as one direction once said, "you and me got a whole lot of history (whoa)," so we thought that this timeline might be a useful reference for you (and us!) to keep track of mike, will & co.'s very loaded history within the acswy universe! this will be updated as more information is revealed -- that said, feel free to holler at us if you feel we've missed anything!

only significant months and/or dates will be highlighted. if a month is skipped, nothing significant happened and/or significance has not been revealed yet. if there is a timeframe, it means no set date has been determined, but the event happened within that ballpark.

Why Peebs never got into fanficiton

It occurred to me the other day that despite having quite the voracious appetite for fiction back in my youth, I never got into fanfiction. So, how come? Part of it is just the circles I moved in back in the day, as the cis and presumably straight nerd sphere wasn't super into fanfiction, and by the time I started moving queer-wards my habits were kind of set. There is, however, another reason, and it's this particular wild ride I want to take you on today dear readers.

NOTE: It is difficult to tell this story to its full extent without sharing a bit more detail about my meatspace identity than I'd prefer to, so I have taken some steps to anonymize as much as I can. If you by chance have a hunch about the name of the fic I'm talking about, do free to drop me DM and talk about it, but please don't start flinging speculations on here. Thanks in advance.

With that meaty disclaimer out of the way, let's talk about that one time my mother sent me DBZ fanfiction. Back in the days of my prepubescence, my mother was the family's "computer person." She had some education in early IT, database work, and that kind of thing, so she was the one to introduce the Internet into our family. Mind you, this was in the days of the ISDN line, a step up from the 56k modems that took up your phone line, but still a slow and expensive solution compared to the broadband connections that would come some years later.

Not to sound like Grandpa Internet here, but the web was fundamentally different back then. Before the rise of Google, or halfway decent search engines, finding anything on the internet was a question of what search term you used and which of the many many search engines that were available you used, and what you found were of wildly differing quality. A lot of it was homemade web pages following this or that template, hosted on this or that hosting site, but there was very little in terms of connective tissue. This is all to say that when you came across something that was almost what you were looking for, you had the tendency to just check it out and see if it hit the spot eventually.

All this preamble is to say that when my mother sent me a mail with a link to a collection of stories written about a character whose given name was identical to our family name, I decided to give it a gander although I wasn't immensely interested in it. Turns out it was a loosely organized collection of stories about a fan-created character in the DBZ universe, although I did not know this because the ol' screamy punchman show hadn't really made it to my corner of the woods at this point.

This character, whose name was the same as my family name but as best as I know wasn't inspired by anything else than the sound of it, was the daughter of a particularly biologically implausible pairing in the Dragon Ball Z universe, and given how quickly said pairing decided to throw their contempt for biologists and their so-called facts in the reader's faces told me my mother probably hadn't read very far into the thing before sending it my way.

Now, I want to be clear, this wasn't a full-blown lemon or anything, but I was a sheltered kid what sex and sexuality were concerned, and it didn't take much more than a mention of doing the nasty and a tasteful fade to black, that in retrospect left some big questions unanswered, to have me quite flustered.

This isn't to say things didn't get considerably more citrus-y later on. You see, this character grows up and is cool and important in the way such characters often are. What is slightly more remarkable about her is that Alien Puberty hits her like a sackful of bricks and goes what I can only describe as "Transformatively-Fuck-Crazy" on a supporting character. The whole consent situation around the thing is real iffy I realize, now in retrospect, but at the time I was mostly in shock over where this little reading session had taken me.

The session, however, was far from done. Not much came out of this alien consent-light fuck-berserkergang, however, as our heroine had some time travel to get into. At the time I was very confused about the time travel just suddenly being a thing, but later on, I came to realize Dragon Ball Z was just Kind Of Like That.

You see, some Jessica Rabbit-looking alien with a clashing primary colors color scheme and an understanding of the concept of clothing that is adventurous to say the least who wants to kick her ass but finds herself unable to do so on account of the heroine being actually quite good at this ass-kicking business. Our scantily-clad would-be conqueror does the most logical thing in her situation and goes back in time to kill the protagonist's dad. You know, as you do when you have near-perfect mastery of time travel and a grudge. You'd think she'd get into some Kang The Conqueror shit, but maybe that's the next point on her agenda, idk.

This villain also could turn invisible, so nobody's going to accuse her of being a one-trick pony. How does our heroine beat this somewhat overstatted threat? I can't remember, but if I were to guess, it ended in a cliffhanger and lots of screaming, so you can't blame the author for diverging from the form language of the show if nothing else.

So that's the story of my main first encounter with fanfiction. It left me confused in more ways than one, and it kind of became a bit emblematic of the format for me once I figured out that it was in fact fanfiction. Was that unfair of the younger me? Perhaps, while I can't really claim it as a good read, I did keep reading it until I was done. Whether that says more about the fic or about me, I am sure I do not know.

FFXIV Write 2023 Day 17 - Impulse (Free Day)

Arashi, true to form, was moping.

Fareena let out an irritated sigh as she observed the fabled, vaunted Warrior of Light staring out at the open ocean, blade not at her hip but several feet to her side. As if she was afraid to even have it at her hip. Fareena had hoped she would have gotten over this silly Echo nonsense when she’d faced Zenos again at Doma, but clearly not. Well, she’d just have to deal with it on her-

Fareena’s feet disagreed, apparently, taking her directly to Arashi’s side. Traitors. Soon enough she was standing a comfortable distance away, purposefully not looking in Arashi’s direction. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Arashi glance her way, but neither made a move to speak first. Finally Fareena broke the awkward silence, inwardly annoyed at having lost the unspoken contest.

“Won’t stop being blue if you stare at it, little lizard.” That earned an annoyed huff from Arashi, but it got the desired result as the Au Ra swiveled to face her. She tried to look annoyed, but with the wind blowing the way it was her expression was mostly obscured by her red-violet hair in her face. This is why I always keep mine tied up.

“What do you want, Fareena?” Arashi’s tone was its usual mix of flat and deeply annoyed. But she couldn’t hide the glance towards the sword leaning against the deck between them. Fareena raised a perfect eyebrow as she turned towards the weary Warrior of Light.

“You, obviously. You’re so morose you’re bringing down the whole ship.” Which wasn’t true, of course. The crew were still merrily working away and swapping shanties, the twins were on the opposite side of the ship watching a pod of dolphins play, Sanda was… probably doing some silly ninja thing. Even Stalwart was out on the deck, polishing her rapier and enjoying some sunshien for once. Arashi’s long look at the assembled parties told her exactly what she thought of Fareena’s comment. Fareena bit down an irritated sigh and tried again.

“Fine, maybe you’re not that bad. But you can’t mope around forever, you know. That silly little blonde is worried about you.” Arashi couldn’t hide the instinctive flinch at the mention of Lyse. You’ve got it bad, girl. Young love was quite the thing.

“Easy for you to say,” Arashi quietly replied. The tension was thick in her voice. “You don’t see your mother dying every time you touch your weapon.” Fareena doubted she would care if she saw her mother dying, but it felt prudent not to mention that. Some people actually did have loving relationships with their parents, apparently. Fine, drastic measure it is. Without a second thought Fareena crossed the distance between them, took Arashi’s hand in her own and forced the sword into their combined grip with her free hand. And they remembered.

Several moments later the pair were on their knees, the sword clutched tightly in their hands. Fareena’s head hurt, and not just from the Echo. Arashi was rubbing her forehead too, looking furious. “You have no right-”

“I have every right, damn you!” Fareena snarled. “You are a liability like this! How am I supposed to trust you to watch my back if you freeze up every time you need to draw your katana? You’re supposed to be the Warrior of Light, not some weak-kneed coward who voids herself every time she touches her sword! You’re supposed to be better than this! Better than me!” People were staring at them now, making Fareena realise just how much she’d raised her voice. With a huff she got to her feeet, half dragging Arashi with her. “With me, lizard.”

Still holding the sword Fareena stalked down into the cabins, not knowing or caring if Arashi followed. Prove me right, girl. Show me you’re not strong enough so I can shoulder this burden alone. Then, after a few moments she heard the quick footsteps of Arashi stalking after her. Fareena stifled the sigh of relief that bubbled up inside her. She made her way to her cabin, slamming the door wide open and gesturing for Arashi to enter. With a glare Arashi followed, only to have the sword thrown at her a moment later. Without thinking she grabbed it… and nothing happened.

“Thought so,” was Fareena’s reply as she shut the door behind her. Arashi was staring at the blade, apparently shocked that she wasn’t reliving the trauma of her mother’s valiant end again. “It’s you triggering the Echo visions, not the blade. You’ve drawn the blade in the heat of battle without the visions overtaking you before, but only when you weren’t thinking about it. So you’ve got to stop thinking about it.”

Arashi gingerly put down the sword on the all-too-small bed, sitting down next to it. “How did you know that?”

Fareena shrugged, leaning against the far wall. “I just had a hunch, that’s all.” A lie, but an easy one to tell.

And an easy one to call out. “Bullshite.” Arashi’s eyes narrowed, brow furrowing. “What do you know about the Echo, Fareena? Why do you know so much about it? We’ve travelled together for over a year now, why all these secrets still?” To protect you. To protect me.

Instead Fareena looked Arashi in the eye, violet irises meeting piercing blue. “How old do you think I am, Arashi?” She watched Arashi’s face go from suspicion to confusion. Arashi took a moment, then replied.

“You look to be around twenty-five summers, but from your mannerisms I’d put you in your late thirties.”

“Wrong. I am one-hundred-and-nine summers old. I should be one-hundred-and-fourteen.”

Astonishment. Disbelief. Horrified acceptance. They all flashed across Arashi’s features as she struggled for words. Fareena continued.

“I was born in Dalmasca to a viera woman and her hyur lover. The hyur vanished soon after I came into the world. My mother never loved me like a mother should. We fought, until one day I couldn’t take the fighting and left. I was twenty-five at the time. I found Bozja in my travels some fifteen years later and spend the next… too many convincing a stubborn old Hrothgar to teach me the ways of gunbreaking.” She couldn’t help the fond smile as she remembered old Rostik. Are you still watching over me, old man?

“So you were-”

“Yes, I was alive before the Garlean empire began. And yes, I received my Echo shortly after it came to be. I ignored it. Told myself it was nothing to concern myself with. Then the Garleans took Bozja. Then they destroyed it.”

Arashi, to her credit, stayed silent. She couldn’t help the look of pity on her face though. Fareena ignored it.

“I followed the Garleans to Eorzea. Got involved with the Circle of Knowing and assisted the great Louisoux in his quest to end their menace. Fought gods and monsters and Nael van Darnus and failed, utterly, to stop Meteor. To stop Bahamut.” The look of shock on Arashi’s face was almost enough to make it worth spilling all of these secrets. Almost.

“So you were… You ARE… the Warrior of Light that everyone forgot!”

“Yes.” It hurt more than Fareena expected to say that single word. “And they deserve to forget me. I failed them. I failed you and your sister. I ignored every possible warning that Hydaelyn gave me and the world paid the price. Still pays it as the Empire marches on.”

Fareena expected a lot of things from Arashi. Outrage. Hatred. Even disappointment. She didn’t expect Arashi to stand up and wrap her arms tightly around Fareena’s stomach. It was too much. Numbly, Fareena found her arms wrapping around Arashi’s in turn.

“I’m not alone,” was Arashi’s muffled reply, full of wonder and… something Fareena couldn’t quite place. “All this time, I thought I was the only one she looked to for this. But you were there the whole time, making sure I was treading the right path.”

“Yes.” No. Fareena clutched her fellow Warrior of Light as tightly as she could. But we’ll walk it together now, no matter what comes.

What happened with Barbour ?

Dear Barbour Anon,

My favorite kind of Anon, even if I know the question has recently been asked again and not in this corner. Never mind, I think it's time to talk about it, too.

I bought my first Barbour (entry-level, so olive) Bedale wax jacket 25 years ago, from their (long gone, now) shop on Boulevard Raspail, in Paris. It was a mandatory clothing item to own if you wanted to properly mingle with the law school crowd (it still is) and it ended up being one of my most prized possessions, possibly a part of me. I still have it somewhere, back home. Two more followed, along with a fetishist array of shirts, scarves, beanies and even one of those sturdy crossbody bags you can fit half a house in. So you can imagine my absolute thrill when I found out, very very late, that S had had a rather substantial collaboration with them, from 2016 and until 2019.

I am very bad with timelines, as you probably know and possibly even cackle about, but still: S was appointed as the company's first ever Global Brand Ambassador on July 16, 2016. His mission statement was very precisely defined by the brand and for some reason we'll analyze a bit later, this is important:

A shirt and vest signature collection followed in 2017 and 2018, with the contract being renewed. Advertisement was absolutely gorgeous and designed to shape a very positive image, both for S and the brand. Last autumn's SS Gin promo retained some of that irresistible aesthetic DNA and I discussed it at length.

See for yourself, Anon. The fandom endlessly discussed the first long clip (with the chocolate labrador), but I have no idea if these two have been seen, let alone debated. If they did, let that be my nostalgic mistake.

And then disaster stroke, with S's trip to Ha-wa-wee 1.0, in the spring of 2019. A short reel, featuring a rather agglomerated boat trip, was posted on socials. Unfortunately for S, it also featured an allegedly horrifying scene involving the 'traditional' bludgeoning to death of a tuna fish. Emotions ensued and as it often happens here, they spun out of control. Many people, including some of the most vocal S haters, tagged Barbour in their diatribes, filled with environmentalist indignation. They suggested this guy (who did not participate to the savagery and I would be even unsure he realized what was going on) was, by no reasonable means, a proper 'embodiment of the brand's identity, values and aspirations' (remember that mission statement?).

Tone deaf as ever in the midst of a serious PR crisis, S put friendship above anything else, and publicly praised the boat's owner, calling him 'the heart and soul of the island', if I remember well. I still would like to think he has no idea what the hell exactly happened. And then, when somebody finally (August 2019) asked Barbour on Insta about their collaboration with S, they got this politely dry, but clear answer:

"We don't have any plans for a collaboration with SH in the near future" means, in my book and to my understanding, "we are never going to work with this guy again". Truly, some people in here who dare to give morality lessons to others, should be proud of themselves: they did it knowingly and in a very organized way, using multiple sock accounts, to give the impression of a collective retching reflex. To cut the story short, the dread of any ad campaign on this planet.

The effort was genuine. The result of that collaboration was very good. Take, for example, this somewhat heartbreaking customer review by an American guy who has no idea who SRH is and who bought one of those jackets from a Barbour factory warehouse, in 2021, with a hefty rebate (70% off). Clearly something Barbour wanted to get rid of at all costs - what a pity and really what a SHAME on all those hypocrites who will never admit to a public assassination by the book:

This time, I am absolutely not sorry for the length, Anon. This is something that still makes me boil. Unfairness and cheap nastiness simply disgust me.

You want to go back, don't you? A timeline where you don't have to pretend, or hide the ring of light that was given to you years ago. To have to pretend that you don't love the brothers, and that you'll be their attendant.

Mammon certainly is too big for a baby, but you got to keep a whole mansion in exchange.

But your home is not there. Not in the Celestial Realm. Nor in the Devildom.

It's just where your demons are.

When you felt an invisible force constricting you, and Lucifer's frown staring at you, you wondered how far he would go.

The brothers are not the same. You see Lucifer become more and more closed off day by day and wonder how your Lucifer does. How Mammon keeps doubting himself and yet steps forward to the challenge. When Levi keeps Henry 1.0 in his room and finds a friend in him. When Asmodeus looks at himself and can't bring it in him to see himself again—

You have got to stop crying. Or else the brothers might see.

When Beel went into a frenzy and had to be restrained. When the loss of their sister was fresh and the wounds still hurt, so much that Belphie lunged at you again and the thud that followed after as you were thrown from the attic resonated in your mind.

You swear that when you find this Nightbringer fellow you'll punch the shit out of them and have an ambulance on stand-by.

You miss your demons.

But for now, you'll have to make do.

And Solomon is here with you. Ready, and proud of your capabilities. He knew you would find solace in this room.

It's now just the two of you in another timeline.

"What is the Better Bones AU?"

I'm so glad you asked, convenient question-speaker!

Better Bones (BB) is a full-series rewrite project that seeks to have a more conclusive stance on anti-authoritarianism, revamp the bonds and beliefs of individual characters to make more interesting drama and politics, and overhaul the progression of morality and history throughout the timeline to make the society of the Clans into a living, changing culture.

To do that, we've got 5 goals;

Fix the tangled family tree and give it clearer rules, expanding on kinship between cats while not neglecting friendships

Make the environment accurate to northwestern England, including education on how different biomes are managed and lists of local flora and fauna, to understand how environment has impacted Clan culture.

Build out technology by giving the Clans tool use and food preparation, additional traditions and customs, their own language, and medicinal treatment guides from sniffles up to HRT.

Change the themes of canon by addressing its problematic elements, giving the cats consistent politics and making the narrative conclusively anti-authoritarian.

Be cool as fuck, with wilder deaths, more clanborn villains, bloodier battles, and even MORE complicated innerClan drama

BB is told in notes and outlines, with the "end point" being a full skeleton for the entire series complete with chapter-by-chapter notes, which anyone would be able to write out fully, just as if they were a ghostwriter being handed a draft.

This project is open-source. I encourage you to take any inspiration from this AU that you'd like, or use the Clan culture expansions for your own projects. They don't HAVE to be warriors-related, we have a few folks who like to apply parts of this project to Rainworld! Go bananas.

I only ask that you don't steal any drawn art (as seen in the fanart, character summaries, and culture expansions) to pass it off as your own. Please respect the contributions of these artists.

Why I think Russell Adler is going to make a comeback in COD 2024

WARNING⚠️: Contains spoilers for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Disclaimer: This is all just speculation on my behalf of course. I've just tried piecing stuff together for fun because Russ is one of my fave BO characters even though he's a bitch but i need more Adler content stat. <33

Let's get into it peeps. HEAR ME OUT.

Buckle up. Gonna be one hell of a ride folks 🤪

We'll start off with some random/background info.

Russ was born on February 12th 1937 so that would make him 53/54 in the Gulf War era. This actually isn't that old because if you think about it, Woods was about to turn 51 in 1981 during the Cold War campaign. What's a few more years?

We last saw Adler in action post-campaign in Warzone 1.0 cinematics but we've been kept in the dark about Adler's whereabouts post-1984 (after being brainwashed and killing Stitch LOL).

This meanie in a beanie wasn't forgotten about, oh no. He appears in the new cinematic intros on startup for both MWII (2022) and MWIII (2023). See below:

I personally believe Adler was a great addition to the Black Ops roster and is essentially the new Black Ops 'cover boy' now. Would be such a shame and a missed opportunity not to include a character like him in the upcoming COD. One who is morally grey, does whatever he deems necessary to get the job done - a bit like Cpt. Price in MW. Got the COD fans riled up about him brainwashing and pulling the trigger on Bell too - he's already got the spotlight in both a good and bad way.

Now, let's explore my main reasoning as to why I think Mr Shades 2.0 is most likely coming back in late 2024...

From this, we know there will be a huge focus on the CIA and who's a CIA clandestine special officer? Mhm, you guessed it - Russell Adler.

Now, according to the events of BO2, it's evident which characters have the possibility of returning out of our original BO trio - Jason Hudson, Frank Woods and Alex Mason.

💫 Alex is presumed dead after Frank shot him so he's out the picture in '90/91 until 2025 when they canonically meet again.

🪵 Woods would be in his 60s during this time too so I'll let you decide whether that's too old for him to be in GW.

Edit: Woods got SPAS-12'd in the kneecaps on Dec 20th 1989 by Raul Menendez so uh...yeah

That brings me onto the rest of the safehouse crew. Since GW is a direct sequel to CW, it would make sense for some characters to carry over if possible:

We, as the player/Bell, get to choose whether Park or Lazar die (or both lovebirds) in 'End of the Line'. It's highly unlikely they'll return unless the devs make one decision canon maybe.

There could be a chance we see Sims again given his bond with Adler (Da Nang etc.), his age (late 40s in GW) and his status (alive).

That leaves the man himself, Russ. Everything from his age to the fact he's CIA and was the deuteragonist in COD 2020's campaign just makes sense for him to have at least a lil cameo or even a larger role, don't you think?

Oh lookie - they dropped syringe-lover's famous line in a zombies post. Why would COD just drop it so casually like that without a reason and years after since CW came out? They could've said absolutely anything else but no, this was purposeful.

As one of the OG’s of this ship, I am still not over the gaslighting attempts of Tom and Z for all those years. Literally our ship was tiny back then compared to what Tomdaya fandom is now.

And still, majority of Tomdaya shippers today still believe T and Z’s lying words on not having dated before 2020, so they are also the ones who constantly go “aww, they are the epitome of best friends to lovers slow-burn”. When there was actually no fucking slow burn because Ms Z asked him out asap and couldn’t wait to get in his pants and their infatuation with each other was quick and mutual. So, yeah, this shit has been sailing since late 2016 but those who believe this are still a small number of people compared to the current large fandom.

I know at this point Tom and Z admitting they blatantly lied then is not something on their top to-do list , cause I am sure they do not mind it as much as we do, if most people think they didn’t date until 2020/2021. They probably like how it was sick they got to fool so many people and got away with dating under people’s noses. But it still freaking annoys me, and I hope one day they spill it in an interview, even if it happens ten years down the line, like in 2034 or something . I don’t care when. But I want my “told you so” moment to these idiots in the social media comments.

And every time under some random post, among shippers, you can see most are still either clueless about their actual timeline or foolishly believing TZ’s lies about them being “just friends” and believing TZ’s fake “confirmation” that they didn’t date then. And they are painting Tom as the poor simp who waited for Z on the sidelines while she went through the likes of Jacob until finally deciding to give Tom a chance. Awww, poor short king Tom finally got Z after six years of being friend-zoned and secretly pining after her and crying in his sleep. This is basically the gist of the scenario they believe in. 🙄🙄🙄

A timeline of Aziraphale and Crowley's fear and belief in propaganda and what it tells us about their relationship and actions

OK, you guys liked my flowchart slides, let's see how much you like my graphs! I wanted to take a closer look at the levels of propaganda belief that we see Aziraphale and Crowley, as well as the levels of fear they have throughout history, both for themselves and each other. So I spent a bit of time giving them scores on each of these out of 10 and then plotted the charts, as you do. Please note that the timelines are not linear (otherwise we would have a lot of empty space in history and a lot of data points closer to the current time), but they still give a good idea of the evolution of their relationship.

So let's start with the overall view:

Crowley's situation is much more stable, while Aziraphale is on an emotional roller-coaster, which is interesting as Crowley is perceived as the more emotional of the two.

Now let us look separately at the fear:

From around the start of the Arrangement Aziraphale's fear of retribution to himself goes down, which is likely what makes the Arrangement possible. From then on the fear of retribution to Crowley mostly becomes his larger concern.

Crowley is generally convinced they both are safe until he gets punished by Hell.

Let's take a look at how their own perception of danger aligns to that  of the other:

Aziraphale's perception of danger to Crowley and Crowley's own perception of danger to himself are not too far apart, they have the same curve. So Crowley is able to communicate the situation he is in pretty clearly, and what is more they both agree that the perceived danger from Hell is real.

Aziraphale seems to expect more danger to himself, while Crowley is certain he is ok, up until 2019 (and Crowley is right!)

Look at the comparative fear for each other timeline

Crowley is convinced that Aziraphale is a good angel and thus is not worried about him getting in trouble with Heaven.  He only changes his mind once the Armageddon rolls around. But we can see him getting worried in S2 and it is clear that with everything he knows about the treatment of those who go against Heaven’s plans, he will be extremely worried about Aziraphale in S3.

Aziraphale is aware of the potential consequences for Crowley, but for the most part he has no reason to worry that much about him post Armageddon 1.0, until he meets Shax.

And now let us take a look at their beliefs in propaganda and especially zoom in into propaganda vs fear for Crowley's safety from Aziraphale's perspective

Now the compared belief in propaganda between Aziraphale and Crowley is not surprising (especially not for Crowley – you can really see the effect of the fall). What is interesting is that Aziraphale’s belief in it wanes at two critical points: once in 1967 where he can’t stand the thought of Crowley’s risk of destruction and again at Armageddon 1.0 when everything that he loves is at risk (Earth and Crowley).

So now we come to the key part: Aziraphale’s belief in propaganda vs his fear for Crowley’s well-being. To me this is the ultimate proof of Aziraphale choosing Crowley's wellbeing over heaven. The greater the perceived risk to Crowley, the lower the belief in Heaven's propaganda. Aziraphale will always choose his personal knowledge of Crowley as a good person and his love for him over any sort of "high principles" Heaven insists on. And it ties in nicely with my other meta on Aziraphale’s choice in the final 15.

TF2 Blender Guide: Remove Cosmetic Clipping

Want no outfit clipping? Here are 3 methods to remove clipping between a TF2 merc's default outfit and cosmetics they're wearing (or even custom outfits you've made for them). These methods are non-destructive compared to deleting parts of a mesh, which cannot be undone.

Guide by Katy133. The example I'm using is Scout wearing the Ripped Rider jacket cosmetic.

Method 1: Use an Invisible Material

Recommended situations to use this method: You want to quickly make the mesh underneath invisible, but only parts of that mesh (example: Hiding the visibility of Scout's torso won't work because his arms are also on that layer).

Select the part of the merc's model that's clipping through the cosmetic (in this example, it's Scout's default shirt, which is part of his torso model). In the Materials tab, select Add New Material Slot (+ button to the right of the materials list). Press the +New button to add a new material to it. (See: Image 1, below)

Rename this new material something clear (like invisible_material). Set the new material to have 0.0 Alpha (under the Surface header) and change the Blend Mode to Alpha Clip or Alpha Blend (under Settings). (Image 2)

Go into Edit Mode. Toggle select faces mode. Select the faces that are clipping. These need to be faces that never need to be seen by the camera (they're being covered by the cosmetic). (If it's difficult to select the faces, go into Local View mode with the model selected by selecting View -> Local View -> Toggle Local View, or by pressing your Local View hotkey.) Various methods to make selecting the faces easier include switching your selection mode to Lasso, and turning on X-Ray in your view (circled in blue in the attached image). (Image 3 and image 4)

With the faces selected, select invisible_material from the materials list and press the Assign button. (Image 5)

Go back to Object mode (and leave Local View if you haven't already). The faces assigned to the invisible material should now be fully transparent, leaving the cosmetic covering it.

Optional: If you wish to animate the invisible material's visibility: Go to the materials tab, select the invisible_material, and Press the dot button to the right of the shape key's Value. This adds a keyframe. Yellow means that keyframe in the timeline has a keyframe. Green means the value has keyframes but not on the current frame. Influence set to 0.0 is off, 1.0 is on 100%. This can be useful if you're animating Scout putting on the cosmetic for example.

Method 2: Use a Mask Modifier

Recommended situations to use this method: You want to make parts of the mesh underneath invisible without editing the applied materials of the mesh (example: You use the Materials list to quickly select vertex and reassigning vertex to a new material slot would slow down your process).

Select the part of the merc's model that's clipping through the cosmetic. Go to the Data properties tab and add a new vertex group (+ button to the right of the vertex group list). Rename it something clear, like Mask_mesh. (See: Image 1, below)

Go to the Modifiers property tab. Press Add Modifier. Add a Mask. In Vertex Group, select Mask_mesh. Then press the Invert button to the right of that. (Image 2)

Go back to the Data properties tab. Go into Edit Mode. Select the vertex that's clipping through the cosmetic. (If it's difficult to select the faces, go into Local View mode, switch the selection tool to Lasso, and toggle X-Ray mode--see: Method 1 above for details.) (Image 3)

With the vertex selected, select the Mask_mesh vertex group and press the Assign button. (Image 3)

Optional: If you wish to animate the invisible material's visibility: Go to the modifiers tab. In the Mask Modifier, Press the dot button to the right of Threshold. This adds a keyframe. Yellow means that keyframe in the timeline has a keyframe. Green means the value has keyframes but not on the current frame. Since the Mask is inverted, Threshold set to 0.0 is on, 1.0 is off. This can be useful if you're animating Scout putting on the cosmetic for example. (Image 4)

Method 3: Use Shape Keys

Recommended situations: There's clipping, but you want the vertex of the default outfit to stay visible (example: you want to adjust Scout's backpack strap so it's entirely layered over his new cosmetic jacket). Or you want to animate when the clipping adjustment happens (example: An animation of Scout putting on a cosmetic, wherein you see Scout in his default outfit and his his cosmetic within the same shot).

Select the part of the merc's model that's clipping through the cosmetic. Go to the Data properties tab and add a new Shape Key (the + button to the right of the Shape Kay list). This is the Basic layer (default shape of the mesh), don't ever touch it. Now add a new shape key layer (by default, it's named Key 1). Rename it something clear like Clipping_fix. Select it, and set it to 1.0. (See: Image 2, below)

Go into Edit Mode. Make sure that the Clipping_fix shape key is the one selected (otherwise, you are editing either the Basic shape key layer or a facial flex shape key, which can have destructive results). Start selecting vertex and moving them where you want. (If it's difficult to select the faces, go into Local View mode, switch the selection tool to Lasso, and toggle X-Ray mode--see: Method 1 above for details.) (Image 3)

Go back to Object mode. The shape key should now be affecting the mesh. (Image 4)

If you wish to animate the shape key: Press the dot button to the right of the shape key's Value. This adds a keyframe. Yellow means that keyframe in the timeline has a keyframe. Green means the value has keyframes but not on the current frame. Influence set to 0.0 is off, 1.0 is on 100%. (Image 4)
