can work 1-2 triple stitches per scan, so I'm making slow but measurable progress on the scarf. Nephew made shepherds pie for supper.

In 2022, the US market cap of the weight loss industry was $75 billion [1, 3]. In 2021, the global market cap of the weight loss industry was estimated at $224.27 billion [2]. 

In 2020, the market shrunk by about 25%, but rebounded and then some since then [1, 3] By 2030, the global weight loss industry is expected to be valued at $405.4 billion [2]. If diets really worked, this industry would fall overnight.

Doctors became so desperate that they resorted to amputating parts of the digestive tract (bariatric surgery) in the hopes that it might finally result in long-term weight-loss.
