I want to make a longer post about this someday but: I think Arya's TWOW arc is going to include her coming to terms with her identity as a Lady. This has been an ongoing conflict with her since her first chapter and I think her flowering in winds is going to mark a turning point. The theory of her having an apprenticeship with the courtesans holds a lot of weight and the idea of Arya going through puberty among a group of unconventional women she's fostered a positive relationship with is just too perfect. It would really have an impact on Arya reconciling her personal idea of what a Lady should be. There's also a lot that she could learn from them in terms of courtesies, communication, appearances, body-language, etc. that would elevate her current skill-set and ways her relationship with them could push the plot.

Not to mention she will undoubtedly reclaim her identity as Arya Stark, and her being a Lady is inseparable from that. Arya Stark is a Lady Stark and being a Lady is a social position, not a measure of how well someone preforms feminine tasks. She shouldn't have to relinquish her position because she doesn't fit patriarchal standards. That's not to say that she's ever going to be the perfect example of a traditional Lady but what I think will happen is that she becomes capable of playing the part. She plays several identities throughout the series but she's always been Arya underneath, so I think it's appropriate that she learns to adopt a "persona" that's part of her. Her remembering Ned putting on his "Lord's face" (+ the various examples of other characters being separate from their ruling persona) makes me think that Arya will be donning her "Lady's face" when she makes a return to Westeros.

how long did shiklah and Wade know each other before getting married? was it like, a drunk Vegas proposal? I'm not caught up on shiklah and it disappoints me that I don't know a lot about her.

in 616 canon it was kind of a rush-job – i'm not entirely sure about timescale - it's one of those adventure stories where a whole lot of action happens on a short timescale, but who knows, it could've spanned a few days or a few weeks before wade put a ring on it. and while they did like each other a whole lot, and were at it like rabbits -

the actual marriage was more of a tactical move to thwart dracula (long story)

i'd recommend reading dracula's gauntlet if you want the whole canon meetcute - it's very cute and fun.

While I of course don't advocate for child marriage- ie marriage below age 18, and really I think 20+ is wiser -the whole "date around or you're Wasting Your Youth!!!" narrative pisses me off, like I said. I grew up with that shoved down my throat to the point where I believed my own desires to just meet the right girl and stay with her forever were just youthful romanticism; that I'd "mature" and want to date more people instead of wanting to settle down. (And for some people that is the trajectory! And that's fine! Just...not everyone.)

Yeah, someone might regret a young marriage. But they might regret ANY marriage- that's just a risk you take when you get married. Trusting people to know their own minds in relationships that present no actual red flags is important, even for teenagers. Teaching young people not to trust their own (harmless) emotions and desires for their lives because it doesn't match what you'd have them do seems horribly backwards to me. It's a dangerous precedent to set for them.

When I was 16, I thought I'd be perfectly happy if I married a girl I met at that age- when we were older, of course. Now I'm 30, and guess what? I still think that. I would have been satisfied. Hell, I wish that had happened. It's not right for everybody, but it would have been right for me.

The Rolling in the Graves is the only time my epically ace self has ever UNDERSTOOD a cheating plot line (let alone rooted for the characters involved). Most of the time cheating plots are just written like the characters losing The Battle of the Horny and I’m just over here, like, “you could just???? not???? have sex with them???? It’s not that hard??” But with Lucien and Nesta there’s so much connection and understanding and companionship (and and and) between them first before anything remotely sexy (which is, ironically, very sexy of them.) I'm also obsessed with how you put this because very consciously, Rolling in the Graves is a story about losing the Battle of Real True Intimacy, but they are both CRUCIALLY pretending it's a horny battle. Like, Nesta putting on her cool birthday dress? That ONLY Lucien will see? The entire magical derangement happening sidelong to that fact, only for Nesta to CHOOSE to touch him? To help? Soooo sexy and so not actually about sex.

(the biggest horny battle is that Lucien just. doesn't even let himself LOOK at Nesta in public, a tactic that works exactly until he is in a room with both her and his older brother)

The infidelity aspect is very interesting because they don't...actually agree on that?

We have Nesta- grieving, lonely, furious furious furious Nesta- who is dragging around the fact that she did give in, at one point. We the readers, and Lucien, can both see to a certain extent that the fact that she can't say no precludes ANY KIND OF CONSENT, but that is extremely hard for Nesta herself to hold onto, at least in the beginning.

(Nesta is having these thoughts like. Months and months before they ever touch)

Lucien has this whole thing running around in his head twofold- because the Nessian dynamic freaks him the fuck out. And also, on another level, he's like, all the time, like a reminder, because he NEEDS THE REMINDER to like, rein himself in, she's mARRIED. MARRIED.

This could get her (and himself but that's distantly secondary) hurt. Killed.
