praise kink dialogue

here’s a list of various phrases i’ve found and reference often split into praises and what I would consider encouragements. i keep them together for ease of use. i’ve also broken down my process a little bit below that. these have been accumulated over time (and too much time reading through r/bdsmadvice). many are fem! gendered because that’s what i write most often, but that’s easy to change.

on degradation: it’s also pretty easy to take a praise and make it humiliating or degrading if that’s what you’re going for. adding a degrading nickname/title is the most obvious way to do it, but some of my favorite ways are more subtle. using a condescending tone of voice, an aptly timed praise when the receiver is doing something gross/typically seen as humiliating or degrading, etc.

don’t like how something is worded? take it apart and rephrase it the way your character might say it.

phrase i found:

“Quiet my love, I want to hear how wet you are for me, it’s intoxicating.”

used for different characters or whatever:

bakugo: “shut your fuckin’ mouth, wanna hear how wet you are for me. ‘s perfect, princess.”

kirishima: “be quiet angel, you sound so pretty and i wanna hear it. fuck, you’re so wet, baby. i can’t get enough of you.”

aizawa: “hush, sweetheart. let me hear your pretty little pussy. it’s fucking intoxicating.”

What's another word for 'engorged'?

Tired of using the same descriptors over and over?

Or, if you're like me, perhaps you're anxious that somebody is going to read your smut only to roll their eyes and say, "Ugh, can we please find another way to describe [body part and/or sex act]."

Well, say "Huzzah!" because here are some helpful (free) resources I found specifically for writing erotica and romance. I hope these help you write the smutty fanfic of your dreams!

The Sexy Thesaurus by Laurel Clarke specifically addresses alternate names for genitalia.

Laurel also has The Sexy Thesaurus 2 (action words) and The Sexy Thesaurus 3 (descriptors).

Here's an alphabetized list of Useful Words for Writers of Romance and Erotica.

Here is a blog that has various posts called Physical Feature Entry that focus on specific body parts - not just genitalia.

Representation Matters!!!

Most erotica I've read, especially published fiction, features white cishet characters. I wanted to try to find other resources that address writing for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC characters.

This isn't a resource on descriptors, but it's about writing queer erotica and I just really liked it: Erotica, But Like, Queer...: An Insider Perspective. I love how they mention how many authors got their start writing fanfiction.

Here's 5 Things I Wish I'd Known About Writing Lesbian Erotica, which I feel can also extend to scenes with two males/people with penises.

Writing BIPOC Characters: A Conversation with JT Moore - fantastic interview with published author JT Moore. This is for writing any BIPOC character, not just in the erotica/romance genres.

In terms of how things age on the internet, this next resource is pretty old. Originally written in 2013, it was updated in 2017. And yes...it is on fanfiction.net. I haven't read the entire thing, but hey, it's called The Ultimate Guide to Writing Smut Fic.

Dissecting Smut: Worthy

Hey, we recently had a short discussion on our Discord about how to write smut. While there are plenty of resources out there for different terms and what to consider for the more "technical" aspects, I thought it might be helpful if I go into how I build atmosphere, what kind of thoughts go into specific sentences, and so on.

So this is for all writers, but also of course readers!

Under the cut for explicit content

We're looking at the Bane-fucking scene from Worthy, Chapter 2. Previous to this Tav had been edged without release in Ch. 1, now Bane appeared, and he made Gortash lick his boots. I needed to now move into the Bane-fucking somewhat seamlessly, so I decided to have Tav undress him.

Everything in bold marked by me:

She walked over to him and took off the boots that Gortash had licked moments ago, the long streaks still visible. Bane stood up so she could undo his buckle, loosening his pants so that they dropped to the floor, and he stepped out of them while Tav pulled them away. He wasn’t wearing underwear or socks, so his thick thighs, large feet, and massive cock stood free immediately.

the long streaks still visible gives a visual queue for the reader. everyone can picture the dampness a tongue lick leaves behind. having this here connects the previous scene to Tav, who so far had been passively watching.

I wanted this to be size kinky so I made sure to mention Bane's size several times. Having her undress him helped make that clear as this was the time she really got up close to him, noticing how large he was (once again).

Sitting back down on the altar, he patted his lap before cupping Tav’s face with his hand, his palm larger than her cheeks. “Come. I know your cunt is begging for release.”

another size reference. it's subtle – just the mention of his palm against her cheeks, a generally tender gesture, drives that home

"begging for release" – tying this back to what happened previously (aka the edging in chapter 1). sometimes people struggle with writing smut that is embedded into the chapter or scene, and stuff like this is how I personally like to do it. Have characters banter, or refer to something that happened earlier. It doesn't always have to be sexual!

Tav looked around the room, taking in the scene once more, almost as if to figure out if this was all some sort of weird prank or if she had been privy to a spell that made her hallucinate. But the Banites, having stopped chanting, simply stood there and watched while Gortash sat on the back of his feet, staring at her with an unreadable expression.

this paragraph is me zooming out of the scene. if you imagine a movie, we had a lot of close ups (the boot licking, the descriptions of his size, the spoken lines). I like contrasting this every now and then by adding a description of the wider room/setting, to really anchor it in the moment.

The Banites are still there! They're mostly irrelevant for now but adding them here takes the edge off for the readers wondering what is going on with them. It also, yet again, ties it back to the earlier scenes in the fic

it also buys some time for pacing. Tav is still a bit hesitant because of her disbelief, so having her buy time feels authentic.

Gortash being mentioned makes sure we just don't "forget" about him. He's kneeling, he's "parked there", so to speak, so we acknowledge him even though he won't be a major part of the action. "closing" this makes sure readers don't keep wondering what happened to him and can focus on the action

“I hate waiting”, Bane roared, and his tone was sharp for the first time. Swallowing nervously Tav climbed into his lap, reaching down to guide his already hard erection into her, but his big hand caught hers before she could. “This isn’t anything to be rushed”, he interrupted her, looking into her eyes. Tav’s world started to spin – the fiery red pulled her in, quickening her heart rate while slowing her breathing, making her feel dizzy and lightheaded. “This is worship.”

He hates waiting but he doesn't want to rush – at first glance contradictory, just like I wanted Bane to come across. He has a specific logic to him that is all about him being obeyed. I put this section in specifically to build character and show that he has one rule: his word is law, immediately. he called out to her, she didn't immediately obey, hence the roaring. two seconds later he's issuing a new command. keep up, Tav

"worship": I made sure to throw in as many religious themes as possible, tying this into the overarching theme of making amends to a god

He took her hands behind her back, holding them and her in place at the same time, then brought his other hand between her legs. She was still wet, or wet again, it was getting hard to tell.

a slight callback to the previous scenes agains while also establishing that Tav is into what is happening (with a slight dash of dubcon)

Bane pushed one finger into her cunt without warning, and Tav gasped at the girth of it. When he added a second one she thought she would faint, moaning loudly as he pumped in and out of her.

Size kink! size kink! size kink!

"moaning loudly" - have the characters make noise!

The god took his time with her, adding flicks of his thumb against her clit until Tav’s eyes rolled back, then pulled his fingers back out to a protesting whine from her. Between them, pressed against both of their stomachs, was his large cock, and Tav licked her lips thinking about sinking down on him.

Establishing that she is into him here. She enjoyed it, she wants more of it, she makes it known (subconsciously!)

Utilize different senses to show pleasure: she can't focus her vision, she makes a sound, she licks her lips (touch/taste)

Humming with approval, Bane brought his slick-covered fingers to his mouth, sucking them clean. “Adequate”, he nodded and let go of her hands, then lifted her body up by her thighs as if she didn’t weigh anything. “Guide”, he commanded.

Bane is into Tav enjoying this. It's hot because this isn't non-con so having characters get turned on by the other's pleasure is always good. Have the characters react to each other!

"sucking them clean": nothing like throwing in some taste/touch references

Character/atmosphere building: while he is into her arousal, he is still Bane, so he bosses her around.

Tav reached down to push his tip against her entrance. Just the tip alone was wide, so wide, and when he lowered her body down on him she sobbed out a curse so loud it echoed through the hall as her walls stretched to accommodate him. From behind her, she heard Gortash suck in a deep breath.

Now, after building all this foreplay/tension, she's about to fuck him. We're really driving home the size kink so of course another mention of his girth

It's difficult for her to take him. We're switching between external view (push his tip against her entrance, lowered her body – this is all "looking down on them" phrasing as a narrator) and her feelings (wall stretching, sobbed out a curse – we're put into her sensations, helping us visualize it better) before going back into the wider setting (echoed through the hall, she heard Gortash)

check that I wrote "she heard Gortash suck in a deep breath", instead of "Gortash sucked in a deep breath". This phrasing is something I use a lot and it centers Tav, making it truly her POV.

“Fuck”, Tav panted, sitting still, unmoving, Bane’s cock twitching inside her as her muscles worked hard to fit him. The god chuckled deeply, then leaned back on the altar to rest his body on his forearms, watching her. “Worship me”, he demanded, voice booming through the room.

again, Tav needs time. I feel this makes it more authentic, so she sits still, giving her body a moment.

Bane is amused because he's this weird detached deity. Mentioning his odd mannerisms helps with that.

another religious reference in a commanding tone for tension/atmosphere!

It was almost too much and she hadn’t even started, but Tav rolled her hips tentatively into his, then raised her body so she could sink down on him again, spreading more of her juices on his cock. After a few repetitions she felt ready to ride him properly.

We're leaving the factual descriptions of the action for the sake of giving Tav a bit more POV by mixing in "it was almost too much" and "she felt ready"

Her pants were so loud she could barely hear herself think. Not that anything coherent was happening on her mind anyway – all she could focus on was the way Bane’s length pushed into her, rubbing at spots that made her whimper with need, and how his menacing eyes dragged over her body again and again, watching her cunt sink down on him, her tits bounce, and her mouth fall open.

More audio clues! She's fucking him now, so I'm showing her arousal here with the panting. Not using "moan" was a deliberate choice: She is panting from exertion, too. Moaning would not have made that point.

The second, very long sentence centers how she experiences Bane all while letting us know what Bane is doing. Tav is so into it that everything fades to black. It's just fucking Bane, so the descriptions are also only fucking Bane.

Bane, still half shadow, half man, felt different than anything she’d ever experienced. Every inch she took in dragged out a new sort of desire, every part he touched burned her core with need. But he was breathing heavily too, flaming eyes half-closed with lust, and hands clenched into fists.

if it's just Bane, what does that mean? He's a god, after all. I mentioned in the chapter earlier that he was a shadowy figure, so I wanted to include that here, so that readers don't wonder about that. Nothing more distracting than dropping in a particular description of something and then never bringing it up again!

He's aroused too and that shows through his tensing body. It's good fucking.

After a particularly slow roll of her hips he groaned and sat up, bringing his hands down to her ass to pull her into him. “Don’t tease”, he growled. “Submit.” And with that he started to pound into her, slamming his hips upwards with force. Tav’s breath caught in her throat, but when a shadow enveloped her breast, sucking on it with greed, her cunt started to spasm around him.

it doesn't matter if Tav was teasing or just taking it slow because he's massive, here's another part where we get to witness Bane's arbitrary demands.

I decided not to have a long build up for her at this point, and rather have her come almost suddenly. Why? She's been edged the entire first chapter so I didn't want to repeat myself, Bane is not into the whole edging thing right now, and I wanted to show that she has little control over how things go, even in her orgasm. Instead of a slow build up with references about how she's climbing, Bane sucks on her tit and she gets so overwhelmed she comes on the spot.

“G-gods”, she came so forcefully she punched his chest, crying out a curse while gasping again and again, waves of accumulated pleasure releasing all at once while he bounced her on his cock. Between their legs her cunt gushed out spurts of wetness, and Bane huffed with approval as it dripped down his balls and alongside the insides of his thighs.

yes she's calling on the gods while fucking one. i found it funny :D

Suddenly, spotting something behind her, Bane chuckled. “See what the Black Hand thinks of your worship.” Tav turned her chest and crooked her head so she could see Gortash behind her, still kneeling in front of the altar, his hands clasped on his back. His cock was half-hard, and down on his thighs she spotted a small puddle of cum.

we're slowly zooming out now: at first Bane talks to her, pulling our attention away from specific body parts to a conversation. By asking her to look at something I'm gently widening the scene for the readers so we can get into the description of what else is/was happening in the room

Gortash! yes. he's still kneeling. we're not surprised by this because it was mentioned earlier. but he came untouched: this also drives home the point about everyone being into this, plus it's a hot kink, and last but not least it ties him into the scene. If I hadn't have him come here, I probably would have had him exchange words with Bane to subtly include him back into the scene.

The chapter goes on for longer (including knotting), but I'm gonna stop at this point. Happy to expand more if anyone wants me to!

What is somnophilia? When you say edging... You mean??? Thats a thing? Yes! It is a thing! Welcome to the kink-tionary; don't yuck someone else's yum.

Ok, lets first begin with what exactly is a kink?

A kink is defined as anything that veers off the 'normal' sexual path or experience. It's used to describe things that are of particular sexual curiosity and interest to someone. Things like behaviors and/or practices outside of normal sexual behavior.

What about a fetish? What's the difference? The answer in not so many words is a kink is meant to increase the pleasure and a fetish almost replaces a partner with an object. So in other words, a kink adds to the experience but a fetish is a necessity in order to get off.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but whips and chains excite me...

So we'll start with some of the most common kinks I could find and we'll just keep adding to this list. Here we go!

BDSM: BDSM is an umbrella term that covers a broad variety of practices and it stands for Bondage, Discipline/Domination, Submission/Sadism, and Masochism. BDSM is all about one party exerting dominance over the other and it is mutually consensual, pre-agreed upon, and a satisfying encounter for BOTH parties. 50 Shades of Grey IS NOT THE EXAMPLE YOU WANT TO DRAW FROM. I am not part of the BDSM community but I do have friends in it and they all tell me the same thing, the movie/book is a very poor representation of the community but it's not the only one. BDSM is about trust, consent, and respect. If you or your character derives pleasure from the fantasy of letting their/your partner have their way with you, or if you derive pleasure from the idea of "making" your partner service and please you. This really deserves its own post as it covers a lot but the key thing here is CONSENT. RESPECT. AND MUTUAL PLEASURE. The most highly recommended books I could find on the kink were things like For Real by Alexis Hall, An Old Fashioned Love Song by Michelle K Grant (this book is free!), A Seditious Affair by KJ Charles.

Sadism and Masochism: These two can also fall under the BDSM umbrella as well. These kinks are about your relationship to pain. A sadist gets pleasure from inflicting pain on a sexual partner but it doesn't necessarily have to be sexual pain. A masochist gets pleasure from being hurt. This is also meant to be consensual, and the use of safewords is a necessity. This can veer off into dark territory very easily.

Ropes and Bondage: Another element from the BDSM umbrella. Its a very popular kink and one of the most well known. It involves the use of safewords and trust, respect, consent.

Hosiery: This is the interest in wearing things like pantyhose or having a parner wearing them while having sex or engaging in sexual activity.

Voyeurism: Voyeurism is being turned on by watching other people have sex.

Exhibitionism: This is the opposite side to the coin that is Voyeurism; which is the act of being watched surring sex or other sexual acts.

Roleplay: Taking on different persons during sex and living out a fantasy, stepping outside of yourself for a more intense experience. Popular troupes are professor/student, master/slave, etc.

Dirty Talk: Yes, this counts as a kink. It's the act of using suggestive or explicit language to heighten excitement or sensation. Like what you're doing to your partner, waht you want to do, what you plan to do, what you want them to do to you, etc.

Urophilia: Also known as 'Golden showers' or 'Watersports' this is for people who are turned on by urination, either giving or recieving.

Nipple Play: This centers around a focus on plaing wiht your partners nipples or your own. Things like licking, biting, teasing, etc.

Humiliation: Being arousesd by being put in your place, or being humiliated. So you things like your partner tellign you your dick is small, or you're a slut. It can also involve acts like boot licking and facials (Ejaculating on yout partners face).

Cuckholding: More common among men but not exclusively. This is when you're turned on by your partner having sex in front of you, or away from you but typically it invovles watching directly.

Female Led Relationship: This involves being aroused by giving the female in a heterosexual relationship most of the sexual control. So, sex could center on what she likes primarily as an example.

Auralism: Also called a Sound Kink, the act of being aroused by sounds; think partners hitting the wall durring sex, moans, or things like listening to NSFW audio content, spicy audiobooks.

Age Play: This one involves two CONSENTING ADULTS; you take on roles or ages other than your own so think mommy/daddy in bed, little girl, baby, etc.

Orgasm Control: It can go along with BDSM, but it involves letting your partner control the timing of your orrgasms, usually things like bondage are involved.

Impact Play: Spanking, paddling, canning, etc. Being hit in a consensual erotic context releases endorphins and it gives you a bit of a rush.

CNC: A bit of a controversial one in my opinion, but it stands for Consensual Non Consent. This is someone who is aroused by the idea of being forced or taken by their partner while they pretend to say no. They're commonly referred ot as Rape Fantasies, it's preagreed upon, an carefully arranged by all parties. not for the feint of heart.

Gags: Being turned on by wearing or using gags, think ball gags, panties, etc.

Praise Kink: Being turned on by praise and compliments; think "you're doing so good taking my cock, baby." Or, "You're so pretty when you come,"

Degradation: This is the opposite of a praise kink, being insulted through words or actions; being called a worthless slut, or being spit on, jerked off on, etc.

Blood Play: The act of being aroused by blood, your own or your partners, really popular among anything vampire, werewolf, supernatural etc.

Autoplushophilia: FURRIES!!!! We all know the furries, invovles animal costumes and imagining oneself as an animal.

Mummification: Yet another I was unaware of, no its not having sex with actual mummies, althought that could certainly be a thing. This. involves wrapping your partenr or being wrapped yoursefl in things like Saran Wrap.

Odaxelagnia: Involves sexua arousal through biting or being bitten, it's amild form of sadomasichism.

Olfactophilia or Osmolagnia: Also called a Scent Kink, this involves being turned on by smells, think panty sniffing, arousal smelling, sweat, etc.

Overstimulation: This involves being put into a state of too much sensory input. Usually it involves multiple orgasms without any time to calm down or relax, it can be almost painful before its pleasurable again.

Knife Play: A form of CONSENSUAL BDSM edge play usign knifes, swords, daggers as a source of physical and mental stimulation. Think scratches on skin, cutting away clothes, etc.

Frottage: The act of being stimulated by rubbing against another person, think people who get a little too close on trains, or at crowded venues like concerts.

Forced Orgasm: Another for the BDSM family where one consents to being forced ot orgasm in a way that's beyond their control.

Orgasm Denial: The act of being aroused by being denied an orgasm for a period of time, the idea is that when you do finally orgasm its much stronger than usual because you're so worked up.

Edging: Similar to Orgasm Denial it invovles stretching out how long it takes to reach orgasm, masturbaing pretty much until the point of orgasm before stopping all sexual stimulation.

Temperature Play: The act of using temperatures as stimulation, think ice cubes, and hot wax.

Dacryphilia: Being aroused by tears or sobbing

Size Kink: Being aroused by differences in size in comarison to your partner, height, weight, muscle size, dick size, etc.

Pegging: Penatrive sex invovled things like strap ons and slides, usually involving the anus of men or women.

Somnophilia: Being aroused by people who are sleeping.

Breeding: Being aroused by sex with the purpose of impregnation.

Purity/Virginity Kink: being arouse by having sex with a virgin

Leather/Latex: Being aroused by the use of leather or latex, think body suits, leather gloves, etc.

Food play: Being aroused by food in sex, licking whipepd cream or chocolate sauce off a lovers body.

Wax Play: Using melted wax on a partners body, these are meant to be sepecial candles iwth a low burning temperature so as not to harm.

Shibari: Japanese Bondage, intricate knots, etc.

Safe Sex Resource

A lot of the time, in our writings online, we don’t always show our characters practicing safe sex (whether for narrative flow or other reasons) and will just add in our author’s notes to practice safe sex in your real life. It can be hard to find good and concise information online so I have compiled this for authors to link in their notes. I recommend everyone take a look, there might be something in here you didn't already know.

This post is largely inspired by @fakejuly who shared a lot of their knowledge and advice from their years in the sw industry, and from my own experience creating curriculums for and teaching sex & relationship education.

I have tried to make it as inclusive as possible, please let me know if you have any feedback. If you spot something I missed, please let me know. I will be updating this periodically. My inbox is also always open if you have any questions/concerns/etc.

"Condoms prevent STIs and pregnancy in the vast majority of cases, when used correctly."

Using a condom correctly and consistently can increase its efficacy from 87% to 98%. Most surveyed individuals are not using it correctly or consistently so make sure you are well-informed. We hear this all the time, but what does “used correctly” actually mean?

Familiarize yourself with the steps.

Using the right size: if it's too big, it can slide off or leak; if it's too small, it can break or come off. Condoms usually come in 5 sizes (there are options like MyONE that have 52 sizes).

Condoms can be damaged by heat. They should be kept somewhere cool (not in wallets, or sat on in back pockets, or kept in your glovebox). They also have an expiry date.

Sex can also lead to friction (heat) so condoms should be changed between activities and after about 15 minutes of any vigorous activity.

Never double up (i.e. wearing two condoms or using both an external and an internal condom).

Use lube 100% of the time (except oral sex), even if you think you don't need it, even for "lubricated" condoms (the lube mainly stops it sticking to itself). Lube should be applied to the outside, but a drop in the tip of the condom before putting it on is also a good idea.

NEVER use oil-based lube or any type of oil (e.g. lotion, vaseline, coconut oil). Water based lube is the best option. Silicone based lube can be good for sex in water (e.g. shower, pool, bath) or providing more sustaining slip, but be careful near your sex toys (more on this later).

Penetrative partners should hold the base of the condom when they pull out immediately after they ejaculate so the condom doesn't leak or come off as the penis gets flaccid.

For oral sex (vulval or anal), you should use a barrier. You can make one out of a condom. (There are also companies like Loral that make latex “underwear” that have great sensation transfer and are a very good barrier for AFAB individuals).

Sharing sex toys: Most of the sex toy safety recommends "don't share them ever" which unfortunately is impractical for some people.

If more than one person is going to use the toy (within a session or between different sessions), use a condom.

Condoms are often coated in a thin layer of silicone lube. This can react with low-quality silicone toys - there are unlubricated condoms for those - but higher-quality (platinum cured) silicone should be fine. When in doubt, spot test on the base of the toy.

As with above, always use water-based lube.

Condoms have not been proven to protect you from mold that the toy may be harboring or toxic chemicals from low-quality materials (e.g. jelly toys).

prevention is the best cure

Due to the variable efficacy of condoms, for individuals where pregnancy is a concern, it is recommended to also be using the pill, injection, IUD, etc.

Condoms (internal or external) are the only prevention for STIs. This isn't meant to be stressful - the most common STIs are treatable and often curable (more on this later).

STIs can be transmitted via fluids AND skin contact, so use condoms when you’re engaging in oral sex, hand stuff or sharing sex toys, in addition to penetrative sex.

STIs can be transmissible via any of your fluid membranes, that includes your mouth, throat, nose, and eyes.

Condoms are extremely effective against HIV, and reasonably effective against chlamydia and gonorrhea. Contracting chlamydia and gonorrhea is not the end of the world, it is curable with antibiotics but you can also be asymptomatic.

Condoms aren’t as effective at preventing herpes (symptomatically will manifest as open sores) and HPV (symptomatically will manifest as genital warts).

Everyone who is able to should get the HPV vaccine, regardless of gender or sexuality. HPV is the most common STI. Most cases resolve on their own within 2 years, but for those that don’t, it can lead to cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus and throat. Almost all cervical cancers are caused by HPV. The vaccine is extremely effective.

Even if you believe you have been safe and are asymptomatic, get tested regularly. At least once a year. (Even if you are in a long term monogamous relationship).

In summary:

Try your best to be safe but in real life, shit happens, so at least stick to these three things: 1) know your safety boundaries prior to sex and don't change them for anybody, 2) talk/ask about STI status before anything begins, and 3) get tested regularly.

CONSENT IS MANDATORY.

Communication is what makes sex good. Talking about sex is sexy. :)
