Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas @solcaeruleus 🎉✨! I was chosen as your Secret Santa! U wished for an art based on your works, so I chose to illustrate one of my favorite scenes in your fic "Memories Most Painful" Perhaps it was not very festive of me to choose ur most gut-wrenching soul crashing angst fic (especially at the time when it was mostly all hurt and no comfort), but this quiet moment between them kept me in a chokehold for days on end, I couldn't think of anything else!^^ I hope you like it!

Something that bothers me in the worldbuilding of She-Ra is how Etheria doesn't feel like an actual planet

Every kingdom is like, miles alway from each other and the heroes can just walk to each one of them super easily. We never had an explanation on why there's some people who look animalistic while other look more human (i always assumed that the humans would be descendants from the first ones since Mara also looks very human, but since they all seemed to have left the planet i think that woudn't be possible)

And we don't really have a sense that the planet have multiple species. Like, we see that there's animalistic characters but there's never an explanation on what their species is, where they come from, etc. We never found out what is Double Trouble species, or Glimmer's, or those random goat characters that apear from time to time, it seems like they just wanted to make those characters...because!

The race thing is never explained in She-Ra, it feels a bit like the old Star Wars movies where they just made the aliens design without thinking on context, just because would make it looks cool. And it did, and we later found out where these guys come from, but we never have this with She-Ra

Also, everyone was kinda racist, they just call Rogelio "lizard guy" and the heroes seem to be disgusted at DT transformation

(And do they even have animals in Etheria? Or is kinda like pokemon where they mentioned an animal but that in the context of the show woudn't exist?)

this bothers me too. the worldbuilding is so lackluster, it hardly feels like a world at all. it feels like a 2d cutout of a planet. we never learn the difference between the cultures of each kingdom, because there seems to be no culture. and that's just realistic because culture and traditions are something that naturally comes about in a place where a bunch of people live.

i know i sound like a broken record but again, the reason atla's world seemed so real was because each nation had its respective culture and traditions, you could plainly see the difference between earth kingdom civilians and water tribe citizens, or fire nation locals and the air nomads. culture was, in fact, an important part of the narrative because it was the source of aang's biggest dilemma.

in spop, etheria is like a hologram or a metaverse kind of thing. apart from the heroes and villains, no one else matters. we never see the perspective of the civilians. and this is especially important because there's a fucking war going on. that doesn't just affect heroes and villains, it affects everyone. people were dying but that isn't really focused on because the crew was more interested in writing teenage conflicts and forced romances.

anyway, i digress. like you said, i wish we had gotten more explanation as to why some etherians were more animalistic and some weren't. they don't seem to be divided into groups and there's no explanation to why they are like that. its just for the ~ a e s t h e t i c ~. i'm not sure if the rogelio and dt thing counts as "racism" since they're different species, not different races. but it does feel a little iffy when put into perspective.

they do have animals in etheria btw, we see horses (swiftwind was literally a normal horse that was turned into a pegasus later) and i'm pretty sure there were aquatic creatures too? there was also melog though he's not a "normal" animal by any means.

The idea of SPOP Hordak being "ineffectual"

Or (relatively) weak or some other variant.

This is an interesting idea, I think misconception, mostly among SPOP's critics (well more among specifically those who could be exactly called "anti-fans" or "haters"), but also a number of fans.

The issue is, there are many arguments against it.

First, Hordak stated he conquered "galaxies" in Horde Prime name. That's galaxies in plural, it suggesting at least 2, very possibly much more.

After getting stuck on Etheria, Hordak with no resources, proceeded to create the strongest military force on the planet, and fairly quickly carved one of the mightiest countries on it, forcing most of the remaining countries (latter all) to ally against the Horde Empire. He also dealt a defeat to the old Alliance/Rebellion, so significant that it efficiently disbanded. Though it it is possible these battles also weakened the Horde forces, but still.

Horde's conquest slowing down, seems to be largely due to his increasing health issues, and him dividing his time to try counter them and/or contact Horde Prime. It also seems Shadow Weaver is kinda behind the Horde not proceeding more with their conquest, possibly even intentionally doing this to proceed with her own strongly implied plans of "saving" Etheria, releasing magic, and putting the planet in more competent hands (ie her own). Hordak did though notice Shadow Weaver's ineffectually (though hard to say if disloyalty, but it's possible), hence so easily deciding to both replace her, and send her to Beast Island.

After Hordak, as stated by Catra rediscovered his warrior spirit, him being involved and leading battles directly was one of major reasons Horde nearly conquered the whole Etheria in season 4 before Glimmer's counter-offensive.

Hodak's biological degeneration is also a factor that should be discussed. As he consistently fought against it largely through pure will. While it did leave him weakened (up to the spaces between his the ulna and the radius bones in his arms being visible), he did make up for it, especially latter on with Entrapta's help.

Catra "defeating" Hordak at the start of season 4, is also not exactly an anti-feat for him - outside of Catra figuring Hordak's weakness, the situation was meant to parallel how Hordak punished Catra in season 2, by sucking/changing the atmosphere.

With Hordak and Catra, their real/proper fight is also interesting. Catra during the fight was on her defensive, and clearly putting in all of her experience (including even recent, from her fight with Glimmer), just to survive. While she did kinda win, it was only "kinda". Hordak was knocked out, while both at this point, were fighting to kill each other.

Catra was also in a comparably bad shape after this fight, seemingly even a bit worse than Hordak. As Catra, after her adrenaline wore of, had at start difficulties standing up and walking at all:

Hordak in turn, despite a 700 ton piece of metal falling on his head, then crushing him, just got up after regaining consciousness, moved/lifted the giant metal claw crushing him, and was preparing to kill Glimmer (and Catra if he found her).

He also got an explosive directly in his face, and was just temporarily blinded, and was still able to continue:

It's also notable that as Catra ripped out the First One crystal, it either means Hordak installed a secondary power source, or that he was operating here on pure determination (mixed with Power of Hate).

Nate Stevenson also wrote Hordak did, or would kill Catra during the fight, but Catra's ability to have 9 lives (or perhaps more likely to avoid certain death 8 times) saved her. It's hard to tell if he was serious though.

This fight is also relevant, as Catra is one of the deadliest fighters in SPOP, portrayed consistently a challenge or even match for Adora as She-Ra. It's also notable that Glimmer, despite defeating Catra in a fair fight (and being one of the only to do it aside from Adora and the Guardian of the Heart), was hesitant to engage Hordak along with his forces.

This might be a controversial take, but I think it does make SPOP Hordak kinda/maybe comparable to 2002 Hordak in fighting capabilities in terms of their universes. 2002 Hordak kicked King Hiss a*s, and put up a great fight against King Grayskull, nearly wining, and still killing him, but he had an army of Horde Troopers, 3 Horde Wraiths and Grizzlor, Mantenna and Leech to help him out.

While King Grayskull had one Battle Lion to help:

Not to trow shade at 2002 Hordak, I also like him, just noting why I think they are comparable.

It's also important to point out Hordak's force of will. He was, as opposed to most, double mind controlled by being reconnected to the Hive Mind, and then also "slimed":

And he still broke out of this (first partly when discovering the First One crystal Entrapta installed in his armor, then after Horde Prime made the fatal mistake and ordered him to kill Entrapta), and killed big bro Prime (or at least his body):

And only got controlled after Horde Prime's spirit/consciousness fully transferred into him.

With that Hordak seems to a pretty badass military leader and fighter in this series. Or at least that's my opinion.

i was just thinking about the fact that there are a few toxic sapphic ships i've encountered in fandom spaces and it made me realize why c//a is one of the worse.

it's because one: the source material tries to gaslight everyone into thinking the ship isn't toxic

and two: the fandom always end up more toxic than the ship itself.

my reasons for this is simple. i used to watch a show called legacies with a ship, p*sie who is seen as toxic within canon (like they were not romantized within canon AT ALL.), but the fandom for the ship didn't see it that way, making the shippers super toxic when it was pointed out. and tried to gaslight anyone who believed it was toxic that it wasn't or that it wasn't as toxic as something else within the show! so it can't be that bad! not realizing two things can be toxic at once. and the fact the show acknowledged that they were toxic, made it entertaining to watch. but it was easier to point out all the issues within canon that was never retconned so they couldn't exactly disagree with it, just try to change the subject to make the ship looks better.

whereas since spop's canon says that c//a isn't toxic by season 5, the shippers takes that and runs with it. because it can't be toxic if canon says so!!! (which .... no, actually. it called romanticizing) and it creates a more toxic environment for critical thinking because of the fact the canon gives the shippers something of an out. and gives them this reason to argue and be worse than the ship itself, because canon says so! so anyone who disagress with canon is the toxic one! when we're just going by the first four seasons (and even some of season five) that shows, no, they are actually really toxic even outside of their sister dynamic. and i wished the show embraced it, instead of trying to write it off. because i rather that than this loop of seeing people not having any crictical thinking skills believing that canon is "perfect" and if you disagree, you're obviously wrong since everything that happened before season five no longer matters and context no longer exist, and it's exhauting.

c//a shippers would actually be more tolerable if they just say "yes, this is toxic but i still like it" then trying to justify themselves on how it's Good and Healthy ship.

Kingdom of Mystacor/e was suspended between two mountains high above a river. The “Mystacore Meridian” was a theoretical line separating Mystacor from Greenvale, but the Horde cut down some of the trees and cut Greenvale off from Casta’s protection. Filmation In the UK POP Comic Magazines Casta kept the Pool of Power (see Pool of Vision below) which allowed her to scry all over Etheria, and an endless library of magic. In MOTUC Mystacor contained a hidden magic archive, which Shadow Weaver led a raid on to enhance her powers.

Tomb Rock is a big old rock in the Crimson Waste. Huntara imprisoned Glimmer here before she learned the truth about the Horde Filmation

Islands

Beast Island, including Beast Warriors’ village, which had a water supply problem Filmation, Golden POP Books. Sight of a Horde prison

The Mystic Isle was said to be the storehouse for the greatest treasure of the First Ones, which they sank below the sea to protect its treasure. For a single day, the island would rise again. When it rose (because of course it did) it had a citadel and giant busts of First Ones (who appear human here). The citadel was filled with art depicting love, beauty, freedom, and truth Filmation

The Valley of the Lost’s library contained innumerable books on every conceivable subject and from every imaginable era. The inner library, which had not been visited in centuries, contained the most ancient tombs. The books lay in uncategorized piles, making locating a specific volume a nearly impossible challenge.
