Some time ago I had a conversation in which I came to the conclusion that Raya could still find it hard to sleep since she got used to being alert during the 6 years she was alone, which led me to want to draw her taking a nap feeling protected by the rest of the gang

Some random small cultural nods that I noticed in Raya and the Last Dragon as a Filipino Southeast Asian:

”Have you eaten?”: A lot of food scenes, a lot of offerings of food. How Southeast Asian is that? If you haven’t eaten, you haven’t been truly welcomed into the group.

Eating together and eating on banana leaves (or having things wrapped in banana leaves)

Random fruits I saw that are native to Southeast Asia: longan, rambutan, dragon fruit, mangos, jackfruit 

Speaking of mangos: the absolute worship of them. If you don’t like mangos, are you OK? 

The taking off of shoes when entering into certain rooms

The specifically Southeast Asian martial arts including Arnis, Silat, and Eskrima...and let’s not forget the weapons like the kris/kalis sword.

Naga dragons

Not entirely sure what the whole name of Sisu (her whole name being Sisudatu) means, but I was surprised to hear “datu” at the end of her name. “Datu” refers to a leader or a chief in the Philippines.

The women at the forefront! Believe it or not, an exclusively patriarchal society is a colonized concept. Women were always leaders in SEA, and continue to be. Men and women were seen equally, especially pre-colonialism. In the Philippines (and in Filipino families), a lot of households tend to trend toward a more matriarchal household. Women are usually more in charge of the money. Though of course there are exceptions.
