Native American tribes from Michigan, Wisconsin and Ontario have come together to call for an end to the Line 5 pipeline.

The Enbridge Line 5 crude oil pipeline, first constructed in 1953, stretches from Wisconsin through 645 miles of Michigan and ends in Sarnia, Ontario. Part of the pipeline travels underwater through the Straits of Mackinac.

In recent years, the pipeline's continued operation has become a source of controversy. Many tribal nations and communities claim that the pipeline goes through their traditional territories. The Straits area in particular is considered a place of significant cultural and historical importance to many native groups, including the Anishinaabe. According to tribal leaders, the pipeline poses a major and direct threat to the ecosystems along its path.

“The Straits of Mackinac are [...] sacred from both a cultural and historical perspective in the formation of the Anishinaabe people,” said Austin Lowes, chairperson of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, in a statement. “Protecting the Straits is also a matter of the utmost environmental and economic importance — both to our people and the state of Michigan.”

Tribal leaders and other environmental groups have publicly opposed the pipeline for many years and have called for the pipeline to be shut down.

Supporters of the pipeline point out that it transports 540,000 barrels of light crude oil and natural gas liquids through Line 5 on a daily basis. [...]

In an effort to address safety concerns, Enbridge has proposed an underwater tunnel to house the portion of Line 5 that runs under the Straits of Mackinac. [...] Critics of the tunnel project say no oil should be transported through the Straits at all, as a spill could have a devastating impact on more than 700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. [...]

Previous attempts to shut down the pipeline have been stopped through various means, mostly the 1977 Transit Pipeline Treaty between Canada and the United States.

The latest attempt saw 51 tribal organizations from Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario submit a report to the United Nations Human Rights Council. This report, dated April 4, claims that the Government of Canada is violating the human rights of Indigenous peoples through its continuous support for Line 5.

The report was submitted to be considered during Canada's upcoming Universal Periodic Review, conducted by the United Nations. As a United Nations member state, Canada is required to be evaluated for its human rights record on a regular basis.

Canada's Universal Periodic Review will take place this year on Nov. 6-17.

The 51 different tribal organizations that signed the report include: The Anishinabek Nation, which represents 39 First Nations throughout the province of Ontario, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Bay Mills Indian Community, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians, Hannahville Indian Community, Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi, Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

i've seen some people express concern that the spn/destiel fandom is dying out. i've had that feeling myself! but SO MANY cool projects have started (or continued), even two years after the finale, and i want to highlight some of them for you!

(sorry for so many links in replies. trying to make sure this post shows up in the tags. stay cool, tumblr.)

@amoreprofoundcon is a fanworks & creators-focused destiel convention (via zoom!) created by fans. the first con was back in march 2022, with a second scheduled for the destiel holiday weekend (nov 5-6)!!

@mixtapebookclub is a podcast focused on destiel fanfiction, featuring a different topic and author each episode!!

the destiel fan favs survey is still going strong (link to the ao3 collection in the replies) and you can find more info at @destielficarchive!! the ao3 collection currently includes 2782 works, submitted by fans over the five years the survey has run.

@destieltropecollection also does a yearly survey where writers can submit their own works that fit a list of various tropes. i love to see writers reccing their own stories!!!

the profound bond discord server (@profoundnet & link to discord in replies) has a gazillion members and is still hoppin'. the tumblr also reblogs members' stories, art, and other creations.

WELCOME TO THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OBJECT HEAD ZINE!

In celebration, the 2024's edition will be a Grab Bag - draw whatever object head you like (so long as it fits the guidelines, see below). In Lieu of a theme, all submissions MUST HAVE ASHLEY (the megaphone mascot) in the piece! Feel free to make him as large or as small as you want in the composition. He can be hanging out with your characters or he can be on a flyer, just so long he's somewhere in the picture! Reference of all his outfits can be found here. But don't feel like you're restricted to his previous outfits. Feel free to dress him up in anything you'd like. Content is also free for whatever! You want to date the lil man? Go for it! You want to tease or go on the attack? Also fine! Ignore him and let him live his life? Sure thing.

ALL submissions will be accepted as long as they fit guidelines and each person has a limit of up to 3 submissions. Submit your pieces to the zine email objectheadzine(@)hotmail(.)com along with the email/website/name you’d like to be credited as. (Feel free to omit emails if that is more comfortable). When you’ve finished your piece(s), you are allowed to post them to your blogs as long as you link back to the zine blog! This will be a DIGITAL ZINE ONLY and will be available free upon completion (donation optional).

The guidelines are as follow:

Illustration-quality works in either digital or traditional mediums. Both colour and b/w acceptable; background required. *BG can be as simple as a pattern or colour block! Avoid utilizing a camera to submit your images, please use a scanner. 

The default size will be 6″x9″, 300 dpi (1800px x 2700px) but feel free to go larger or smaller, so long as it follows those proportions. Please work in a vertical format.

For consistency’s sake, keep faces to a minimum (You can have eye(s) or you can have mouth(s) but don’t have both in a humanoid arrangement.)

Ashley, the megaphone head mascot, must be included in your piece. He can be small in the picture or a large factor but he must be included. When submitting, if he is not obvious, please point him out to me. References are found here.

Please go for original characters (or fanart of your friend’s characters) and not so much established object heads (e.g. the popcorn and soda heads from No More).

If you want to include humans, that’s fine as well but keep the ratio of people to object heads 1:1.

Content should be at most PG-13: Romance is fine but after-hours business should not be implied, Blood is fine but no gore. In the end, use your common sense.

Feel free to draw a comic or just an illustration! A comic counts as one submission.

Some facts about Ashley that could help with your piece: He's 5'2", he's of Chinese nationality, he's a TV show host, he's a bubbly, happy-go-lucky kind of guy and he has a Samyoed dog named Cotton!

Note that if a submission does not meet the above guidelines, I will either reject your submission or suggest improvements that would help your piece fulfill them. Psst, Hey. Hey you. You like suggesting things, right?

WELL DO WE HAVE A OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU!

As you are all aware, the last few balls we've ran had prompts that trolls could dress to match. This year, we're putting the power of the prompts in YOUR hands, and we're going to allow users to suggest their own prompts for the community to vote on!

We've opened up a google form to collect theme ideas from the community, and it's open ended with no need to log in. You will be able to see the prompts submitted after you input yours, and there's also a dud option so you can view the results without having to actually suggest anything yourself.

Previous year prompts was 'Crystallize' theme of 2021, and then 'Art of War' of 2022. Your prompts do not have to match the theme of previous years, but we do request that we not tread across old ground.

We will take suggestions from Oct 25th until Oct 30th at 7PM. We will then process the suggestions and create a poll to vote on them to be released Oct 31st, and then close the poll on Nov 3rd at 7PM.

Prompt Names must be short and sweet. We're not naming things like Panic at the Disco names songs.

Obviously no offensive suggestions or suggestions referencing offensive scenarios, such as war crimes or closed cultural practices, or weirdly specific 'japanese high school' prompts. I will hunt you for sport if you start coming in with dogwhistles. This is a no fucking brainer rule.

Please include a brief description of your prompt and what it might entail, perhaps even an art style. This ideally should be a sentence long, not a paragraph. If you don't feel confident in your summarization skills but have a moodboard, we can assist in writing a brief description if you leave your prompt name and no further summary. Example: Early Spring would be Florals, plant-like, art nouveau. Art of War is fashionable armor, historical art, 'when you have to swordfight a rival general at 6 but have a ball function at 6:30.

Make your prompt clear. Inside jokes or subtle themes might be fun in theory, but they don't make for interesting, creative, or easy to interpret and bend prompts. Be mindful of the fact that not everyone will follow this prompt or may interpret it much differently than you would expect.

Similar prompts may be condensed at the end. Three different suggestions for cyberpunk will just be merged into one cyberpunk prompt to help prevent confusion or split votes

You may create a moodboard or Pinterest board for your theme to showcase. Similar prompts will be condensed into a singular moodboard or pinterest board for people to view. This is not a required step.

Have fun! Don't get too worried about making anything perfect, or winning. NOTE: We do reserve the right to reword certain prompts to create a more unique theme or theme name if we are provided vague prompts. ▪️SIGNIFICANT ROCKET BARRAGE from LEBANON… Kiryot (north Haifa), Acco, Acre, Nahariya and surrounds.  The Al Mayadin channel claims that 15 rockets were launched towards the northern Israel from southern Lebanon earlier source says 14 were launched 15 minutes earlier - that’s 29 total.  Another source says “by Hamas in Lebanon” - but nothing happens in southern Lebanon without Hezbollah approval.

▪️HEZBOLLAH THREATENS U.S. NAVY SHIPS… Hezbollah publishes video showing ship-killer missiles, threatening the US carrier battle group nearby.  These are Iranian Nur ship-killer missiles.

▪️FOREIGN FIGHTERS?  The security establishment is conducting an investigation into whether foreign citizens who came from outside Gaza participated in the massacre on October 7.  (And possibly still fighting in Gaza, rumors of other languages being heard by soldiers.)

▪️TULKARM (Arab city, Samaria)… IDF forces enter, significant firefight, elimination of an enemy squad described as a “ticking time bomb”. Head of the military wing of Hamas in Tulkarm and the head of the military wing of Fatah in Tulkarm. 

▪️POLICEWOMAN INJURED IN JERUSALEM ATTACK DIES… from stabbing attack earlier today, police sergeant Ruth Elisheva Rose Aida Lubin, z”l.  May Hashem avenge her blood.

▪️US BASES UNDER ATTACK… The American Syria Tel Bider base is under attack now.  This is the sixth attack today on American bases.

▪️JORDAN SAYS… “Any attempt or creation of conditions to displace Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank - constitute a red line. Jordan will see this as a declaration of war."

▪️SOUTH AFRICA RECALLS DIPLOMATS from Israel.

▪️EVACUATION GRANT… the possibility to register for an evacuation grant was opened today for residents who vacated independently from the north and the south to a place to stay that is not funded by the state - more than 20 thousand applications were submitted. The daily deposit is NIS 100 for a child and NIS 200 for an adult.
