"A Delhi-based engineer has designed a replacement for polystyrene packaging out of “rice stubble” the dead stalks left over after the rice season in India, millions of tons of which are burned every year.
They say wisdom oft comes from the mouths of babes, and Mr. Arpit Dhupar was at first left scratching his head when his young nephew drew a picture of the world with a grey sky.
Everything else was normal, green grass, yellow sun, white and brown mountains; why was the sky grey? It dawned on him that his nephew was drawing the sky as he saw it every year when the rice stubble was burned: grey.
“We shouldn’t live in a world where we have to explain to kids that the sky should be painted blue. It should be a given,” he told The Better India.
So he launched a new business venture called Dharaksha Ecosystems in order to tackle the rice stubble problem. Essentially, the farmers need it cleared off their land asap after harvest. Its high moisture content means it’s not useful for stove fuel, so they burn it in massive pyres.
In his factory, he turns 250 metric tons of rice stubble harvested from 100 acres of farmland in Punjab and Haryana into packaging, while paying the farmers a rate of $30 per acre for something they would usually burn.

Dhupar originally wanted to use mushrooms to rapidly biodegrade baled stacks of rice stubble, but found that the fungus left behind a metabolite that wasn’t biodegradable—in other words, he’d have to create a waste problem to solve a waste problem.
Over time he realized that the filaments that make up the subterranean structure of the mushrooms, called mycelium, were acting as a sort of binding agent, turning the baled stubble into something durable.
“This wasn’t a waste material but could be a usable one,” said Dhupar. “Through bio-fabrication, we could use the stubble waste to create a material similar to [polystyrene], but one that was biodegradable.”
There are a lot of these sorts of sustainable packaging ideas floating around, invented by people who rarely have experience in markets and commerce. This is not the case with Dhupar’s stubble packaging.
He has already prevented over half a million pounds of polystyrene from entering landfills since launching his product, which has numerous, exceptional properties.
They sell around 20 metric tons of their product every month, making about $30.5 thousand dollars per annum, mostly by selling to glassware companies."

what's the most important piece of advice you could give someone who's getting into downloading media (piracy, archiving, whatever)?
For the love of God, MAKE BACKUPS. I had to learn this lesson the hard way as a teenager when my external hard drive crashed and I couldn't pay the data recovery fee (which would have been a few hundred dollars, if it even worked).
Have backups. Have backups of your backups. To give you an idea of what my data and backup setup is:
My laptop: two backups (physical backup via external hard drive and automatic cloud backup via BackBlaze)
My media collection: three sources/backups (two external hard drives and a NAS [network attached storage system] with a failsafe measure because it has two hard drives; I will most likely look into cloud-based backup as well).
If you've noticed, I not only have a backup of all my data, I also have backups of backups. When it comes to your precious data, you seriously can't be too careful. I would recommend at least investing in one physical backup option as well as a cloud-based one (like BackBlaze).

I think there's something very terrifyingly charming about Hivemind being very… passionate about obedience. After all, without conformity, unity, deference, a hive would hardly operate in the way it truly needs to. I do think he takes this perspective beyond his hives, though, and into the wider world of Zoraxis and his fellow employees, for better or worse…
Insubordination… frustrates him. Hivemind doesn't believe he could bring himself to hate any of his coworkers, per say, but it gets underneath his skin when they don't just… follow orders as they're given. Unknowingly, others can find him in a rare state of uncharacteristic sternness when anyone disobeys or shrugs off an order from him. Intense staring, ominous looming, his usually chipper voice strained with annoyance.
Are they sure? Mm… It would just be so much nicer if they did this one little favor for him. Hivemind is patient, sure. But not to a fault. There's no room for 'bee' in disobedience.
On the flip side, though, he's more than happy to encourage and enforce the positive behaviors of his coworkers… Treat training and praise are some of his favorite tools, and while some operatives are more susceptible than others, his 'friendly' demeanor earns him a pretty good reputation with the others. It turns into a bit of a feedback loop.
After all, who wouldn't want to do a brief little favor or two in exchange for one of his crowd pleasing honey cupcakes? And he always has just the nicest things to say about your performance each time… You're so smart. Or so strong. So cunning and helpful. What unbeelievably marvelous coworkers he has. 😊.

I had not re-read Dracula since finding out that Bram Stoker was British actor-manager Henry Irving’s business manager (maybe more what we’d call production manager today) so I signed up for Dracula daily. And from the May 5th entries I am particularly enjoying:
A) How much you can tell that the author is into theatrical lighting design (and specifically theatrical lighting design at a time when the transition from gas lamps / limelight to electric light was allowing for the development of some really cool new optical illusion tricks - and also less burning down the entire theatre).
B) That the physical description of Dracula is really just Henry Irving (see below) with a mustache and some fangs. Like, dude, you are describing your boss. Your boss who is a super famous actor.
