“You said that you were going to be able to pick her up from school today… What? What do you mean you’re in the airport?! Where the h- … You can’t just promise her something and then not follow through with it. She’s been looking forward to seeing you all week. Yeah… Yeah okay… Bye.” With an exasperated sigh he hung up his phone, finally looking in your direction as he came up to the classroom door that you were standing outside of. You had heard the entire conversation, something that he was well aware of judging by the sheepish look on his face as he looked at you, but it wasn’t something that you would pry him about. “Sorry about that… And I’m sorry that I have to bring her in so early, I’m just so busy and-” You held up your hand, shaking your head as you looked down at his daughter. You knew who he was and you knew what he did, everyone knew what he did, and that’s one of the main reasons he had to bring his daughter to the classroom early.
“If you need me to keep her after class a little longer that’s fine. We can watch movies and I have a whole cabinet full of snacks and games that we can play too.” You said, hoping to ease his visibly worried mind, and as if your words were a ray of sunshine for him, his all too familiar smile that you had seen all over television screens and on YouTube had spread across his face again. He let out a sigh of relief, placing his daughter’s hand in your own before kneeling down in front of her and pressing a quick kiss against her forehead.
“Be good for Ms. Y/N. Me or one of your uncles will be here to pick you up as soon as we can.” He murmured to her, his tone completely different from the annoyance that had filled it while he was speaking on the phone. “Thank you so much…” He said as he stood back up, his eyes meeting yours for only a second before you both looked away from each other, your eyes averting to anywhere but the others. “I’ll try to be back as soon as I’m finished working. I’m really sorry if this is an inconvenience for you and, please, just let me know if it is. I can try to find a babysitter it’s just really hard and-”
You tsked your tongue, shaking your head once more at his worried ramblings. “It’s quite alright, really. Chohee is wonderful, and… well, I don’t really have anyone to go back home too after work so, I don’t mind at all. Don’t have the guys or yourself rushing over here to pick her up either, I’d rather you or them get here safely than to hear that something awful has happened on your way over. Plus, if she gets hungry, I’m sure I can order something and have it delivered to the classroom, as long as it’s okay with you.”
He nodded quickly, and you could almost see the weight that your words had lifted off his shoulders, his eyes closing as he took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “You’re truly a lifesaver. Thank you so much. I’ll call the school and let them know when myself or one of the guys are on their way. Thank you again, so much.” He smiled at you before quickly lowering his eyes to his daughter who was still looking up at him with what looked like stars in her eyes. “Remember, be a good girl. Next time I’m off I promise you and I will do something super fun together, whatever you’d like. I love you, Chohee, I’ll see you after school.” He kissed the tips of his fingers and pressed them to the top of her head before nodding to you once more and turning to walk away. He was a good father, he was trying his best to make the best out of everything, he was doing his best to give his daughter the best, but you could see how hard it was on him and it made your heart ache to see him so stressed out.

“What do you mean Hajoon isn’t getting her? She promised that she’d pick Chohee up from school and have her this weekend…” Jeonghan said from across the table, his head tilted in confusion at Seungcheol as he tried to make sense of what had just been told to him. They were going to be shooting a new music video this weekend, it had been set up that way for weeks because Seungcheol had specifically asked weeks in advance to make sure Chohees mother would pick her up and keep her for the weekend. “So now what?”
Seungcheol shook his head, his fingers drumming on the table as he let out a loud sigh. “I don’t know. I don’t even know how I’m going to pick her up from school today. I’m so busy and I’m trying my best to be a good father to Chohee all while being a good leader for the group and it’s just getting more and more difficult.” His arms folded on the table in front of him and he quickly dropped his head down onto them, grunting quietly, unable to fully contain his frsutrations. “I don’t know what I’d do if her teacher didn’t offer to stay after with her every time I needed it.”
Jeonghan narrowed his eyes, more interested than confused now at the sudden mention of Chohees teacher that he had never gotten to meet yet. He hadn’t even heard about you before, and everytime Seungcheol stayed later at work, he had just assumed that his mother had picked up Chohee. “Wait… She’s being watched by her teacher? Isn’t she in preschool? She’s only four… Do you really trust her teacher to look after her that way? Wouldn’t you want your mom to get her instead?” Of course Jeonghan was worried about Chohee, she was basically his niece and he loved her as such. He was there when she was first born, waiting outside of the delivery room to finally meet her and congratulate his best friend on the birth of his first daughter. Since that day, he’s been there for everything, including the trainwreck of a breakup that left Chohee with Seungcheol who was trying to keep himself together while keeping everything else in his life together at the same time. It was the lowest any of the members had ever seen him and none of them wanted to see him that low ever again.
“At this point, I trust Chohees teacher more than her own mother.” Seungcheol stated matter of factly, pushing himself away from the table and standing up. “I can’t just keep handing her off to my mother every time Hajoon changes her mind about being a mother.” He pinched the bridge of his nose in agitation, the smile that is usually worn on his face was completely gone, not a trace of it seen in his features at this point. “I’m sorry, I just need to figure out what I’m going to do this weekend with her… Maybe I can get my mom to help watch her on Saturday and then I’ll get her Sunday…” He trailed off, shaking his head as he turned to walk out of the lunch room, offering a small wave to Jeonghan who was still sitting at the table.
It’s not even that he was just worried about the weekends, he was worried about the summer and what he’d do when he couldn’t take Chohee to school anymore. Thinking that way had him feeling even worse though, like he was the world's worst father because he depended on his daughter's teacher to watch her just so he could go to work. It’s like he had to make a choice between being an idol or being a father and it wasn’t a choice that he ever thought he’d have to make. This wasn’t how he thought his life would go, he didn’t even think he’d have a kid yet, and while he didn’t think of Chohee as a mistake, he knew that she had come too early in his life, and she had come to him from the wrong person, but he couldn’t just give her up.
The way that he had met Hajoon wasn’t one that he’d want to tell his daughter, not until she was much older anyway, and that should have been a sign in itself that the relationship he thought would bloom just wasn’t obtainable. He should have seen the sign, but after a slightly tipsy one night stand and an exchange of numbers and then two months without a single text from her, he had gotten one. He didn’t believe her at first, he didn’t want to believe her because he still had his entire career, his entire life in front of him, but she insisted and he believed her. Throughout the entire pregnancy it seemed like things were going perfectly, he really felt like everything would be fine. Hajoon seemed to have settled down, and for the next six months of the pregnancy, it was like all of his worries flew out the window. He never would have thought that once Chohee was born that Hajoon would walk out like it was nothing, like she wasn’t leaving anything behind. His heart had been torn to pieces and he felt completely helpless, holding his only 2 month old daughter in his arms as he watched the woman that he thought he would make his wife walk out the door.
All sense of trust walked out the door with her, as if she packed it up in the bags she rolled behind her and now he couldn’t see himself with anyone else. How could he possibly trust anyone after what had happened to him? It was the longest con, and for what? He was left with a child who had won his heart the second he saw her, but he knew that his job would keep him from being the father that she deserved to have. Was it fair to keep her with him even if that was the case? He wasn’t sure, but all he did know was that he was trying his best, he was doing everything to give his daughter the best and to love her as much as he could when he was around, it was the only thing he felt like he could do. Never in his wildest dreams did he ever think he’d be a single father, yet here he was.
Even still, no matter how hard things got for him, there was nothing in the world that he’d trade his life for. He knew that one day he’d become a master at balancing his home life and his work life, it was a matter of time, and at some point he’d get it right. He truly loved his daughter, and when things would get hard or when he felt like everything was falling apart around him, all he had to do was look at her and see her smile and it helped him calm down, it made him see that things weren’t so bad, she was the light that he needed.
As he climbed into his car he let out a small sigh of relief knowing that he’d soon see his daughter, and while he was unsure of what he was going to do this weekend to make sure that she’d be watched and cared for, he knew that he’d be able to figure it out once he calmed down. He tried really hard not to let the stress of everything get to him which was easier said than done, but he found that it was easier to stay calm and let himself think when he had Chohee with him. He didn’t want her to see him upset or stressed, he didn’t want her to think that it was her fault that he was feeling that way.
He finally pulled his phone out of his jacket pocket, turning it on for the first time since he’s been at the office. One notification popped up on his screen that caught his eye, his heart freezing momentarily only to start racing once more as his fingers fumbled to type in his passcode. It wasn’t often that you called him, it was so rare that right now seemed like the first time you had which only had him panicking more as he dialed the number back and shoved his key into the ignition. His entire body was shaking as he put his car into drive, the ringing sound still coming through his phone which was on speaker in the center console, the silence that followed each ring only had his stomach sinking deeper as he raced towards the school.
“Hi, Seungcheol. This is Y/N, I was just…” You couldn’t finish your sentence, the sound of your voice coming through his phone had him immediately cutting you off, his mouth spilling out a slew of questions faster than you could even answer them, his main question being if Chohee was alright, if anything had happened to her. All he wanted to know was that his baby was okay, and then the sound of your giggling filled the silence of his car and he didn’t know whether to relax or be annoyed that you apparently thought his worrying was funny. “There’s no need for you to worry, Chohee is alright. We’re watching Finding Nemo. I called earlier to ask if it was okay if we had a little popcorn while we watched it, but she insisted that it was okay, so we had it anyway. It’s been an hour since then, so… I’m sorry for worrying you in any way. I just wanted to be sure…”
Popcorn. You had called him to ask if popcorn was okay, and now he was the one laughing, albeit sheepishly, at how worked up he had gotten. He had every right to worry about his daughter when she wasn’t with him, but he also had the tendency to overreact a little bit, something that he was highly aware of and something that he immediately felt bad about once he knew that everything was alright. “No, no, I’m sorry for coming at you like that… I just got a little panicky.” He let out an awkward chuckle, running his hand through his hair as he continued driving, feeling himself relax more and more the closer he got to his daughter. “Has she been good though? I know I’m pretty late picking her up, I’m sorry. I hope that she hasn’t given you any problems.” Usually Chohee would get fussy if he didn’t pick her up on time or if she was left with anyone a little longer than she was used to, it was one of the reasons he couldn’t leave her with his own mother longer than a weekend.
“Problems? Not at all. Chohee has been an absolute sweetheart, I really don’t mind having her stay after.” You said, and he could hear the sound of quiet crunching as you popped another piece of popcorn into your mouth. “She’s actually taking a small nap right now because the movie ended, I hope that isn’t going to affect her going to sleep tonight.” Shocked was the only way he would be able to describe the way he felt right now. Chohee rarely allowed herself to fall asleep at nap time unless she was at home in her own bed, and he was the one that had to get everything set up and just right so that she’d actually fall asleep. His mother would always call him, asking him how he managed to get Chohee to sleep, as if it were impossible to do, yet here you were accomplishing it as if it were no big deal. “I’m really going to miss having her around once summer break comes around.” You said, but your words had Seungcheol thinking way too hard, the gears of his mind whirring as it filled with questions of what he’d actually do once summer came.
“Summer break…” He murmured, unsure of it his phone even picked up his voice for you to hear, but he didn’t know what else to say. The two words were looming over his head like a dark cloud. Of course he’d try to do as much as he could with Chohee while she was on break, but it would be even harder for him to do his job when he always had her, and he really didn’t want to place the responsibility on his own mother either. “So uhm… Are you tutoring or anything this summer? Are you doing any extracurricular classes?” A part of him was interested, but the other part of him, the part that felt awful for even questioning what you were doing during the summer, that part of him wanted to know if there was any way for you to watch Chohee during the summer as well.
You hummed softly before responding, giving him a soft no that sent his hopes barreling into a downward spiral. “I don’t really have anything to do during the break. I actually need to find a part time job to fill the gap that’ll be there… and so I can pay my bills…” You paused momentarily before clearing your throat with a few quick coughs. “But if you need some recommendations for some tutors or some extra fun little classes that I think she’d love, I’m sure I can send you some of the information to sign up for one of them.” He hated the idea of it, putting Chohee into the care of someone that he doesn’t know at all. There was something about you, hearing you talk, having an actual conversation with you and hearing the way you spoke about his daughter that made him certain that his daughter was safe with you. He couldn’t just hand her off to another teacher and expect them to be as good with her as you are. It wouldn’t be that easy, he knew it wouldn’t, not only because of his own feelings towards the matter, but also because he knew the way that Chohee was.
“Yeah… Yeah I’ll think about it.” He murmured, nodding his head slowly as he stared out the windshield of his car. There was nothing to think about though, he had already thought enough about it. He wasn’t just going to put Chohee in some random class for the summer or make her join some extra activity that she’d most likely get bored of within the first couple days anyway. Like Jeonghan had said earlier, she’s only four, and being that young meant that her attention span wasn’t going to allow her to stay focused on something much longer than a week tops before it didn’t catch and hold her attention anymore. “I’m almost to the school by the way, I’ll be there soon.” He said quickly, trying to fill the silence that had taken over the car when you hadn’t said anything. He didn’t even wait for your response before his finger came down on the little red button to end the call. He wasn’t quite sure what exactly he was going to do, all he did know was that he needed to figure something out before the summer, and there was one thing, one option in particular that was stuck in the forefront of his brain, he just needed to make sure it was doable, then it would become his one and only choice.

The parking lot to the school was practically empty aside from one car, one car that he could only assume was your own since you were the only one in the building. Seungcheol parked quickly next to it, rushing out of the vehicle and running down the sidewalk to get to the little side door that led into the classroom that he had dropped his daughter off earlier that morning. He didn’t notice at first, but the closer he got, the more he could see that the door to the classroom was already propped open, the sight of it initially causing his heart to sink as he picked up the pace. It wasn’t until he got right next to the door that he realized your head slightly peeking out of it with one of your fingers pressed against your lips. “She fell asleep watching Nemo and… Well she just looks so peaceful while she’s sleeping and I know how babies get when they’re woken up from naps and they’re not ready to face the rest of the day yet.” You giggled softly, trying to muffle the laughter in the palm of your hand as you walked back into the class alongside him. “I really hope you don’t mind that I let her sleep though, it might be kind of hard to get her to bed tonight…” You murmured sheepishly, standing next to your desk and fumbling through the papers that were strewn about it.
He watched you intently, and while most of the time he’d look at you as nothing more than Chohees teacher, it seemed like he was seeing you in a new light with a new set of eyes. There was a glow about you that he couldn’t quite place his finger on. Maybe it was the way the corner of your mouth twitched up into a small smile as you looked over the drawings that the other kids in the Pre-K class had made, drawings that he couldn’t quite make sense of himself, but you saw in the scribbled art something that only you could see. It could have been that, it could have also been the way that you talked to him, the way you talked about his daughter, the way you treated them both as if they were humans, as if she wasn’t the daughter of a k-pop idol, as if he wasn’t a k-pop idol himself. To you, he was just Choi Seungcheol, the father of Choi Chohee. “Don’t worry about her bedtime, she knows when she needs to sleep at night.” He said, trying to match the quiet tone that you were keeping with him, not wanting his daughter to wake up just yet. “Do you uh… do you keep sleeping bags and stuff in your class for all the students?” He questioned, noticing the pretty pink floral cot that his daughter was sleeping on, a fluffy pillow tucked under her head and a plush animal snug within her arms under the blanket.
You hummed softly, shaking your head as you continued sorting out the papers. “Ah… no… I uhm, I brought it in because she usually stays a little later than the rest of the class and we watch movies… I know how uncomfortable the floor is… so I just got a little cot for her. I hope that’s alright.” Finally looking up from the papers, your eyes met his own and he didn’t know whether he was in love or in awe, maybe a bit of both, at how much you seemed to care about his daughter. “I’m sorry, I should have asked before I did that… I just wanted her to be comfortable…” You said quickly, apparently taking his silence as disapproval.
His hands moved up in the air as he shook his head, not disapproving what you had told him in the slightest, more so, he was in disbelief. You seemed to care more about his daughter than her own mother did, and you surely did more for her than her mother did, it was just something that shocked him. “Thank you. I probably say that way too much, but you really don’t know how much it helps, how much it means to me that there’s someone like you that cares about Chohee as much as you do.” There was nothing else he could say, he wanted you to know how appreciative he was of everything that you did for his daughter because it truly meant the world to him, but he also felt the need to get closer to you building up inside of him.
“Oh…” You whispered, the word coming out as more of a breath than anything else, and he could tell that his words had made you flustered. “It’s really no problem at all. She keeps me company while I’m going through papers and work and stuff, and it’s been a while since I’ve had company while watching a movie.” You let out a sheepish giggle, finally finding the paper that you were apparently looking for and handing it to him. “Here, she drew this. She wanted you to have it and she said something about hanging it on the fridge with all her other drawings… In not that many words but, I understood what she meant.” The paper was slipped between his fingers and it took a couple seconds for him to understand what was going on in the picture, but the neat writing of who was who in the picture helped him catch on rather quickly.
Three stick figures were lined along the page, one was shorter than the rest and he immediately knew that was his daughter without the help of her name and the arrow above her head. His stick figure was standing next to his daughter, the stick arms connected as if he were holding her hand in the picture and he couldn’t contain the small smile that he felt pulling at his lips when he saw it, but the smile immediately fell when he saw the other stick figure. It was on the complete other side, and he could only assume that it was a representation of Chohees mother, it even had the word mom written above it, although it wasn’t often that Chohee even saw her mother. There were two squares in the picture too, which must have been a representation of his house and her mothers house and the longer he looked at the picture, the more it felt like his heart was breaking. “Thank you…” He whispered, and before he could continue, both his and your eyes shot up at the sound of Chohee stirring in the little sleeping bag.
“Daddy!” She cheered as her eyes blinked away the sleep and finally focused in on him, her tiny legs scrambling to kick away the sleeping bag blanket and push herself up to run over to him. His arms immediately outstretched to catch her in them, swooping her up and holding her against his chest as her own arms wrapped around his neck.
Out of the corner of his eye he could see you smiling softly at him, your head bowed towards your desk trying to make it seem like you weren’t watching, but he knew you were. “Let’s get going. I’m sure Ms. Y/N wants to get home and get some sleep too. Tell her goodbye, and you’ll see her in two more days.” He said, gently setting Chohee back down on her feet, taking a step back to let his daughter go. He wasn’t expecting her to run over to you, her little arms wrapping around your legs and clinging onto you as a small pout formed on her lips.
“You come home too…” She said, trying to hold back the whine in her voice. “I love you…” It was shocking to say the least, hearing his daughter say those words to anyone other than him and his own family, and it seemed like even you were shocked to hear them. Your eyes darted between him and Chohee as you tried to think of what to say. “Please…” Your lips parted slightly only to shut again, unable to think of what to say in response, your eyes meeting Seungcheols as if questioning him on what you should say.
“Cho… Honey… Ms. Y/N has to go home… to her own home and eat and get some sleep.” He tried to say as sweetly as possible, hoping that his daughter would understand as he tried to softly pry her off your legs. “You’ll see her again soon.” He said, lifting her up into his arms and snuggling her against his chest, the quiet sniffles coming from his daughter as she buried her face in his shoulder were heart shattering, but he didn’t know what to do. “I’m so sorry for that… She never does that. I’ll see you Monday morning…” He said quickly to you, turning around to head out the door.
“Let me know if she’s alright when you get home. If she wants, if it’s alright with you, you can call and I’ll talk to her on the phone if she’s still upset.” Not even her mother would have done something like that for her, but you were offering. He nodded his head, giving you a small smile as he walked out of the classroom, his heart and his mind torn on what to do. Of course he wanted his daughter to be happy, but he obviously couldn’t just move you into his house to make her happy. He was sure that the only reason she was acting this way today was because her mother was supposed to pick her up and ended up letting her down. She wanted to feel some type of motherly bond with someone and that person just ended up being you today. He’d just have to explain to Chohee that you were her teacher and nothing else, or maybe she’d just forget about it anyway and he wouldn’t have to break that news to her in the first place. Even still, he might have been able to come up with a solution for what his daughter was going through, but that still left him with his own thoughts and his own emotions that he didn’t quite know how to handle.
Chohee sat in her carseat in the back row of the car, her head bowed as she focused on his phone that he had handed her to keep her occupied while he drove. “So… Did you have fun today?” He questioned, wanting to know all about her day, not only because he felt like it was his job to know these things, but also because he was intrigued as to why she acted the way she did when he had to take her home. Chohee hummed softly, nodding her head in agreement, a motion that he would have missed if he hadn’t been at a red light and looking at her through the rearview mirror. “That’s good. What movie did you watch?” He pressed further, and while he had already been told by you, he wanted to hear what Chohee had to say.
She clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth as she placed the phone off to the side, her arms folding in front of her chest as she looked straight at the back of his head. “Nemo. I like the fishies. I had popcorn. We cried at the ‘ginning of the movie… mean shark ate the baby fishies. But first I did my work with everyone else… Then they went home. I got to play outside two times on the slides though. I drew a pretty picture for the kitchen too.” She had gone through what seemed like the complete itinerary of what her day had consisted of, telling him about it as if she were an adult herself. He hated the idea of that, the thought of her growing up, knowing that he’s missing out on a majority of everything that happens in her life because of his job. “She said I call her if I upset…” Seungcheol hadn’t thought that she would have caught what she said, he didn’t think she’d actually want to do something like that either, but he knew that there was a reason Chohee was bringing it up. “I upset enough…? I wanna talk to her…”
His eyebrows lowered over his eyes as he took the turn onto his homestreet, glancing at her through the rearview mirror as she grabbed the phone off the side seat and began swiping across it again. “You don’t have to be upset to call Ms. Y/N, she just thought that maybe you’d want to talk to her more if you were upset already.” He explained, not wanting his daughter thinking that she needed to be sad or upset in the slightest bit just to talk to someone. “And I want to talk to you first when we get home. I barely get to see you because I’m working so much. I miss you, honey bunny.” And that was the entire truth. He felt like when he was away from her, an entire half of himself was missing. She was his everything, she’s who made him who he was now, and when he wasn’t with her he just didn’t feel like himself. The most he wanted when he did get to see her was to have a couple minutes with her before she ran off to play with her toys.
She reluctantly agreed to talking to him, the sound coming out as more of a huff as he pulled into the driveway, her tiny hands already working at the car seat straps that held her in. It seemed like she was growing up too fast and it felt like he was missing all of it. “What we talking about?” She mused, hopping out of her seat once he had pulled the keys from the ignition, leaning over the center console to look at him. “You wanna talk about Nemo?” The question was so wholesome, so sweet, and while it wasn’t exactly on his list of things he wanted to talk to her about, the way she asked it was far too adorable to say no to, so he simply nodded, climbing out of the car and quickly making his way around to the back to let her out.
From the moment she stepped foot onto the pavement outside of the car she was talking nonstop about the movie. She spoke of it as if she had never seen it before, although he was sure that Seungkwan or Joshua had watched it with her already. She went through the entire plot, her entire body moving animatedly as she sat next to him on the couch, a chubby cheeked smile spread across her face as she spoke. He couldn’t bring himself to cut her off, she was so excited, so he listened intently, nodding and humming softly whenever she paused and looked to him to make sure he was still listening. It took almost half an hour for her to finally finish telling him about the movie, and by that time he had almost forgotten what he really wanted to talk about. He wouldn’t have remembered it if she hadn't brought it up. “Are you going to hang my art on the fridge, daddy?” She asked, looking down at the tiny corner of the white paper that was sticking out of his pants pocket.
He nodded quickly, pulling the paper out of his pocket and unfolding it carefully to lay in his lap. “Tell me about the drawing first.” He said, trying to keep his voice light and cheerful so she wouldn’t get upset, although seeing it himself had him swallowing back the lump that was slowly building in his throat. “I know that that’s me and you… right?” She nodded in agreement, beaming proudly up at him as she pointed to the two stick figures that depicted the both of them. “You did a really good job on us. I really like the way you colored the house pink and yellow, it’s super pretty.” Her smile somehow grew wider at the compliment, her eyes turning into crescents from her puffy cheeks pushing up against them. Now it was time for the hard part, he had to ask about the other stick figure, the one that was so distant from the other two. He didn’t want to upset her, but he didn’t want her to feel like she had to bottle up any of her feelings that she might have about her mom, he wanted her to know that it was okay to talk about it.
Before he had the chance to utter the first word in the question, her tiny little finger came down on the smaller square next to the stick figure that was labeled as her mother, but her smile never faltered like he thought it would. “And that’s my classroom…” Her finger slid to the stick figure, tapping against it repeatedly with what he could only assume was excitement. “And that’s mom… You call her Ms. Y/N… That’s weird. Can I call her? When is she coming home?”
As hard as he tried, he couldn’t contain the expression of shock that spread across his face when she said it, and his expression was only a visual of a quarter of the shock that he actually felt from hearing her say it. “Well… That’s…” He didn’t know what to say or how to respond to such a thing. Chohee knew who her mother was, at least he tried to make sure that she did. Then again, it wasn’t really something that he could control if his daughter felt that kind of connection to someone other than her own biological mother. It wasn’t exactly his fault that Hajoon wasn’t ever around and he wasn’t going to try to tell Chohee that the way that she was feeling was bad… He’d just have to explain to her that you weren’t her mother. “Do you call Ms. Y/N mom when you’re at school?” He asked, sheepishly and almost afraid to hear her answer, and he let out a soft sigh of relief when she shook her head no. “You do know that… well… she’s not actually your mom… right, honey?” He gnawed on his bottom lip nervously as he watched her face, her little legs dangling and swinging over the edge of the couch as she looked straight out into the room, deep in thought.
“Hmph…” She grumbled, swinging her legs faster, kicking them against the bottom of the couch in frustration as she tried to understand her own thought process. “But… Mom not around… so… Ms. Y/N…” She said your name mockingly in the way that Seungcheol would say it, and he was taken aback to say the least at how sassy she sounded. “She like my mom… but I know… she not…” It was as if saying it made her realize that the words were true, and that realization had a tiny frown forming on her face, her bottom lip jutting out as she pushed herself off the couch and sulked into her bedroom leaving Seungcheol on the couch feeling utterly confused and conflicted on what to do.
Tumblr media
“So let me get this straight… You’re going to ask her teacher over for dinner?” Jeonghan repeated what Seungcheol had just told him. Now that Chohee had left to spend the weekend with his mother, he felt like he could really talk about what was going on and how he felt, but he couldn’t talk to you yet, he needed to talk to one of the other members first. They were like his brothers and he wanted to hear from them if they felt like the choice he was thinking about making seemed right, not only for him, but for Chohee as well. “Did you try to explain to Cho that her teacher isn’t her mom, that she’s just a really nice lady?”
Seungcheol groaned in frustration, pacing around the length of his bedroom, his legs unable to keep still now that he was left alone with all of his thoughts. “Of course I did. It’s not really easy to tell a four year old that the way they feel isn’t correct… Plus, I mean… with the way that Hajoon is, do you really expect Chohee to look at her as her mother?” Jeonghan mumbled something that sounded like a you’re right into the speaker, but before he could say anything in response, Seungcheol continued. “And, it’s not like anything is going to come of it, I just need to talk to her, have a legitimate conversation without a bunch of kids or Chohee around.” He wasn’t exactly lying about the first part, but he wasn’t really telling the truth either. He didn’t really know what was going to happen, but he knew that something had sparked within him when he saw the way you were with his daughter, he knew that he was fond of you, but he wasn’t sure if it was just because of the way you cared for Chohee or if it was something else.
Jeonghan sighed heavily, his lips making the sound of a raspberry being blown before speaking. “It’s up to you what you want to do obviously… You’re a grown man, you’re a father, and I know that you’re going to do what’s best for Chohee, at least, you’ll do what you think is best for her, but I also don’t want to see you in another situation like you were in before. We lost you for a while, and it’s not even about the music or the group, it’s the fact that we don’t like seeing you like that. We’ve known you for a while, you’re a brother to all of us, we just want you to take care of yourself, do what’s best for you.” He knew how the others felt about Hajoon, he knew how much they worried about him after everything that happened, but something about you, the way you looked at him, the way you looked at his daughter, he knew that if anything were to really start between the two of you that it would be different, it would be better.
A bit more chatting and a quick goodbye and the call with Jeonghan was over. Now Seungcheol had to make a decision, make a choice that could affect himself and Chohee in either the best or the worst possible way. If anything went downhill, that could be the difference between you being so sweet and so kind to his daughter, it would be the difference between you looking after his daughter when he or one of the other members were running a little late. Was it a price that he was really willing to pay? His surety was running low, he didn’t feel so sure about anything right now, but he knew that he couldn’t afford to lose you. It wasn’t just himself that he was looking out for either, but Chohee and her feelings. He couldn’t just worry about himself anymore, he had to take care of his daughter, he had to make sure she was happy, and any change in your demeanor towards her, she would pick it up.
It would be so easy if it were just himself that he had to think about, but then again, in that case he would have never met you anyway. Chohee would always be his first priority, and her happiness came above all else in his life, which is why this decision was only becoming harder and harder to come to. If things went well, if everything went without a hitch, the final outcome could make Chohee so happy, something that he loved to see. His daughter's smile was priceless to him, there was no amount of money in the world that would amount to how proud he felt when he saw it and he could only imagine how wide her smile would be if things went smoothly. It was that pride that he wanted to feel, that swelling in his heart when she’d beam up at him, the need to make his daughter happy that had him making the final decision on what to do. Maybe it was crazy of him to go out on a limb like this when there was so much more at stake than just his heart and his daughters happiness, but not being crazy never got anyone anywhere… Hell, being crazy and stepping out on that limb is what had blessed him with Chohee in the first place… what’s the worst that could happen?
4 Years Later
“Are you glad that it’s summertime now?” Chohee asked as you both walked towards your car, the warm breeze that brought along the promise of vacation and a much needed break blew against you and Chohee as you walked through the parking lot. “I think dad has to work a lot though… He doesn’t get summer breaks like we do. Is that fair? I don’t know if it is… How is he going to spend time with me?” She was full of questions, full of excitement at what the next two and a half months would bring. Her long black hair bounced as she skipped along the pavement, the sound of her pencils rattling in her backpack mixed with the sound of her shoes hitting the ground. “Dad said that my mom wants to pick me up for a weekend real soon… Should I go?”
She came to a full stop, looking up at you with eyes that screamed her question at you. It wasn’t that you exactly hated her mother, but you had a lot of reasons to dislike her. Hajoon had practically abandoned Chohee when she was a baby and she had broken Seungcheols heart, you had no reason to actually like her, but it wasn’t your place to tell Chohee whether she should see her mother or not. “You do what you want to do, Cho… If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to. If you do want to go, then I want you to do what makes you happy.” You said as sweetly as possible, but you couldn’t help but feel a pang of worry at the thought of Chohee actually going to spend a weekend with her mother.
“I haven’t seen her in a long time…” She mused, taking a slow step forward before picking up her normal pace and walking towards the car again. It seemed like she was thinking really hard about what to say, how to answer her own question. “Maybe I should ask dad when I get home… But he’d probably say the same thing you did.” She grumbled incoherently under her breath as she climbed into the backseat of your car, tossing her backpack to the side before buckling her seatbelt. “I’ll think about it a little bit longer.” She said, although it seemed like she was mainly talking to herself. She was deep in thought about it, and you wished that you could just answer the question for her, but it wasn’t your place to do that.
“You take all the time you need, Cho.” You murmured, climbing into the drivers side and starting up your car to start the drive home, occasionally glancing in the rearview mirror to see Chohees face contorted into one of questions, answers, confusion, and thoughts. It was like you could see the gears in her head turning as she tried to figure out what to do, and seeing her look so frazzled only added on to your list of reasons to dislike Hajoon even more than you already did.
Tumblr media
With Chohees backpack slung over your shoulder, you stayed a couple steps behind her as she ran to the front door of the apartment, pushing it open and letting out an excited squeal as she ran into the house and out of your view. You could still hear her though, although her voice was meeting your ears as more of a muffled noise than actual words, once you turned the corner you could see that Seungcheol had wrapped her in a tight bear hug, the reason for her almost muted words. “Hey!” He called out to you as you finally walked in, shutting the door softly behind you. He waved to you, a soft smile on his face as he started walking over to you while Chohee stood on his feet. “Seems like Cho had a good last day of school, how was yours though?”
He was teasing you, the silly little smirk that he was trying to contain made itself evident on his face as he looked at you, but you could only sigh, shaking your head as you hung Chohees backpack on the hook on the wall and dropped down onto the couch in the living room. “It’s the same every year. Half the class is gone because the last day doesn’t matter, and the kids that did get sent are so overly excited that I can’t even get them to focus on the movie that I have playing in the front of the room.” There was something in your voice, something in the way you spoke that had Seungcheols eyes narrowing suspiciously as he looked you over. “What?” You hadn’t even noticed it yourself what could possibly have him looking at you that way, but you watched as he squatted down and told Chohee to go play in her room before taking a seat on the couch beside you.
Both of you watched her run off towards her bedroom before his finger was slipping beneath your chin and turning your head so you’d face him. “What’s wrong?” He whispered, his thumb lightly brushing along your bottom lip as his eyes caught yours. It was hard to speak when he looked at you like that, it was hard to speak when he looked at you in general. He was perfect, and no matter how many times you had seen him, it seemed like the reaction you had to him would always be the same. You shrugged lightly, clicking your tongue against the roof of your mouth. You didn’t want to actually answer the question, you knew that the way that you were feeling right now wasn’t right, but it didn’t change the fact that you felt that way anyway. “Y/N…” He cooed your name, trying to pull the answer from you, but when you kept silent, he decided to try to figure it out himself. “I know it’s not because I’m going on tour this summer, you and Cho seem to love it when I’m gone. You always have all the fun…” You side eyed him, giving him a look that told him that he was wrong. That wasn’t the reason that you were upset right now, but you always missed him when he had to leave. “Is it because you’re going to miss your class?” You shook your head, and while he wasn’t particularly wrong, you always missed all of your students that you had to say goodbye to, it didn’t seem like he was getting any closer to the real reason.
Taking a deep breath, you fell over against his side and let the breath out through your nose. “Chohee brought up visiting Hajoon…” You finally admitted, hearing the soft hum of final understanding sound through his chest. “I know that I don’t have the right to be upset… That’s her mother, but… She said that you told her and you didn’t tell me….” You chewed on your bottom lip, a sudden feeling of almost betrayal forming in your stomach as if a match had just been lit. “And I know that you shouldn’t have to tell me because it’s not my business whether Hajoon gets her or not… But… I just want to know that Cho is okay…”
Seungcheols hand ran up and down your back in a motion to try to soothe you as you continued to speak, silent tears slipping over your lower lashes and trickling down your cheeks, tears that he had caught immediately and quickly wiped away with the thumb of his free hand. “I didn’t tell you because you had a lot on your plate at the time, but I was going to tell you.” He whispered, leaning in to kiss the top of your head before leaning back against the couch, pulling you closer to him. “And in regards to it being your business, it is your business. You’re more of a mother to her than Hajoon is, and whether you know it or not, Chohee thinks the same thing. She absolutely adores you, maybe more than I do, but I’m not willing to bet on that just yet.” His attempt at lightheartedness had you letting out a giggle. “I know that you worry about her, and I do too, trust me, I do… but I know that she’s going to be okay because we both know that Hajoon isn’t going to actually follow through with getting her. When was the last time she’s actually picked her up?” The question had you thinking really hard, trying to remember the last time you even saw Hajoon and Chohee in the same room together. The lack of your answer had Seungcheol nodding as if you had already answered his question. “See, you have nothing to worry about. Chohee is going to stay here with us all summer.”
As if on queue, Chohee ran out of her room, diving into the little bit of space that was between you and Seungcheol, nestling against you as she threw her legs up onto his lap. “I get to stay with you and mommy all summer?” She cheered, clearly having been eavesdropping on the entire conversation. “That means we can all go to the beach again like last year, right? I like building sandcastles… Oh! And this time, I’m gonna make mommy get all the way in the water. Remember when we had that big splash fight… that was fun… I like that.” Her little mind wandered into her memories, her stories had you and Seungcheol doing the same thing, letting out quiet chuckles as the images filled your minds. “Oh… Daddy?” She turned to him with wide eyes, her hands clasping together as if she were about to have an extremely serious conversation with him. He hummed softly to let her know he was listening as he drummed lightly on her knees, looking at her intently. “Did you give mommy the ring that I helped you pick out yet? You said that you’d do it during the summer, it’s summer time now. You said that when you give her the ring that it means the two of you stay together forever, I want mommy to stay here forever. Do you want me to get it out of your drawer for you?”
He let out an awkward laugh, his face turning bright red and his eyes just as wide as hers were, but now you were laughing hysterically all while your heart swelled with excitement and love for the man that sat beside you. “Gosh… Cho… That was a really big secret you just told…” He said sheepishly, running his hand through his hair before dropping it down onto his lap and looking at you. “Well I guess since you already said it, do you want to go get it for me so I can give it to her?” Chohee nodded her head, jumping off the couch and bounding across the room as fast as her legs could carry her. “It wasn’t supposed to go like this…” He murmured, watching as Chohee ran back into the living room with the black velvet box that she quickly handed to him.
You scooped her into your arms and pulled her onto your lap, the body still shaking from the laughter that was slowly subsiding. “You know, I think I like this proposal way better, surrounded by my two favorite people in the comfort of the apartment.” You said, letting out an audible gasp when Seungcheol opened the box and revealed the beautifully cut diamond ring, the light reflecting off the facets of the stone as he pulled it out of the box.
“Hmm… I had a whole speech prepared for this but I didn’t have the time to practice it…” He sounded shy now, his thumb and pointer finger shakily holding onto the ring as he grabbed your hand and held it between both of your bodies. “I guess I don’t need to give a whole speech though, I hope you know how much I love you, how much Chohee loves you. You’re a great mom to her, and you didn’t even have to be, but you love her like your own and it makes me so happy. You showed her what a real mom should be, what a real mom is, and you showed me that I don’t have to be afraid to love someone because of what happened in the past. You love me for who I am, not what I do… And I love you for everything that you are… So, will you marry me?”

Regal Love (Jeonghan x Reader)
Summary: You and Jeonghan have been each other’s comfort human since you were born one day apart. Even if he was part of the royal family who is in line for the throne, that still didn’t break your bond with him. You didn’t view Jeonghan as someone who was a higher rank than you. You viewed him as the younger brother that you never had.
When you and Jeonghan started high school, he eventually had feelings for you. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with you and even quit the royal life just so he can be with you in peace and not having to worry about royal power.
Notes:
This may contain a few errors in grammar and flow because this is my first time writing something like this. And please remember to separate fiction and reality. This story is all fiction therefore none of the scenarios happen in real life.
Updates are posted randomly and are written whenever I have freetime to write, which is when I don’t have any school work to finish.
The point of view is 1st person point of view which uses the pronouns I, we, me and us.

Chapter 13 - There's Nothing Worse Than Being Alone
Tumblr media
“Is he asleep?” you asked as Jihoon and Jeonghan stepped out of the room, closing the door behind them. Jihoon nodded.
“Yeah. He’ll be just fine.”
“What happened?” Minnie asked. “He was fine all day.” Jihoon and Jeonghan looked at one another.
“Heat exhaustion, probably.” Jihoon immediately stated. Despite the plethora of questions that would have left someone with, the group seemed content with the answer, knowing it was something fixable and that Joshua would ultimately be okay. That seemed to be enough for them. “Let’s not worry now, let’s let him sleep.” He motioned to Jeonghan, then to you. “Both of you. Come with me.” He said. You nodded, following Jihoon out to the back porch. Hoshi watched for a second as you all disappeared down the stairs, heading to the back porch.
With the rest of the group away, Jihoon sat you both down. “Okay.” He said.
“Is he really okay?” Jeonghan asked. “He dropped to the floor so fast and wasn’t moving.”
“I thought he died…” you choked out.
“He’s fine,” Jihoon assured. “He’s really lucky, though.” Jihoon sighed. “It seems to be more gradual with him than it was for me. The pain I felt was so intense it knocked me out right away. Since he hasn’t actually done anything to screw himself over yet, his body is still being affected but at a much more manageable pace. That won’t last, though, and if he keeps this up, he’ll end up stuck here.”
Wait… stuck here? “What do you mean?” You asked, worry in your voice.
“He won’t be able to reenter heaven,” Jeonghan said simply. Jihoon leaned back in his seat as Jeonghan motioned to him. “Like Jihoon.”
“Wh- Oh.” You blinked. “Oh!” your eyes widened in shock. “Oh…” they furrowed in sadness as Hoshi popped into your head.
“I think the next letter in the English alphabet is P,” Jihoon said. “I managed to peek at Joshua’s back when we got him into bed. Nothing is burned, nothing looks infected.”
“What is he doing that’s causing this?” You asked.
“He’s actively trying to sabotage both his and Jeonghan’s chances of getting into heaven,” Jihoon stated. The bluntness of the comment stunned you, and when you looked at Jeonghan, he only nodded in confirmation. You noticed he looked just as frazzled and confused as you did, if not more so as he chewed on one of his fingernails. “Well, kind of. He clearly doesn’t want to, but since he’s been on earth so long, he’s starting to experience more intense feelings of jealousy, anger, and lust. These are emotions you won’t typically find in an angel.”
“So he’s….what? Jealous of Mingyu?” When the duo only nodded their heads, your eyes immediately widened. Cheeks flush pink, you cover your mouth. “Oh my God. I confessed to him last night thinking it was Mingyu!”
“I know.” Jihoon snorted. “I saw.”
“Do you think that because of me, he-.”
“No, no, no.” Jeonghan immediately said, putting a hand on your back. While he did not have the power to calm your anxiety, the gentle touch he had was enough. “That’s not it. He would have to confess to you, or tell someone who he is not in contact with that he’s an angel. He hasn’t done any of that, but I guess since his feelings are so intense…”
“Then what about you?” you looked at him. Jeonghan laughed nervously, scratching the back of his neck.
“I’m more into older women.” he grinned at his attempt to lighten the mood. It seemed to work when the tips of your lips curled up into a smile. “I’ve felt it too. The anger, at least. He and I have gotten into more arguments the longer we’ve been here. It’s hard to control after a while. That’s why we hoped this entire thing wouldn’t take very long.”
“Well, what do we do?” you asked.
“We can’t do anything,” Jeonghan said. “Joshua has to come to his own sense or face the consequences.” Jeonghan seemed pained saying that out loud, and you put a hand on his arm.
“That won’t happen.” You assured. “You both have done too much for me, and I won’t let it end up in vain.” Jeonghan seemed comforted by this, nodding his head.
“It better not, or he’ll be damned to a life to me saying ‘I told you so’.” Jihoon rose from the table. “For now, let’s get some sleep.” As both you and Jeonghan rose, Jihoon stopped you both with one last comment. “Oh, I totally forgot. If Hoshi mentions anything about you two being angels, deny it. He’s only seen me. He’s not stupid, so as long as you don’t reveal yourself or confirm it, you’ll both be fine. Probably.” Jeonghan had to scoff at Jihoon’s last choice of wording before everyone finally headed back inside. At the end of the kitchen archway was Mingyu, arms crossed as he seemingly waited for you guys to come back in. He immediately studied your expression to see how you were after what happened.
“Everything okay?” he asked.
“Yeah.” You assured. “Everything is fine. I’m sorry your whole event was cut short.”
“Sorry? Don’t be. I’m glad he’s alright. I might have to kick his ass later, though.” You laughed a bit, which relieved Mingyu. “Get some rest, then. You’ll be busy tomorrow.” A warm smile looked down at you, making your once anxiety-filled stomach calm down just a bit. “I’ll probably turn in myself soon.”
The group around you agreed, and you nodded your head. “Okay. Goodnight.” You said. The men watched you head upstairs, closing the door to your bedroom. Mingyu leaned back to look at the stairs, waiting to hear if there was any commotion coming from your room. He had to make sure you were asleep. Once the coast was clear, he clapped his hands.
“Alright, people, let’s go.” He motioned down the hall, where Minnie, Hoshi, and Seungkwan came scurrying down, boxes and balloons in hand. “We have to work double with Joshua out for the night. Let’s get this done soon so we can get up early tomorrow, before her.” He watched Mina stroll down the hall just as everyone began rummaging through boxes. He smiled. “Hey. Ready? I figured you could do balloons.”
“Uh, I’m kind of…” Mina was stopped when Mingyu, grinning ear to ear, handed her a few bags of balloons. She watched as he immediately stopped for a second, processing her face.
“You tired?” he asked. Mina took a deep breath, feeling Mingyu put a hand on her forehead. “You’re not warm.”
“No. I’m okay.” She assured. “I’ll go start these.” She motioned to the couch, walked over, and took a seat as she opened the bag of balloons. Mingyu watched her for a second, before turning his attention back to the boxes and getting to work himself.
Meanwhile, as Jeonghan was picking up a few banners, one of which was being hung over the stairs to immediately catch your eyes as you woke up, Hoshi approached him. He grabbed the other side, motioning to the steps with tape in his hand. As the duo walked over, Hoshi finally spoke up: “Is everything okay with Shua-Hyung?” He asked. Jeonghan looked over, nodding in reassurance.
“Yeah. He’s tougher than he looks.” He assured. As Hoshi watched Jeonghan try to hang up one part of the banner, he looked over to Woozi, who sat beside Mina and offered her a pump to make blowing a handful of balloons much easier.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
You both have made a mockery of angels. You’re lucky you’re even being given another chance.
We’re sorry. Just-.
Junhui’s wings were almost completely burned off because of you two!
Seungcheol, come on.
Sorry, there’s nothing I can do.
When Joshua’s eyes opened, he saw himself staring at the ceiling of his bedroom. He blinked, trying to slow his heartbeat before he started moving around. After a moment, he slowly rose upright, rubbing the back of his head. He could see the sun just barely breaking through the trees. When he looked further down the room, he saw that Jeonghan was already long gone, his bed already made. What happened? The last thing I remember is being at the fireworks on the beach. His legs wobbled a bit, but he managed to make his way outside into the hallway. He saw that the doors were all open, except for one – yours. It was only a few seconds later that he heard rustling and commotion downstairs. “What time is it?” he muttered, before making his way downstairs.
“She’s up already?” He heard one person gasp.
“Shit, fuck, hurry up!” Another whispered. Joshua furrowed his brows, slowing his pace as he reached the bottom of the steps, his eyes immediately noticing the ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ banner dangling above his head.
“Right. That’s today…” he said softly. When he looked up, all eyes were on him. “It’s not my birthday.” He managed to say with a tired, yet amused grin on his face.
“You’re up earlier than I thought,” Jihoon mentioned as he rose from the couch.
“How do you feel?” Jeonghan asked.
“Fine.” He said. Approaching Jeonghan, Joshua reached down and picked up a balloon. “I was asleep all night?”
“Like a rock.” He said. “Does your back hurt?”
“No. Not really.” Joshua said. Just then, Mingyu hissed a sound that a dog could barely register, alerting everyone’s attention.
“I think I heard her wake up.” He said. Joshua felt Jeonghan and Seungkwan lead him behind one of the walls as everyone else shuffled out of view of the stairs. Joshua, still sleepy, watched as you padded down the stairs, rubbing your eyes and trying to smooth out your hair.
“Hm?” When you looked up, you also caught sight of the banner above your head, feet stopping at the bottom. Just as your eyes registered the scene around you of a beautifully decorated living room, your friends popped out and shouted.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” You gasped, looking around as everyone, led by the ever-boisterous Hoshi and Seungkwan, began singing you Happy Birthday. A grin formed on your face as you looked around.
“When the hell did you set all of this up?” You asked, looking around.
“While you were sleeping,” Minnie said. She hurried up, enveloping you in a tight hug as the song came to an end. You laughed a bit.
“Aw, that’s so cute. Thank you, guys.” You watched as Seungkwan hurried over, a plate in his hands with a set of chocolate chip muffins all set in a circle, a little candle placed on the one in the middle. “…Is this my cake?” you grinned.
“It’s seven in the morning, you glutton!” Seungkwan gasped. “Who eats cake at 7 in the morning?!”
“Me, on my birthday.” You replied, before giving in and quickly blowing out the little candle on your set of muffins. Taking the plate from Seungkwan, you motioned it to everyone. “Shall we?” You asked. Everyone shuffled forward, taking a muffin to eat for breakfast. You watched as Joshua approached. Immediately, you thought back to what you and Jihoon had discussed the night prior. For a second, your mind told you to be angry with him for his actions. However, seeing his lips press and mold together as if they were trying to form the right words before he spoke them, you couldn’t bring yourself to feel that way. Being angry will only make things harder. “How are you feeling? Did you sleep okay?”
“Hm. Oh yeah.” He smiled. “Just fine. I’m better now.”
“We were worried. Don’t do that again.” Joshua chuckled a bit, nodding.
“Sorry, I worried you…” he said softly. You took an extra muffin, l handing it to him. When he offered you a confused look, you smiled.
“You have to eat up after last night. Come on, now.” Joshua hesitated, but took the muffin with a ‘thank you’. Mingyu slithered up beside you, grinning.
“Are you excited for dinner tonight?” he asked.
“Oh, yeah.” You smiled.
“Our reservation is at 7:30. Is that okay?”
“That’s perfect.” You said. As Mingyu turned his attention for a moment, your eyes fell on the one person left who hadn’t come to have breakfast. Mina was still on the couch, a plastic balloon in her hands as she squeezed it tightly. You could see her brows furrow in frustration each time she pressed her hands together with the balloon inside. “What are the plans for the rest of the day?” You asked the group curiously, turning to them instead.
As if on cue, Hoshi and Seungkwan made their presence known again. Seungkwan was holding a volleyball in his hands, both of them grinning.
“Beach volleyball.” They said in unison.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
“What do you mean I can’t play?” Joshua asked, eyes wide. He watched as everyone hurried out to the backyard, where a large volleyball net was perched up. Joshua leaned over the railing, then looked back to you and Jeonghan. “I’m fine.”
“You should take it easy for right now.” You suggested softly. “Jihoon said you got lucky yesterday with what happened, and it could have been worse.”
“But volleyball isn’t going to make it worse.”
“Yeah, but something else is.” Jihoon snorted, Joshua, looking over at the smug angel resting against the railing just a few feet away.
“Jihoon said he’ll stay back, too.” You added. Joshua looked at Jeonghan, who was getting some hair out of his eyes and putting on a pair of sunglasses.
“You’re just not going to say anything?” Joshua asked. Jeonghan lowered the sunglasses a bit down his nose, eyeing his friend.
“Keep score?” he grinned, putting his sunglasses back up on his eyes as he led you down the steps. Joshua could hear everyone cheering for you both to hurry up, you quickly apologizing as you did. Joshua sighed, resting his elbows on the railing and peering down. He heard footsteps coming from his left, and Woozi was quickly at his side, resting against the railing again and taking a drink of water.
“What are you doing here? Other than mocking me?” Joshua asked.
“I wanted to stay behind and check on you.” He said. When he saw Joshua look confused, Woozi shrugged. “You can kick the angel out of heaven, but can’t forget everything he learned while he was there, I guess.” He said.
“So, what do you want to check on me for?”
“Tch. Like you don’t know.” Woozi said.
“I don’t.”
Jihoon groaned in annoyance. “Jeez, you’re becoming more stubborn by the day.” He turned to Joshua. “Do I need to spell it out?! You, high-ranking angel Joshua Hong are head over heels in love with a human girl.” Joshua leaned forward, covering Jihoon’s mouth with his hands and hissing at him to be quiet. He could feel the slimy smirk under his hands, and he quickly pulled away. Jihoon pointed to you. “Specifically, that one,” Joshua said nothing, only averting his eyes away from the snickering fallen angel. “No need to even confirm it. I see it on your face. That must hurt, having to help her basically friendzone you.” With still no reply, Jihoon continued. “A word of advice?”
“Why would I take advice from the likes of you?” Joshua asked.
“I’m the closest thing you have to a warning. And it seems you still fucking need one. I saw you almost bare your chest to her on the porch Friday. In fact, I’ve only seen the two of you together for a day and a half, and that wasn’t even the last time you tried.” Joshua thought it over for a second, your eyes, glossy yet full of love, staring up at him as you bared your heart out the first night at the house. Even knowing it was dedicated to someone else, Joshua still felt flustered. Curiosity beating him, he looked over at Jihoon one last time. He was watching the scene below of teams being divided up, 4 to 3 at the moment. Joshua followed the fallen angel gaze to Hoshi, who was standing beside Jeonghan and you, waiting for the volleyball to be served. You were motioning him farther back on the court, and he did so, bouncing with every step. He saw Mingyu, Mina, Minnie, and Seungkwan on the other side. Mina stood by Mingyu’s side and smiled as they readied themselves for the game.
“Do you know the full story of what happened?” Jihoon asked to fill the silence.
“You showed yourself to Hoshi without a contract,” Joshua said. “Like you’re not supposed to. I’m not doing that.”
“True,” Jihoon said. “But you’re about to bare your entire soul to the girl you’re supposed to be helping. You’re about to actively prevent yourself and Jeonghan from finishing the contract for being selfish. Doesn’t seem very angel-like to me.”
“How do you know what I’m going to do?
“I did the same thing, idiot!” Jihoon snapped. Joshua flinched a bit, his frown still firmly on his face. “I did the same thing.”
---------- 2 years prior------------
“Hey.” A voice called, making Jihoon look up. He brushed some hair out of his face to see a man before him. His backpack was slung over his shoulder, and he had a beaming smile. “Mind if I sit here? All the other seats are taken.”
Jihoon looked around the bookstore. There were actually many other tables available for him to sit him. Why did he want to sit here? Just as Jihoon was about to turn and ask that question aloud, he was already sitting beside him.
“Wh- hey.” Jihoon frowned. “I didn’t say yes. There’s plenty of seats, you liar.”
Hoshi chuckled a bit. “I know.” He said. “I hate reading alone though, and I have a lot to study for. Please?” he batted his eyes and pouted in an overly dramatic fashion that made Jihoon’s cheeks tint a bit pink.
“Uh. Yeah, whatever I guess.” He muttered. Glancing back down at his book, he tried to block out the sound of the guy across from him setting his textbook down on the table. That is, he was able to until he spoke.
“I’m Kwon Soonyoung, but everyone I know calls me Hoshi.” Jihoon glanced back up and saw that smile again.
“…Jihoon.” He said.
A smile. “Jihoon? Do you have a nickname people call you?”
“What?”
“Your friends. What do your friends call you?”
“We’re not friends.” Jihoon clarified.
“We will be when I know your nickname.”
Okay. Jihoon had to chuckle at that one. “Uh, Woozi, I guess.”
“Woozi, cool! It sounds mysterious yet still cute. Like you.” Now Woozi’s entire face turned a bright red. At least, he assumed it did, because Hoshi started laughing. “Oh jeez, did that make you blush?! Sorry, sorry! I just had to say it.”
“Uh-huh…” Woozi muttered.
Hoshi just ended up…being around after that. Whenever Woozi found himself nestled in the farthest corner of the bookstore, unbothered with a book in hand, Hoshi would pop in and rustle up his peace. He’d talk about the new adjustments to school, his part-time job, his friends, really anything. Especially tigers. He fucking loved tigers. How did Woozi know this? Because when he looked up one day at Hoshi during one of his ramblings, he had his hand up in a claw-like motion.
“…What on earth are you doing?” he asked, setting his book down.
“It’s my trademark.” He beamed. “Instead of a wave, I do this. Hehe~.”
“Why?”
“…It’s my trademark.” Hoshi simply repeated. “We should make you a trademark.”
“What? A trademark? No, I’m ok I-.”
“Put your hand on your cheek.” It was as if Hoshi wasn’t even listening. “…Go on. Like you’re making a heart.”
“Uhm…okay.” Woozi wasn’t sure what was convincing him to do this – it must be the eyes – but he pressed his hand to his cheek. Hoshi leaned forward, taking Woozi’s hand and adjusting it. He popped Woozi’s palm out a bit, so it resembled the shape of half of a heart. “There. Perfect.”
“I feel ridiculous.”
“You look kind of adorable.” He laughed. “Now we both have our trademark.” Hoshi held up his paw hand sign again. Woozi avoided his eyes, setting his hand down and standing.
“I’m leaving now.”
“Wh- hey!” Hoshi watched Woozi grab his things and head out. “I’m sorry.” He scrambled to get his things and followed behind. “Did I upset you?”
“No.” Woozi lied. When he went past the door, hoping it would close in Hoshi’s face, Hoshi simply pushed it back out and kept his pace with Woozi. “Soonyoung-.”
“Hoshi.” Hoshi clarified. Woozi raised an eyebrow.
“Hoshi.” Woozi corrected, though slightly annoyed. “Why are you following me?”
Hoshi shrugged. “We’re friends now,” Hoshi said. Woozi was silent, hoping for more of an explanation. “…When I saw you sitting alone for the first time….it looked like you needed a friend.” Woozi felt in that moment his heart began to speed up. What the heck was going on? He rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. “Did I misread it?” Hoshi frowned a bit.
“Uh…no. No, I guess you didn’t,” he said, guilt washing over him as he tried to calm himself down. How could he, an angel trying to get back into heaven, abandon the pure innocence of this guy who just wanted to befriend him? What did he have to lose by spending more time with him? “…Why don’t we…I don’t know, go find something to eat. You hungry?”
“Starved,” Hoshi said. “I have a bit of time before I have to get back to campus for class. I know a few close places.” Woozi nodded, motioning his hand.
“Lead the way.” He watched Hoshi walk in front of him, rattling off a bunch of different places he had been to with his friends recently. Woozi trailed behind silently. He couldn’t help it, Lord knew, but the more Hoshi rattled off random lunch spots he had never heard of, the more it made Woozi smile.
The duo had settled into a pretty easy routine: meet at the bookstore every Wednesday, get lunch, and have Hoshi back at school by the time class started up for him. Woozi had no reason to deny it, he had nothing better to do at the time.
The duo were headed back to campus after a stop at their favorite burger spot. Hoshi was deep into explaining why he was late today, Seungkwan stopped him to complain
“He says I haven’t been hanging out with everyone recently.” Hoshi frowned. “But I told them I’ve been busy.”
“I’m sure they’ll come around. “Woozi said. “If not, forget them.”
“I can’t do that. They’re my best friends.”
“Best friends don’t monitor your life.”
“…You’re pretty negative,” Hoshi said.
“Huh?”
“You know. Negative. ‘Glass half empty’ kind of guy.” Hoshi paused, then added: “It’s not bad. You’re just different than me. Have you been that way you’re whole life?”
“Uh, I guess so.” Woozi thought back to his time in heaven, and why he got punished to Earth in the first place. “My old friends told me I was so pessimistic for my own good.”
“I don’t think it’s bad sometimes. If anything, it makes you unique. Wouldn’t it be a lot to handle if both of us were the same?”
“I guess,” Woozi said. “I can barely handle just you.” Hoshi laughed a bit, eating a French fry before continuing.
“A lot of people have told me my whole life I’m too hyper for my own good. People can be so judgmental.”
Woozi’s ears perked up a bit. He had been talking to Hoshi for a month and a half at this point, each Wednesday feeling far away until it came. Then, gone in a flash. He was hoping Hoshi would share something he could use to guide them into a contract. Woozi was desperate to tell Hoshi the truth about him. But the consequences of such actions lingered in the back of his mind. He had to be careful.
“Who?” Woozi asked.
“My parents. My brothers. All of them told me I was…a bit different from everyone else.” He shrugged. “I guess I always knew that.”
“Oh, yeah?” he asked. “Maybe it’s because you use your hand like a tiger paw.” Hoshi laughed at the comment, and Woozi couldn’t help but smile.
“Yeeeeaaaaah. I guess.”
Woozi had to think of his next few sentences carefully. “Have you ever thought of trying to reconcile with them?”
“A few times.” He began. Woozi smiled more. “But then I decided there’s no point.” His smile dropped, but he said nothing. “If I didn’t have the home life I did, I wouldn’t be who I am now. There’s no point in changing what’s happened. I’m happy where I am.” Hoshi’s statement made Woozi feel a bit tense. The one thing Hoshi had shared with him thus far and he had no intention of getting help to change it. What was Woozi to do? As Hoshi continued to talk, now moving on to the idea of his final exams, Woozi sighed.
“I’m sorry your family was so hard on you.” He said.
“Hm? Oh, it’s ok. Like I said, most of my decisions in life were because of my family. I’m happy now, so it’s not all too bad.”
“Still.” Hoshi shoved Woozi playfully.
“Hey. No use getting upset over my problems, Woozi. I’ve made great friends like you. What more could I want?”
“But-.”
“Ahh. Nope. I want us to be happy when we hang out, okay?”
“Uh…” Woozi saw the campus coming up the skyline at the end of the road. “Okay.” He said.
“Maybe we can all hang out together. You, me, and my friends. They’re nice people. They’ll totally like you! Even if you’re a bit negative.” Woozi smiled again. It wasn’t long after that the duo had to part, another 7 days before they could see one another again. Hoshi flashed a quick tiger paw in the direction. Woozi reluctantly put his half-hearted hand on his cheek, and the facial response Hoshi gave alone almost put Woozi in an early grave. He beamed, waving Woozi off before disappearing behind the campus walls. Woozi watched him, rubbing his shoulder silently. “What the heck kind of hole have I dug myself into now?” he asked.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
“The longer we hung out, the more I didn’t care about anything else. I didn’t care about why I was put on earth in the first place. For all I knew, for all I cared, I was put on earth to be with him.” Woozi motioned below them, and Joshua’s eyes followed. “At that point, I thought things would be so much easier if I just told him how I felt. Despite what could happen, I’d at least be happy here on earth with him.” He clicked his tongue. “I was thinking like a human.”
-------------20 months prior-----------------------
“Hey. Soonyoung?” Woozi looked to his left. Hoshi, as excitable as ever, was watching a TV show the both of them had been watching for hours. Multiple episodes, yet Hoshi looked at each one as if it were the first time he had ever seen it. It made Woozi smile. “Soonyoung.”
“Hm?” His eyes didn’t leave the screen. “Woozi, I told you to call me Hoshi. I prefer it.”
Woozi sighed. “Hoshi…”
“Yeeees~.” He cooed. When he did not get an immediate response, Hoshi looked over. He immediately sensed Woozi’s unease, and he frowned. “What’s wrong? Are you ok?”
“Uh, yeah.” He stammered. “Actually…no. I really need to talk to you.” Hoshi’s frown deepened.
“Okay. Now, I’m kind of nervous.” He tried to play the whole situation off, mainly to hide his own growing anxiety about what was happening.
“Well, before I say anything, I need you to understand something.” Hoshi nodded, quiet to let Woozi continue. “What I’m about to tell you, might sound really unbelievable at first. But I need you to trust me, okay?”
“Okay,” Hoshi said softly.
“And I need you to try not to freak out.”
“What? Are you some kind of a secret agent or something?” Woozi couldn’t help but laugh. He always admired how Hoshi was able to take a tense situation and bring some much-needed humor into it. It soothed Woozi a bit. Woozi looked up at the boy before him and received a reassuring smile in return that folded his eyes into gentle half-moons.
“Heh, no, not that.” He began. Woozi sighed. “Might as well just get it over with.”
“What do you me-.” Hoshi was immediately silenced by Woozi, who unbuttoned the buttons lining his grey button down, and shrugging the shirt off entirely, exposed his chest. Hoshi’s entire face froze. “Eh?” Realizing then what was happening, his eyes immediately darted away, heart racing as his cheeks got hot. “WOAH, WOAH! I had no idea this is what you meant by having something to tell me!” Woozi cocked a confused eyebrow as he looked at the flustered man sitting before him. Hoshi, unaware that Woozi had stopped moving, continued to blabber incoherent sounds of panic. “This is moving waaaaay too fast!”
“What? Soonyoung.” Woozi said gently, but it fell on deaf ears.
“You’re great and everything. It’s nothing against you, but-.”
“Hoshi,” Woozi repeated, feeling his back muscles twitch just a bit. “Please, I-.”
“I don’t even know if I like you like that!”
Silence. The room fell into thick painful silence. Woozi blinked, watching as Hoshi tried his best to catch his breath and steady himself, eyes still avoiding him at all costs. Woozi set his shirt onto his lap, blinking just a few times at what Hoshi just said.
Put your hand on your cheek like a heart. Cute! Now, we both have a trademark!
It’s mysterious and cute. Like you!
“…What?” Woozi’s question was swallowed up as a gust of air burst through from behind him, back flinching in every which way to make way for his two large, feathery wings to spread out behind him. Woozi didn’t move, eyes wide as he watched the wings cast a shadow over both his and Hoshi’s faces.
It took a second, but Hoshi blinked, looking back over at Woozi. Woozi immediately felt his back tighten, his heart clenched, and his brain stopped working as Hoshi’s eyes went wide.
“Wh-wh-wh- WHAT THE HELL?!” Hoshi shouted. He scrambled back in his seat. Unfortunately for him, the edge of the couch came sooner than expected, and he fell backward, cursing as he hit his head on the floor. Despite the plush rug underneath, his head was still ringing as it collided with the floor. “Augh!” He groaned, clutching the back of his head in pain.
“Hoshi.” Woozi crawled over to the edge of the couch, peering down as Hoshi began to sit himself up. “I can explain. I can explain, I just-.” It was then that those back pains he had been feeling, the chest compressions that were making it hard to breathe, all began to rev up ten times what they were a few seconds ago. As Hoshi sat back up, eyes readjusting to a normal view, he could hear a groan of pain. “Aw, fuck.”
“Woozi?” He murmured, standing back up to get a better view of what was happening. “Woozi, what’s wrong?” Woozi grabbed hold of his shoulder with one hand, fingers digging into his skin so hard it cut a wound. Hoshi expected there to be some blood, even just a bit. When nothing came out, his eyes widened in surprise. Woozi leaned forward, hair covering his face as beads of sweat formed along his ears and forehead. Hoshi, now completely unphased by the feathery sight before him, knelt down to help steady Woozi. “Hey. Are you okay?”
“Yeah.” Woozi managed to gasp out. “I’ll be fine. I just-.” With another grunt of pain, Hoshi looked up. The beautiful white feathers he had just seen glitter before him began to darken. Some fell off and scattered along the carpet and couch. Hoshi watched as the ones that remained tacked to his back turned black, darkening like a meal being left on the grill just a bit too long. “Shit! Shitshitshitshitshitshit.”
“Okay, let’s lie you down,” Hoshi said. He tried to look nearby for a blanket, not wanting to leave Woozi’s side. However, that proved not to be a problem, as before he knew it, Woozi fell limp in his arms, the pain most likely being too much for his body to handle any longer.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
“Next thing I knew, I woke up on his couch,” Jihoon said, pulling a leg to his chest. “Hoshi was asleep on the chair next to me. It looked like he had been crying.” The memory alone sent a deep, somber chuckle through his lips, and Joshua remained quiet until he was done. “I never ever wanted to make him cry.”
“What did you do?” Joshua asked curiously. Jihoon sighed.
“I left.” He said. “I couldn’t stay and explain myself. The damage had been done. I broke the rules, and-.” He motioned to his back. “Lost my wings as a result.”
“Why didn’t you just make a contract with him? I bet you could have convinced him somehow.”
“What would that have changed?” he asked, eyes looking immediately at Joshua, it made him feel like he was being pierced with a dagger. Jihoon’s eyes still had so much hurt and guilt trapped inside of them, even two years later. “He didn’t want to change anything. He was already happy, what else could I have done? I could have made five, ten, a million contracts with him but nothing would have changed. I still would have ended up this way at some point. I couldn’t hide how I felt forever.”
Joshua nodded. When he glanced back down at you on the grass below, he saw you hurrying to follow the volleyball that Seungkwan had served. Jeonghan, mischievous yet determined as always, popped up behind you and grabbed you by the waist, making you shriek in surprise as he grabbed the ball instead, serving it back into the air. Joshua’s eyes looked to Mingyu, jealousy immediately felt as he called out to Jeonghan.
“CHEATER!” He shouted. Defeated, Jeonghan raised his hands in the air before Mingyu headed over. Joshua smiled a bit and rested his chin in his arms as you continued playfully, blissfully unaware of the conversation happening only a few feet above you.
Joshua was refocused when Jihoon began to speak. “You want to end up like me? Wandering around aimlessly – alone – because you thought you could be happy with a human?”
“But-.”
“Jeonghan won’t be able to stay forever. He wants to go back. And your girl down there...” He pointed. “Doesn’t even want you.”
The last part hurt Joshua more than he thought, though he knew it was the truth. “You can’t deny it anymore. If you do, you’ll only be damning yourself to an eternity of loneliness. I don’t think that’s worth it, and I would know…”
Joshua turned back to the group playing down below once again, watching as Mingyu held the volleyball above his head, way too high for you to reach. Both you and Minnie tried to get it, laughing through it all as Mingyu continued to tease you both on your height. When Mingyu finally threw it, both men watched the ball fly until it landed in the hands of a giggling man in a tiger tank top. Joshua looked over at Woozi, who ended by saying:
“There is nothing…absolutely nothing…worse than being alone.”
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
“Joshua!” You called when you saw him hurrying down to the court. “I told you to rest.”
“I couldn’t. I was bored. Let me play.” He said. Questioned glanced passed by the group, but Joshua only added: “If I get tired, I’ll stop. Promise.”
“Okay…Then you’re just in time for another round. You’re on our team.” Joshua nodded, followed by immediately taking your hand into his. You were shocked as you felt him pull you into a tight hug, shocking everyone around you. You were confused, but you reached up and offered him a hug back. “Joshua?”
“Sorry, just hold on.” He said. You blinked, eyes scanning the faces you could with what little motion your neck had. Minnie looked shocked, Seungkwan looked shocked, and Mingyu looked pissed. “He’ll say something in 3…2…1.”
“JOSHUA WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!” Mingyu shouted. Joshua’s laugh vibrated against you as he finally pulled away, looking at Mingyu and grinning. You weren’t sure what it was, but Joshua’s energy felt…different. Much closer to what it was when you first crossed his path.
“What does it look like? I’m taking my chance since you’re taking too long!” He saw Mina’s eyes widen in shock along with Mingyu’s.
“Wha- DID YOU MISS THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY I PUT TOGETHER!?” He shouted. Joshua immediately released you as Mingyu jumped over the net. He grabbed the volleyball, charging after Joshua until he hid behind Jeonghan, who also had a grin on his face.
“Don’t worry, Joshua. I’ll support you.” Jeonghan said, which only made Mingyu angrier.
“What a turn of events,” Seungkwan muttered behind a laugh.
“You two are traitors!” You heard Mingyu shout in annoyance, which only seemed to rile them both up more. Joshua once again reached out to take the ball, staring at Mingyu for a second, who was pouting like a toddler. Just then, Joshua tossed the ball in Mingyu’s direction. His quick reflexes allowed him to catch it, but he looked at Joshua with a confused eye rather than an annoyed one.
“….What are heck are you staring at?” Joshua asked, now completely deadpan and serious. He walked over, taking the ball back into his grasp. With his straight expression, he tossed the ball over the net. “I’m trying to play volleyball. What’s with all of these distractions?” You couldn’t control your laughter at his comment, pushing him away as he approached you once again.
“Oh, shut up.” You scoffed. Joshua smiled, before pumping a fist a you.
“Ready to win?.” He said. You nodded, pressing your fist against his as well. “Fighting.”
“Fighting!” You shouted.
As the game began, Hoshi caught a glimpse of another figure heading down the steps. He looked over to see Woozi walking over, plopping himself down on the chair beside the scoreboard.
He immediately thought back to the past few days, and what would happen if he chose to cause a scene. Gulping, he called out: “Are you playing too, Woozi?”
“Ah. No.” Woozi called, unable to hold back his smile. He motioned to the scoreboard. “I’ll keep score.”
Despite the clear tension between the two, Hoshi threw up two thumbs up that transformed into tiger paw hands in a show of support for Woozi’s choice, and for a second, Woozi got to remember what heaven felt like.

🗝A voicemail they saved
Send an Icon for... Phone Edition Meme
This message is older than the rest. It lives on a memory card, saved there safe and sound and untouched by phone changes as technology demanded upgrades. When it begins to play the sound of a raucous knees up at an East End local filters through - a chorus of 'Appy Burfday!' being sung by voices Ronnie's known for years. And then-- Her.
'Ron luv, i's Rose! I've nicked th'phone quick - we're passin' it rahnd for yah! But I've nicked it quick t'tell yah specially -- I love you, boy. You're me li'le light, you are. Don't care 'ow big y'get. Y'll always be me light. Keep smilin', darlin'. Chin up. Next foot forward. Love you always, always, always. 'Appy Seventeenf burfday sweet'eart. See you aftah y'get in from work.'
The message ended without any further additions - Rose, bless her, had clicked the call off out of habit instead of passing it round for others to add their couple'a pennies in birthday wishes. But Ron, years later as he listened to that old message for the billionth time, didn't care. It made him want to smile most times he heard it; choked him up on others, for all he could barely properly cry these days. Invariably though, no matter the feelings it brought on, it drew her memory - Rose's memory - back to him. And sometimes, rare sometimes when the tides were right, she'd come visit.

mingyu struggled to pinpoint an exact moment in his life which he could blame for his current circumstances.
it was as easy for him to say that sneaking into his good friends wonwoo and jihoon’s room past the stroke of midnight was the cause, as it were to say growing up at his local orphanage was at fault. hell, if the reasoning travelled down this path, it could also be justified that by simply existing he’d cause himself to arrive at his current position. perhaps this was his destiny, every event of his life leading up to this climax, worthless in the grand scheme of fate for every decision he had believed to have made was manipulated for the sole purpose of mingyu in the situation he was in as of present; torn with the constant conflict of emotion he was experiencing.
this was where his life had led him, 20,000 metres deep into a swirling, unforgiving vortex where the abnormal became evident with every blink of the eye, and where it intended to end, it seemed.
the sky overhead had vanished from sight two layers into the unnatural phenomenon, when the fog by their feet had thickened to a substance that clung moist against every vulnerable patch of skin and surface. mingyu never thought he would come to miss the cloudy skies of his mediocre hometown. where had his thirst for adrenaline gone now? but after a tormenting week treading deeper and deeper into the abyss’ claws, mingyu had yearned for familiarity.
when his stomach gave way on the third layer, mingyu missed most the plain bowl of congee the orphanage served to him every morning despite its lack of taste and colour.
when his eyes started to leak pus and blood, mingyu missed most the shimmering sun, burning on the edge of the horizon every evening despite its glare on his skin.
there was much the boy felt grateful for, oh how he only came to this realisation now, 20,000 metres far from home. his goal to reach the very depth of the abyss slipped from his hands like running water, gathered only by the company his friends provided him. mingyu never felt more grateful that he hadn’t entered alone.
if his naivety had gotten away from him yet again, mingyu shivered at the prospect of descending without the companionship of his three closest friends, wonwoo, jihoon and lyra. he never sourced his complaints outside of his head, for every disaster that he experienced, he knew his friends experienced the same suffering alongside him, comfort in the form of unspoken understanding. mingyu knew he would be able to overcome these mishaps as long as their companionship never left him.
however, god’s sense of humour must be twisted for the first night of the fifth layer, the last layer of mingyu’s sanity thinned.
“fuck!” jihoon swore. his hand shook in the tangles of his hair, the other hovering over wonwoo’s body as if uncertain. “fuck, fuck, fuck!”
mingyu heard jihoon’s cursing as if submerged underwater for his head went static from his own worry. he tipped his backpack upside down in desperation, seeking an item his sub-conscious knew didn’t exist. hadn’t they packed an antidote for this specific reason? but it had been long gone, shattered and spilt over the edge of a crumbling cliff after a desperate struggle of power between a gnarly beast and mingyu’s life. that mistake could possibly cost his friend’s life.
lyre caressed wonwoo’s hair as his head laid like deadweight on her lap, mouth dry against the dense air, chest heaving harsh pants. his eyes, heavily diluted, seemed to stare past her head at empty space and lyre may have lost all hope had it not been for the ghost of determination underlining the furrow of his brows. “wonwoo, i swear you’ll be okay, just hold on a little longer. mingyu’s getting the antidote now, he’s just a little slow. you know how clumsy he can get, just hang on, okay?”
but wonwoo had stopped giving replies ten minutes ago.
her hands, like her voice, trembled under the weight of a moist cloth, aiming to replace the steaming one on his head but fear diverted its path with every shake. doubt threatened to choke her of her words, leaving lyre curled up by the side of the abnormal rainforest, the world never viewed the same again. but she knew, if not marginally, that panic wouldn’t do the situation any more good.
jihoon seemed to have lost all sense of this concept however, as he continued to alternate between standing and pacing the grounds. “there has to be something i’ve forgotten, something that can help. think, jihoon, think!”
wonwoo hissed in pain then, and all three of his friends turned in fright. his arm had swelled to an abnormal size, pulsing liquid under his skin and shaded a dark purple.
“jihoon.” lyre called after the boy had settled, voice wavering. “wasn’t there something we learnt at school? something about the poison of []’s?”
“i know there was something, i know! but i can’t remember it!” jihoon let his words explode from his chest yet he heeds no apology. “damn it, what was it?” his eyes found mingyu across the field, still digging through the contents of their shared bags. “for fuck’s sake, leave the fucking bags, mingyu! they’re worthless right now.”
mingyu glanced up from his own world of regret and doubt, torment swimming in the pools of his eyes. the situation looked hopeless no matter what angle he portrayed it in. and, this had been his fault. his own carelessness, his naivety had prompted the death of his best friend. why hadn’t he listened to them all when they told him to step back from the pond? what had his mind been doing, telling him to continue his reckless behaviour just for the short lived praise he might have received? he had been pushed to the side when the lone [ ] had arrived at the scene, a creature so foreign and unknown that fear had short-circuited his actions.
he had stood frozen in the line of danger, horror encasing his body in suffocating crystals. it was wonwoo that had moved first, wonwoo who had considered all possible options which led him to sacrifice his own body for mingyu’s, wonwoo that had thrown himself at the creature, mingyu’s life and not his own being the only thing weighing on hid mind.
what had his last words been? the thought dawned on mingyu, like a nostalgic taste on the tip of his tongue. “don’t sulk, you look super dumb?” no, there was something else. something of potential importance, yet it mocked his grasp when he neared the truth. wonwoo’s whines of pain sounded as background noise at the point of his pondering, so familiar and yet gruelling at the pits of his stomach.
“something…” he mumbled, and lyre and jihoon looked up at the sound of his voice. “wonwoo said something before he couldn’t speak, what was it?”
“is this really the time?” jihoon snapped. “this isn’t the time.”
“jihoon, shut up. there was something he said before he became like this. i have a feeling he was trying to tell us how to deal with the situation.”
lyre turned her head from mingyu to the pale boy in her lap, a concentrated look evident in the crease between her eyebrows. mingyu caught the movement from the corner of his eye and clicked his finger at her. “lyre, you were the closest to him at the time. do you remember what it was?”
at the sudden spotlight, her mind blanked. there had been something previously, but the thought taunted and danced around the perimeter of her head as she tried, and failed, to chase it. “his arm, he mentioned something about his arm.” she finally blurted, his voice entering her head.
jihoon practically growled at the words. “well geez, that solves everything, doesn’t it? thanks for wasting our time, mingyu.” both mingyu and lyre took no offense to his harsh words; someone had to be the angry one in the current situation. lyre continued that train of thought, blocking out the noise of jihoon’s ranting, mingyu’s mumbling and wonwoo’s whimpers. she hoped that fate wouldn’t be so cruel as to give her this sliver of hope, thin and feeble in her hands, and that the solution to this dawning terror would be solved with the following revelation. “breaking something… he mentioned breaking something. what was it? a tree branch? true, the antidote of a beast should be found around the region so that its prey may survive from its poison. otherwise, the ecosystem would fail. but which tree? in this rainforest, what tree are we talking about. breaking apart… a bug? another small mammal? no, you wouldn’t break something with flesh, you would break something that’s hard. breaking… like snapping? breaking…”
jihoon continued to pace around you and wonwoo, head spinning in constant agony. there was fault coloured in the pale flush of his cheeks, why didn’t he know how to solve this issue? why didn’t he pull mingyu aside when the monster had first showed itself? and worse, why hadn’t he been the one to risk his life? why had he froze, selfish in the way that he valued his life over his dear friend’s, opting instead to leave someone else to do the harsh deed. why hadn’t he moved and pull wonwoo who laid by his feet out of harm’s way, instead standing still and letting the monster take a fierce chomp out of wonwoo’s arm? there was no doubt that if he had successfully performed the manoeuvre, wonwoo wouldn’t be in the position he was in now.
his feet crunched against a fallen stick as he paced and the noise triggered a thought in lyre’s head, her eyes widening in disbelief as it all clicked together.
“oh my god, his arm.” she murmured.
jihoon goes to quieten her, goes to tell her to stop obsessing over the idea of his arm when a tear slips from her eyes. the sheer terror from the thought evoked strong pulses of emotion to leak from lyre’s eyes like bleeding cyanide, but she pushed through regardless. how selfish would it be to only think of yourself whilst your friend suffered on the brink of death?
she looked jihoon in the eyes and repeated herself. “his arm. he wants us to snap his arm before the poison reaches his brain.”
lyre gave the boys no time to digest this new sliver of information, working instead to tear off a section of your shirt and wrapping it tightly where the poison had evidently stopped on his arm, black and purple, budging skin pressed against the material. in truth, lyre had no idea what she was doing, simply relying on memory and the many shows she’d watched to guide her movements as she tightened the knot.
the still silence broke when mingyu began to protest against the speculation, fearing the consequence of the action, but jihoon had moved to her side without further protest.
“guys, what are you doing? this isn’t right, we’ll just be killing him instead! guys, please stop, don’t think like that, there’ll be another way, please…” mingyu’s words failed to comprehend through his friends’ ears.
jihoon’s hands replaced lyra’s on the fabric and took over the job, eyes empty as he worked. only lyre saw the tremor in his hands as he tore more fabric and secured the separation of skin. his eyes meet the shivering girl’s over wonwoo’s body. “can you do this?”
her intake of breath is loud in the air shared between the two of you. clearly, jihoon had no idea what he was doing either, despite being the token medical friend. despite knowing that it was her idea, lyre shook her head softly.
“i’m going to use the axe that we kept to break his bones. can you help snap the rest?”
his words were gruesome, sickening to its core but wonwoo’s cries answered his question before she was able to, and she nodded seconds after. hesitance could cost wonwoo’s life.
mingyu stood over the two of them, passing the axe to jihoon with a grimace on his face. “god this is wrong, god this is so, so wrong.” but the transition is smooth as he lets the axe fall into his friend’s hands.
jihoon acknowledged the fact with an incoherent mumble before adjusting his grip on the tool. “mingyu, get me some water. we may not have disinfectants but if we don’t wash it, bacteria will kill him instead.”
the boy’s shadow left the trio. lyra  placed a hand over wonwoo’s eyes, hoping that he wouldn’t catch a glimpse of what was to come. was he even conscious in the process? what if she had been wrong to think that his last words demanded the loss of a limb. this was by no means a perfectly successful strategy, but as it was all they had, so regardless of any .lingering whips of doubt, she held onto it like a lifeline.
“ready?” jihoon murmured.
the both of them nodded their heads slightly; there was no way they would be completely ready. but lyra’s hands found wonwoo’s biceps and they stayed there, stayed there until the axe swung up into the air, metal glinting in the reflection of the sun before falling from the force of gravity and the aid of jihoon’s strength. stayed there until the axe fell and met his flesh with a sickening thud.
a thud.
a blunt thud.
wonwoo’s shrill screams pierced through the previously tranquil atmosphere of the rainforest. his back lurched forward but mingyu had some sense to hold down his body before the axe had fallen. though mingyu had held down his body, wonwoo didn’t halt thrashing around. his arms pulsed under lyra’s hands and his legs kicked out for an escape.
“oh god.” jihoon exclaimed in horror, white sheet evident against his face. his hands shook and the axe fell to the floor.
underneath where the blade of the axe had fallen, crimson paint blossomed leaving a trail of broken skin and something else twisted. his flesh peaked from under the flabs of his skin, untainted until it was, blood and pus swimming from his arm.
wonwoo couldn’t stop screaming.
it was clear that jihoon had failed to touch the bone.
wonwoo’s eyes felt wet under lyra’s hands and she let out a weak sob.
jihoon froze.
mingyu struggled under wonwoo’s flailing figure.
“give it here!” mingyu was quick to shout, snatching the axe from the ground without a response, forcing jihoon to quickly melt his terror from his skin and throw himself onto wonwoo’s body.
wonwoo cries were deafening, coarse now from use and the strength in his limbs had weakened, allowing jihoon to hold down his body with more ease despite the weight difference.
mingyu swung without any indication of doing so, hard and fast against the same spot jihoon had attacked. this time, he pulled away with a weak crack. he whimpered at the noise but raised it again.
“oh my god.” lyra whimpered. “oh my god, why did we use a blunt axe?”
but mingyu doesn’t stop. he continued to swing the axe, up and down, letting the momentum aid his strength, letting wonwoo’s protests to stop fuel his stamina. there is a squelch among the splinters, a cry amongst the shouts but mingyu never falters. he doesn’t falter when lyra moved her own hands to help settle the body, avid to stop his movements. he doesn’t stop when wonwoo’s voice crack, soundless screams like the cries of tormenting ghosts whispering regret and fault into his ears. he doesn’t stop when the boy’s eyes roll back into his head, revealing murky white. and he doesn’t stop when wonwoo’s body finally falls slack on the floor, limp and drained of all energy from the continued torture he had undergone.
he only stopped when the arm separates completely from the body, a tattered arm lying lifelessly away from its previously conjoined biceps, adorned with the colour of fresh blood and oozing pus. the wound pulsated with flowing blood.
“water!” mingyu cried. he turned to a shell-shocked jihoon whose eyes had watched without blinking. “get the water, goddamnit!”
perhaps it was his tear-stricken face, or his eyes that reflected a haunted expression due to the fact he axed away at his friend, but jihoon finally moved. he’d leapt to grab their source of water and begun to pour it without thought at the injury.
lyra gasped, taking in the oxygen that your body severely lacked. “stop, you’re wasting it! put the bottle closer!”
truthfully, half of the spent water and rushed and spilt onto the jungle floor, worthless to their current situation. the boy instantly followed after your words, edging nearer to the smell of rotting flesh and decay. the boy felt faint at the scent, more so at the sight. god, there was so much blood.
mingyu rebooted and finally began to move again. “tear off your shirt.”
the girl hesitated at his words.
“tear off your shirt!” he repeated with more intended force.
she was quick to break out of her trance and began to tear long stripes of cotton from her attire, mingyu doing the same. in a clumsy, almost child-like way, the three of you attempt to bandage the leaking wound as best as you can, but the white cloth turns scarlet red as soon as its placed. a hopeless sob escaped your throat. had you just murdered your friend?
the almost lifeless body laid like a corpse on the ground, pale in his complexion and unconscious. he would have been mistaken for dead had it not been for the shallow breaths the three of them heard occasionally. when the sun had fallen, the bleeding had eased. simply for a lack of supple, lyra wondered in half-hearted ponder. she felt lightheaded in the sense that thought ran away from her. she wished for water, but they had used the majority in hopes of washing wonwoo’s wound.
it seemed hopeless all over again.
“oh my. perhaps it’s finally my time to step in.”
lost in her own world of panic, lyra missed the words of a newcomer though it appeared jihoon hadn’t.
“who are you?” jihoon asked, successfully gaining lyra’s and mingyu’s attention away from the body though it lingers on their minds. hostility crept into the boy’s voice as he continued. “what do you want?”
the source of the unfamiliar voice stemmed from a figure hidden within the shadows of the towering trees. none of the three could determine the identity of the creature causing suspicion to raise.
the creature walked from beneath the tree’s shade, a smug-like expression adorning their face. they appeared human-like, sharing similar features with the humans lyra was familiar with. they had normal curly, black hair that tickled the tips of his ears, eyes that curved like crescents and a mouth in which appeared to be in a constant mocking state. they would have come off as human save for the sharp teeth that glimmered in his grin and the red, hungry look in his eyes. “my name is jeonghan.” he explained.
“are you… human?” mingyu wondered.
the thing chuckled as if he found something the boy said humorous. “that’s funny, as if i could possibly downgrade.”
jihoon positioned his boy to protectively angle his body against the strange creature. “what do you want from us?”
jeonghan tilted his head. “why, what does it look like i’m doing?”
“it looks like you’re being a nuisance.” he answered. grabbing at the axe, he placed it between the four of you and the red eyed beast. wonwoo’s blood dripped from the edge of the blade to which jeonghan raised his eyebrows at. “stay back.” but jihoon’s voice betrayed his attitude and cracked under the pressure.
“put the axe down, jihoon.” jeonghan warned, taking a step forward. despite his firm voice, his lips wavered as if to conceal a smile.
“how do you know my name?” the boy replied instead of complying. despite jeonghan stepping closer, jihoon’s threats made no appearance. he had entered the abyss in hopes to solve the lifelong mystery of where it came from, not to fight a mystical creature. nothing in his life had trained him for this
“you two were screaming it so much it was hard to miss. it would be, rather, more shocking if i hadn’t heard it.” jeonghan said, gesturing to lyra and mingyu. “you two should really keep it down, by the way, or you’ll wake stronger beasts than the one you encountered before, you know, the one that bit your friend? and then even i wouldn’t be able to save you from them.” he hesitated and you flinched from his words. “well, maybe i could.”
mingyu took the silence that followed after as an opportunity to speak. “this sounds like you’re here to help us?”
jeonghan shrugged and mingyu noticed that he had been steadily closing the gap between him and the group but he let the thought slide. he were tired, oh so tired from the fear of losing his friend, the adrenaline from contributing to said friend’s loss of a limb and now this, a potential threat. perhaps death called, though it couldn’t be so bad if it promised a peaceful rest.
“i would simply be delighted to aid you in your…” he glanced around jihoon’s guarding figure to wonwoo’s body. “successful attempt to save your friend.” he finally spoke, words coming out rather slowly. “however, my buddy jihoon here, seems to be opposed against my gracious decision. perhaps you want wonwoo to die, jihoon buddy ol’ pal?”
jihoon looked to be physically in pain, teeth grinding upon each other. his mouth opened to say more but mingyu placed a firm hand on his arm. “we’ll accept.” mingyu said. “please save our friend.” the boy glanced at jihoon and shook his head desperately. “wonwoo doesn’t have time for us to argue.” he offered as explanation and when jihoon sighted wonwoo, he found himself agreeing.
“fine. please help us, jeonghan.” he muttered, hands still tightening on the handle of the axe though he lets his arm drop.
the creature clapped his hands in excitement. “excellent! i knew you would come around, jihoon.”
lyra cut into the conversation before jihoon could take the bait and bite back. “how are you going to save him? what are you going to do?”
the desperateness must have coloured her tone for jeonghan turned to face her. his eyes were haunting when they settled on hers for the first time, seemingly delving deep into her soul and prying deep into her memories. they left no surface unturned, a hurricane in his wake, the smile engraved into the crevices of her mind as he spoke once more. “come back with me and i’ll show you.”
lyra watched as jeonghan turned from her, colour returning into her sight as his figure began to disappear against the backdrop of the rainforest. she heard only her faint breaths and the whistle of perching birds, heads tilted in curiosity as they watched the event that occurred in the world beneath them. her eyes find mingyu’s which have been hardened beyond recognition and the two of you knew that the moment would forever be etched into the wrinkles of their brains. if they were to ever survive this, it would only mean elongated suffering.
there were tears in lyra’s eyes at the prospect of failing their initial endeveurs to explore the hidden depths of the unknown phenomenon. hadn’t they only wanted to explore what the abyss had offer? hadn’t they simply wanted the thrill of adventuring with your childhood friends, seeking out a journey that would be inked in history? and now the reality of the world had sunken into their bones like cement.
the four of them had barely descended past the fifth layer, edging on the boundaries and the concept of returning knocked on your mind like an unwanted friend.
jihoon stood, rustling the wind at the sudden disturbance. he swung wonwoo’s only arm over his shoulder and wordlessly trekked after jeonghan whose back was almost consumed by the forest’s shadows. there was only one option and jihoon knew this, knew this before the rest of his friends did.
mingyu followed after jihoon, zipping up his backpack and tossing it over his shoulder. he offered lyra a hand as he passed her on the floor, which she accepted. an unspoken nod is bounced back between the two, something like determination and acceptance in the gesture.
whatever was in their path of destiny had to be overcome no matter its challenge, for the four of them had descended so far to die only at its fifth layer.

After committing a crime so cruel that even an execution won't do, Wonwoo finds himself as a Goblin, searching for the one soul destined to take his sword out of him. But throughout his long, long lifetime, he finds himself meeting that soul, Mingyu,  again and again until Mingyu reaches the lifetime in which he has to take Wonwoo's sword out.

Note: Goblins are immortal and have the ability to travel to different places by opening doors (open the door to your bedroom but end up in another place) ! Just some info so you’re not comfused if you haven’t watched the drama :-)
Hello! This is the second fanfic I’m writing on here! I posted this on Asianfanfics.com but I thought I’d put it on here too :-) Also! This fic is HEAVILY inspired by the popular K-drama, goblin! But I changed a lot of things and the plot is completely different, its just a few things that I chose to keep. Regardless, this fic was inspired by Goblin so if you like this fic, you should go watch it!
They say that humans have four lives, and that afterwards, the soul finally gets to go to a higher place. They say that those who’ve killed themselves become grim reapers, and that those who commit heinous acts will be cursed as immortal until they find their brides. They say all of that, but who really believes it?
--
Wonwoo didn’t mean to slaughter a whole village. He didn’t know what he was doing, he just knew that whatever the king wants, the king gets. It didn’t hit him that he and the group of soldiers that he led single handedly took the lives of countless individuals until he found himself kneeling in front of the king with his hands bound to his back and an executioner fastening a blindfold to his eyes, preparing him for what’s to come. His whole body shuddered as beads of sweat dripped down his face. He wasn't sure if it was out of fear or out of heat. Maybe both. His execution was scheduled for the night, so there were rings of fire circling him, illuminating what was to come.
He realized in what was supposed to be his final moments that he didn’t do what the king wanted. He and his soldiers were only supposed to kidnap the king, but the selfish desire deep within him that he didn’t know existed caused him to kill a village.
He uttered one final apology, finding that there were no tears left in him as he prepared himself for his death.
The sword piercing his body felt like nothing to him. Even when he felt himself choke up blood and his body begin to burn in pain, he felt nothing but guilt. He was a monster and deserved this. He deserved to die the death of a public execution. He deserved to die due to the war that was to ensue due to his actions. He didn’t deserve to open his eyes ever again.
So when they did open, he was confused.
He scanned the barren fields around him, and was greeted with an old man who appeared beside him in an instant.
“How am I here? How...Why am I here?” He asked quietly, afraid that somebody from the town might somehow hear him in the vacant fields. He looked down at his stomach and saw the sword that stabbed him days prior. But it was different now. It was transparent and glowed, but if he chose not to focus on it, he wouldn’t see it. He tried to touch it, but his hand went right through it. He gave the man a questioning look.
The old man sighed deeply as he scanned the young man before him.
“Have you ever heard of a Goblin?”
--
The first time he met Mingyu was in a small town in England. He decided to leave Korea as a whole and move somewhere he’d never be found, and decided that England would be a good start.
Besides, he had an eternity to learn English.
Mingyu, who’s name at the time was Mark, worked at a local bakery in their rural town away from the Royal Palace. Royalty didn’t seem to matter to their quaint way of living. Wonwoo was the only foreigner in the town, and was often questioned about his whereabouts and how he traveled from the orient to here. He couldn’t lie and say that he teleported, because they’d just try to burn him for witchcraft, so he lied and said that he travelled from China to import tea.
They didn’t need to know that he was Korean, anyways, because to them it was all the same.
Mark was one of the only people who didn’t question him for not being European, and their friendship soon grew.
Wonwoo found it easy to suppress certain feelings throughout his life, from being in training, to being in battle, to then having to go into hiding.
It was easy to suppress these feelings when he couldn’t relax and bask in them, but sitting here with Mark made his heart beat just a little faster than he would have liked.
Mark grew up strictly catholic and made no advances towards Wonwoo, but the lingering stares and the jolts of electricity that ran through their bodies as they brushed their fingertips over tea was enough to suffice.
As Mark grew older, he began to question Wonwoo’s age. They’d been friends for ten years, and Mark was now balding and developing wrinkles, yet Wonwoo kept his pristine complexion and didn’t seem to age at all.
Wonwoo always brushed him off with a comment along the lines of “Asians don’t age”, but Mark wasn’t stupid.
Mark knew deep down that there was something supernatural about his friend, but he didn’t push on it. Even when he laid on his deathbed in their shared apartment, fifty years later and completely bald, wrinkled, weak and brittle, he didn’t question Wonwoo’s youth.
Wonwoo pressed a kiss to his forehead as he said goodbye to his friend, and prayed that it wasn’t Marks last life.
That was the first time he felt the pain of a Goblin. He had initially felt grateful to whomever the old man had been before, but now all he felt was sorrows and regret. He thought that his execution was enough, but he knew that he deserved this.
--
The second time he met Mingyu was 100 years later in New York, United States.
Shortly after Mark's death, Wonwoo decided to leave Europe to forget about him, hence finding himself in the busy streets of New York. He initially didn’t like the big city, but he felt like the growing city was a good way to forget about his past “lover”.
He even got an education. He was immune to diseases and wanted to help people, so he became an ER doctor to save lives.
This was his way of making up for his past. For every person he killed, he would save ten people.
With his new task and busy work days, he soon was able to forget about Mark.
That was until a fateful day in the hospital, where Michael, a respiratory therapist from the other hospital along with his assistant, Siyeon, came in to treat an ill patient.
Wonwoo wasn’t assigned to the patient, but checked in during his break to see if he could be of any assistance. He didn’t look at Michael when first entering the room, not out of rudeness but out of simple concern for the patient. However after doing a quick rundown of whatever procedure needed to be done, he turned to Michael to ask if he needed help.
But Wonwoo didn’t hear a word Michael said, because all he could feel is a rush of electricity pulsing through his veins and tingling in his feet as he looked into Michael's eyes.
Siyeon politely nudged Wonwoo after a short period of time, asking if he was okay. She explained that he’d been staring at Michael for a few seconds without saying anything.
Wonwoo nodded his head, clarifying to the duo that he had a long shift and that he just needed some fresh air.
He spent his lunch break outside, barely touching his sandwich as his mind raced with the previous events.
He’s alive
But his thoughts were cut short quickly as Siyeon, the assistant, called out to him as she jogged over, her lunch bag clutched in her fists.
“I’m going to be blunt with you, Dr. Jeon.” She started, staring deep into his eyes. “Are you a Goblin?”
Wonwoo’s eyes widened as his mouth hung open.
He blinked a few times at her, mumbling a few times about why she’d ask that, before she interrupted again.
“I’m a grim reaper.” She stated, sitting down on the bench next to him. “And I think you’re a goblin because I can’t get a read on you. I don’t know when you’ll die, so I’m assuming that you’re a Goblin, right?"
Wonwoo scanned his surroundings, deciding that they were secluded enough to talk in public.
“If I wasn’t a Goblin, then what would I be?” He questioned.
He didn’t understand why she was confused about what he was. If she couldn’t get a read on him, wouldn’t that make it perfectly clear?
“You could also be a lost soul. You know, somebody who is supposed to die, but doesn’t?” She explained, leaning back in her seat comfortably, eyeing Wonwoo as he processed his new information.
“Oh…” He trailed off. “Well, you were correct, I’m a goblin. I didn’t know lost souls existed.” He said.
“Really?” She asked, taken aback. “But a lost soul is gonna be the person to save you.” She grinned at his confusion, explaining further. “You’ll save a person one day, whether that be
through your job here at the hospital or through your powers as a goblin. But they’ll then develop supernatural abilities that will allow them to see your sword.” She pointed to the protruding sword from his torso, cocking her head to the side.
Wonwoo’s eyes went directly to his torso, where the transparent sword glowed.
“They’ll be able to pull out your sword and then you’ll be able to die. So, save as many lives as you can.” Siyeon patted Wonwoo’s shoulder as she got up, getting ready to go back to her shift.
“But you have plenty of time. I know you remember Michael from his past life. He will be the one to pull your sword out, but not in this lifetime.”
He never tried to see Michael again after that, but he had faith that he’d meet Michael’s soul again.
--
The third time he met Mingyu was 100 years later in Quebec City, Canada.
After “getting another job offer” in Canada, Wonwoo studied up on French and moved to Quebec. He decided to take a break from being a doctor and focused on music. He decided that saving lives isn’t just medical, and that music can help and heal people just as much as medicine. The pay was significantly lower than he was used to, but his savings kept him afloat as he performed gigs at local pubs and coffee shops.
Technology was growing, so he was able to record a CD with his songs. He was amazed at what humans were able to do, and was almost thankful to have been able to live to see the change in the world.
Wonwoo finished up his last song for the night at the coffee house he’d been performing at, and graciously accepted the applause. He spent the rest of the night in a local pub with a few friends, one being Siyeon, as they drank the night away.
Siyeon quit her job as a medical assistant due to her deaths rising up and getting in the way of her work.
Her grim reaper priorities were far more important than her other jobs.
She found an interest in French music and bought a vinyl with a familiar name to the title, and eventually she made her way up to Quebec to annoy Wonwoo.
But he wasn’t annoyed by her at all.
She kept him company, and it was nice to know that when their friend group dies, she’ll still be there to mourn with him.
The group drank until they could barely walk, stumbling up to Wonwoo’s fancy apartment.
His friends often asked how he managed to afford the place, but he brushed them off and claimed that it was inheritance.
However Wonwoo’s apartment was a few floors up, and living in Old Quebec, there were no elevators available, so the group had to force themselves up the stairs.
What was normally an easy, but tiring, walk soon became a marathon for Wonwoo.
He wasn’t usually this clumsy, but after missing a step, he found himself falling flat onto his face.
“Are you alright?” A worried voice asked.
Wonwoo brushed it off as one of his friends, holding his hand out for one to take.
But the jolt of electricity that was brought to his fingertips sobered Wonwoo up completely.
He stood up, wiping away at any dust that might’ve been left on him, before looking up at the man before him.
“Hi..” The man started “Are you alright? I noticed you fall, and…” He trailed off.
“I’m great.” Wonwoo said, feeling heat rise to his cheeks as he stared deeper into the eyes of the man before him.
“Oh!” The man exclaimed awkwardly, pointing to the door adjacent Wonwoo’s.” I’m Mattheu, your new neighbor.”
Wonwoo grinned, reaching out to shake Mattheus' hand again, feeling himself melt into his touch.
Siyeon eyed the two of them, raising an eyebrow as the duo made heart eyes for each other.
She ushered the rest of their friend group out of the apartment building, promising a place to sleep in her apartment a few stories down.
It was clear as day to Siyeon that Wonwoo’s relationship to Mattheu was going to be a lot different than the ones he’d had with Mattheu’s soul before. In the past, they could never be together in public, however in the 20th century city of Quebec, the duo can live the way they want.
Wonwoo had never experienced happiness like what he experienced with Mattheu. Their good morning kisses, their homemade dinners, and the love they had for each other made Wonwoo’s heart swarm with warmth and joy.
Until Mattheu began to get sick.
It was little things at first, but Wonwoo knew after a few weeks what was happening.
Mattheu had told Wonwoo about his past lovers, and how there were many nights that went unprotected, but he truly thought that he wouldn’t be one of them.
One to get AIDs, that is.
Wonwoo knew he was safe from it, but that just made him feel worse. His lover would have to die, and he couldn’t even die with him.
Mattheu hung in there for a little while, trying his best to keep his routine but becoming weaker and weaker as time went on, until one day, Mattheu didn’t hum in contentment as Wonwoo smothered him in his good morning kisses, didn’t sigh deeply as he felt the duvet being pulled from him, and didn’t open his eyes to see the love and adoration that Wonwoo held in his own.
Siyeon tried to help him, holding him as he cried and tucking him into bed every night, but he couldn’t stay anymore. He couldn’t stay in this apartment, in this city, in this country anymore. It was time for a change.
--
The fourth time he met Mingyu was 80 years later in Seoul, South Korea.
He needed to go home after Mattheu passed.
He put off going to the country that hated him in fear that he’d be ridiculed and exempt from ever stepping foot on Korean soil, except...it didn’t hate him.
Because what he did centuries ago didn’t even make it to the textbooks, and as it turns out, his actions never caused a war. The other villages grew defensive once they heard about the attacked village, however after hearing about Wonwoo’s death, they decided to accept it and move on.
So he felt comfortable again in South Korea.
He went back to being a doctor after moving back, and prayed to whomever may be listening that French music never makes its way over to South Korea, because he grew a bit of a following and didn’t want to be known as the “Hot, singing doctor who knows French”.
Siyeon also followed Wonwoo, deciding that she, too, would like to go home.
Siyeon never really knew what she did to make her commit suicide, so she wanted to see if being in Korea would trigger something in her.
Wonwoo ran a hand through his hair as he looked down at his clipboard of things to do, scribbling down a few notes here and there as he enjoyed the calm morning environment.
But that was quickly replaced by chaos as a new nurses rushed in a patient who’d seemingly been hit by a car.
He quickly rushed over to her bed and examined her current state.
Her arm was nearly dislocated, her chest seemed to have taken a big blow with the blood ushering through a wound, and her face was completely scratched at.
He told the nurses to grab some anesthetics as he began to prep her for emergency surgery, however she began to plead weakly as he vocalized his plans.
“I'm pregnant” she repeated to him through labored breaths. “Be careful and save my baby”
Wonwoo’s mind raced as he thought of what to do.
He knew that if he played it safe, she’d be able to make it, but a fetus so small that it was barely visible to the outside world wouldn’t.
And he couldn’t let his patient down.
He scanned the room again to ensure that nobody had their eyes on him before he told his patient to close her eyes.
He put his hand over her stomach and used his powers to heal her. Not completely, but just enough to ensure that whatever may be growing inside of her does so with no problems.
He rarely used his powers to heal others, opting to stick to his medial knowledge. But he swore to himself that if he could save somebody, he'd do it no matter what.
The nurses rushed in with needles and other equipment seconds after he finished, and he thanked whomever may be up there that they didn’t see what he had done.
He let another doctor take control of the patient's surgery, and visited her only after she was fully healed and was able to sit upright.
He hoped that she would have been too out of it to have noticed what he’d done to her stomach, but once the nurses that took care of her left for their other patients, she tapped on her stomach and smiled.
“My eyes were closed, but the glowing that came from your hand was too bright to not notice.” She smiled softly. “I won’t tell anyone, but I just wanted to say...thank you.”
Wonwoo smiled back at her, wishing her the best of luck on her pregnancy and journey throughout motherhood.
He turned to leave the room before glancing back at her, a question popping into his head.
“Do you have names picked out?”
His patient pondered for a moment, rubbing her stomach as she thought.
“If it's a girl, I’d name her Eunwoo.”
Wonwoo grinned. He liked the name a lot and complimented her on it.
The patient took another moment to think, cocking her head to the side as she decided.
“And if it’s a boy, I think I’ll name him Mingyu.”
--
The fifth and time he met Mingyu was 20 years later in Seoul, South Korea.
Wonwoo made his way to the library, enjoying his first few days of his break from working.
He again made the decision to take a break from being a doctor, deciding that he wanted to learn how to write instead.
He thought about his life and how big of a hit it would be to write a book on it.
So that’s what he decided to do.
He sat down in his usual spot as he began his writing process: make a bullet point list of the progression of events, then write for an hour, and then scroll on his phone.
The new iPhone came out, and he was over the moon with what he could do with it.
Siyeon called him out for still having a flip phone in 2020, so he finally upgraded to an iPhone.
He loved all of the social media apps, but he found himself drawn to twitter the most.
He could tweet out anything he wanted and it would be there forever. Amazing.
He leaned back in his chair as he scrolled, giggling to himself as he read the tweets from a few of his favorite artists. He felt like a little kid, but it made him happy.
It almost made him miss the way the person across from him stared at him.
Or rather, his torso.
Wonwoo glanced up from his phone and raised an eyebrow to the person across from him.
And then he felt a familiar tingle again.
But this time, the tingle came from his torso as he saw the sword appear before him again, glowing brighter than ever before.
The man across from him got up and made his way over, giving Wontoo a toothy grin as he pointed to the sword.
“So...I see you have a sword in you.”
Wonwoo’s mouth went dry and his hands began to clam.
Is this it? He thought to himself. Am I gonna finally die today?
“Uh…” The man continued “I’m Mingyu, your "Bride", by the way. I’m assuming you’re the Goblin I was destined to save?”
Wonwoo nodded his head weakly, his arms trembling as he reached out to shake Mingyu's hand.
“We don’t have to do this now, you know.” Mingyu reassured, patting Wonwoo’s back in an attempt to calm him down.
But they did. Once you meet your bride, you need to perform the execution within the next few hours. Otherwise, the Goblins bride could be in danger.
Wonwoo melted in Mingyu's touch as a deep sigh left his lips.
He looked up at Mingyu after some time to introduce himself as well as to tell him his story.
He told Mingyu about what he did to become a goblin, about all of the places he’d lived, and about the times that he met Mingyu’s soul. He told Mingyu about his plans to write a book about his experiences, about the long, long life he lived. He told Mingyu that he almost wishes that he could live forever at this point. Almost. But he's ready to leave this world, now.
Mingyu smiled at him, rubbing hands reassuringly.
“Humans have four lives, right?” Mingyu asked, earning a nod from Wonwoo. “So after this life, I’ll go to...wherever souls go, right?” Wonwoo nodded again.
“So we will be together then, Wonwoo. Mark, Michael, Mattheu, and I. We will be there with you when I’m done living this life.”
The thought of being reunited with Mingyu’s soul for eternity brought tears to Wonwoo’s eyes as he began to sob quietly.
Mingyu stayed with him until Wonwoo calmed down, picking up his phone to call Siyeon, who quickly rushed over to meet the duo.
They said their tearful goodbyes, and Siyeon promised that she only had a few lives left to take before her duty as a Grim Reaper was over. Afterwards, she’d join him up there and keep him company as he waited for Mingyu’s soul to finish living it’s last life.
Wonwoo and Mingyu held hands as they made their way to a barren field on the outskirts of Seoul.
Wonwoo thought it would be best to do it here, as there would be nobody around to watch him disintegrate into thin air.
Memories of waking up in a similar field, complete confusion and the start of his new life washed over Wonwoo has he took in his final moments.
Mingyu, despite only meeting Wonwoo for the first time today, felt a deep sense of sorrow as Wonwoo stopped in his tracks, turning to face Mingyu with a soft smile.
Wonwoo felt content with his surroundings, he felt content with Mingyu beside him, and he felt relieved to finally be done with living.
Wonwoo took Mingyu’s reluctant hands and placed it onto the sword, squeezing it slightly as a signal that he was ready.
“Wonwoo…” Mingyu started, tears forming in his eyes.
“Hmm?” Wonwoo asked, looking up at him.
“I’ll see you again before you know it, alright?”
Wonwoo nodded, smiling softly as he felt the sword finally leave his body.
Then he felt himself float.
Then he felt nothing.
Jeon Wonwoo was gone from this Earth, but he was watching from above.
--
The last time he met Mingyu was in his heaven.
Wonwoo felt someone pepper his face with kisses as he stirred awake.
He opened his eyes slightly to adjust to the light that cascaded through the blinds by the window.
He knew that window.
He rubbed his eyes before opening them again, reevaluating the room.
This was his apartment in Quebec.
The kisses plastered to his face stopped momentarily as a pair of hands grasped at his cheeks, turning his face to the side.
There he saw Mingyu, grinning at him as he pulled Wonwoo into a kiss.
Wonwoo melted in his touch, feeling slightly delirious as he held onto Mingyu’s hand.
“M-Mingyu...You’re here?”
Mingyu nodded, pushing a few strands of hair from Wonwoo’s forehead before pressing a kiss to it.
“I’m here. Do you know why we are here?” Mingyu asked.
Wonwoo shook his head, scanning the room again.
“It’s our heaven, Woo.” Mingyu said.
“I..I thought I was in heaven…” Wonwoo trailed off.
Prior to here, he’d been with Siyeon as they wandered around with their friends.
He was happy there.
But being here with Mingyu, that was indescribable.
“You were in your heaven, but now you’re in our heaven. This is where we live now. Together.”
Together
Hey guys! If you liked that, I also have a few fics on Asianfanfics.com! I might post a few on here depending on how well this does lol. Thank you for reading!

NIGHT SHIFT
(Hoshi Fanfic)
Her lids were getting heavier, but her gaze was going back and forth to the patient that she was supposedly looking after. It's not that she didn't want to do this job, it's just that the silence bores her.
Since they have fewer clients, the hospital had to lay off some employees, and luckily (unluckily) she was chosen to stay. But the downside is that she had to be on her own during night shifts.
She was actually an introvert, but right now she craves for an interesting conversation. One she wouldn't get from a confused, aphasic patient. But she didn't want to complain, afterall, she was there to work.
But then she just had to finish everything by 2am unintentionally, which left her with 6 hours time to kill, since the patient was stable.
She searched for her friends who might be awake at this hour, but there was none (obviously). Feeling daring, she tried to search for an app where she could chat someone. She really just wanted to talk to anyone, even though she knew what mostly happens in random chats, but of course she wouldn't cross that line.
First, she had to pick the gender she's interested in, then she had to click her age. Certainly, this is some dating modus that she's not looking for, but then again, she was bored. She picked Watashi wa Hana as her nickname, just because.
Most private chats would start with the usual "Hi" and "Hello", then random people with weird nicknames, would ask what country she's from. She contemplated for a bit whether to be honest, but she realized that lying would kinda be stupid.
To filter the chatboxes that kept appearing, she started the conversation with, "I'm kinda curious, why did you join this app?" As predicted, most would be so straight forward and would ask if she could send pics or do some sexy stuffs. Those private chats would automatically be deleted, she's not here for this.
TigerEyes would like to chat with you. She read. Unlike the others, he didn't start with the usual intro.
TigerEyes: r u Japanese?
WatashiWaHana: No, just got it from the lyrics of my favorite song
TigerEyes: Which is?
She immediately got that spark igniting within her, the same she got whenever she speaks to someone about her favorite music or other interests. She felt the need to promote but realized that she needed to tone it down.
WatashiWaHana: Some Japanese song. I think the title is Fallin' Flower. Sounds so catchy.
TigerEyes: Maybe I'll check it out. I'm boooooooored
That caught her attention, maybe he's just like her.
WatashiwaHana: Me too. Why did you join this app? I'm curious
TigerEyes: Hmm to have fun ofc. (Another predictable answer, she thought) Why, do you have anything else in mind?
Why does that sound so. . .provocative. Or was it just her imaginations?
WatashiwaHana:I like conversations, I just wanted someone to talk to. I'm bored
TigerEyes: okaaay, let's start a conversation then. What are your interests?
Hmmm nice, at least someone with sense, she said to herself. Maybe he'd be worth talking to.
WatashiwaHana: I like travelling, dancing, music. How 'bout u?
TigerEyes: I like dancing too, I sometimes do choreographies 😉
WH: That's impressive, you must be so creative.
TigerEyes: Yes I am, I could be sooo creative, I could fulfill your fantasies.
That was disappointing. She huffed.
She tapped her phone, while deciding whether to reply or not. It was the longest convo she had here so far, it seems like a waste to delete this chatbox.
TigerEyes: What are your fantasies?
She decided to be playful.
WH: I have lots of fantasies. In what exactly?
TigerEyes: Hmmm..What do you expect from this conversation?
He seems like a much more deeper person than she expected, but she get it that he's trying to be like everyone else who uses this app.
WH: I really just wanted to converse with someone, but I get what most people wanted to gain from this.
Most people? That didn't sound right for him, he didn't like to be like everyone else. But he gets why she thinks that way. He wanted to blame it to this stupid app, while denying his true intentions from awhile ago.
WH: It's cliche, really
TigerEyes: Fun
WH: Am I boring you already? (She laughed nervously, it's just how introverts are, she expected this already) Anyways nice chatting with you
She almost turned off her phone, when
TigerEyes: Wait. Let's make this interesting then
WH: Depends on your idea of interesting
TigerEyes: Oh no, depends on yours. What do you want? You told me you want  conversations. So let's do that 😁
WH: Do you have any acquaintances here?
TE: I'm actually new here. Honestly I had a girlfriend but we broke up. I kinda miss her especially when I needed a company
WH: Oh that sucks. Do you want to tell me about it? They say that talking 'bout it helps you move on
TE:********
WH: You don't want to? That's okay.
She's starting to like this convo. Opening up is something that truly starts real conversations, and you rarely get that from strangers especially on online dating chat apps.
TE: How about you? Do you have some fantasies? How he should be? How he should treat you?
WH: I actually don't have anyone. Maybe that's why I donloaded this app 'coz I want someone to talk to. Maybe that's my fantasy. Chilling at the house with someone special, without fearing of not being able to go home.
TE: Don't regret. I still believe that best things are waiting for us. I'm willing to listen, just be yourself and tell me things. Like...umm ...what's your ideal date? If ever you meet that someone
WH: I want something cozy. Like lots of cuddles, coffee, movies and conversations, what's yours?
TE: I would like to take her to a romantic dinner date. Enjoy a sip of wine. Dance while holding her close and looking into her eyes.
WH: Sounds romantic. Kinda reminds me of romcom movies
TE: Thanks for the compliment.
WH: Have you done that with someone?
He didn't want to remember but it's too hard to forget.
TE: Yes. I did it with her before. I like taking her on surprised trips. She likes natural and serene places.
WH: Give me a recommendation where to go then
TE: Why? I thought you're single 😂
WH: Can't I go there alone? I told you I like travelling.
TE: Maybe you'd like to travel with me then. I could be your tour guide.
WH: Hmmmmm
TE: What? I don't bite! I have tiger eyes, but believe me I'm actually a hamster at heart
That made her chuckle. This guy seems so cute. It made her wonder why his ex- girlfriend broke up with him. He seems nice.
WH: I'd like that.
Now she didn't see that coming. Never had she ever thought that being bored during night shift would lead to meeting someone. Now she just have to wait 'til the pandemic is over to finally have that trip with her newfound friend.
