Man. I just get so actually legitimately sad each time I remember that toh ended and that we live in the post-toh world. Like it really is over.
Ms Dana Terrace has said that she'd like to do more given the chance (and after some quality time off of bigger projects, just to chill), but as far as we know, it's the end.
Heck, we barely got anything after the final episode, no books, no special merch, no dedicated little chibi shorts, nothing really, aside from the, thankfully fun, get-togethers of the cast and crew!
Idk. Ah well actually nah, I do know, that this show just meant an enormous lot to me. Incredibly huge, the kind that you can't break away from and wouldn't want to anyway. The kind that feels like, man, where would I be without it.
Happy 1 Year, to the end of The Owl House. Thank you, The Owl House.
I hope the future is bright, for all of us.

#The Owl House#TOH#Owl House#and tbh. its also why I havent exactly been posting as much!#I just. really miss it man.#and thinking so hard of how great it all was. gets me choked up for real lol.#I do hope theres more for us in the future. I really cant say for certain.#Cause to be less sentimental and more analytical for a moment#TOH was d1sney's biggest original ip hit that wasnt a movie for both such a long time and in a good long time!#Yes yes the internet doesn't always entirely mean the reality of things (which is why financially bcg is their biggest hit technically)#but to actually think back upon it all#TOH always had news articles and video essays and huge followings on tons of communities#especially on youtube! which isn't that easy! Youtube will always be dominated by bigger named things so the fact that toh DID get trending#number 1 more than once? Was incredibly impressive. And not just that but the viewer demand and count were through the roof! Huge in general#television numbers. All to say that is is that toh was an enormous hit. both financially and to people. so. yeah. It's. kind of in the air?#I guess? that no one really knows what could happen. I mean hell amph1bia is still getting books.#Granted....lets not forget ofc that disknee really. really. reaaaally doesnt. like. toh. ×^| but who knows!#personally? still hoping for a save the light styled game someday. or just some game that I can play on my switch someday.#but yep! Enough of my rambling. Thank you for everything The Owl House. really. Truly.

Okay, I saw someone say that Nimona, while being good representation, “didn’t take the big step forward in queer rep that everyone says it did”.
That is wrong. So wrong, my dude.
Yes, an explicit and open queer relationship in children’s cartoons is not new, per ce. Hell, just this year, two popular kids’ cartoons had the main character in an open, adorable, plot-based queer romance. But this is different for a few reasons.
Reason number one, it isn’t left in suspense. Yes, they had that split for three odd weeks, but they started the film as a couple. One of the very first scenes is them together as a couple, Ambrosius saying he loves Ballister, them holding hands, Ballister leaning on Ambrosius’ shoulder. Ambrosius says he loves Ballister three times during the film, and none of them are any more than halfway in. It’s very clear, from their very first interaction, that they are an established relationship, which isn’t something I’ve seen...at all in other animation.
Secondly, they are the plot. Ambrosius not believing Ballister, Ambrosius cutting off Ballister’s arm, Ballister trying to get the video to Ambrosius - this is what drives the plot. In any other children’s animation with queer relationships, the relationship is not the main focus. Even The Owl House, which is so amazing with its constant representation, would still make sense if Luz and Amity never happened. But Nimona’s plot wouldn’t make sense without Ballister and Ambrosius’ relationship. It, quite simply, can’t be erased. It could work as a friendship, yes, but that’s the point. They could have just been two close friends that fell on opposite sides of a fight, but they weren’t. They were two lovers that fell on opposite sides of a fight.
Thirdly, they aren’t sanitized for “family viewing”. An emerging trend in children’s animation is to only have mlm relationships as fathers to make them seem more “family friendly”. With the exception of Kipo, there really isn’t many tv shows or films that places light upon an mlm relationship. And if it does, it'll be a teen relationship because teenagers being queer tends to come across as less “dirty” and more “innocent”. But Goldenheart is none of these things. They are adults without the mollifying aspect of having a family. And on top of that, they fight. They wield swords and they get bloody and they shoot at things and get angry and yell. They aren’t “clean” and “innocent”.
As well as this, they are in a film. Films are far more accessible than tv shows. You have to watch twenty seven episodes before Lumity in toh is canon. Troy kisses Benson on the eleventh episode of Kipo. And there are two hundred and eighty three episodes of Adventure Time before Marceline and Bonnie kiss. But with a film, the queerness is much more forward - especially in Nimona, where it’s literally the second scene. Animated films hardly ever display queer relationships, but Nimona did.
Finally - they aren’t perfect. I don’t know about you, but three weeks of thinking your boyfriend/maybe ex is a murderer? Doesn’t sound like a healthy few weeks to me. I have only seen big relationship arguments portrayed in straight relationships in cartoons - think Star Vs The Forces Of Evil - whereas queer relationships either have the massive fight prior to being canonically gay - She Ra - or have conflict, not arguments, that are dealt with quickly - Dead End/The Owl House. But Goldenheart? Goldenheart suffers. Their relationship is pushed to such extreme boundaries as for them to be pretty much exes throughout most of the movie. And yet, they are clearly healthy, happy and very much in love at the end.
TL;DR - Nimona is amazing with the queer representation, and it is a milestone for LGBTQ+ cartoons. Not only is the relationship romantic for the entire movie, the plot is driven by Ambrosius and Ballister’s sort-of-break-up. In short, they are treated the same way straight people are. They have flaws, they have massive arguments, they have plot importance, they have backstory. They are in love. And that’s what matters more than anything else.

a comprehensive list of all things sus about Adrian Graye
ok so i have been slightly obsessed with the illusion coven head since his introduction in hunting palisman, but now that we’ve had an episode with him as an actual character there are some things about him that feel super suspicious and i’m going to try my best to explain them here
1:Despite being the head of the illusion coven, We never actually see him cast any illusions.
When we’re first introduced to him when he tries to trick the school into joining coven he mentions that the illusion of him was cast by a different coven scout
Tumblr media
“Tom, that Adrian illusion was lacking a certain, hmm? You get me?”
and given his need to yell for the illusion to end rather than just stopping it himself, we can assume that he wasn’t in control of the illusion in that scene.
We can probably apply this logic to his later scene with the fake willow and Belos  - as we’ve seen in the past that illusions need a constant focus when cast by a witch, and he seemed a bit too concentrated on bullying his actors and kicking hunter in the back of the head to be casting anything.
Tumblr media
Him snapping his fingers and the Belos illusion vanishing could either be read as him dispelling the illusion or calling of the two Guards behind it, but given the lack of evidence towards the spell belonging to him, im choosing to believe the latter.
this leads us onto the next few points:
2: He casts spells without drawing a circle and
3: the only two times he draws a spell circle, he does so while holding/using his magical amplifier
in his first scene after Gus calls out the fake Adrian, we see him hand off his coffee cup and then in a poof of smoke - appears next to and grabs Gus. you cant touch illusions, so neither of those were fake, which means that, without drawing a spell circle he’s teleported across the room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We only see him draw a spell circle twice in the entire episode, the first time he literally uses the magical amplifier to draw it, and the second time he’s holding it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now these first three points could just be explained by saying “oh he’s the coven head he’s super powerful at illusions he probably doesn't need to concentrate or draw circles or whatever” but then even ignoring all that there’s -
4: this man is waaay to focused on the looking glass ruins
Graye was sent to Hexside by Belos to brand the children, but the moment the illusion stuff kicks off and he sees the looking glass ruins he abandons that plan to hunt down gus and figure out where the graveyard is. His reasoning is that the galderstones would be good gifts for belos, but are they worth abandoning his mission for?
the reasoning could just be that he’s figured that the branding mission was a bust and hes in the panic of ‘i need to please my boss so he doesn’t kill me for failing so bad’ and wants to make it up for him, but then why does he seem to be happier when he sees that the galderstones are intangible
Tumblr media
either way - this is not the face of a super confident person who has everything under control
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The looking glass ruins have come up a few times now in relation to the EC, and based on how good TOH is at setting up plot lines - it feels like they’re building it up to be more important than it seems.
then of course theres the one that a bunch of people are talking about
4: He got his ass handed to him by Gus’ memory bubble
Tumblr media
that shit fully incapacitated him, like he was still knocked out , fully catatonic later on, like - not even hunter got knocked down by this and he’s gone through some shit  - and Graye’s comments about bad memories feel way to prominent to just be a passing comment.
Theres been a fun trend of all the coven heads being ironic in some way , a bard with stage fright, a plant head who loves killing ect; so having an illusionist who’s been lying about something to get where he is today could be really fun
so whats up with this guy? lets figure it out- yeah he’s a basilisk
- similar fangs, tail and :3 face
Tumblr media
- similar hair styles
Tumblr media
- same blue teleportation magic
Tumblr media
- including the inspector from the first day we’ve only seen 4 of the 5 basilisks
Tumblr media
- Basilisk number 4 even has the same hair squiggle as Graye
theres kinda just a weird amount of evidence supporting this theory, it’s probably not true, and if it is, probably wont have a lot of plot relevance, but i cant help but think theres something else going on with this guy. He’s the only coven head who’s showed up by himself in an episode so far, and there’s just a lot of details and potentially foreshadowing stuff happening around him.
this ended up being way longer than i planned so kudos on reading all the way through

I noticed a certain trend that follows all my favorite quirky comfort characters?
1.) Marcy Regina Wu,(Amphibia) 2.) Faputa,(Made in Abyss) 3. Hunter Wittebane/Noceda,(TOH)
(Events shown with as little context as possible to reduce spoilers)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They suffer, alone, and isolated from those they love...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
… then consumed by a will greater than themselves, sent down a brutal path of suffering and pain...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
… In the end, while they come out with fully realized, redeemed, free, and loved again. This came with a heavy price, the damage dealt and treasured people/things lost will weigh on them for the rest on their lives. No matter much they’re really to blame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But despite of these burdens and having irreversibly changed, they still have a chance to bounce back and shine brighter than they ever did before.
(Poor Hunter hasn’t had his conclusion yet)

i was rewatching TTT for uhhh, [redacted] fanfic reasons :) and i am yet again annoyed by huntlow framing that has like, no resolution at all.
after luz and hunter find each other in the bathroom at the beginning of the episode and they talk about the secrets they’re keeping, there’s a pointed cut framing only amity and willow:
Tumblr media
and then, while staring at them, luz says: “we’ll tell them, when we’re ready.” the implication being that these two will have pointed reactions to the discoveries that 1) luz helped belos and 2) hunter is a grimwalker, for amity and willow respectively.
and like, sure, that’s what happens with luz, right?
even before the main plot kicks off, there’s a precedent of luz hiding stuff from or straight up lying to amity. of course, this is all justified within luz’s mental state and she takes every chance to open up (at least a little) to amity and deepen their bond as a result. by this time, the tally is at three with the collector reveal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
beyond the moment where everyone in the main group gets access to this information at the same time, there’s a scene setting up how luz feels that amity’s disappointment is imminent (lucy’s betrayal in the azura movie). and sure enough, once the fight is over, the show goes through luz’s biggest fear in this scenario.
Tumblr media
and after all of luz’s paranoia the “twist” is that obviously amity doesn’t blame her - it’s the rational outcome of the scenario that luz can’t internalize because of all her guilt and trauma. so amity explains why she’ll stay loyal to her (since luz is fighting against belos) and hunter seems to find some peace for his years of gaslighting and abuse by telling luz that belos tricked them and it’s not their fault.
so like, setup and payoff 101, yadda yadda. well done TOH. what just doesn’t pay off at all is willow’s involvement in the grimwalker reveal.
sure enough, she has the biggest reaction when luz mentions it during TTT:
Tumblr media
but it rings so hollow since she’s not the first to come to that conclusion. it’s gus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
tbh i think this is an underrated gus moment... how he also follows in the guilt-ridden emotions at the center of almost everyone in the main cast (luz, camila, willow, hunter and belos) by bringing back his trusting issues. he clearly thinks this is a choice he would’ve been able to make if he wasn’t so scared of putting himself out and making important decisions, given his past experiences doing so.
it also follows on the foreshadowing of gus learning that secret on the fight against belos during king’s tide.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like, even if willow initiates the moment that triggers hunter’s grief process from anger to sadness, it’s gus who ends up having a bonding moment with hunter. which is why it’s completely baffling that by the end of the episode hunter and willow summon a romantic pseudo-relationship out of fucking nowhere.
and like, i wouldn’t be saying any of this stuff if the show had only added gus to that scene. legit, only gus was needed in that frame. he’s even sat at the table two seconds after that bathroom scene ends.
Tumblr media
maybe you consider the nature of this post to be very nitpicky, and i get why. but, in my eyes, this is just the ongoing trend of TOH doing nothing to deepen hunter and willow’s relationship beyond only stating that they’ll become a couple soon - and the only time hunter and willow had a real conversation before FTF was when she still thought he was “caleb”.
as it stands, the first scene only works to point out that huntlow is canon. which is also the entire extent that the show is willing to do for them.

As we approach season three, I'm curious how our perception of the Collector will shift as we see more of him
I say this because a trend I've noticed with TOH villains is they get a lot less scary the more we see of them.
Lilith started out as the imposing head of the Emperor's Coven and turned into a bumbling, low level threat until she turned into a full on good guy.
Hunter was a fairly intimidating villain partly because of how mysterious he was, but the second we saw more of him he was the most pathetic (affectionate) man in the world, until he also became a full good guy.
Even Belos, who started out terrifying, gradually stopped being creepy and powerful as we learned how completely horrible he was. As time went on, he transformed from Emperor Belos, the extremely powerful ruler of a realm full of demons, to Phillip Wittebane, who I have no fear for because my hatred for him takes up all available emotions I have towards him. (His monster form is still extremely creepy though, in a very good way).
So I'm very curious to see if this trend will continue with the collector or if it will be subverted. Personally, I think it’d be very interesting if he got more terrifying the more we see of him.

Animal (2023, Sandeep Reddy Vanga)
Tumblr media
Let's talk about films. Animal broke out at the box office; it's still breaking collections. Every damn day. Why is this happening even though people are criticizing the film left and right, a few others defending it as though "Vanga unka hi papa hai". What do I think about all of this? I would say yeh toh hona hi tha.
Films like these are the only reasons that theaters can survive and make lots of money. So why won't producers make films like these which help them generate the income they need? Ask yourself when's the last time you've watched a low-budget film on the big screen? Vanga's formula has worked. You've also successfully generated a few Vanga's who will take his place in the future. Continuing this trend of badly written characters dominating the big screen. A friend of mine told me this "Achi filmein toh pirate karke ghar pe dekhte, theater mein dekhne ke liye aisi filmein hi achi hoti hai" As a person who wants to make films, to make good films this is scary because what do you mean you wouldn't want to see my films on the big screen unless there's violence in it; can't I make a good drama and have that move you? Like Avinash Arun's Three of Us? Like VVC's 12th fail? Both films which had me sobbing in the theater in a sophisticated crowd who enjoyed both films thoroughly.
I wouldn't say films like Animal shouldn't be made. But these films are made because you go pay and watch them. So do millions of others. If you'd been watching the good films then they'd put their money there. Go watch a good low-budget film, you'll probably feel much better than you did while you watched Animal. If you loved Animal, I'm sure your brain is so smooth I'd be able to see my reflection in it.

Exploring the Darker Themes in Jujutsu Kaisen and Their Narrative Importance
CW: Incest and Misogyny
Tumblr media
Jujutsu Kaisen is a series coated in horror imagery and it has never shied away from exploring dark and taboo subject matter. Two recurring themes in this series are incest and the treatment of women
Incest is prevalent in Jujutsu Society, particularly for the Nobles, where it seems to be more or less normalized. Naoya openly talks about viewing both Maki and Mai as "attractive and buxom," and we even have an interview from Gege, where he expressed that Mai's first crush was either Megumi or Maki.
Tumblr media
It isn't uncommon amongst nobility to prioritize "blood purity" by marrying within the family, but it makes sense for this idea to be so prevalent amongst Jujutsu Sorcerers who are obsessed with passing on inherited Techniques.
Outside of nobility, we see this same scenario play out with Mei Mei and Ui Ui. Their relationship is never commented on by outsiders, suggesting it's viewed at least partly as normal in that society
Tumblr media
But Gege doesn't just put these scenes in for shock value, they serve a purpose. Jujutsu Kaisen, despite being a Shounen, is a mature story. Dark material is often used to inform the reader about the deeper meaning behind the characters and the world. It's meant to make you think.
Jujutsu Society is corrupt and decadent, controlled by out-of-touch and regressive elders who care more about power and status than anything else. The structure is flawed, as we see addressed through characters like Gojo, Nanami, and Geto respectively.
We see this even further in how Jujutsu Society treats women.
Momo summed it up perfectly in her speech to Nobara. Women are not allotted the same luxuries as men. In order to be taken seriously as a Sorcerer, they have to be perfect. They need to be both beautiful and powerful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This trend is only further explored through the lens of the Noble Houses. The Zen'in actively look down on women and see them as lesser to men, a belief Naoya often espouses. Meanwhile, the Kamo had no issue with using Noritoshi's mom as a concubine, using her solely for her womb to birth an heir before kicking her out.
Women are seen as exploitable commodities and have to work twice as hard in Jujutsu Society to earn respect. Kenjaku, as Noritoshi Kamo, exploited a scared young woman for her Technique, using her to satisfy his own curiosity so he could make the Death Wombs. Even when he was found out, the concern was placed more on the scandal of the Cursed Items that were made rather than the treatment of the mother.
He later went on to violate the body of Kaori Itadori, using her womb as his own for the sole purpose of birthing a perfect vessel for Sukuna.
Uro Takoko, a Heian Era Shaman who managed to earn the esteemed title of the Head of the Sun, Moon, and Stars unit of assassins for the Toh, a Noble Clan who essentially controlled all of Japan back in the day, took the fall for a crime she didn't commit and was tossed aside.
Tengen, despite being a woman herself, has young women sacrifice themselves in order to merge with her and reverse her evolution, essentially disregarding their autonomy and using them as a tool. Riko herself was treated as less than human for her title as a Star Plasma Vessel, her death being treated as more of an inconvenience than a tragedy.
Both of these aspects tell the reader about the true state of Jujutsu Society and just how rotten to the core it truly is. It's uncomfortable, but it's meant to be. Corruption that runs this deep is meant to unsettle and disturb.
However, as dark as this series can be, there is always hope. Part of the beauty and maturity of Gege's writing is how he acknowledges both sides of humanity, the good and the bad.
Yūji and Sukuna's struggle in the most recent chapters illustrate that despite the pain of living, humans still fight for happiness in a world that's often set on taking it away.
Toji, despite being an assassin who murdered a teenage girl in cold blood, also gave up his son to a family he personally hated in hopes that he would have a better chance at life there than with him.
Geto was driven mad by the very same system that exploited people like him. For all the pain he caused, he wished for a world where Shaman wouldn't have to fight and die for an oppressive majority. He wished for freedom and safety for his people.
Even villains like Sukuna and Kenjaku have their moments of humanity. Where Gojo chided Jogo for being weak, Sukuna earnestly praised his strength in battle.
Tumblr media
Kenjaku praises both Mai and Miwa for their skills, two women who were seen as lesser by the community they live in. He also praises Yuki's talent and genuinely thanks Sasaki for being nice to his son
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elements of darkness can bring depth to stories, and shying away from it is to ignore a core part of humanity as a whole. You can't fully appreciate the light without first accepting the dark.
