You know what proves the creators knew nothing about the ATLA fandom? Cause it’s so easy to understand us, truly, if only they tried.
One of the most popular episodes in the fandom, and one of the highest rated, is - Tales of Ba Sing Se. An episode where absolutely nothing happens to progress the story (except Appa’s footprint at the very last second). That episode is nothing but characters. No plot points, no tension, no fight scenes - nothing! Just our favorite characters going about their day.
While the live action is the opposite of that, it’s all plot and no character. So if you really want to make a good adaptation you should listen to your audience, cause it’s not that hard to figure out what we like.

Find Yourselves a Girl Like Jin
Zuko: [The city]'s okay.
Jin:

Zuko: You have... quite an appetite for a girl.
Jin:

She was trying so hard and Zuko was giving her nothing. But no matter how annoyingly awkward he was, she was commited. This kind of patience is gold. We must find it.

Tales of Ba Sing Se
A set of vignettes about each of the main characters' adventures in Ba Sing Se, providing a glimpse of their personalities and private lives. Katara and Toph have a girls' day out; Iroh helps people in town before celebrating the birthday of his late son; Aang helps a zookeeper build a new zoo; Sokka accidentally ends up in a poetry club; Zuko goes out on a date; and Momo searches Ba Sing Se for Appa.
The Boiling Rock, Part 2
Sokka, Zuko, Suki, and Chit Sang devise a new plan for escaping the prison, involving Hakoda in their plans. They escape by creating a prison riot and kidnapping the warden. However, problems for the four arrive when Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee visit the prison. As the plan teeters on the verge of failure, Mai helps Zuko and the others escape. Azula attacks Mai for her betrayal, but Ty Lee intervenes. Azula has them both imprisoned. The group returns to the Western Air Temple, and Hakoda is reunited with Katara.

So I've been watching atla for the first time, and I just watched Tales of Ba Sing Se, and can I just say that I did not expect Uncle Iroh's to end the way it did.
When he started sing Little Soldier Boy to Lu Ten's picture, I started sobbing like a baby. My eyes are wet and my heart hurts.

Lu Ten's letter to Iroh that we see in "Tales of Ba Sing Se" is signed "I will see you again after we win the war, your loyal son."
When Zuko kneels in front of Ozai and refuses to fight him right before being burned and banished, he says "I am your loyal son."
One son speaking of loyalty and fighting a war that he won't come back from, another loyal son refusing to fight and being sent away.
How hard it must have been for Iroh seeing Zuko thinking he had to prove his loyalty to his father by fighting a hopeless war. Iroh saying he wished he could have helped his son, realizing too late that he'd taken Lu Ten's loyalty for granted.

tales of ba sing se is one of my favorite episodes (of television in general tbh), and it’s just proof that sometimes filler episodes are 100% necessary.
let’s stop with these 8 episode shows. they’re too rushed and the pacing is awful 80% of the time anyway. why are we so afraid of filler?? it’s so important for delving into the actual personalities of the characters instead of just seeing how they act when completing some harrowing quest.
i want to see how they react to a girls day or to an awkward first date. give me all the fun superfluous details that we would never see otherwise. i love filler episodes so much!!!

im rewatching atla (cuz why not) and we do not talk enough about zuko's date in tales of ba sing se. like he's obviously a firebender and she straight up does not care?? like two days earlier jet attacked zuko for being firenation but this girl? she's no narc. despite the fact that zuko isn't rather terrible on a date and it got me thinking, why doesn't she care? and i think there's two possible reasons:
She doesn't think of the war as a serious problem. nobody in ba sing se is allowed to talk about the war, so even though refugees are pouring in, if you're born in the city, you're cut off from any information. being firenation isn't a good thing, it's just not the end of discussion it is in other parts of the world. or
she know's he's a victim too. regardless of where he's from, he's a victim of the war too. he has a massive scar on his face that identifies him as a victim of another firebender, along with the fact that he's living as a refugee with his uncle. it wouldn't be a stretch for her to think that that he's against the fireNATION too. maybe his parents stood up against the regime and were killed for it, maybe that's how he got his scar.
all and all, she doesn't know his backstory, and she chooses to not let that matter and let him speak for himself anyway.

Art Style and Emotions Evoked
One of the choices made for ATLA that I really admire is that they sometimes used intentional shifts in art style (such as lines and colors) to change the atmosphere in a scene (or part of a scene, such as an ink painting) and give off a certain feeling, often dream-like and with the occasional benefit of reminding us of real life art history.
Some examples of this can be seen in the episodes The Storm, The Cave of Two Lovers, Zuko Alone, Tales of Ba Sing Se and The Beach. Basically, it tends to happen during Zuko’s trips down memory lane or when focus is put on other members of the Fire Family (but not always).

You can see the differences of course, but also the strong yet subtle similarities between the first three images above—and especially the third one where a younger Zuko can be seen standing next to his father—and the fourth one after, where Zuko is standing on his ship. The third and fourth images practically mirror each other; one younger with a more innocent vibe, the other older and hardened from the past.
Also, the first three, to me, have softer edges and warmer tones. And (when animated) appear more blurry. It reminds me of a sepia-hued, smudge-style canvas painting or even an edited photograph. It’s truly like a memory, which is exactly what that scene depicts.

The above is yet another example of a memory being shown within scene, although it somehow seems more “real” than the previous images, imo.
I think it’s because of the way it’s made to look closer to the regular art style. A part of me wonders if this maybe was the “original” art style that they were going to go for, before they switched to a more commonly used one.

Now I'd say the above is akin to that of a caricature, which I absolutely love. The Fire Gang all look like themselves, yet not, due to the exaggeration that also helps to showcase their differing personalities. The beach was actually a goldmine for stuff like this: Exaggerated illustration of personality.
A few more beautiful examples:

All in all, the changes in art style were a very good, dynamic choice for a high quality, quickly-advancing show. I can look on the images used in this post alone for ages, just studying and enjoying them.

here's the big question then......if this is a swap AU, and Lu Ten is in Iroh's place, does that mean Iroh died at the Seige of Ba Sing Se 👁️👁️
Tumblr media
Yup, Lu Ten survived, but Iroh died.
After this his son tried his absolute best to be just like him, to be a good fatherly/brotherly figure towards Zuko and Azula.
(I had to crack out my mediocre Chinese skills for this I hope I did okay. I only know a few grammar rules and words so forgive me if the writing makes no sense lmao)
