Buckinghamshire VS West Sussex
Buckinghamshire and West Sussex are both counties in England, and they have distinct characteristics. Here's a brief comparison of the two:
Location:
Buckinghamshire: Located in South East England, Buckinghamshire is close to London and is known for its picturesque countryside, historic towns, and proximity to the Chiltern Hills.
West Sussex: Situated in the South East of England as well, West Sussex is known for its diverse landscapes, including the South Downs National Park, beautiful coastline, and historic towns.
Countryside and Landscapes:
Buckinghamshire: Known for its rolling hills, the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the Thames Valley, Buckinghamshire offers a mix of rural and suburban landscapes.
West Sussex: Offers a diverse landscape with the South Downs, which is a range of chalk hills, as well as coastal areas along the English Channel.
Economy:
Buckinghamshire: The county has a strong economy, with a mix of industries including technology, healthcare, and finance. It is home to some affluent towns and has good transport links to London.
West Sussex: The economy in West Sussex is varied, with a focus on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. It also has commuter towns and is within reach of London.
Towns and Cities:
Buckinghamshire: Includes towns such as High Wycombe, Aylesbury, Olney and Milton Keynes. Milton Keynes is a new town known for its modern planning and development.
West Sussex: Chichester, Worthing Littlehampton, and Crawley are among the towns in West Sussex. Crawley is known for its proximity to Gatwick Airport.
Historical and Cultural Attractions:
Buckinghamshire: Boasts historical sites like Bletchley Park, the former World War II codebreaking centre, as well as historic houses like Waddesdon Manor.
West Sussex: Features attractions such as Chichester Cathedral, Arundel Castle, and the Weald and Downland Living Museum.
Transportation:
Buckinghamshire: Well-connected to London by road and rail, with the M40 motorway passing through and several train services.
West Sussex: Accessible by major roads, and Gatwick Airport, one of the busiest airports in the UK, is located in West Sussex.
Ultimately, the choice between Buckinghamshire and West Sussex depends on personal preferences, lifestyle, and specific needs. Both counties offer a mix of rural charm, historical attractions, and economic opportunities.

Devil's Dyke
Tumblr media
Location
Devil's Dyke is a 100 metre deep valley on the South Downs in Sussex in southern England, 5 miles north-west of Brighton. There is a National Trust car park right at the top, with wide views of the surrounding countryside. The Devil's Dyke Vintage Inn Pub, adjacent to the car park, is a great place to stop for lunch and is dog friendly. Driving there, you will pass through the hills of the south downs, An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Famous painter John Constable described the panorama from Devil’s Dyke as 'the grandest view in the world'.
Parking
Devil's Dyke car park is Pay & Display. £1.50 for 1 hour; £3 for up to 2 hours; £6 all day. National Trust members and Blue Badge holders park free. There are disabled parking spaces located at the entrance to the pub, and on the right as you enter the National Trust car park.

Accessibility
With the car park at the top of the hill, you get great views without needing to leave the car. The main view point is 20 metres from the car park and shares information on the surrounding area. The ground around the hill is bumpy so may not be suitable for all visitors.

There are multiple places to park during your journey; my personal favourite is along saddlescome Rd, just 5 minutes from the National Trust car park. There are a few spaces at the side of the road with a view of the hills.
This is a quiet location, with few other visitors. Walking a few metres down the hill, you will find a secluded bench with views over local farmland. This can be a great place to stop for lunch or a picnic. The path to the bench is uneven and bumpy, so it won't be accessible for all visitors, but it's only a few meters off the road so there's not a long walking distance.
Conclusion
Overall, Devils Dyke is a great place to visit, even for less able visitors, with its famous views and accessible parking. The drive through the hills offer a view of the countryside and can be a good place to stop on your way to Brighton or other seaside towns.

Seven Sisters & Friston Forest - South Downs National Park, England
Tumblr media
After our failed attempt yesterday, due to the weather, we decided to take a different approach to seeing the Seven Sisters. Doug found an 8-mile loop hike that started from the village of East Dean at a bus stop. The trail went out to the Seven Sisters and then looped back through the Friston Forest. We packed a few snacks and water, caught the bus to East Dean, and a few short minutes later, we found ourselves standing on the roadside in South Downs National Park. We pulled up the map and headed down the narrow road in the above picture. At the end of the lane, we found a small pub and picnic area off to the left. Up the hill from there we found the continuation of our trail.
Tumblr media
After a short walk up this tree-lined path, we emerged into a huge expanse of land and sky.
Tumblr media
WOW!! We finally got a view of the ocean - spectacular!
Tumblr media
New friends that we made along the way.
The hike along the coast was amazing. The day started out sunny and warm, with a steady wind in our face. However, at one point, a storm blew in and we got pelted with a bit of rain and some gale-force winds. Luckily, it only lasted a few minutes. Here are the photos from the Seven Sisters portion of our hike:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shortly after climbing up and over the hill in this picture, we turned inland, making our way over to the visitor center for the national park and the Friston Forest.
Tumblr media
I believe this is Birling Gap, there is a bridge across the river or at low tide you can walk across. This is where we headed inland on our loop hike.

Making our way toward the Friston Forest from Seven Sisters.

Looking back at Birling Gap and the Visitor Centre for South Downs NP (in the clump of trees), just after we climbed over the stone fence and made our way into the Friston Forest.

It was a nice walk through the trees, country lanes, and meadows on our way back to East Dean to catch the bus back to Eastbourne:

A few pictures of some of the plants we passed on our hike:

What an amazing day! This hike was definitely one of our favorite things that we have done on our trip. Of course, we finished the day off with an adult beverage at The Lamb pub in Eastbourne:

Cheers from Eastbourne!

South Downs National Park, England
Tumblr media
These iconic rolling green hills are part of a rich tapestry of landscapes on the South Downs, chalk hills which stretch across the coastal counties of south-east England. For centuries, grazing sheep have helped keep the turf short, creating one of the richest wildlife habitats in Europe. Wildflowers and different species of butterflies thrive on its chalk grassland, but these days this rare habitat covers only about 4% of the Downs, a decline that accelerated during World War II when much of it was ploughed to grow crops. The need to protect it, and to restore the Downs, was part of the reason the South Downs National Park was created in 2010 - the UK’s newest national park.
The national park covers a larger area than the hills of the South Downs and includes a huge variety of landscapes, from rare lowland heaths to ancient woodland, chalk streams and windswept cliffs. It’s not just home to rare species of plants and creatures - people have lived here for thousands of years, as evidenced by Iron Age fort remains, Neolithic flint mines and ancient monuments.

Rediscovering the Magic of Nature! (Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking to the south across the canyon and gorge with blue skies above at the Kneeling Camel View overlook in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward and capture that sweeping view with the Gunnison River slowly flowing by. The canyon and cliff walls would be all around with just a portion of the blue skies in the upper part of the image.

South Downs Way
A while ago I took a walk along a bit of the South Downs Way. Here are the photographs I took. #photography #southdowns #sussex
One of the things I love the most about our house is that, unless some bad weather has rolled in, you can see the South Downs National Park from our bedroom window. It often makes for some beautiful views. Although, as you’d expect given my history, it took us a little while to get out there and take a look. And of course, even longer to get round to posting them here. We parked up at Ditchling…
