every so often I discover new things I'm unhappy with about the Sandman adaptation and each one is pettier than the last

what do you MEAN the word battle is between Dream and Lucifer? no it's NOT. it's between Dream and Choronzon who's acting on Beelzebub's behalf it's about the petty politics of Hell which is in large part what Lucifer finds so tiresome.

#red said #i need to block the sandman tag i just have such a hateon for this show #that i have not and will not watch #even for understandable adaptional decisions! #like it's a LOT of story and not all of it is intuitive and i understand the need to simplify it and pare down the cast #it's entirely fair to say whittle out the triumvirate which frankly doesn't play THAT much part in the story #but also if you're not introducing Choronzon and Beelzebub here it does require shifting a big chunk of the endgame story of Seasons of Mist #cause who. is he bargaining with from hell who has a grudge against him. if the person he's clashed with in hell is Lucifer #who's the one giving up the key and initiating the plot #see this is why. you shouldn't adapt the story you should leave it alone :( #it's a story that is DESIGNED for the language and reading style of comics!!!!!!!!!!! #the visuals don't work onscreen cause the imagery is about panel to panel juxtaposition!!!!! #the plot doesn't work onscreen because the comic is reliant on the reader's expectation that they're reading part of an established world #cause it's marketed to superhero comics fans! so it can make broad gestures towards how the world works and expect you to extrapolate! #but tv and film don't work like that! we expect to have things much more fully explained in screen media! #even now that extended universe screen media is popular it still isn't the norm #it's not the foundation of the narrative language of film and tv the way it is with comics #tv already has less space than comics to tell the same story because it's timebound in a way comics are #it can't montage through scenes as fast or make as many jumps shot to shot as comics cause that would be overwhelming and confusing #and then WITHIN that if you have to stop and explain who people are you HAVE to shrink the cast #TV stories just don't have space for the kinds of huge-cast complex-interwoven-plot storytelling that comics do #especially if they want to have ANY time at ALL for slower character moments #so you gotta cut stuff down #like yeah your average floppy is what. 32 pages including covers and ads? #and your average episode of TV is 30-60 minutes #but a) that script is probably not much longer than the finished comic #and b) it needs to be way more focused because as i say comics language let's you jump around #in a way that screen language doesn't #you can't do the two important lines from a conversation then move onto the next thing #it feels jarring and rushed in film

Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :

Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources

Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)

Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women

Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women

Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)

Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)

Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community

Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS

Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough

Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media

Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards

Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories

Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")

And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue

Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

I also got really invested in the sandwich I had a few weeks ago despite it only lasting like 15 minutes. You must embrace the ephemeral. You must be willing to love things that may not love you back, that might betray you, or that may die an untimely death. As the great philosopher Mr. Mitchell Lee Hedberg said "I'm not gonna stop doing something because of what happens at the end."

please consider how you engage with aaron bushnell's death. you may react to it as you will, but it's crucial to remember that his death was specifically a call to action. it was not meant solely to shock but to draw attention to a vast moral hypocrisy: that to many, a soldier dying in a campaign backed by the U.S. government is noble, even if the soldier kills innocents to do so, even if the cause is morally bankrupt--but this? this is insanity. a man taking his own life, on his own terms, in an attempt to help others while hurting nobody else, is somehow less rational and more horrifying than the mass killing of civilians.

of course aaron's death was horrific. but as he said beforehand, it is realistically no more horrific than what's happening in gaza. if we can't stomach this, then why can we stomach children being bombed? thousands being starved? for all that self immolation is, it brings death in a matter of minutes. it is a fraction of the amount of pain, fear, and grief that people in gaza are experiencing. it's just that we are able to quantify it. and this tiny, quantifiable sliver of horror is still so unbelievably awful. how can anyone bear to think about anything else when this horror is happening a millionfold in palestine? this is the question aaron bushnell was asking. and he wanted you to face it, head-on, watching him burn to death.

I've been seeing people make fanart. minimalist graphics to sell on t-shirts. to commodify his death, to mythologize it not a day afterwards, is not only in poor taste but a hindrance to his message. the answer is not commodification, nor is it defeatism, nor is it rejoicing in his death. if you want to honor aaron's legacy, take action. channel your horror and your outrage into making a material change. this wasn't about him. this was about palestine. remember that it was always about palestine.
