Louis Tomlinson Introduces 28: a Brand Embodying His British Upbringing, Musical Flair, and Football Heritage

Hypebeast sits down with the Doncaster-raised superstar to discover how he channeled his passions into a community-focused streetwear brand.

Many know Louis Tomlinson as a Doncaster lad-turned-pop-icon and part of era-defining boyband, One Direction. But despite his superstar status, the 31-year-old has never lost touch with his relaxed Northern soul. It’s been central to everything he puts his mind to, from music to football… and now, fashion.

After fighting his way through X Factor, growing his talent in One Direction, and going solo after their break-up in 2015, Tomlinson split fresh ground while keeping authenticity at the forefront. Growing up in Northern England naturally gravitated Tomlinson to football, selling pies at his boyhood club, Doncaster Rovers. But he’s kept a keen eye on fashion since his early childhood. “When I grew up, I viewed Doncaster as a working-class town. Now, when I go back to Doncaster, the streets have a real sense of style. That wasn’t the norm for me growing up; there was just scruffy and cool — there was really no in-between. We couldn’t afford really nice clothes, so it was just about working with what you got.”

Standing out has always been of utmost importance for Tomlinson, aligning his laidback attitude with the clothes on his back. Football tops were always a staple, taking to vintage and charity shops to find hidden gems that strayed from normality. “It was always important for me to look cool as a young lad, and I always enjoyed wearing good clothes. You might think, in a place like Doncaster, that it isn’t about fashion — and fashion might be the wrong word — because the thing that would turn people’s noses was that everyone is striving to look cool.”

Known for wearing striped tees and suspenders in One Direction, Tomlinson grew into his true self after the band’s hiatus, returning to his Doncaster roots and embracing comfort at all times. “As a young lad going into a business like this, you are surrounded by people telling you what’s cool and what isn’t. I’d say the boys could relate to this; you have to go through the motions of letting the industry tell you what they think you should do — because you don’t have enough confidence in that world yet to say: actually, no, I want to dress how I want to dress,” the singer-songwriter explains.

He grew up wearing essential British tracksuits, football tops, and trainers, drastically different from the boyband style that had every member dressed in “uniform.” “It’s only as I’ve grown confident in myself that I started to revert back to how I dressed as a young lad, just a kind of modern example of that. I really do wear Doncaster on every item of clothing that I put on, even if it’s subconscious, it’s so much a part of who I am.”

Launching 28 is a tribute to his humble beginnings in music, fashion, and sport, representing his Doncaster Rovers squad number and his lifetime devotion to the football club. The brand idea came to him nearly a decade ago, taking a closer look at standard tour merchandise and finding missing pieces, feeling “a creative itch that I wanted to scratch.”

28’s first drop is a tribute to all things football, embracing the beautiful game through vintage-inspired sports silhouettes destined for summertime. Checkered green tracksuits are ideal for pre-game antics, featuring distorted and faded patterns alongside “OFFICIAL PROGRAMME” collared jerseys.

While concert apparel caterers to the general public, 28 allows his artistic talents to run wild. “That’s why 28 excites me. It’s something that can be a little bit more tailored, a little bit more stylized. I suppose it’s similar to songwriting… seeing how deep your imagination can go when creating clothes.”

When designing 28’s first drop, Tomlinson pushed comfort forward through quality craftsmanship and refined fabric manipulations. His ideas feature heavily across every design, architected on lightweight hoodies, turtleneck collars, and distressed knitwear. Abstract floral illustrations bloom on additional designs, complementing the collection with a neutral color palette. Collections will release on the 28th of each month, expanding its sportswear identity one step at a time.

28 is undeniably football-focused, making clothes he would identify with as a young boy growing up in “Donny.” Tomlinson aims to bring his community together with interactive drops and a story to tell, enlisting emerging creatives to front the brand’s first campaign. “Community is something that runs throughout everything I do, and after getting the casting ideas for the models, I knew I wanted to use street models. I didn’t want to use that traditional model face because that’s not what I grew up with,” Tomlinson says.

“If I picture that rough lad I grew up with in Doncaster, he certainly didn’t have that look — he just looked cool in the clothes,” Tomlinson says with a wide smile, “There’s a beautiful authenticity to that. I think there’s a more interesting way and authentic way of telling these stories for 28.” While Tomlinson is the brand’s Creative Director, he sees 28 standing on its own two feet without his face attached, building a core community within its evolving identity.

So what’s in store next for Tomlinson? “I’m going back on tour, which is my favorite thing to do. At some point, there’ll be a new record. I don’t know when, though; I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself and just trying to enjoy it. I’m mostly tour-focused right now — that’s why I love creating 28 — because it means that when my brain is all on touring and music, it’s creatively fulfilling to get into something else and scratch that itch.”

Apex Build 10 Is Now Available!

After over three years, I have finally completed Build 10 of Apex! This is planned to be the final feature release of Apex as a Pokémon fangame before converting it into my own original IP (more on that another time).

As for this build, you can now continue the story of Apex in Chapter 5 by exploring the western half of Abbadon, including the sprawling Megiddo Plains, the touristy beachside town of Ys, the sleepy floral town of Eden, and much more! Check out the changelog below for a full list of additions and changes, comprising the largest changelog so far.

As always, you can get the game either through the launcher (recommended) or assemble the game yourself through manual downloads on the blog.

Levitate system overhaul. Pokémon that formerly had the Levitate ability now inherently levitate based on their species. See the wiki for more details.

Pokémon that normally evolve due to trading now evolve when leveled up in Assiah. Any required held items are still needed.

New fast food items that are cheaper versions of strong healing items, but lower your Pokémon's EVs randomly when consumed.

Artifacts now give badge boosts. War God's Hammer: Attack, All-Seeing Eye: Sp. Attack, Quantum Mirror: Speed, Geos Gauntlets: Defense, Hydrophobic Disc: Sp. Defense. For existing save files, use the associated artifact in the overworld to permanently enable the respective boost.

Added Not-So-Crazy Fesiq to Old Jul'far Ruins as a dung merchant.

Added ambience to Sagaxis Forest, Mt. Belial Upper, Shrieking Cliffs, and Acacia Lake.

Acacia Town

Opened a previously unused house in Acacia Town.

The Thornwood Inn in Acacia Town begins charging for lodging after the player enters Jul'far. No more warping back to Acacia Town for free heals!

The Puzzle House is now accessible immediately upon visiting Acacia Town for the first time.

Jul'far

Added more path blocking to help keep players from getting lost.

Added a new bandit encounter with Bandit Logan.

Added some new visible items, one of which only appears during the raid.

The Camerupt Cart that goes to the Old Jul'far Ruins now cannot be used until after the player has visited the ruins, to prevent skipping the entire desert.

Hard Mode

Items cannot be used from the bag during battles (except Pokéballs, as normal).

During the Jul'far raid, Bandit Captain Kurt now only appears on Hard Mode.

You can now forfeit trainer battles outside of Hard Mode by selecting Run, but beware the losing cost!

WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE

Welp, here we are gang. Seems worth doing a real introduction even though this account has existed for a couple of weeks now. Glad some of our friends from the cursed bird app are already finding us, but for the uninitiated...

Live From The Apocalypse is not-for-profit TTRPG studio; a collective of over 15 talented players, GMs, and content creators who record, stream, edit, and produce hours of free actual play content, discussions, and interviews focusing on tabletop role-playing games and the community around them each week—all while raising money for progressive causes and good organizations. Everything we do benefits a nonprofit or aid organization exclusively, even merch sales and Patreon support exclusively keeps the lights on and covers operational costs. Since we started doing this we've raised well over $20,000 for organizations like Planned Parenthood, the International Rescue Committee, Communities United Against Police Brutality, Extra Life, and many more!

Class Reunion [D&D 5E]: 10 years ago 4 high school students from Avalon, Ohio were trapped in our homebrew D&D 5E setting, the magical world of Annwn. Now, reunited after a decade, the time has come to discover what brought them there in the first place.

And on Wednesdays you can find our short-form series of games known as Wild Card Wednesdays, which features a rotating cast of GMs and players. We also make podcasts which are available on your podcast platform of choice under the banner Live From The Apodcalypse! -castle cr.ashers. it is hit hack-and-slash game castle cr.ashers. i take the place of red knight and meg takes the place of the blue princess. we’re together before the plot starts and they avoid getting kidnapped so we go through everything together <3. eventually we meet doug who has the role of the conehead groom, we defeat him and he begrudgingly joins us, we have an enemies-to-lovers journey, the end <3. i’m very fond of this silly au because doug is very cute when you put her in a situation like this :) also cosmeg adventures!!!!!! <333

SIGH this is gonna be the longest section. since they’re on opposing sides in their og ff.vii universe there are a lot of complexities that come with it, and the aus are mostly playing around with that by getting rid of that element completely……..

-turk!chrome au. this one’s kind of simple it just means they work together instead of against each other, and also the number of possible scenarios goes up a lot because of the close proximity. ciss.nei is also present in this au and her n chrome are both turk partners and qpps!!!!!

-octo.path 2. INITIALLY in this au chrome n reno were both thieves (chrome being dancer class who was also story-wise a thief, reno being actual thief class) who because of Unlikely Situations ended up being traveling partners, but THEN i realized HEY. WHY DIDNT I MAKE RENO A BLACKSNAKE. so he’s a blacksnake now. i don’t know why i didn’t think of that he’z literally a new delsta guy. and there are jester npcs in new delsta!!! so chrome can fit in pretty well without having to change much about him. i really like the vibe of this one but parts of it give me emotionz . you get it. moving on,

-i did think of a b.aldur’s gate 3 au. i guess it’s similar to the scrapped octo.path one.. they’re both rogues (chrome arcane trickster, reno assassin), meet after the tadpole debacle and decide trying to cure it together is the best option. (it might be in-character for reno to be like Eh. if i die i die *walks off alone* but i’m not lettinf him do that they’re doing this together somehow. maybe when they do the tadpole mind-connect thing he sees something interesting from chrome’s past and is like hmmm. i dunno.) this one is mostly for funny dnd moments (they’re my comedy ship after all.) such as chrome being like “uh no i don’t trust you to disarm that i’ll do it.” n reno being like “you sure?” and then chrome crit-failing and them standing there in silence with the blinded status effect. (“…see, i knew that was gonna h-” “don’t say anything.”)

-HFNDJ I JUST REMEMBERED I MADE THEM A GHOST TR.ICK AU. I DONT REMEMBER THE DEAL WITH IT HOLD ON. it was like . chrome died and became a ghost like s.issel……. and found reno dead too, used his ghost tricks to save him and ended up helping him with his shady real life work stuff …… ? it conflicts with regular chrome’s morals but if you mess with it the concept is really fun. ghost partner in crime. mind communication shenanigans. i wanted to draw fake screenshots for them in the art style hfndj i should do that sometime.

-oh i do have a rune f.actory au for them i guess. just in concept though <3. i can’t think of??? many canon rf charas that act similar to reno?? but he would have leon-esque dialogue humor-wise (AGH). and if chrome is the protag, giving him supposed “disliked items” does nothing because he just thinks it’s funny. game mechanic where you CANNOT lower this guy’s affection . i don’t think he would be affiliated with the sechs empire but he would have something mysterious like that going on… and he wouldn’t say much about himself so maybe his heart points would be capped lower ‘til a certain point like doug’s are??? and he wouldn’t tell you what gifts he likes either. there’d be a dialogue branch like “so what do you like, then. :/” “where’s the fun in that? try figuring it out.” and then his reactions to gifts onward would change based on that. (“really? thought you knew me better than that.”) (“hey, you’re gettin’ warmer!”) (“you’re puttin’ a lot of effort into this game. almost like you *care* about givin’ me shit.” “UH, *NO—*”)

MOMENTS IN TIME: SINNOH'S RISING STAR

Cynthia Karashina showed a remarkable aptitude for reading at a very young age, getting her hands on any tomes left lying around Celestic’s Historical Research Center. Her grandmother, Dr. Karashina, would often find toddler Cynthia lying in bed with some of the Center’s advanced research, trying so hard to digest the words, diagrams, and photos. (Cynthia would soon begin keeping ‘research journals’ of her own, cataloguing the town’s common Pokemon and people with childish drawings and descriptions.)

Cynthia’s curiosity knew no bounds, and she peppered everyone with endless questions, eager to take on more of the world. She quickly became transfixed with the nearby Celestic Ruins, studying the cave paintings and collecting rocks with or without permission. (Dr. Karashina had quite the time looking after her.)

Hoping to channel her daughter’s energy into something productive, Dr. Karashina enrolled young Cynthia into an ‘Introduction to Pokemon’ class at the Solaceon Day Care. Despite the long hours of travel, this turned out to be a great decision–Cynthia quickly fell in love with Pokemon, and the Day Care became her second home. She was a diligent worker, studying, cataloguing and helping to care for countless Pokemon and their eggs. Cynthia’s first Pokemon–an orphaned RIOLU–actually hatched from an abandoned Egg, and TOGEPI and BUDEW followed not long after. Even though Cynthia was so young, the Day Care Couple already believed her to be a capable trainer, with untapped potential.

Dr. Karashina was also aware of her granddaughter’s gifts, and utilized her academic connections to get Cynthia into an intensive and private boarding school in Hearthome. Though she was often scolded for wandering off (and known for being ‘that professor’s kid’), Cynthia forged ahead, excelled in her studies, and eventually landed a coveted research opportunity with the renowned Professor Rowan. She was given a Pokedex and a simple assignment: journey far, and fill that up.

And so, she did.

Cynthia’s fervent rampage through the Sinnoh region was a sight to behold, a whirlwind of badges, explorations and other (mis)adventures. Some highlights:

Got way too sidetracked in Eterna City, a place that truly kickstarted her obsession with Sinnohan myths and legends. (She also acquired her own Explorer Kit here and spent nearly a month underground. She located countless fossils, which were hustled back to Oreburgh…and one very odd Keystone.)

Wrestled a GIBLE in the Wayward Cave. (She has the arm scar to prove it, but Gible–as many know–has become one of her most important team members since.)

Met and formed a fast friendship with a like-minded teen named CYRUS. (He was so soft-spoken, but he had big dreams and plans, just like her.)

Finally caught her first Pokemon properly after earning her fourth Gym Badge, a FEEBAS in the fascinating Mount Coronet. (Not long after, a SPIRITOMB blossomed forth from the Odd Keystone, requiring a timely visit to Fantina for advice.)

Cynthia’s ascendancy was absolute, inevitable. And in her late teens, she became SINNOH’S CHAMPION.

This radar trailer is parked around the corner from my house. There’s some construction nearby. I think the police thought there might be a lot of people rapidly detouring through the neighborhood. That hasn’t happened.

That construction is to replace “channelized right turn islands” with dedicated right turn lanes and “traffic calming medians.” I read the city’s full description of the plan and I like it. I’m very happy to see the plan also includes flashing yellow left-turn traffic signals. Those things rock. A few people, commenting on these changes on social media, acted like the city was introducing COVID vaccines directly into the water supply.

A sign of my maturity. Before I stopped my truck for this picture the “your speed” window read 26. A few decades ago I would have made several passes, trying for “high score” even though winners don’t get to leave their initials on the screen.

Tonight was Sulley’s second puppy training class. After the last class he and I practiced the skills. He’s getting it, slowly. Sulley likes people at the dog park and the breweries he’s been to. For some odd reason though he gets really shy around the two trainers at obedience class.

He’s learning some stuff in this class.

But he will not be valedictorian.

PRE-GAME / HEAVY CANON DIVERGENCY

IT'S BEEN A WEEK SINCE RELEASE AMIGOS, time to type down some end-game stuff and explaining Geeta’s further canon-divergency. I’ll put it under a read more and still tag it though 🤔 Warning, heavy spoilers and it’s very long

- She knew the professors before the events of the crater right at the beginnings of their research just a little after she started taking responsibility as the top champion of Paldea and head of the academy board. She was a fan of their works seeing as it was uncanny and touched on subjects other scientist scrutinized or called impossible myth. Geeta always believed that nothing should be unexplored and continued to keep up with them eventually striking a friendship. 

- Then came the time the Terastal phenomenon was a concept and the great crater was brought up. Area Zero has been a bit of a taboo subject especially after how historian Heath was widely discredited for his expedition work long ago in history. No one knows whats down there and no doubt it’d be incredibly dangerous....and expensive. Hardly anyone would want to fund something like that on their word alone. 

- ... Which is where Geeta decided to put her foot and word forward. If anyone would support a project it would be through the champion’s mouth after all. Geeta was a favorite of the nation through her academic excellence during her time at the academy and the sheer force of her and her Pokemon’s strength. Through her and Klavell on behalf of the academy they’d help fund the research. The tera orbs later made with the research was shared with the Paldean league and the academy, only to be used with special permission and classes.

- But again, no one really knows whats down there. Geeta did go down with them during intervals to help study and protect them from the unknown. Not to say they weren’t incredible trainers on their own, but with the unsure nature of undiscovered pokemon and the affects of the crater they’ll need help from someone who they’d trust and was strong. 

- Somewhere in that time she met and caught her Glimmora which could only be found in Area Zero. Some part was to try and understand the Area Zero pokemon. Eventually it becomes her ace in battle and the new Pokemon was added to the dex.

- It was going good! ... For awhile. 

- She started noticing that the professors were .... enraptured with their work ... maybe even a little too much. ... Hah. That’s alright...! They were just excited after all....!

- There’s been A LOT of close calls with the paradox Pokemon coming from their new project even for her team. It doesnt seem to be letting up ... “ Hey, do you think this is starting to get a little to close? ...No? ”

- ....The professors have been coming out less and less. It’s really starting to worry her. She should say or do something....but Geeta always had a hard time saying ‘no’ to them. They were her friends after all and they worked really hard to get here... She doesn’t want them to think she couldn’t be depended on.

- At some point one of the professors leaves. Geeta becomes incredibly worried about how much reality or sense was being made by whoever was continuing work. Something about an AI in case something “happens” to them?? What’s that suppose to mean?

- Eventually there was little reaching the professor. She was getting shut out more and more. The Pokemon were becoming impossible to predict but she doubted they’d budge from their lab even if she did try and do something. 

- ....An attack happened and her and her Pokemon couldn’t hold it back. The last thing she saw before a black out was nothing standing between it and the professor. When she came too she was on the surface of Paldea already predicting the worst must have happened.

- But Klavell was actually able to reach them through their communication channel before she could scramble back down regardless of injuries and they seemed...fine? Miraculously even. Somethings not right, but she didn’t want to press it any longer.

- But so dramatized by the attacks, the experiences and what she swore was the professor’s last moments, Geeta could no longer go down there nor did she think they’d want her coming back after failing to hold rampages back. Eventually it was even written in the school’s law that no student, even champion leveled, was allowed down there. At all. No one should go through what she witnessed.

- Geeta ... wasn’t the same after that. The weeks following was experiencing heavy episodes of anxiety and ptsd that eventually she circumvented with lots of work. She was the champion, the league’s chairwoman and schoolboard head; she could not take a moment for herself when so many people counted on her. So she hid all of it with a soft smile; her calm and elegant composure made no one worry.

- Time’s been going by. Klavell still keeps in touch with the professor down in the zero lab but ... she hasn’t. Not for some time. Maybe it was because she got busier and busier...or maybe it was because she couldn’t go through that experience again. She at least knows they’re fine....., right?

- To this day she has smiling depression and still experiences episodes of ptsd and heavy survivors guilt. What if she said something earlier? What if she stopped the funding? What if she just picked them up by force and got them out? Maybe they wouldn’t have listened to her or pushed back but now she’ll never know if it would’ve made a difference. Ultimately she feels very isolated with these emotions. She can’t tell anyone about it. No one can doubt her when the world was on her shoulders. She can’t let anyone else down. 

- For now she focuses on the league, the school and Paldea. Though this all still no doubt hangs in the back of her head.

ren:

fulfilled the prophecy and became taller than kuukou, just like all the other dark haired dudes he finds himself next to lmao

he’s handsome but he has a gloomy disposition despite actually being a happy person in general lol

along with his naturally gloomy looks, the trauma has also given him a strange sense of humour (luckily kuukou can read him just fine lol)

he took kuukou’s advice and started training!!!! he took up mma and turned out to be decent at it so he’s going to school for physical therapy to be a personal trainer

he teaches self defense classes at his local gym to help pay for college even tho he is moderately comfortable with money 🤗

unami

along with her sister, she runs a youtube channel called ‘thrifting waves’ where they find cute clothes on a budget!!!! their channel is of moderate fame!!!!

she sometimes invites ichiro on her channel to bring in a different viewing demographic (that’s the intent at least lol) once kuukou reappeared in everyone’s lives, she started bringing him on the channel as well

her family is still living paycheck to paycheck tho 😔 she and her sister split the ad revenue the channel makes and she uses her cut to pay for college tuition

she’s in school for social work with a specialty in general welfare!!!!! she may be on track for a government position 🫢

she also really really hates capitalism and will call kuukou to complain about society when her tuition hits her back account lol (kuukou helpfully suggests destroying the system lol)

Hey folks, for my benefit more than for anyone else--as this whole blog is--here's a timeline of my spring 2022, pieced together from screenshots and memories: (it gets personal and heavy at the end)

12/30/2016 - I ambitiously start a new save on Pokémon Platinum Version, my first time playing it not as a child. I immediately put it down and don't pick it up for seven years, when I take...

4/23/2022 - My first screenshot (shitty photo) of my actual first adult playthrough of Platinum, showing a Lv. 27 Luxio named Alpha. I must have started a couple days prior. (Alpha is currently chilling in Violet as a Lv. 100 Luxray, only ever used 2 rare candies)

4/29 - I defeat Cynthia by the skin of my teeth.

5/6 - The ~Breakup~ to which I allude often, which is pivotal in this story, happens

Also 5/6 - I buy Pokémon Legends: Arceus as a treat. I play it quite a bit and--despite its faults--enjoy it quite a bit too.

5/9 - I buy the red and black DS also as a treat, realize it looks like a Sinnoh Pokédex, and pop Platinum in. My in-game Pokédex reads 119 obtained. Bipolar manic response to intense emotional distress kicks in. I think, "You know what, why not catch 'em all? Better yet, why not make a Living Dex?"

5/11 - I catch 19 Bidoofs to fill slots in the PC where mons i can't possibly catch would go so I can actually track who I still need. Out of spite, I name one "MANAPHY." Pokédex reads 155 obtained.

5/16 - Pokédex reads 183 registered. I've caught almost every Pokémon possible on one cartridge of Platinum.

5/20 - Content to move everything forward to White, I pick up my playthrough of White that I abandoned in freshman year of college when my Gold DS broke. I'm 7 gyms in already, time for the home stretch.

5/24 - I beat White. Hell Yeah. This will become my Living Dex save until October.

5/28 - I move all my Pokémon forward to White and document everything in my save. Pokédex reads 185 registered. Play clock is at 159:35. I reset. Time to Nuzlocke.

6/1 - First photo evidence of my Nuzlocke, showing me in a very dire spot against an enemy ace trainer's Luxio.

6/7 - A screenshot of PL:A in the Basculegion quest. I guess I'm still playing this here and there.

6/21 - I beat my first ever Nuzlocke. Play Clock at 141:31.

And that's how I played 301 hours of Pokémon Platinum Version in the span of two months. That's 12.5 days, or 20.3% of all the time in that span. That doesn't even count the time in White or P:LA. Keep in mind that for April until the breakup I had four classes, and from then to September I had an internship that demanded 20 hours/week (quite a bit of the grinding in the Nuzlocke happened on the clock). So it's not like the only thing I did was play Pokémon.

You know what? I'm not embarrassed. I was heartbroken. I was lonely, home for the summer, away from all my friends and almost every other distraction. I needed something to fill the gaping whole in both my heart and my schedule. Pokémon was there for me. So was my family, and so were my friends (digitally). I wasn't alone, especially not with all those damn Pokémon I caught.

If anything, I'm proud of myself. I've been to incredibly dark places. When I was younger, it got so bad I did something that leaves scars on me to this day. This time, an older, stronger, more hope-filled version of myself channeled my manic energy and overwhelming emotions into something entirely harmless: a video game. Better yet, I made personal achievements out of it. For the first time ever, I had completed a regional Dex, and I attempted--AND WON--my first ever Nuzlocke.

I joked that I switched mains in Smash Bros from Samus to Pokémon Trainer because I played a debatably unhealthy amount of Pokémon. The debate is in why I played so much. Was it unhealthy when it kept my emotionally stable? Was it unhealthy when it might well have prevented more self harm? I think not. You hear that, kids? Playing Pokémon for a fifth of your time is healthy in all situations forever. Obligatory /s.

Rage Fire Institution

Accelerating. 36.

Maki was now officially in training mode. 4:30 am starts in bitter cold weather seemed cruel. Tatsumi was cruel. Maki had been nervous to see Tatsumi again once his fever finally cleared and he was up for piloting again, but it seemed all for naught once Tatsumi started excitedly explaining his training plan for the next month. Wake up, run 5kms, shower, breakfast, mod training, lunch, TC training, dinner, homework, collapse into bed. Not only did he have mech training, he had hand to hand training with Anthony and Stella, sometimes Tatsumi when he felt like it. Tatsumi was a firm and fair teacher, but he’d never imagine him standing there channeling Skylark and pushing Maki to the point he didn’t know up from down.

“Oi, turn your fucking alarm off and get the fuck up! You’ve got a competition to win, fuckwit”

With such motivation words from Tarva, Maki dragged himself out of bed. He’d been questioned endlessly by his roommates once his name was known across campus as a competitor. Strangers seemed to think it also gave them permission to come up to him and start questioning him about the competition. Maki loathed the extra attention and wished he could stick them in his shoes for a day and so they could see if it was as fun as they seemed to think it was. And it wasn’t his fellow students making a fuss, it was his sister. Mina called him every day once her classes were finished. Maki had been embarrassed at first, teased when he’d duck off to talk to her, before Tatsumi stepped in, and now his whole team had talked to his sister.

Dressing for his daily dose of torture, it was bucketing down with rain by the time Maki made it to the dorm doors. Waiting outside, Tatsumi wielded an umbrella. Any hopes of returning to his warm bed were dashed, the alpha letting himself out to join his friend in the misery

“We’re running in this?”

“Fuck no. Come on, my shoes are already soaked. We’re headed to the gym”

Making a break for the gym turned into a silent competition between them. Maki winning, but that was because he had boots compared to Tatsumi’s trainers. Letting them in, the lights were on and so was the heating. His friend prepared ahead of time

“Shit, this is more like it. I thought my balls were going to freeze off out there”

Tatsumi gave a laugh, toeing off his wet shoes to leave them by the door. Maki noticing he’d skipped his socks, so running couldn’t be on the plans for them

“We can’t have that. And don’t go thanking me just yet. We’ve got a job to do before we can train today”

“Why don’t I like the sound of that?”

“Because you know me too well. In the military they’d throw you out in that weather, but today, we’re getting in touch with your creative side”

Maki gave a snort. He didn’t have a creative side, outside of mech paint. His mech had taken his breath away when he’d seen it in its freshly painted glory. At first came the disappointment with its orange and white exterior, until he remembered what would happen when he activated it. It looked completely beastly and terrifying in its black coat, everything he’d hoped it could be

“I don’t have one”

“Don’t tell me that. Come on, we need to get started or it won’t be done by breakfast”

Maki’s stomach gave a loud rumble. Being an alpha meant he usually consumed a high calorie diet thanks to his dynamic. Tatsumi could eat like an alpha, but Maki found he still ate far more. His friend shaking his head at him, starting to lead the way into the control room

“That’s forcing my hand. Fine, food first, then work”

“You got us food?”

“Of course. I knew we couldn’t go jogging when I saw the weather forecast for this morning. I did consider making you run laps, but I’ve got something planned for today so this needs to come first”

Opening the door to the control room, Tatsumi had been busy. Bagels, coffee, buckets of paint, brushes, and long thick canvas laid in wait. Maki had a sinking feeling

“Don’t tell me…”

Beaming at him, the omega nodded as he patted the roll of canvas

“Our banners came. We’ll be painting them today. I already confirmed with Li that he and his cheer team will come at 7, so will the research team, as well as Stella and Anthony. Plus a few more guests after lunch. We had the lettering outline professionally printed, but I felt for something like this, it’d be more fun to let everyone decorate their hopes and dreams”

Maki was not a painting person. Try as he might, the line always seemed to move after he’d painted. He and painting were mortal enemies

“No offence, I would rather run laps”

“Where’s your school spirit?”

“In bed, where we should be. I’m no artist”

Tatsumi blew a raspberry at him

“Bah. It’ll be fun. Andes gave us the floor for today seeing we couldn’t do this outside. My aim is to get this done before lunch. And I’ve got another surprise for you”

“I don’t think I want it”

“Fine, but I think you’ll love it when you see it. If you want to get started eating, I’ll carry this out”

The roll of canvas looked heavy, and not to step on Tatsumi’s strength, Maki didn’t want his friend struggling alone. Breakfast wouldn’t taste as good with Tatsumi’s huffing and puffing

“I’ll help you carry it out. Breakfast better be worth all this”

Beaming at his complaining, Tatsumi patted the pile of canvas again

“Excellent, my manipulation worked. Honestly, this shit is heavy. I’m glad we won’t have to carry all of it around everyday”

He’d been had. There he was thinking of Tatsumi and Tatsumi was already three moves ahead

“You’re an arsehole. I hope you know how disappointed your grandson is”

“As long as he doesn’t hate me. Grab the other end, we’ll figure them out once they’re rolled out. There’s something good waiting inside”

“Unless it’s my bed, you’re lying”

Tatsumi teased him, tone as if taking to a small child instead of a full grown alpha

“Does my poor little man need a nap?”

Maki deadpanned his friend back. There were seven hours left until lunch and no nap time in sight. Yes. He needed a nap. He needed a nap in his warm bed

“Yes”

Tatsumi snorted. Maki was more than relieved that they’d been able to keep being friends as if nothing had happened. Plus, maybe if there were enough of them then they wouldn’t notice if he slipped off for a small nap. His friend lifting his end of the canvas

“Aw, I promise you an early night tonight. Today is all about fun”

“Maybe for you. I can’t paint for shit”

“Ah, but you will and you will like it. Come on, get those alpha muscles moving”

“You get yours moving. How are you so happy? It’s cold, raining, and we’re painting”

“You’ll find out this afternoon… and I may not have slept. Lets goooooo. Double time!”

Carrying the canvases out to the gym, when Tatsumi let his end drop, Maki did the same. His friend should have slept. Under the light of the control room, versus how Tatsumi looked under the gym lighting, the man really didn’t look terribly well. Maki making a mental note to keep checking on him during the day as the last thing they needed was Tatsumi collapsing because his training program was too much. As Tatsumi went to move to unroll the canvases, Maki stepped I

“Move, I’ll do it. You said there was something good in here, right?”

“Yep. If possible I want to get it out and organised before everyone else shows up”

“You’re not going to give me any kind of clue are you?”

Tatsumi shook his head, covering his smile with his hand. Maki wished he’d stop doing that as if he had something to be embarrassed about, nothing embarrassing counted when it was only the two of them alone

“Nope. If you can’t figure it out from all the clues you have, then I’m not helping you with the one”

Maki rolled his eyes. Taking the ends of the pile of canvas, he pulled them out towards him, unrolling them with zero care

“It’s not exactly fair when you know what’s happening and I don’t”

“If you complained less and worked faster you’d have found it by now. Okay, first one is to be painted. Let’s drag them into kind of a circle so we’re organised”

“I’ll drag, you direct. Alpha muscle and all that”

Working through the pile, Maki didn’t know why they needed so many banners. It was a six person cheer team

“Don’t you think this is a bit much?”

“No? Li and I discussed this”

If Li was involved then there was definitely going to be overkill, Maki pulling off another banner to be painted and dragging it away from the pile with a huff

“It’s not like the whole school is coming to see us”

“No, but we needed banners and it’s good for us to show we care. Though I did think we would have hit that by now”

There Tatsumi went again. Reaching the spot for the banner, Maki let himself fall on his arse. He was waging a sit in protest

“I’m not moving until you tell me what the hell has you so happy. There’s not going to be a huge cheque in the middle of all of this, is there?”

“No, but it’s just as good. Okay, maybe not just as good, but you can’t quit now”

Maki flipped him off, then flopped onto his back

“I’m protesting you and your happy mood. There’s six people in our cheer squad, Tatsumi. Six”

“So you’re not going to cheer for Stella and Anthony in their individual matches? And no one from the research time can cheer for their mods?”

Sitting back up, he’d not thought of that

“They’re allowed to watch?”

“What did you think we were taking them for? To repair mods and stayed cooped up until we need them? It’s not all about you”

“It could be. And I guess I’ve been too busy training to think, thanks to someone”

“You’re welcome. Fine, sit there you slacker, it’s painful watching you as it is. Let the real man get this done”

Maki took the bait hard

“You? You look ready to faint at any moment. What have you got that I don’t?”

Tatsumi grabbed the top banner and began dragging it off the pile towards his side of the gym

“Patience? No shoes? Five cups of coffee and knowing that you’ll love what’s waiting when you find it… but maybe I am asking too much of my poor little grandson”

“You’re insufferable when you’re like this”

“I’ll take the compliment. These muscles were made by combat, so a few small banners won’t defeat me”

“No, but I will. 5 banners each. Loser has to do what the winner says until lunch”

“Deal. You’d better pick up the pace then. I’m one up”

“I think you’re forgetting all the ones I’ve already dragged”

“You offered and the deal wasn’t in affect that the time you moved them. Get moving then”

Maki couldn’t win.

Tatsumi was excited. The banners for the individual pilots had been printed. The ones that would be hung by the school were already in the hands of the institutions maintenance team. Tatsumi had had three printed to hang in the mech training gym, and three smaller ones printed for their student pilots. Dragging off the last of the banners with the school emblem on them, he smiled at the sight of Stella standing in front of her bright yellow mech. It meant losing the competition with Maki, but it was well worth it because he knew the second Maki saw himself, he’d be excited.

Dragging the emblem over to the other ones, Tatsumi intentionally over fussed on the edges, giving Maki time to get back to the pile. Watching him, he saw the confusion on Maki’s face, before Stella’s banner was pulled back so he could check what was underneath

“Uh, Tatsumi…”

Pulling the thick silver marker out of his back pocket, Tatsumi walked back to the banners, holding the marker out to Maki

“Surprise. Here, I’ll take Stella, you go ahead and take a good hard look, then sign it. That signature might be worth something by the end of this”

“You want me to sign this? Isn’t that defacing it?”

“I’m pretty sure it’s fine. Stella and Anthony will sign there’s too. Call it favouritism, if it makes you feel better, but I wanted to see you find yourself before the others got here and you clammed up”

“I don’t remember posing for this”

Tatsumi chuckled. He knew Maki’s routine was hectic, but to forget he’d had his photo taken for the school forum was something else

“You posed the same day Stella and Anthony did. Then that image was combined with the best one of your mech. I chose it activated because I know you hate the white and orange”

Dressed in black with his midnight black mech, Maki looked like an avenging angel, descended from the heavens to win the competition. No one who looked at the photo would think a little thing like publicity would turn Maki into a walking idiot. He’d bumbled through the questions quite adorably then fallen into a sulk. For a “scary alpha”, he’d been terribly cute. Even the research team had been swayed. With wide eyes, Maki looked up at him almost fearfully

“Prof… can I really do this?”

It’d been a long time since he’d heard Maki calling him “Prof” or “Professor”. Tatsumi smiling gently

“Of course you can. I chose you. Do you really think I’d let you lose if I had no faith?”

“I…”

Getting to his feet in a flash. Tatsumi found himself in Maki’s arms. Stella’s banner beneath Maki’s boots as the alpha hugged him tightly

“I… I… thank you”

Wrapping his arms around Maki, Tatsumi smiled. Maki wasn’t one for hugging, nor was he one for public displays of friendliness. Had the others been there then he’d never of hugged him

“You’re welcome. I started this, but it’s you that’s making it happen”

“No… it’s because of you… Tatsumi”

Tatsumi’s heart gave a funny beat at his name. He knew Maki was precious to him, not only as a student but as a close friend. He was in too deep with the alpha, no matter what he might say, and no matter what his friends also said. He cared for Maki and he wanted to see him succeed with every fibre of his being

“Maki… I won’t let you down. I’ll be there for all of it and I’ll be cheering for you when you step into the arena. I don’t know if you’ll sink or swim but I know without a shadow of a doubt you will give it your all”

“You’ll be watching?”

The hug had passed a simply hug. Maki’s warmth was making Tatsumi’s exhausted muscles relax. He couldn’t scent Maki, so he knew it was because of their closeness. Every bit of him trusted in his friend

“Of course. I can’t be in the arena with you, but I can be there as close as I can be. We’re all supporting you. We all want to see you win. We all believe in you, kiddo”

“Tatsumi… I…”

“Come on, there’s no need for more words. You’re standing on Stella’s face”

Maki gave a sniffled snort, breaking the hug but keeping his hands on Tatsumi’s arms as he took a step back to look down

“Shit”

Snorting lightly, Tatsumi’s smile was full of fondness

“Yep. She’ll hit you if she finds your boot prints on her face. Go sign yourself. Like I said, it might be worth big bucks by the end of it. Hell, you might even get scholarship offers flooding through once everyone sees how good you are”

“I’ll believe it when I see it”

“Stop looking down on yourself. It doesn’t suit you. Where’s my foul attitude and fuck the rules alpha gotten to?”

“He was given a lifeline by a man he used to dislike”

With how Maki was looking at him, Tatsumi put space between them. Fiddling with his hair, he faked a pout and looked away

“You didn’t like me? I’m wounded, Maki”

“Yeah, well, past me was a bit of dick. I like you. I won’t let you down and I’m going to work hard to win. All those hours, you’re going to see just what I can do because you’ve been by my side”

That strange beat came back as Maki told him he liked him. He knew Maki meant as a friend, yet… He liked being by Maki’s side. He liked Maki’s enthusiasm and hard work. He liked it the alpha would get snappy from tiredness, or tell him off for being too demanding.

Tatsumi forced down ignored the intimacy of Maki’s words, drawing a shaky line between them

“I’ll be there until the end. Now, get off of Stella. I’m going to hang the three banners once you’ve signed yours. The other two knew it was coming, yet it’ll be a nice surprise to see them when they get here”

Maki softly said his name, emotions were too close to something else with the way Maki looked to him

“Tatsumi…”

He needed to put space between them. Tatsumi moving around Maki to the top of Stella’s banner
