gotham is good friends with death.

they meet each other more often than not; death stays the night sometimes.

gotham trusts death. gotham trusts death more than anything, because death loves her children.

when her children die, gotham watches as their souls rise from their bodies. they are drawn to her, and she cups the cold spirits in her calloused palms. with great grief and love, gotham raises them up and passes them to death. he takes the souls, and gently cradles them to his bones.

the chill of the souls mix with his own, and death receives their memories. death now understands them. death now loves these souls.

(you must understand, death does not hate life. he in fact, loves her. life is long and beautiful, and death is very patient. he is content to watch as souls blossom in life's palms before being gently passed onto his own. death knows life is beautiful, and he's honored to be able to feel life in each soul he takes.)

death does not blame gotham for his visits. he enjoys her company, and he loves her children. they carry so many stories with them, and they bring much joy to an ancient like him. gotham is grateful her children are in such loving hands.

The music which plays during Will’s fantasy in which he imagines a world in which he kills Jack in preparation to run away with Hannibal is Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46: II. The Death of Ase, composed by Edvard Grieg. Peer Gynt is a five-act verse play by Henrik Ibsen, published in Norwegian in 1867 and produced in 1876.

It tells the story of Peer Gynt, a charming but lazy and arrogant peasant youth who leaves home to seek his fortune. Confident of success, he has one disastrous adventure after another. In one, he attends the wedding of a wealthy young woman he himself might have married. There he meets Solveig, who falls in love with him. He impulsively abducts the bride from her wedding celebration and subsequently abandons her. He then embarks on a series of fantastic voyages around the world, finding wealth and fame but never happiness. (long overdue edit of this post; i still stand by a majority of what i said about james and his characterization within his story but i think i could've worded it a lot better now that i'm fully antiquated with him/his whole deal and i've had a year to think about it.)

james is simultaneously neither good nor bad in full, and he's everywhere in between. his earnest attempts at kindness and care juxtaposed with the callousness and cruelty of his deed is on purpose, and both are fundamentally true. he murdered mary, the woman he loved most, and even in the haze of his repression of that act, he still tries to be halfway decent. he still tries to find her because he loves her, and when the truth is revealed to him, it shatters him all over again.

however you may feel about him as a person is yours to feel, and that's fine, but sh2 is all about the uncomfortable gray and dubious spots within the human conscience, how grief and guilt and trauma can warp an individual into somebody capable of taking the life of another, and how therein that act of violence can range from justifiable to horrific. it's about what you choose to do with that trauma—be it something that happened to you or something you yourself enacted—and whether you let it eat you whole or if you're willing to live with it, regardless of if you're forgiven, if you're "washed clean" of your sins.

#there is definitely something to be said though abt james loving the memory of mary rather than mary herself #bcs i feel he had mourned her when she was still alive #and how mary herself embodies this dichotomy similarly to james #wherein she is neither a saint nor the devil incarnate #the point has always been that they're people #people who were ill-equipped to handle their situation in my mind's eye but still people #you're supposed to see the both of them and their respective dynamism #you can't put either of them on a pedestal narratively bcs that's not and will never be the point #it's a complicated and unpleasant and deeply uncomfortable situation that SUCKS #and you're supposed to SIT with that fact alongside the truth that these people truly did love each other #and idk if the audience will ever have the final say on what james truly deserves bcs every ending in sh2 is canon if you want it to be #ugh... i love sh2 #anyways #james sunderland #mary shepherd sunderland #silent hill

#im very very against crying because it just makes my head hurt and my face ugly #but because im so against crying i havent been able to sleep in months because #i keep having dreams of myself violently sobbing but i have to be super chill about everything #im not allowed to cry im the only one who doesnt cry thats the value i offer to my dying brother #is that im the only person not visibly mourning him yet #i almost cried at the doctor because they asked me how many siblings i had #its so fucking stupid i know #and i feel so bad like i abandoned him but he was slipping farther and farther every day it was horrible having to arrange hospice for him #then he agreed to the third surgery he never wanted to have but insurance didnt cover it #but 3 days later the surgeon did it out of pocket and now hes on new chemo but im still not with him #i ran away and gave my room to his mother so she could be with her dying son and i could catch a break #but it doesnt feel like a break im still constantly on the verge of tears and even though he chose to spend his last months with me #i chose to high tail it to another state because i couldnt stand the sight of him #he wouldnt let me take care of him anyways because im his baby sister 19 years younger than him and its a pride/shame thing i get it #whatever im done now i will always have video games

i mean it is insane behavior to marry someone you just met because they’re mistaking you for someone else but sebastian does make a real effort at rationalizing that decision, which is more than you can say for any of the other characters in the play besides viola, who has to stay very cognizant of not being too insane in public for her own well-being

#he also very much DID ditch antonio #like the play frames it as a mix up because viola didn’t recognize him but sebastian still did ditch him and didn’t meet him like he agreed #anyway #olivia seems normal at first but she’s also a fucking weirdo #she lets feste hang around and lets toby do whatever he wants and gets really intense about everything she feels #when she mourns her brother it’s a seven year affair of no visitors and committed depression #when she meets a guy she likes she decides she’s in love with him and chases him all around town and tries to marry him immediately #she’s very competent and like sebastian says can hold command of her household etc #but does she though. this whole business with malvolio happened right under her nose. feste is right she’s the fool!#love her but she is the fool #muppet behavior. she’s played by miss piggy in the muppets version that exists in my brain #twelfth night

you know my dudes i don't think i'm quite sure on whether i prefer "it's not a game" or "be safe/be good" as a prelude to it's just a ride aka the rtc finale cause like. "It's not a game" fits more musically and thematically to it's just a ride and it sounds so damn good and it focuses on the kids bittersweetingly making peace with their choice to concede for Jane Doe which is VERY important to them making peace with their lives in "it's just a ride" and their character arcs in regards to how they treat Jane Doe BUT THEN AGAIN "be safe/be good" has the kids MOURNING their deaths and the lives they left behind and like,,,the idea of first mourning their own deaths before coming to peace with them via finding the fun in the rollercoaster ride that led to their deaths IS SO FUCKING HEAVY AND PROFOUND ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THAT THE CHARACTERS ARE KIDS LIKE HOLY FUCK THAT'S IMPACTFUL
