Aang getting so, uncharacteristically angry when Appa was taken by the sandbenders wasn’t just because of his love for his sky bison. Of course, that was a big part of it. Appa is more than just a pet to him, he’s his best friend and soulmate, someone who’s been around since Aang was very young and is meant to be a “companion for life”.
But, Aang ran away on a random Tuesday, got caught in a storm and it changed the whole trajectory of his life. He ran away because he was upset his life was changing so rapidly, he suddenly had all this responsibility at 12 years old that he wasn’t ready for but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have gone back. We don’t know what would have happened; he could have needed a few days to cool off, he could have seen the start of the war and stepped up (from what we know of Aang, there’s no way he would have ignored it for his own needs), but that didn’t happen.
He got caught in the ice for 100 years and when he woke up he discovered that not only was everyone he knew and loved were dead, but brutally murdered in an act of power. That everyone from his teachers, friends (children, like him) and animals, were gone. Not only that but his whole culture; traditions, foods, clothing, music… everything important was eradicated and possibly most of the documentation of the culture, too. He’s suddenly handed this new responsibility on top of being the Avatar, trying to uphold this culture (as literally the last airbender alive) and grieve at the same time.
And Aang grieves very privately, in fact, does he even give himself a chance? He discovered the horrible truth and his immediate response it so go have some fun, maybe because he knows if he thinks too hard about it and gives into the pain, he’ll turn into something he’s not, he’ll forget what the monks taught him and he can’t let that happen.
So he tries to channel all his grief and anger into being the Avatar, even if he still has his reservations, and by his side is Appa. The only thing keeping him tethered to his life 100 years ago and his culture. He’s been with him through everything, and will continue to be, like I said “companion for life”.
And then he’s gone, he’s taken, and all of a sudden Aang cannot keep the crushing weight of his loss at bay anymore and he… snaps, he loses control. He gives into the avatar state because not only is everything he knew and loved gone, taken from him for nothing more than political gain, but now his soulmate that represented everything he lost is gone, too and he doesn’t know what happened to him. Is he dead? Is he scared? Is he fed? Who knows.
Aang losing Appa with the final straw and his grief, something he was ignoring and refusing to deal with, was brought to the forefront when he lost Appa, making it impossible to ignore and if it wasn’t for us friends trying to ground him and remind him of who he was, who knows what would have happened.

Btxt atla au characters backgrounds
me and @phtalogreenpoison Went on a complete brainrot journey and essentially came up with a full au with backstory and plot and world-building in under a few hours bc we are insane… so this post is gonna go through each character in order of introduction to the story and their backgrounds and general motivations and such.
This requires a little bit of world building context to understand but a full post will be coming from either me or @phtalogreenpoison Eventually going through in depth details of the world and it’s conflicts
So a little context: this au is set like thousands of years before the main atla time line with aang, this is a time before all the nations are even established yet. In this au there are tons of small conflicts and wars as each nation is establishing itself for the first time. There’s conflicts between the nothern and southern water tribe, a ton of power struggle and small conflicts all over the earth kingdom, what will eventually become the fire nation has a lot of class struggle etc, the air nomads are mostly chill with each other and everyone and are trying to establish more peace.
Ok that’s the basics of the world so onto the characters:
Jin - jin is the new avatar, originally an earth bender, after mastering earthbending he is sent to one of the air temples to master air first. His overall mission as the avatar is to bring peace to all the nations
Jimin - an airbender at the temple where Jin goes to learn airbending, they become super close along with Taehyung and they both join Jin on his journey
Taehyung - a non bender that was abandoned and adopted by the air nomads, he grew up with Jimin and they’re closer than brothers (vmin platonic soulmates in every universe) he also joins Jin on his journey
Suga - a low class Fire Nation citizen trying to spark (ha get it) a revolution to overthrow the current strict class system in the fire nation. Jin, Jm, and V meet him while on their journey and eventually joins them with the hopes to make a proper difference
Jungkook- a member of suga’s small resistance effort who suga sees as a little brother, and super talented firebender who also joins the team (also the one who eventually teaches Jin firebending)
Hoseok - a talented earth bender who is part of a traveling circus, the team comes across them on their journey and his desire to see the earth kingdom United leads him to joining
Namjoon - the Northern Water Tribe heir to chiefdom. He is desperately trying to figure out a way to keep the north and south water tribes from devolving into all out war, he joins the team to hopefully bring peace between the two tribes
Okay onto the txt boys!
Soobin - the Southern water tribe heir, he is told that in order to prove himself worthy to take up the title of leader he must complete a mission to infiltrate the northern tribe and kill the heir to the north (namjoon) he is desperate to succeed and make his people proud.
Beomgyu - a non bending earth citizen who meets Soobin on his journey north. They hit it off immediately Beomgyu’s clever (and slightly insane) plans making Soobin think he’d be a good asset to have. He just wants to cause as much chaos and trouble possible as the conflicts in the earth kingdom have cost him everything. Secretly deeply caring but also mildly unhinged
HeuningKai - a young air temple nomad who wants to bring peace in accordance with air nomad teachings. He wonders the earth kingdom settling disputes as peacefully as possible. He happens upon Soobin and beomgyu plotting one night and decides to join them in an attempt to sway Soobin to not assassinate the north heir
Taehyun - a wealthy merchants son who’s goal is to see the wold and become a firebending master, if only he had the opportunity, when Soobin, gyu, and hyuka roll into town he immediately wants to join them as long as he can bring his best friend yeonjun with
Yeonjun - a lower class fire nation citizen who has such firebending talent that he gets essentially a scholarship into a firebending school where he meets Taehyun, but he feels trapped by the expectations of his family who want him to use his talents to move them up in the class system, even though he just wants to dance. Taehyun convinces him to join Soobin’s Team to travel and see the world.

zuko: so he was like, "i'm powerless, you've got your swords, why don't you just do it now?" and i was like, "because i know my own destiny. taking you down is the avatar's destiny."
sokka: so... you had the opportunity to kill him. and you didn't do it.
zuko: well, yeah. and then, when i redirected his lightning, i made sure that it didn't hit him directly. it just wouldn't be narratively satisfying that way.
sokka: i'm sorry what the Fuck did you just say

hey white people please don't tag posts about racism in fandom as "discourse". it's not something up for debate when you're told by a poc that something fans do is racist. it's not "fandom drama" when poc try to tell you that something is harmful and ignorant.

im reluctant to label zaheer/the red lotus as anarchist because their views on freedom were deeply flawed but zaheer’s relationship with his airbending compared to someone like aang or just the air nomads in general is super fascinating. it makes you think just how deeply individualistic our understanding of freedom & power is which in turn is why lok portrayed a society outside of oppressive governmental systems as “chaos” and not just like...... a better world that’s achievable.

i dont usually rant on this kind of stuff but bryke leaving the atla remake further proves that netflix ruins everything.......... like how do you watch atla but not realize the whole point is that aang is literally just a kid figuring out how to stop a war made by adults

i remember one time i saw the take that aang is "more queer than zuko" and.... idk what "more queer" means but if you mean more gender non-conforming then well, maybe? but the thing that's so important about aang's gender non-conformity is how casual it is. yes, sokka and toph occasionally make fun of him for it, but that's clearly more of a reflection of their own insecurities about being perceived as feminine than anything to do with aang. for the most part, aang is just gender non-conforming and it's just not a big deal. and in a media landscape in which the majority of our superheroes in popular media are Big Strong Men (and any femininity they have is the butt of a joke), seeing aang as the protagonist, the most powerful person in the world, be a twelve-year-old vegetarian monk who makes jewelry and is completely at ease with the more "feminine" aspects of himself, is so important! and it's precisely for that reason why i think a queer reading of aang is just. so much less compelling than a queer reading of zuko, who does struggle with his father's and his society's expectations of masculinity. zuko isn't completely at ease with his femininity. so, aang might be queer, but i don't really care, because i don't think aang really cares. but with zuko, well... it's implicit in the show (and explicit in the korra comics) that the fire nation is homophobic so like. yeah. zuko would care.
