Flashback Friday: Originally posted April 8, 2020
It's scary that this kit exists. It compares autism to cancer, tells parents to not accept their child's autism, tells them to mourn their VERY LIVING child because they're not neurotypical, and on and on. It's so disturbing.

Hi everyone,
So, as you may or may not know, The Good Doctor is airing its last season.
I’ve heard mixed reviews about this show, so I was skeptical about watching it. However, my skepticism turned into anger as I came across THIS.
youtube
Freddie Hiemore isn’t even autistic himself. Another bad representation for us autistic people. And the fact that this was supported by and hate group makes it even worse. I found another article explaining the ableism and inaccuracy of said group.
Anyway, I’m happy the show is ending. Young Sheldon too. I don’t like it when the media makes autistic people so smart like savants, or to an offense way of portraying those with level 2-3 autistic people.
The media really needs autistic actors to play autistic people. They know what it’s like to be autistic and the struggles they can go through.
That’s all I had to say. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

(TW FOR MENTIONS OF AUTISM SPEAKS)
I want to talk about Julia from Sesame Street, and how I feel about her.
Julia is a very comforting character for me, she makes me feel like I am represented, which I really appreciate. Julia has a comfort object like me. She stims like me. She uses AAC like me. She wears ear defenders like me. She is like me in a lot of ways.
I love Julia. I love her so much that I have a plushie of her, and I love it so so much!
As far as I am aware, Julia was made with ASAN, which is amazing!! Unfortunately, at some point Sesame Street dropped ASAN and switched to partnering with Autism Speaks, which is horrible. This makes me feel really upset, because an amazing character like Julia has been partially ruined for me by a hate group. I think that Julia is amazing representation, but that her having ties to AS really upsets me.

Autism Acceptance Month is coming up soon. So here's your annual reminder that the puzzle piece is a hate symbol, and Autism Speaks is an ableist hate group.

how do you know about the kinetic sand people and autism speaks? Is there a source?
Hi anon,
Here’s one article
Here’s another
While this was 9 years ago, I haven’t seen them acknowledge the harm from Autism Speaks, so I can only assume they still support them.

As an allistic person trying to do research for their characters, the way autism speaks and other shitty organizations make actually researching autism and portraying it correctly near impossible sometimes is frustrating beyond fucking words. I'm trying to research non verbal autism (specifically how one with it would describe it) and all I'm getting is blatant hate speech aimed at gullible parents. I had to DIG through several websites just to find a description that wasn't "this person cannot speak! oh woe is me!" and what I got wasn't much better either.
And this is all just me trying to find a way to coherently explain why an autistic character of mine can't speak from their perspective. This is fucking terrifying.
(Also, any advice on how to get around this or actual resources I could use are highly appreciated. Writing this character in question has been incredibly hard due to the amount of searching I've had to do for actual references, and I don't want them to be an inaccurate or offensive character.)

My neurodivergent friends, what do you think about this?
I really don’t like the puzzle piece. It makes autistic people look like they are “puzzling” or that something is “missing” from us. It’s also the logo of the hate group Autism Speaks.
I understand that it has different meanings. But…I just don’t like it. At all.
That’s just my opinion, but I want to hear from you guys. What do you think of the puzzle piece? Do you think it represents autism as it should? Let me know.

(Trigger warning!!: Autism Speaks, murder, abuse, trauma, April, Light It Up Blue, panic attacks, meltdowns)
Hi. I am a nonspeaking autistic.
In a month, it will be April (autism acceptance month!). And I am, quite honestly, terrified.
Let's talk about why.
April is autism acceptance month, however it is also considered by most to be autism awareness month. During "autism awareness month", a ton, like a ton of propaganda is spread by Autism Speaks, lots of people donate to Autism Speaks, and I see a lot of people wearing Autism Speaks shirts.
Let me make this as clear as I can, Autism Speaks is a money hungry hate group that supports eugenics and abuse.
And, well, when for an entire month everyone is encouraging everyone to go donate to them, they get more money, and more attention, which means the more of their goals they will complete.
This is terrifying.
For me, April is genuinely traumatizing. I have an intense amount of panic attacks in April. Half of the time they are in public, too. I went into a store once, to see their walls were taped with puzzle pieces and every few minutes an announcement would come on encouraging shoppers to donate to Autism Speaks.
Within around 15 minutes of me being in the store, I began getting so upset and overwhelmed by this, I collapsed, and cried, and hit myself in the head repeatedly.
This probably seems like an overreaction. But, you have to understand, that is is so so hard seeing people advocate for the murder, and abuse of people like you. It is constantly being forced down your throat all year long, but in this month, it exaggerates. It gets much more intense.
It has gotten to the point, that I am so on edge in April, that I feel physically nauseated, and terrified, whenever I see puzzles, or even just the color blue in April.
Please, please, I ask everyone wear red as much as possible in April. And if you can, donate to ASAN.
