Comrade Sisters: Women of the Black Panther Party by @ericka_huggins and @stephenshames
This powerful photo book highlights the amazing women of the party that often have been overlooked, but by all means was necessary to the sustainability and community of the party.
Foreword by Angela Davis: "This stunning collection of historical photographs, complimented by contemporary conversations with women members of the Black Panther Party, reminds us that women were literally the heart of this new political approach to Black freedom."
“I am a human rights activist, poet, educator, Black Panther Party leader and former political prisoner. For the past 36 years I’ve lectured throughout the United States and internationally. My life experiences have enabled me to speak personally and honestly on issues relating to the physical and emotional well-being of women, children and youth, whole being education, the incarceration of men and women of color, and the role of the spiritual practice in sustaining activism and promoting social change.” - Ericka Huggins
“The Panthers were never a black nationalist organization… They formed alliances with many black writers and activists and their whole legal team was white. They were not out to get white people, as the American government insisted. They were a revolutionary organization who worked with anybody they felt was sincerely trying to change the system to benefit poor people and create a more just society.” - Stephen Shames
Many of us have heard these three words: Black Panther Party, but they few know the story of the backbone of the Party: the women.
It's estimated that six out of ten Panther Party members were women. While these remarkable women of all ages and diverse backgrounds were regularly making headlines agitating, protesting, and organizing, off-stage these same women were building communities and enacting social justice, providing food, housing, education, healthcare, and more.

Stephen Shames “My images reflect the feral vitality and hope of these young men. The interplay between good and evil, violence and love, chaos and family, is the theme, but this is not documentation. There is no story line. There is only a feeling.” — Stephen Shames, Photographer. For over two decades, Stephen Shames injected himself into the streets of the South Bronx and made pictures about the kind of life that he saw there. Unflinching yet intimate, straight-shooting yet sensitive.Today the genre of street photography is a well-populated one. But what sets apart Shames' volume is the degree of intimacy which he achieved. While there are many, many pictures of vertical figures — posed portraits, roof jumpers, informal group shots on corners, in bars and in backrooms — it is the horizontal figures which best embody the photographer's ability to incorporate himself deep into the inner life of the neighbourhood. Mothers lie on beds with their babies, in the universal position of maternal care. Kids sprawl out on uncovered mattresses, trying to grab some rest (three to a bed). A boy lies on his belly in the street, reaching into the gutter, another boy lies sprawled on his back on the sidewalk, felled by a flurry of punches. Two young teens share a crude sexual drawing; one masturbates. Young lovers (many of them still teens, as well) lie coiled in bed together. This work became ‘Bronx Boys’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #stephenshames #photographer #filmmaker #documentaryfilmmaker #producer #blackpanthers #bobbyseale #streetphotographer #bronxboys #socialissues #instigator #photojournalist (at United States of America) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7VqG72AWHi/?igshid=m6w62u961qvn

It’s essential to know and remember our history. We honor those who came before us, fought this same fight, who laid the groundwork and cleared a path. Our mutual aid organizing is inspired by so many but especially the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, the Catholic Worker Movement founded by the anarchist Dorothy Day, and Food Not Bombs. Photo 1-4: participants in the Black Panther survival programs in Palo Alto CA. 📸 @stephenshames 1972. From 1968-1975 the Panthers used donated food to make sure that children in their communities had enough to eat before school in dozens of cities around the country. This led the federal government to do the same, making their program unnecessary. They also regularly offered free groceries to the community.
Photo 5-6: Dorothy Day at the Kansas City Catholic Worker house, July 1974. 📸 Albert de Zutter. Though arthritis made standing difficult she can be seen sitting on a stool in a stand off with armed sheriffs while supporting a United Farm Workers picket in Lamont, California, August 1973. 📸 Bob Fitch. The Catholic Worker Movement has fought militarism and offered mutual aid to those in need for decades! They operate farms as well as houses of hospitality around the country. Photo 7-8: August 15, 1988, San Francisco Polices shut down a food share organized by Food Not Bombs at Golden Gate Park and arrested nine volunteers for not having a permit. One had been applied for but authorities didn’t want gatherings of hungry people seen. 📸 Greg Garr. Media attention to the conflict helped Food Not Bombs spread into a worldwide movement! @lesfoodnotbombs cooks at the Catholic Worker Joseph House and shares in Tompkins Sq. Park Sundays. June 19th marks the anniversary of the day in 1865 in which federal orders of emancipation were announced and enforced in Texas, one of the last states to emancipate slaves, and consider them free. Juneteenth has widely become a celebration of emancipation, Black joy, and Black resistance.  Although recognition of this holiday is welcomed, we understand the work that has to be done to perpetuate freedom to its resolve.  Photography 📸 Top - Black Joy & Resistance by @waheedpix Adreinne Waheed Bottom- Power to the People - The Black Panthers by Stephen Shames @stephenshames  _____________________________________ #LAUisLAW #JUNETEENTH #LAUCelebrates #LAU1985 #VPNPT #LAUPhi (at Florida Atlantic University) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQTd1pXBbZ0/?utm_medium=tumblr

BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL I was always attracted by the history of the black panthers, perseverance, attitude, convictions, ideology, but one thing that was the most striking to me, the combination of ideology and style, more than anything the style, turned into something super catchy, any black guy (including whites too) wanted to go with beret on his side, leather jacket, sunglasses and a rifle in hand down the street (covered by the law), was something that they appropriated and they made it part of them in a clear way, THIS IS US, and it is not something lightly, BLACK POWER, as the same phrase says, "there is no ethics without aesthetics", and it is not that they took that style because yes, if not they understood that to have firmness and consolidate they had to have something that defines them 100%, that they recognize them at first sight, they were proud of being black.
