[Favorite Characters 26/?] Preed [Titan A.E., 2000]

“Going somewhere?”

I just watched this movie for the first time and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Preed is a sleazy character, voiced by Nathan Lane, of all people, but he’s doing a more refined, self-important voice than what you’d usually expect. I think he’s supposed to be a bat-themed alien, but if you just look at his skull it’s like someone put one of the Land Before Time dinosaurs in an evil anthro blender. This is somebody’s type, I’m sure of it.

The frustrating thing about this film is that it’s written around an intelligent, high-concept idea, and it has great character animation throughout - my problem is it’s kind of boring and a bit ugly. The CGI hasn’t aged well. Still, Preed was enough of a standout that I wanted to showcase him here. Why is that last shot so dynamic??

Goofing around in Clip Studio Paint again. I could say this is a deeply thought-out reference to how in Titan AE Gune repeatedly grumbles about being stuck on the ship and never gets more than a few feet away from it in the whole movie...but we all know I just wanted to put him in this outfit. XD

literally No One cares cause like no one else remembers this movie but Good God i wish titan a.e. had been more about character development and arcs rather than just. looking pretty. like don't get me wrong, it Is a pretty movie and i Do like it. but also.

there was so much they could've done even in the limited movie time frame and they just. didn't! literally no thought to korso selling out the human race specifically because he's depressed and genuinely feels like there's no hope. barely redeeming him at the end but not even exploring How he got to that point - how cale gave him hope again, how he saw a genuine future he believed in because he believed in cale! it's just a little bit hinted at but not at all given the attention it deserves.

and then of course, cale himself!!! the two of them literally go through the same journey of feeling like there's no more hope for humans but learning through their connections with others that there is. and we get to see that with cale!!! it makes sense, he's the main character and all, but if we can see that with him, why not with korso?

i just,,, ough,,,, this movie had such great potential but they focused so much on the art and graphics and effects and like Yes it's all very pretty but the characters,,, the characters!!!!

You know what I want but will never get? Titan A.E. Prequels about Sam Tucker and his crew, the lead up to the destruction of Earth, the flight from earth with whoever Sam Tucker was talking to when he said "Bring me Down" and who must have died on the Titan with him all those long years ago.

The casting in 90’s Don Bluth films always hit so weird because they would cast ALL of these fairly well known actors and then (with the exception of, like Robin Williams as Batty and even then you cannot hide Robin Williams) there was just NOTHING there beyond voice to indicate oh that’s x actor and sometimes you’d have to be hella familiar with that actor to recognize the voice. When Disney pulls big names, they will not let you forget about it for a second (Phil just looks like Danny DeVito; Mushu looks like Eddie Murphy, etc), but in those Don Bluth films it was like Hank Azaria came in with a Polish accent to play a bat, and wait oh hey now Nathan Lane is playing a greasy predatory straight alien (well I’m fairly sure he played Preed as bisexual or at least a deeply closeted predatory straight but that’s another rant), which I mean NATHAN LANE. HE WAS TIMON!! When you see Timon you think Aw yeah that’s Nathan Lane. I CONTINUOUSLY FORGET Nathan Lane plays Preed until it slaps me upside the head. IT IS JUST NATHAN LANE’S NORMAL VOICE ONLY EVIL GUYS.

I dare you to look, at the very least, the cast lists of Ferngully, Anastasia, and Titan AE and have your mind blown if you haven’t already.
