Nowhere near as exciting as your ex-agent Dabi and Mafia family Tomura idea, but what about a bakery AU starring:

Kurogiri, as the owner who hires people shunned and maligned for their quirks to give them a sense of belonging and worth

Tenko, as the anxious, angry young man forced by his dad to find a job or be kicked out onto the street

Touya, as the lead baker with mysterious burn scars who teaches Tenko the trade while teasing/challenging him constantly

Toga, as the energetic pastry chef who loves her crushes, blood, and the art of food in that order

Spinner, as the barista who no longer hides his mutation quirk and is fiercely protective of his friends

Magne, as the manager who's more like a big sister to the staff than their supervisor

Twice, as the prep cook with a sad past but hopes for the future

Mustard, as the high school student working the counter part time and always coming up with "experiments" when no one's watching him

Atsuhiro Sako, as the supply salesman with a flair for the dramatic

Plus, Moonfish, Muscular, UA kids/teachers, and others appearing as customers

Basically, Tenko applies for a job as an assistant baker because 1. It's at night so he won't have to deal with people, 2. It doesn't require any previous experience, and 3. His dad threatened to kick him out of the house if he doesn't "stop wasting his life on video games and either get a job or go to school". He nervously shows up for the interview and is surprised at how kind both Kurogiri and Magne are to him despite his awkwardness, scars/skin, and his quirk. In this AU, people with quirks considered "potentially villainous" are closely monitored and treated as if they're destined to become criminals (a lot like the reactions to Shinsō's quirk). His father often brings up how Tenko accidentally killed the family dog when his quirk activated for the first time at the age of four or five. Years of mental and emotional abuse like this reinforces the idea that his son must have been born bad and any attempts at striving for something will end in failure.

To Tenko's pleasant surprise he gets hired. His first night on the job starts with Kurogiri teaching him how to mix dough and put it through a machine that turns it into bagels. (BTW, I work as a baker at a bagel shop, which is how this silly idea came about.) Tenko tells himself it's just like playing a video game, and quickly starts getting the hang of things.

Then he meets Touya, who's supposed to teach him the actual baking process. Tenko's immediately annoyed by Touya's attitude and teasing ("You Decay any of this equipment and it's coming out of your paycheck, mophead"). He throws himself into the task, determined to shut Touya up. And secretly, Touya's impressed by his show of determination and tackling something new. He hopes to himself that Tenko lasts unlike other people who fell by the wayside.

And Tenko does stay, getting to know the others who've come to form a sort of family at the bakery. He becomes close with Himiko and Shuichi in particular, empathizing with the isolation they endured and the harsh demands Toga's own parents put on her. These new friendships make putting up with Touya every night worth it.

Then Tenko overhears an angry phone conversation and realizes Touya's not all smooth confidence and devil may care attitude. That his home life may be just as messy and painful as his. Bit by bit, Tenko learns more about his coworker and opens up in turn, each seeing they have quite a bit in common. Rivalry turns to friendship (though it still has a healthy streak of competition). Over time, however, things between them start to shift yet again. The usual jokes ("Aw, did you burn your fingers? Want me to kiss them and make it better?") cause awkward silences and flustered backpedaling. The number of accidental hand touches and bumping into each other increases ten fold. Eventually, it gets to a point where they can't deny romantic feelings snuck up on them when they weren't looking.

Like I said, not exciting or action-packed. Most of the conflict would be about the characters dealing with unhealthy family relationships, overcoming the terrible things they were taught to believe about themselves, and society's crappy treatment of them, I think. And they'd fight both by sticking together and supporting one another rather than being forced to become villains. It'll take on a clearer shape as it's written.

Thanks for letting me ramble! I just wanted to share so maybe my mind will settle down and let me work on this.

Anon, please you need to write this. We all have different ideas, different approaches, different portrayals and points of view. THAT'S NOT BAD. In fact, that's the opposite of bad. That's why we get a great range of fanfics, that's why we can enjoy new things and cry with new genres or enjoy new content.

And I absolute adore whenever people bring their knowledge about something into an au. I could have never come with anything so well written or so complex because I have never worked in a bakery, but you have! You have the ingredients, you have the tools, and look at what lovely au you have created!

I'm obsessed with this. I'm obsessed with the softness of this. This is like a butterfly kiss on your cheek on a summer afternoon while you watch a lake reflect the sky.

I want to know more about this. I want you to tell me more about your fanfic ideas and even if you want, I can help you write this, but please, let others enjoy this as much as I enjoy it. Because it's so so so so good.

A lot of villains fans are looking for this type of comfort. Damn, it is a dream to see a bakery filled with people who are getting better and finally having a chance in life, becoming a family, finding love, fighting their abusers in their own ways.

You even gave them the specific jobs. I'm— 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 this is so well thought. Really, please write this. Please.

I've seen some people say that Yashahime is canon only to the OG anime, but I'd make the argument that it's not even that! Think about it:

While the Inuyasha anime did mess around with the manga lore or make up their own here and there, they still did bring to attention some lore that they CLEARLY ignore/retcon in Trashahime. Like in one of the 1st episodes of the OG anime where Myoga explains how Tessaiga was made to protect Izayoi, Inuyasha's mother. Yet, later on in Yashahime we find through a flashback that Touga apparently had Tessaiga long before he met Izayoi? What?

I actually talked about this next one with @loveyou-x3000 a long while back, but remember Hosenki l? Remember on how in the OG anime we found out he was the one whole created the black pearl that was in Inuyasha's eye? Well, I apparently found out that by Yashahime's logic, the black pearl was created by Izayoi's or somebody's tears? I'm sorry, but how does that make sense? (Correct me if I'm wrong there)

They even ignore the lore they created themselves from the OG anime, like when InuKag give Moroha the lip stick shell that was destroyed by Naraku in the Anime-only episode "Tragic Love Song of Destiny". What, am I just supposed to assume that InuYasha's been walking around with a bunch of his mother's old make-up stuff this whole time? And that he never thought to give one to Kagome, his wife, even tho he gave it to Kikyou and his own daughter?

Let's also not forget what the director has said in one of the recent interviews about demons apparently throwing their kids out in the wild as a "test of courage and cowardice", AKA Demon parents apparently not caring about their kids and abandoning them similar to how lions apparently treat their cubs. This absolute bullshit because not only is this not true in the manga, but the OG anime itself has shown several examples of demons caring about and raising their kids!!! Think about Shippo's dad, that little cat demon's dad when Inu trained with Totosai, Kuroro (demon cat that looks like Kirara), that demon dad who got his head chopped off by Hokudoshi, and even that insect demon that Jeniji killed who went out to teach its offspring how to hunt and feed! Its important too note that a good chunk of these parents are anime-only characters.

Hell, even the demon parents who didn't get to raise their kids still gave a fuck about them!!! Just look at Shiori's dad who clearly had every intention of raising his kid and even when he was dead STILL came back to protect her from her grandfather! What about Jeniji's dad who left his farm to his son so that both he and his mother would have a place to call home!?

What about Touga who sacrificed his own life so that his hanyou son could live??? (And that was from one of the movies mind you, so its anime lore.)

So now your telling me that the demon way of parenting was to leave your kids out in the middle of the woods when they're not even old enough to hold up their heads by themselves? If the OG anime series and movies followed that logic, then Touga wouldn't have even bothered to save Inuyasha's life on the night of his birth. Better yet, Touga could've just left Inuyasha in that fire, but saved Izayoi. He wouldn't have even bothered to give InuYasha his name if he just figured that his son failed his "test of courage" for being in that fire that he surely would have perished in if Touga didn't get there in time.

Also, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Yashahime's director HIMSELF (who worked on the OG anime too) say that a certain pairing that I won't name was never depicted as romantic in the original anime series? We all know it wasn't in the manga, but a while back I swear I read an interview where the director said it was never depicted in the anime either. Clearly, Yashahime threw that out the window, too.

And finally, I don't think I have to mention the retconning of all if the OG cast's character developments that were CLEARLY SHOWN IN THE OG ANIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And that is why I don't think Trashahime can even be considered canon to the anime either. I rest my case.

Don’t worry about venting! I agree with what you said there, I would love to add more plotholes and inconsistencies that are in Yashahime to your list but... I get exhausted just thinking about it lmao

The Tessaiga retcon is especially bad. First, like you said both in the anime and manga it is said that Tessaiga was forged for Inuyasha’s mother, who in Sunrise-canon was born 200 years ago, but in Yashahime Toga had Tessaiga and was using a perfect meido zangetsuha 500 years ago to destroy the comet...

^^ He literally has Tenseiga on his hip even though Tenseiga was created to take Meido Zangetsuha out of Tessaiga lmao

You’re not wrong about the black pearl and Hosenki. Hosenki II says in chapter 298 that he and his father “cultivate” the pearls, it has nothing to do with tears, and Inuyasha’s father commissioned the black pearl before his death...

The rouge / lipstick is not even a different rouge, they imply in episode 15 that it’s the same one Inuyasha gave to Kikyo, but Riku somehow found it and gave it to Hosenki II for some reason.

That raises SO many questions... When did Riku find the pieces of the rouge? Was he spying on Kikyo and Inuyasha this whole time?? How did he know the rouge belonged to Izayoi?? Is he a time traveler?? Why did Riku and Hosenki II even work together to create the new black pearl?? Is this ever going to be addressed??

Oh man the interviews... I get a headache every time I read them. Personally, I don’t really think it’s ooc for Sesshomaru to set up some kind of rite or trial for his hanyo daughters to prove their strength. I never imagined him being soft and loving with them, especially not with the way he treated Inuyasha. But like you said, it’s definitely not a universal yokai thing, we all know that. Sesshomaru is just Like That lmao. I still don’t understand why his “rite” had to take 14+ years, why it involves Kirinmaru and Zero and what it has to do with Inuyasha, Kagome and Moroha...? If he wants to make his daughters go through that, that’s his business, there’s no need to also ruin Moroha’s childhood by letting her parents rot in the border to the after life when he could get them out whenever he wants (since he can go through the gate to the afterlife thanks to Tenseiga).

Other hilarious things that Sumisawa mentioned in the last interview: - Moroha knows Sesshomaru’s scent because he’s famous amongst demons - Everyone call the girls “yashahime” because Treekyo started the trend (no one was there to hear Treekyo except the girls...?) - Kirinmaru met Jesus Christ and Buddha at some point

And probably other stuff I’m forgetting... I’m so tired lol

This is the second part of my evidence for my illusion/unreality theory. I changed it to a Q&A format. There will be a few more parts. I know a lot of you were mostly interested in why the parents are playing the villians but I wanted to explain a few things first. It will be next.

You probably will want to read the first part before continuing:

I decided "unreality" is a better way of presenting the situation so I will use that for now on.

What is meant by "unreality"?

Possibly pure illusion or a dream. Or something like the Matrix. A shared reality only existing in the minds connected to it.

Maybe the girls are actually in "reality" and it's simply a case of some of the other characters being illusioned to look different.

Or maybe a combination. As I said in the first part, Sunrise has hinted at the idea of miniature models with pictures and merchandise. Maybe they are in a minature world created by magic but one actually existing in the real world. Like in the Inuyasha episode with the corrupted sages and human faced fruit.

Why are the girls in an unreality?

In an interview, a Sunrise employee said "if you think it's a trial, then it's a trial." This fits with some general themes I have seen in Yashahime. I think Sesshomaru put his twins in the unreality to test them. The reason for the test I can only speculate about. At the moment, I think it's to prove themselves worthy of taking over as the Inu no Taisho, the position Treekyo said he abandoned.

Why is Moroha in there? Maybe she volunteered to provide support for the twins. Or as a descendant of Toga, maybe she is up for the Inu No Taisho position too.

What's happened in "reality"?

First, I think the story we are seeing in Yashahime is a reflection of what really occurred to the OG crew, including the perils and Rin's story. Think of it as if Yashahime is TV show loosely inspired by true events.

I think the girls were temporarily separated from their parents but never lost their memories of them. More on that later.

I think Kirinmaru really exists but was not a villian. I think he lost control of the real Perils and Sesshomaru, Inuyasha and the rest helped him defeat them. I think a clue to them not being the real Perils is in how they look a little different than what is shown in Myoga's explanation flashback. Those were the real Perils.

I think Rin was attacked/possessed by some kind of evil spirit/demon and possibly corrupted. In the unreality, I believe it will be a yukionna that is the culprit, it may be different in reality. I think she was put in stasis by Sesshomaru until she could be healed. Part of that healing included Sesshomaru sacrificing his sleep for her. I think a clue to that is in the "sleeping" merch where both Sesshomaru and Setsuna are awake. I think Rin was only in stasis for a short period of time.

At the moment, I think Kagura is the mom. I go back and forth as to whether her existence in reality is due to a changed timeline or resurrection. If a timeline change, this reality could be reflected in the unreality by the presence of demons who died in Inuyasha.

Rather than Towa being flung into the future because of a fire, I think she, Setsuna, Moroha and Takechiyo (who I think is InuKag's son) were sent to the Higurashis on purpose via the rainbow corridor while the parents fought the perils. A hint may be in the dream sequence where InuKag is at a shrine courtyard sending Moroha away.

Relatedly, in promotional material, Sunrise hounded on the fact that the girls would be traveling between the present and past but that hasn't really occurred. They also go on about how all three girls are of both eras. I think they are, in reality. In my Reiwa theory I suggest the modern era has become a peaceful time when demons and humans live openly together in peace. I think both sesskagu and InuKag families actually moved to the present because of that but often visit their friends in the past. Besides Sunrise's statements, there's also Setsuna's violin skills, and she seemed to know what a kilo was. Relatedly, Moroha knew what to get when doing modern day shopping and had apparent ease in doing so. I think their memories have been suppressed for the unreality but they still have residual knowledge. Also, Moroha wondered if she was weak because she went through the rainbow corridor, suggesting she had been through it before. I also think the Higurashi's lackluster reaction to Moroha was a hint. They weren't excited because they were already reunited with her. It's also been pointed out by others that a girl in Towa's class looks remarkably like Moroha.

How is reality being reflected in the unreality?

Besides some of the above, in general, I think Yashahime is using parallels and metaphors in the unreality to tell the viewers what happened to the happened to the old crew in reality, including the story of the twins's parents. Some of which we know but a lot that we don't. We will learn the new information through the battles and also through the stories of the side characters they meet.

I think the fact that so many of villians are based on Inuyasha villians may serve multiple purposes. One is a hint to express that just the battles with the old villians are altered copies from reality, so are the ones with the Perils and other new villians. Another could be to express the idea that there was a timeline change and it caused demons to live that should be dead. If so, it could be leading up to showing through a parallel how Kagura is alive.

One specific example of how they used a parallel to provide new information could be the drifting pond episode. I think the lake being pure, then corrupted, then made pure again via medicinal herbs is a reflection of Rin was ultimately healed.

Toga Family Head-Cannons

The Toga family has three children; Himiko Toga (oldest), Karina Toga (middle), and Muroma Toga (youngest).

Akiyama and Mizume are the parents to the Toga kids. Akiyama Toga is their father and Mizume Toga is their mother.

Akiyama is quirkless while Mizume has a healing quirk where she can mend broken bones.

Muroma developed a form of his mothers quirk where he can heal open wounds. Both Himiko and Karina got their quirks from their fathers side because their grandmother (Akiyama’s mother), had a transforming quirk. However, Himiko’s quirk is the only one in the family that has ever required blood in order to transform.

Akiyama is a very successful architect and is highly requested around the world, but mostly Japan, when new buildings are being built. He also designed Karina and Jiro’s Hero Agency and paid to have it built, despite Karina and Jiro both insisting to help pay for it.

Mizume is a nurse in the Hosu General Hospital. If there are ever any live victims of Himiko’s, Mizume always puts them at the top of her list and does her best to help them to make up for what her daughter did to them. Unfortunately though, most of Himiko’s victims don’t even make it to the hospital.

After the incident when Himiko finally ‘snapped’ in middle school and attacked someone, the Toga family was put in a bad standing with the public at large. The parents were blamed for ‘bad parenting’ and the siblings couldn’t be trusted to not also ‘snap’. Akiyama’s work suffered for a short while, but due to his talent and high demand, it didn’t suffer for long. However, Mizume wasn’t allowed to help patients for a while and was moved to a check-in desk at the hospital. It took over a year before she was allowed to help patients again. They seemed to ‘clear’ themselves when interviewed after Himiko was publicly associated with the LOV and they got the chance to publicly apologize for her behavior and cut all ties with her.

In the ‘current’ storyline (aka Pro Hero Dobu), Akiyama is 47, Mizume is 45, Muroma is 15, Karina is 21, and Himiko is 22.

Also in the ‘current’ storyline, Akiyama is 6′5, Mizume is 5′5, Muroma is 6′0, Karina is 5′8, and Himiko is 5′4. Karina absolutely hates that her 15 year old younger brother is so much taller than her and he teases her about it all the time.

While Karina and Muroma have a mix of their parents looks, Himiko looks exactly like her father while being just a little shorter than her mother. This is what Akiyama and Mizume look like.

Outside of the League of Villains, Himiko doesn’t care about anyone except Karina and Muroma. Her siblings never labeled her as a freak or unnatural, or tried to force her to change unlike their parents. Muroma was too young to know what was going on and Karina was her best friend. Karina always supported her older sister and tried to help her whenever she could, especially after their parents told Himiko to suppress her quirk and hide it from everyone.

The League of Villains does not know about Himiko’s siblings, therefore they don’t know that Pro Hero Dobu is her sister. Himiko does her best to hide this from the League and tries to avoid fighting Karina if she can. However, if she has to fight Karina, she doesn’t hold back, and neither does Karina.

R.I.P. Saitou.

Toga’s family’s got it rough too. Their house looks vandalized, probably because of this incident.

They weren’t very supportive of their daughter’s true self and discouraged her from showing any behavior considered ‘not normal’ in society. So to be able to truly live as herself is also the reason why she’s with the League.

Again, what’s being defined as normal is to fit into the masses, act like everyone else. “Normal” is determined by the current society to make sure the majority belongs. Sucks about the minority who cannot conform to what is “normal”.

Which I’ll skip ahead to this panel:

Toga normally doesn’t want to kill whoever she’s ordered to kill like a subordinate. But she states she can’t help it, because she knows Tomura has her interests at heart (also shown it a few chapters ago where he made an exception for her in his ‘destroy everything’ plan). Every League of Villain backstory we heard so far had to do with the fact that the current system failed them, and that is why they have this common goal to destroy it.

(Edit: The Mangastream translation the ‘Big Guy’ means Gigantomachia, and instead of referring to Tomura destroying what Toga doesn’t like, it’s 'I don’t have a choice, because we destroy whatever we don’t like’. Which holds very different meaning since in that translation Toga is using Shigaraki’s creed to justify her deeds rather than what I said in the paragraph above. Plus I’m pretty sure there’s no ‘no-kill rule’ just because Giganto is coming) TLDR: Mangastream translation for this page didn’t fit that well.

Because the League makes her feel good, because she’s living what she considers a ‘normal life’, Toga fights for the family that accepts her as she is.

Also a reminder that in the Overhaul arc Toga pulled a knife on Shigaraki when he wanted her to do something she didn’t like, but his reasoning (that he believes in her and Twice) won her over.

Back to the previous pages. I disagree with Chitose because she said that Toga’s history was tragic because she was oppressed and became like this (abnormal and insane), and her story will promote people to be more lenient with quirks.

However the reality was that Toga was always like this, and if she had her way freely to begin with then she would simply cause more murders. The situation should have been dealt with more delicacy by her parents, but letting her drain blood without restraint is not a positive thing to promote.

So even if Chitose had published Toga’s article, it would be picked apart by critics who would see this case as more of a reason to restrict quirk usage. Rather than swaying the hearts of a nation, she could not even understand her subject’s heart.

This really puts into perspective why she feels the need to drain blood. We kiss our loved ones all the time. Imagine a world where other people kiss each other normally, but when you are the one to do it, everyone looks at you in disgust.

Yeah, I’m understanding Toga more now.

It looks like Toga’s ability to use other people’s quirk is:

Insanely OP (Ujiko might even have some AFO blood around. Imagine Toga with AFO).

Makes her transformation wear off faster.

Is in fact not an evolution caused by fear of death (but is it still an evolution?)

Previously in the license exam arc, the fact that Ochako!Toga didn’t float was what gave her away with Deku. In conclusion this is a technique either developed right now or during their month-and-a-half training time. (Edit: Mangastream translation she seems confused at this development, so it seem like it’s a new thing).

She needs to know the quirk well to be able to use it (so no AFO Toga I guess... Until a prison break arc at least).

And R.I.P. Chitose and her group. You guys were nice but the constant yelling for an interview got old. I wished they were more fleshed out than this before they kicked the bucket.

BnHA Chapter 226: Oh Shit We’re Caught Up

Previously on BnHA: The still-captured Giran warned Re-Des that the League wasn’t going to give a shit about rescuing him, and reminded him that if the League sicced a Noumu on the Army they were as good as dead. But Re-Des was all “nah they don’t have any Noumus to sic at the moment” and give an annoyingly thorough summary of his deductive reasoning. Meanwhile in the town, Kizuki, a.k.a. the Rita Skeeter of BnHA, pestered Toga for an interview. She seemed to have done her research, too -- she knew Toga’s age, and that she ran away from home after graduating middle school. None of Toga’s friends or family saw it coming, apparently, and Kizuki -- whose quirk allows her to turn anything she touches into a bomb -- wanted to know the deal. She allowed Toga to suck up some of her subordinates’ blood, then promptly exploded it. She then asked Toga why she’d abandoned her normal life. In response, Toga smiled one of her crazy smiles and was all “a normal life? what’s that?” Lol okay. Anyway, the last few pages were peppered with as-yet-unexplained flashback scenes, so I’m guessing we’re about to find out just what makes this girl tick at long last.

Today on BnHA: We explore Toga’s backstory in a series of flashbacks. Basically her quirk gave her a fascination for blood which her quirk counseling never properly addressed, and so one day she just snapped and killed a dude. But she was such a cute little kid though. Whatever Toga I still love you. Anyway, so back in the present, Kizuki tries to psychoanalyze Toga and makes her out to be a victim of a society that doesn’t have a place for her. Kizuki says that Toga will become a martyr for the Liberation Army’s cause. But Toga is all “fuck that” and breaks free of Kizuki’s clutches, transforming into Ochako using the last of the blood she took back during the forest arc. Kizuki mocks the seemingly useless transformation, stating that she knows Toga can only change her appearance on the outside. Unfortunately for Kizuki, this isn’t entirely the case, as it’s revealed that while transformed, Toga is able to use the quirks of whoever she turns into. She proceeds to float Kizuki way up into the air and then release her, splattering her onto the ground. Like, she’s definitely dead now, oh shit. Anyways so it’s pretty awesome, albeit grisly as all heck. Now to wait for the rest of the League to follow suit and kick some Liberation Army ass.

Mostly Evil is Slightly Good! whereas with All Evil, well, with All Evil there’s usually only one thing you can do. (accuse them of being the protagonist’s Secret Dad.)

I mean, I would imagine one of the goals of the program would be to embrace the fact that you’re different. that’s hardly an isolating thing in a society like this one where everyone is so unique that the established word for their superpowers literally means “individuality”

(ETA: on a reread, it actually sounds like the program is intended to do just the opposite of that and the goal is to get everyone to fit in. how the hell they expect to accomplish that in a society where everyone has wacky abilities is beyond me! no wonder the program has issues if this really is the case though.)

?? and why the hell not, though? sure it might freak some people out that she likes her steaks a little rarer than most, but I don’t see why they couldn’t have accommodated this the same as any other quirk. people donate blood all the time; couldn’t she have gotten a legal supply for her own medical needs? the live animals and such are a bit weird, true, but again, it’s not all that different from what your cat would get up to given half the chance. I feel like they could have found other outlets for her to channel some of that bloodlust, while helping to sate any physical cravings with the aforementioned donated blood supply. if you ask me, whoever counseled her dropped the ball honestly

(ETA: and her parents, too. this makes me want to rewatch the first season of Dexter actually. too bad Toga’s parents weren’t like Dexter’s dad.)

I honestly can’t decide if I’m glad we got more insight into Toga’s headspace, or annoyed that they went and gave her Secret Angst. the problem is I don’t think she needed Secret Angst in order to be a good character, or a likable one. I’m not so sure I really like the implication here that It’s Not Toga’s Fault, Because Society Failed Her. like, I’ve talked about my feelings on this kind of thing before. I prefer It Is Her Fault But She Owns It Though. just because I like when characters take responsibility for their own shit and it’s not just excused or handwaved

but on the other hand, Toga is the type of character who doesn’t need redemption so much as rehabilitation. so it is good to get some kind of an idea as to why she went off the rocker, in that respect. idk. I have mixed feelings, maybe by the time I post this recap I’ll have sorted it out more in my head lol

(ETA: yeah so after reflecting on it some more, it’s more like she was always the way she is, and was just repressing it, and then one day got tired of repressing it. being told she should act one way when she felt like her true self was someone totally different. so it’s not really “society fucked her up” so much as “she was already a little kooky and they just failed to properly address it until it was too late.” so that’s fine, I guess. it’s about what I expected. and hey, at least we got some cute Baby Toga scenes out of the bargain, so.)

oh my god. okay so someone sent me an anon ask early Thursday afternoon (ETA: this was last Thursday April 25; I read the chapter on the 26th) to the effect of “the mystery has been solved; she CAN use quirks”, so I’m getting an inkling that we’re about to see Toga do some zero gravity bullshit and I’m here for it. but unfortunately I’m spoiled for it. please give me time to read the new chapters when they come out, guys. since I’m writing down my reactions, I’m not able to just read the manga on my phone as soon as chapters come out; the whole process takes me a good hour or two usually, and I prefer to read on my computer since the keyboard comes in handy when I’m typing out a novel in response to whatever bullshit is happening lol. so with work and everything, that usually means I don’t get around to it until the late afternoon/evening most of the time

anyways I know I probably sound bitchy but it’s not really a big deal. but I just wanted to bring this up now, because if and when Horikoshi finally reveals Kacchan’s hero name 17 years from now and I get spoiled on that before I read it, that’ll be a different story lol. I will rampage, guys. or more likely I’ll just learn to turn my asks off on Thursdays and Fridays until the chapter is read! anyways!

lastly, “cute is evil” makes absolutely no sense, but damned if I’m not 100% on board with that slogan. just something about it that I like. or maybe it’s just due to the context here, lol. whatever it is, I’d buy a coffee mug with that printed on it

and here we go. so that’s it for new chapters until May 10th or thereabouts. if only there was something coming out in the interim that could tide my superhero cravings over. like a new Avengers movie or some shit. lol

I watched this years SDCC panel. I learned nothing new about s14.

Let’s jump into it; this are just going to be my opinions on the panel btw, I’ll do a separate post about some of the sdcc interviews later once I get the chance to watch them. So if there’s anything “big” that was discussed at the panel but is not mentioned here (ie. Sam’s leadership role) it’s most likely cause I already know it was discussed with more info in an interview.

Before the panel there was a teaser clip of s14 that I have not come across, if you know where I can see it let me know, and there was also a montage before the panel and that I did see.

It was actually pretty well done, they managed to make s13 look good...with the exception of the Dean/Lucifer fight scene but there’s no saving that scene. The song they used is beautiful, I loved it.

And I really liked the...I have no idea what exactly it’s called I guess it can be considered a poster that they showed at the end, I find it pretty, and I love how Sam looks in it with the scruff:

The panel itself, just like last year barely had any information relevant to the upcoming season. I will be fair and say if you don’t watch regular j2 con panels and follow the fandom then perhaps the little information given will be new for you but for someone like me, who does watch the regular con panels and follows along, the information given is not anything I didn’t already know.

I believe I had commented this before, but I was really hoping that SDCC would give me some sort of information of s14 that would make me excited and look forward to it, and I still have to check out the interviews so maybe I’ll find something there, but this panel did the opposite, I want to watch s14 even less. Dabb, Singer and BuckLemming sound like they have no clue where they’re going this season; I actually still don’t know why BuckLemming were at the panel when they contributed so little, and Dabb even looked as if he didn’t want to be there, which I completely understand because I didn’t want him there either.

Speaking off, I hate the way Dabb and BuckLemming answer questions, they answer without answering in the most annoying way.

Like near the beginning of the panel Dabb was asked what it’s like crafting the show, balancing what Dean is as a character vs. what he becomes possessed by Michael and his answer is: “I think when he was possessed by Michael he is Michael. Dean is there and he’s aware of what’s going on but he’s not really coming to the fore so Dean’s Michael”

That to me is not an answer to the question he was given, and it’s a repeat of what Jensen said as an answer to a previous question: that Dean is riding shotgun, Michael’s driving the car.

(I did like Richards follow up question, and I feel like he pointed something out Dabb might not have realized: “But in terms of the rhythm and like the word choices when you guys are working with the writers and developing that character there’s obviously- Michael’s gonna have a different entire pattern of speech and word choice than Dean I would assume; so that goes into a struggle does any of Dean ever seep out? is there ever a mix of the two in this creation?”)

BuckLemming [and Dabb-Singer] were asked: what’s michael’s plan? what’s his agenda?

Buckner tried to pass the question on to Lemming then Lemming passed the question back on to Buckner and I’m gonna rough summarize his reply and leave a timestamp if you want to listen to the whole thing cause he gave a long-ish answer and I am not going to listen to it 20x just to transcript it:

That Michael’s agenda was in a long list of do not reveals. That we saw what he did to his world and that he’s curious as to what humans want and that we’re going to see him recruiting people for his team and that it’s going to unfold very quickly in the first few episodes. TIMESTAMP

You really gotta listen to it to understand why I say this man sounds as if he has no clue what Michael’s agenda is; and I’m calling bs on that being on a ‘do not reveal’ list cause these questions are pre-approved. And he pretty much revealed what Michael’s plan was going to be anyways: Apocalypse!world 2.0.

The panel was asked about the longevity of the show: about what they think it is that makes the recipe still work, still stay fresh (they’re re-doing a storyline from s5, oh yeah they’re real “fresh”), and still engaging fans.

Lemming’s answer:

“we bring everybody to the brink of something, we push all our characters to where they think they can’t go any further and somehow on the other side of that they are redeemed. i think there’s a lot about redemption and loyalty. Whenever you see loyalty you see betrayal, so this are sort of time honored themes that we play with in the bodies of real likable and available characters that everybody loves.”

Lady what the fuck are you talking about? Since when is this show about redemption? If anything the whole betrayal schtick is one of the most tiring things of this show, also ‘whenever you see loyalty you see betrayal’ what kind of bs...

And ‘likable and available characters that everybody loves’? I can think of a good number of characters from this show that I don’t love.

On a more positive note cause I don’t hate everybody’s ways of answering questions, y’all already know I absolutely love the way j2 do it and yes j2 were wonderful but I actually want to talk about, Alex! I am liking this kid more and more, and I really liked the answer he gave when asked about how his characters relationship with Sam and Dean will change now that Castiel will (supposedly) be taking on a more parental role in the absence of Dean:

“Well what’s really cool about this show is you know I guess kinda like Scooby-Doo is you can break up the relationships and you guys can kinda like have different people go on a journey so you know investigate this part of the...you know the mansion- I don’t know. But for me and Cas it’s very cool that we get to have this kinda sustained celestial bond, but I think the ultimate thing is getting Dean back, that’s I think everyone’s kinda drive and motivation we wanna get him back into the fold.”

That is such a professional way to say Jack wants his other dad back 😂

But really I did like how he answered the question and I like the way the question was worded too:

“Your relationship with Sam and Dean last year was very much-they were very much paternal figures to you since you sorta come into the world. Castiel seems to be falling into that role a little bit as the season begins here, especially in the absence of Dean so where do you see your relationship going with Sam and Dean now? How does the Cas parental role change your relationship with Sam and eventually Dean?”

There was talk of the 300th episode, Singer is set to direct it, Jared said Jensen wants the 300th episode to feature the boys in togas, which would be a hell of fun to see but that’s all the info that was given. It seems Dabb is going to be the one writing it, which god help us; I will say I was not amused by Singer saying Dabb has a plan but he hasn’t told him what it is yet cause I don’t trust that man and I already think there’s a severe communication problem in that writing room.

Dabb has got to let WS go. You tried, you failed, let it go!

Overall, I found the panel boring and kinda forgettable, it wasn’t even funny like last years was; if you’re looking for s14 information, you can find it summarized online and there’s more info in the interviews. I don’t think you’re gonna lose much if you skip on this panel, but I also don’t think you’re gonna lose much if you do watch it.

Regarding the history of Geiser's Potato Chips, the following is an excerpt from Frank X. Geiser's Obituary,

Milwaukee Journal

, March 13, 1990.

Born in Germany Frank [X. Geiser] and his brother August, moved to Milwaukee in 1925 to pursue the tailoring trade they had learned in Germany, according to Frank Geiser's daughter, Margaret Taylor. When the brothers saw a news item about potato chips, they decided making chips could become a good business. August Geiser designed their first potato fryer, and the brothers opened their business in January 1933 in a garage on N. 2nd and W. Wright Sts. A postcard from Geiser immigrated to Milwaukee and in 1931 and set up a potato chip business in a garage on Wright and 2nd Street in Milwaukee.

A postcard from Yellowstone Park, sent by a friend, prompted the brothers to use an erupting geyser as the trademark on their potato chip bags, Taylor said. The brothers wanted to be sure people pronounced their name correctly as geyser not geezer, Taylor said.

"Dad's old books show that their sales brought in $1.98 that first week," Taylor said. The brothers did everything by hand, from peeling the potatoes to bagging them. taylor was often kidded by salesmen who remembered that when she was a baby, she slept on potato sacks while her mother helped make potato chips.

The business eventually grew large enough to move a few blocks away on N. 3rd St. In 1946, the firm moved its manufacturing plant at 3033 W. Burleigh Ave., where [Frank] Geiser continued as chairman of the board until the firm was sold in 1983 to Borden's.

The plant now is used only as a warehouse outlet, and Geiser potato chips are made in Chicago.

"It's a heartbreak when you see [a family business close], Taylor said. "My dad was always concerned about quality. There were times when no money was coming in. But he always said he'd rather do that than put a lousy product on the market."

Frank was interviewed by the Milwaukee Jornal in August 1959. Regarding the start of his company he said "When prohibition ended, people wanted something to eat with their beer. We sold our chips first in taverns and then in stores and delicatessens."

At the 3113 W. Burleigh Street plant, in addition to potato chips, Geiser's produced popcorn, cheese corn and onion and garlic chips. Two reasons were cited for the 1983 sale to Borden's Food: 1) The company knew that if it was to be successful outside of Wisconsin - it had been trying to expand into northern Illinois - it needed the marketing savvy that only a larger company could provide; and 2) In hopes that Borden would help it make better use of its Milwaukee plant, producing some of Borden's own brands there. In 1980, prior to its sale to Borden, Geiser's completed a $2.5 million expansion project, which doubled its production capabilities.

The [Geiser's potato chip] brand was a stalwart in the Milwaukee area with its "Be Wiser, Buy Geiser's" slogan and cartoon icons (Old Faithful the geyser and a bear carelessly hanging onto balloons). For a time, Geiser also sponsored a formidable junior bowling team. A 1948 Journal Sentinel article mentions the Geiser team finishing sixth in the Wisconsin Bowling Association tournament.

In 1984, the Borden food company bought Geiser's. The parent of Elsie the Cow gobbled up several regional chip brands around this time, including Pennsylvania's Wise (in fact, Wise Cheese Doodles were available locally in the early 1990s). In the early '90s, Borden stopped snacking on chip companies. Geiser's was bought by the Japp family, owner of Jay's potato chips. The Geiser's factory on West Burleigh street dwindled down production soon after, and the brand slowly went away. All that remains are some collector's items featuring the bear and the geyser.

An April 24, 1959 article from the

Milwaukee Journal

included the following interesting item: A Geiser's route salesman was arrested for stealing $2.500 worth of potato chips.

Police said [Robert W.] Hakenson told them he had taken six to sixteen cases each week during the last year. Hakenson said that he entered the plant after it was closed by using a hacksaw blade to unbolt a door, police said.

After stealing the chips, Hakenson sold them to customers on his route and pocketed the money, he told police. He worked for the company for five years.

Hakenson doesn't seem to have been the brightest thief. It reminds me of the old story about a plant employee who each day at the end of his shift leaves the plant with a wheelbarrow full of garbage. Parenting: Are We Getting a Raw Deal?

Summer 1974. I’m 9 years old. By 7:30 am, I’m up and out of the house, or if it’s Saturday I’m up and doing exactly what my father, Big Jerry, has told me to do. Might be raking, mowing, digging holes, or washing cars. Summer 2016. I’m tiptoeing out of the house, on my way to work, in an effort not to wake my children who will undoubtedly sleep until 11 am. They may complete a couple of the chores I’ve left in a list on the kitchen counter for them, or they may eat stale Cheez-its that were left in their rooms 3 days ago, in order to avoid the kitchen at all costs and “not see” the list. If you haven’t noticed, we’re getting a raw deal where this parenting gig is concerned. When did adults start caring whether or not their kids were safe, happy, or popular? I can assure you that Ginny and Big Jerry were not whiling away the hours wondering if my brother and I were fulfilled. Big Jerry was stoking the fires of his retirement savings and working, and working some more. Ginny was double bolting the door in order to keep us out of the house, and talking on the phone while she smoked a Kent. Meanwhile, we were three neighborhoods away, playing with some kids we’d never met, and we had crossed 2 major highways on bicycles with semi-flat tires to get there. Odds are, one of us had crashed at some point and was bleeding pretty impressively. No one cared. We were kids and if we weren’t acting as free labor, we were supposed to be out of the house and out of the way. My personal belief is that the same “woman with too little to do”, that decided it was necessary to give 4- year old guests a gift for coming to a birthday party, is the same loon who decided we were here to serve our kids and not the other way around. Think about it. As a kid, what was your costume for Halloween? If you were really lucky, your mom jabbed a pair of scissors in an old sheet, cut two eye holes, and you were a ghost. If her friend was coming over to frost her hair and showed up early, you got one eye hole cut and spent the next 45 minutes using a sharp stick to jab a second hole that was about two inches lower than its partner. I watched my cousin run directly into a parked car due to this very costume one year. He was still yelling, “Trick or Treat” as he slid down the rear quarter panel of a Buick, mildly concussed. When my son was 3 years old, we had a clown costume made by a seamstress, complete with pointy clown hat, and grease makeup. His grandmother spent more having that costume made than she did on my prom dress. At some point in the last 25 years, the tide shifted and the parents started getting the marginal cars and the cheap clothes while the kids live like rock stars. We spend enormous amounts of money on private instruction, the best sports gear money can buy, and adhere to psycho competition schedules. I’m as guilty as anyone. I’ve bought the $300 baseball bats with money that should have been invested in a retirement account, traveled from many an AAU basketball game, or travel baseball game, to a dance competition in the course of one day, and failed to even consider why. Remember Hank Aaron? He didn’t need a $300 bat to be great. Your kid isn’t going pro and neither is mine, but you are going to retire one day and dumpster diving isn’t for the elderly. My brother and I still laugh about how, when he played high school baseball, there was one good bat and the entire team used it. Remember your clothes in the 70’s? Despite my best efforts to block it out, I can still remember my desperate need to have a pair of authentic Converse shoes. Did I get them? Negative. Oh, was it a punch in the gut when my mother presented me with the Archdale knock-offs she found somewhere between my hometown and Greensboro. Trust me. They weren’t even close. Did I complain? Hell, no. I’m still alive, aren’t I? We’ve got an entire generation of kids spitting up on outfits that cost more than my monthly electric bill. There were no designer baby clothes when we were kids. Why? Because our parents weren’t crazy enough to spend $60 on an outfit for us to have explosive diarrhea in or vomit on. Our parents were focused on saving for their retirement and paying their house off. The real beauty of it is that none of these kids are going to score a job straight out of college that will allow them to pay for the necessities of life, brand new cars, and $150 jeans, so guess who’s going to be getting the phone call when they can’t make rent? Yep, we are. Think back; way, way back. Who cleaned the house and did the yard work when you were a kid? You did. In fact, that’s why some people had children. We were free labor. My mother served as supervisor for the indoor chores, and the house damn well better be spotless when my father came through the door at 5:35. The battle cry went something like this, “Oh, no! Your father will be home in 15 minutes! Get those toys put away nooooow!” The rest of our evening was spent getting up to turn the television on demand, and only to what Dad wanted to watch. On weekends Dad was in charge of outdoor work and if you were thirsty you drank out of the hose, because 2 minutes of air conditioning and a glass of water from the faucet might make you soft. Who does the housework and yardwork now? The cleaning lady that comes on Thursday, and the landscaping crew that comes every other Tuesday. Most teenage boys have never touched a mower, and if you asked my daughter to clean a toilet, she would come back with a four page paper on the various kinds of deadly bacteria present on toilet seats. Everyone is too busy doing stuff to take care of the stuff they already have. But don’t get confused, they aren’t working or anything crazy like that. Juggling school assignments, extracurricular activities, and spending our money could become stressful if they had to work. I don’t recall anyone being worried about my workload being stressful, or my mental health in general. Jerry and Ginny had grownup stuff to worry about. As teenagers, we managed our own social lives and school affairs. If Karen, while executing a hair flip, told me my new Rave perm made me look like shit and there was no way Kevin would ever go out with my scrawny ass, my mother wasn’t even going to know about it; much less call Karen’s mother and arrange a meeting where we could iron out our misunderstanding and take a selfie together. Additionally, no phone calls were ever made to any of my teachers or coaches. Ever. If we sat the bench, we sat the bench. Our dads were at work anyway. They only knew what we told them. I can’t even conceive of my dad leaving work to come watch a ballgame. If I made a 92.999 and got a B, I got a B. No thinly veiled threats were made and no money changed hands to get me that A. Ok, full disclosure, in my case we would be looking at an 84.9999. I was the poster child for underachievement. Back in our day, high school was a testing ground for life. We were learning to be adults under the semi-vigilant supervision of our parents. We had jobs because we wanted cars, and we wanted to be able to put gas in our cars, and wear Jordache jeans and Candies. Without jobs, we had Archdale sneakers and Wranglers, and borrowed our mother’s Chevrolet Caprice, affectionately known as the “land yacht”, on Friday night. No one, I mean, no one, got a new car. I was considered fairly lucky because my parents bought me a car at all. I use the term “car” loosely. If I tell you it was a red convertible and stop right here, you might think me special. I wasn’t. My car was a red MG Midget, possibly a ’74 and certainly a death trap. Look at your coffee table. Now imagine it having a steering wheel and driving it. I promise you, it’s bigger than my car was. The starter was bad, so after school I had the pleasure of popping the hood and using two screwdrivers to cross the solenoids or waiting for the football players to come out of the dressing room headed to practice. Those guys pushing my car while I popped the clutch, is a memory no 16-year old girl around here will ever have, and it’s a great one. Had I driven that car in high winds, it’s likely I would have ended up airborne, and there were probably some serious safety infractions committed the night I took 6 people in togas to a convenience store, but I wouldn’t go back and trade it out for a new 280Z, even if I had the chance. I was a challenging teenager, and in retrospect the fact that it was pretty impressive every time I made it home alive, may not have been an accident on the part of my parents. Go to the high school now. These kids are driving cars that grown men working 55 hours a week can’t afford, and they aren’t paying for them with their jobs. And those new cars don’t do a thing for telling a good story. I tell my kids all the time, the very best stories from my teen and college years involve Ann’s yellow Plymouth Duster with the “swirling dust” graphic, Randy’s Valiant with the broken gas gauge, and Carla’s burgundy Nissan that may or may not have had a complete floorboard. A story that starts, “Remember that time we were heading to the beach in Carla’s Nissan and your wallet fell through the floorboard onto the highway?” is so much more interesting than, “Remember that time we were going to the beach in your brand new SUV, filled up with gas that your parents paid for, and the…well, no, never mind. Nothing happened. We just drove down there.” To top it all off, most of them head off to college without a clue what it’s like to look for a job, apply for it, interview, and show up on time, as scheduled. If they have a job, it’s because someone owed their dad a favor…and then they work when it “fits their schedule”. We all love our kids, and we want to see them happy and fulfilled, but I fear we’re robbing them of the experiences that make life memorable and make them capable, responsible, confident adults. For the majority of us, the very nice things we had as teenagers, we purchased with money we earned after saving for some ungodly amount of time. Our children are given most everything, and sometimes I wonder whether it’s for them or to make us feel like good parents. The bottom line is that you never value something you were given, as much as something you worked for. There were lessons in our experiences, even though we didn’t know it at the time. All those high school cat fights, and battles with teachers we clashed with, were an opportunity for us to learn how to negotiate and how to compromise. It also taught us that the world isn’t fair. Sometimes people just don’t like you, and sometimes you’ll work your ass off and still get screwed. We left high school, problem solvers. I’m afraid our kids are leaving high school with mommy and daddy on speed dial. We just don’t have the cojones our parents had. We aren’t prepared to tell our kids that they won’t have it if they don’t work for it, because we can’t bear to see them go without and we can’t bear to see them fail. We’ve given them a whole lot of stuff; stuff that will break down, wear out, get lost, go out of style, and lose value. As parents, I suppose some of us feel pretty proud about how we’ve contributed in a material way to our kid’s popularity and paved an easy street for them. I don’t, and I know there are many of you that are just as frustrated by it as I am. I worry about what we’ve robbed them of, which I’ve listed below, in the process of giving them everything. Delayed gratification is a really good thing. It teaches you perseverance and how to determine the true value of something. Our kids don’t know a damn thing about delayed gratification. To them, delayed gratification is waiting for their phone to charge.Problem-solving skills and the ability to manage emotion are crucial life skills. Kids now have every problem solved for them. Good luck calling their college professor to argue about how they should have another shot at that final because they had two other finals to study for and were stressed. Don’t laugh, parents have tried it.Independence allows you to discover who you really are, instead of being what someone else expects you to be. It was something I craved. These kids have traded independence for new cars and Citizen jeans. They will live under someone’s thumb forever, if it means cool stuff. I would have lived in borderline condemned housing, and survived off of crackers and popsicles to maintain my independence. Oh wait, I actually did that. It pisses me off. You’re supposed to WANT to grow up and forge your way in the world; not live on someone else’s dime, under someone else’s rule, and too often these days, under someone else’s roof.Common sense is that little something extra that allows you to figure out which direction is north, how to put air in your tires, or the best route to take at a certain time of day to avoid traffic. You develop common sense by making mistakes and learning from them. It’s a skill best acquired in a setting where it’s safe to fail, and is only mastered by actually doing things for yourself. By micromanaging our kids all the time, we’re setting them up for a lifetime of cluelessness and ineptitude. At a certain age, that cluelessness becomes dangerous. I’ve seen women marry to avoid thinking for themselves, and for some it was the wisest course of action.Mental toughness is what allows a person to keep going despite everything going wrong. People with mental toughness are the ones who come out on top. They battle through job losses, difficult relationships, illness, and failure. It is a quality born from adversity. Adversity is a GOOD thing. It teaches you what you’re made of. It puts into practice the old saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. It’s life’s teacher. Our bubble-wrapped kids are so sheltered from adversity, I wonder how the mental health professionals will handle them all after the world chews them up and spits them out a few times. I know you are calling me names right now, and mentally listing all the reasons this doesn’t apply to you and your kid, but remember I’m including myself in this. My kids aren’t as bad as some, because I’m too poor and too lazy to indulge them beyond a certain point. And I’m certainly not saying that our parents did everything right. God knows all that second hand smoke I was exposed to, and those Sunday afternoon drives where Dad was drinking a Schlitz and I was standing on the front seat like a human projectile, were less than ideal; but I do think parents in the 70’s defined their roles in a way we never have.I worry that our kids are leaving home with more intellectual ability than we did, but without the life skills that will give them the success and independence that we’ve enjoyed. Four: Reyna

The Scent of a Liar

Last summer, when Reyna had escorted Percy Jackson to the principia, the Lares’ reaction had been unnerving. The household gods and ancestral ghosts of New Rome had slurred him as “Graecus” or Greek. They were still adjusting to the occasional presence of the Camp Half-Blood members, sometimes shouting more derogatory insults and threatening to empty their chamber pots on the visiting campers.

However, they’d never done this.

As Axel and his five walked towards the principia, the Lares were completely silent.

Similar to when Percy entered, the Lares would stop and stare. Some looked angry. Some looked scared. None threw an immediate insult. She only heard one speak. A young, purplish boy ghost whispered, “How did that monster get in?”

Their continued silence was unnerving and uncharacteristic.

Reyna was beginning to wonder if the information she got out of their interrogation would outweigh whatever threat these six could pose to New Rome. By the end of the conversation, she hoped to know if these six were stranded guests or if she should have let them drown in the Little Tiber.

Once Reyna sat in one of the two high-backed chairs in the principia and set her dagger on the table, she felt more at ease. Frank took a seat beside her, at rigid attention. They’d had several new recruits since he’d taken over the position as co-praetor and could comfortably run an interrogation on his own, but this was a little different than collecting stray Lupa pups.

Normally, new recruits would gawk at the polished marble floors, the velvet drapes cascading down from the mosaic of Romulus and Remus on the ceiling, and the enormous banners. She remembered how impressed she had been the first time she’d seen this room and later how she felt like the weight of New Rome had shifted onto her shoulders when she’d first sat as praetor.

Neither Axel nor Pax seemed surprised by the room as they entered. If anything, their glances were so direct, they appeared to have the layout memorized. As Axel stepped in, his head held high despite his prior humiliation and pain, his gaze darted to note the weapons in the room, the lack of guards, and—she was shocked he registered they weren’t statues—the metallic greyhounds at either side of her seat.

Pax still cowered behind his taller brother. Similarly, he seemed to know where everything was, but his panicked eyes were darting between all the exits.

Behind him, Piper’s cousin was having the reaction she was used to seeing. Calex’s wide grey eyes drifted around the room in awe. He and the tall Indian girl with a burgundy jacket were in better spirits than the rest of the group. The girl teased him over his excitement.

Both quieted down when Calex turned to the last two members of their group and asked, “Where’s Joey?”

The Korean girl looked straight forward, like he hadn’t addressed her. She wore all black, maybe for a stealth operation, like Reyna had seen on her weeks ago. Something that looked a suspicious amount like a dinner napkin was tied around her neck in place of a bandana. Out of all of them, she was the only one armed. A xiphos sword hung at her side, one thumb pressed delicately on the top of the pommel, like she feared the sword might unsheathe itself of its own volition.

Reyna assumed some of the others had stealth blades on them elsewhere. Although torn up, she noticed the younger Pax brother had a utility belt with darts, vials, pouches, and some sort of brass knuckles.

The last member of the group, the daughter of Apollo with strawberry blond hair, pressed her lips together at Calex’s question. Her eyes teared up, and she shook her head.

Calex’s face fell.

Reyna frowned. She knew how hard it was to say that a friend had died.

Argentum and Aurum, the greyhounds at either side of her chair, perked up. Aurum, her gold dog, growled at the new comers. Argentum sniffed furiously in their direction, looking confused.

Reyna rubbed Aurum’s head to calm him down. “Thank you, Dakota, Michael,” she said and waved her hand in dismissal.

Dakota squeezed the shoulder of the Indian girl one last time and handed her his flask of Kool-Aid. Then he and Michael Kahale departed.

Reyna nodded at Frank to begin. He cleared his throat, adjusted his purple toga—something he still wasn’t used to wearing—and said, “What happened?”

They had instinctively formed a shoulder to shoulder line in front of her and Frank as they walked in. Except the smaller Pax boy. He still cowered behind his older brother.

Axel stepped forward and told their story, though he started somewhere she didn’t expect. He said that he and Pax were descended from Mayan Mopan Royalty on their father’s side. That their father, Santiago Pax, discovered the Greek gods were real, and thought he could become a god by a combination of eating a Greek goddess’s heart, and sacrificing thousands of lives to himself in a ritual. Axel and his little brother, Ajax Pax—or the one who went simply by Pax—were gathering weapons to stop their father and got sidetracked on some Greek missions along the way.

During this, Santiago captured their group of seven, and dragged them back to Santiago’s temple to use Pax’s blood for one of the ceremonies. Apparently, two of the Pax boy’s half siblings—an Egyptian magician named Lapis and a Japanese monk named Hiro—drugged Merry and Calex so they couldn’t use their demigod powers.

Calex and Merry’s eyes widened at the news. Merry looked a little sick.

Frank frowned and muttered, “Mayan royalty? Egyptian magicians…”

Reyna sympathized with his confusion. Before the Greeks, she thought the Romans were the only godly children out there. Now, the modern mythological world was starting to feel a lot more crowded and a lot more dangerous.

During the entire conversation, Aurum growled softly. He didn’t react when Reyna touched his head to soothe him.

“What made Pax’s blood so important to the ritual?” Frank finally asked.

Each time the word “ritual” was mentioned, Pax shrank more behind his brother.

Axel frowned. “His mother is a Greek goddess. Santiago thought his blood would be more powerful. He wanted Ajax and… and another demigod’s blood. He cut open Ajax’s tongue for blood and took the life of one of our friends, Joey Song.”

As Axel said it, his eyes unfocused. Reyna remembered the helplessness and guilt she’d sensed in him before and thought about the muzzle and bindings he’d worn when he arrived. He likely had sat there and watched, incapable of doing anything.

Euna, stared blankly at the back wall. She must have been in shock. From what Reyna was gathering, Joey Song was this girl’s little sister.

Merry hugged herself. Calex made a choking sound, his jaw dropping in disbelief. “What?” He glanced over at Euna, who continued to ignore him.

“I’m sorry for your loss,” Reyna said. She thought about the soldiers she couldn’t save during the Second Titan War and repressed a shudder. She still remembered the stories of the Triple A Chimera that would stalk into their camp at night, how people would mysteriously die in their sleep. She remembered her Cohort being torn to pieces when they were flanked by the children of Hecate, lead by a disgusting monster that combined skeletal features with a lion’s head—called the Leonis Caput by her troops, since they’d never seen it in their mythology before.

Although she knew they were grieving, Reyna needed to hear the rest of this story. She pushed away the memory of screams and forced herself not to touch the scar across her thigh, where the Leonis Caput had stabbed her.

She focused back on Axel and his little brother. “Your mother is a Greek goddess? Which one?”

Pax peeked over Axel’s good shoulder, his black and hazel eyes rimmed red from crying. “She never did that official glowy-claimy-thing,” he said, his voice much lighter than his demeanor. “But you know how it is with gods. One decade they’re having an affair with a crazed Mayan prince, the next they’re smiting a town because a cashier gave them Pepsi instead of Coke. I’m sure it’s on her to-do list.”

Plenty of demigods didn’t know their godly parent’s identity, but this situation felt different. “Your father never told you?” she asked.

Pax laughed nervously. “He is… he was a really busy guy too. Going to go out on a limb here, but he wasn’t much for laying around.” At the word “laying,” Pax released a hysterical giggle-sob.

Aurum growled again.

Pax ducked behind his brother’s back.

Reyna would need to question that further. She got the feeling it might be better to do one-on-one interviews with all of them after this. She picked her dagger off the table and twirled the tip on the edge of her armrest in thought. “I know this is hard, but we need to know what happened after.”

Axel glared at ground and swallowed. “I don’t remember.”

Kally, the small strawberry blonde, took a step forward. She trembled and choked on her words at first, looking nervous. After a moment, she collected herself and said, “Axel had been shot several hours prior to our fight with Santiago. He lost a lot of blood.”

Reyna understood the message: he’d passed out.

“That’s the second boss fight you’ve missed,” Pax whispered. [1]

Axel sighed. “Shut up, Ajax.”

Kally started to lift a hand to her mouth, but stopped and slowly lowered it. She took a deep breath and managed to make eye contact with Reyna and Frank, though barely. “Afterwards, Euna fought Santiago Pax and—um—”

Kally’s green eyes had drifted to Axel, as though to look for affirmation about what she could or couldn’t say, only to remember Axel didn’t remember the event.

Pax almost fell reaching a hand out to her. “Wait! Kally, that sounds an awful lot like one of Mr. Pax’s secrets,” he babbled. The formal way he referred to his father felt uncomfortable. He gave an apologetic shrug to Reyna and Frank. “Mr. Pax tricked Kally into swearing on the River Styx to keep his secrets and I don’t really want her all cursed and bot fly-ridden.”

Kally stared at Pax like he’d smacked her.

Frank frowned. “We can’t expect you to curse yourself on an oath you swore to their dad. Does anyone else remember?”

Merry and Calex both looked stunned. They were still digesting the death of their party member. Euna kept her eyes on the back wall, thumb pressed firmly to the top of her sword. Reyna wondered how long it would be before she would speak.

Pax swallowed. “Euna…” Pax’s voice cracked. “Euna felled him with her blade, all vengeful hero-like. But it gets fuzzy after Phobetor—you know that fun God of Nightmares—showed up. There was a dramatic, evil monologue and then we woke with bags over our heads and our hands tied in some wooden box—”

“You were in a Trojan Mario,” Frank supplied.

Pax stopped sniffling for a moment. His eyes went wide. “A what?”

“Like the Nintendo character.”

For a split second, Pax’s face lit up. He glanced around the throne room, like he expected the giant wooden statue to be hidden in a corner. It reaffirmed Reyna’s original assessment of him: he was definitely an idiot.

Pax hung his head when he registered the Trojan Mario had sunk in the Little Tiber. “Oh poor Italian plumber…” he sighed to himself. “Designed by the Japanese, built by the Greeks, and destroyed in New Rome… I feel your identity conflict.”

Kally looked ready to judo flip him into a wall. “Wait!” she cried, then blushed horribly. Again, her hand almost went to her lips. She hesitated, balled her fist, and continued, “We need to warn Chiron that Camp Half-Blood might be in danger. I think… I think Santiago was in league with several gods and they’re planning to attack Camp Half-Blood. We need to get back to camp as soon as we can.”

Frank glanced over to Reyna. During these interrogations, she’d learn that Frank tended to be too trusting, but, unlike previous times, he frowned at her in a something doesn’t add up way.

Reyna sighed and sheathed her knife. Someone was lying. If nothing else, Aurum hadn’t stopped growling since they’d come in. They couldn’t send them to Camp Half-Blood until they had a better idea of what was going on.

“You’re in no condition to travel,” Reyna said. They weren’t. Most of them looked like they were barely standing and the Little Tiber had banged them up pretty bad. “You’ll be detained here until you’ve had some food, rest, and been seen by a healer. We have phones and coins for Iris Messaging so you can get in immediate contact.”

“Reyna…” Frank muttered.

Reyna nodded. “We’ve been having trouble getting in contact with Camp Half-Blood, but we’ll get you in contact with them as soon as possible.”

“Food sounds good,” the Korean girl whispered. Euna slipped her thumb off her sword pommel and let it hang limply at her side. Her voice sounded hollow. Although not much, Reyna was happy she’d at least reacted to something.

Reyna and Frank dismissed them.

They started to shuffle out. Dakota and Micahel were called to escort them. Merry looked completely shocked as she clutched Dakota’s Kool-Aid flask. Calex had a similar stunned expression, but he couldn’t stop staring at Euna. As they left, the child of Eros gently touched her arm.

Before Axel could leave, Reyna called, “Axel Pax.”

He paused. His little brother scampered to a halt beside him.

Reyna glanced over at Frank. He still looked troubled. Once she was done talking to Axel, she’d have to ask him his impression on this group. For now, she had a matter to settle.

“Frank, do you mind if I speak with Axel alone?”

Frank jumped a little. “Mm? Oh, yea. No problem Reyna. Um… be careful around him.” He lowered his voice. “He… smells weird.”

Although an unprecedented comment, she’d learned to trust Frank’s animal instincts… even if they were a little… strange.

As Frank went to leave, his purple toga sweeping about him and threatening to trip the giant, the younger Pax brother gave a call of distress. Pax grabbed his brother’s good shoulder and whined into it. In Spanish, Reyna could hear him blubber, “What if she kills you? I know you two are into some weird flirting but—”
