Out in the pouring rain with Hou Ning and Subtextually Queer Bestie and Zhu Yun, watching Li Xun declare so sincerely and deliberately, "All of you are my precious memories."

A++++++ storytelling. That got to me. It haunts me. Li Xun was so proud and full of hope & promise at one point. We both saw him build to that and then saw how it all came tumbling down.

And now he stands there, homeless and looking at his few belongings tossed on the curb like trash. No family, the company he birthed is a mockery of his dream, he's rejected the love of his life, and he just barely escaped returning to prison.

But he still has these precious people & their love for him as untainted memories. That's the wealth he carries with him after losing everything else. It's both horrible and beautiful to watch him make this declaration as he's reaching out to his friend who is teetering on the same ledge that Li Xun knows far too well.

So the Star Wars sequel trilogy had a messy, disjointed plot, but what I really dislike is how it undid the optimistic hopeful ending of the original trilogy at every turn.

Han and Leia are in love!  Oops, they got space-divorced and their son hates them.

Luke’s optimism and moral compass helped him defeat the Emperor! Oops, he tried to kill his friends’ son and now he lives alone as a bitter hermit. (Also the Emperor is back.)

Ha ha, R2D2 is so cute and funny!  Oops, he’s been in a robot coma for years. From depression.

Am I supposed to be cheering and clapping over these revelations?  I didn’t expect the OT characters to have perfect carefree lives, but holy shit.  Yoda made out the best by virtue of ALREADY BEING DEAD.
