love the idea of billy being able to approach anyone at school and it just being accepted. him not necessarily being apart of the popular crowd but anytime he chooses to grace them with his presence, they're all over him, offering him a seat and the latest hottest gossip. him talking to some nerd in class, asking for a pen becos he doesn't believe in bringing his own school supplies, and said nerd internally rolling their eyes but still handing over a pen. him talking to the drama kids, asking where they got that sick as fuck leather jacket for their musical, getting confused and lowkey alarmed looks but still an answer.
love the idea of there being only a select few people that can approach him and have him actually respond and acknowledge them, everyone else not even getting a glance.
eddie being one of them.
eddie and billy seeming to become eddie and billy overnight, like one day they were strangers and the next they were basically inseparable.
eddie walking up behind billy in the hallway and swinging an arm over his shoulder, fucking with his hair, before dumping half the shit he was carrying in billy’s basically unused satchel. billy giving him a what the fuck look but still holding it open for him, and eddie rolling his eyes and saying it was fucking empty anyway, billy shoving his satchel onto eddie's shoulder cos he’s not carrying around eddie's shit for him all day.
eddie being able to lean against billy's car, jump in the passenger seat without an invitation or even a comment, cos billy does the same thing to eddie's van just as often.
they have one class together, and their teacher’s given up on separating them, cos eddie’s just gonna talk to billy from across the room anyway, and billy’s gonna throw notes back to him, ripping up the piece of paper he borrowed from the guy beside him and throwing them at eddie's hair.
they have fun in detention together.
heathers another one.
they’re coworkers, yeah, but heather was probably the first person that billy ever truly gave a shit about in this shithole of a town. heathers been a cheerleader since becoming a cheerleader was an option, but somehow, like billy these days, always seems to just do her own thing.
she can sit on billy’s lap at lunch if they both bother with the cafeteria and the most billy will do is wrap an arm around her waist and move around 'til their more comfortable.
she can go through his shit to find his car keys to make a quick run to his car at lunch to find some spare hairbands and bobby-pins cos her’s broke and billy’s got spare shit everywhere in his car ever since he basically started being everyone’s personal chauffeur.
she can drag his notes across and copy everything he's written cos she was too busy texting chrissy under the table to pay attention and the most billy will do is ask what the plans were for that night. his notes half the time are basically illegible but billy's more or less somehow got mostly straight A's so heather'll take it.
sometimes she wears his jacket. rips him off about the lip stain. billy tells her to do a better one since she gives so much of a fuck.
chrissy joins billy’s inner-circle slowly, then instantly.
billy knows of her, has probably even spoke to her, but it’s not until they meet in eddie's trailer and all smoke up together - eddie and billy fucking around on eddie's guitars, heather with her feet swung over the back of the couch, chrissy sitting tense on the single armchair before slowly loosening up - that billy feels like he actually meets her.
suddenly, she’s pulling away from jason, from the other basketball players, from all her cheer friends, and slowly she’s hanging out with heather under the bleachers, she’s meeting up with eddie in the woods, and she’s waiting around the camaro at the end of the day to catch a ride home.
suddenly billy’s waiting around after basketball/cheer practice until chrissy’s ready to leave, cos jason's been talking a lot of shit lately, and billy doesn’t really think he’s got it in him to do something reckless, but he’s also not stupid enough to underestimate a guy like jason carver.
chrissy getting nervous when she sees jason loitering around but then she sees billy waiting just behind him, and she’s feeling brave suddenly, so she practically dances her way over to billy, grabs his hand before leaning into his side, and billy’s leaning right back and dropping her hand so he can wrap his arm around her shoulder, and she leaves without looking back. billy flips jason the bird over his shoulder.
max, obviously, when she starts going to the same high school. they’ve spent the previous summer working so much shit out, and it doesn’t mean they’re not still at each others throats over the stupidest shit, but it does mean that when billy bitches about having to wait around after her stupid nerd clubs, he does it without that much heat, and when max bitches about having to deal with the fact that every single person and teacher in this damn school has an opinion on her just becos she’s billy hargrove’s little sister, she sometimes sounds kind of proud to have that label. most of the time, she’s just annoyed.
max sometimes shoves her shit in billy’s locker, becos her locker’s full of dustin’s science shit, and sometimes when she’s carrying her board around at the end of the day, billy’ll come up behind her and smack it out of her grasp before skating down the hallway. she always feels vindicated when billy gets caught though, cos she never does.
shaking billy down for lunch money, cos susan seems to think max actually likes tunafish sandwiches, when she rly truly fucking hates them. billy usually telling her to fucking scram, but occasionally giving in and passing her some change.
max sometimes tracking him down at the start of her lunch period and holding a hand out for his car keys, a pissed off look on his face, and billy takes one look behind he to see her lil gang looking all shifty, and billy - having been on the receiving end of her attitude fucking constantly in the past - just sighing before handing his keys over. more often than not, trailing behind her, even when she tells him to fuck off, just throwing a shit eating grin her way with an aww, so little maxine can have a pity party for one? fuck no. what'd the fuckers do this time?
lucas, becos he’s max’s boyfriend, and also becos he’s on the team, and he seems to be sneaking over every other weekend, and things may still be rocky between them, but since billy make his apology, they’ve been getting better. they’re not exactly besties, but sometimes they play a one on one game after practice ends and no one’s in a rush to get home, and most times lucas will win becos he’s honestly just better than billy at basketball, and each time billy will ask for best out of three, then best out of five, cos he fucking sucks at losing.
when jason and some of the other basketball dickheads start trying to drag lucas in, pulling their fake shit only to split whenever it’s convenient, billy just watches on before rolling his eyes and pulling lucas’ gear closer to his in the locker room and gives him the worlds shittest pep talk. jason carver ain’t shit, trust me. fuck that guy.
carol! and tommy! except billy’s a dick and he thinks it’s funny to fuck with tommy, so when carol comes up to him and catches him up to date with the latest wild happenings from the party he couldn’t be fucked to attend the night before, crashing at eddie’s with the others instead, and tommy tries to go in for a simple bro-handshake, billy gives him a blank stare and holds his hand out limply, not participating, watches the look on tommy’s face go from excited to confused, before finally grabbing him by the hand and pulling him close, hand on his shoulder, ‘i’m fucking with you’, then doing the stupid bro-shake thing. tommy laughing it off but turning to carol with wide eyes, every fucking time, like ‘shit, are we cool? are we friends?’ and carol just patting him on the shoulder before tucking herself into his side, all ‘yeah, babe, you're good.’
#anyway au where when billy first rolled into town; he truly did feel the need to like. make himself big. surround himself with crowds#fit in with the popular kids. attend every party. but then s3 happened#or like the non-upsidedown version but still a major critical life changing event. and when hes as healed as hes gonna get#and finally standing on his own two feet; trying to get his life back on track#he just. cant be fucked with keeping up appearances anymore. fuck being basketball captain fuck being the keg king fuck being That Guy#instead all he needs is his sister and his few people. that's literally all that matters.#anyway i think its be FUN if eddie can't understand shit in class so he's like 'billy what the fucks this mean'#but the teacher DID separate them so billy - from the literal other side of class - tries to explain it in terms eddie will click with#much to the teachers surprise; eddies grades actually improve#also. heather and chrissy wearing the guys jackets. its THAT simple#but also consider: chrissy wearing eddies jacket but eddies kinda chilly so billy offers him his leather jacket#that happens to be in the car. while heathers got his denim one. and billys just walking around in sleeves in a hawkins winter like a tool#max gives him SO much shit#also billy tommy and carol is like. billy was Faking it Til he Could Make it when he first met them so he keeps them at a distance#but then when he's in hospital and recovering; before eddie and chrissy are rly on his radar#and its just max and heather sitting by his side; tommy and carol come through#they're the only ones from billys Friend Group that reach out and visit; that check in; that fucking care#so when billy does stroll back into school. he just - walks straight pass jason and all his fake ass sympathies; straight past the girls#that use to hang all over him; gives tommy and carol a two finger salute as he walks by but completely ignores everyone else#and meets up w heather at his locker#m#nqff

Another One Bites the Dust
Summary: In which you accidentally run into the new guy, only for him to take an interest in you.
Tumblr media
Words: 2.8K Warnings: None really.  Requested? This wasn’t requested, but it was inspired by THIS POST posted by @thehargrovewhore It’s not necessarily what they were looking for, but this fic is what snowballed from me thinking about someone running into Billy XD
High school would have been a living nightmare had you not been befriended by Heather Holloway. She was one of the- if not the most- popular girls at Hawkins High and she made attending school bearable for you. But being friends with someone like Heather was bound to land you high up in the popularity rankings and it unfortunately made you a target for people like Carol and Tommy who wanted to tear down those they considered a threat to their own ranking.
Fortunately for you, Heather wasn't one to back down from a confrontation. If you weren't particularly feeling up to defending yourself, then Heather stepped in with her too sweet words laced with venom that usually shut the couple up. And though Heather was popular, she wasn't the type that everyone feared. She was the cool girl everyone idolized, the girl everyone adored, and since you were her best friend everyone else made sure to respect your boundaries and leave you be if you weren't feeling very sociable.
But now it's been about a month since the girls of Hawkins High have gone crazy for newcomer Billy Hargrove and you're so over all the giggling, the whispers, and the cocky persona he puts on when he notices he's being stared at. Normally someone's attitude like his wouldn't bother you, but the girls don't seem to have a care in the world when attempting to get close to him even if it meant pushing you out of the way to do so. And that, that bothers you.
"What's wrong with you?" Heather asks, leaning against the lockers next to yours, popping her bubblegum. "You're in a mood."
You sigh as you pick out your sketchpad that you need for your last class of the day. "I only got four hours of sleep last night and I've got a headache. I thought that by now the fascination with Mr. California would have died down, but apparently the girls are more desperate than ever, including Carol who seems to see me as some sort of competition and won't stop pestering me about the new guy."
"Really?" Heather perks up, pushing off the lockers. "You've talked to that sunkissed God?"
"One, ew." Your nose wrinkles in distaste and you start walking towards the Art room. Heather follows. "And two, no. I haven't talked to him which is why I'm confused and so over Carol talking shi-" You're cut off as you walk into a wall- or what you think is a wall- and you actually fall backwards down on your ass with a startled yelp. "What the hell was that?!" You ask, rubbing at your now sore nose before glancing upwards. An amused Billy Hargrove stands above you, hands on his hips which hold open his denim jacket to show off his white tee that fits him like a second skin. "Did I just run into you?" You ask, clearly not distracted by his cocky stance at all. "What the hell are you made out of? Brick?"
He smirks, but before he can say anything Heather is bending down and collecting your dropped sketchpad. She giggles. "You really shouldn't walk and talk, Y/N. You never know who you're going to run into."
"You're a bitch. You know that? You totally saw him standing there and didn't warn me."
"It's about time you get some one on one with Mr. California. I think you're the only girl he hasn't chased yet."
"And it's going to stay that way!" You hiss.
"Need a hand there, Princess? I mean I don't mind your current position, but-"
Your head jerks to stare up at Billy, gaze narrowing. "Not another word." He holds his hands up in mock surrender, winking. You roll your eyes. "And thanks, but no thanks."
You stand up without any aid, avoiding everyone's gazes who had stopped to stare. Yanking your sketchpad back from Heather, you scowl at her. Then when you move to continue on walking, you and Billy end up going in the same direction at once. You sidestep at the exact same time he sidesteps and he chuckles when you get visibly annoyed. Groaning, you slap a hand to Billy's chest and push him aside. But before you can step away, you glance at his chest where your hand is at and you end up poking him. "Jesus. Why are you so-"
"Hard?"
Heather giggles and you quickly glare up at him, snatching your hand back. "Gross. But essentially, yes."
"Well-"
The warning bell rings, startling you from hearing what Billy has to say. Glancing at your best friend, you say, "Shit. I need to get to class. If you're not in my car ten minutes after the bell's rung, I'm leaving your skinny ass behind."
As Y/N runs off, Billy watches her go. Heather smirks, pulling down her heart-shaped sunglasses from the top of her head to perch on the bridge of her nose.
"Where have you been hiding her, Holloway?"
"Don't even think about it, Hargrove." Heather pops her bubblegum, grinning. "Y/N is happy to be a wallflower. She doesn't care for that seductive charm of yours when you set your sights on a girl."
He waggles his eyebrows. "Been talking about me with her, huh?"
"Nope. Your girl Carol won't stop harassing her about you." Letting her smile fall, Heather practically sneers at Billy. "Get Carol in check. If Y/N is unhappy, I'm unhappy. And trust me, you won't want us to be unhappy."
Billy chuckles, stepping closer and tugging on one of Heather's curls that's been gathered into a sideways ponytail. "Don't worry about Carol. Y/N, however, I have a feeling she's going to be begging me for a ride pretty soon."
Heather's smile makes a comeback. "Good. And since I think my best friend needs to have some sort of fun, I'll give you this piece of information. Be pushy, but not too pushy. Rile her up just enough and her annoyance with you will eventually turn into fondness."
The final bell rings and Heather starts to walk backwards, wiggling her fingers in a mock wave before Billy can say anything in return.
Tumblr media
A few days later, you've stayed behind after the final bell has rang for the school day. The art teacher is off making copies of some worksheets she plans to hand out the following week in the main office and you're adding the finishing touches to your current project. The painted cassette tape takes up nearly seventy percent of the canvas and the plastic film is painted in a mangle of loops around the tape. The tape is just wide enough for you to carefully paint lyrics along it which is what you're doing right now since there are no distractions around.
You're painstakingly painting the lyrics to Girls Just Want To Have Fun with the thinnest paint brush you could find when you hear footsteps behind you.
"Just ten more minutes, Miss Ackers. I'm almost done."
"I know I'm pretty, Princess, but not as pretty as that art teacher of yours."
That particular voice makes you sigh before you lean back, placing your paintbrush in a cup of water. "What are you doing here, Hargrove?" Turning around you see him staring at your canvas.
"Not bad," he says. "You're pretty good."
"It's just a cassette tape. Nothing fancy."
"Oh but it is." He says. "You didn't just paint a tape. You painted a tape that looks like it's been handled numerous times. Almost like it's.. worn down."
Your lips twitch at the sight of Billy actually studying your art. You inhale deeply, swallowing down the urge to immediately bicker with him. "Thanks."
He smirks, tucking his hands into the front of his jean's pockets before dragging his gaze back to you. "So a little birdie told me you liked burgers. Wanna grab a bite to eat with me, Y/N? I promise to make it worth your while."
"And you ruined the moment." Your shoulders slump and you turn back around to gather all your supplies. Walking towards the back of the room where a sink resides, you wash off your paint pallet, clean your brushes, and rinse out your cup. When you turn back around, Billy is a lot closer than before and you gasp in surprise. "Jesus."
"Close. It's Billy."
"Whatever you say, Bobby." He snorts and when you sidestep him you bite back a smile at the brief back and forth. "I've actually got stuff to do. If you're looking for a date, I hear Nicole's seconds away from getting down on her knees. Have fun."
"You'll cave sooner or later."
"Keep dreaming, Benny."
Tumblr media
A few more days pass and your walls are starting to crumble.
Billy Hargrove has learned your entire class schedule and is now just around every corner. You can't seem to escape him, and when you do Heather takes up the reigns and talks non-stop about him. His flirtations, instead of making you blush, start to make you laugh and he's got you right where he and Heather want you. The rest of the high school female population, however, are not happy with the turn of events.
Lunch has just ended and you've dumped your tray alongside Heather. The both of you have walked out into the hallway, but in order to keep the conversation going you've turned around so you're walking backwards.
"Alright. Who would you rather: Joe Perry from Aerosmith or Roger Taylor from Queen?"
You scoff. "You could have made it harder. Roger Taylor, of course."
Heather's eyes briefly flicker behind you, but you don't pay it any mind. Not even when her eyes light up. "Oh. Of course," she grins. "You obviously have a thing for those light-haired boys."
"I might have a thing for some light-haired boys." You shrug and start to turn, keeping your gaze on Heather. "But if anyone's going to get me on my knees, it'd be- oomph!" You crash into someone and stumble back, your cheek hurting from the chest you've hit. Heather cackles as hands quickly grab onto you to steady you and then wraps an arm around your shoulders.
"Princess," Billy drawls.
You tense. "Nope." This can't be happening. You did not just crash into Billy while talking about getting on your knees. Chancing a glancing up, you cringe. It's definitely him.
"What were you saying just moments ago? Who's going to get you on your knees?"
Heather laughs some more and you shake your head. "We're not doing this today, Hargrove."
"Well I mean, just pick a day. Any day. I've been dying to get you on your-"
"Gross!" You wrinkle your nose and elbow him in his side, he smirking down on you. "I was talking about Roger Taylor. You know, the drummer from Queen."
"You mean my twin?" This time it's your turn to laugh and you don't even fight him when he starts leading you down the hallway with Heather practically skipping at your side. "So what were you ladies up to before Y/N tried seducing me with her words?"
"We," Heather quickly cuts off your retort, "are just going to kill the rest of the lunch period in Y/N's car. Care to join us?"
"And before your brain runs away with whatever it conjures up, no this isn't an invitation for a threesome. We're just going to listen to music and talk, and that's it. If you can't keep your dick in your pants for twenty minutes, then you're not welcome."
Billy sighs. "Take away all my fun." Heather giggles and you grin, and Billy continues to walk you to your car. "Next time though, we're skipping school food and going out."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night, Bennett."
Tumblr media
After the final bell rang, it was no surprise to find Billy waiting outside the art classroom. He waited until everyone had left, he then entering the room to help you carry a couple of your canvases you were taking home now that they've been graded and on display long enough.
Even after weeks of flirting and getting absolutely nowhere, a real friendship somehow blossomed between you and him. He's still the most arrogant boy you've ever met, and downright mean at times to your peers, but it's.. it's Billy.
So after laying your artwork in the trunk of your car and still no Heather, you join Billy over at his car. You readily hop onto the hood, smirking when he glares at you, and promise to not scratch his baby. He rolls his eyes, lights up a cigarette, and leans on the spot right next to you.
"So you're telling me you never once hooked up with Tina?" You ask, giggling. Billy shakes his head, the corner of his mouth quirked up in a grin. "Seriously? She's been telling anyone and everyone that she's slept with you at least twice."
Billy shrugs. "There was some heavy petting the night of her Halloween party, but that's about it."
"Jesus. Halloween? Didn't you move here like a day or two before?"
"Something like that."
"That girl sure does move fast."
Billy chuckles and takes a long drag of his cigarette, letting the smoke sit for a few seconds before exhaling it all out. With your backpack next to you, you open up the front pocket and take out a bag of skittles you'd been snacking on during lunch. Pouring some into your palm, you hold out your hand towards Billy to see if he wants some. He chooses the red ones since he knows they're your favorite and quickly tosses them into his mouth.
"You're a dick."
The school kids are slowly pouring out from the main entrance and still there's no Heather. There is, however, Carol and her little lackey Nicole.
"Careful, Billy. The cow you have sitting on the hood of your car is bound to leave a dent or two." Nicole practically cackles at Carol's remark- Carol who's smirking as if she's just won some sort of confrontation.
You merely smile in return. "Careful, Carol. Jealousy doesn't suit you."
She scoffs. "Jealousy? What exactly do I have to be jealous of? You're nothing."
"Oh I don't know," you slowly grin, leaning towards Billy and sliding an arm around the back of his shoulders. He chuckles. "Maybe you're jealous over the fact that Billy hasn't given you the time of the day. Then again, your boyfriend is practically his little lap dog so maybe you're pissed because the only one on one time you can have with him, he spends it with me."
Her amusement completely vanishes, but before she can open her mouth to retort Tommy is putting an arm around her shoulders. "Hey, babe. What's going on?" He asks before nodding at Billy. "Hey man."
"Nothing." Carol then pastes on a smile and kisses the underside of his jaw.
"Nothing?" You muse, feigning innocence. "Now I wouldn't say that." Carol glances at you, eyes narrowing and Nicole frowns before taking a step back. Glancing at Tommy, you then say, "Put a leash on your girl, man. She's acting kind of bitchy because Hargrove hasn't asked her to get on her knees for him yet."
Tommy's smile drops. "What?"
"Sorry, man, but it's true." Billy tells him. "I've known my fair share of persistent girls, but yours really takes the cake."
"Hey fuck you, man." Tommy stands a little taller, clearly defending his girlfriend.
You roll your eyes. "Don't get pissy at him, Tom-Tom. Carol's the one who can't take a hint and get bent somewhere else."
"Screw you, Y/N!"
"Nah. I rather save the screwing for Billy." You smirk.
You hear a slight sharp inhale from your friend, but don't bother looking at him. Carol sneers, Nicole cracks a grin, and Tommy scoffs. "Lets go, babe. Obviously Billy isn't a friend of ours."
"Took you long enough to catch on, did it?"
As the trio finally take their leave, you lean back and slide your arm off of Billy's shoulders. He turns, but you immediately shake your head. "Don't. I didn't mean it."
"Are you positive?"
"Oh my god." You laugh. "I just said it to get under her skin."
"Get under whose skin?" Heather's finally joined you, smacking her gum.
"Carol's." You slide off the hood of Billy's car, but he doesn't let you go far.
"Y/N told Carol she would screw me."
Heather gapes, but you're quick to defend your word choice. "In a joking manner!" Billy laughs and you groan as he pulls you under his arm as usual. "Goddammit. I'm never going to live this down."
"Not a chance in hell, Princess. Wanna go to the movies with me?"
You sigh and start to walk towards your own car. "Get bent, Brad."
"That's not even close to sounding like Billy," he calls after you.
"I don't care!"
Heather starts to giggle and Billy smirks over at her. "Progress, Holloway. This is good progress."

45!!! i love blind stumbly kisses!!!
45. Kisses exchanged as they move around, hitting the edges of tables or nearly tripping over things on the floor before making it to the sofa, or bed.
The wine—all two glasses of it—had gone to Billy’s head. He kissed Steve in the Uber on the way home, ignoring the obvious stare of the driver in the rearview mirror. To hell with his five star rating. He was turning fifty next week, and it was their anniversary.
They didn’t do special occasions, as a general rule. Not Christmas, not Easter, and definitely not Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Sometimes Max visited on his birthday, with Eleven in tow. But Billy never liked to make a big deal out of it. Something about being the center of attention, of having a hundred people in the room looking at him, made him uneasy.
It never used to make him uneasy, but that was before Hawkins. Before the shadow.
“Down, boy,” Steve said in his ear. He was sitting with his legs folded neatly together, comically ladylike, but it was only so Billy couldn’t get at his crotch. It didn’t matter. Billy still had Steve’s neck, his ears, his jaw, and he kissed all three in quick succession. Steve squirmed and slapped his hand away, grinning. Their driver huffed.
“It’s my birthday,” Billy said.
“Your birthday’s still five days away.” Steve kissed his hand, then lowered it into his lap. To the driver he said, “Don’t mind him. He’s a lightweight,” holding Billy’s hand as he spoke. Billy lifted his eyes to the ones watching him in the rearview mirror. He didn’t think the driver’s problem was with Billy being a lightweight, but for Steve’s sake, he held his tongue.
The Chicago skyline passed the window in a dreamy blur, all twinkling lights and gently falling snow. It was like peering inside a novelty snow globe; it didn’t quite feel real. Billy’s breath misted the window, and in the middle of the white he drew a number: 50. The big five-O. That didn’t feel real, either.
“Just here, thanks,” he said to the driver. He was unbuckling his seatbelt before the car had stopped moving, tugging on Steve’s hand. They tumbled onto the sidewalk, one after the other: Steve gingerly, to avoid slipping on the ice, Billy not so much. Snowflakes blanketed Steve’s hair and shoulders in a white wedding veil, but his face was pleasantly pink, looking as flushed and giddy as Billy felt. This time, he welcomed Billy’s kiss without a moment’s hesitation, swaying a little, leaning into him.
“You’re frisky tonight,” Steve said. His grin wasn’t as wide as it was inside the Uber. He held Billy’s face in his gloved hands, one thumb stroking his cheekbone. The scar there.
“I’m alive,” Billy answered. He pushed both palms down the back of Steve’s trousers, giving his ass a healthy squeeze. Turning Steve’s next kiss into a gasp.
He hadn’t let Steve make any toasts. Dinner had been a modest affair, which was exactly how Billy had wanted it. Given free rein to do what he pleased, Steve would have gone all out: extravagant, seven-course buffets overlooking the waterfront, matching cufflinks, hotel stays. It wasn’t that Billy was ungrateful. Fuck no. He already had his blessings, and he knew how to count them. One kiss for Steve, for the long hairs he left in the shower and the way he would randomly burst into offkey song while cooking, and get half the lyrics wrong. Two kisses for nights when Steve was working late and Billy fell asleep on the sofa waiting for him. Three kisses for their apartment, which was too hot in the summer and icy in the winter, the walls that were so frail you could hear the sound of their neighbor’s toilet flushing from three floors above. Another kiss for Steve, for lazy Sunday mornings when they were snowed in and it was too cold to do anything except sleep and fuck. Kisses, countless kisses, for the life they’d built out of nothing.
It was still sinking in, almost. When Billy left Indiana, all he had was the clothes on his back, Steve’s weed in the glovebox, Steve’s hand on his thigh and his Nikes propped up on the dashboard. Neither one of them knew where they were going, only that they had to leave. Thirty-one—fucking thirty-one—years later, Billy still woke up thinking that he was still eighteen again, that half his life had been one long, blissful dream. Too good to be true.
He’d never expected to live past the age of twenty-seven.
“We’re not gonna be alive much longer, if we keep standing out here,” Steve said. He laughed out loud when Billy planted another sloppy kiss on his cheek. “C’mon, Billy, it’s freezing—”
“I thought you liked the cold?”
“Even I know better than to mess with a Chicago winter.” Steve plucked at the sleeve of Billy’s denim jacket, his eyebrow cocked. Old habits die hard. Then he raised his voice to a whiny, childlike falsetto: “Billy, I’m cold—"
“Okay, okay. C’mere.”
He backed Steve into the stairwell of their apartment building, hands under his jacket. It was uncoordinated and utterly heedless of any bystanders, little more than a smearing of mouths and wayward, knocking limbs. At the top of the stairs, Steve untangled himself to fish for his keys, giving Billy a long, careful look as he did so. “Are you okay?” he asked.
His eyes had found the scar again. Billy was used to it—knew Steve couldn’t help staring at his scars, not after Hawkins and the shadow and what had happened to a girl named Heather Holloway—but this stare seemed particularly loaded.
“Fuckin’ A,” he said. He tucked a lock of hair behind Steve’s ear, then kissed the lobe. The words left him, fast as a bullet; he’d never learned how to say them without feeling like all the air had been squeezed out of him, helpless, breathless: “I love you.”
Steve gave him a soft, glad smile. “Not so.” He leaned in, his breath sweet with wine. “I love you more.”
The key turned in the lock; Steve jimmied the door open, then came at him in a rush. More staggering, blind kisses, Steve pulling Billy’s jacket off his shoulders and maneuvering him through a minefield of furniture. The apartment was dark, but they knew where everything was; by now it was rote, comfortingly familiar. Three steps forward and two steps to the left; Steve was pushing him hungrily onto the sofa, kissing down his neck, the only casualties being their clothes and shoes.
“Happy half a century, baby,” Steve panted into his mouth.
Billy bit into his lower lip, eliciting a whine that made him shiver. He liked it when Steve made noises, even though Billy himself was quiet. “Happy anniversary.”
“We have an anniversary?”
“Sure we do,” Billy said. “The same day we got the hell out of Dodge. Adios, amigos.”
It had been the topic of many a fierce debate over the years. Steve was better at remembering dates than Billy was, but even he struggled to name an exact point in time where he and Billy were together—as in, together-together, not simply sneaking into each other’s bedrooms at night. They’d had a lot of sex on those nights, and a lot of fights; they’d clawed at each other like two feral alley cats. The nineties had been easier, calmer. Billy had a scar on his arm from where Neil had thrown a lit firecracker at him, the day he found out his son was leaving. It was the last scar Hawkins—and the rest of the wide, wicked world—would ever give him. Adios.
“So, what?” Steve was saying. “You wanna fuck like we’re eighteen again, up against a wall?”
Billy laughed. “Maybe the bed. I dunno if my knees can take it.”
Steve pulled him to his feet. “The bed, then.”
He wouldn’t let Billy walk. Instead, he carried him to the bedroom.
“I love you,” Billy blurted. Still breathless, still desperate, his hands fisted in the sheets. Steve’s hands were everywhere, tracing his scars. He said it, just to hear Steve say it back to him, to reaffirm it aloud one more time: thirty-one years, kisses aplenty, Sunday mornings numbering in the thousands. “I love you, I love you, Steve.” He said it, just to hear Steve reply, Not so. Like he always did. But it was so, Billy thought.
It was so.

I’ve been listening to a playlist called Bedroom Pop on Spotify and I’m having so many soft Steve feels; its a problem
Tumblr media
Steve’s favorite ‘couple thing’ to do with Y/n was watching movies while she played with his hair. It was honestly an addiction to him. Steve loved the undivided attention and contact she gave him when he let her mess with his hair. “Let me do your hair today. Please?”  Y/n begs, the two of them standing in his bathroom before he had to go to work. “I don’t know.” He looked at his damp hair. “Please…” He sighs, mocking exasperation. “Fine.” She smiled, telling him to go sit on his bed. She drags his products over, Steve humming when she started to run her fingers through it. She mocked his general routine, but managed to give it some waves. It was a little more relaxed than normal. “What do you think?” Y/n asked, putting her hands on his shoulders, her cheek pressing against his. “I like it. You think you can do it everyday?” She shook her head. “We’ll see.” Y/n kissed his cheek and hop up, pulling on her life-gaurd shorts over her work swimsuit. “Have fun at work. I think it should still look good under your hat.” She calls, leaving Steve to get dressed in his sailor suit.
Steve went to work, checking himself in mirrors a little more than usual. He hated to admit it but even though he liked what you did, he was worried it was going to deflate on him and then he would need the stupid Scoops hat. However, as it got closer to lunch, the amount of looks he got from girls had increased significantly. Y/nhad been the end to Steve’s longest time being single since 7th grade and he had spent the first weeks of summer flirting and failing miserably with girls who came to Scoops. “Hey Steve.” Tammy winked, looking over the menu. Steve could feel Robin about to combust behind him (yes, she was hiding). “Hey Tammy.” He smiled. “Where’s Y/n?” She asked, leaning back to look around the ice cream parlor. “At work. I think she told me at dinner last night that she and Hargrove have the same shift for the next three weeks.” Tammy’s expression was weird, her whipping her head back around to her friends that were standing behind her. “Yeah I think she said he changes in the parking lot or something. Right, Robin?” Steve revelled in the expressions both girls gave him; Tammy’s face had lit up, practically throwing money at Steve at the prospect of seeing Billy shirtless (like that wasn’t his constant state of being). Robin looked absolutely mortified and kicked him in the shin as Tammy and her pack ran off. “Ow! What?! It got rid of her, didn’t it?!”
“Weren’t supposed to get rid of her, dingus!”
“‘Cause seducing her while hiding under the bananas was working so well for you?”
“Tell Y/n to never do your hair again it makes you too cocky.” Robin went in the back to lick her wounds. Steve left work to pick up the kids and take them to the public pool, which he wouldn’t bother with but his girlfriend was the hot lifeguard and Steve didn’t want the kids in there after what happened to Barbara Holland.
“What the hell happened to your hair?” Dustin asked the second he got in the car. “What about it?” Steve asked after telling him to buckle his seatbelt. Dustin was giving him a look. “Y/n did my hair, okay? I like it and I’m not taking critiques now so shut up.”
“I was gonna say I like it.” He grumbled. The other kids all knew something was up with Steve, even if they weren’t sure what it was. When they got to the pool, Y/n was on her break, Heather taking over the stand. She was talking to Billy about switching shifts next week, wanting to do something special with Steve. Steve pushed the kids towards the locker room, Max offhandedly saying she liked how Y/n had done his hair, El nodding enthusiastically. He pulled on shorts and rushed to meet her, coming up behind her to grab her. He lifted her off her feet, Y/n squealing and laughing. “Steve! Put me down!” She didn’t say it like Nancy did. She turned to face him when he put her down, Y/n initiating the kiss. “Hi, pretty boy.” She whispered, having turned Billy’s taunt into a pet name for Steve. His cheeks pinked, her cupping his face and stealing another kiss. “Wear those denim shorts for him.” Billy suggested, winking at Y/n when she turned to acknowledge him. She rolled her eyes, shooing him away with a little smile. “When do you get off?”
“My shift just ended, conveniently.” She dragged him to a lounge chair she had already staked  a claim on, pulling Steve down to sit so she could put sunscreen on him. The kids all came out and dumped their stuff by the chair, Y/n telling Steve she needed to go change out of the lifeguard uniform. When she came back, Steve was nearly asleep already. She climbed on top of him, startling him awake. “Why so sleepy?” She kissed the tip of his nose, wrapping an arm around his neck. She hooked a leg around one of his, laying on her side in order to fit in the chair. “Scoops is cold and I have to stand up all day. It’s so fucking hot out here.” He whines, kissing her forehead. “I need to reserve you as my personal hairdresser, by the way.” Fingers brush a few rogue strands away from his eyes. “Yeah?”
“Yeah. Huge hit with the ladies.” She scoffed, rolling her eyes. “It was! Even Tammy flirted with me at work.”
“This is convincing me more to not do your hair in the morning, you know?”
“You have a hot commodity on your hands, Y/l/n.” She laughed, kissing his cheek. “You’ve always been a hot commodity, Steve.” He smiled, looking back over the pool, Will and Dustin looking like they were scheming against Lucas and Max, who were kissing. Then the whistle blew. “Sinclaire! Hands off!” Billy bellowed from the lifeguard tower. Y/n giggled, the kids flipping him off, Billy getting off the lifeguard stand. “Uh-oh.”
“Uh-oh is right.” Suddenly four out of seven kids were hiding under the umbrella with Steve and Y/n to hide from Billy as he went after Max and Lucas. “I love you, dork.” She whispers.
“Love you too, nerd.” Steve taunts back, fingers digging into her ribs, giggles erupting from Y/n. She was definitely going to be his hairdresser from now on.

Arcade Dreams: Chapter Twelve
Summary: There’s a new girl working at the Palace Arcade and Hawkins’ Family Video. Billy can’t stand her, and the feeling is mutual. No matter what everyone else seems to think.
Pairing: Billy Hargrove/OFC
A/N: Don’t worry everyone, no one’s gonna be getting flayed at the steel mill. Well, not yet anyways.
Sneaking out of the house had at one point been Teddi’s specialty. Back in New York she had snuck out to go to parties, go on dates or just to get out of the house so often that climbing out of her bedroom window had basically become a muscle memory. It was different now that she was in Hawkins. Her parents were more miserable and focused in on whatever it was that she was up to. But tonight would be different. Tonight would be like the old days. The Harringtons had invited her parents to their New Year’s Eve party, and Teddi knew that her mom and dad would be the last ones to leave sometime around dawn if the party really ended up to be as wild as Steve had described. “Last year Carol’s mom got so wasted she threw up in the pool and then locked herself in my parent’s bathroom for like...three hours.” he had said.
Steve Harrington had the same knack for sneaking out (and technically in when it came to sneaking into Nancy Wheeler’s bedroom while they had been together) that Teddi had. When Teddi had called the next morning to tell him the very cleaned up version of what had happened between her and her parents the night before he had gone into super sneak mode. Technically speaking it hadn’t been their best plan. After her shift was over for the night Teddi would drive home, Steve would follow her and park across the street until her parents left for their party and they would be off. They had decided that they would ditch their bonfire at one in order to get Teddi home well before her parents and they would be none the wiser to what she had been up to.
Teddi had put on an entire act. She came home, mumbled a hello to her parents, and headed to her room to remove her makeup and change into pjs to help with the illusion that she’d be staying in for the night. When her parents left completely dressed to the nines, Teddi was planted on the couch with a can of Coke and a bowl of popcorn. “We’ll be home late.” was all her father said before shutting the front door loudly behind him. Teddi sprung into action. She ran back to her bedroom, quickly changing out of her pjs and into her outfit for the night. The cold had finally caught up to her. Instead of the usual mini skirt or pair of cut off shorts, Teddi pulled on a pair of high waisted, black jeans and a bright, yellow chenille sweater. She kicked on her boots and grabbed her puffy jacket and was out the front door and rushing over to Steve’s car.
“Come on, come on, come on,” Steve said, hitting his hand against the steering wheel. Teddi slid into the passenger’s seat and the pair shared a high five. “That was like record time, Larsson!” he said as he took off down the street. The way that Steve called Teddi by her last time was much more...soft than the way Billy did.
“Not my first rodeo,” she laughed out as she tried to catch her breath. She was a little rusty, but she had still been impressed with how quickly she’d gotten ready. “So this isn’t gonna be a problem with the party? ‘Cause my parents are hoping for a rager.”
“Oh, totally. My mom looks forward to it every year. It’s the biggest party in Hawkins...according to her at least.” Teddi had never met Steve’s parents, but from the way Steve spoke about them she was sure that they would be great friends with her parents. And if that meant they’d be out of the house more often then Teddi was more than fine with it.
“So, where’s this steel mill at?”
“It’s like maybe twenty minutes out of town. It’s been abandoned for a few years. Tommy usually has parties there when nobody has folks that are out of town.” and by twenty minutes out of Hawkins, Steve may as well have said the steel mill was in the middle of nowhere. There was nothing around. He mentioned there was a sort of shitty motel that had been turned into apartments a few miles up the road, but that was about it until you got to the next town over. Teddi was sure that Hawkins was quite possibly the most boring town in America.
When they arrived at the steel mill, Teddi noticed that there weren’t nearly as many cars as there had been at David’s Christmas party. The steel mill was also pretty creepy. Scratch that; very creepy. It definitely looked abandoned. The “Brimborn Steel Works” sign was so old and faded that Teddi could barely read it in the dark. She could hear the party and see a faint glow from the bonfire coming from inside, but the way that the music and voices echoed off of the old building gave Teddi a bad feeling. At least there was a payphone nearby in case some Jason Voorhees character tried to kill them all.
“Is this safe?” she asked, carefully following Steve across the gravel.
“Uhhh...sure. I mean no one’s died yet.” she wasn’t really sure if he was teasing her or not. Once they made their way inside, Teddi was immediately met with the smell of the bonfire and beer. There were a few empty and broken bottles strewn around, as well as a group of three kegs all sitting in a frothy pile of spilled beer next to a cooler. The music was coming from a boombox that was sitting up safely on an abandoned machine.
She recognized more people at this party. Heather, Freddy and Katie were all there and waved at Teddi when they saw her. Robin Buckley, a girl that Teddi was sort of friendly with and shared three classes with, was with a group of her friends. Tommy H and Carol were being the loud, obnoxious hosts of the party. They were entertaining a large group of people closest to the fire with some sort of drinking game.
And then there was Billy. He was by Tommy and Carol’s group, but somehow still off on his own. He was leaning up against a railing with a beer bottle hanging between his fingers and a cigarette between his lips. The cold must have finally gotten to him like it had Teddi; he had traded in his usual button up shirt and leather jacket for a very tight white henley and a denim shirt layered under his jean jacket. He also looked very, very bored.
As if he knew that Teddi was watching him, Billy’s eyes met hers. He watched her cooly for a moment as she moved across the large room and over to the coolers, taking a swig of his beer before his eyes drifted over to Steve who was beside her. If he felt any sort of way about the two arriving together he didn’t show it.
“Want a beer?” Steve asked, holding up two bottles. Teddi nodded enthusiastically before grabbing the beer and taking a large swig. Why had she come to this party? Of course Billy was going to show up. And while the last couple of weeks had been filled with nothing but trying to avoid Billy, that almost felt wrong now. There was this big, screaming secret between the both of them that was impossible for her to ignore. But it seemed like Billy was going to try his damndest to pretend it wasn’t there.
“Well, well!” Teddi nearly groaned at the sound of Tommy’s voice. “Look what we have here!” Tommy and Carol had turned towards Teddi and Steve, the pair looking at them with nearly identical evil grins. “Billy wasn’t enough for ya, huh, Teddi? Moving on to Harrington? You’ve been a busy girl!”
Teddi wasn’t scared of Tommy or Carol. It was obvious to her that they were both extremely insecure with the way that they both dropped Steve for Billy the moment he showed up in Hawkins. At one point back in New York Teddi had been Tommy and Carol. The big bad popular girl at school that looked down her nose at people. But now she pitied the both of them if anything. “Gee Tommy, if you were this worried about your own sex life as you are mine then Carol wouldn’t always be hitting on your friends.” she said with a slight nod to Billy. It was no secret how badly Carol wanted Billy. As soon as Tommy was out of sight, without fail, she would shamelessly flirt with Billy even though he’d never shown even the slightest interest.
Carol shifted uncomfortably beside Tommy, who was watching Teddi with narrowed eyes. Finally he smirked. “Oh yeah? And what’s after Steve then, Teddi? You gonna want a round with me too?”
Teddi rolled her eyes. “No thanks. I have enough disappointment in my life.” Tommy glared at her as a few of their friends tried to hide their laughter.
Steve held a hand up. “Alright, Tommy. I think that’s enough, huh? We’re all just trying to have a good time.”
Tommy quickly turned his attention from Teddi to Steve. “No one’s stopping you, Harrington. How’s it feel to settle for someone else’s scraps? Is she the best you can do after that prude Nancy left you for Byers? God, I hope you’re putting out, Teddi. Stevie boy’s gotta be real hard up after putting up with that priss-”
“Tommy, how about you shut the fuck up for once, huh?” heads turned at the sound of Billy’s voice. He didn’t say anything else, only flicked the butt of his cigarette away and took another drink. Tommy looked like Billy had slapped him.
Tommy looked between Billy and Teddi a few times. “Are you going soft, Hargrove? Over some lousy lay? What, are you and Steve double teaming her?” he laughed.
“Pretty sure Carol’s the one that’s into that sorta thing.” Billy said evenly.
“You piece of shit-“ Tommy spat, moving quickly towards Billy. But of course Billy didn’t back down. He matched Tommy’s strides, but Teddi stepped in before anything more could happen.
“Billy, stop. I don’t need your help.” her tone was a little pleading. She really didn’t want to see Billy do the same thing to Tommy that he had done to Steve a few months back. Especially with so many people around to witness it. That wasn’t something Billy would ever be able to come back from. Teddi could practically hear Billy’s ego shatter at her words.
“C’mon, Tommy,” Carol said with an over dramatic eye roll. She grabbed Tommy by the arm and gave him a tug.  “It’s your turn on the keg. Let them have their little lovers quarrel.” she said with a pointed look towards Steve and Teddi. This was enough to appease an already drunk Tommy much to Teddi’s relief.
“What the fuck was that?” Billy spat.
“Hey, hey. Back off, dude.” Steve took a step in front of Teddi, holding a hand out to stop Billy from coming any further.
“Get your hand off me, Harrington. Unless you want a replay of that beating I already gave you.” Billy took a step towards Steve, his shoulders held high.
Teddi wiggled her way around Steve and placed herself between the two. “What are you, cavemen? Steve, it’s fine okay? Just give me five minutes,” Steve eyed Teddi for a moment before shooting Billy a warning look and walking off. “What was what, Billy?” she asked with a tired sigh.
“I don’t get you, Larsson. You’re always telling me what an asshole I am, and I try and stick up for you and you embarrass me.”
“Because I don’t need you to stick up for me!” Teddi threw her hands up. “And frankly I’m a little surprised you give a shit after how you acted at the arcade.” she crossed her arms.
“How I acted?” Billy asked with a dry laugh. “Teddi, you’re such a goddamn pain in the ass sometimes-”
“Likewise!” she snapped. Teddi couldn’t believe how stupid she felt to think she could go out for the night and have fun. “You’re just so...ugh.” she spun around and stomped off. She had had more than enough of Billy Hargrove for the night.
Steve caught up to her as she continued to put distance between herself and Billy. “Teddi, are you okay? If you wanna get out of here-”
Teddi shook her head. “I’m fine, Steve. I’m just gonna step outside for a sec, okay?” she lied, sidestepping Steve and heading outside into the cold night air. She wanted to go home. It of course occurred to her that walking home was possibly the dumbest thing that she could do, but she’d had more than enough testosterone for the night. She had been walking for about ten minutes before she heard the rumble of the Camaro’s engine.
Billy pulled up beside her, leaning forward to get a better look at her. “The hell are you doing, Larsson?” he asked.
“I’m walking home.” she said, wrapping her arms around her in an attempt to keep warm. Billy coasted along beside her as she continued on down the road.
“You’re gonna freeze to death!” he argued. Teddi ignored him. “Teddi, get in the car.”
“No.”
“Larsson, I will pull over and put you in the car,” and Teddi definitely believed that. He’d picked her up like a ragdoll enough times for her to know better than to keep arguing. With a loud huff Teddi yanked the door open and got into the Camaro. They were both silent for a few very long and awkward moments. “Does Harrington know you ran off?” he finally asked.
Teddi crossed her arms. “...He thinks I’m getting some fresh air.” she muttered. She felt bad now for lying to Steve, but she was sure that if she called him the next morning and explained he wouldn’t be too upset with her.
Billy let out a short chuckle before going silent for another few moments. “...So, what, are you pissed at me for last night?” while Teddi was known to give him the cold shoulder after one of his outbursts, she usually got over it pretty quickly. Billy figured that he must have hit a nerve. It didn’t make him feel good to know he had upset her so much by confronting Teddi with the truth. At least it was all out in the open now. He wouldn’t need to dance around the subject anymore. It made things awkward in a different way than it had been before, but somehow this was better.
“No...I don’t know,” Teddi sighed. Her steely exterior was now gone and replaced with a glimpse of her usual bubbly self. “I think I’m more embarrassed now that you know about it if anything. I’ve been keeping it a secret for so long I didn’t expect anyone to ever know…”
Billy shifted uncomfortably. “Yeah, well, I guess it’s hard to keep a secret from someone who’s dealing with the same shit.” more silence followed.
Teddi was chewing on her bottom lip as she looked over at Billy carefully. “...Does he hurt Max?”
“No. There’s been a few times where it’s come close…” those times were starting to become more frequent. Billy wasn’t entirely sure what happened that night at the Byers’ place. After Max jammed that needle in his neck he had blacked out and had somehow managed to make it back into his own room a few hours later. Max didn’t talk about it, but Billy knew that she and her friends had run into something that made her see Neil as an insignificant threat. “She doesn’t get it. You know, one day I’m not gonna be there....Susan’s too afraid of him to do anything.” Billy was gripping onto the steering wheel tightly.
Teddi supposed she could understand how Billy could rationalize the way he was with Max. “Tough Love”. But it was much heavier on the tough part than the love. And things needed to change. Fast. “You can’t keep treating her like this, Billy,” Teddi said shaking her head. “This whole scared straight thing you have going on. It’s not any better than what our dads do to us, even if the intention is different. You have to show her that you actually give a shit about her.”
She expected him to flip out on her. To start screaming at her and telling her that she didn’t know anything about him or what went on at home. Instead he just looked over at her cooly. “And why’s that?” he asked.
“Because otherwise she’ll end up like you.” Billy knew that Teddi wasn’t trying to insult him. He wouldn’t admit that she was right though either. But she was. Neil had ruled over their household with an iron fist, and it had done nothing but turn Billy into an angry and violent guy that no one wanted to be around. And yeah, Billy’s intentions with Max were different. He didn’t want her to grow up afraid like he had. He wanted her to grow a thick skin. But his approach was the same as Neil’s. He guessed it was a good thing that Max seemed to be a hell of a lot more brave than he had ever been.
“...I’m sorry about Tommy.” he said instead.
Teddi raised her eyebrows at the comment. “I’m sorry” was a phrase she didn’t think was in his vocabulary. “Tommy’s an insecure idiot with a tiny dick. I don’t really care about what he has to say,” she cracked a smile when Billy laughed. “Besides, it’s not anything I didn’t hear back home in school or from my dad.” she shrugged.
Billy quirked an eyebrow. “Your dad?”
“He used to call me the town bicycle,” Teddi rolled her eyes. “I used to be a lot...friendlier, and we lived in this snobby, tiny neighborhood where everyone gossiped.”
Billy nearly slammed down on the breaks. “You?” he asked with a laugh. “No way, Larsson.”
Teddi sunk in her seat a little and scrunched her nose. “Oooh yeah. I was like...the worst. I was always out partying, getting in trouble, sleeping with like...anyone that was interested. I’m pretty sure that’s why I keep putting up with your shit so often. I used to be like you.” she teased.
This wasn’t the first time Teddi had given Billy a glimpse into her wild past. Even still, he had a hard time imagining it. Teddi was this bubbly, talkative, nice girl. She wasn’t anything like him. “I’m not so sure I can picture something like that, Weird Girl.”
“And why not? Even Max says that I’m super cool.” she joked.
Billy grinned and shrugged. “You’re...you know. A nice person or whatever.”
Teddi’s jaw dropped as she turned to face Billy. “Was that a genuine compliment I just heard from you, Billy Hargrove?”
He groaned. “Don’t make such a big deal out of it. I can have my moments.”
Teddi smiled, tilting her head as she watched him squirm uncomfortably in his seat. “...Do you think you’re not a nice person?” she asked.
“I don’t exactly hear it very often.”
“True...but you could be. Anything’s possible. You could try like...taking a nap or something.” she joked. But she meant what she said. If Billy was willing to put in the work he could be a guy that everyone liked. Max had said that she’d seen a change in her brother. Teddi even saw a change every once and awhile when Billy would let his guard down. Especially after tonight when he stood up for her.
Billy let out a soft snort. “Yeah, I’ll get right on that,” the Camaro turned onto Teddi’s street. “Jesus, Larsson, you could walk to my place from here.”
“Does that mean you’re gonna want to hang out more? You wanna finally play Dungeons and Dragons?” she asked, perking up.
“I’d rather be locked in a closet with Carol.” he deadpanned. Teddi rolled her eyes. Billy pulled into Teddi’s driveway and put the Camaro in park. “Well, there you go Cinderella. Back home before midnight.”
Teddi let out a small laugh and groan. “God, Hawkins is lame...thanks for the ride, Billy.”
Billy grinned widely. “Oh, you know I’m always down to give you a ride, Larsson.” he definitely didn’t miss the way she blushed at the comment before she let out a loud scoff.
“Oh my god. Goodnight, Billy.” she muttered quickly before sliding out of the car and rushing to the front door. Billy watched as she fished her keys out of one of her jacket’s pockets and slipping inside before he started to slowly pulled out of the driveway. He could probably go back to the party. He had about an hour left before he had to pick up Max from the Wheeler’s place. And he definitely didn’t want to sit out in the driveway like some kind of lame asshole.
But the door swung open and Teddi poked her head out. “Yo, Hargrove! You wanna come watch some New Year’s Rockin’ Eve?”
Billy drummed his fingers on the steering wheel for a few moments while he thought it over. His curfew was at one (thanks to Susan convincing Neil to go to the Harrington’s party) and he had nowhere else to be. So he pulled back into the driveway, shut the Camaro off and got out. He shoved his hands into his pockets and awkwardly made his way up to Teddi. “Don’t try and get fresh with me, Larsson.” he said, cracking a grin. Teddi laughed and rolled her eyes before stepping aside to let him in.
“In your dreams, Hargrove.”

Part II
“So are gonna explain to me what that was back there?” I whisper, trying to distance myself from Cindy’s nosy ears as we make our way to the parking lot.
“The guy seemed like a creep, I figured you’d rather hang out with all o’ us. It's not too late though, I'm sure I can flag down that Alex kid. Sure he’d come runnin’.” He says, stopping to look around, finding him in a crowd behind us and waving at him. I slap his arm, running to catch up with Daniel and Cindy. He follows suit, chuckling to himself. We start heading for Daniel’s cherry red mustang when Harold taps on my shoulder, a helmet in hand.
“By the way, this is my ride.” He says, climbing onto a black motorcycle.
“Oh no, that isn't happening,” I state, shooing away the helmet.
“You gotta make it believable.” He points behind me, once again waving at Alex who was visibly pissed off. I weigh my options, I could ride with Alex, and I'd be stuck with talking to him the whole party-- I could try running after Daniel and Cindy before they leave the parking lot, or I could die via motorcycle.
Somehow, dying seemed like the better option. I threw on the helmet as I climbed onto the space behind him, gripping onto the end of his denim jacket.
“You’ve never ridden on one o’ these, ‘ave you?” he asks, grabbing my wrists, wrapping them around his waist, “wouldn’t want ya fallin’ off.” With that he revs up his engine, sending us flying down the parking lot trying to catch up to Daniel.
We park right behind the mustang, people already flowing in and out of Alex Lanning’s front door. Billie Jean was blasting as we make our way inside, several hello’s and curious glances thrown our way. Daniel is at the front of our group, leading us to the backyard where a huge fire pit and pool were situated. Half naked teens are comfortably flirting and eating smores while grabbing a few beers along the way.
“You guys bring your swim trunks?” Daniel asks, already throwing his shirt at Harold. Cindy does the same, stripping off her cheer uniform, revealing a hot pink one-piece underneath.
“ ‘fraid not, didn’t know that guy was so well off.” he says, gesturing at the lavish home he was welcomed into.
“You could just wear your boxers! That’s what everyone else seems to be doing!” Cindy suggests, winking at me when Harold deviates his gaze.
“I’ll ‘ave to sit this one out I suppose.” he apologizes, giving her puppy dog eyes that no one could turn down. Her cheeks turn bright pink as she hurries off to the pool. Daniel simply shakes his head at him, following after Cindy. I hadn’t really noticed how much attention Harold was getting until I tuned back into the whispers and glances. He’s so hot, who do you think he is? I don’t know, but I’ll be sure to find out.
“Are you joinin’ them?” He asks, almost daring me to do something edgy.
“I don't have a bathing suit,” I state, walking over to the bonfire. I grab a stick, impaling a marshmallow, sticking it close to the fire. He follows me over, grabbing the graham crackers and chocolate, handing me some to make own.
“You don't seem the type t’ come t’ these things very often.” He states, blowing at his marshmallow as it catches on fire.
“And what makes you say that?” I question, for some reason a bit more offended than I should be.
“You're obviously a teacher’s pet. Preppy, do-good girl. Can't imagine you doin’ anythin’ that could get ya in trouble, ya know? You had never even ridden a bike” How could he so easily make these assumptions? We’ve just barely met and he already thinks he’s got me figured out. Just because I have school spirit and good grades doesn't mean I don't know how to have fun. How can this guy get me so worked up so quickly?
Amanda Williams-- the head cheerleader pops out of nowhere. She wraps her blood red nails around Harold’s shoulder, using it to sit herself down on his lap. She had noticeably had a bit too much to drink, along with being a little damp from being in the pool a second ago in just her bra and underwear.
“So what's your name, handsome?” She says, getting whistles and encouragement from a few party goers. Harold looks a bit startled to say the least, but that just left me seeing red.
I immediately stand up to leave, Harold looking up to give me a confused look, trying to kindly get her off of him without touching her.
“Oh, don't worry about me, I'll catch a ride with Danny and Cindy, you seem to have your hands full anyway,” I say, turning my back at him as I pull my sweater over my head, kicking my keds off as I let my skirt drop to the ground. Whistles and hollers begin as people notice me walking towards the pool, making sure my hips sway a little more than usual, chin high-- wanting to fool people that I wasn't completely uncomfortable with the shortage of clothing.
Cindy is immediately at my side, gushing at how I showed Amanda who’s number one around here. I really had no idea what had come over me, but as I looked back at Harold, a smirk was plastered on his face, impressed.
I look over at Harold, a crowd already gathering around him, mostly the baseball team and their groupies. Girls giggled at his every word, guys slightly annoyed at the attention he stole from their usual fans. I was sat at the edge of the pool, legs dipped in as Alex found his way to my side once more.
“Finally loosening up I see.” he grins, his eyes wandering for a bit too long. I immediately cross my arms over my chest, getting up to grab a drink. He follows me over, leaning against the grill, refusing to leave me alone. “So what's with that Harry guy? You two seem close” he observes.
“I gave him a tour of the school, he knows Danny somehow.” I shrug, my usual friend group consisting of him and Cindy, them usually making me feel like the third wheel even though Cindy swears she only sees him as a friend.
“Seems like he doesn’t know I’ve claimed you as my girl.” Alex smiles, the scent alcohol seeping from his lips as he leans in close, almost kissing me. I set back, and before I can give him an earful I feel a heaviness on my shoulders, a hand pulling me back slightly.
“You seem like you’ve ‘ad one too many to drink, Alex. I’m sure you’d never take advantage of a girl if you were in the right state of mind, especially in front of everyone?” Harold looks around at the party that had quieted down to eavesdrop, “ ‘cause if that were t’ happen, I’d have t’ kill ya myself.” he smiles, almost as if he wanted Alex to take him up on the offer.
Danny is immediately at my side, grabbing Alex to calm him down before he did something rash. I hadn’t even noticed my hands had made their way up to his arm, pulling him away from the brawl that had almost ensued.
“So you’re gonna fuck this guy but not me, Heather?” Alex yells from behind Danny, pushing him to the side. My grip on Harold slipped immediately, his powerful fist slamming against Alex’s face. The crowd was thrilled, the first fight of the year and it involved the captain of the football team and the mysterious new kid. Alex tackles Harold to the ground, a fist immediately landing on his cheek. Harold grabs a fist full of Alex’s hair, slamming his head against the pavement. By then Danny and three other guys pulled them apart, blood leaving a stain by the pool.
Cindy was by my side, grabbing my arm running to Harold. Danny is already dragging him out of the fence door. Cindy and I hurriedly throw on our clothes, still in shock from what had just happened. As we walk towards the bike and Mustang, Danny bursts out laughing, shaking his head and patting Harold on the back.
“Man, if you hadn’t kicked his ass I would’ve, thanks for taking one for the team.” he beams, leaning up against the hood of his car. With that the tension is broken, chuckles and giggles overtaking all of us.
“Gonna be a fun year,” Harold states, licking his lips, revealing a toothy grin.
Part IV
Hello again! I hope you’re enjoying this one, I’m still unsure of the dynamic I want Harry and Heather to have, but I guess we’ll find out! I’m still getting used to writing again, hopefully I’ll get better soon. Please leave me criticism and questions, I’d love to talk to you guys! Until next time!

There wasn’t much to do in Hawkins on weekends, especially during summer break. You could spend the day at the mall, go the pool or the movies, maybe drive out of town to the lake. The fourth of July carnival was the biggest thing the town could look forward to. Maybe someone would throw a party if their parents went out of town or someone’s older brother would buy them a keg from a couple towns over, which would get hoisted into the forest to party out there. That was the extent of excitement the town could muster.
And so, if you had a car and a few friends, cruising was an optimal night time activity. With your music turned up on the stereo and your windows pulled down, the wind whipping your hair around you and your friend’s hair, you could look over your tiny town without much care, laughing and talking with your friends. It was a simple thing, but on a good night it was fun. You could find out a lot from driving around. You always found somebody out at night, and they could tell you about a party a town over or a rumour freshly founded or even just where some cooler people were hanging out.
That Saturday, you’d planned to go cruising with your friends. It was careful procedure. You had to do your makeup and your hair and choose clothes that, when combined, made you look effortlessly cool and hot while still be casual. It was Stacy’s turn to drive, so you had all evening to prepare yourself. Now, this wasn’t exactly an intense procedure, it wasn’t prom or anything. There was no intense grooming pattern. You took down your ratty perm from the low ponytail you’d had it in all day and fluffed it up a bit. You touched up your makeup from earlier in the day, choosing a purple lip gloss, just for fun. You changed into your favourite jeans and a clean, sweat free tee shirt.  You grabbed your jean jacket, even though it was probably unnecessary for the humid night. You were last on the pickup list, living on the more diverse side of the town. That wasn’t a problem though, since Stacy would force Tina and Heather to sit in the very back since it wouldn’t be ideal to shove your ass in the backseat while someone else begrudgingly held the front seat.
The sound of Stacy’s horn blaring through your open window signalled your rush downstairs, pulling your purse off the railing, shoving your feet into your shoes, and rushing out the door before your mother could even say goodbye.
Stacy had the windows rolled all the way down and the roof down on her mother’s cherry red convertible. Tina and Heather were lounging in the back, the latter who was pouting dramatically in the far right seat, behind the driver. You popped open the door and slid inside.
“What’s the plan, girls? Anything happening?” you asked with a giddy grin, slamming the door behind you.
“Haven’t heard anything yet but there’s hope. According to Macy, Andy Withers’ parents are out of town. He’ll probably have a few friends over, which’ll turn into something to check out.” Tina explained from the back, tossing her right arm over the back of the white leather seat.
“I don’t care where we go, as long as I get five minutes alone with Billy. Gimme five minutes and he’s mine.” Heather added from her own seat.
“You’re still into that guy?” You asked, turning to Stacy who rolled her eyes and nodded. Heather had been into the new guy since she started working with him at the public pool. She’d spent the whole school year scoffing at his attempts to charm anything with tits, herself included. But the second she started spending her afternoons with him shirtless and sweaty, all bets were off. Heather had fallen lusty head over lusty heels for the guy. And Billy Hargrove didn’t give a rat’s ass about her. He didn’t give her the time of day, he barely acknowledged her outside of work. But whatever he was doing at work was enough for her to embarrass herself over him consistently.
Asking anything about Billy was a bad idea. You had just made a fatal error.
“Uh, obviously Y/N, I mean have you seen the guy?” Heather asked dramatically.
“Yeah I have I-” it didn’t matter what you said; Heather was going to talk over you. Like right now.
“He’s soooo fucking hot! I mean his abs and his arms and his cute little butt and his fucking smile? Have you seen his smile? I swear that man was crafted by the devil himself! God, what I wouldn’t give for just a piece of him, just a night! With him breathing in my ear and grunting in his gravelly voice oh my god! I could die and go to heaven right now!” Heather rambled, her head falling onto the back seat, long brown hair blowing up in the wind and heavily made up eyes squeezed tight, a giddy smile scrunching up her face.
You looked to Stacy, whose face had pulled into a grimace. “Ugh, Heather, can you reign in your hormones, the whole car’s gonna stink like fish if you keep this up.” She groaned, causing Tina grimace herself.
“Ew, Stace, do you have to be so nasty?” she cried, sliding his lime green tinted sunglasses up onto the top of her head. Heather reached up and smacked Stacy upside the head.
“Hey! No hitting the driver! Do you want me to crash this thing?!?” Stacy yelled, whipping around to sneer at Heather, who was giggling evilly from her seat, hands coming up to cover her mouth.
“Hey, no fighting you two.” You turned to Heather “We’ll keep an eye out for Hargrove and” you turned back to the front of the car “Tina will keep her out of your hair.” Heather gasped and Tina groaned, both utterly defeated and annoyed judging by their expressions in the rear view mirror.
Hawkins wasn’t exactly lively, but at night everything had a certain charm. When everything was a bit quieter and the lightening bugs were out, the stars flashing above you and the warm glow of the streetlights guiding your weaving way through town, you could almost call the tiny town beautiful. You shut your eyes, leaning your head against the back of your seat, letting the warm air brush your face and pull your hair into the air. It was a beautiful night, you almost didn’t want to find anything to do, this was sufficient for you.
Of course, when you’re least interesting in it, something decided to go down.
Stacy pulled up to the intersection on Main Street and the loud screams and clatter of another car full of teenagers pulled up next to yours. You peaked over, your eyes catching the annoyed look of Steve Harrington. His car was filled with the awful mix of Carol, Tommy H, Macy Clarke, and Mikey Wilson, all clambering to be the most annoying couple in the car.
“What’s happening?” Stacy called with a giggle, waving to Macy, who’d abandoned your little group to pal around with Mikey months ago. You secretly suspected he’d knock her up, since his dislike of condoms was known throughout the school and he’d knocked up two other girls. The big ‘A’ was a staple of being in any sort of relationship with that guy, even being his lab partner could end up with a girl at the clinic in Carmel, wondering how Mikey had gotten the money for the procedure. For now, Macy seemed happy, but you wondered how long it would last.
“Andy Withers’ brother bought him a keg! Apparently Billy’s gonna beat his keg record and anyone who challenges him! Free beer and Andy’s brother’s got his plug in, weed too!” Carol called, unlatching her lips from Tommy’s neck long enough to explain the night’s excitement.
“Harrington’s gonna beat that fucker’s record!” Mikey called, slapping the beleaguered driver’s shoulder. Steve winced, although you suspected it wasn’t from the smack Mikey had given him.
You had, unintentionally, been his first rebound after his disastrous breakup with Nancy Wheeler, an intense and intensely awkward few weeks of dating that ended with him dumping you to chase after Stacy for the rest of the year. You had taken a chance on the heartbroken kid, who in turn promised not to hurt you. And then he went around and made you hate him in one swift move. You could’ve killed the kid, luckily Stacy shoved him off at every advance and assured you that he wasn’t worth the effort.
The glare you were shooting him could’ve killed a man. It should’ve killed him. You suspected it slowly was.
“See you guys there!” Stacy called as the light turned green and Steve shot off like a bullet. Stacy was quick to follow, much to the rest of the car’s delight. You weren’t super excited to be heading to some shitty party that the cops would break up in an hour. Heather would find her way to the front of the crowd to watch Hargrove sweat and drool all over the keg and then waste beer to assert his masculinity, and then like clockwork, he’d ignore her and she’d spend the rest of the night whining about it. Stacy and Tina would find some guys to glom onto and you’d be left in the corner, nursing a beer, stuck at that dumb party until the cops showed, and then you drive your drunk friends’ home.
What a great night.
Even worse, stupid Andy Withers lived like, five minutes from where you were, so you didn’t even have time to convince your dumb friends to turn back. Stacy parked a bit down the road, for the safety of her mother’s expensive car, and you began the short trek to his house, following the blasting music.
“Alright ladies, let’s split up and find some fun, we meet at the car when the cops come, anyone not there gets left behind. Y/N has the keys.” Stacy handed you the keys by their lucky rabbit’s foot keychain and you pocketed them. Stacy’s tight denim skirt had no pockets and the others weren’t trusted to drive stick shift.
Stacy and Tina paired off, probably spotting the Gardner twins, Zach and Matt, who they’d been desperate to get with all year, something about wanting to compare and see if they truly were identical. Heather rushed out to the backyard, to find the keg and hopefully Billy.
For some reason, you decided to follow Heather. Something about that scene sounded more intriguing than sitting in the living room, watching people dry hump. Watching Hargrove kick Harrington’s ass at something would be pretty fun.
Except, when you got outside, Harrington was in the air and people were screaming. “Come on buddy, you’ve almost got him!” you heard Tommy H scream, holding up half of his body. You furrowed your brow, finding Heather in the crowd and taking up the spot next to her. Steve tapped out a few seconds later, right as the crowd cheered wildly. He must have beat Billy’s record, not that you knew what it was.
“You tied him man, you didn’t beat him.” Mikey said as Steve’s feet hit the ground. Steve nodded, breathing hard as he stepped back, gesturing to Billy to take the place in front of the keg.
“Come on Hargrove you can beat him.” Tommy cried, pushing Billy into position. The ladies of the crowd cheered wildly and, with a shrug, Billy slapped the keg and Tommy and Mikey lifted Billy up by his ankles. The crowd started counting out the seconds as he lasted thirty, forty, fifty seconds, then a minute. According to Heather, to beat the record he still had another forty seconds to go to meet the record. And by the looks of him, Billy was already giving in.
“Come on Hargrove!” you screamed, turning everyone’s attention on to you, including Billy, who made a noise of confusion. You found his eyes as he lifted his head slightly. You mouthed ‘drink up bitch’ at him, giving a small nod.
“Thirty-eight, thirty-nine, one forty! Forty-one, forty-two, forty-three, forty-four, forty-five-” the crowd called. Billy slapped the can and Tommy and Mikey dropped him. He spit out a massive mouthful of cheap beer, slapping his chest as the crowd cheered. Steve slinked away and Heather ran to congratulate him. You took that as your cue to wander back inside. You shoved your hands in your pockets, starting your quest for the singular drink you were gonna be able to have since you were going to have to drive the whole team home. Winding your way into the kitchen and into the fridge, you found a can of diet Tab, not exactly your poison but it would to the trick to keep you occupied while you waited for the cops to show. You grabbed a red plastic cup and poured the drink in, pausing as it fizzed to hold the cup over the sink and then tossing the can away, heading back into living room to watch the scene go down. Someone was blasting Prince in the room and its rug had turned into a dance floor for horny teens. You watched the crowds grind and rock against one another with a bored expression, crossing your arms over your chest, taking occasional sips from your plastic cup, trying not to cringe at the awful taste.
“Who left you all alone over here?” a husky voice breathed in your ear. You leaned back, snapping your head around to meet the eye of Billy Hargrove. He was looking you over with this look-you couldn’t explain it. His eyes were on fire and his tongue had lapped out of his mouth, running over his lower lip. He looked at you as though you were the coldest drink in the hottest desert and he was about to lap you up.
It made your stomach turn.
“Nobody leaves me anywhere. I chose to be here.” You huffed, turning your attention back to the crowd in front of you. You found Tina and Stacy, who had indeed found The Gardner twins and had somehow gotten them to dance. Well, to stand there while the two grinded into them as the twins grinned like fools down at them.
“Is that right?” Billy grinned, leaning into the space you’d made between you.
“That’s right.” You replied. Stacy caught your eye and pulled away from whichever Gardner twin she’d chosen, saying something to him before bounding over to you.
“Hey, so me and Tina are gonna leave with Zach and Matty, can you make sure Heather gets home alright?” she asked, bouncing in her white New Balance’s.
“Heather can handle herself; I’ll tell her what’s happening. She’ll get home alright.” You reached into your pocket, pulling out the keys “Here, get those guys outta here before the cops bust this shit.” You said, jingling the keys in front of her face. Stacy grabbed the keys with a cheeky grin, nodding before rushing off towards the boys and Tina.
As if on cue, Andy Withers busted into the living room, screaming at the top of his lungs as someone cut out the music “The cops are coming!”
Everyone ran in different directions. Tina and Stacy grabbed the twins and busted out the back door through the kitchen, abandoning you and Heather as expected. You’d lost Heather after going inside and away from the keg, so the only hope of finding her was to get outside and hopefully meet her somewhere by the car.
“Well, good luck!” you said quickly, nodding to Billy before making a break for it, rushing the back door and hopping the fence. You cut between the houses and onto the sidewalk as the police van, sirens blaring, pulled up in front of the house and two annoyed looking cops climbed out. You caught sight of the bearded Officer Hopper, who you were already in shit with. You rushed off towards the red convertible, looking around frantically for Heather.
But Heather wasn’t here. Tina and Stacy rushed to the car. “Don’t be a drag, Y/N.” Tina whined, shoving you out of the way as they got in. You could’ve killed her. She was such a bitch sometimes. You found your balance again, making a break down the sidewalk, running as fast as you could.
The rumble of an engine pulling up to you startled you and you turned to see the blue Camaro and Billy Hargrove waving you over. “Get in, Y/N!” he called. You weren’t going to argue with fucking Hopper on your path and a yearlong grounding in store when your mother found out where you were. You got in without question. Billy sped off before you could even pretend to put on a seatbelt, heading as far away from the scene as possible.
“You know my name?” you blurted over the wind rushing through the open windows. You could’ve jumped out of the moving car right then and there. He looked at you like you were crazy.
“Yeah, course I do.” He replied simply.
You hadn’t realized that he had even noticed you before that night. Stacy, Tina, and Heather stole the spotlight most of the time. Stacy was the pretty popular one who boys adored, Tina always threw the year’s biggest rager, and Heather knew everything about everyone. You were just…their plus one most of the time. Sure, you brought the music and the quippy jokes, you held the sleepovers during the summers off and bought the ice cream when someone got dumped, but you weren’t the focus to outsiders. Your friends adored you, but the rest of Hawkins? They tended to forget that you existed. Even your parents forgot about you.
Billy dropped his speed significantly once you were away from the party, which was a bit of a disappointment to you. You’d just started to enjoy the ride. He seemed to be looking for something. You assumed it was a place to drop you off.
“You can just drop me at the Pick n’ Save.” You said softly, pointing out the spinning sign, illuminated under a dozen streetlamps. Billy grunted, pulling into the parking lot. You climbed out, mumbling a quick thank you, and made your way over to the curb. You expected him to speed off again, but he didn’t. Instead he watched you for a moment before parking his car and stepping out.
“What are you doing?” he asked incredulously.
You shrugged “Whenever we go to these stupid parties, it’s our rule that if we get separated we meet here. I never found Heather, so I have to wait to see if she shows up here.” You explained, taking a seat on the cold cement curb.
“What happens when she doesn’t show?”
“Then I go home. Heather’s a big girl, but if I don’t wait she’ll never let me here the end of it.” you replied, letting out a deep sigh through your nose.
Billy nodded, pulling his pack of cigarettes from the breast pocket of his red silk shirt, mostly unbuttoned and its short sleeves rolled up even higher. He pulled one from the pack and lit it, offer you one. You took it, even though you only smoked at parties, and lit it off the end of Billy’s, tagging a long drag.
“Safety only matters when I’m not there waiting…” you muttered on the exhale.
“You just gonna sit here, on the cold ass ground, waiting for someone who might show up?” Billy asked. You nodded. He nodded back dumbly, turning and heading to his car. You assumed he was leaving, but he pushing himself onto the hood of his car and slapped the spot next to him, motioning you over. You did as he asked, because you didn’t want a standoff to ensue with him.
“You don’t have to wait here with me.” You said, standing in front of him, crossing your arms over your chest.
“I’m not gonna leave you here alone. Don’t need shit on my conscious if you get hurt.” He replied, smacking the spot again. You pushed yourself onto the hood, pulling your knees up to your chest and wrapping your arms around them.
“So…what’s up with Tina and Stacy?” Billy asked.
“Huh?”
“The Gardner twins?” his voice was full of disgust. It made you laugh a little bit. His reaction wasn’t exactly far off: the twins were some of the worst people in Hawkins. They were crude and cruel, insensitive and just plain stupid.
“Oh I don’t know…they’ve had this thing about them since Tina’s Halloween thing…they want to know how identical, identical twins are. The Gardner’s are the only identical twins who fit their standards: boys and our age.” You explained, focusing on the moths hovering around the lights outside the building.
“Jesus…that’s fucking stupid.” Billy muttered, looking over to you. You looked so wide eyed and a little scared, it was cute.
“At least it’s a goal. And they achieved it. Better than some people...” You shrugged, turning to meet Billy’s eye. He looked embarrassed and turned away quickly. You turned away too, out of principle.
“What about Heather?” he asked.
“What do you mean what about Heather?” you countered, furrowing your brow.
“What’s her deal?” he replied.
“How do you not know?” Billy shrugged. “She’s been chasing after you all summer.”
Billy scowled “Oh yeah, I know about that. But why? She already got Harrington, isn’t that enough?”
“What?”
“You didn’t hear? After Harrington got dumped, he dated some girl for a bit, and then Heather jumped in. They got caught doing it in the locker room. Then he moved on to Tracey Knowles.” He told you.
You didn’t know what to say. Heather didn’t. She knew. She didn’t even really like him. She wouldn’t do that to you…
She totally would.
“That bitch…” you muttered to yourself.
“Huh?”
“I was the first girl. I was dating Steve after he got his ass dumped. And Heather fucked him. She fucked him for no fucking reason. I could kill her.” You cried, smacking the hood of his car violently.
Billy let out a low whistle “Wow…what a bitch…”
You nodded “Always has been.” Then, something dawned on you. “And now, she wants a full set. Why only have boned one of the most popular guys in school when you can have both?” you bit bitterly.
“You think?”
“I know. She’s a collector, just like Tina and Stacy. Just another notch on her lipstick case.” You replied.
“Damn…” he muttered. He almost looked offended, which was not your intended goal, but it was certainly shocking. Billy Hargrove never showed any emotions other than anger, annoyance, or vague amusement. He wasn’t shocked or hurt by anything. You guessed, that was until now.
“I mean…it’s a genuine want. If I have to hear about how hot you are one more time I’m gonna kill the girl.” You chuckled awkwardly, rubbing your covered arms as if you were cold.
“Yeah I don’t like her.” Billy said coldly.
“Oh.” You replied “Well then never mind.” You knocked the ash off the end of your cigarette, taking one final drag before dropping the butt off the side of the car, to burn out on the pavement.
“I’m not part of a matching set.” He added, equally bitter as before.
“I get it. Sorry I brought it up.” You replied defensibly.
You both went silent for a moment as Billy cooled down again. He spoke first. Maybe you were too quiet for him.
“It was a cool party, though, right up until the feds showed up. Andy knows how to throw a good party.” Billy commented into the dead air. You looked at him, completely bemused for a moment, unsure as to whether or not he’d truly fed into his ego or if he just didn’t know.
“Andy Withers parties suck.” You replied, eying him over to try to figure out how drunk he was. He looked distressingly sober.
“On what planet?!? Everybody was there!”  Billy countered with a laugh.
“Everyone was there because you were there. If you weren’t nobody would go except for a crowd of wannabes. They always get shut down so fast that they aren’t worth getting caught for.” You explained with a smirk.
“Yeah?” Billy said with a growing look of satisfaction.
“Yeah.”
Billy grinned, leaning back onto his windshield. “That’s the best news I’ve heard all day.” He said, pulling a second cigarette out of the pack, tossing the butt he’d been holding between his teeth at the farthest streetlight. “I mean that’s almost the teen dream.”
“What’s missing?” you asked, looking down at him. You’d  let go of your legs, letting them dangle over the hood and you leaned back on your palms, stretching your back.
“The girl.” He smirked, looking you over with the girl.
“Oh yeah? Who’s your dream girl? And don’t pull any of that shit where you try to get me to sleep with you by saying it’s me. That won’t happen.” You asked, lulling your head to the side to look him over.
“Lemme think then.” He said, leaving a massive pause as his face pulled into a firm line, squinting his eyes as though the process was taking some serious effort. It probably was: Billy had slept a majority of the population in Hawkins, it was even rumoured that he was sleeping with someone’s mom, although nobody could decide who it was.
“Samantha Baker.” He finally said quietly.
“Who?” you asked, thinking it over thoroughly. There was only one Samantha in your grade, Samantha White, who was the only punk left at Hawkins High. But the name sounded so familiar to you, you couldn’t place it at first.
And then it hit you like a freight train.
“Wait. Like Molly Ringwald’s character in 16 candles?!?” you cried, eyes going wide as the full moon hanging above you. Billy nodded far too confidently for what he had admitted and you couldn’t help from laughing your ass off.
His dream girl wasn’t a porn star or a rock star or even a Playboy bunny. It was sixteen year old Molly Ringwald. It didn’t make sense to you at all.
“Seriously? Why?” you asked, utterly shocked.
Billy shrugged, his confidence draining significantly. “I don’t really know I just…she really digs that guy, Jack or whatever, I like a girl who really likes me.” He said.
That made too much sense.
Your smile turned to a knowing smirk. “So, you like a girl who has no other personality or interests other than you?”
Billy’s expression soured “You don’t get it.” he mumbled.
“When did you even see that movie?”
His body curled away from you, suddenly turning very shy, which was not an expected bit of behaviour from the macho tough guy of Hawkins. “I took in a double feature at the Hawke with Carol.”
That didn’t make sense.
“When did you go out with Carol? Her and Tommy are the item of Hawkins High, they only break up once a semester-” then it hit you.
“Was it when Tommy had mono? Or when they broke up because Carol found out who he got mono from?” you asked. You felt like you were on Jeopardy, about win the Daily Double, excitement coursed through your veins.
Billy held up two fingers, signally that the second answer was correct. He cleared his throat before explaining himself “Tommy promised to take her and then they broke up and she was moping around so I said I would take her if we saw something I wanted to see too…”
“So you willing took Carol to see a romantic comedy?”
Billy nodded. You were very surprised. This was a very new side of Billy that you would have never in a million years expected to find underneath the sneering asshole who sped around town.
“Well aren’t you a sweetheart?” you laughed as Billy pulled a pouty, embarrassed and annoyed look.
“Don’t go spreading it around, I have a reputation to uphold.” He puffed out his chest with pride.
“Yeah sure.” You giggled, crossing an ‘x’ over your heart and holding up your right hand, a silent and solemn swear to not tell anyone.
“What about you? Who’s your dream guy?” he asked, pushing himself up onto one elbow, looking you over the same way you did to him.
“Oh I don’t know…I don’t really have one. I mean every girl likes Jake Ryan… I guess him.” You replied. You honestly didn’t have an answer. Heather’s latest dream guy was Bender from The Breakfast Club, Tina liked Tom Cruise, and Stacy weirdly adored Jay Gatsby. But you never really had a definitive answer. Jake Ryan was the closest thing you had.
“Who?”
“The guy from 16 Candles, you called him Jack.”
“Why him?” Billy scrunched up his face in disgust.
“Hm…because…well he’s hot for one thing.” Billy rolled his eyes at that comment, but you continued anyway “And because he really wants to be loved. He sees Samantha and, even though he knows almost nothing about her, he likes her. I guess I like him because he will see you when nobody else does.” You explained, more to yourself than to him.
Billy nodded and you believed, for the first time in the whole conversation, that he was actually listening. “So, you want a guy who does the bare minimum?” He replied coldly.
“Better than what I get from most guys. I’m usually forgotten in favour of Tina or Stacy.” That sounded more pathetic than you wanted to, but you didn’t try to take it back.
Billy let your words hang in the air, unsure of what to do with them. That was a bit too heavy for him to tackle, he didn’t know how. He’d be lying if he said he’d noticed you before tonight. But you caught his eye at the party and he intended to hold onto you for awhile longer, even if all he had was your attention and nothing else.
You chuckled to yourself, a thought coming to your mind “You know…if you want a girl to adore you and nothing else…Heather is that.” Billy looked to you with a scowl. You pressed on “She loses her personality with whatever guy she’s going with and assimilates to what they like. She’s like a chameleon or something. It’s really weird.”
“That makes Harrington Ryan or whatever.” Billy countered, leaning in closer with a cocky smirk that you found more charming than discomforting.
“Any reasoning beyond you trying to piss me off?” you asked, matching his expression.
“He wants exactly what that guy wanted. A serious relationship or whatever. The guy acts like he wants casual shit now, but everyone knows that he’s looking for a girl like his ex to settle down with.” He explained vaguely, gesturing off into the distance. “He’s like that guy but clueless.”
You scrunched up your mouth, humming an annoyed tune. “That’s…distressingly accurate.” You admitted, sighing softly “Maybe I don’t know what I want…”
“I know what I want.” Billy said.
“Yeah?” you asked, watching the lightening bugs begin to swirl around the car. You hadn’t noticed how dark it had gotten and how late it must have been. You’d definitely missed your curfew. But being grounded didn’t really matter to you now.
“I wanna kiss you.” You hadn’t realized how close he was until his hot breath fanned your neck once again.
You giggled softly “I’m not gonna hook up with you, Hargrove, I don’t even know you.”
“I didn’t ask for that…all I asked for was a kiss…” he was looking down at you through his lashes and his eyes were so blue. “All I want is a kiss…” And when he leaned down to kiss you, you didn’t pull away. Maybe you were bored or lonely or simply horny, maybe you were mad at Heather for treating you like shit, or maybe it was because Billy Hargrove was quite possibly the prettiest boy you’d ever met, but the kiss was the best you’d had thus far. You didn’t believe in the whole electricity, fireworks thing everybody else seemed to feel from kissing someone. But this was damn close. You didn’t want it to end. Neither of you did.
“Y/N you fucking bitch! I can’t believe you!” the shrill scream made you pull away.
Heather made it after all.
“Oh go screw Harrington again.” You yelled back, rolling your eyes at her stunned and angry face.  You pulled Billy back in for another kiss with a smirk, which he didn’t pull away from.
Sure, it was petty. But being petty with Billy’s lips attached to yours didn’t feel too bad.
