You just posted like ten different things about potatoes in the span of maybe five minutes, and I gotta know your take on "The Martian".

Like, the (fictional) man alone on a planet literally only survives because of potatoes shrink-wrapped in plastic for a Thanksgiving meal. If they weren't slated to be on Mars for Thanksgiving, he would have died.

And Andy Weir (author of the original novel) did such a good job with the science of every other element to the story, I honest-to-god believe that potatoes could actually manage to grow in Martian soil (even if that's not been proven for certain afaik).

Which means..... could potatoes terraform Mars into sustaining life??? Are potatoes the key to the universe???

Haha sorry for going so hard on them! Those were mostly all posts from 2020 when gardening and fantasy worldbuilding were lockdown fixations for me. One of them blew up recently so I wanted to give The People more of the content it seemed they were looking for. I don't actually know a lot about potatoes. I just think they're neat.

I do not want to take apart the concept of "colonizing Mars" as some kind of woke gotcha. I want to take your question seriously and charitably. However, I just am the kind of person who's like "Hmm, 'colonize', we should really stop and unpack that word," so let's do that, without forgetting the potato element.

(What "I don't know a lot" means: Potatoes were a crop my family grew several acres of for a few years on our farm before we switched our focus to sheep. I am about 50% as reliable as a horticultural brochure on various potato diseases and growing condition issues. I have listened to two University lectures and read perhaps four historical journal articles beginning-to-end on how the Columbian Exchange affected early-modern Europe, that and half as much again on medieval and early modern European farming practices and population changes, and perhaps three science/history articles specifically on the domestication and proliferation of the potato. I am a white Canadian who actively seeks out information and training in Indigenous history and culture in the Americas, but that's probably still only equal to like, two Native Studies classes in university. I know more than the average person on this topic, but I am also not an expert compared to people who have devoted serious time to learning about this.)

But I have some intuitions in a couple of ways:

The Martian is probably being wildly over-optimistic about its potatoes. They would probably have been irradiated into sterility before being vacuum-packed, and I don't think you can split and propagate them that quickly or successfully. However, potatoes can definitely grow in all kinds of conditions (including under my sink).

They might not be the world's healthiest or happiest potatoes, tho. Soil quality definitely affects the end product. Presumably Watney, being a botanist studying Mars' soil composition, knew how much he had to ameliorate his soil with latrine compost (which would definitely have needed a LOT of processing, since human waste is generally not good for plants, but maybe he used chemicals to speed that up?) to get good soil. However, we would probably need to add a LOT of shit to Mars' soil (and air, and water) for it to host plant life.

Mark Watney makes a joke about having "colonized Mars" because "colony" is Latin for "farm" and he farmed on Mars so haha, funny joke! And we talk about colonies on Mars partly because that's what science fiction did, and a lot of science fiction has been into that colonialism aesthetic. But colonialism and empires actually aren't great, not just because they necessitate huge amounts of racism, oppression, and genocide—I know, you asked me a fun question about potatoes and did not sign up for this, I'm not here to drag you, hear me out—but because they're also really sucky models for agriculture and successful societies generally.

My British ancestors tried to be colonial farmers in a place that is sometimes colder than Mars (Canada's Treaty Six), and let me tell you: IT SUCKED. Most of the crops and herbs and vegetables and flowers that settlers here brought from home and are used to? DON'T FUCKEM GROW. For the Canadian prairies to become conventional farmland, farmers and scientists had to scramble to find, or produce, cold-hardy varieties of everything from wheat to roses. A lot of flowers and plants that are unkillable invasive zombie perennials in other climates don't survive our winters no matter hard we try. The trees and flowers that hold cultural or sentimental attachments for us often don't grow here. The climate is so harsh and population is spread so thin that we cannot do the 100 mile diet and eat foods we're familiar with, and can hardly even manage the 1000 mile diet. (Not that I try, but, my family did once look into it)

A huge number of colonial homesteads, where the pioneers go out on their little covered wagon and build little houses on the prairie? Failed miserably and got bought up by land speculators. My own family came out to Alberta in the 1880s and moved around from land assignment to land assignment, like, six times before settling at their current place in the early 1900s.

Meanwhile: POTATOES

Potatoes are less than ten thousand years old! I am not any kind of expert on archaeology, please nobody throw things, but humans showed up in the Andes (think: high, cold mountains) of South America roughly 9,000 years ago. There are hundreds of wild potato varieties, but they generally produce fairly tiny tubers. It took active work of Indigenous Andean people around 8,000 years ago around Lake Titicaca to cultivate specific strains of potato, doing oldschool genetic modification to make them bigger, more delicious, and hardier. From that cultivation effort around a single species of wild potatoes, they produced thousands of cultivated potato varieties.

Ancient Andean farmers and botanists also played a big part in cultivating quinoa from wild amaranth, as well as producing modern food crops you probably haven't heard of, like oca, olluco, mashua, and yacon, and also coca, which may get a bad rap because it's what cocaine and coca-cola are made from but you cannot deny it's got kick.

Basically, Indigenous people of the Americas (South, Central, and North) went all in on botany and plant cultivation. Plants that we take for granted now have mostly been developed by Indigenous people in the past few thousand years: Tobacco, sunflowers, marigolds, tomatoes, pumpkins, rubber, vanilla, cocoa, sweetcorn, maize, and most kinds of pepper except peppercorn. These things were not found; they were made, by careful cultivation of the world as it was.

This gives us a vision of the future. Colonization, and industrial agriculture, both lean us towards the vision of a totally uniform end product, with the same potato varieties grown on each farm because we have made every farm the same. Instead we could embrace biodiversity and focus on privileging local knowledge and considering the interactions of environment, plants, microbiota, and people. We could create potatoes that were happy on Mars. We could create Mars that is happy to have us. We could create a society that can accept what Mars has to offer.

A lot of why we dream about colonizing Mars is the idea that the Earth itself is dying, that we are killing it, and we need to abandon this farmstead and seek out a new frontier. I acknowledge that shit is bad, but I don't agree with that framing. I am increasingly persuaded that there is a third path between ecological destruction and mass exodus, and I think we need to reject European colonial mentality that creates the forced choice. I find far more use in privileging the knowledge of people who live on and with land than their landlords and rulers, and I especially find value in Indigenous knowledge of land management practices and food production.

I am absolutely not saying that Indigenous people were or are wonderful magical ~spiritual beings~ who frolicked in an Edenic paradise that only knew death and disease once white people showed up. This isn't noble savage bullshit, nor am I invoking people who existed once but whom I have never met. I am saying that I have Indigenous neighbours, colleagues, relatives, and elected representatives. I have learned about mental health, leatherworking, botany, and ecology from Metis and First Nations elders and knowledge-keepers. And like. They have good and useful shit to say.

This is about culture, not race. It is not that their biological DNA means that they know more than me about how to get food from this landscape. It's about cultural history and what we learn from our heritages. What have our cultures privileged? Like, Europe has historically been super into things like metallurgy, domesticating livestock, and creating dairy products. If I want to smelt iron or choose animals to make cheese from, European society would have a lot of useful information for me! And what Indigenous cultures in the Americas have historically focused on instead of cows and copper* include 1) getting REAL familiar with your local flora and figuring out how to make sure you have lots of the herbs and grains and roots and berries you need, and 2) how to make a human society where people can live and have good lives, but do not damage the environment enough to impair the ability of future generations to have the same sort of life.

*Several indigenous American cultures did practice various forms of metallurgy. It's just one of those proportional things, about what societies really go for

Conclusion

I think we could use the processes that formed the potato to find and foster forms of life that could survive on Mars. It would involve learning to think that botany is a sexy science, and understanding just how rich and complicated the environment is. To oxygenate the atmosphere, we'd have to get super enthusiastic about algae and lichen and wetlands. We would have to learn to care deeply about the microorganisms living in the soil, and whether the potatoes are happy.

We'd have to create an economy that counts oxygen and carbon dioxide production on its balance sheets. To learn how to wait for forests to grow back after a fire, instead of giving up in despair because the seedlings aren't trees yet. To do the work now and be hopeful even though we might not see the payoffs for decades, or our victories might only be witnessed by future generations.

So yes, I think we could totally plant potatoes on Mars

But I also think that if we ever got there, we'd have turned into the kind of people who could also save Earth in the first place.

Which makes it a good enough goal in my opinion.

Queer people in the middle ages

So, the whiny manchildren, who want the middle ages to conform to their white supremacist fantasy, also keep claiming that there were no queer people in the middle ages - or that in fact queer folks just miraculously materialized at some point in the 1970s. But let me talk about one thing: How do we know that there were queer people in the middle ages? And how do we know that actually apparently at least some queer people in the European middle ages were living fairly openly?

Now, the very obvious answer to the first question is, that we do know that biologically queerness is simply a part of human nature. We know that just some people will be queer. How many people are queer... Well, biologist and psycholigists will argue with no end about this. Because of course we cannot look at someone and say "Oh, definitely a queer person", so we can only base our assumptions on what people say when asked. And we absolutely do know that how many people will admit to being queer the less afraid they are of societal consequences. Of course, biologically we can look at some apes and will see that their group behaviors work centrally over exchanging sexual favors with basically most apes being bi... But yeah, currently we can only guess. Maybe 10% of all humans are queer in some way or form - maybe it is more like 50%, maybe even more. We don't really know.

But what about the middle ages?

See, here I gotta say that I at times am annoyed with the way a lot of queer folks interact with history by just speculating about the queerness of some well known historical figures. Don't get me wrong, quite a few of them might have been queer. But this also falls into a very typical falacy.

Basically, when we talk about history we have the bad habbit of talking mainly about a few well known historical figures. When it comes to the middle ages, this narrative tends to focus mostly on clergy and nobility. This is partly because we have the best historical record of them - but also because to this day we tend to overvalue the lives of people who have influence.

And the other falacy is, that we just assume that the Victorian ideals about sex were true in the middle ages and that henceforth people were not able to be open about it.

Because here is the thing. We actually do have records of people being fairly open about it. This is partly records we have from lower nobility and especially gentry, but at times also from the peasants and normal folks that history often tends to ignore.

See, when I look at the historical record I could not care less about the richer nobility and royalty. Because their lives could not be further removed from normal society at the time. And especially I do not really care about the politics in terms of wars and aliances and such. Because it tells us fairly little about what LIFE at the time actually looked like.

No, the stuff I find interesting is the letters send by normal people - and stuff like grafitti. Maybe diaries, we still have access too. Or one interesting source I found for the middle ages: A collection of jokes a French monk wrote down over the course of years.

Because this is the kind of source that reflects the life of normal folks a lot better than whatever political drama some duke or king or bishop was involved in.

And in those sources you will find... that people are actually fairly open in talking about queerness. Heck, we even have sources in this regard that talk about specific sexual acts. Going so far that through this we have at least some vague ideas about kink at the time (though that really is a topic on which the historical record is super light).

In fact we have sources of this sort going back to the ancient times, even. Which is also why we know that the Romans in general were a lot more put off by queerness than people in the early and high medieval times. (Mind you, this did not stop the Romans from having gay sex, they were just a lot more scandalized by it!)

Of course, this is nothing that people are taught in school. Heck, you can manage to study history and still be ignorant of this, because this is not the type of sources a lot of history is concerned with or was concerned with for the longest time. Recently this is shifting a bit - but shifts tend to be slow.

So, yes, we know that queerness was definitely something that existed in the middle ages. Yes, the time was still very heteronormative - but it was clearly also less scandalous about queerness than either the Romans or the folks in the Rennaissance.

"You're such a loser." Clair said next to me laughing, I jumped a bit. "You fucking startled me, ass." She just winked at me before grabbing my phone reading over the messages.

"I might become totally obsessed with you, bro you're love for this boy is so noticeable blind people might even see it." Laughed Clair as she threw me the phone back.

"Tell him to meet up with you tonight, we're almost done rehearsing." She pointed at the clock, wiping her sweat off of her forehead, my eyes followed her finger and yeah, it was 5.

Before I could say anything my phone went off.

"Womanizer"

A sudden urge to off myself appeared out of no where as Clair started moaning in my ear when I picked up.

"Damn, not even gonna show me how you're making her moan like that. That's even harsh for you, Y/n/n."

Ah, he just called me Y/n/n.

"I can make you moan like that too if you want me to-" oops.

My eyes widened as I quickly hung up, I threw my phone behind me onto the clothing from Adam and Ben and jumped up.

"I did not just say that."

"Oh yeah, you did."

Suddenly Clair phone started ringing, "Unknown number, I wonder who it could be." She said while smirking, she picked up the phone and held it to her ear to hear the other line.

"Oh hey, Tom. You wanna talk to Y/n/n?" She giggled out before handing me the phone, I tried to give her the phone back but the damage was done.

"Mhm?"

"Got too embarrassed baby?" I could hear the smugness off of his lips.

"I was just joking."

"Yeah sure, baby. Well? Wanna go on that date tonight maybe? I've some stuff planned." He said, the softness of his voice actually surprised me, but we gotta focus. We must stay focused.

"Sure! Does around seven sound good? And what type of clothes should I wear?" I mindlessly played with the strings of my sweatpants, waiting for him to respond.

"Just something casual, shit gotta bounce babe." We said our goodbyes, i hung up and put my hand over my mouth.

Before I could progress what just happened Clair jumped up and hugged me, "you're going on a date with Tom Kaulitz!" She said excitedly grabbing my hands and jumping up and down.

"You're going on a date with him?" Adam said walking on, bruh. "Yeah." I said smiling dryly at him, I went over to the side of the room to grab my bag.

But as I went to walk passed Adam he grabbed a tight hold off of my arm, "Keep your band members in mind, he's not worth it." He grunted through his teeth.

I pulled my arm out of his grip, I poked my finger in his chest; "Stop acting like my boyfriend, you're my friend, my leader but not my boyfriend. Keep talking to me like this and see what happens." I said sternly, his baffled face was worth millions as I nodded, "Glad that's clear now." I said before walking off to our apartment.

After a shower, finding a comfy but nice outfit and putting some make up on I was finally done. The thought of going on a date with Tom send some butterflies through my stomach.

Ring.

Ah shit.

I quickly grabbed one of my shoulder bags and threw it on before walking to the front door. I unlocked the door with my key and peaked from the side of the door.

"Wow hey." He said smirking, he looked me up and down, his eyes following over my body, any curve? He would find them.

Oh shit I forgot my deodorant; "Wanna come in for a bit? I forgot something in my room." He just nodded and stepped in, he put off his shoes making me smile, European behavior.

"Wanna see my room?" I asked, tripping over some of my words, "Yo, Y/n/n you really do wanna make me-" I quickly slapped my hand over his mouth making his eyes widen for a short time.

Before I could tell him to stop talking about it his finger tips gently caressed over the skin of my lower back as he has done so many times by now. But never does it get any less effective.

I let my hand fall from his mouth before looking down, his fingers slowly went over to my chin, guiding me to look at him once again.

"What are you so nervous for?" He whispered, his eyes flickered over at my lips, "You make me nervous." I uttered out. He smiled, placing his hand onto my cheek.

Without thinking I leaned into his touch, feeling more save then I've ever felt. "You make me nervous too, Y/n/n." I haven't noticed I had closed my eyes from the comfort of his touch, slowly I opened my eyes and noticed he was extremely close.

His minty breath his my face as he smiled at me, "Let me kiss you?"

ok i gotta ask how fucking strong are javier's hair genes. like. what kind of genetic lottery are we talking here.

because. either it's a lot like blonde hair in that both parents have to have the same hair color to pass it down and is therefore a pretty rare color, which would explain why he's the only person we see in tged that has that hair color.

or it's like red hair, in that very few people have the gene but it's dominant over certain other colors (according to what i read), meaning you can have only one parent with that hair color but as long as the other parent has a less dominant color it'll be mostly likely passed down to the child. which would explain how on the holy hell rakiel (and pretty sure the asrahans too) got to have javier's silver hair despite being 300 years down the line.

i am definitely leaning more towards the second theory, because otherwise it makes no sense why silver hair is both a rare color but still able to be passed down generations down the line. it would also mean that javier's silver hair genes are stronger than alicia's red hair genes.

actually let's talk about alicia's red hair genes. because what the fuck is this.

let's ignore how fucking adorable charlotte is for a second i know it's hard but focus this is important.

how in all that is logical did she turn out to be blonde. this makes no sense. suho's dark brown hair genes should by all accounts have been dominant over alicia's. he's korean he almost certainly doesn't carry the genes to produce a blond kid and even if he did red is still dominant over blond, so if anything charlotte should've been a redhead like her mother. or, y'know, have brown hair and eyes like her father. as should've been logical.

but okay. okay. let's say that alicia was a fluke and carried mostly blond genes (not unusual in a vaguely european setting) and by some reason suho did too (way more unusual for a korean guy but not impossible). fine, then charlotte is a blonde now. let's just. let's leave it at that.

it's still a fucking miracle that rakiel got to have javier's silver hair.

listen. let's make a hierarchy here. we know for a fact that in this universe most people also have brown and dark hair the same way we do irl so presumably dark hair genes are still dominant over all other colors. if we follow the same logic then it goes brown -> red -> blonde in the dominant escale. and i propose silver is less dominant than brown but around the same as red. like there's always your exceptions but it mostly follows that rule.

because otherwise you would have way more silver haired people running around and that's clearly not the case.

so let's pretend charlotte's hair color makes a modicum of sense and she has mostly blonde genes. she would then have to marry another light haired person and have a light haired child who could then marry a silver haired descendant of javier that could pass on the dominant silver hair gene onto the magentano family. and then every single heir to the throne would've have to marry only people who were blond and/or carried enough light haired genes for the silver hair to be the dominant gene, at least for enough generations to get to rakiel who gets the silver hair.

like. fucking miracle.

and that's not even getting into the fact that javier married silurian who has brown hair but at least is light enough that we can assume she probably has enough light hair genes for the silver hair to have a chance at coming on top. at least in the novel that is.

SO. here's my proposal.

i believe javier's silver hair is rare, probably more so than red hair, and the reason it isn't as common is because it's a less dominant gene than brown which is the most common hair color. but it hasn't gone out of complete existence because it's more dominant than blonde, which is a more common hair color to have despite being the less dominant gene overall. javier is probably the result of his parents both being silver haired or one of them having silver hair and the other being either blond or redheaded, but most likely the former just for probability's sake.

he then went on to marry silurian, who has light brown hair and who we don't know what color of hair her parents had (i am not acknowledging the webcomic, that is not count namaran he doesn't even simp for lloyd-) so we can probably assume at least one of them was blond, maybe even both and she just happened to receive a brown hair gene from her grandparents. so she has enough blond genes for javier's silver hair to pass down their children who then go on to marry only light-haired people and have silver haired descendants, one of which marries into the magentano family, specifically to the heir to the throne who is presumably also light-haired.

and so the silver hair gene is in the magentano family now too. after that i'm not too sure how it goes, i would like to see asterion and theodore first before assuming anything, but i'm almost certain asterion must also have silver hair which would mean one of his parents must be light-haired themselves. and i would love to see rakiel's mom too.

i don't think silver hair could do the same as red hair does, in that sometimes a parent with brown hair goes onto having a redheaded child. mostly because the way that works is that (i think) the parents are themselves redheaded but because eumelanin (how dark hair is) is expressed more in hair than the phenomelanin (red pigment) their hair gets so dark any of the reddish hue is masked by a stronger brown or black pigment.

which obviously wouldn't work with silver hair. or maybe it would and we just haven't seen it, maybe it manifests as a ashy brown or a dark grey, maybe some people are born with silver streaks on their hair and then when they have children with a light-haired partner their child gets full silver hair. i changed my mind that's a fun option actually.

either way! i am fascinated by the way silver hair works in this universe can you tell

More Planet Zoo! :D (Sorry not sorry. LOL)

This is a WIP entry gate/area that I built for the sandbox-mode zoo that I'm starting that will be dedicated (mostly) to endangered and critically-endangered animals from around the world, including the modded animals I've downloaded that can't be used in franchise mode.

More babble and a couple more pictures behind the cut...

I want this zoo to be primarily a breeding-program zoo for releasing animals to the wild. I want to really focus on the genetics aspect of the game to breed the best animals possible to release to the wild, starting with the sort of lousy animals you get from the sandbox-mode "market."

I also want the habitats to have barriers that are as natural-looking (or actually natural; i.e., water barriers) as possible. And I want to have as many cohabitating animals as I can manage, to make habitats that are more realistic. But of course it will have to have visitors, too, so it will have stuff for them. (Gotta make the monies somehow! :D ) That's the plan. We'll see how well I can execute it. LOL

The zoo itself is going to be located in a grassland biome located either in North America or Australia. I haven't decided yet. I'm sort of leaning toward Australia mostly because it's warmer than the North American grassland location would be, and that just makes things easier for most of the animals I want to use...except that I want a herd of bison and also some animals that live in the Himalayas (like snow leopards), so it might end up in North America, anyway, and I'll just have to make accommodations for the warmer-climate animals. But, I built this in a temperate European biome because that's what I thought I was going to do at first. LOL (It's OK, though; I can just save it as a blueprint and then plop it in any zoo I want.)

This will eventually have guest spawners (in the form of buses in a parking lot, I think), so I'll delete the standard entry building that every zoo comes with by default and use this instead.

Initially, I was going to make the glass-enclosed part larger and a habitat, (for lemurs), but then I realized that the guests would stand inside the entry where there's a big window like so...

...to gawp at whatever animal I put in it and thus clog up the entry. So I scrapped that I idea. I might get rid of that interior window and rework things a bit, though. Maybe keep it small and put tamarins (modded animals) in it instead, since they're small, and then add an outdoor area with maybe overhead tunneling they can climb around in and that are integrated with arbors over the paths, and...Well, we'll see. LOL

Anyway, I also built "covers" with path lights and planters to go over the plain small gravel paths I'm going to use, so that they'll look more interesting. They look like this:

I made them in 4m, 6m, and 8m widths -- the path widths that I always use -- with and without planters, and saved each kind as blueprints. I'm going to keep all the main outdoor paths in this zoo squared-off with right-angle intersections, no winding paths, so I can just plop these on top of the paths as I build the actual zoo. I think they look pretty nice, if I do say so myself. LOL

When I think of her I always get a talented woman vibe. I think she must dancer, sometimes I get "Backup K-Pop Dancer" vibes. She's really talented and naturally talented. She fights and works hard to get whatever she wants, a determined hardworker person. She doesn't seem to be THAT spiritual though, I feel that she's more interested in other things than in spirituality, such as music, dance, reading books, studying and researching anything she has her focus on and want to know more about it, etc.

She has a very strong energy, you can feel the energy and her presence really clearly. Her energy is very sweet and kind, she herself is very sweet and kind I guess🩷

She's very very stylish just like her man(Hobi), at the same time I think she likes to wear floral dresses, I think that she also likes to wear red, black or silver hot short dresses(Especially when she wants more attention), she naturally catch people's attention and eyes. I also think that she likes wearing those black necklaces sometimes, and other silver necklaces too.

These feel just like her idk🥺🖤

When I think of her I imagine her having a curvy body, I didn't really thought about thighs but I think it is a bit thick or muscular and toned. Waist is defined and I imagine her having good shoulders and attractive collarbones as well. I think she has very dark hair, probably black, not dark brown. Also it is straight and very shiny. For eyes I think she may have siren/cat/fox eyes, I sometimes imagine green, sometimes imagine brown, be it dark or light, I think that green eyes fits her more, when I imagine her, green eyes fits her more in my mind. I got a feeling she may have some specific and unique moles in her face(Probably cheeks?). I think she has medium to big lips, full and round lips, red lipstick really fits her. She's tall, above 1,67 I guess. Skin is white and very bright, clear and smooth, not pale white but she isn't tanned at all as well. Full eyebrows and very very long straight hair.

Thought a little about things while being semi offline. And I've decided I'll quit Tumblr indefinitely. I haven't missed this website one bit, I felt anxious whenever I thought about getting back and couldn't really do it.

Truth to be told, I despise the community climate here. More often than not, I feel like I'm in a highschool lunch room or something. Everything is kind of clique'y. Every other day there's some personal drama on dash and it's just not for me. Maybe it's a cultural thing and most of the people on dash are just the "typical" bubbly american and my european ass has a hard time being bubbly for the sake of trying to make friends.

On top of that, I want to focus more on my physical as well as my mental health. My glucose readings are already much better than they were in November, and I've lost almost 50lbs since then too, and I don't think sitting on tumblr and pressing F5 for new pretty fanart is going to help me in that endeavor in the long run.

I'll probably sit around on twitter a little more as I don't feel like it's as social interaction driven as this hellsite. Can just drop my art there when I do draw and then dip without feeling nearly anxious about it. Honestly, I think I could do without twitter too, but alas, I gotta make a little bit of money somehow, so I might as well just sit there.

Was fun while it lasted. I won't delete the account or my old one, maybe I feel like coming back one day.

Have you ever worked on the L'Anse aux Meadows site, or done any research/reading on Vinland?

I'm especially wondering your thoughts as it implies that European settlement (in Canada at least) predates the British and French colonies.

"Finland? ... Mr. Timo never had overseas colonies. You could try n' argue that Mr. Jan and Mr. Björn had hands in my raising with Nieuw-Nederland and Nya Sverige. But those were founded after Arthur's denizens founded Jamestown, with those two colonies being chartered in 1614 and founded in 1638, respectively. An' there's so much more I could say about 'em, but then we'd be ignorin' the fact that even Mr. Antonio's people were consistently here in what would become me way, way before Lord Father and Francis. St. Augustine, Florida, was founded in 1565, and that was after several failed Spanish attempts in Florida and the East Coast. That earliest attempt was San Miguel de Guadalupe in 1526, in what'd become South Carolina in the modern day.

Alright, so I’ve got this plan for an anthology style Zelda horror series specifically based on some background details about the primary antagonist of BotW that really intrigued me and felt like something I could build a bigger horror-themed mythos out of. I’m making progress on the very first story and I think I like where it’s going.

I’m mostly sick of horror-themed Content for the series just being Ben Drowned, riffs on “Ooh, wasn’t Majora’s Mask too spooky and mature for the kiddos,” and “Top 10 Enemies in Ocarina of Time That Made 8yo Me Pee My Pants In Terror.” Like, yeah, the Redeads and Dead Hand freaked me out, too, but at some point you’ve gotta expand your horizons and come up with new things to be spooked by.

Like…there’s so much going on with Clammy Gan in the background that you can’t help but think things could’ve gotten way more fucked up if he wasn’t presented as a generic world-destroying apocalyptic event, particularly if he was operating at more than 10% brain capacity and wasn’t dealing with a nonstop Princess-induced tummy ache. Particularly after Elden Ring showed how to introduce various strains of subtle background cosmic horror upon a besieged, generically medieval European location while tying it up in a story about court politics, imperialism, and the most dysfunctional family ever. Something about the human intersecting with the eldritch/divine, and the two becoming enmeshed and hideously corrupting each other without losing those relatable, down-to-earth personal elements that made both the Demigods and their mortal subjects so intriguing.

This isn’t going to be a linear chapter-by-chapter story. It’s going to be an anthology with vaguely interconnected plot threads and maybe the occasional recurring character beyond The Horrific Centerpiece Himself, but at least initially the focus will be more about exploring various vaguely interconnected ideas and different genres of horror than having a huge, overarching story with Deep Lore. This is an experiment, after all.

god yesterday i was so excited and motivated to play toontown and this update is pretty awesome, i love the new animations and the new cogs but most of it is basically ONLY a new coat of paint and theres nothing new to do, aside from beating up some of the new cogs to get them added to my cog schticker book. so i kinda lose motivation about it really, REALLY quickly.

i am already dismotivated and tired in general today, i got better sleep than last night and i dont know how i even functioned yesterday. so my lack of motivation and my shift of focus of Want To Play Other Game Despite Hyperfixation (minecraft and stardew valley on my 'wanna play at least a bit today' itches) is explained this way

but man. without friends i don't feel like checking most of i out - and a lot of my friends from my club already did so, without me, while i was asleep because of timezones.

(if any of u read this its not your fault im pissed at myself for being the one [well, now we have 2] europeans in our club)

so i dunno. i still gotta digest this update more, but realizing it added basically no new gameplay dismotivates me greatly. it was needed especially with some quality of life things like better tasks for clubs, emoting in a cog suit, cleaner animations (and quicker animations, too).

but holy hell there's nothing *new* to do the novelty will die off very quickly. it's just an april toons wait for me again. good update in terms of quality, i'd say.

but honestly? overhyped. i may be wrong though. bu whatever, it's my opinion and i am feeling pessimistic today. this doesn't mean i don't like the update, i do like it and it excites me. but urgh. okay. check out new things and log off and its the same. but i get it. volounteer team. they're not gonna add any big things yet. got hopes up.

mmm i've just been negative with staff or other reasons so i suppose my naturally harsher criticism stems from that. but again i still have very big respect for the work they do and i myself would not be able to do these things. but as someone who has like 133 laff and all they have left to do is graham(had task for almost year, cant get friendgroup to first time with me), prestter (skipping), oclo and maxing clo and ceo as the grindy things (and some drops, like mistys drops. how did i get all dave drops before misty.) theres so little to do like a lot of my enjoyment comes from playing with friends. and timezones are a thing. if you have lower motivation good luck getting shit done here

ugh still i cant overstate how dearly i love this game, im hyperfixated on it for a reason. and im not demanding theres more content NOW. it takes lots of time to develop. but as i keep privately yapping for Hours. staff needs better communication and pr and less of this arg shit. builds hype and then what we get is a new coat of paint

is it a good one? yes!!! does it give me new shit to do? not really. aside from wanting to draw the new cogs and new misty design.

ugh. am i being too negative? i may be. i dunno. feels odd to ramble about this knowing full well there's at least like 3 staff members who know me. maybe not on this account but, yknow.

I just wanted to say !!! because I'm also transracial (asuan adopted by white europeans) and I've gotten SO tired of people associating "transracial" with racist white people who think they can just choose to be another race. So it's just really nice to see someone else who's actually transracial talking about it. I know it's not the focus of your blog but yeah, it means a lot. And you've helped me a lot with understanding psychosis, both mine and others' too. This turned into a long winded way of saying thanks for all you do on this blog, so thanks for all you do on this blog!

as an excuse to talk a little more about being transracial (specifically, indigenous canadian/Metis & transracial)...

i am not fully indigenous, i should add. i'm Metis (mixed.) because my dad's birth records were destroyed/didnt include any information on his parents and lineage (as were all of his indigenous siblings', he was born in '68 when wiping out indigenous people was Very A Thing) i have no way to reconnect with the indigenous side of my family. in fact, all we know about our indigenous side is that they lived in Saucer Bay, Ontario. i'm actually the one who found out we're Anishinaabe, and even then, Anishinaabe is a collective of all the different peoples who live in southern ontario, and there's no way for me to find out exactly where we come from. my aunt (who he found in his 20s or 30s?) has done some research but she didn't get very far either.

my dad was crazy white-washed, especially because his parents were like 40 or 50 when they adopted him, so he basically skipped a generation of parenting and is a boomer (he is literally Gen-X, but everyone who knows him agrees he doesn't act like it.) AKA, he's super fucking racist and completely rejects being indigenous. he has no interest whatsoever in reconnecting with his indigenous family.

this is all to say: because i pass so well as white, was raised white, and my dad considers himself white, even if i knew my indigenous family... i would struggle to feel okay about reconnecting with them. i would feel appropriative, gross and like i don't belong. i want to, and i also feel like if i don't, im contributing to the erasure of my own peoples' history, and i'm betraying my ancestors; contributing to the oppression that got me here in the first place. but i still just can't feel okay about it. it can be hard watching indigenous people on the internet talk about their cultures, especially Anishinaabe people. i've heard a lot of indigenous folks on the internet say that people like me ARE native, and we have a right to reconnect with them, but i just... i dont think theyre talking about me. i probably wont ever reconnect with them, even if given the opportunity. is this internalized racism? would it even be internalized? i dont know.

I Think I'm Dating a Fae, Chapter 2

March 5

Dear Diary,

Out of all my friends, Keisha is the most open-minded about mythology and other fantastical stuff like the fae, so I asked her out to lunch for a chat. When I told her what I thought about Sol, she looked at me like I was crazy. Not a great sign, but I wasn’t deterred! It wasn’t entirely a lecture about me going too far with my “mythology obsession,” either. She asked some pretty good questions, and that was helpful for my research.

“First of all,” she asked. “If Sol’s a fae, why doesn’t he look like one? His ears aren’t pointy, he’s kind of short for a guy but not for a human, and he doesn’t have wings or faery dust.” Plus, and I’m adding this part, Sol’s black. Like, Black American black. He isn’t as dark as I am, but he’s pretty close. I’ve never heard of a dark-skinned fae, much less a Black fae. In all the stories, they’re from Ireland and Wales and Germany – Europe, in other words. Not the U.S. It just wouldn’t work, geographically speaking.

Sol told me he’s ADOS, like me. But, that means…there’s probably some European strain of something in his ancestry, right? Could there be some fae blood, or whatever-magic-creature blood, from four hundred some odd years back? Throwbacks exist. I mean, it’s magic! At this point, anything goes, right?

Okay, after some extra research on faeries’ appearances, I found this from a website on Irish fae:

“Good neighbors are well known to use magic to change their forms so they may walk amongst humans without fear. They may take the form of black dogs, or deer, or even human beings. It is not known how long they can hold these forms, but there are more than a few stories of those who only realized that the man or woman they married was a good neighbors, many years after half-fae children had been born and grown into their faery features.”

So yeah. That’s terrifying – great neighbors, sure. Just tricking people and having half-magic spawn – no! Wait wait wait. Wait a second! If Sol really is a fae, then these are his people. If this is their culture, I can’t just start saying hateful things…but tricking someone into thinking you’re human and then having sex with them, starting a family even, feels like a Zeus move, if I’m being honest….

Okay, focus! One thing at a time or else I’ll go crazy!

For now, the appearance thing. Fae can look like whatever they want since they can shape shift, and there’s apparently no time limit. So, Sol doesn’t have to look any particular way to be a fae. His height, ears, skin, all of it could just be shapeshifting or a glamour, which is kind of like…a costume? A magic costume, yeah. One that makes them look different but doesn’t actually change their bodies.

Some fae have wings, and some don’t, so Sol could have wings underneath a glamour. But he’s never acted like his wings were caught in a door or something, and when I hug him from behind he doesn’t act like it hurts, and I never feel any wings, so it’s probably not that. With shape shifting, the wings would actually disappear. Either Sol doesn’t have wings at all or he’s shape shifted them away.

Horrifying implications aside, the next thing Keisha asked me about was about the personality thing. Most sources say that faeries are tricksters and love pranks so much that they will actually kill people just to have a laugh (which… is kind of insane, right? Like, wow, how did we get Tinker Bell from that, Disney?).

Thankfully, this doesn’t fit Sol at all. Sol actally doesn’t like pranks. He almost murdered Justice for putting Saran Wrap on the toilet that one time. I’m pretty sure she’s only alive because she’s my sister. Gotta make sure to call in that favor at some point. Anyway, Sol isn’t a mischief lover.

I don’t think that bars him from being a a fae, though. It’s silly to think that literally every member of the species would behave the same way and have the same hobbies, right? Everyone’s different, and Sol does fit a few other traits fae seem to share. He has that wanderlust, always jumping from place to place, and he drifts from hobby to hobby and group to group easily enough, fitting in just fine with almost any clique he meets.

For example, last week we were partying at the club with a few friends and he eventually got tired of dancing. I watched him chat up this random biker gang over the course of an hour (and he doesn’t even know how to ride a motorcycle) and now apparently they’re all friends! They took him on a ride all over the city just a few days ago and everything.

Then, the next morning, he took the kids and me to church and had a long, friendly chat with the pastor and elders after service in the pastor’s office. They all came out smiling and chatting like it went well, and Pastor eve came up to me and put his hand on my shoulder and said, “You found yourself a good man, Cecil.”

He doesn’t know the half of it.

And then Sol went to an impromptu DnD thing at the public library and came back talking about how he wanted to continue the campaign over a video chat because everyone there was “so nice,” but that he can’t because doesn’t have the time! It’s absolutely crazy.

So yeah. Not a prankster, but he has all sorts of other hobbies, is charismatic, and fits into any group he wants to easily. And that’s kinda like a fae, right? Wandering all over just looking for a good time, making friends on the way, planting flowers and trees and frolicking in lakes or whatever he does when he’s traveling abroad.

But you know…if Sol actually is a fae, or maybe something like a fae…wouldn’t at least part of his family be fae-adjacent, too? I’ve met them all; Sol took me to various events and lunches with them years ago and we all stay in loose contact now, but they don’t really seem like fae. Well, no, let me rephrase.

What I mean is that Sol stands out from his family. He can blend in with anyone, at least on the surface, but with his family? He acts around them how he acts around me: like a weirdo. And they seem to accept him like that without toomuch of an issue. Seems like a “happy to see you’re still alive, now goodbye!” type of relationship with most of them.

And they’re really normal people otherwise. Normal hobbies, and experiences, and everything. A few are entitled, and most were really sweet, and a some gossip entirely too much. They’re just regular people. Sol’s the only odd man out.

Why are they so different from him? Or rather, him from them? He can’t be the only fae-adjacent in the line. Genetically, that doesn’t make sense.

Ugh, this is going nowhere. His family’s never going to say anything if they do know, so I can’t ask them, even if he’s the only one. If Sol is a fae, he probably won’t tell me, either. And if he’s something else, well, I can’t comb every single mythology story and legend that ever was!

I need a drink. Better yet, I need a cup of Sol’s tea. I don’t remember the name – it’s something long and complicated in French – but it’s good. I’m sure he won’t mind. And if he does…well, it’s his fault for being so goddam confusing!
