why it seems like i've been going slower lately

been meaning to elaborate on this but... eh, what're you going to do. i've been writing since i was a kid: literally, i wrote my first short story when i was six years old (so i am as old as time itself in comparison to this site). there are troughs and peaks with anything and everything that comes out of me, and writing is no exception. 2023 has been exhibit a of a trough for me (which was kind of my worry as 2022 was ending, like i’m going to have to hit the brakes at some point) and there’s a few reasons.

i'm not an alcoholic, but i come from a family that's been stricken by alcoholism and addiction. my dad's been in recovery nearly 10 years as of writing, and my mom hasn't used anything in about 7 years. though i don't have "the disease" (and the taste of alcohol makes me urp as well), i do have some inflictions of it: i get obsessed with things easily and i tend to put a lot of energy into something that i'm really obsessed with it, be it a book or a crush. writing has allow me to explore myself and what i love, as well as be an escape from the skeletons in my closet. at this point, it's sort of lost its luster. if i walk away from my laptop for a day or two, i come back refreshed, like i’m not dreading it or hating it.

with testament, anything alex touches, and the less-popular corners of the bay area, i'm always excited, which has never happened to me before in all my fannish ways, not even when i was hanging out with soundgarden and the grunge scene as they kind of me hanging in 2016. metallica wore me out after a while (though i'm still very much a fan and lars is still my dark knight) and anthrax gave me that totally lovely drama from the back half of 2020, even though i'm still more than happy to write about them and about joey in particular. however this comes with a price: i'm getting pulled in different directions. i've got my wips and tbh, i'm in no hurry to finish them, especially now that we have an income now after going most of the year without one and nearly losing our house as a result. it's for this reason i've often wondered if i have a.d.h.d. or if i'm neurodivergent. i like novelty. i like surprises. i like to be kept on my toes.

i have a long history with mental illness, financial trouble, and weight problems, as well as often extreme discomfort with my sexuality. at 18 years old, i was almost homeless. at 19 years old, i was suicidal and my eating disorder was at its worst. at 20 years old, i was suffering from extreme anxiety to the point it would keep me awake at night. this past summer, i was so worried about our losing the house, that i thought i was going to have a mental breakdown. also this past summer, at my heaviest weight ever of 268 pounds, i was starting to have problems with my circulation and my blood pressure. though i'm steadily getting healthier, and as of writing (11/21/23), i've lost nearly 50 pounds since july, i won't fully parse into it, but the one bugaboo that keeps haranguing me (and often to the point of wanting to rip myself apart) is my sexuality. look no further than this year's kinktober: i had to end it a little after halfway because i was getting humiliated. i would post for the day and no one on ao3 would read it... but oh, they would flock in droves to other writers who either can’t write worth shit (sorry, but someone needs to say it) or the kink involved either doesn't feel like kink because it's so commonplace or it just doesn't hit right, like it's not hot at all. it's like it's hot for the sake of being hot. plus, i literally hate the second person perspective now, the ____ x reader trope; speaking of commonplace. i remember doing a couple of those when i returned to fic, but it was back when it was fresh and unusual back in 2018 and 2019: now it seems like it's every other fic in existence. it's lonely as hell on my end, especially when you get a wide array of kinks involved. and it's unoriginal, too, like there's no creativity to be found whatsoever.

so, it's not the popularity of the trope that gets me: it's the fact that it's never written correctly and it's so one-note now, and more often than not, i just think, "god, why not just invent an original character?" i can literally put up with kinks i don't like unless it's written well, and this is never the case now. and it's so weird because ao3 has no algorithm and yet people treat it as such. when you share a kink with the world, the expectation is to have others step out of the shadows and relate to it and that's how you normalize it and get comfortable with it... at least that's how it works for me. so, that wasn't happening with kinktober this year and as a result, i took it out on myself (i got some serious beef with the metallica fandom again, too: "just when i thought i was out, they pull me right back in"). i started to question my future in any kind of writing now, because it seems like in 2023, original fiction is just fanfiction with the serial numbers filed off: yeah, so much for sharing originals anymore. is it even worth it in fic when i feel like such an island? *i mention mental health and weight because the three—should, anyways—go in sync with each other. in general, as i'm losing weight, my anxiety is disappearing, but mention anything sexual and it comes roaring right back again. i'm trying to make peace with the three. when you lose a ton of weight like i have—and i think i’m gonna keep going with it, too, my waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios are still high, plus i feel better after a good workout—it not only changes you physically but emotionally and mentally. there’s a lot of adjustment that goes into all of this.

i have other things i like to do. i'm an artist (say no to ai, please, i beg you: you're killing me here). with my weight loss, i have rediscovered my athletic ways. recently, i got into baking and cooking: don't know if i want to bother with pastry school or any kind of school in the future, especially with how much i really dislike our education system here in the states, but i'm into making bread and sweet stuff among other things, though.

baking is, i wouldn't say it's time consuming but it definitely takes time, especially if you're making bread: you have to make the dough, and you have to knead it enough to where it's smooth and elastic, and then you have to let it rest or "prove" for a couple of hours depending on the flour you use (4 hours, if it’s rye flour or oats or barley; overnight with spelt), and then you have to knock the air out of it and shape it and let it prove a second time for an hour or 90 minutes, and you really only bake it for a short time, like 25 minutes. i like to set aside a whole afternoon to make a loaf of bread or a cake or something. plus, the internet as a whole has gotten increasingly anti-art and treats everything as “content” rather than human expression and as just another trend (i give “free palestine” another couple of months maybe before the uneducated masses move onto the next trendy thing and the conflict over there persists because none of you “activists” are truly activists). corollary of this: no more quarantine. all the time in the world, yeah, i got quick and i was updating all the time. quarantine ended with the irreversible damage done to the world, i had to adapt.

i also just tend to write more when i go slower? i wrote that one shot from back in may, "porcelain" over the course of a few days and it clocked in at more than 8k. i wrote that merman!alex story last year over a few days and that came out at over 9k. i'm speaking as someone who participated in nanowrimo from 2018-2021 and then again this year (i sat out last year because i didn't feel like it): i write more, and i feel like i write better when i don't write every day now.

i’ve always been miss independent, anyway. it’s my strongpoint and my curse. writing, along with art, is a very lonely craft. even i, someone who enjoys her alone time, still get lonely at times.

i live in a cultural desert here in the california mountains. a piss poor art scene, there’s no music here (at least not anymore), the theater scene here comes and goes, and the one bakery we have here sucks. “don’t let them take you down, leave a better world than you found”, as chris once said. if that means i have to take my time, i’ll take it.

and finally, it’s not that these stories make me cringe (quite the contrary! on my days off, i think about them all the time) but… it’s going to take very specific circumstances for me to write something on the level of fever again, like i’m going to need the world to shut down again (and knowing how cowardly everyone is, i don’t see it happening unless it’s really bad like a war breaks out). and i’m literally doing what i can to improve things on a sexual level.

I was tagged by @subatoism thank yooou!! I have written/started over 10 fics in my life but tbh lately most don't make it past the planning stage and a looot of my old ones were written by hand and I've lost those notebooks;;; I only have one fanfic actually posted rn and its from 2018 oh no. Maybe I'll fill it out with some of my ideas even though I haven't actually written any prose... Anyways here we go.

1) Chief Medical Officers Personal Log, Stardate 51306.65

Lieutenant Naxeha Maten has arrived on the station, after nearly a year of being promised that a crisis counselor was to be provided to the station to help those who went through the events of the Dominion War. (What We Bring Back, WIP. Basically my continuation after the finale of DS9)

2) "I can't believe you would set them up like that!" Julian was stomping around the room, hands plowing through his hair. (Unnamed WIP where instead of Miles, it was Garak who discovered Julians secret in Dr. Bashir I Presume)

3) The bright lights of the city flashed by the taxi window. Multiple skyscrapers, advertisements, and billboards sported their on unique set of colors. (Mein Herr, SHINee fanfic)

4) Persona 5 fanfic inspired by the story of the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge album by My Chemical Romance. Ship is Akeshu (Akira x Akechi)

5) Pre- Danger Days (by MCR again...) fanfic following the lives of the Fab Four while they still lived in Battery City and how they became Killjoys

6) A Mirror!Garak x Julian idea where Julian was forced to stay after the first trip into the mirror dimension and M!Garak takes a liking to him and tries to use him to overthrow Indendant Kira.

7) I uh... do have a list of Kinktober stuff to try, mostly as practice for writing smut because I'm really bad at it...

I can't think of any more;; I do have a couple of original stories to turn into novels but this is fanfic specific so I won't add that here...

I also uh... don't know 10 people who write fanfic, or have openly shared they write it (even if they haven't posted) so I guess uh... @a-star-that-fell and @wanderingwriter87 if you haven't been tagged already. (You also don't have to do it if you don't want to;;;)

10 Years of Sherlock (TV) AO3 stats!

Sherlock fans, new and old, click below to read a long list of graphs and comments about our communities fanworks over the last 10 years. I scraped AO3 again and demonstrate that:

Activity over 10 years

The last 10 years in the BBC Sherlock fandom have been tumultuous, but this community persists, with engagement from new fans and continued creative output. To commemorate over a decade of squee, I’ve done another scrape of the fandom’s imprint on the Archive of Our Own and will share some insights from the numbers in these plots. A very late update on my post S4 snapshot from 2018.

Note: This analysis is of completed public fanworks only, about 101000 of the 122000 Sherlock (TV) works available at present. This is to remove the late WIP effect, which adds a bulge to the last few months, and out of respect to creators who wish to have their material reserved for other registered AO3 users.

The works are still coming

Counting the number of works posted per day, we can see the peaks associated with each series airing (in UK and US). After that, the number of works continues fairly evenly, 20-30 per day, plus seasonal peaks. This rate is continuing on without a hint of new canon in sight. So who is posting all this work?

Creator-waves, monthly output

Years ago I started plotting creator waves, basically I group fanwork producers by the year they first posted to the fandom and then count how many of this group are active in later time intervals. This lets us get a sense of how long people are contributing and whether new fans are getting the urge to create.

This plot of the Sherlock (TV) fanworks on AO3 shows the standard shape of plump participation in the first year of any given set of creators, followed by a slowly thinning tail as they because less active over time. Turnover is natural in fandoms, with most only posting a work or two within a fairly limited amount of time, while a precious few persist for years. The surprise for me here is that the ratio of new creators is higher in 2020 than it was in 2019. Maybe the excuse of lockdown encouraged more folks to take a turn at creating content.

Another way to look at the output of fan creators on AO3 is to see the total amount of words being shared across all fanworks. The total has been pretty close to 300-400k words per month since 2018! To get a sense of what that means per work, I also plotted the median number of words per fanwork in these monthly sets. The median in higher in the last year than it had been staying for a while.

Reader behaviour: Hits & Kudos & Comments

Fan creators are only part of the story. Stats on engagement are a bit trick to interpret, I’ve got some plots here that tell us something about how works have been engaged with over time.

The obvious first to consider is Hits. Above is the total number of Hits given to works published each month. This is the current totals, not a historical snapshot, so we have a very strong bias towards early works, what we might call the Classics Effect. Works that have been around longer have had the chance to be seen by more people, and in particular those works that become must-read classics in a fandom, extending their exposure through prominence in top ranked works and recommendations.

To cut down on the advantage of the classics, we can also consider median hits per work for each month. As most works get a lot attention when they are first posted and then fade out of sight, the median number of hits reflects instead the ratio of readers to creators, basically how many eyeballs are around to look at the latest work, regardless of status. The median plot shows how the hyper-visibility of the few work available before 2012, and then a more steady curve once the fandom had gotten established on the platform after Series 2. Amazingly, the hit rate for the median work was steady through the big bumps in activity with later series, a 1000 hits for median works between 2013 and 2018, followed by a slow decline. I’d expect the 2020 works to continue gaining for a few months yet, but the median is probably 50-60% of what is was when the show was in production.

Kudos counts and medians show a similar story to hits, but there is a dip down around 2013 for kudos reflects the frenzy of productivity that saw the fandom grow during the Series 2 hiatus. Readers were getting spoiled! From the airing of Series 3 (2014) until a year following Series 4 (2018), the median work received an even 60ish kudos and 1000 hits, a niche audience that decreased to 50/750 through 2018-2019. The numbers of 2020 suggest a smaller community of readers again, though these numbers may still rise a bit in the next few months before the median works are forgotten.

The statistic that tells a different story is Comments. Looking at the total comments counts, there isn’t a drop after Series 3 (2014). Instead, the fandom compensated for changing numbers with more feedback and discussion attached to works. This is reflected in the median comment rate as well, which shows seasonal variation but doesn’t really drop off until 2020.

It’s remarkable that without fresh canon we continue to have new creators contributing to the fandom, and while that may be outpacing the readership somewhat, the standard of engagement has been very high. One could say the fandom is chugging along quite nicely!

What about Tags

So, with all that turnover and shifting population, is there a change in the kinds of works being posted? We can look at tags, all tags and freeform tags, to see if there were any meaningful trends.

First up, I did a creator-wave like analysis of works just for tags, to see how tags continue to be used after being introduced. Unlike the creators, tags clearly persist for years. After 2015, it looks like the core tag set has been established, with very few tags persisting in usage per subsequent year.

This graph reports numbers over time that are not proportional to the number of works or creators active. Instead, works on AO3 have been getting more and more tags over the years, with the average steadily growing from 5 in 2011 to 15 in 2020, with freeform tags (not characters or ships) from 2 to 8.

To get a sense of fic and tagging culture changes over time, I counted the most popular NEW tags of each year (wave). Note: this analysis is using exact matches, not the networked associations of tag meanings wrangled into AO3 today, so some things that pop up aren’t new concepts but instead newly popular TAGs for whatever they represent.

A little note from looking across all freeform tags, not just the new ones, we see a curious pattern with regards to two actions: First Kiss and Anal Sex. They appear amongst the most common tags as of 2014, neck in neck for two years, than Anal Sex drops off the top ten in 2016. From there out, First Kiss stays in the top 5 from that point on, while anal sex appears at rank 9 from 2017-2019 and is gone again in 2020. This probably says something about the fandom, somehow.

Fic asks: 16 and 18!

16. Do you re-read old fics? Is there a time in your writing you won’t go back to?

I reread old fics all the time, but I'm honestly more intrigued by the second part of this question so I'll focus on that. (:

A couple of my much older Venom fics, like honestly anything written before I dove into Kinktober 2018, feel a little rough to me. I was still working out even through October of that year what I wanted to see from my own works, as far as dialogue, pronouns, the way the symbiote is referred to, so on and so forth. Like I really enjoyed writing Cross-Cultural Purposes (it was my first VenomFlash fic, after all!) but there's a lot I'm really eehhh feeling about it. I don't revisit it nearly as often as some of the other ones I'm more pleased with (like "It's a Pretty Wonderful Life"... ah holiday fics my beloveds).

The only things I really won't reread like at all are some of my reeeeeeally old fics, like the ones on my fanfic net account. At least one of them, "cringe-worthy" doesn't even cut it, but I refuse to take it down because I'm still proud of all the work and hours I put into it.

The one exception is probably Emotion Detector, a Pokémon one-shot roughly 3k in length that I wrote in my later high school years. The fic is, funnily enough, in part about Mewtwo and Blaine's simultaneous cellular degeneration (I say "funny" because I'm in the middle of a massive read on Kaine who is... a clone... and suffered from cellular degeneration for years.... I never change). The Pocket Monsters Special manga had a huge impact on me and, as I'm sure it's clear by my love of all the Spider-Man and Venom adjacent clones, it continues to influence me to this day.

Sometimes I can only write when I'm inspired, but I do try to crank out at least a few words every night to the very best of my ability. Sometimes I'll even just pull up the word document on my phone and tap a few words in, in-between calls for my job. If I start getting frustrated or upset with myself though, honestly, I'll just stop. I'll close my laptop for the night because there's no sense getting frustrated over something that is supposed to be fun for me.

I do try to poke at one WIP a day. Even if it's just rereading it. Even if it's adding just one line, at least it's something!

1. What’s your favorite character(s) to write for?

Probably Nines, as it's easier for me to get into his head.

2. What character(s) do you find the most difficult to write for? Why?

Connor and Hank, which is why I don't write them much. Pretty much for the opposite reason of why I like Nines lol.

11. How would you describe your style? (Character/emotion/action-driven, etc)

Mm, I think this is kinda hard for me to answer bc the ways I'd like to write and the ways I actually write are very different. Ideally it would be more action-driven, but I think my strengths actually lie in dialogue.

13. When did you start writing fanfic?

2018, according to my AO3. I don't have any fics from before then because that's the first time I was able to break through a years-long writer's block

14. How do you feel about your older work?

Some of them are... Not great lol. I have a policy of never deleting old fics because of how much I hate when other authors do that even when their fics are actually my favourite, so I just have to live with the cringe. Some of them I'm still quite proud of, however.

15. What is the fanfic you’ve written that you’re most proud of?

It's hard to pick one. My currently-releasing fic, Feral, took me all year to complete, so obviously I'm proud of that. I also really like Twist, Crook, Bend because it was part of a Kinktober challenge and, while I didn't complete it, it was the most I wrote in a month ever.

22. Do you enjoy making OCs for your fanfics, or prefer sticking to canon characters?

I'm not great at making OCs, and I find I don't like reading about them in most fics. Very rarely there's one that I actually love, and I don't think I would be able to write at that level myself, so I usually only make one-off OCs if I need a random character for something.

30. Do you write down all your ideas? What makes you decide to write one versus the other?

I try to keep track of any prompts I come up with so I can work on them in the future. Mostly what gets me to work in something is just how excited I am for it in the moment; there are many fics that I haven't finished yet because my attention was grabbed by something else.

37. Would you ever collaborate with another writer for a story?

Absolutely! I've actually mentioned it to a few, and once I have more time I'd be totally down for a collab.

Also no Star Trek, I really thought 2018 was the year I wrote that but I guess my memory is still shit XD must have been 2017 wow, but at least there’s still new fandoms for when I get around to making a 2017/2016 list XD which will luckily be smaller cos I wrote fewer but longer fics in 2016/2017

-Overall, like 2019, 2018 was a bad year for me in terms of word count. I guess it was the beginning of my health really affecting my ability to write and my shift to accommodate for that by writing shorter things instead of trying and failing to write long fics like I used to (altho actually I think that started in 2017 really, guess I need to make the list to see XD). I’m still pretty proud though, cos I always wanted to write more sapphic content and doing sapphic september was something I didn’t think I’d manage but I did it 2x over =) and then off the heels of that success, I did Femslash Feb for HP in 2019 and some of Sapphic Sept 2019 too

-Kinktober was also super fun, even though I was a big ball of anxiety the whole time and burning out pretty badly after September. But I really got outside of my comfort zone to write several things I not only hadn’t written before, but also don’t even personally like XD I wrote a couple of my squicks and that was an interesting experience. I also gained a few new kinks, also an interesting experience XD

He meets Shoto a traveler who seems to have been on many adventures. Izuku is very curious about what stories the boy may have to tell but feels embarrassed by how nice the other treats him. One day his mother leaves to visit a shop in their old town and doesn't make it back home on time. Izuku worried goes to search for her and comes across an old castle. Here is where he meets him, a cursed Lord Katsuki filled with rage and with the appearance of a beast.

Katsuki's entire life up until this point had basically been a lie. He'd learned to be a master of deception, never letting anyone get too close, never letting anyone know his true self. Everything had been focused on one goal, graduating from high school and finally becoming the number one hero he knew he was destined to be. But his future was balanced on a knife's edge, thanks to the one person who always managed to find a way to get under his skin. He was the itch Katsuki just couldn't scratch, and no matter how hard he tried to deny it, Deku was always on his mind.
