i'll be honest, i love italy, i love italian, i love italians, and i would love to use it as a setting more often if it suits a fic - in a heartbeat. having been to a fair few areas now (Puglia you're next on my list bby i promise) there are such beautiful places i would love to use as backdrops, even for short works. a little romantic trip to Verona, a wet weekend in Venice, a sea swim in the marina in Naples across the bay from Vesuvius...

i think it helps with writing when you've been somewhere and can weave in personal experiences or even memories. i'd like to do it more in general, though i find my mind is not programmed easily for fluffy encounters haha. but i have fond memories of italy and i'd love to use them more as inspiration.

(what i'm trying to say is i suffered climbing up Vesuvius after a morning spent walking Herculaneum and i want someone - toni, south italy, whoever! - to feel my pain!)

anywho. as for historical periods... i dunno. as a student i only ever studied Risorgimento onwards, and very politically-based. i think the Renascimento in Florence would be interesting. i really loved visiting Davide and Venere haha (my duomo experience on the other hand...). and i'd love to learn more of Venice as a kingdom. Roman Italy i guess is a must, though i've already dabbled. otherwise, i'm not too sure....

though, when in Rome... i could send toni to walk around the Colosseum and Roman Forum omgggg... let him walk around and have his thoughts... a lil' character study...

i am never getting over leaving the Colosseum and finding a public water dispenser with sparkling water.......

OH THE TEMPLES! there were temples in the Forum! there's the Tempio di Antonino (e Faustina, ahem) and the Tempio di Romolo just across the way! i remember my mind working overtime with that nugget. the romespa was stalking me tirelessly on that part of my trip. and i'm yet to be cured!

anyways i hope that has in some way answered your question(?). i've not put much thought into the italies as characters themselves - i don't feel the same kind of draw to them that i feel with toni - but it would be curious to. i'd love to do more research into Venice during the times of the Ottoman Empire, in its sort of golden era. i'm sure i've seen a documentary or two, and i may even have a book... hmmm...

so many little threads to follow and not enough hours in the day, sadly, to do so :')

despite my many gripes with the movie, i really, really like the scenes between anthony and turpin. the first one where he's accusing the poor puppy boy of gandering is creepy and i hate every second of it. the second one though that's incredibly brief where anthony runs up to him after turpin is sending johanna to fogg's, he almost threatens to kill him. he doesn't finish the sentence. turpin does it for him. anthony turns and runs after the carriage johanna is in instead.

My gif making endeavours got halted by the fact i connected the dots and there's a big chance Misto is magically turning on the projector Munk is standing on at the beginning of pekes and pollicles, per Munk's request

I say that as Munk signals someone just before he starts the story, and while Misto is cut out by the camera, he is standing on the side Munk is signalling to, when he appears back he is holding his arm in a purposeful fashion, the projector turns of a bit after he drops his arm and it doesn't turn on again in that song, and Misto uses magic to control other set pieces at least 3 other times in the show, and he probably magically sets of the sparkles as the rumpus cat appears

Also it would be the only time in Warsaw, besides Mr M, where Munk not only doesn't miss Misto using magic, but he asks for it

WELCOME TO MY TWISTED WORLD. i really tried to keep tugger as cis guys i really did. but the thrall of a visually transgender tugger was too much to ignore. i already explained a lot of his design choices in my first posted drawing of it but like... blauhh... thigh garter, heart, golden whiskers/lashes. they are there. i also made his makeup a wee more theatrical w/ white on the chin to visually separate him from partridges tugger

i also decided to base his fur more on his obc design. like. terrence mann tugger. platinum blond spotted mane and head fur and such. i think it looks really good

naming in Cats is a difficult matter so funny because so many names are indicative of the nature of the cat themself. Grizabella is an excellent example: 'griz' meaning 'grizzled' and 'bella' which traditionally means 'beautiful/beauty', aka 'grizzled beauty'. Bustopher is half 'bust' which the meaning of is obvious given his everything and the 'opher' is most likely derived from Christopher, which adds a dignified, traditional vibe to the name that matches his personality.

You also have names like Pouncival, half Percival which is a name that I think most people would associate with a young man, and then 'pounce' added in there to compliment his mischievous and active personality. Mistoffelees is derived from Mephistopheles, a demon from German folklore, though Misto's name has quirkier spelling to give him the otherworldly yet less threatening vibe of his demonic counterpart (which also suits his horn-like curled ears and sometimes cryptid-y vibes in some productions). There's also Bombalurina-- 'Bomb/Bomba' is perhaps derived from 'bombacious' or a similar term to probably describe her general l‌asciviousness and s‌ensuality, and then 'balurina' at the end is an alternate spelling of 'ballerina' to indicate her grace and maybe her performative nature.

And then you have names like Munkustrap. Which... Just kind of exist.

What is the most important Cats platonic relationship in your opinion?

Grizabella and Victoria is a SHOCKINGLY underrated platonic relationship, you'd think that because of their moment together it would be more talked about, but i rarely see people discuss it? I know it's a small moment, but I have SO many thoughts about the two of them:

Bustopher, not wanting to let one of his oldest friends starve, invites her in a few times to his club

while Grizabella is there, getting a meal and getting warm, she meets Victoria (and Misto, but we're talking about Vicki!)

Victoria is absolutely in awe of the Glamour Cat, and starts asking her all kinds of questions, and Grizabella, after a brief moment fo frozen surprise, responds to her.

The next time Grizabella visits, Victoria greets her with a bright "Aunty Bella!"

when Victoria and Misto meet the Jellicles for the first time, and Victoria meets Munkustrap and Tugger, she immediately knows who they are, because she heard her Aunty Bella talking about them, and she sees that they're in just as much pain as Grizabella

so when Grizabella arrives at the Ball, Victoria's over the moon. She wants to approach her, to pull her towards her sons and mate to get them to reconcile, but she also knows that Grizabella needs to approach them on her own

but when she's finally able to touch her aunty, to nuzzle her for what she knows will be the last time, and see her get that final moment with her sons and her mate, Victoria can't stop smiling

Hi Cats Tumblr People,

So I heard you like pics.

Please bear with me (AND TEACH ME) how Tumblr works/if I'm doing it wrong! I'm literally the "How do you do, fellow young people?" meme. Our Etsy is linked (unless I messed that up!) Right now it's bare (LOT of work and VERY old photos in the banner) but we'll be posting some cossies soon that are ready to retire. Some of our prices sadly will have to rise (we undercharge honestly for the amount of time put into them... we just LOVE making them). Anyway...

These are our original designs. We have taken inspiration from different productions, from the US tour to Gothenburg to Australia to Japan, less UK because it gets the most attention and we like COLOR! but this is all us. Our goal is to a) have characters be recognizable and b) make swing unitards in palates that could pass as at least 3 characters for emergency. When our rentals go out, swing unitards go with them, and ultimately it's the director who decides what makes the final cut (so a less yellow Demeter for example--but we LOVE that one).

If we ever do a production of Cats with Chaz, you'll notice one in Red, White, and some Black (but mostly Red and White, with fan ears, that is a design David created and is Chaz's FAVORITE design of all time. Any time he does a show, if we're hired, that costume goes. Usually Electra, but any ensemble/swing kitty and can cover for Sillabub or in a pinch Bombalurina. Yuka wore it at Interlakes before she did Victoria on the last US Tour! You might notice an Admetus in tans and GREEN undertones--that was my design he loved. We also did the purple twins (which was vetoed and I said, "Okay" then did it anyway because I knew he'd love it, which he did!), and REBA Gumbie Tap Suit was completely mine (everyone thought I was out of my MIND when I started making it! Even David! Then the shoulder pads came, and the belt, and tail, and BEDAZZLING!!! SO MANY RHINESTONES!!!!) Our Misto coat lights up but we still have a lot to learn about arduino since we'd eventually like to make it blink to music. The Misto coat is also created to fit a multitude of sizes, basically the theatre using their department for alterations since we make use of stretch fabric. I've known Bronson for almost as long as Chaz (he even designed my author website!!!) so when I saw him cast, I showed him his costume (a much, much browner/redder Gus than most see--I was serious about liking color) and let him choose between two coats. He said he wanted pants and we went, "NO! PANTLESS PRODUCTION!" because we thought he was joking! We didn't realize... HE REALLY WANTED PANTS!!!! SORRY BRONSON! So shout out to Wichita for making him pants! LOL!

There is a HUGE joke about Tumble thirsting for Tugger more than the girls so you'll notice that with the Tugger ABOUUUOUOUOUOUOUOUUUUUUUUUT THAT.

We also saw some comments about casting in general and some confusion/questions about different dancers doing different parts (Alonzo vs Plato). Would anyone be interested in learning more about the casting process in general and things that directors/choreographers need to take into consideration? Please note, I will not discuss ANY performers we work with. Ever. All are extraordinary and these are tough calls that aren't easy to make and based on other factors, including the ensemble at large, and sometimes huge changes are made.
