A picture of my mother
I asked my grandmother how my mother looked when she was young
“She looked just like you,” she said as if she didn't think too hard about the question
But I refused to believe that such an angry and tired woman once looked like me
After rummaging in her room, she handed me a picture frame
It weighed in my hands, and the dust fell upon my jeans
I wished I could've reacted the way any girl my age would've
“Oh she looks pretty.”
“Oh she's so thin."
“Oh she did look like me!”
I couldn't bear to look at her any longer.
She was young, naturally, without those deep lines that run across her forehead and cheeks
She didn't carry a scowl as she usually does.
She made it seem as if she was smiling for you and only you
And she looked she free, with no worry weighing in her mind
My grandmother handed me another picture, and another, and another
I understood then, my mother should've never had children
I can't be sure she was ever happy with me around
I try so hard to have a civil conversation with her and yet we end up cursing each other
I take after my father, who can't choke out the words, “I love you”
The pictures shake in my hands “Grandma… Why did my mother marry?"
She smiled, sadly, without saying anything at all.
I knew better
"Daughters tend to make the same mistakes as their mothers..”
I long for that care free girl in the picture
I'd give up my own life to let my mother turn back from this path
She was so happy.. so so happy
I know I took this away from her and I know I can never give it back
She enters the room quietly, wearing that same damn scowl
I wish I could be anywhere but here with her

The Poacher
started my creative writing class this week! wrote this for it; it's inspired by the wonderful artwork The Giantess by Leonra Carrington. am quite proud of it so thought i'd share it!
transcript under cut!
The Poacher
It’s a quick step;
she’s a hop and a jump away
over the fencing wire and onto the grass
with the goose egg cradled close to her chest
under her coat.
And when her mother takes the egg
over a fire this evening,
cracks it open, wide,
the yolk golden and runny as it reaches her daughter’s lips
she will remember the flavour of girlhood,
how it was one long day
tasting of sweet and stolen goods.

Proud to admit I cried at the Barbie movie ending. The symbolism of creation, our place in the world and purpose, and deciding even if you don't know the answer you get to choose your own destiny got me. As did the themes of being girls, sisterhood, motherhood, and daughterhood.
What it means to be women. Through the perspective of women. Themes of how a woman created Barbie, how women create life and choose to fight so their daughters can have a better tomorrow.
The themes of humanity, the beauty of it.

Ladies of HP Fest Kickoff! Theme 1: Mothers and Daughters, 28 April - 5 May 2024
Tumblr media
The 2024 fest is here!!
For our first theme of the Ladies of HP Fest, we are inviting works that explore the themes of mothers and/or daughters. This can be any aspect of motherhood or daughterhood, including the desire, the absence, or the loss of either. It can also include like-a-mother or like-a-daughter relationships. You can focus the work on either a mother or a daughter, or both!
Below you'll find prompts to get you started. Happy creating!
Characters who want to be mothers or struggled to become mothers
Like-a-mother characters, absence of motherhood, loss of motherhood
Joyful and/or complicated mother-daughter relationships
What it’s like to be the mother or daughter of (insert character here)
Families with two mothers
Grandmother and granddaughter or grandson relationships
Characters missing their mothers or daughters
Guidelines and rules below the cut:
Writing/creating: Minimum fic word count for the main fest is 200*; no artwork 'time' amount, but use your best judgment to show something that took effort. The full rule list can be found here, and the FAQ list can be found here.
Posting: When you're done, post the work to the 2024 AO3 collection. It will be unrevealed until the mod reveals it. There is no set reveal schedule; it's a come as you are, come as you go sort of fest, and no set commitment to any week. You can post ahead of time, but the fic won't be revealed until the theme arrives. Please include the theme in your author notes.
If you have questions, ask. Happy creating!
Many thanks to @merlinsbudgiesmugglers for our banners!

What part of the Star Wars sequels was your LEAST favorite and what is the thing you would change first in a rewrite
r3ylo. they so very very very badly dropped the ball with their relationship and their characters, specifically ben. oh my god. and listen listen listen, you had PERFECTLY GOOD LEGENDS CONTENT TO RECYCLE RIGHT THERE. i mean b3n solo is already a hodge podge of ben skywalker (luke's son) and jacen solo, so lets just fucking give him jacen's name and reskin rey as jaina solo, jacen's twin sister.
we give jaina rey's kindness, headstrong leadership, and reservation. we make her a little more jaded bc hello, her twin brother left their family and destroyed their uncle's temple to go become a sith lord. that would make anyone a little pessimistic.
we'd follow jaina, who works as part of the resistance under her mother, leia. standard child of divorce stuff: feels like she'll never live up to the expectations of her mother, longs for freedom outside of the diplomatic role she's been assigned, holds her mother to a higher standard than her dad (is it really an ella nancysglock idea if there aren't themes of strained daughterhood & motherhood?) jacen showed force sensitivity from a young age and got whisked off to train w uncle luke while jaina stayed with her mom and learned the politics. (imagine one of our opening scenes being jaina in full diplomatic getup on one of the republic planets, slipping out of a meeting and pulling off her robes, wiping off her makeup. she's just about to jump a balcony to sneak out when she hears a very familiar older female voice say, "you might as well walk out the front door if you're gonna be so obvious about sneaking out." leia. of course.) the first act of ep 7 finds jaina discovering her force-sensitivity. when she goes to find luke in ep 8 (a la rey), there's the added dynamic of "you never knew me as well as my brother" and luke seeing so much of his sister (and han to an extent) in jaina.
rey + ben's soul-bondy thing would be a twin sense thing for jacen and jaina (like what is vaguely established between luke and leia in the ot). luke + jacen would have even clearer narrative parallels (male twin luke brought to the light, male twin jacen brought to the dark). jacen would be a more sympathetic villain bc jaina's draw toward him and care for him are pre-established, as well as the reason their relationship is strained. we'd spend time throughout the trilogy unpacking their complicated dynamic via those soul bond vision communication things that started between r&b in tlj.
now im sure ur thinking, "but ella, one of the best themes of the sequels (which was terribly mishandled) was that you didn't have to be born into a special family to be a hero, that you can choose your family and make a difference no matter who you are!" to that i say: yes. 100%. which is why we're giving finn & poe actual storylines. the other big theme of the sequels is legacy, right. what does it mean to be a skywalker, a solo? thats why we see rey, a nobody, rise to heroism and take on the skywalker name while ben, who was born into the family, fall from grace and struggle with morality (in theory). i think we can do this better though. lets have jaina and jacen BOTH be born into the skywalker family (bc hey, it is the skywalker saga) and watch them struggle with light and dark. lets take that "dark rey" shit from tlj and push it further. lets see jacen seduced by the dark and pulled toward the light because he still cares about his sister. lets see jaina raised in the light and tempted by the freedom of the dark side.
lets also see jaina and finn choose each other as chosen siblings. lets see finn develop a real dynamic with jacen. (finn is a real protagonist in this as well, im just not talking about his role in the story as much in this post. but trust, he is a huge part of the story.) lets see more of leia & poe's mother/son dynamic. lets push those ben/poe parallels further.
tldr. replacing rey & ben with jaina & jacen solo so they're twins now. obviously no romance. finn & poe get bigger storylines and there are much deeper themes about family, chosen AND blood.

realising how i love motherhood/daughterhood as mirroring themes in stories and portrayals and characters. like uma with ursula/calypso, joy with evelyn, mo with her unnamed mother. just passing on that torch. that pain. wanting to turn around to burn them but also be held despite the anger and blame. wanting answers, wanting resolution, wanting closure. that cry for help. rosaria without any memory of her own mother, her own family, never knowing how it's like to have someone to turn to, someone to be mad at, someone to blame.

At around 3:29 the piano here always gets me.
I was just listening to it. To me tonight it sounds like clear water. It reminds me of who I was and what I was like when I first listened to this song at 13-14 years old, and every dream and vision I had and everything about this song and this movie that moved me. In no particular order: love, grief, childhood, culture, memory, nature, history, divinity, daughterhood, granddaughterhood, girlhood, and so on. Hope, actually, too. Gentle and tentative. Even now I want to believe in it.
I googled Carissa suddenly because I remembered her, and um… found her LinkedIn profile. I hope she is doing well because I missed her for such a sudden, intense moment. I remember when we were very good friends, and how gentle and innocent and joyous that time was. I am very glad I had a good childhood, even if it was quite hard at times. There was pain, but joy and love, also, everywhere.

My mother's reflection lies in the mirror
I yelled at them, cursed at them so fiercely that it might have punctured a wound
I cry, in a way that they won't understand, "I never get time to myself!"
I hope these venomous words pierce through them like they're piercing me
I grit my teeth, my jaw clenched as anxiety oozes out from it. "I sacrificed a lot for you!"
It's only the truth, after all. A truth I must drill into their head.
I flung a glass plate, the delicate thing shattered instantly. "You are just like your father!"
They're sobbing uncontrollably, muttering incoherently. I wish their voice would fade away.
I continue, hoping that their tears will run out soon and be replaced with silent compliance.
Then I saw it, and I stopped abruptly, the bitterness still lingering in my mouth.
There was an antique mirror behind them, with a clear reflection.
I see... I see my mother staring back at me. It's a look of pity mixed with disgust.
She's a battered woman, wearing a terrible scowl and tired dark eyes.
Everything about her expression makes me want to scream.
Choking on my own tears, I quickly pushed that crying child aside
I tremble as I walk toward the mirror, bearing its reflection towards me.
No, that can't be me. It's not possible.
But it is, I'm the splitting image of my mother.
Oh god… oh god…
I look back at the frightened child, desperately trying to shrink in size
The child was me, and now I've become her

🔒 - One writing trick you wish you knew years ago
Cut -ing verbs when you can. I knew this for many years, but for SOME REASON, stopped doing this for all of 2020 and the amount of confusion in my prose, lol! ALSO: vague pronouns or nouns!! Get rid of them when they're referring to specific nouns (especially "it")!
🌊 - Do you use similes, metaphors, or personification more?
Similes 100%!
☯️ - Favourite theme(s) to write
Love anything that has to do with isolation, self-esteem, mother/daughterhood, aging.
💋 - How do you build up a relationship? (romantic, platonic, or otherwise)
Oh I don't even know. At this point I am very blessed that my characters have known each other for as long as I've known them! I try to figure out how they first met then work up from there.
