It sort of depends. There's often a base word, and then sometimes they can change.

With dogs it's perro or perra, and with cats it's gato and gata

In your case it would be es una perra bonita "she's a beautiful dog" or more affectionately you might see perrito/a "puppy" or "little dog"; same with gatito/a "kitten" or "little cat"

*Note: This can be hard for some people in English because perra can be used as "bitch" where it is literally the female dog. The same issue happens with zorra "bitch", which is literally "vixen" or "female fox". But it is very common for people to refer to their female dogs as perra when talking about them and using the feminine nouns

There are a few animals that don't really change like birds and snakes and fish, but many domesticated animals and pets do. In a way it makes sense because domesticated animals are used for breeding or for meat, so there's more distinctions between gender and age

The basic ones to sort of be aware of for more wild animals:

el lobo = wolf / male wolf la loba = wolf / she-wolf

el oso = bear / male bear la osa = bear / she-bear

el conejo, la coneja = rabbit

el ciervo = deer / stag el venado = deer / stag, hart la cierva = deer / doe la venada = deer / doe

Where the names of animals don't change, you might see people use the terms el macho "male" and la hembra "female". As an example: el cocodrilo macho "male crocodile" or el cocodrilo hembra "female crocodile". Sometimes you'll see el macho/la hembra de (animal) as well, like la hembra de cocodrilo "the female crocodile"

But once context has been established you tend to see them just say el macho and la hembra as "male" and "female"

Hi! I saw your post about the tiefling and wanted to ask: is a shofar from a dragon or an extinct animal, like a ram's ancestor, kosher?

Oh! This is a fun one.

Starting with the easier one -the ancient proto-sheep. But first, I would like to note that I am neither a biologist nor a rabbi, and while I have consulted (albeit minimally) with both for the making of this post, I am not the best source. I can provide links to some useful reading, but tumblr being tumblr, with the link-eating that that entails, I will not be putting the links in the post itself.

This is the family tree map of the suborder Ruminantia.

As previously established, sheep are valid sources for a shofar. So too are goats and ibices (if I'm going to pretend to be scholarly, I'm going to use the technically-correct Latin plural) -the mishna even specifically addresses ibex horn as a possible source. Thus if our proto-sheep is still within tribe Caprinae, it is a valid source for a shofar.

What I did not address on the other post is that kudu (and gazelles, oryxes, etc) are also acceptable source animals for shofars. Antelopes, like bovines and caprines, have horns, rather than antlers. The requirement for the shofar is that it be a horn, not a bone -that the bone be covered with a keratin sheath. We can thus move further backwards, and authorize any ancestor still within sub-family Antilopinae.

And here is where we need to take a step out of modern science. The laws of kashrut predate genomics, and are often more rooted in morphology than phylogeny. A whale is not an unkosher animal, it is an unkosher fish, because it is fully aquatic. A bat is not an unkosher animal, it is an unkosher bird, because it is a warm-blooded flying creature.

Halachically speaking, if it looks like a cow and acts like a cow, and has the general criteria we associate with a cow, it's a cow. And cows are not acceptable source animals for shofars.

So if we move further back and reach a common ancestor in the family Bovidae, whether it's an acceptable source for a shofar depends on how cow-shaped it is. An aurochs, for instance, is a cow. While I was unable to find any sort of artistic rendering of the presumed last common ancestor at the divergence of Bovinae and Antilopinae, the earliest bovid I could find was Eotragus sansaniensis, which definitely seems closer in shape to an antelope than a cow. It is thus theoretically possible that an ancestral species in Bovidae might be permissible, with more cow-shaped bovines being specifically set aside from the rest of their family -in much the same way that we colloquially apply the term "reptile" to all non-bird modern diapsids. If that is the case, we would then move backward to the last common ancestor of bovines and cervines in suborder Ruminantia. (We might then be able to move forward along the deer tree until antlers diverge from horns, but that is not an ancient sheep, it's an ancient deer.)

We've got our rules on animals. Now we look at the shofar itself. Optimally, the shofar is curved, rather than straight. A straight shofar meets the technical requirements, but if you want to be as stringent as possible, a curved shofar is better. (That said, eland and gemsbok shofars are incredibly striking.) Per the mishna, even ibex horns are considered too straight to count as curved for this particular discussion -and ibices are specifically discussed as an acceptable source. (We used to use shofars for more purposes than we do today. There was a discussion about when to use the straight one vs the curly.)

Now, given that the shofar-making process usually involves some degree of straightening it in order to hollow out the mouthpiece, there is room for debate here. There are those communities and individuals who prefer striking or resonant shofars, and thus accept the larger ones obtained from various antelopes. There are also those communities that ban even a minimal amount of straightening of a ram's horn. Once we're arguing specific stringencies with common precedent for the lenient opinion, though, I think we can say we're in the clear for permissibility.

However. The previous post mentioned the issues with lacquering and otherwise decorating a shofar, which gets into another concern. Namely, the horn being used cannot possess any cracks or breaks from the end of the mouthpiece until one is past the minimum required length for a shofar.

And, unfortunately, old bones that have been around for millennia tend to have some wear and nicks on them, often of the sort that would invalidate a shofar for use.

So in conclusion, one can use the horn of any proto-sheep still within Ruminantia, unless they were too cow-shaped before diverging within Bovidae, in which case, one can use the horn of any proto-sheep within Antilopinae. But it must have either been phenomenally well-preserved, or the proto-sheep must have lived close enough to contemporaneously with the maker of the shofar that the horn has not sustained damage in the interim -ie, this must be a story involving time travel, cloning, or some sort of alternate history situation.

That Comprehensive Lusus Post: Mammals

The Quick Rundown:

Total Mammals: 1210 (30.25% of all lusii -- so 30%)

What I expected to see lots of (and did): Dogs and cats. Oh my God, dogs and cats. But dogs have a lot of variation, and cats are cute. So I expected this.

What I didn’t expected to see lots of (and didn’t): Whales/dolphins (cetacea). While there’s lots of variation like a dog (at least in whales), there’s only a few castes that most would give a whale or dolphin lusus to. Overall, there were 23 in the cetacea category, which is ~2% of all mammals and 0.5% of all lusii.

What I expected to see lots of (and didn’t):  Mongooses, Red and Giant Pandas and Okapis. There actually weren’t any Okapis, and while I didn’t expect many, I expected enough that I made a giraffidae category instead of just throwing Giraffes under other. The lack of pandas and mongooses legitimately caught me off guard. Mongooses/Red Pandas make up 0.33% of all mammals. Giant Pandas make up 0.5% of all mammals.

What I didn’t expect to see lots of (and did): I’m actually surprised how common sheep (sheep/ram) and cattle (cows/bulls/ox) in particular came up. I would have imagined canon Homestuck having both a ram and a fairy-bull would have discouraged more people, as I know a lot of those critique blogs would criticize someone for happening to use a lusus used in canon.

What I wish I saw more of: Okapis.

Overall Notes

There was honestly more variation than I expected to some degree. When I started doing this, I had to add the odd ungulate category. And in hindsight, I should have retroactively added a Sirenia category.

Unsurprisingly, common pets in North America is the most common. Not that such is a problem: Homestuck’s filled with American slang and written by an American. It’s just like how Changeling the Dreaming mentions puka fae should generally be common pets.  

In general - and this is a trend across the board - a nondescript version is more common than a specific one. This is applicable both to species where there’s not many variants and species with lots of variants. However, the likelihood of specification is ultimately very much creator-based. i.e: Some creators gave whole names (e.g: Valaris Blacknose Sheep, Long Tailed Weasel, Hungarian Puli Dog) and some gave simple names (Sheep, Weasel, Dog). There’s nothing wrong with either one, I just found it interesting how it fell.

You’ll notice mutations like 6 legged or 4 eyed don’t come up. Because this was listing species and not mutations, these were largely ignored. Except for “9 tailed fox”. I listed those separately because I wasn’t sure if they were referencing back to myth or not.

After listing all of these, I might go back and figure out exactly how many extinct species there are.

If you’re looking for something no one’s ever done, I suggest pulling from the Camelid or Mongoose family. Or an Okapi. All I’m saying...unholy combination of a zebra, a deer, and a giraffe.

Anyway, that’s the big stuff for mammals! Next up, I’ll be counting all the birds.

SHIFTERS:

TL;DR: Shifters are people that can turn into certain animals, they are not known to the general public and keep a low profile alongside other supernaturals. They have a little magic but can’t cast magic, and they have extra abilities depending on what animal they shift into. They have special laws they are subject to because human laws can’t apply to them, there is a special agency which upholds this.

Alongside humans and some other races, there are the Therianthropes. Therianthropy is the (in this case, hereditary) ability to metamorphose into animals by means of shapeshifting, and so Therianthropes are commonly just referred to as ‘Shifters’.

The known shifter types are as follows:

Lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, snow leopard, cheetah, cougar, lynx, domestic/housecat, wolf, fox, domestic dog, jackal, goat, sheep/ram, cows/bull, horse, monkey, hawk, eagle, owl, snake, crocodile, bear, elephant, rat, crow, deer, seal, swan, and rabbit.

Shifters are not known to most humans, but many myths and stories have come about because of humans seeing or coming into contact with them (seal shifters = selkies, swan shifters = swan maidens. Etc). Even among shifters, there are still more myths about additional types existing, rumours of dragons, unicorns, and phoenixes, but nothing has been confirmed.

Creatures such as griffins, hippogriffs, Pegasus, minotaur, and other hybrid-creatures which also appear in mythology and folklore are not shifters, even if they do have the therianthropy ability, since they are not born through natural means but through that of magic or interference.

Shifters themselves cannot cast magic, but they have a low level of it inherent in them and are resistant to the dark forms of it (magic which fights against nature itself), to a degree. They can also be used in magic, either as…ingredients, or as a ‘battery’ of sorts for the caster to draw from. Some shifters are more sensitive to magic than others and can pick out nearby users.

Each type of shifter has different abilities depending on what animal they shift into, but in general they have heightened senses and reflexes. They also have a higher body temperature than humans, giving them an almost feverish warmth, as well as a quicker heartbeat. The temperature and pulse can give them away to anyone that knows of that ‘quirk’. The old tale explaining why shifters are like this says it is because there are two ‘souls’ within the body, that of the human and of the animal.

Shifters remain a myth, the truth unknown to the general public. For many, many centuries the shifters have kept to themselves as best they could, preferring and needing to keep away from getting too much attention. They don’t want to be thought of as “animals” by the humans or others, nor do they want to risk being caught and experimented on for their abilities, so they keep a low profile.

They do have some allies they acquired over the centuries, the witch communities and families are generally on good terms with the shifters, the two have been linked since the beginning.

The other main “ally” is a secret government agency known as SIAP (Supernatural Incidents and Awareness Prevention), because there’s always gotta be a secret government agency. They are known about by only a few key, high up members of government, internationally as well. There are SIAP branches in most countries, usually posing as either environmental groups or marketing and research specialists.

SIAP is responsible for keeping a record of all known shifters and other supernaturals, they’re also supposed to help uphold the regulations and laws for such beings, since they can’t be judged by human ones.

We can be more accurate if we use gender-specific nouns. - Gender-specific nouns exist because in the past, some jobs are exclusive only for male or female.
