THE FIRST HALF OF CHAPTER 4 IS NOW LIVE!

Everyone, I’ve been working on this for months now, and the impressive and also sad part is; it’s only halfway done! But it’s also 60k words and brings the average playthrough of the demo to 65k words long, so I figured it was worth uploading. Can’t go too long without an update, right?

In this update, pair with Lance and Alvarez as you infiltrate the abandoned warehouse with the S.W.A.T. team on a mission to take down the suspects and end put a close on this case once and for all! There are a lot of different branches to this one. Like… maybe more than I realistically needed. But, I wanted people to be able to craft their own story and make sure they had something to come back to a second time around if they were so inclined. I may even go back and add a little more to parts of this scene before the official release, but that’s a discussion for another day.

The Bureau (2022) is an adventure zine for Goblin Archives’ Liminal Horror RPG (a horror hack of Cairn), though conversion rules are included for Agents of ODD, The Company and Mothership.

Basically, this is an RPG version of Remedy’s 2019 videogame Control. There are some other influences, and a good number of new and interesting ideas, but the framework is all Contol: a government agency devoted to studying extradimensional incursions, in a weird high rise headquarters that re-arranges itself, whose hubristic delving into the unknown results in extraplanar hijinx, and so on. I feel like Control inspired a ton of RPG material in its wake, but this is my pick for the zine that encapsulates that vibe the best. The aesthetic, which pits the banal rigor of bureaucracy against the chaos of intruding realities, is on point.

There’s a good balance here between a disorienting, shifting environment and several clear story lines that emerge through play. Basically, there is one BIG problem in the building that has created a lot of little problems that need solving, though doing so has ambiguous results. And that’s all I will say about that, lest I spoil anything.

Bottom line: a solid adventure, a good foundation for an ongoing campaign and an excellent start for Liminal Horror.

They drive a 𝘔𝘪𝘵𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘪 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦

𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐲 has an older brother named 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐞, & despite their strained relationship has tried to make sure he's safe & doing “okay” (+ they somehow still love him deep-down in their heart) ... he's the only living family member they have & they're terrified of loosing him too (even if dealing with him leaves them both drained, sometimes monetarily, & agitated) 😔

𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐞 is actually the reason their combat skills focus on defence, they took self-defence classes in their teen years to help keep them safe during any of his future “episodes”

They're NOT good at handling acts of aggression/anger directed at them & tend to become startled if people make loud noises/shout (I wonder if 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐞 has anything to do with their PTSD 🤔)

They've always loved TTRPGs, especially horror-based ones like “𝘒𝘜𝘓𝘛: 𝘋𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘓𝘰𝘴𝘵” (horror-based media helped them deal with the real horror that is their life 👉😎👉)

They always strive to be as professional as possible at all times

Despite being an inherently reserved person, 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐲 learned to mask their introverted nature quite well; they appear quite charming even when they'd rather be anything but (which definitely helped them in their professional life ... outside->😊 inside->😒)

Because of 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐞'𝐬 “situation”, 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐲 refuses to take ANY medication (prescription or otherwise) that may have addictive properties (& seeing 𝐒𝐚𝐦 after he missed the funeral, with an empty bottle of pills on the floor, was EXTREMELY triggering)

Their personal space is very important to them, having it suddenly encroached on (moreso by strangers) stresses them out ... they're especially sensitive when it comes to anyone touching their neck (one of 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐞'𝐬 episodes ended with them being choke-slammed against a wall) 😖

Jeremy opens the door, looking the same as always, the bags under his eyes a little deeper, his hair a little more mussed, more discarded cups of coffee littering his desk then usual. When he sees the Bureau he sighs and pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration.

I’ve been dying (and a bit anxious) to write this for quite a while, but I will be posting the first 2 chapters of my SOMBRA Lars AU fanfic on AO3 soon!

BACKGROUND INFO:

- Her parents are prominent fashion designers in Paris.

- She wanted to follow in her parent’s footsteps and become a fashion designer as well, until her father got exposed for working for SOMBRA by using child labor to get more recruits for them in Europe. (At that time though, she didn’t know that it was SOMBRA nor of its existence.)

- Her broken pedestal towards her father combined with her love for mysteries made her decide to pursue criminology in Grimsborough, America and become a detective.

- She has astigmatism, thus she has to wear glasses. She would rarely wear contacts as she finds them to be quite uncomfortable whenever she wears them.

- She considers herself to be an ambivert, as she wants to observe you and your vibe first. (This is one of the traits that makes her a good detective.)

- She LOVES books, especially mystery/thriller ones!

- Is quite timid and shy once you first meet her, but treats you like family when she gets close to you.

- Is a HUGE perfectionist. She can sometimes be a bit condescending if the job isn’t done right.

Yes, I put the Criminal Case events in the present timeline so I won’t be too confused about time skips and basically the passage of time there.

Will I make a Criminal Case rewrite about her in the near future? Maybe, when college doesn’t kill me too much. In the meantime, I’m excited to be sharing my fanfic with you soon!

Next Week On Patreon - Nameless Legends!

Alright everyone, time for a little tumblr post here. Next week on the Patreon is a first look at the world I'm contemplating playing around with after The Bureau series is over. Still a long ways out, but if I write scenes related to that world for content here on Patreon, I'll slowly build up a lot of content I can use to kickstart myself into that world when the time is right!

Nameless Legends -

is an idea I had that was kind of a mix of the Fate anime series and the Soul Eater series. Heroes and villains alike get pulled from the past at random when fate deems they have a chance to redo a regret so large that they feel their life was unfulfilled. People in history or stories told that aren't part of the stories themselves. Their names never come up. Their own stories never told. It is a chance for them to be remembered by whatever brings them back.

The catch? They are always tied to a person living in the modern day for one reason or another. They are bound to them by fate and feel a pull so strong that it makes it hard for them to rip themselves away, even if they wanted to. The PC is one such person.

You, the player, will choose in the beginning of the game which notable person of old you will be the bloodline of; the infamous Anne Bonny or the noble Arthur Pendragon. Depending on what bloodline you pick will determine what nameless legend will appear by your side.

This first look into the story and the world introduces one of those legends. A pirate by the name of Charles Connolly. Her Irish accent is only outshined by her ruthlessness with a blade, and that certainly shows in this upcoming short story that will be available on the Patreon NEXT THURSDAY!

A hack of Cairn from Goblin Archives, Liminal Horror takes the barely-there D&D framework of that earlier game and applies to the tropes of investigative horror. It works shockingly well! We also touch on The Mall and The Bureau, two scenario zines. The Mall has intriguing mechanics for introducing stress-related agendas in play that are particularly exciting.
