Molly Russell: Social Media a Factor in 14-Year-Old’s Death

In 2017, Molly Russell, a typical 14-year-old British teenager with a seemingly ‘normal’ life took her own life. After an investigation into her death, the coroner deemed her suicide a product of an overload of access to harmful images, videos and text sound on Pinterest and Instagram that glamourized and promoted #self-harm and #suicide to deal with the pain of her deppression.

Note: This blog is a compilation of messages to our #DearMolly, to my inner Molly and to all the 'Mollies' out there searching for an answer. It will include songs, words of encouragement, videos, pictures, memes, and any other means of exploring what it means to feel suicidal and hopeless…and how to cope.

Indian twitter is so frigging toxic. Ugh. It should be banned in India. The only thing on there all day, every day is hate against Muslims. Just non stop hate being drip fed on there.

Twitter, Facebook only do something against hate speech and vitriol in Western countries. And that’s the problem. They don’t care if these platforms are used for instigating lynch mobs against minorities in third world countries.

Am I still dreaming...or am I awakening?

If I'm awakening, I'd rather go back to dreaming. I do realize that the process of awakening is difficult and can be traumatic...but I'm still searching for that place where I belong, enveloped in the hospitality that a compassionate and loving human society SHOULD devote itself to. I look around and I see humans, but I don't see humanity. I look around, and I feel ashamed and lost to be one. I don't feel human. I don't even want to associate with humans anymore. I'm trying to raise a damn good one, but the mother is only one component of encouraging authenticity while teaching values and compassion. But every time I look or venture "out there" whether face-to-face or virtually, all I see is a giant shit show of deeply wounded animals at high alert, ready to fight. We all know that human society is ridiculously divisive to the point of never seen before proportions. But now...we can't even agree on how to agree.

We misread or misinterpret the words of others, and in the attempt of saving face or defending ourselves in front of an enemy or some beast that does not even exist...we attack. We now attack those who are on our sides, or speaking up to defend us, or further adding to our points. We attack.

There are no friends, colleagues, supporters anymore. There is only ME and THEM. This is NOT human-like! We are only backing ourselves up further into a very lonely corner.

I'm not supposed to care, right? I'm supposed to only care about myself and take care of my own problems, right? But I DO understand the profound importance of the collective consciousness and I'm scared to death. I am only a tiny particle of that consciousness, and everyone else complete's the WE...the WHOLE. If one isn't well...then none of us are. And so, we cannot survive as one if we can't learn to take care of one another. No man left behind. Love thy neighbors, brothers and sisters, right?

I'm just so torn over the resistance and the distancing wedges widening the gap between humans. We weren't meant to live like this.

hey btw before you start being angry at the 10 year old sephora kids and the ipad kids, remember that we should feel bad for them. because the world has failed them. it is not these kids faults that the world is so focused on materialistic things and that their parents don't know how to talk to them. that is the fault of social media and bad parenting. i said what i said.

My older sister has this motivation quote in her Instagram "Just Keep Swimming" that really makes me angry. Its a quote from the Finding Nemo movie that has become a meme and a motivation to so many people but then there are those of us who so exhausted, that we could hardly move.

Don't get me wrong. I love my sister and she's great but she has no idea how much her toxic positivity hurts me more than it helps.

"Just keep swimming' she says any time I complain or mention that I feel exhausted. There are those, like my sister, who might love you but who will never understand your struggle...and that's alright.

When I feel the most deppressed and I get the urge to disappear I find that sometimes it does work to talk to someone. I know it's cliche but after my last attempt I started to see a therapist and she definately gets it more than anyone else.

When I told my therapist about how much I hate the "just keep swimming" mentality she told me something that stuck with me and that maybe will help. She said "when you deal with depression there are times when you feel completely drained of energy." She said "As much as your sister has good intentions, telling you to 'just keep swimming' and 'try harder' doesn't work. "

"What you need to do, "she said , "is take things slower...just like if you were in a stuck in a storm in the ocean swimming against the current. What you have to do is stay still and float."

Remmember, "You have to learn to float before you can swim."

It's hard to stay still and not wanna swim faster when we are in this dark storm to escape it. But fighting against it all is exhausting and sometimes it's best to stay still and let the water lead you. Before you drown, take your time and just float.

When the storm is at its worse just close your eyes and breathe and let go. You don't have to give up but for now, give in and rest. We will get through this storm, my #DearMolly

For anyone right now who feels like they're going insane... step outside of the chronically online Twitter fandom bubbles and see some normal opinions.

Seeing normal people react to this helped me remember that the fandom spaces are not accurate representations of reality. The attitudes in the MCYT community is especially extreme, chronically online, and performative. Twitter feeds off of escalation and negativity, the most hateful deranged opinions rise to the top. If you're like me and felt like your brain was getting pushed through a meat grinder, step away from social media, think through it on your own and get some normie opinions on it. It really helps you get some perspective.
