What made you ship it?

Half of it is me smashing 3 of my original favorite characters together and half of it is the fact that they met! canonically! At least Xiao Xingchen and Nie Mingjue did, and I'm obsessed with this interaction and I would pay so much money for a little more context of how it went.

On a more serious note, though, It's fantastic how these unrelated characters had their lives forever altered in such similar ways by the Jin sect taking an interest in Xue Yang. The story is full of parallels and the ones between those three are all very tragic and interesting.

From the miscommunication to the shattered souls and the fierce corpses, they feel tangled even if there's just the slightest intersection between their actual lives. And it's nice to look at them like this! c:

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

How compatible they are. I think Nie Mingjue is made of the same idealistic and earnest ambitions Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan are made of, he's just forced into a completely different setting.

SongXiao's entire way of living feels like Nie Mingjue's wildest secret dream. Roaming the world and fighting evil and helping people, no politics or scheming, no shady sect leaders... Is it too far fetched to imagine Mingjue would like something like that?

And, of course, I'm sure neither Xingchen or Song Lan would dream of having Mingjue's life, but I love that little nudge to the book interaction in CQL when they say they admire and trust Sect Leader Nie, despite not wanting to get even more involved with that mess.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

The ship itself is so unpopular! Is it unpopular to say Xiao Xingchen fucks nasty? Or maybe that SongXiao could use the protection of the Nie sect sometimes(?)

Pairings:

Wangxian. They invented love, it's fine!!!

Xiyao. They loved each other so much. :( and it went so badly and it wasn't their fault :(

Songxiao. i still can't think about them too much because it hurts me but the world would have been so much better if they'd gotten to live out their dreams :(

Characters:

Lan Wangji. Just. The man at the center of literally all the moments that gradually tipped me from bemused enjoyment of CQL to complete obsession. I love him so much. I want to look at his brain.

Jiang Cheng. The precise character archetype that I love most lol. A character who knows he's inadequate and can't do anything about it? Who knows he's the secondary character in someone else's story? Perfection.

Jin Guangyao. (puts him in a snow globe and shakes him up and watches him walk around) (chin on hand, dreamy sigh)

Do you daydream a lot before you write, or go for it as soon as the ideas strike?

Yes!! Daydreaming is the basis of all of my writing, which is why it is so self-indulgent, even the (relatively) angsty parts lol some fics i am almost reluctant to write as i love to revisit them a few times before "freezing them as is" in a fic, like my beloved hospital fic (*) i also tend to play around with my scenarios for longer fics, and test alternative options before every chapter. Like, how would things go if that little thing, or this other thing changed? What would the consequences be? And i try to do this until my scenario becomes unavoidable, until all the possible versions have been tested in daydreams and rejected. I won't pretend it's a hardship though lol

18. Do you enjoy creating OCs or do you prefer to stick solely to canon characters?

I don't exactly enjoy it but they are sometimes necessary and i try to flesh them out a little if i can lol

24. How do you choose whose POV to write in?

It kind of imposes itself on me to be honest lol some of my fics, especially the shorter ones, are only interesting from a certain point of view (this one or this one in particular) but there are quite a few that i feel would deserve to get both sides some day. I was extremely lucky to have my beloved @jockvillagersonly do me the honor of writing the hospital fic from Xiaoge's pov and their fic is a work of art <3 but i would really love to find the time and energy to write last year's exchange fic (my "plot twist, Xiaoge wasn't in the gate but in a coma", aka the best fic i have ever written imo!!) from Wu Xie's pov, because there are a couple of scenes that Xiaoge doesn't know about that i feel would reaaaally twist the knife in the wound if you know what i mean 😂

74. Do you have a fic you wish got a bit more love?

People really seem to like my qipao fics when they're really not my favorites lol i'm happy they're getting attention, though!! But some lesser appreciated personal favorites are:

-this year's exchange fic featuring PingXie working at a carnival haunted house which i LOVED writing and that no one seems to have read so far.... 😔

- this particular mini fic in Xiaoge's POV in which HJJ XG has an existential crisis about sharing a bed with the love of his life

- fics i wrote for other pairings and fandoms! like this gratuitously smutty one that i wrote for ChengYi from Under The Skin as a way to dip my toe into the fandom before dropping a longer fic (wink wink nudge nudge next wip in line), or my HeiHua chronic hanahaki exchange fic which has ALL the mutual pining one could dream of!!

- (and maybe my SongXiao post Yi city fix-it fic that's on hiatus until i can figure out how to finish it, because i'd really love to have opinions on it! Is it worth finishing? Any ideas plot wise/ any prompt/ anything people would like to read in it? Like, more smut, less smut, more angst (how lol we're at capacity here folks!) or less angst etc.)

What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? I think it's a tie between my two Mo Xuanyu fics — but now my ink's blood red not black and The Door Won't Open — although Give a Comb, Take a Kiss and The River Styx is high and wide are both close thirds.

What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending? Like Guq, most of what I write tends to be short fluffy one-shots, so, like, most of them? But if I had to pick one, maybe this post-canon polyamorous triple drabble for Nirvana in Fire is it.

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the weirdest one you’ve written? I do! I've written several! I think the silliest is probably my Untamed/Me & AU crossover where the crossover is actually with Selkirk, the fake TV show that the Me & AU characters are into.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I do! It's usually pretty nonstandard in some way or another? Fierce corpses, eldritch or otherwise monstrous characters, ace & trans characters, kinky stuff, not much of a focus on penetrative sex for the most part (not that I haven't written penetrative sex, mind)

Do you respond to comments, why or why not? Yes, though not on any particular schedule. I will reply either right away or months later, and there's not any method to which it will be XD

Have you ever received hate on a fic? Only once but it was that Xiyao troll that was going around being an ass to everyone who writes even a smidge of non-negative xiyao, so it didn't really bug me. I've received some "well actually" style comments as well, which are more annoying.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? I fucking hope not! XD;;;

Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! And a poem, too!

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Ahaha I sure have! See above -- my most popular fics are all cowritten ones.

What’s your all time favourite ship to write for? Well, according to my AO3 stats, it's a tie between SongXiao and ChengQing (9 fics each), although WangXian and platonic Yunmeng Shuangjie are in second place (7 fics). I think WangXian suffers from the "background canonical ship" effect in my fics, though, for the most part. But honestly, I like a lotta weird lil rarepairs so the 151 fics I've posted up on AO3 so far are mostly all one-offs.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? But, After All, I Am A Wen my beloved 😭😭😭 I'm trying, I swear.

What are your writing strengths? I think I write good dialogue! I also think I'm pretty darn good at, like, interior character work? IDK how to phrase that. But, like, conveying shit about a character's psychology in a show-don't-tell sort of way. I hope.

What are your writing weaknesses? Finishing the damn thing. ;-; Also anything that involves choreographing bodies in space absolutely destroys me. Fight scenes, sex scenes, dance scenes... I struggle.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I like it if it's done smoothly! In my own writing it varies a lot how much I insert from languages other than English, and my reasoning is mostly about flow and tone.

What was the first fandom you wrote for? In a notebook never shared with anyone I think it was Irene Radford's Dragon Nimbus series, where I think I inserted a unicorn character? First thing I ever shared online was a Yugioh fic where I inserted a dragon shapeshifter character. (I have since removed it from the internet.)

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written? Uhhhhh. How can I possibly pick??? I like most of them! I still go back and reread a bunch of them for my own pleasure :)

YES my darling beloved songxiao yes...

Do I ship it: ABSOLUTELY! As I've said in another ask I absolutely adore yin yang couples LOL

What made me ship it: Honestly before they were even on screen, hearing that Xiao Xingchen gave Song Lan his very own eyes had me like "woaaahh... That's really romantic..." and then the story just kept proving me right over and over! They're a matching set who love each other so much it transcends life and death! Doesn't get better than that

Favorite things: Honestly, the aforementioned transcendental love. The fact Song Lan is still roaming this earth instead of just waiting to pass on after all he's been through just to be able to apologize and reassure Xiao Xingchen, the fact Xiao Xingchen would rather be dead than live with the knowledge he killed Song Lan. It's that devotion that veers into unhealthy but with the upside that they're people who love each other very much and would never intentionally hurt each other, and in fact would probably live a very fulfilling life together! And also of course the complementary aspects, Xiao Xingchen being a warm presence and Song Lan being a cold one, despite them both being kind; Xiao Xingchen laughing at everything and Song Lan laughing at Nothing etc

Unpopular opinion: I have a few! I don't think they're boring for starters, and I think people sometimes overlook them because tragedy isn't as popular or striking if it doesn't have some very overt toxicity. It's only boring if you're unimaginative tbh. There's plenty of drama and darkness in Songxiao and people have just pigeonholed it into a "pure, moral ship for antis" which is absurd. Get real. I also don't think it's fair to say they would've fallen apart eventually, first of all because someone deliberately and insistently ripped them apart, and second because they never did fall apart as proven by the end of the arc!

Stilton! I feel it would be a shame if MerMay passed us by without a prompt for your Mer!AU, so here's a question: how does Shuilan come about in this AU? Alternatively, how does the boat trip/family getaway go where they're heading down south to see (presumably) the Wen and Jin pods? OR do SongXiao et al appear in this AU? ... Turns out I could go on quite a bit, but in the interest of not hitting the character limit I'll stop there =D

After Wei Ying signals his return from the warm waters of the south, Lan Wangji scarcely eats or sleeps until he reunites with his family.

"A-Die has a surprise for you, Fuqin," Wen Yuan says cheerfully, as soon as he flops out of the sea at Jingyu Cove and transforms his tail into a pair of knobby-kneed legs. "Are you wearing swimming trunks?"

Regrettably, Lan Wangji is not wearing swimming trunks, mostly because he assumed that Wei Ying, A-Yuan, and Xiao-Yu would shift into their human forms and come up for dinner at the beach house. But having a merman for a husband and two merbabies for children has long since divested him of his dislike for cold water, so he strips down to his boxer shorts and wades in the direction of Xiao-Yu's pointing finger, picking his way through clumps of seaweed until the sandy seafloor drops away beneath him.

And there, glittering in the distance with something small clutched in his arms, is Wei Ying: floating in a brilliant arc of red light reflected from his tail, and trailed by a cloud of inky black hair. He is as beautiful as ever, even lovelier for the month that the Jiang pod's seasonal migration forced him to part from Lan Wangji, and Lan Wangji's heart swells at the sight of him until he wonders if it might actually burst.

Lan Wangji strikes out in a short, smooth freestyle (he's gotten much better at swimming since meeting Wei Ying, because even merbabies need a weather eye keeping watch over them at all times) and kicks off towards his husband, coasting to a halt at his side before they rise to the surface together for a cool, salty-tasting kiss.

"You taste like salmon again," he murmurs. "Were you hunting just now, beloved?"

"Yanli-jie is hunting for me," Wei Ying replies, with the sunlight in his eyes sparkling just the way it does on the horizon. "I can't hunt just now, you see. A-Yuan and I have too much to do."

Lan Wangji raises an eyebrow. "Oh?" He was under the impression that Wei Ying does most of the hunting for his family during the days he spends offshore, since merfolk from his birth pod are faster, stronger swimmers than most blood-related members of the Jiang family. "What has been keeping you busy, then?"

In answer, Wei Ying unwraps the long kelp leaf in his arms and shows Lan Wangji the warm, breathing thing bundled up inside it: a fat little bunch of wild black hair and marbled scales, like the colorful blotching on the bodies of ornamental carp. The stubby-finned tail is impossibly small, smaller than Xiao-Yu's was when Lan Wangji first met him, and his heart skips a beat in his chest; because the soft little bundle nestled against his husband’s chest is unmistakably a baby, so delicate and tiny that Lan Wangji can scarcely make out its pearly fingernails.

“Wei Ying?” he gasps, as the merbaby yawns and turns over onto its back. “Is it--the baby, did you...?”

“Someone left her behind,” Wei Ying sighs, with a sad little smile on his lips. “We haven’t been able to find out who she is, or where she came from. So she’s ours now, Lan Zhan!”

Lan Wangji bends closer and strokes the baby’s round cheek, holding back tears as she opens her eyes and blinks at him.

“She is perfect,” he says thickly. “Is it dangerous for her to be away from the water, Wei Ying? Is that why you did not come up to the beach?”

Wei Ying nods. “It would frighten her, so I thought she should meet you first! And look, Lan Zhan, she likes you!”

The baby’s dimpled fingers are wrapped around Lan Wangji’s thumb, holding it so tightly that his nail is starting to go blue, and he breathes out a soft, delighted laugh before pressing a kiss to her forehead.

“I like her very much, too,” he smiles, before taking his husband into his arms. “What should we name her, xingan?”

“A-Ling already chose a name! Do you want to hear it?”

“Mm, my love. Very much.”

“Her name is Shuilan,” Wei Ying smiles, uttering the name as if it were a pearl, rolling sweetly between his lips and out into the brisk morning air. “The lan is your favorite flower, and part of A-Ling’s courtesy name--fitting, isn’t it?”

“Then we will call her Wei, to prevent any confusion,” Lan Wangji decides. “A-Yuan is Wen Yuan, and A-Yu is Lan Yu. So this little one will be Wei Shuilan, and honor us both in her name.”

And then the world is swept away, lost in the comfort of his husband’s embrace as Wei Ying leans up to kiss him.

“I love you, my heart,” he whispers, when Wei Ying pulls away. “Endlessly.”

And I love you, Wei Ying replies, as the strength of his conviction fills the water like a song. I love you no matter how far I go, or how long we spend apart.

I have never loved anyone more, Lan Zhan, and I never will.

14. what's an au/non-canon scenario that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?  again, it IS canon, but it has to be jiang cheng making noise in the cloud recesses!! 

13. opinions on:

jiang cheng: my beloved!! a character type that is truly and utterly irresistible to me. was obsessed with him from the first moments of CQL.

jin guangyao: my OTHER BELOVED. i have said before that my experience of watching CQL was basically the experience of being lan xichen: i just loved this little guy and wanted so badly to trust him, and i was SO BETRAYED by the final episodes... then immediately spiraled into being obsessed with him

xue yang: not my fave! such are the mysterious ways of the blorbos. his ~i'm so craAAaAaaAazy~ energy just really sends me back to 2006 in a bad way, and i just can't muster a lot of empathy for his choices
