A woman shows you all kinds of containers that to and don't work for raising little transplants inside of your home! And she's right and I agree with her.

Read "Suki, Alone". Liked it in general. But can they please, please hire someone who knows both the show's actual events and how to follow through on a character arc? Because guys. Guys. That comic is not implying about Suki what they meant it to be implying, and all because of literally one line.
So like. From a writer's standpoint:
What they meant to do: show Suki as a community-oriented person who cares for her people, and believes in everyone succeeding together.
As opposed to (spoilers): the thief girl they set her up in contrast with, who's pretty upfront and consistent on primarily looking out for herself. She betrays Suki for one (1) corn chip to improve her own life at the prison, no surprise.
But the problem is: they give Suki an inspirational line to the effect of "we're all working together and we'll all break out together"
You know
The thing she does not do in the show
So if both the show and this comic are canon, then instead of setting up a compare/contrast with the thief girl, they've just set up a comparison. One were Suki is arguably worse, because she's been leading a significant number of prisoners on with her "we'll all fight and win our freedom together!" business, only to straight up cut them out of the escape loop and abandon them, whereas the thief is only leading Suki on in the sense that Suki keeps telling her what it's morally correct to think and confuses snide replies with agreement
My dudes. My fellow writers. You people actually being paid for this. There were so many ways to fix those awful implications against our girl's character, the simplest of which would be to not include that line. Or they could have, you know, made it canon compliant with what actually happens in the show, so that this comic doesn't set Suki up as a betrayer instead of a community builder. Like... just send all her good prison buddies off to other prisons in the wake of the warden finding out they're colluding. Have it timed to be right before the next new prisoners arrive, thus setting it immediately before the Boiling Rock episodes, so Suki didn't have anyone left in the prison she'd want to take with her on a breakout. For bonus points, include a page or two of her and her Kyoshi warriors opening up the cell of one of her prison friends post-war, thus implying she's tracking down and actually fulfilling her promises. Maybe even show her doing the same with thief girl, who was established as being imprisoned on false charges anyway, and also showing that Suki is A) the bigger person, and B) willing to acknowledge her own role in mistakes (because I cannot emphasize enough how much thief girl was not hiding her own priorities, and it was Suki who approached HER with all this, not the girl ever doing anything special to weasel her way in) (this would also open up an opportunity for paralleling Suki's earlier in-comic mistake of not listening to one of her friend's very valid thoughts and feeling, which lead to the girl leaving their island alone pre-canon; a "seeing people as they are, not what you want them to be" moment)
Anyway yeah enjoyable enough for a quick read but another one for the "this can't be canon or the characters are So Much Worse than they were in the actual show" pile
At least Aang didn't promise to murder anyone in this one

Physical media is still very important.
In 2021, I deactivated all of my social media. I had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, and I found myself constantly triggered all of the time. I had been off of it for about two years, and when I finally returned, I saw so many updates from my friends, mutual friends, acquaintances, family, etc. that I had NO clue about— they were engaged, in new relationships, married, moved to new cities, graduated, having babies, and were in so many new eras that I had no clue about. They had my number, so they could have told me, and it really sucked that I didn’t get to see those exciting things in their life.
That stuck with me, and I started thinking about my family that was not on social media, namely my grandmother, who’s 91 years old, and how she may not see what is happening in the lives of her kids and grandchildren who do not live near her.
I call her often, and she used to always ask about my boyfriend and my cat and she wanted to see photos. I would send them to my aunt, and I would ask for her to show her, and sometimes she’s forget. That made me so sad that my grandma can be so disconnected from us.
So, I decided to get a camera and start taking as many photos as I could and mail them to her. I show her everything— my plants, maybe a meal I made, my cat, me while being very sleep deprived, etc.
I think she deserves to see what my life looks like, and I have fun showing her! This brings me to the point that physical media is important to have records of what life looks like for you.
Physical media is important to continue to expand the access that others have to you. I think this is relevant especially because we get so used to the prevalence of digital media and social media and we think it is connecting ourselves to the world, and to an extent it really is! But it does isolate those who aren’t on social media whether they prefer not to be on it, whether they do not have social media access due to censorship, whether they do not have social media access because they cannot afford the tools to have it, whether they do not have social media access because they cannot have access to media period (i.e. military duties), whether they do not have access to social media because it is beyond their time.
If we really think about it, we really push older people from access to us and the world in favor of something more technologically advanced, and I think that is unfair too. Accessibility means everyone can and should access it (to me at least).
Anyway, I hope this serves as a reminder or at least inspiration to continue to add physical media to how you share your lives— whether that is through journaling, letters, or even printed imagery that you can mail out.
In the meantime, I’m going to mail these to my grandmother so she can see my pretty plants, my pretty cat, and my pretty life.

I got a lot done! Managed to get one box completely weeded. The fava beans were still alive under all the weeds, so i picked some of the bigger ones (and the ones that broke off during weeding) to give to my stepmom, since she's the reason I planted them :>

Everyone's talking about chicken math but let's talk about plant math lol
For houseplants it's like, oh look at this little fern that's on sale for 5$! Wow! And then you bring it home, and it looks pretty, and isn't that spot on that windowsill just a little bare? And then you end up scrounging the clearance aisles months later and you already have twenty plants and where on earth is this one going to go? You don't know but you can't leave it there look how lonely it is!
For gardening plants in my experience it starts off with a normal garden the first year, then you buy a seed packet since it's cheaper than one three dollar start, and then you start like 50 tomato plants because that's whats in the packet but who cares about consequences you're having fun! 45 plants sprout and you're panicking trying to find people to take these plants. You end up with 25 left, you somehow find spots for all 25 tomato plants and you really only needed two but where's the rest of your starts going, specifically all those peppers and herbs? Who knows but by gosh you will find a space, you'll feel bad tossing any. Next thing you know you're yard/patio is a mini farm

Our 2024 Garden: starting tomatoes, peppers and milkweed (video)
Okay, so I’m really a week early for this, but I decided to start more seeds, anyhow! It was also an excuse to finally get my video making software up and running on the new computer. That was far more complicated than it should have been, but once it was all set up, everything went well. Plus, PBC makes a cameo appearance. This time, I started the three varieties of short season bell peppers…

Honest (Single year) Review of the Burpee Superseed seedling trays
Tumblr media
Hey all! So I have been my seedlings in this tray for a little over a month, and I have some thoughts so far.
First of all, I like the ease of use that comes with it. The cells are labeled with a letter/number grid, and it comes with a blank list that you can fill in accordingly. It made it pretty easy to remember exactly what I planted where, without having to use stakes to label them. There's also a silicon base to the cells, so you can pop out seedlings pretty easily when it's time to plant.
Now I got the 36 cell tray, but it also came in 16 and 8 cell trays. This was definitely a mistake, and this is why:

A lot of my babies are currently root bound in their small cells. So that is causing some watering issues and my tomatoes have pretty much halted their growth because of it. So in a couple days I am going to be transplanting all of my seedlings into their home pots, or into transport pots for my family. Hopefully I can rescue them and give them some more time to grow before summer time.
