No hardcore fandom has ever died so quickly and so completely as Veronica Mars. This is the story of its murder.

They should study Veronica Mars in Hollywood. I'm serious. It's an incredible story of how to go from "loud, passionate fanbase with its own fandom name that campaigns and advocates constantly for it" to "absolutely zero fucking interest" damn near OVERNIGHT with just ONE epically terri-bad decision.

If you weren't there, you don't understand: From 2007 to 2014, the fandom — the "Marshmallows," as they called themselves — were everywhere in the Internet's geek spaces, my friends. They routinely beat the drum about the series' three seasons and its excellence, lamented its cancellation, pushed others to give the show a try, and always - ALWAYS - proudly and loudly called for the series to be revived.

FULL DISCLOSURE/CONFESSION: I've not even watched that much Veronica Mars, frankly... ? Yeah, I'm sorry! it does seem pretty good from like the four-or-five hours I've experienced firsthand. I just never took the time to sit down with it. Regardless, I find fandoms and their dynamics — both how they operate internally and how they display to others externally — deeply fascinating. And I honestly find them easier to study from the outside than the inside. Like, if I'm IN a fandom, I'm more likely to stay in my corner and ignore places that seem negative. But being on the outside lets me just... absorb what's out there, looking into every forum without judgment. It's like studying pop-culture sociology or something? And it helps that I'm very close to some serious(-ly burnt) Marshmallows. It makes it so much easier to find and absorb the gamut of the fandom.

Besides: There is NO fandom story I've ever seen that's anything like what happened to Veronica Mars and the Marshmallows.

(Time to insert a brief explainer for the uninitiated: Veronica Mars was a TV series that aired from 2004-2007 on the now-deceased UPN network wherein Kristen Bell played the titular character, a high school girl whose single dad was a private detective in the fictional community of Neptune, California. She grew up working "unofficially" as his assistant, which meant that she herself was effectively a teenage private detective.

The three core elements of the series were: 1) Veronica investigating each week's big mystery with plenty of quips and snark, 2) Watching Veronica's various relationships develop and shift, with most of the focus given to a) her relationship to her father and b) Her romantic pursuits (which began as the Veronica/Duncan/Logan triangle before eventually becoming focused on the slow-burn, off-on Veronica/Logan love story), and 3) The gradual development of that season's "mytharc" — the overarching BIG MYSTERY that doesn't get resolved or wrapped until the season finale. So it went over the course of two seasons that took place in high school and the third, shorter season that was at the start of Veronica's collegiate career.)

Just how big and how passionate were the Marshmallows? WELL! When series creator Rob Thomas (not the Matchbox 20 guy) and star Kristen Bell announced the Kickstarter campaign for the Veronica Mars movie in March 2013, it achieved its heretofore-unprecedented goal of TWO MILLION GODDAMN DOLLARS within less than 12 hours. At that time, it was the biggest Kickstarter goal to ever succeed — and certainly the fastest to reach that kind of height. Fans fell OVER themselves to pay out for it. Hell, my own significant other was DEEP in the tank for VM at the time and invested enough to get multiple t-shirts as backer rewards as well as a disk copy of the movie when it eventually came home.

And AFTER the movie hit in 2014? It was thankfully beloved and embraced! The once-teenage characters were adults who were actually out living on their own and working for a living, but the fandom had grown up with them, so it wasn't like they were begging for them to stay young students. They embraced Adult Veronica and her new adventure. The fandom rejoiced loudly and continued to be all over the geek side of the Internet... where they, of course, still wanted more. Sure, there were new novels in the aftermath (which were written by the creator of the series), but most of the Marshmallows were calling for more movies or a streaming revival.

And then, at long last... season four was actually announced. And there was much (premature) rejoicing yet again.

Yes, Veronica Mars returned for a fourth season on Hulu in 2019. It was just eight episodes, and it was heavily centered on one season-long mystery instead of sprinkling that amongst a bunch of smaller ones, but it would still feature the same ol' Veronica. They promised a new, more "adult" mystery/investigation plus a strong focus on Veronica and Logan's love story.

New Hulu purchased the rights to the first three seasons and hyped up its presence on the platform while marketing the return for the new run. The marketing team played up the most popular quips from the show's history plus put out TONS of stuff centered on the Logan/Veronica ship to pump up the fans.

The season was dropped all at once using the classic Netflix "binge" model in July 2019. And then... afterwards?

There was a brief explosion of LOUD RAGE from the Marshmallows at what series creator Rob Thomas had to done to burn and spite the fandom and ruin his own goodwill.

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4: See, at the end of the movie, Veronica and Logan finally entered into a long-term relationship. In season four, they've been dating for years, and Logan proposes marriage. But of course there has to be drama/obstacles: In this case, Veronica isn't sure she's ready to marry... or capable of being in a marriage. Ah, but of course she eventually realizes how much Logan means to her. The two are married, and, in the season finale... Logan is killed by a car bomb in the penultimate scene. The final scene is a flashfoward to a year later, where Veronica leaves Neptune alone.

For most fandoms, that'd be a memorable point of pain. A big ol' speed bump that ultimately throws some people off the bus, leaving only the die-hards. But the fact that fans had been invested in this relationship for literally 15 years and that Hulu (and creator Rob Thomas) had heavily marketed the new season as being a big romantic event for the ship... it was too much. Unlike the aftermath of the Star Wars sequels, there was no lingering group of die-hard fans who were open to whatever was next — at least no significant one. I did some Googling and could only find TWO people who still wanted another season.

Funnily enough? Critics LOVED this. Hell, Vanity Fair infamously penned an editorial about how Veronica Mars had "finally grown up" with this finale. I suppose all the other murders and deaths and drug overdoses and r*pe weren't "mature" enough before now for... some... reason. (The same editorial also featured the author openly hating on Veronica ever being in a relationship because it causes "arrested development" and declaring that the movie -- which was acclaimed by both critics AND fans alike, I remind you -- was a lame dud. So. The writer must be a reeeaaaal fun person.)

But a series doesn't live based on critical acclaim, as it turns out. The fandom was murdered overnight. "Marshmallows" stopped appearing in geek spaces online entirely. No one expressed interest in seeing the next season or the next movie. The constant flow of fan AMVs on YouTube and fanfics on AO3 dried up to nothing or damn nearly so.

Since 2019 ? Nothing. Chirping crickets. An intensely dedicated fandom of 12 years was just... vaporized.

I've never seen anything like it before OR since.

That's why it's so fucking fascinating.

So what went wrong?

Creator Rob Thomas was adamant about two things: ONE, the series was intended to be a noir show, which meant there couldn't be any happiness for its protagonist. And TWO, the death of Logan was necessary to evolve and grow the series.

Thomas thought that having Veronica in a relationship would be holding her back, and that a marriage would absolutely kill the series and leave her stagnant. It never even occurred to him that marriage isn't the end of a character's life and growth. It never occurred to him that plenty of drama can be had AFTER someone is married, or that development/growth could be that the characters mature enough to be capable of maintaining a committed relationship. Thomas' view of his own universe was so myopic that he couldn't conceive of any possible way that Veronica could still be a private detective involved in life-threatening investigations AND be married at the same time. Futhermore, he felt that fans just wanted Veronica to become a pregnant housewife, which is about as far from what Marshmallows were after as you can get without straight-up killing Veronica and/or Logan. He managed to do the only thing wronger than what he wrongly thought was their insistence.

On top of the above, Rob Thomas only viewed "noir" as a vehicle for total fatalism... despite the fact that many of the most famous noir stories are cynical and full of moral ambiguity, but they still feature a positive outcome. The Big Sleep still has the protagonist get the girl. The Set-Up arguably ends with the happiest possible ending in spite of the beating the hero receives.

Perhaps most importantly? Despite Thomas own insistence that Veronica Mars was always "noir," the majority of both TV critics and fans did not think that designation ever truly applied. I suspect that's the reason why Thomas decided to go as dark and fatalistic as possible: He wanted to be noir, and he was being told that he wasn't. So he went so far into noir that he killed his own most popular property.

He was adamant that it was the only way for the series to grow. But as it turns out, it was instead the only way for the series to permanently end. Without that season four finale, a passionate group of fans would still be begging for more. With it? It's over. Nobody fucking cares now.

That's kind of amazing.

Now is a cast regular because it was his twin. That Chejov Gun? It will appear again in 2 seasons. That character that left the town? Coming back again to kick some asses. And so on. Izombie got the best of Joss Whedon's and JK Rowling's Writing School Of Plot Points and elevate it into an art. Wrapped in lame puns and dad jokes everywhere.

Chapter 3: Balance and Solidarity

   I woke up slowly. It felt like I had slept for weeks. My head felt groggy. My eyes felt like they were sealed shut. I rubbed them hard to get them open. I was lying on the cot in the panic room. It was still real. It wasn’t a dream. 

     I sat up slowly. Despite not feeling anywhere near awake, I felt okay. I didn’t feel like everything hurt, or that I was suffering from starvation. It was odd. I stood up and I didn’t feel like I was going to fall. 

     I looked around the room. The cold iron was comfortable to have around me, but I headed to the door. I needed to figure out what was happening. I needed to find Kelly.

     The door was open. The basement was ominous when it was empty. I headed up the stairs. When I got to the top, I paused. Kelly was coming in the back door with Dean following her. 

     “Kels?” 

     She grinned at me. “Mish!” She walked up to me. I hugged her tightly. I felt her stiffen before she hugged me back. “This is weird,” she muttered. 

     “I wasn’t sure you were real,” I said. “I thought I was dreaming.”

     “Hey, it’s okay,” she whispered. “We’re okay. We gotta whole lot of weird to deal with, but we’re okay.” 

     I let go and pulled back. “What happened?” 

     “You’ve been asleep for two days. Castiel knocked you out.” She looked back at Dean.

     “He healed you,” Dean said. “Least, physically.” I nodded. That explained how I felt okay, at least, to a point. 

     “Hey, not to like...push things,” Kelly said, looking over at Dean. “But we kind of need a huge favour. I smell. Jane smells. Mish...definitely smells.”  I went to protest then stopped myself. She wasn’t wrong. “We need to go shopping for essentials. I don’t know about them, but I didn’t need to change as a ghost. Pretty sure that Jane stole the clothes she’s wearing.” Kelly looked at me.

     “I didn’t have time to grab anything. I left with what I had,” I tried not to think about the diner and how I only had time to run. 

     “We’ll...also need to use your credit cards.” 

     “Right,” Dean said. He looked both of us over before he nodded. “I’ll grab Sam. Find Jane and meet us at the car.” 

     My eyes widened and I looked at Kelly. “ The car?” 

     “Oh god,” Kelly muttered. She looked at Dean. “Now you’ve done it.” She turned back to me. “Best friend comes back from the dead, you’re merely happy. Get to ride in the Impala? Exuberant. I see where I stand.” I hit her, smacking her shoulder with my hand. It felt instantly like she had never left. My throat tightened, remembering what it was like when she died. 

     “Five minutes!” I jumped at Dean’s voice as he moved past us. 

     “Mish, you’re starting to scare them.” 

     I jolted out of my staring. “Sorry,” I muttered. The car was beautiful. It was pretty much exactly what it looked like in the show. I stepped forward. Both the men were watching. “I’m sorry,” I said louder. “It’s just...it’s a beautiful car.” 

     Dean grinned and nodded. “Damn right she is. Get in.” 

     Sam opened the back passenger door. Jane entered first, looking around the car slowly. I went next and Kelly came in after me. I looked around. The leather bench seats felt real and there were some wrappers on the floor. I couldn’t stop my excitement. It still felt surreal but for a second, it was almost like I could forget everything that brought me here. I leaned over the front seat as the boys got in. 

     “Dean! Can you play AC/DC and blast it?” I asked. I heard Sam groan but Dean gave a small laugh and popped in a tape. The sound of TNT came on and I started to sing along. 

     “I thought you were terrible at staying awake in cars?” Kelly half yelled. She had never been a fan of loud music. 

     “I am!” I yelled back. She sighed, closed her eyes and leaned her head against the window. The music would help keep me awake. 

     Jane leaned over from next to me. “I do not understand your affection for this noise.” 

     “It’s not noise,” I said. “It’s music. Good music.” 

     “Hell yeah!” Dean said up at the front, banging his hands against the steering wheel to the beat. The music continued without further protest. After a few songs, the car finally slowed to a stop. We were in front of a Walmart. 

     “We’re here.” Sam turned to face us. “Go in, get what you need and we’ll call you. Here.” He started to hand a cellphone to Jane before he realized who it was and gave it to me. “Take my cell. We’ll be back in a bit to pay for everything.” 

     Kelly opened her eyes and sat up. “You aren’t coming in?” I paused. I hadn’t considered that. I looked out the window. There were people in there. People who didn’t know about the truth of this world, people who could be things that weren’t human. 

     “You need us to hold your hands?” Dean looked over the seat. “Unless you’re planning on running off, you don’t need us standing ‘round while you shop. We’re going for food. We’ll be back in half an hour. If anyone else but me calls, you don’t answer.” He pointed at me. I nodded automatically. “Now go!” 

     Kelly turned and opened the door. I didn’t move. There was so much that could go wrong. Jane pushed on my back. I went out slowly. 

     The boys drove off and I stared at the store, instantly regretting coming. I should have just told them to buy me things and to guess at the size. There were too many people here.

     “Hey,” I looked over at Kelly. “It’ll be okay.”

     “Yeah,” I said. I didn’t tell her that the thought of going in there, being surrounded by people who could be anything, was making my heart pound and my palms sweat. “Let’s get this over with quickly.” 

     I stared at the mirror. It was odd looking at myself. My brown hair fell limp against my head.  My cheeks were a little sunken. I used to think my eyes were my best feature. Now they just looked haunted. 

     Nothing fit. Not like it was supposed to. I had never been thin back home, but the stress of this world had played havoc on me. I used to wear a large in shirts because of my stomach and chest. Now it felt too big. The only thing that hadn’t changed was the size of my feet. 

    “Michelle?” I jumped slightly at Kelly’s voice. I hadn’t wanted either of them out of sight, but that didn’t work when it came to trying on clothes. “You done?”

     “Yeah,” I opened the change room door. “I need new sizes though.”

     “In what?”

     “Everything.”

     “Really?” she looked me up and down. “Well, I guess you are thinner. Come on,” she said. “I need you to help me convince Jane to wear a bra.”  

     “What?”

     “She says, and I quote, the contraptions are confusing and a binding is easier.”

     “Where is she now?” I asked.

     “At the knives. She tried stuff on and once it fit, she left it in my basket. She’s still wearing the bindings but I took the bras in her size and added it to the stuff.” Kelly motioned to a cart she had next to her. “Come on, let’s grab the sizes you need and find her before the boys call. She’s demanding we grab work out clothes or clothes you can move freely in.”

     “What? Why?”

     “Hell if I know!” Kelly raised her hands in the air and then dropped them. She looked frustrated, which was understandable. “Come on, we also need essentials. Like toothbrushes and deodorant. Don’t tell the guys but I’ve been using whoever’s deodorant is in the bathroom. I smell like a dude.”

     “It’s probably Bobby’s…” 

     “Eh…” she shrugged. “Then he’s even less likely to know or complain. Come on, maybe we can freak the guys out and buy a ton of tampons. After all we are three girls and it's bound to happen eventually.”

     By the time the boys had called and found us, we were ready to go.

     “You sure you got everything?” Dean asked, looking at the full cart. “You don’t need more? Like the kitchen sink?”

     “What’d you expect with three women who literally only have the clothes on their backs?” Kelly said.

     “You guys didn’t even get coats,” he said, peering into the cart. 

     “We got coats. And layers.” She pulled out one of the thin coats we had grabbed. It was more of a fall type of coat. 

     “It’s freaking freezing outside and you’re telling me you just got that?” 

     Kelly and I both looked at each other.

     “It’s not that cold?” I phrased it like a question even if I didn’t mean it that way. 

     “It’s twenty degrees!” Dean looked like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. 

     I frowned. “What? It’s not hot out.”

     “He means Fahrenheit,” Kelly said leaning towards me. “It’s like...maybe minus ten?”

     “Dean,” Sam said. The cashiers were watching us now. “They’re Canadian, remember?” 

     “Yeah,” Kelly said. “This isn’t cold. I mean, it’s cold, but it’s not fuck my face cold.”

     “Oh yeah,” I said. “Now that’s cold.” Both the boys stared at us in shock. 

      “Don’t worry, if we need to, I’m sure we can come back, right?” she grinned at him, “this is a relationship I could get used to.”

     Dean turned away, grumbling under his breath as the cashier rang everything up. I would have felt bad if I hadn’t known they were using a credit card with a fake name. There was no plan to actually pay for any of this. 

     The cashier was flirting with Dean while giving us dismissive once overs. Everyone in the store had given us looks, though not as much as they would have in any other place. We were not the oddest thing in Walmart. Another woman came up to the cashier, smiling and looking over at Sam. I leaned over to Kelly.

     “I think the environment’s getting a little hostile,” I tried to tease. It didn’t quite feel right but I was just trying to relieve some of the tension I felt. 

     Kelly rolled her eyes. “No kidding.” She made a face as one of the women laughed and I tried not to smile at it. Instead, I turned to Sam and handed him back the phone that I was still holding.

     “Here.”

     “Thanks,” he took it and quickly pocketed it. “You get used to it,” he said.

     “Hmm?” I looked up at him, not entirely sure what he meant.

     He motioned at Dean and the cashiers. “Them. It takes longer but he’s flirting and they haven’t noticed that they haven’t actually scanned everything they’re passing through.”

     “Oh!” I had never even thought of that. Dean flirting with you would be a distraction. I turned to look and sure enough, the girl flirting back didn’t notice when one of the shirts she slid over the scanner didn’t scan.  “Wow.”

     “Yeah,” he said. “It usually works, though occasionally not well with certain old ladies.”

     I snorted, then covered my mouth with my hand trying to hide my giggles. I could see Kelly looking at me confused but I could perfectly imagine Dean trying and failing to flirt with an old lady. It felt like forever since I had laughed. I stopped, realizing the truth in that. I definitely hadn’t laughed since I left the diner but before that…before that was rare too. Even before leaving my world, I didn’t laugh much after Kelly died. 

     The shower was heaven. I didn’t realize how filthy I was until I kept washing. I eventually had to force myself to stop. Scrubbing my skin raw wasn’t going to erase the memories that were burned into me. 

     I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, the demon was waiting for me. The memories of the blood and the bodies were there. I looked around the dark room that Bobby had offered up to us. Kelly had dragged me upstairs to force me to shower and catch up. She had passed out while I had showered. I didn’t want to leave her, but I couldn’t sleep. She was sprawled across the bed and facing away from me. I stared at her for a moment, watching her breathe. It was still real. She was still here. 

     I climbed over her carefully. Jane wasn’t in the room but there were sounds coming from the main floor. I went to the washroom to clean up before I headed down the stairs, trying to be as quiet as possible. It wasn’t that I wanted to hide my presence, but I hadn’t had much interaction with the men outside of the first meeting and shopping. I was far too aware that people generally said more than they intended to when they didn’t realize you could hear them.  

     It wasn’t anything more than “pass me that book”. I moved closer. I caught sight of the clock. It was just after two in the morning. It didn’t feel like we had been upstairs that long. I didn’t want to intrude on the men. I just...I couldn’t be in the dark anymore. Even if it was slightly better feeling someone sleeping next to me, it just brought me back to nights alone. I couldn’t stay in that room, but I didn’t really have anywhere to go. I wanted Kelly to wake up so I wasn’t alone. 

     “You gonna stand there all day or come in?” I looked up, startled at Bobby’s voice. I had made it to the doorway without realizing it. 

     “Yeah, sorry,” I said, quickly stepping into the room. “I just…” I trailed off, unsure of what to say. 

     “Keep moving,” Dean appeared behind me, beer in hand. He ushered me further into the room before walking around me. “We have some questions for you.”

     “Questions?”

     Dean sat down in a chair and looked up at me. All of them were sitting and looking at me. It was a little surreal and really unnerving. Anxiety started to creep up my spine. 

     Sam stood up. “Why don’t you sit down?” He moved a stack of books off of a chair before pushing the chair towards me.

     “Thanks,” I said. I stayed standing. It felt like I was being ganged up on already and my body was gearing up, as if ready to run. “What questions?”

     Dean leaned forward. “How old are you?”

     “What’s that got to do with anything?” I asked, confused at the topic. 

     “Fact-checking,” he said.

     I frowned. That didn’t make any sense. “Fact…” I looked at all of them, watching their expressions when it clicked. “Like a lie detector. You already know the answers, but you want to see if I’ll give the same ones.” I scoffed and shook my head.

     “Answer the question.”

     Anger welled up in me and I suddenly pictured taking up the book near him and hitting him with it, over and over, just to make him stop looking at me like that. Like I was something he needed to hunt. I shoved the intrusive thought out of my head and took a deep breath. I could work with this.

     “Only if you answer mine,” I said. I waited as the brothers looked at each other before Dean nodded. “I’m twenty-seven. Where in the timeline are we?” They looked confused so I elaborated. “How long ago did you release Lucifer out of the cage?”

     Sam shifted in his seat before answering quietly. “About four months ago.”

     I nodded. The timeline was confusing. It didn’t match up with the show if Kelly was already into the next season. I remembered what Kelly said about how long I was gone. Time worked differently. 

     “How did you get into…this world?” Sam asked. I frowned at him. I told this story. This had to be more fact-checking. A good way to see if people were telling the truth was to ask them the same question at different times, see if they had the same answer.

     “I walked,” I said. “I was job hunting, walking around and handing out resumes. Not a lot of work for someone who dropped out of a university master’s program. Least, nowhere I wanted to work. I walked out of a store and suddenly I was just on a dirt road. There was no sign of anything. I didn’t even realize the scenery was different until after I took that step. I looked back and there was just…more road.” I stared at the bookshelf, thinking back into the moment. I had panicked. I had screamed. I was just so confused.

     “You didn’t feel anything?”

     I jolted out of my thoughts, looking around the room as I remembered where I was. Sam was leaning forwards, his arms on his knees and a concerned look on his face.

     I shook my head. “No. It was just one second in the city and the next somewhere I had never even seen before.” My throat tightened. The fear from that moment had never quite left. I tried to change the subject. “What happened after I...after Castiel knocked me out? Is there a plan?”

     “You’re staying here,” Bobby said. “For now.” There was a slight threat lingering there but I didn’t pay any mind to it. That was understandable. I opened my mouth to thank him but he stopped me. “Don’t thank me just yet. We still don’t know why you’re here…or how to get you home.”

     Home. I swallowed tightly and clenched my jaw. I took a deep breath. Gods, all I wanted was to go home. To tell my family I was alive and that I was okay. Sort of. I tried not to think about the fact that it might not be possible. 

     “What happened after that?”

     I looked sharply at Dean. “I already told you that.”

     “So tell it again,” he said.

     “Dean…” Sam called out. Both of us ignored him.

     “No,” I said. I crossed my arms over my chest and stared at him. “When you said you wanted to ask questions, I figured it was something about what I knew about you. Not the Spanish inquisition. I didn’t agree to be put on trial.”

     “That’s not what’s happening here,” Sam said.

     “Isn’t it?” I snapped, looking at him. “You waited until I was alone, most likely still sleep-deprived despite being put into a coma by an angel, and traumatized considering what you know I’ve been through so far so that you could force whatever truth you want out of me? Way to go. Points to you for trying to take advantage of what I’ve dealt with so far.” I gave a hard smile before turning to walk away. I had enough.

     “Michelle,” Jane stood in the entranceway to the room. Her red curls were wild, looking as if she had been running through trees and had caught pieces of them in it. I had no idea how long she had been there or how much she heard. “You’re awake. I wish to speak with you.” I tried not to sigh. So did everyone it seemed.

     “Wait your turn darling,” Dean said from behind me. “We’re not done.”

     “The hell we aren’t,” I snapped.

     Jane walked towards me and looked at the men. “I care not for your trivial words, man-child. I wish to speak with her and so I shall. Presently.” Jane took my wrist and pulled me out of the room. She let go once we were in the hallway but motioned for me to follow her. She led me out of the house. The air was crisp and I could almost see my breath. I went as far as the porch.  

     She stopped once she realized I was not following further. She sat down on the ground at the bottom of the stairs and motioned for me to join her. I sat on the top stair and waited. I didn’t know her. I had no idea what she wanted, but I was nervous. Again, I wished Kelly was with me.

     “What did you want to speak about?” I finally asked.

     “You were uncomfortable,” she leaned back on her hands. “No man should make a woman uncomfortable. If we were in my world, he would pay for the disservice.”

     I stared at her for a moment. Woman solidarity transcended worlds. I had to admit, that was kind of cool. “Thanks.” She nodded in return and it was silent for a moment before I spoke again. “Why outside?”

     Jane seemed to sigh. “This world is stifling. All these…machines and steel. You take no pride in what the Goddess gifts you and your world is lacking.” She looked up to the sky. “The stars will not even shine here.” I watched her for a moment. There was a look on her face that almost seemed sad and resigned. She looked back at me. “Despite this, I am more free outside, more connected to the earth than when I am within those walls.”

     “Will you tell me about your world?” I asked.

     She smiled and it seemed to lighten her entire face. She suddenly looked so much younger than I expected. “It is very different from this one. We do not have these barriers between ourselves and the earth, nor do we have the same machines. All are welcomed and cherished by the Goddess. Women are the leaders of our clans; we hunt and provide for our young ones and the ones who cannot care for themselves any longer….”

     The sun rose as we spoke. Everything in Jane’s world sounded rather primitive compared to what I was used to…but also nice. You could hear how much she cared for her community, and it was a community. They took care of each other in their clans. A cooperative living environment. Something that would rarely happen in our society, and if it did, would be looked down upon by others. It sounded like I would have been much safer had I landed in her world instead of this one.

     It also explained a lot about Jane. She was a leader in her clan, in line to become the head. A skilled hunter and fighter, often in the front lines of any skirmishes they had with other clans or animals. It made me wonder.

     “What do you think of this? Of…being here?”

     She didn’t hesitate before answering. “It is a trial from my Goddess and I will prove myself worthy of her.” She looked determined, and I was tempted to dig further, to know why she thought this was a test and if she thought we’d ever return. I just wanted someone to know and she seemed so confident that I would believe her. Or pretend I did.

     My stomach growled suddenly and Jane looked at me sharply. She stood up quickly.

     “You need sustenance. Go, find yourself food. If they deny you it, inform me. I do not trust these men and I shall deal with them if I must.”

     “I’m sure it won’t come to that,” I said as I stood up. “Despite everything, they are good men. They’re just…stressed. Like all of us.” I gave her a small smile. “Thank you.” She nodded at me and I turned and walked inside.

     I passed Sam in the hallway who was on the phone, heading towards the back door. I walked into the kitchen and stiffened. I forgot it was connected to the library. Dean was leaning into the fridge. He looked up when he heard me and straightened. I pressed my lips together as we both tried to figure out how to proceed. I took a deep breath and tried to let go of any residual anger that I felt from earlier. It wouldn’t do any good.

     “Got anything light to eat?” I asked tentatively. An awkward peace offering if any.

     “Uh, not really,” he looked back in the fridge. He looked up at me, confused. “Can’t you eat normal? Cas healed you.” 

     I hadn’t thought about that. “I don’t know. I...I haven’t eaten in days. Better safe than sorry,” I shrugged. The thought of eating felt strange after days of trying to scavenge. 

     He seemed to think about it, his head tilted as he nodded. “Soup?” 

     I sighed before nodding. “Sure. I’ll try it.”

     “Cans are on the shelf next to the sink. Pots under it.” He motioned. He finally closed the fridge and poured himself a cup of coffee. It didn’t look fresh. 

     I opened the cupboards, looking at the cans of soup. Suddenly, the thought of making food exhausted me. I closed the cupboard and opened one after another until I found cups. I grabbed some water from the sink and leaned against the counter. I drank one cup and then another. I held back on drinking more. I knew better than to drink too quickly, I just wanted the hunger to subside.

     “Not eating?” Dean was staring at me, taking a sip of his drink.

     I shook my head before looking at him. “I’m tired. Can’t be bothered to make anything.”

     Dean made a noise as if he agreed. “Sam’s grabbing food.”

     I nodded, though it wasn’t likely it’d be anything I could eat, or wanted to. “I’ll make soup later.”

     He didn’t say anything but didn’t leave either. It was awkward and I felt like I should say more. I could see Bobby in the library. Sam, I assumed, was gone. I had no idea if Jane was where I left her. I pushed away from the counter, put the glass in the sink and walked away.

Lance is the stepson of Maria McClain and the stepbrother of four children. Luis (The oldest/asshole), Marco (Second oldest), Veronica (The third oldest/Brought back to life lady) and Rachel (The youngest). Yjok is the McClain children Stepfather and Lance's half-father, the McClain family is kinda complicated.

Luis is the Nadia and Sylvio's father and Lance's stepbrother however due to him purposely losing control while Lance was in heat twice, he ended up making Lance bear his kids when his wife Angela- an infertile Beta- couldn't. He is an Alpha however he is boastful, a scumbag cheater and Lance's main rapist. He is also a neglectful father and doesn't pay his only two children (Nadia and Sylvio) attention so after years of neglect, they now only accept Keith as their father and refuse to talk to Luis.

Marco is Luis's younger brother and is also an Alpha with a Beta husband named Alex, a light brown skinned green eyes male who is a home designer. He hates his stepfather (Human name he took was Jospeh but his real name was Yjok) and moved out four months after he was introduced to both Yjok and Lance, he visited in very spanned months to check on his sisters and little brother but after Lance was pronounced dead by the Garrison, he stopped going to the house altogether and Rachel brought the kids to his house where he lived with Alex. He hates his mother, greatly dislikes his stepfather and is ignoring his relation to his older brother completely. He is Nadia and Sylvio's uncle. He was one of the only people to hold his niece and nephew when they were born.

Veronica is Marco and Luis's younger sister however when Lance was 13 and she was 17, Yjok stabbed her three times and left to rot in the woods after she learned what was going on behind her back at home to Lance. Without knowing it, Lance channeled his Quintessence into Veronica and managed to revive her back to life. She later went to space and spent 18 months as a capture of the Galra and later rescued by Rebels with Mathew Holt and later met with Adam Wyatt and the three stayed together all looking for people they miss and love while fighting in the war. She hates Luis and has disowned him as her brother, cut all contact with her mother and later learns she's an aunt of Nadia and Sylvio. Also, she has a huge grudge against Yjok since he is her killer and Lance's kidnapper. She practically raised Lance when her mother refused to acknowledge his existence. She is a Beta.

Rachel is Marco, Luis's and Veronica's younger sister and Lance's second oldest sister. She was one of the only people to hold Sylvio and Nadia when Lance became pregnant by her stupid older brother, she hates Luis, hates her mother, and wants Yjok dead, and she doesn't give two shits on how he dies she just wants him dead. She's also shown to be a good fighter and sassy comebacks, she's also very protective of Lance and is one who treated his injuries when Yjok and Luis hurt him to the point he couldn't move for days. She is an Omega.

Yjok is Lance's half-father and Melenor's rapist. When Lance was still a newborn in his mother's stomach, he assaulted her and when Lance was five on a family vacation with the old Paladins and his family, he snuck into where he was and drugged him with a Quintessence induced pill to block his memories that Lotor found a way to unblock those memories by ordering Acxa to put something in his drink after he was kidnapped. Yjok was also greatly disliked by the Alteans and Allura suggested that he was poisoned by Quintessence to explain his long impossible life however he's just a sadistic man who wasn't poisoned just had an extreme twisted mind. He's been able rape Lance at least once in his childhood but most of his attempts were either forced to a complete stop when Veronica returned home, or Rachel hid Lance by distracting Yjok for her brother to be able to make his escape. Keith later ends him. He is an Alpha.

Maria is Lance's stepmother however, she neglects Lance and also abusive to her grandchildren, she doesn't stop Angela from putting her hands on them nor does she tell Luis to stop his assaults on Lance. Either this was a change by Yjok or this was just who she really was. It's unknown however she wasn't married to Yjok it's just manipulation keeping her and Yjok together, that is also unknown with answers none of Lance's siblings who he's on good terms with can figure out. Three of her children want absolutely nothing to with her anymore because of who she is now, and she doesn't seem to care much either. She is a Beta.

Alfor is Lance's true father, and he highly misses the days where his family was complete as a whole. His son helped him learn things but also helped Alteans explore more about Quintessence while being cautious of its energies. When Lance was kidnapped and his wife assaulted, he became a close wary and extremely cautious man, heartbroken by the disappearance of his son, the death of his wife a few weeks after their son vanished and placed his remaining child and his advisor in a Pod so that they survive. Allura and Lance later are forced to destroy his core memories in order to survive a virus implanted by a Galra crystal that corrupted the system, Lance at the time not realizing that he was able to see his true father because his memories were blocked by Corrupted Quintessence. He is the grandfather of four children and father-in-law of Keith. He is an Alpha.

Melenor is Lance's mother, he inherited her kind natured personality but looks much like his father except the eyes. She was assaulted by Yjok and was terrified for many months after that assault and devastated when her youngest was taken, she is the grandmother of four children and the mother-in-law of Keith. She passed a week after Lance was kidnapped and the war progressed dangerously after that. She is an Omega like her son.

Zarkon and Honerva are unfortunately apart of Lance's family because of one thing. Cole. He is the son of Lotor and Lance however, Cole wants nothing to do with his father and only accepts Keith as his father. Because Lance and Lotor weren't married but however had a child together ushered the relation of the corrupted couple to become connected to Lance. Lance doesn't remember much of the kind Honerva and Zarkon however, Zarkon and his wife both knew Lance to be the missing prince and the heart of Voltron resulting in Zarkon's hunt for him remembering what his disappearance caused disturbance in the Voltron lions. Zarkon is an Alpha and Honerva a Beta. Lotor is Also an Alpha.

Allura is Lance's older sister, at the time they don't know they've been reunited because of Lance's blocked memories and Allura's clueless on Lance's whereabouts. She later fixes Honerva's mistakes after she tried to find the perfect reality where she could be with her family and unfortunately had to leave Lance and her new family by sacrificing her life. Many years later somewhat in the prologue she's given a second chance at life and is again reunited with her brother and family. She is a Beta.

(IMPORTANT DETAIL) Lance is also the new Guardian of Oriande after the white lion was unfortunately killed in Honerva's takeover of the hidden realm of the white hole. When he passes, he always said he'd become a lion and protect that beautiful world he was able to see.

Keith is Lance's mate and the father of Mela and the stepfather of Sylvio, Nadia and Cole. He later killed Yjok and resulted in his reign over terrorizing Lance to end. He's half-Galra and Human and bonds with his son Cole over their half Galra heritage, he has a blue diamond on the back of his neck representing Lance and he has a red diamond on the back of his own neck to represent Keith and show that they are mates. His is a proud father, husband and king with Lance by his side and never regrets loving his beautiful mate and plans on spending every moment with him until death.

trying to distract myself from the very real fears i have about vol 2 by thinking about a ronance veronica mars au. 

the story always starts the same. barb dies at the first blush of sixteen and nancy’s life shutters to stop. it’s senior year now, and around her everyone is making plans for their future, but nancy is stuck living in the past, haunted by the ghost of her dead best friend that everyone is too happy to have forgotten about.

then we have hopper, a washed up police chief with a drinking problem who barb’s parents hire as private investigator. nancy would, of course, con her way into being his assistant for access to barb’s investigation. (plus i love the idea of innocent, suburban good girl nancy wheeler sneaking out of her house at night and going around hawkins terrorizing people while hopper just sighs tiredly in the background)

but peace in hawkins only lasts so long, even without supernatural disturbances, and teens start dying again.

when eddie munson is named as suspect #1, nancy doesn’t think much of it. there’s little to connect chrissy cunningham and barbara holland’s deaths. but when her brother comes to her with his big pleading eyes and claims eddie’s innocent, c’mon nance, don’t you believe me? she finds that she does. and of course it makes sense her brother and her friends are mixed up with eddie munson. she’s more surprised to see her ex and his weird friend getting involved.

and while this nancy is really more of a solo act, steve and mike get all wide-eyed and worried and there’s someone out there offing high school girls, you really shouldn’t be wondering around on your own and that’s how nancy gets stuck with robin buckley, certified disaster who never stops talking and insults everyone without prejudice, who keeps looking at nancy like she’s waiting for nancy to laugh at her terrible jokes and it feels a little too close to how barb used to look at her and -

she was my friend, too, y’know robin tells nancy, one day, soft like the confession cost something, and nancy didn’t know that, or didn’t want to remember that. you weren’t the only one who lost someone.

(nancy is starting to suspect she lost more than just barb that day.)

and in between the casual breaking and entering and some light larceny, robin starts to take the shape of a friend. or something friend-like. robin does things like remembers how nancy likes her coffee, and shows up unannounced to hang around hopper’s while nancy works and never feels like the distraction she is. it makes nancy’s chest sharp.

and then fred benson’s body is dumped at nancy’s front door.

it’s as clear a warning as any, but all it does is piss nancy off. this bastard has stolen so much from her already. she’s going to be the one to put a bullet between his eyes.

and robin is right there, unusually calm in the face of nancy’s thunder. robin’s hand is a little sweaty and bigger than nancy’s, but she slots her fingers between nancy’s like she has the right to and swears she’s with nancy, whatever happens. it’s the sort of vow begging to be broken, but nancy is tired of being so alone.

the first time nancy kisses robin, they’re both soaked with terror, trembling from the relief of a near miss. she does it so she can blame it on the rush of adrenaline, but she’s never as good at lying to herself as she is to everyone else, and she’s been thinking about using her mouth to shut robin up for weeks now.

their only real connection is a misplaced loyalty to a dead girl. and there’s still a killer out there, painting a bloody target over nancy’s life. she isn’t even sure if she remembers how to be a part of the living anymore. but robin kisses her back like tomorrow is promised and nancy thinks it may be worth it to try again.

i'm gonna hire the writers of fast and furious and we're gonna work out a way to make logan magically un-dead. they bring back every mf who dies in that film franchise, so i'm sure we can find a way. i mean, han LITERALLY dies on camera but somehow they bring him back for fast 9 (i would know, i just watched all 10 + the 1 spin off because i am sick for dwayne the rock johnson and jason statham getting into ridiculous situations).

new season 5 begins, veronica is being her bad bitch self but she's lost and lonely inside without the literal love of her life that they spent 4 seasons and 1 movie building up to. logan comes back from the dead. there is a full episode of reconciliation and then another 10 (minimum) of logan being the most supportive husband of all time because despite what rob thomas thinks, the rumours are true. a girl can have it all these days. she can be a bad bitch crime fighting queen AND hold down a relationship. she can have a committed partner and still do her job. astonishing, i know. groundbreaking stuff. women these days, huh??

maybe logan would also be a cute little sidekick or a getaway driver at times, you know. just making his girl look as slay as possible (as he SHOULD).

For as long as she has lived in Huntsville, Clara Jones has stubbornly avoided dealing with her past and tried very hard not to think about her future. She moved to town when she was a teenager as the ward of a park ranger and his wife. Her foster father, a native of Huntsville and something of a hometown hero, had apparently rescued her from some nebulous Bad Situation and decided to move back home with his new daughter to give her a chance to start over. And as far as Clara was concerned, that's all anyone needed to know about her. Who she was or what happened to her before was irrelevant.

What followed was fairly typical for a troubled teenager acting out: skipping school, staying out after curfew, a mild streak of delinquency, a lot of underage drinking, and falling madly in love with a boy of whom her father vehemently disapproved. Their relationship was dramatic and tempestuous, but she loved Jamie deeply and she was certain, in the way only a teenage girl can be, that everyone else was wrong about them and that he was the love of her life. Realising way later than she should have that she was the one who was wrong was a devastating blow to what little stability Clara had allowed herself to build.

And then came the storm. And the paradox. And the monsters. They should have scared her, but they didn't - not as much as the monsters from her own past did.

For a few years after that, Clara's tendency toward self-destructive behaviour only got worse. She took bigger and bigger risks. She crossed lines that even she wouldn't have crossed before. She would do something outrageously reckless, then somehow find a way to do something even more unhinged and unthinkable the next week. It was only when her careless actions cost the lives of the only real parents she'd ever had that Clara realised she had gone too far. They'd died protecting her, and that wasn't a mistake she could just shake off like the rest of them.

She hit rock bottom fast and hard, but with it came a resolve to finally pull herself together - to put the lifetime of hurt and anger she'd been toting around into something that made her feel worthwhile, something that honoured the sacrifice her foster parents made for her, even if she could never quite forgive herself for what happened. Now that she's a park ranger she's still a risk taker, she's still stubborn as hell, and she still refuses to listen to anyone else, but at least she feels like she has a purpose. And most days, that's enough to keep her going.

Clara never talks about her past, but she does display a few hints that people may notice depending on how observant or knowledgeable they are. For example: - She speaks with an American accent, but occasionally slips up and spells in British English or uses British vocabulary. (Not at all including this as an excuse for me to occasionally slip up and use British vocabulary.) - Her American accent has grown more generic and difficult to place over time but there's still something distinctly New York about it. - She carries herself like someone who went through years of etiquette training. - She's familiar with the culture and customs of a variety of countries, mostly in Europe, to an extent that indicates she either lived there at some point or visited extensively.

She has three tattoos: a simple heptagon on her right arm, a stylised phoenix on her left shoulder, and the initials J.B. tattooed on the inside of her right wrist.

She's proficient at archery and wields a hunting bow on the occasions when she joins the town's hunting party. When she's doing night watch, she prefers to carry a crossbow - regular or pistol - because she finds it easier to climb with.

She rides a vintage motorcycle that used to belong to her foster father. It's her baby, and she generally takes better care of it than she does of herself.

Seeing all these things about how Joseph wants to come back as Eddie for “Stranger Things” and that besides all of us fans that Joe Keery and Gaten do too it’s actually common for TV show writers to change their minds due to all of this. There’s so many examples from my own fandoms like:

- Soap operas are known for this first because of them being on daily and for decades so the fan interaction is actually key to the shows still airing. They’ve reversed deaths so many times or kept characters/actors around because they became fan favorites. It’s happened twice on the original “Dark Shadows” with Barnabas who became the main character after he was introduced and then they kept his cousin Quentin who was originally a guest star. Then “The Young and the Restless” kept Victor Newman who was only supposed to guest star in a few episodes in the early 80s. He and his family have been main characters ever since to this day.

- “Buffy” (my username!) did it with Spike who was only supposed to be in season 2 but developed such a following they not only brought him back but he became one of Buffy’s main love interests and was there the rest of the series.

- Like I pointed out in my other posts LOST brought back Charlie twice after he died in two different ways. Once as a ghost only his best friend Hurley could see and talk to, and the other in the AU/afterlife storyline all of their final season.

- “Veronica Mars” switched Logan from being the main villain to not only one of the main characters but Veronica’s love interest and future husband.

- “Once Upon a Time” was only supposed to keep Killian “Captain Hook” Jones for a few episodes but changed their minds once they saw his chemistry with Emma and then most of us fans just loved him and he stayed the whole time. They also killed him once only to send him to actual Hades and then get a reward to live again and marry Emma and have a family.

- Then there’s all the superhero shows/movies that do this too.

Plus I know there’s so many more from other fandoms. So there is always hope and since apparently season 5 won’t film till next year and be out in 2024 hopefully something possibly will change.

veronica mars rewatch 2x10: one angry veronica

• ugh my illness seems to have gotten worse. my throat is killing me and I still have body aches. I was supposed to visit my friend in another state in a few days but it doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen :/

• I look forward to this rewatch every night, and not just when I’m sick. it’s been a lot of fun revisiting it and falling in love with veronica all over again. I was obsessed with her (and this show) when I first watched it in high school and before I started this rewatch, I read some critical comments towards Veronica and I was worried that I wouldn’t like her or the show as much this time around, not only because of those comments but because I’m older and would have more life experience/perspectives and see her in a different light. While I’m older now and can point out her flaws or disagree with her, it’s very obvious to me why Veronica acts the way she does. Even if it’s not obvious, her flaws make her more realistic. I’m really glad I still love her and the show pretty much the same as when I first watched it.

• damn Duncan knew Meg was pregnant and didn’t tell Veronica. I mean I know that’s a hard thing to tell your girlfriend, but uh yeah he should’ve told her

• I understood that Truman Capote reference, thanks to that feud miniseries I watched that was

• completely forgot meg woke up at the end of the last episode

• funny how Veronica got chosen to be a juror and she’s only 18. How many 18 year olds are actually chosen for jury duty?

• one of these jurors is Angela Blake from the west wing

• but wait I thought jurors weren’t allowed to talk about the trial or look up anything about it?? so if Veronica brings this news Keith put on her laptop to the attention of the other jurors is it allowed?

• wait I’m confused. Did Logan steal the tapes or did he buy them from the person who stole them?

• also fuck you logan for destroying those tapes. I don’t care if you’re trying to protect your dad or your family name or whatever. Aaron deserved to rot in jail forever

• oh Leo stole the tapes???

• ok but there’s a difference between a jury seeing the tapes of Aaron and Lily and people testifying about what they saw on the tapes that no longer exist. Having the tape would make it so much easier to convict him.

• why did the hospital call Keith to tell him Meg died?

• it’s also eerie that Meg told Veronica if anything happened to her to protect the baby and then she dies. Presumably on the same day I think?

• at least Veronica and Meg made up before she died
